Here's mine from Billing. Only taken quickly on iPhone so no majestic arty farty shots I'm afraid.

If you want any emailed, drop me your email address.

Do you not get stone chips on the bottom of your wings and doors without mudflaps?

No, don't think i've ever had one. I wouldn't think stones would flick that way anyway.. Water and mud yes. Plus i hate the look/fit of mudflaps on Novas.

Metallic Grey ;)

Thank you

Few small updates from before billing.

Striped front and rear bumpers off as they were marked and peppered with stone chips. The bodyshop did a great job squeezing me in and getting the primered and re painted in time.

Gave the rear panel a good clean and wax. Looked ok too which is nice.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1051_zpsoaw9br8t.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1051_zpsoaw9br8t.jpg.html)

Bumper sanded back, i took my time and 320'ed them both.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1052_zpsbizmugag.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1052_zpsbizmugag.jpg.html)

But they needed more so where 180'd and primed for a better finish.
All painted.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1079_zps89cnppk6.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1079_zps89cnppk6.jpg.html)

Nice straight outta the gun finish.

Next up an issues i'd had a while.
On my roof i had some water marks/a spray wax/sealant topup marks that would not come out no matter how much i polished.
If you look at the door line to the skye, you can see one of the patches, very hard to photo, but easy to see in the light/by eye.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1073_zps5vovugzr.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1073_zps5vovugzr.jpg.html)

So the only way i could fit it was by sanding them off...
3000 grit finishing paper was used.

Next up was the drive to Billing. I didn't wanna take any stone chip chances so... Out can the detailing low tac tape. Something i've always wanted to do :lmao:

Billing was ace. Weather was just right really.

Johnny A took this amazing photo that i love, as it kinda shows what i aim for in my eyes bay.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/VBOA%20At%20Billing%202015/FB_IMG_1437686609657_zpsqdbue0ek.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/VBOA%20At%20Billing%202015/FB_IMG_1437686609657_zpsqdbue0ek.jpg.html)

All was good till as we left there was heavy rain. Like lashing it down!
This is where things got tricky. The car start to kinda miss, in a odd way. Like a stalling way rather than a miss. I could only put it down to water getting in to my air filter. As there was so much standing water on the road...
Stop for a bit, big thanks to Dan for coming back to see what was up.

When the rain clearing the car was ok again. Queue 100 miles of fine running, boost, lighting it up as i left roundabouts.

25 miles away from my Mrs's house the rain start again... Mega heavy again. Road surface was like a swimming pool. Queue small prob again but worse... Car struggled up the hill. Had to give in and pull over... Rain wasn't stopping. Had to call recovery :grr:

So parked on the smallest bit of "hard shoulder" ever! My mirror was over the white line, in lashing rain, I sat under the motorway bridge.. Watching huge lorries pass with in inches of my car.. Waiting to see it fly up the road smashed in to the front of a artic truck.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/VBOA%20At%20Billing%202015/IMAG1106_zpsxzkdh6rm.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/VBOA%20At%20Billing%202015/IMAG1106_zpsxzkdh6rm.jpg.html)

Almost 3 hours later i was sat in a fully covered over recovery truck that normally has Bentleys and other high end cars in.

Also found out i was maybe 200 yards from a big layby with bus shelter in it... GREAT!

So that is kinda it really... Well to add in. any one that says my car doesn't get dirty..

Congrats on the award Benn, shame about the running issues but I'm sure you'll find a way to sort it.

Love this, always looks so tidy! I take it it's no longer a daily driver?

Turbo rims are definitely the best look for it IMO. Am I correct in thinking you had a polished set?

Cheers Si,

I think a better designed air box and maybe one of the incased air filters with a feed that's out of the way.

Thank you very much. I try and use it as much as i can. I don't drive it to work tho as i have a work van.

I do like the turbo rims, but just find them not showey enough... If that makes sense.
I did have a polished set yes. But was offered a good price for that.

