Yes its Rtv sealant, smells like vinger.

Lucky you Ad, mine xe ones didn't even after doing one in the car while it was snowing around me with the old sh*te 2 cork gaskets.

No mate, the cement stuff isn't rtv. It doesn't smell of vinegar (lol) it's the stuff used to glue sumps on, when there is no gasket. ie steel pan to alloy block etc.

The rad is thicker than the normal Gsi one but only by a few mm (say 5ish)
I run two 7inch fans, because i want them on the front for the cleaner look.
You could run i'd think a 8 or 9inch fan on the back, plus one on the front if you where worried. Depending on where the ic fits and all that.

As i've said, i'm still two minds on the bra, the flat work as wind brakes to hold it down and tight to the bonnet.

It looks a tad thicker. I asked as those two fans look a decent size. I could go for 1 large fan but need to check out how much room I'd have left. The IC will probably be mounted slightly higher than normal due the the front being a snowplough so that will have some bearing on what size fan, inside or out and how large.

Oh that stuff, Fiat use it. If it comes it yeah i'll have a tube.

I'd rather have a bit bigger fans, but they work very well and keep the car happy. Cut the cross member and you can mount it as low as you want. Wish i had gone a bit lower, but its right in the mouth so gets good air flow.

Ah so not just mine.. Will yours leave a small puddle when parked tho?
not really, an odd drop from time to time, but ive never noticed an affect on the oil level, it leaks feck all really. and mine spends most of its time running in the shed and no puddlelol

on another note, any other nova id be iffy on the bra, but on this i thinks it looks good:thumb:

That's very much what i'm thinking, Scott said a few pages back about running some along the join on the out side.

It dont look pretty, but it's worked, i had small leaks all about the sump even after i replaced mine and put the short bolts in, and then i got small leaks from the cooler pipes and a bit at the back of the filter too, so i just got pissed off and smeared the sealant ALL over and joint! lol

Yeah see mines been in the garage since Sunday, and there's a puddle about 2inch wide under it. But the oil level don't go down ....

Just done it. Cleaned it with brake cleaner then smeared it on over the joins all round and used my finger to even it out. Looks poo, but leaking looks worse.

Mine would drop a penny sized amount over a weekend, nothing for me to care or worry about. I could probably make it worse changing the gasket!

As said about 7 times, they are twin 7inch.

As the Rolling road is next weekend, the front needed to be raised up a little just incase..
Started off with 40mm of thread left showing..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8821.jpg

Wound it up a bit *vom* 50mm..

After the RR i can wind it right down, haven't tested how low it will fully go.

Also i got all my interior bits back in too..

Aye looks like theyre rattle canned, might try that or cutting a section from an old GSi seat cloth and sticking it in place of the blue/grey i reckon.

Interior looking good Benn, needs another seat switch on the drivers side though lol

Benn
07-03-10, 08:18 PM
Cheers Novalovingned.

Scott, they are blue sr visors, you can only see the blue with the flash on. If you look at them, you cant only see the patten not the colour.

Spud, the center bit isn't in all the way. As i wasn't sure which way the window switches pluged in.. Took a guess and got it wrong. Have both buttons don't worry.

Really don't like the way it drives with the front raised up. Its really light and doesn't feel connected to the road right. Spun it up big time in 2nd and 3rd while playing with a new turbo Vw Scirocco.. Which was surprisingly fast.

It is possible to alter grip levels with ride heights, as you say raising it tips the grip the other way, I'm not sure of the exact mechanics or whether it's purely because you're effectively tipping the CoG a few mm/cm back!

Benn

Benn... how is your roof lining secured in place? Have you just retrimmed the lining in the same way it left the factory (held up by metal support bars) or have you directly stuck it to the roof skin and contoured it around the beams?

It look very tidy. The roof lining I did many years back has faded at the rear due to the Nova not having any tints in the glass. So I'm considering what to do and yours looks great.

Benn
07-03-10, 09:26 PM
Its a copy of the std one, so the bars hold it up. Then i've used spray glue on the edges where it holds around under the door rubber.

Mine has a sunroof so it couldn't be stuck to the roof.

Nova_Tek
07-03-10, 09:45 PM
Right gotcha. I was actually thinking about sticking mine to the skin and moulding it around the roof beams. Help to lose a bit of weight and probably be easier to clean. Mine has a sunroof too. I'd have thought some carefull trimming would sort that out.

Benn
07-03-10, 09:55 PM
If you didnt have a sunroof then yes you could just stick it straight to the roof.
Weight saving? It weights about 2pounds... The sunroof cassette is about 15kgs...

The sunroof cassette is foam covered, so glueing on that would be a ****. then you'd have to builds the sides up to meet the center too..

