How you getting on now petal?

Collecting bits really. Picked up a F28 with Quafe diff, gonna order a billet flywheel and clutch (just gonna go for it and get the non paddle helixs up rated one as the flywheel mate said.. Gonna get the mount all finished off and then welded on for the F28 this weekend..

Seconded. And where's my little locking tool dude????

I'll order you one tomoz...

Thirded. Was the photoshop okay then?

Shop was great.

The feature pics look awesome btw Benn :thumb:

Cheers dude :)

Benn, do all motorfactors do them flywheel locks?

I have a stubborn bottom gulley Bolt on a mates engine down my garage.

Where can we get them?

As Ad says below, they will be able to order you some. With the two on i undid the bottom pulley bolt with semi ease.

Not many motor factors sell them locking tools. Most will probably be able order them from draper though.

The fly looks fine, yes its got hot as fook (everytime its used) lol
Benn, are there any cracks in the surface? Excess heat from slippage will cause cracking. If no cracks then its fine really.

No cracks no, they are just wear patches.. That's good then, means i can sell it..lol And there wasn't any probs.

Proper up date in a bit...

So, now the secret is out i can update.

Tv Shoot work..

Both front wings needed paint as one got dented, so that was repaired and both where made ready for paint, as was my brand new boot.. Which they where away...

Insides where looking like this...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9262.jpg

Dirty dirty. Cant have that.. These where badly scratched too..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9263.jpg

So everything out and apart..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9264.jpg

Frames off sanded and painted in satin black..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9266.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9267.jpg

These looked faded and sh*te too...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9268.jpg

Now as there was no other red on the insides of the car i did this..lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9269.jpg

While they where trying..

Dirty.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9270.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9271.jpg

10 mins with a tooth brush and some cleaner..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9272.jpg

Then painted the arms of the pedals too.. Cant find the pic tho.. Satin black. and tidied up the under carpet stuff too..

Benn

Fitted my new seat runners, found a replacement for the small push in plastic dowels then jusat a dip of black on the top.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9265.jpg

Got the seats back in, cleaned all the leather, fitted the nice valour mats in.
Re hoovered and everything cleaned.

Moved in to the boot, needed to tidy up the wiring for the speakers..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9279.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9282.jpg

Tucked it nicely along the edge/lip of the 2levels of wood.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9281.jpg

Then needed to clean and paint these, as they've taken a bit of a beating from carrying, 2 gear boxes, a engine block, camping stuff, wheels and stuff..

So before...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9276.jpg

Got all the boot hoovered and clean and everything re fitted. No pics tho..

On to the engine bay, Wanted my coil hidden more.. To do that i had to "trim" the brackut.. Or cut both corners and ends off..lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9330.jpg

Washed, clayed, glazed, waxed and gels the engine bay. Move the turbo water out let a bit more to hide the pipe more (see back a page to see the damage to the rad oops)

Ah my small list...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9296.jpg

Wings and boot all painted.. Picked then up and started to re build the car...

Wanted the gaps perfect for the shoot and my own ocd..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9329.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9328.jpg

Then got them flat and polished..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9287.jpg

Looks nice and flat and reflective..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9288.jpg

Then got the boot all fitted, with new glass and what was ment to be a new rubber, which was not and was sh*te.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9290.jpg

This was 9pm the night be for the shoot...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9297.jpg

Got the car Snow foamed, washed, clayed, dried. Then back in the garage.

11ish that night, i Glazed and waxed the car very quickly.

5am the day of the shoot, get the car out, a very quick coat of wax. Load the car with a boot full of cleaning stuff.

Benn
16-12-10, 07:57 PM
Got to the shoot with no probs, drove past the TV headoffice which was kinda cool.

Just under a 100 miles, got there and start to clean then car, then they wanted me in right away.. So i kept seeing bits i needed to do, some they wouldn't let me. So i had to grin and bare it..

At and from the shoot..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9298.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/IMG_9311.jpg

Funking awesome day. Have a read of the mag...

From there i broken the rad and ordered a new one. Took the car off the road rady to do the gear box swap.. See updates above for that..