I have to agree Ben the alloys are the only thing that I'm not to keen on, everything else is just perfection though.

Was good to meet up again Benn, albeit a tad brief. Not to worry though, there's always Billing 2016. Well impressed with the bay, also very much liking the pic by Johnny A. Hope you get the shite weather running troubles sorted.

Very true, next time we'll have a longer chat, i find there always seems to be something to do a billing, which is annoying.

Bit of an update.

Since my dampness issues on the way back from Billing, I've remade and designed my "air box" I wanted to box it in more and add in a air feed from a drier location.

How it started. IT was never a finished item by the way.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4731_zpsl7fbgoqw.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4731_zpsl7fbgoqw.jpg.html)

My redesign in MS paint..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/1_zpsdy8bo4to.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/1_zpsdy8bo4to.jpg.html)

Out with the plastic welding gear. I'm using another box i bought for parts.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4732_zpsrvcxrk5y.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4732_zpsrvcxrk5y.jpg.html)

Built the side up as i think that is where most of the water was getting in. Out and wrapping it around the front more too.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4739_zpscmkdt0yd.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4739_zpscmkdt0yd.jpg.html)

Added some triangleaction in for strength.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4740_zps2ruhse7m.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4740_zps2ruhse7m.jpg.html)

Then built the front up to inclose more.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4748_zps2eyhvi0l.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4748_zps2eyhvi0l.jpg.html)

THen i looked at where the afm/filter sat. Wanted to move that around a bit. So box off, pipe work out.
Cut a few lines in to open up and then rewelded.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4735_zpstnouozlb.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4735_zpstnouozlb.jpg.html)

This aloud me to pull it around a bit more so it was pointing down and in more. No after welding pics as it wasnt a tidy job :(

So before...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4733_zpsqri8vfcz.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4733_zpsqri8vfcz.jpg.html)

Then after, bit more flow room there.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4748_zps2eyhvi0l.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4748_zps2eyhvi0l.jpg.html)

Next up i wanted to duct air in, from under the headlight, as it will be dry there ineven in heavy rain.
Bought my self a nice big chassis punch tool to get a nice shape. Hole and repaint.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4747_zpsjzibngf4.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4747_zpsjzibngf4.jpg.html)

Ducting in, not happy with it tho, is untidy.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4745_zps2joymita.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4745_zps2joymita.jpg.html)

Sit nicely under the headlight, but want to tidy it up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4746_zpstu82rrju.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4746_zpstu82rrju.jpg.html)

Ran it in to the box and behind the AFM, fluting up to the filter. You can just see it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4748_zps2eyhvi0l.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4748_zps2eyhvi0l.jpg.html)

Added a bit on the bottom pointing in to the bumper, as there was a gap at the front. Where i could see water getting in easily...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4750_zpsrcnqjzwz.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4750_zpsrcnqjzwz.jpg.html)

Fast fordward to the sat, all ready to drive up to Retro Rides.
Fast forward 35miles, having a bit of a play around with a Astra VXR. I pass him and pull back in, see him flash me.. Then notice the smoke. Look down, oil on! Quickly switch off and dip the clutch.. Cost as long as i can, as i know there is a juc coming up.. Didn't make it. Stopped just before it.. No brakes on the pass side. F**king car.

Get out, to find oil all up the side to the windows.. all the way down the side, all over the whole boot. Pass wheel is covered. Rear wheel face is coated too... Look in my front arch to see....

Stripped the pads out, disc off. Both soaked and cleaned with brake cleaner. Look ok, but not driven it yet.
Wheel arch was fully de-greased and washed off, had to paint de-greaser on from the top windows down. All down the pass side, the whole of the boot was done. Did the main flats of the floor too. Did the front of the rear wheel and tyre.

WAshed it off, snow foamed and then given a light quick-wax.
Dropped the cooler off, am gonna see about getting new lines make with prober ends. But lil worried why it blew off in the first place...