Nova_Tek
07-03-10, 10:12 PM
Sorry man, forgot to add that my sunroof is different though not a factory GM one :tard: . Mine was an aftermarket Solarsport sunroof jobbie. When you take the lining off you can see the full roof skin as you would with a non-sunroof car. But obviously there's a whole filled up by a sunroof.

Benn
08-03-10, 08:13 AM
Ah then yeah you could stick it straight to the roof, and shape it by hand over the lumps and bits.

Best thing you can do is just clean both surfaces, and use a new 8v gasket.

If it still leaks, then join the rest of us LET owners, it's hard to come across a LET owner who doesnt have some form of Leak!
Over the past years, I've been doing quite a few motorbike engine overhauls. Same problem with leaky sumps (yes even on Jap bikes). Most people try to overcome this using lots of cheapo silicone sealant or comparable stuff and doing up the sump bolts to the point where they nearly break. Doesn't always work.

Best cure against drippage is to (indeed) thoroughly clean all mating surfaces, use proper gaskets (not sure which ones are best for XE sumps) and tighten all sump bolts to the specified torque. And yes, a thin film of Würth Silikon Speciale 250 (German stuff) works a treat,

Hope this helps,
Niek

I made sure all the surfaces where ultra clean. And used all gen VX parts this time to see if it helped.

A big thank you to Dan for his help mocking everything up and a trail fitting on his GTE.

Now an even bigger thanks to Pete. Who spent this afternoon doing some machining for me.

So i turned up at Pete's house/Garage with all this..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8824.jpg

Pete started off getting the hubs stripped down.. Ooo look at this size of his spanner.. lol

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8839.jpg

Bearing removal thingie.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8825.jpg

Needed a bit more grip.. Carefully does it!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8827.jpg

Now on to the fun bit.. Lathing.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8830.jpg

The outer of the hub needed about 2mm shaving off and about 4mm from the center (to make it all the size side, no step)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8835.jpg

Got my new disk to test fit.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8828.jpg

Looks like the kittie. As the disk is for Vag car it's got a few holes, lucky it lines up with the 5stud hub :)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8840.jpg

Bit its a nice fit on the front :)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8845.jpg

Shame you cant see the name tho.. New wheels would sort that tho... ;) lol

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8846.jpg

With that sorted, i know what i need to buy to finish(a small spacer and 10mm longer bolts)
Pete pressed the other hub and bearing out.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8848.jpg

Inner of the hub thats turned down to fit the Nova bearing.. All perfect after 5k of abuse.

well done Benn, you always seem to find the answers !!!!!!!!!!!!

what brake disc did you end up using and what size?

was they correct centre bore?

Benn
14-03-10, 08:13 PM
Its a Vag fitment disk. The center bore was 5mm out. The hubs have a thicker bit on the inner part. It had to be turned down.

Disk is a 280mm like the ones that come in the kit.

Small up date.
Big big thanks to my dad and Dan.

My Dad got me the longer bolts i needed for the brakes, they came today. So had a bit of a dash on to get everything on and working so i can go on the rollers tomoz..
Gonna get some better spacers made up as at the mo i have two thick washers in there. But got everything up and sorted.

Then Dan popped over and gave me a hand bleeding the brakes up.. Not that easy getting to the bleed nipples on these Wilwood calipar's tho. After a bit of messing about got that sorted and took it for a test drive.

They work much much better than the 284mm. I need to remove the travel out of the pedal a bit tho...

All Nova master cylinders are the same so you would need one off a bigger Vauxhall that ran bigger brakes to start with.

The Nova one isn't big enough bore so takes more pressure to move enough fluid, hence the long pedal.

Benn
20-03-10, 05:59 PM
Cav one wont just bolt on, the pins are offset on ever other mc i've seen.. Bar a Nova.

Benn

carlton/omega dual chamber servo with a astra mk2 gte master cilinder.

to be exact, a servo from an omega A 3000, with the early astra mk2 gte (no abs) cilinder.
but that had a bit to much power on the rear on a brake test computer.

other setup is the full Lucas setup from an omega B. but that has abs, so you need to place an extra splitter for the front and an adjuster and splitter for the rears.

Dropped the front back down on sat, but now the rears abit high so will change that in the week.

Also adjusted my boost up quite alot on sat. As i noticed after the RR day that its wasn't holding boost that high. Thanks to Dan for the fun we had hooning then stopping and adjusting it then more hooning then stop and adjust again. Hold holding under over 10psi and over boosting to about 12 ish.

And yeah i have 2sets of turbo rims. Well almost 3 (i have 9-10 of them..lol)

looking good Benn! whats happened to the wipers? the blades look to long and wonky? lol

Thank you Sir. The linkage is still a work in progress even tho it works.. It needs tweaking here and there, the drives side one hits the rubber and when you get above 110mph it lifts totally off the screen...lol Which isn't helpful.
The angle that the spindles come thru the scuttle needs a tweak and i think it will sort it. Got anther here i can work with.
They are 19" which is perfect tho.