With the car in bits i took a few bits to be chromed.. ;)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Chrome32.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Chrome34.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Chrome36.jpg

So that's both shafts and the equal length bit, just ordered a new bearing for that too from Vauxhall.

And both tca/tie bars and washers have been chromed too.

More at the weekend...

Kinda, i just line it up by eyes normally, got used to doing it at the body shop, but i wanted it 100% perfect this time.. lol

For me its the little details that make a car.. It's what i see all the time.. So i like to do the same on mine, taking every thing on board then fixing it.. lol

Like the heater/air dials in the shoot pics.. Have a lookie ;)

lol

multispoke wheels like that are done a lot overhere.
loads of saxo's, corsa's etc on OZ turismo's or OZ superleggera.

the turbo wheels look great, they just suit youre car very well.
how about 16 inch TH lines?

**edit**

if you like RT's but dont want the common look, find some zender turbo's or RT phase 1 (the ones without the writing), or even better (now it's getting expensive and rare lol) some ronal racings (3piece ronal turbo's )

Cheers dude, see this is everything i'm thinking about all ready.. I want a simple yet really nice euro feeling rim. I love the turbo rims but just think there could be something better.. But maybe not.

I do love TH lines, but again they are'nt that rare, there's quite a few cars that run them, but i might look in to them.. What do Zender turbo's look like?

Not really a fan of slip rims, as i line the bolts around the outsides look a lil messy as stupid as that sounds, Love BBs rims, but the bolts do put me off...

You know my opinion regarding the wheels so Ive no need to mention that! Plans do sound good for the future and Im sure with your attention to detail the car will come out better in 2011. Thanks, Nick.

bbs e30 is hard to find.

i want Zender turbo's for my mk1 astra.

biggest problem with the KW turbo's is that most sets are 9j rears. (i might know of a set for sale btw)

i can fill pages with lovely wheels, but the biggest problem is the offset and width.

I know, i like it with the Turbo rims i was going to fit them to mine, i just thoght you were thinking about changing them thats why i said if they do get changed they should have something bendy so theyre still similar to the original look of the car

I know what you mean, imo wheels make a car, so you need the right wheel.
That's why finding a rim is so hard.. I just think there are better and nicer wheels out there..

Yeah i agree, i think the cars got to a point where everything else is perfect and its too good for just a set GM wheels now :(

Whatever wheels go on it though they have to be polished lol

very nice car this, you must spend some amount of time keeping it clean, something i could'nt be hooped doing, as for the wheels, you should have a look at the 5 spoke ones off a porsche, maybe to big though

Thank you very much, the deal was good, they wanted a car to show off as such and know i always look after my car and knew i'd be keeping the car for a few years (now over 7years) So offered me a discount on the work at the start.(colour change and stuff) Don't get so much discount any more and now i do all my own prep work and filling and welding and stuff.. So i kinda save the money on that, so kinda works as the discount.. If that makes sense?

I love the pics, would have liked a better one showing the insides off, so you can see all the custom bits i've had trimmed.. I'm happy with the bay ones.. I think getting better ones would have been hard...
I'd have liked to see more reflection on the sides of the car tho.. As i love the flat ness of the paint and shine the car has, but getting that inside can be hard.

Thank you so much, i've said it a few times, but it does mean alot to hear that and really makes it all worth it.

There will be proper updates soon, i swear.

I don't think i could have it any other way, i like that i do it all my self, means it my car if you get me.. Means i know every bit and what ever bolt looks like, i know i've not (well maybe once or twice) cut corners and such. But does mean i know all the bad bits on the car.. I day i'll have got rid of them all and be happy final.

For me, hearing people say its one of their fav Novas is funny. Over the years there have been so many cars i've look up to and thought i wish my car was like that.. Even now compare to these cars i don't see my Nova as up there with them.. So to hear that people see my car like that is crazy, but a huge honour. No need to thank us for the comments bud it really is a stunning car, ill look at any car and can/will appreciate the work thats gone into it, but when its one man thats gone into his garage and had a crack at it, i appreciate more even if it doesnt quite have a flawless finish.