Iain
27-08-15, 04:59 PM
Swaged ends are definitely a good idea having seen that. Mine were done at Protec but weren't that expensive. What oil pressure do you run?

Benn
27-08-15, 05:12 PM
Standard Zlet pump pressure. I haven't tested it was a number gauge, which i want too now. On the Nova gauge it sits just underfull when cold. When warm it sits at 3/4 mark.

I've ordered a psi/bar gauge so i can test it, as i don't want it to blow from some where else if i fix the lines.

Gonna get prob ends on the lines that wont come apart. THe 2 jubliblee clips that where on the fitting where both very very tight. I couldnt push it back on when i remove it.

Just remove the oil cooler its not like your hamering the car on track

Benn
27-08-15, 07:20 PM
That's what i was gonna do, while sorting the lines out. But the Zlet doesn't look like you can.
I wanted to do the Clet/xe way use the 8v pipe and remove the sandwich plate. But there is none of that on a let. The plate seems to be all part of the pump.

Plus i dont know how hot it gets, never run one with the xe, but did with the let just cause of more heat....

Iain
27-08-15, 07:39 PM
Zlet is still a sandwich plate is it not? Could always loop the lines back on themselves by the pump.

Mine runs about 90psi cold and when revving and drops to about 50psi.

Benn
27-08-15, 07:43 PM
Yeah looks just like the C just no screw in pipe bit. And yeah i could, that is another way.
I'll see what the guy at the hose place says and when he can make me some... If not i'll loop them on sat/sunday.

Benn

Very stiff, but got them all tucked away. Done about 300miles since and they've been fine.

Always fancied a set of these, so when i saw some pop up on ebay i had to have them... Spent a bit to much really.

Had a plan to open then up and maybe make another pair.
Then i took the really really badly cut glass out, they are full of fiber glass. Bit disappointed with them really. The adjustment doesn't work at all either.
So think i will make my self another pair and do it right, plastic welded them all up. That way they'll all work correct.

I saw those mirrors on eBay I think Benn. If you look at the diagonal line that goes up to the right it stops about 3/4 from the top. Where as if you look at a standard mirror the diagonal line goes from corner to corner if you know what I mean.
looks as though they have cut a couple of inches from the middle then stuck the end back on. Shame really but I'm sure you'll do a much better job.

Can you not start a dispute about the mirrors and recoup some money back or all your money back and return them

Having fitted them, i think you're right. the ends are more rounded I can't really work out what they've done. as they are shorted than std mirrors but in a odd way.

Wow, looks like i've been slacking. TBh i've just been enjoying and driving the car and using it as a work van. Carrying my welding gear about to weld up a Astra GTE and a Nova.
But then thought its time i took it apart and said "i've got loads of time..." remember those words kids.

First off, i did lots of reading and saved all the photos i could for ref reasons. So i could finally do the Corsa servo and mc swap.
found there's lots of things missing from write ups over it. Mostly cause people did the swap with dashes out.
First, you can't get this out with the dash in... Que up the grinder...

Next the Nova pedal assembly bits wont come out with the steering column in. Now i wanted to remove that anyway due to this...

Damage that was caused years ago due to someone putting mole grips on it when it didn't have a steering wheel on it.
Getting the snapoff bolt thing out was being a nightmare, again due to a fitted dash. Luckly my belt sander fitted in the gap and worked just right grinding the top off. With the column out i got the pedals out and started marking up.
found the backing plate would only just fit, had to trim the edge off too... So mark and.

Get a big hole saw and...

Grip in place, try and tack it in so its stronger enough to remove, but where it is you can see the join.. Que much arching and wire waste and very minimal tacking and much burning of my arm/wrist and swearing.

Got it out, and welded the f**k out of it.

Now i read in to support the clutch arm pivot bar. two threads, two different ways. I went with one..

Which this was done.. To the Corsa set up,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4979_zpsubsgtkdb.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMG_4979_zpsubsgtkdb.jpg.html)

Then you cut this away from the Nova parts..