Did a few bits over a nice long relaxing weekend..

This is where the rear was sitting.. Wound it up ages ago..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8876.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8877.jpg

Bit of a twist and its now..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8884.jpg

I might ordered some shorter springs, not really to lower it more. But to raise the platforms to give the shock pistons more room to move..

Rolled it out side..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8886.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8885.jpg

Sitting abit lower now its moved and settled, the rim lip is now inline with the arch lip.. Which is about right..

When i mounted my battery in the boot it was strapped down, but one wasn't enough as it could slowly sliding to the left so.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8881.jpg

Dont move now, now the straps are screwed down, but the screw heads where rubbing on the bottom of the battery, which isn't good. So i made a little seat.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8882.jpg

Wiped my back box off too, still comes up good

Good work as always dude.

One thing tho, shorter springs won't give you more travel tho. All it does is move the platform up (assuming you want the same ride height. Think of it this way - if you've lowered your car so its on the bump stops for example, and the adjuster is at the bottom of the thread. fitting a shorter spring won't mean it will go any lower.

To create more piston travel at that ride height you will need to raise the top mounting point (or lower the bottom).

Benn - Just a thought but the vents might not be as effective if they are flush fitted. One reason for this could be that when in motion the pressure on the bonnet is relatively high. If the pressure is higher than the pressure on the underside of the bonnet (likely) then the air wont flow out of the bonnet regardless of it being less dense. From what i've seen most automotive vents have a protective shield on the windward side and let the air exhaust towards the back which will be a much lower pressure. So if heat is a primary concern then it would be something to consider. I have been looking into fitting something over the winter after feeling the temp of the bonnet after a good thrash. Im looking at the Pulsar GTiR vents in carbon at the moment.

Tbh the vent would be for looks more.. As they'll match the wing vents. But being face down (pressed in) they do let air in, so they should* let cooler air in to the bay.. But my inlet temps arnt too bad (from the Rolling road day) so i'm not to worried at the mo.

Oh a a old mod fact finding. The Ally rad keeps water temp down well, on the motor way the temp doesn't go above the 1/4 line.. and heats up in traffic slower than the copper rad.

Right Benn been looking at my standard top mounts and it would be easy. The studs will knock out of them easily then either tack new longer bolts in with thread pointing up or tack a nut on the underside and then put the bolts through from above. Simples.

Here's my thoughts........ Benn has louvred wings so to louvre the bonnet too could possibly look like overkill with a fully louvred front end! And its the very reason I didnt have the wings louvred on the red one. when it comes to novas we all know subtlety is crucial. Benn if you have a spare bonnet kicking round Id have it done then you can always swap back and or sell making your money back in the process. Once you get up to the stage your at fella it does become hard to find new ideas and keep bettering the car but sometimes they are just best left alone. Andy bishop/Karl rowntree cars havent changed for years really but still look two of the very best out there if you see my point etc! ;)

Nick.

So being not one to shy away with my car, i'm happy to show the bad bits with the good.

So i spotted this,
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof12.jpg

Thinking it was dirt or something in the blue base coat i never thought much about it, till i thought its getting bigger.. Then i started to keep an eye on it. Its not got any bigger, but a smaller 2nd one popped up. Time to check it out..
Gave it a gently tap with my key and found it pushed thru.. Bugger!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof10.jpg

Still its only about 1mm x 1mm so now bad, now its right next to the sunroof, so i know what's happened trapped water and all tho. Talk to the bodyshop and doing, Keith said best to hit it and do it right, dont wanna cover it up ad it come back.
So remove the head lining *eek!!* Drop the sunroof cassette *bigger eek!* clean and sael in the the under said and repair the top.

So i thought to this afternoon lets just crack on as i was missing Combe.

Dived in..

Worse one.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof18.jpg

Not as bad.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof14.jpg

Next was stripping the insides.. Not a fun job. But did it slowly and took alot!! of care.
Got this out with out to much hard work

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof15.jpg

Leaving me with this.. (yes before some one says it the reds still red, didn't see the point of painting that as its never seen)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof4.jpg

Then found the rust is under the bracing that the sunroof bolts on too...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof7.jpg

Looks worse than it is, dragged a screw driver over it and its mostly flaking paint. Got a wire brust in there and gave it a good clean, then slapppped rusting killing gel all over it. I'm guessing its all from where the sunroof is fitted..

Benn
24-04-10, 06:11 PM
While it was doing it's work i pulled all the leather out as i dont want it getting damaged or marked.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof.jpg

Then moved back to the roof its self. Had a ripple in it for ages, perfect time to sort it out..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof17.jpg

You can see it it the reflection of the boot..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof3.jpg

Noticed a small one the other side.. Same thing in the reflection..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof8.jpg

Masked up the hole.. Them charity bags do come in handy!