But the fact that yours does have a flawless finish, and the fact that it is all your own hard work, for me puts it right up at the top:thumb:

Ive said this to Joff many a time as he is the same, he never will be able to see his car through anyone elses eyes but his own, he wont be able to see past the bits he isnt quite happy with, or the bits he wishes he had done differently, you will be the same, you will always see the niggles and flaws (purely because you will always be your worst critic, and the fact you know where all the niggly bits may be) whereas to stand back and see the entire car through someone elses eyes for just a minute and you would be able to see why we all rate your car and your work in the way we do:d

Start..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Gearboxmount4.jpg

Off, area needs cleaning up.. *cough*

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Gearboxmount5.jpg

Mostly clean.. Smooth bays can be a git to work on. My mouth was fully smoothed in hence the dust every where, mount was full welded around too so there's been alot of grinding down to get it flatter.. But i think the F28 mount goes a little father forward so should be ok..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Gearboxmount3.jpg

Next get the box in and start lining everything up. Oh gonna plate and smooth the two holes too...

*cough* Damn filler and metal dust..

There properly **** IMO, as Edd has said they leak water into the footwells for fun from behind the dash, the wiring is dire on them, there a pain to work on mechanically, they weight far to much, even the SRi is waaaaaaaaaaay under powered & the body roll is just comical lol

Look at all that filler dust :p

That's cause some one smoothed the whole chassis leg.. And around the mount.
Even a small skim of filler makes a lot of dust when you hit it with a flapper wheel on a grinder...

First found with this much gap..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/F28fitting2.jpg

It was very close to here...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/F28fitting4.jpg

After so tweeking, pulling, pushing, jacking, measuring i got it to fit better, rear mount looks like it lines have a bit of threaded bar in it at the mo.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/F28fitting3.jpg

But here is where i have the prob. With everything in the right place (going by my measurement) i cant get the rubber mount in between the chassis leg and gear box mount..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/F28fitting6.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/F28fitting7.jpg

Now slotting the holes in the box mount ever say 3mm will give me the room i need.. Shouldn't be a prob should it? I'm not a far of slotting mounts tho..

Have you loosened all the other engine mounts so there's some play in the others?

Benn
28-12-10, 01:42 PM
No, cause if i move it to far the other way the bottom pulley can start to catch...

Rick Draper

Benn, i slotted the holes on the gearbox mount so i could slide it about on the box. That will solve your current issues.

I did wonder if you ment these Rick, I'll slot them up, then weld them up after.

Damen, i have a twin V belt one with the outer ring machined off.

Damo
28-12-10, 03:52 PM
If your running a standard pulley with the outer vee machined off you should have loads of room for manover surely?

Im running the standard twin vee on mine with standard rubber mounts and ive no catching issues!

But as already been said benn if you can slot the mount easy enough then do that mate weld washers ontop too to keep the strength like iain did to his rear mount.

But keep up the good work mate.

Damo.

Rick Draper

I agree with Rick Benn, slot the hole to the gearbox. Once you have it in place you can always tack in some washers then weld round them.

twist the 90deg bend off the cooler so it points up and goes over the mount? thats how ive run mine, should still be able to hide the pipework.

Are you welding that mount on without bolting the rear on first??

Good work benn id bolt the rear mount up tbh before you weld the new mount to the car just to double check that its right as it'd be a pain to get off once welded lol.

I'll look at that, the rear mount as two bits of threaded bar thru the holes where the bolts would go, which are screwed in to the holes in the box.. Would think that's ok...

it looks like the rear mount isn't bolted to the gearrbox in that picture. You want to make sure the rear mount is bolted up properly before u weld the mount on. Why is it on threaded bar at the minute?

I'm using a empty dead casing, so the holes are the rear haven't been drilled and taped. But the holes are m8, so i have threaded bar thru the mount and in to the holes.. To make sure it lines up. In the pics it was before i moved it to line up with the rear mount.

Then James (CountVaux) came over with a very heavy duty welding for some action.