To the do this,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1648_zpsbhywi4e6.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1648_zpsbhywi4e6.jpg.html)

So it would look like this, but in the Corsa bit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1650_zpstyziqwyw.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG1650_zpstyziqwyw.jpg.html)

See where it's going? You weld the Nova bit in to the Corsa bit to hold the clutch arm in place.

Now this is were it went wrong. Fit the clutch arm back in and i got this...

Why it is so far over?? Would never be able to weld the bit in to that..

Back to my ref photo... Bugger.
On the thread i was going with, James had cut the battery tray out and re-placed with a flat sheet, doing that he had move the Corsa pedal box over.. I didn't see that at the time. F**k.

Go to the other thread and see how he's done this bit. He (cheers IaIn) had used the Nova clutch support arm and welded that to the underside of the scuttle/battery tray. I liked that but wanted it removable with the rest. So i started cutting.
Bracket cut down.

With that dried in the 60deg! Temps in my conservatory.. Burn my hand on one bit!
Everything was refitted to mod the pedal.
This bit is annoying and it's in and out over and over... The pedal is a mix of Corsa top and Nova bottom, Cutting and welding... Got it in where i thought was right. but need to go back and mod it again as it's to high at the mo (i found on the drive to PVS)

Everything back in. Filled up with 5.1 fluid.. Big thanks to Dan who helped me bleed them...
Bleed everything, pedal started feeling good, when Pete notice some fluid. I didn't spilt any! GReat!

Fluid was leaking out from under the servo! Took the Mc off and it felt dry. But much off been leaking through the seal in to the servo. FFS!
Hour later after a message or two and Nemise has a servo and mc and he was taking it off! As my dad happened to be 15 mins away from it. Big thanks to Ben for that.

Few days later and i had bled all the new fluid out and stripped it all again.
Doing the swap. am annoyed i should of painted the servo before fitting... But was running out of time.

Picked up a pressure bleed kit, so i didn't have to bug Dan to help me after work. Got it all bled up and a great feeling pedal.

Due to where the servo is, the pipe would of been a bit of a rubbish angle. So popped to see my good friend in the hydo place with the servo pipe fitting, who found me one of these. Founds some "new" (read old stock from my work) servo pipe i had in stock.

Car started first time. That was good.
So now we're at Sat morning before PVS.

Huge thanks to Dan here.
I'd be struggling to get the steering column to fit right. Finally remove the "new" column i'd fitted, found of a mk1 column is shorter than a mk2!!
So had to refit my column, remember the state of it?
Dan sat and hand filed it! Am still gonna replace it tho.

Leads up up to now. Few things to note.

Pedal is fantastic, braking is 50 times better than the Nova braking.
But the pedal needs lowering. As you really have to lift your foot up off the power to brake, which i'm not happy with, but is semi easy fix.

All change then! That'll give a more direct feel I expect & neaten up the minty bay no end.

~ Increase the gas flow when doing such thicknesses if possible since these must be structural; open spots in weld pools are a tell tale.

Yea pedal and braking are much better and nicer now. Haven't used them in anger yet tho.

Ah i was gonna see if anyone knew why i sometimes get that bubbly weld...

Started making a set of stubby mirrors. Have liked them for ages, started in Feb... Got these far.

Marked it up and started cutting...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1449_zpsncplyt1k.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1449_zpsncplyt1k.jpg.html)

Then my soldering iron died so i treated my self to a much more heavy duty one that says will do plastic welding.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1443_zpsunhi7sua.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1443_zpsunhi7sua.jpg.html)

All welded up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1463_zpsfgdygqjt.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1463_zpsfgdygqjt.jpg.html)

Test fit, you can see how much shorter it is...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1449_zpsncplyt1k.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1449_zpsncplyt1k.jpg.html)

More so here, this is the size of the bit cut out...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMG_4938_zpseyhhlchh.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMG_4938_zpseyhhlchh.jpg.html)