Nice satin roof too..lol

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Roof9.jpg

I have seen it before, but not on a Vauxhall. As the way the water drains are made it keeps it away from the metal.

Right remember my new strut brace? The plate on the brace are nice and thick. This gave me this problem..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8893.jpg

So after talking to my dad, we worked out counter boring it might lose some strength.. So we have a talk and a think and came up with this..

So using a M12 bolt and these.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_9744sometoolsused.jpg

We came up with..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_9733finalboltheaddrilled.jpg

My dad (he's making them) had a few issues doing them. Cue a few tests..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_9735alltriesexcepthalfcutSS.jpg

So can you see where we're going? A M12 bolt, with a M8 hole drilled and taped up the inside, so this will go thru the brace and screw on to the top mount thread. So it will hold the brace down nicely.
These are test ones as he cant get the hole to be center, so he's gonna get a man at his work to drill them on a lathe.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_9741finaltryhead.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_9738Finaltry.jpg

And he's done his own write up..lol

Stainless steel hex head bolt was so hard, the angle grinder was taking a long time to cut it, so abandoned as too hard.

Ordinary steel Allen cap head bolt was grade 12.9, so would be hard and where allen key socket is would take away from the M8 thread length, so not tried.

Ordinary steel hex headbolt #1 - miss-judged and cut too short with angle grinder. But tried drilling, centre carefully marked, but drill wouldn't stay centred even with centre punching and predrilling with a small drill.

Ordinary steel hex headbolt #2 - Drill still wouldn't stay centred.

Ordinary steel hex headbolt #3 - tried marking centre and drilling from head, still wouldn't stay centred.

Ordinary steel hex head #3 - centre carefully marked, centre punched, 2mm then 4mm then 6.8mm hole drilled ready for tapping, hole started centred but hole ended up not concentric by the time it got to the end. Evidently due to platform on pillar drill not being square to chuck. Had to find straight bit of rod to put in chuck, to use set square against, to get platform horizontal. But why is every bit of rod in a shed bent? Bit of near-straight rod found, platform set up as square as could be judged, hole drilled. Nearly concentric - must be how bolt head is held in vice that's putting it out of position. Tapped M8 thread, proved it can be done.

Next - use lathe at work to hold bolt whilst drilling 6.8mm hole in from head end, to get concentric.

Lessons learned - when cutting a bolt with an angle grinder, it stays VERY hot for a long while.

Lol great write up from ur old man. Good work on the roof nova roofs allways seem to dent just behind the b pillars, I've heard they can come from handbrake turns n hard cornering etc as it's the shell flexing.

So you'll drill the hole bigger in the strut brace and then bolt it down with the drilled n tapped bolt? nice idea there benn.

Good idea Benn - but I do think your over-engineering a simple fix

Simply take your strut top mounts off - and replace the upward facing bolts with longer ones - I can't remember if they are just tack welded in or a simple splined bolt (a bit like some wheel stud) that would knock out

Dave

I did wonder about the roof ripples, sure Nick fixed them on his.. And i know they weren't there when it was first painted.

The the brace will have bigger hole for the collar of the bolt to sit thru, the flat on the top then sits on the base of the brace and pulls it down tight.

I am yes, but at the mo it saves taking the car to bit (or any more) grinding off the old ones and getting longer ones in and to be in tighter. Plus i killed my welded so i could tack them in.

Rick did say it, it is my other plan if these dont work. Altho i haven't spend any time doing them ass dads done it all.

Non sunroof models seem to be worse for this as there's more flex in the roof skin. One thing I have thought is if this is true, and they tend to dent in the same place quite often, it may not be such a good idea to fill the dent as it may flex again in the same place and crack the filler. Quite unlikely really but just a thought. X

Your right mine had three shallows down both sides of the roof...... My dent guy told me what tends to happen is that when roofskins gets really hot from sun etc they become more flexible and the strengtheners or sunroof framework can pull down on the skin because of the weight causing small ripples. The bmw minis are the same as they have big cardboard sound deadening pads under the roofskin which pulls the skin inwards causing the same. Simply removing these pops the roof back into position in some cases on the minis. pretty amazing to see. Mine were a little harder to fix but came out 100% with no filler used. A trusted dentguy would be the way Id prefer. Im sure your old boss should know of someone fella. Or If you fancy bringing up here I could have a word for you no worries.

Have spent a few nights getting the roof in to a better shape. Popped to the bodyshop so Keith could look at the holes. Worked out if we enlarged the holes a tiny amount they could be plug welded to repair them.

When back in this evening and Paul did the welding. Big thanks to him for that.