To blow my own trumpet for a bit I'm actually pretty **** hot considering how long I've been doing it, my lecturer asked where I'd been taught when I asked how I could improve the weld I'd just done after a 10 min 'taster session' kinda thing. I can produce 'pretty' welds about half of the time on simple joints, filling gaps etc I'm pretty bad at (sure you'll see later if you check my project thread! lol) but the kind of welding James produces is just something else, I don't even see that kind of neatness with professional tig welds, any 'pretty weld' I've ever seen has characteristic ripples to it.

great work Benn.

and to the welds, we do professional welds at work, and some are not as good as that lol.

a tip one of the welders taught me was to push the torch and not pull. as it holds the weld pool better and the heat etc.

after all the pull welding i have done. pushing it feels so weird and near impossible lol.

There's actually examples of both done by a pro welder on mig-welding.co.uk and the only way to tell the difference is from the dip in the end of the weld.

Dan and my self picked up the engine hoist today to use when i'm ready to remove the engine.. Then thought well we might as well crack on till we get cold...

Had to put the tie bars back on and bits and wheels to get the car out of the garage.. Mmm they look pretty..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval14.jpg

With the engine being held up by me with a breaker back on the cross member to the block, till the car was out and then could sit it back on the jack..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval15.jpg

Started getting every thing disconnected..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval1.jpg

Linked the legendary hoist out.. Now years back when i bough my first xe, the guy left a really nice 3braided wiring lifting rid on it, every engine has been removed using it as its like unbreakable. Till today as it was left at Dan's. So this time we had to rid up some lifting straps instead...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval2.jpg

Coming out..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval3.jpg

Me pointing the best way (:p) to remove a engine.... lol (no damage to bay)(yes this time there is no box on it)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval4.jpg

Leaving me with a filthy :( engine bay..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval5.jpg

Off with Mr lighten flywheel.. Flywheel locking tools are the best thing ever! Came off easy as.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval7.jpg

Out came Mr stand..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval9.jpg

Engine needs to be on the stand..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval6.jpg

So lift engine up and connect plate from stand.. While i'm sitting next to said hanging engine...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval10.jpg

Huge bang!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20May%2010%20on/Engineremoval11.jpg

Strap slips thru the lifting eye, missing my by a tiny amount and making me and Dan sh*t our selfs... The corner of the sump did that to the stand...

Bit of a tidy up and then we can push the car back in and pack up very cold and tired.

I never fully liked how empty and non-symmetrical my old bay looked. Thats why I decided turning the engine round was the only way.

I think it would take it to the next level tbh

Would look top with the servo hole smoothed over and painted

Doubt it cost that much as well, £30 tops for a servo plus a bit more

I also love the 'how does it run' look lol

Well that one doesn't :p But it's an awesome look imo and Benns would look more symmetrical due to the turbo intake etc if that's a worry

Stay as you are Benn. Looks nice and balanced imo.

That is my view, will it look odd...

Personally I quite like the "How does it even run?!" look of an engine floating in the middle of a bay lol

I do like that too, but dont want it looking sh*t and odd.

yeh you can

corsa servo and plate.
braided or copper hose
brake fluid
brake unions - i think they are m10

a grinder and a welder lol.

but now simps has said it, it might look unbalanced.

Well yeah but that's all the easy stuff. Not the messing about with the linkage bits under the dash and that.. That's the hard stuff.

Cheers for the pic, see i'm not sure if i really like that. I think if i could hide the air piping and it would look fine.

Cost isn't what worries me, it's it looking wa*k.

What? The intake is something i'd like to remove....

Yer but your a big gay bear who needs to get his but plug out and get on with said turning of the engine, so I'm not sure if your opinion counts. Controversially I think you may have a point.

I've got the corsa servo yeah but the base plate got welded to the car.

If you do it like i did you dont need the base plate - i think this would still be possible with the fire wall in place.

Not as hard as you think mate - here are some pics to give you food for thought.

Take this lot

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/engbay154.jpg

Cut it up and splice it with the corsa b pedal ass

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/engbay192.jpg

Modify the corsa ass further

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/engbay194.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/engbay195.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/engbay197.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/engbay198.jpg

So it fits together like so

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/engbay202.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/engbay206.jpg

Then mod the pedal to suite

I've got the pedal assembly but the pedal itself hasn't been adjusted/straighted but to be honest, if doing it again I would doing it differently, more like James', as mine can be a biatch to get out.

That method is stronger and keeps the original supports so no flex