Sanded it off, very light coat of black fiber glass to cover the weld tracks..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1465_zpsaafyes0s.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1465_zpsaafyes0s.jpg.html)

All sanded down, ready for primer.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1472_zpsd5nd7qc7.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1472_zpsd5nd7qc7.jpg.html)

Then set about cutting the casing down.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1452_zpsgtnso3df.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1452_zpsgtnso3df.jpg.html)

Put the casing on, to check it all fitted and lined up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1451_zps40cjdbnj.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1451_zps40cjdbnj.jpg.html)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1456_zpscq0bxniu.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1456_zpscq0bxniu.jpg.html)

Wanted the cover and the main case to still be two parts as i think it's nicer and if there's a prob i put it part.

That was as far as i got. Picked up just after PVS, thought quickly do the other one and get them them on for Billing..

Sat in the garage. Total mind blank. Couldn't figure it how as to how i did it, even with the photos i took.
First one took just under 2 hours. 2nd one took almost 4! I just couldn't do it. So it's no where near as well made and am not happy with it, so gonna get another cover and make another.
But... There's the finished item.

Fitting in the garage, found the trim for behind them too.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/received_10154413596782755_zpsnvufbglc.jpeg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/received_10154413596782755_zpsnvufbglc.jpeg.html)

Want the std kinda paint feel, so the covers are Arden blue and the casing is bumper grey to match the trim.
Then on a lil drive...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1895_zpsungrrxcg.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Stubby%20Mirror%20build/IMAG1895_zpsungrrxcg.jpg.html)

And of the car with them on... Just because.

Thank you, glad you like, bonnet "bra" is purely there to protect it. Saves getting the bonnet painted again and again.
The iron is a good bit of kit, had to take the bulb out of it tho, as i'm working with in right near my face. After a while it really gets to your eyes.

Thank you, i really like how they look. Look much nicer plus where they fit better and have the trims on, i dont get a window noise thru them like i did the Astra ones. Which bugged me, more so cause i couldn't find where it was from.

The pedal might not look as pretty as i could of made it, but its really strong and works great. So i'm more than happy with it. Plus the braking is soooooo much better! Pad gets proper hot and sticky now.

On that note, i've now dialed the rear pressure down a full turn. After pulling a 180 when i broke late and hard.

Benn

Thank you very much Ben,
At the start i was a lil worried i wouldn't be able to figure out how to do it nicely, But Scott gave me a few tips. Then when i had the case in my hand it all kinda just feel inline and i started cutting.

So annoying that the other side gave me grief, But know where i went wrong. so making another should be easier.

I just see things i want to make better/right. I'm still wanting to sort better wheels out. Then i can do the brake upgrades i want to do too. So there are a few things i want to do.
Could do with a full repaint too to tidy it up.

I'll be honest, there's a few things i see on other people car and think "that's not right.. why's that there?" Cause i've forgotten i've done something too it.
But i'm glad as for me its all the little stuff you notice that make cars for me. I love seeing a build where you think "oh i love that they've...."

Haven't been around the Nova for a couple of years due to a very close bereavement. So need to start my motivation up again. What do I do? I read this build thread and catch up from what I last saw! It's done the trick nicely, thank you. I will definitely have to recommission it and start enjoying it again. Maybe even get it to Billing this year.

Oh, and I like that you always reply to all comments. Nice touch.

This seems to have helped. Haven't had the bad running again.

Been very lazy up to crimbo, well, when i should of been playing cars, i've been in the gym or sat. Just tv lol. But though i should get on with something, as i've been putting off bay repairs.
So today i cracked on....

Ah, you a funny man.

I need to weld up the old servo holes in the bulkhead, there's also 2 brake line holes in the bulkhead which can now be seen with the servo gone. There's a hole in the chassis leg too, which there is no need for.. ;)
I have a small crack around the engine out too, which i might of made from when i smoothed the void behind it. So wanna sort that out before it becomes a prob.
Plus a refresh in paint's never a bad thing... ;)

i don't think it's commitment, more madness that i can't get it to where i'm happy with it.

