Cracking job Benn. Everyone seems to enjoy working on such a clean car lol do they wash there hands in oil to feel normal when finished :D

lol nah, and its getting cleaner as i go.

awsome work mate, your a brave man going through the top with that paint rep for that man !!!

This will pop op a few times in this bunch of replys but, theres more room than you and alot of people think when doing in the top. Thank you very much tho :)

Looking good mate! not feeling the colour coded gear box though!

Cheers dude, and no?

Looks superb! You think you would have painted that front gearbox mount!!

As said, i found the o/s mount has cracked. So i'l be getting a new one so when thats fitted, i'm planning to pop the gearbox mount off and repaint it.
Wasnt really planning on fitting the lump today tbh. But we got in the zone.

EPPIIIICCCC I TELLS YA!!!
Soon have that LET running & purring like a kitten :D

lol chill dude, will be running soon i hope.

Awesome work there Benn, wish mine was coming on at this pace!!!

Never seen a engine going in thru the top tho!!!! Tried it with a small block once, never again!!! Let alone a big block. If I were you I'd been very worried bout damaging you lovelly bay!!......respect.

Cheers dude its nice to really get cracking on it tbh.
As i said above, there is loads of room when going in from the top. You need a bit of angel on it yes but its easy to slot in.
Got a bit close to the bulk head at one point as the engine wasnt sitting right but a old jumper and my hand worked at a soft blocker..lol

Absolutely amazing, not much else to say that hasnt already been said.

Thank you very much, will be at the shows so come and have a look and a chat if you're at them.

Some would being paid wouldnt care as much.
Doing it all your self means you get that better feeling.

If i had know i was gonna fit a let when i start doing the bay, then i'd have sorted a f28 mount, but i didnt, so i didnt.

F20 should last a while, but if it does die then i'll sort any f28 out.

Bit lose onthe top hat, but fits the lengh of stainless i have and the dv T piece thing ok so thats cool, more on its way to me :)

Moved on to the turbo, right by the let let there is this,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7629.jpg

Kinda held in by a 10mm bolt, what is it?

Stripped off the inlet pipe, as it will be cut to clear the slam pannel.
Now i'd like to remove this, recirc bit, but the other side has a spring on it, if i un bolt it will it pop apart? Or can i just unbolt it?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7641.jpg

Blades look ok, no movement in and out or side to side, seems clean in there too.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7630.jpg

Sat the turbo in place,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7632.jpg

Wanted to have alook at the rad clearance..
With the rad sitting back (in the tie bar mount hole)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7637.jpg

This is where the rads sits,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7636.jpg

With it in the normal holes it sits here,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7635.jpg

Which is enough clearance, so thats all good.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7633.jpg

Rad in,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7634.jpg

Ic sitting in place, gotta cut the mounts on the bottom off to get it sitting right. Will sit about an inch lower when done.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7638.jpg

Ic out lets are longer than i first thought, But with a elbow ended on in place theyt should clear ok.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7639.jpg

Now so i can plan on piping what are they all.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7632.jpg

1. Water in? Back to headder tank?
2.Oil out..
3. Oil in..
4. Water out? Back to headder tank linking in with rad run off?
5.??
6. Pressure? To amal?

Thank you.

Ive had to cut mine off and its still very tight.

I assume your using 90degree elbows? Ive had to cut of the tabs (marked red) and its still very tight. Unless the hoses will sit behind them? Cooler im using looks the same width

Oh, you might want to put some more wax on your front panel before you put too many bits on :p

is it one of them tx autosport ones? did like the look of them but didnt think theyd be any good compared to a forge one.

what do you think of the quality? what type of power you going to be running through it?

bruce

Benn
20-05-09, 09:33 PM
I think its is the same yeah, as it looks it in the pic and the sizes are the same.
Quality is 100%, really well and nicely welded, would tell anyone to get one.
For 70-80 you couldnt get better and better value for money.

Benn
20-05-09, 09:33 PM
Oh any one with the turbo connections number in the pics?

dan16v
20-05-09, 10:43 PM
Benn does not look like you have that much room on the cooler to chop the inlet/outlet back? how about chopping them off all together, getting the holes blanked, then getting the inlet/outlet welded back on at a 45 deg angle? Obviously if it will fit with 90's then fair play

Rich
20-05-09, 11:12 PM
I think he meant hes having the cooler pipes modded, i assume cut/alloy welded at an angle?