When is the best time to remove your engine?
Clearly when its 2deg and starting to snow, so that's what i did.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG23872_zpsyrrjtphm.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG23872_zpsyrrjtphm.jpg.html)

Sadly the pic doesn't catch the snow... Here's where i started. Pass shaft out, starter wiring off, loosen mounts and then attach the hoist.

Angle box end right down. Lift out the top.
I'll admit, it's not as easy by your self. But totally do able. As always something was still connected.. Dan spotted the oil lines where still on..lol

Couldn't find my engine trolly... Used my laying down board instead... Works well.

The plus side with indoors is you're covered from the elements, whilst it might be as cold/colder in some cases you can always warm up.True about gassing,my space heater is like that, can be carbon monoxidey lol
I really miss my garage lol

When you have a van bigger than your garage it means I spent time fixing it outside all the time

I work indoors, but don't be fooled its colder in here than outside. Propane heater is a trade off between gassing myself and being warm.

I remember your old workshop, i can imagine it was freezing in there!
I have a lil elec heater, which with the door closed just takes the edge off.

Being out the rain makes everything easier. Plus you dont have to put everything away each time.

Lil bit done.
What to protect the car more, then welding and grinding. Saw the plastic sheets you see on Hotrod and bike building shows... They are alot of money.
So a trip to the scummy Range got me... Yes a std shower "curtain" is the same width as a Nova.

£2.99... Does the job.

Doesn't stop the dust tho....

Fiber glass sanded off, gave the holes next to it a gentle tap to recess then in so plates could be welded in. As one of them i can't get to the other side...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG24502_zpslcaonx1l.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG24502_zpslcaonx1l.jpg.html)

Started welding the small holes in the steering arm hole up.... As they are very untidy.

Filling holes....

found this... Wasn't a fan. had to go.

Finished the small holes in the steering arm hole. skimmed with filler too. Brake servo holes reskimmed too.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG24962_zpshwh7kgov.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG24962_zpshwh7kgov.jpg.html)

All sanded down, on the other side. I found i had a crack by my engine out. Not bad for 10 years use and 2 extra bits reworked by it.
Wanted to fix it rather than have issues later. So i took it back along the leg to check for any hidden issues. As we all know what Novas like to do under coverings.

Thank you, I'll be honest, it wasnt to bad, just a bit slow. Getting the rear mount on was a frigging nightmare!

Rear mount took 45mins. It just never lines up.

Sunday was the day...

Got the car out, fed the loom in to the bay, fed the fuel lines up and taped both out the way.
Rolled the engine out of its dusty corner.

Fitting the engine took longer than normal as i was doing it by my self.
So had to keep checking all sides to make sure nothing touched. Which it didn't.

Then the worse bit. The rear mount. Took about 45mins to get the rear mount to line up. Was a bloody nightmare!
While i was struggling and stressing, it started to bloody rain!
Bring on the RAGE!

Had to make a quick cover to try and start dry.... After having to change from being soaked thru.

Still missing while driving which wasn't fun.

Next up was MHS (Billing but not at Billing)
So i wanted to sort my scuttle cover out where i had a hole for the m/c. So cracked out the fiberglass and resin.

This would of be ok, but i missed in a bit to much hardner. So couldn't get the shaping right...
Off to MHS we went. Sadly with a misshapen nipple on the scuttle cover...

BUT. Back to rocking polished turbo rims!

Great show, but when stopping for fuel, i noticed water pouring out the bottom of the car... GREAT.
All from this!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG2778_zpscnhj2cxj.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG2778_zpscnhj2cxj.jpg.html)

Swapped to a next black silicone hose from Roose Motorsport.
While i was there still looking at the running issues, i removed my adjustable fuel reg. Just incase it was breaking down and give me issues as i found oif i nailed it hard the car would hit a wall. Worse than the limiter.

While doing that i changed all my fuel lines, cause the braided stuff looks great but is a nightmare to work with. Plus changed my very old fuel filter just it case it helped.

Running on, with a blip of a misfire every so often.

Back to my scuttle cover.
Started a fresh this time. New cardboard template, spent ages getting it all shaped right, cut a new tidier better m/c hole.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG28802_zpsebqmuewz.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG28802_zpsebqmuewz.jpg.html)

This time i cable tied the matting to the m/c cap then did the resin work... So its a proper cap like smoothed in shape.

Bit of sanding then off to get flocked again. Much tidier job.

So still with the running issues.
After reading what people have said, i'm gonna bin off the standard ecu and loom and going after market.
Will be a nicer and better way of doing it all. Better running, fully set up and less sensors too.

I do seem to be slacking at adding updates..

Where did i get too? Ah yes, engine running like crap all the time. So only one thing for it... Aftermarket ecu and custom loom.
So out with the old... remove the old loom and started mocking up for a custom loom all hidden away... As i do.
Found out that i can run the coil on plug set up.. Thought why not.
Using Toyota yaris coils...

THis is where bad luck hit.

Car starting smoking. No clue why at the time.
I left T&R very unhappy and very wet. (started to lash down while loading it on the truck)
Mapping was stopped with just the low down useage settings done. So i can move it around on the drive. But thats it.

Steve and Jim at T&R Suggested a few things to look at.
My cam cover main breather was kinked, sorted that but still puffing.
So got a leak down tester to check the rings, all seem ok. Compresion test done, all where the same.

Noticed my dump valve had blow oil out of it...
Took it off to find...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG0138_zpsldimwk4r.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20Updates%20July%202014%20on/IMAG0138_zpsldimwk4r.jpg.html)

Oh thats alot of oil... About half a liter was sitting in my intercool.

So Dan suggested taking the down pipe off to check the turbo.
There was alot of movement in the hotside.
Turbo stripping going on.

Fitting.
Primed and started, no smoke.

Test drove around the block a few times.... No smoke.

Was very happy. Booked back in at track and road.

All started ok.... Till it started smoking from the breather again so had to stop. Its better than it was, but when pushed it just starts to breath hard and smoke.

Sounds like it might be time to rip the engine out and give it a bit of a refresh, or have you thought about z20leh engine? Wouldn't b any harder to fit and you have the dta management that could run it.

Although it does look cracked, being it was pro refurbed it can't be surely? Unless damaged in transit??

It definitely looks like a crack and would explain the smoking, you need to kick some ass and get some money back Ben ;)

Yes and no. This is a tiny crack, with is right on the surface. You cant get your nail in it. It isnt on the seat. Nor does it go thru to the other side.
The turbo was rebuilt by some one knows what they are doing.
It was pressure tested to 90k rpm and boost tested to 30psi.
THe seat seals 100%.

If it was cracked, It would not cause smoking at all. It would give a boost leak. And it doesn't leak boost at all.

But no time at all to be able to build a block up, so i'll build one up and swap it after Billing.

Very unhappy.

Christ I've been slacking off.
Where did I get too? As yes the smoking.
After many people's advice, I plumbed the breather back in to the turbo.

Testing...

I sat in the pass seat looking out the back as Dan drove.
Only smoke was tyre....

Happy days! 3rd times.
Small puff on left off... At 6.5k so I'm not worried about that.

Next day... Off to Retro rides!
Quicky made a plug cover up... Being gay and showing the cop set up...

266miles of perfect running.... Then Dan drove it from the services and we lost all boost! Shit.

Slowly took it a part trying to check everything.

Everything seemed fine, till I RE checked the actuator.

Jammed open. Put 50psi of pressure thru it + and - and it wouldn't move a mm. Totally jammed.

Luckily I found 2 spares. Fitted one, boost straight away.

Happy.
That's me all caught up.

Benn

Oh and I had no bumper, grille, headlights or air filter.

So didn't wanna stand out anymore