If im right, what sort of places will do this?

Benn
21-05-09, 07:46 AM
They will be cut flush with the cooler, then have the elbows welded on.

Any welder/metal fab place can do this and theres one next door to my polishers.

dan16v
21-05-09, 11:55 AM
ah cool get you mate, any place can do it as said, just need to know if they do ally tig, as not all places are set up for aluminium!

yeh i see what your saying, but to have them cut off and welded back on will add to the price. one of the small forge ones are around 160 i think and you can choose where the outlets go.

will definately consider one of these though.:thumb:

You may find the above useful!

Most people leave off the hot start valve(6) from the vacuum system so what you do is run your vacuum from the fuel reg into the throttle body but have the a t-piece coming off the line down to the turbo.

If you're running an external fuel regulator you move the vacuum from the standard one to that and leave the standard one "un-vacummed" as it where.

Also, if you're not runnng the tank vent valve system (most won't be I just blocked off the vacuum at the throttle body.

Hope that mkes sense.

Yep have the pic of which way around the vacum lines go i think.

Yeah know about blocking the tank vent off, running the std fuel reg. I can just leave the hot start valve pluged in tho.. Will be happy wont it?

No, will just keep on top of them, they where all metal poilshed (cleaner and protecter) then had 2 coats of wax on them.

awesome project this one benn, dont think i have commented on it before but i have been keeping an eye on this.

Leave the hot start plugged in but not plumbed in yeah.

The standard LET hose for no.4 is a straight bit with a 90deg on the end that fits perfectly on the top rad end if you loosen the connection on the turbo and tweak the angle.

Your no.1 goes to the top of the header tank (easily hidden, especially with your setup)...

(you can see the 90deg kink on the left and how I loosened it and change the angle. Don't copy my angle tho as my rad was in standard position!)

No point buying an unbrokwn hot start vavle then... Sure it will start from hot better with it working?

Numner1 i'll tweek and move, then join it to a metal pipe then up to the header tank, where does your water out go? Looks like its to the stat?

The Simps
22-05-09, 10:42 PM
Never had any probs with my hot start not plumbed in but then again didn;t use it every day! Should be fine tho. From my understanding they're more prone to causing problems than running right.

The hose is just flopped over out the way in that pic but does go perfectly to the top right (standing from front) outlet on the rad.

Back into the rad on the top outlet. The std hose is perfect for it, you just need to tweak the solid pipe angle. You can see it going across the top in this 1st pic then how it loops in on the 2nd.

Only thing to worry about is keeping it away from the fan if you're going rear mounted.

Craig: wouldnt you beileve it was a gen vx item 3years ago.. It does look tatty but you can see thru all rad fins so i've found. but it does look like it leaks in the bottom corner so i might try and get another one.
Like the ally ones but they are so over priced.

That's never a Genuine one. I'd say your dealer out-sourced that rad. Look at the one in Simps's pics, same as mine. I used to have one like what you have. I bought it new from a factors, a Serck replacement rad, but I got shot of it as it had such a thin core & was generally crap. If you see a Valeo one, like mine or Simp's, you'll know what I mean.

All good though. :thumb:

Hhhmmm cheers for the pics Si, does it not matter your removing the bleed off for the rad then?

Craig, i see what you mean, maybe thats why i have a bit of extra room...
Never been a prob tho, cooled ok but has been leaking.

As Craig said, your rad is an aftermarket type thin core one, its the same one as ive just fitted to mine, very thin core compared to my old valeo one.

Looking good though, everything nice and clean.

Just remove that mesh and bin it....

Had a good day, big big thanks to Dan, Pete and Dave.

Be cause i want the loom hidden as much as possible the loom needed to be extended, adding to that it needed to be repaired because the owner before had it badly fitted in to a vectra.
Dan set about repairing and extending the loom...

Loads of inagination as always. Battery is going in the rear then? Does that afm cable need to be that long?

Benn
24-05-09, 12:06 AM
Yeah battreys going in the boot just to give a bit more room up front.
If the afm wiring was in the bay no, but as mine runs down the inside of the arch then out by the tie bar mount, yeah its needs to be made longer.
This way you wont see it at all.

The union that goes into the "IN" of the bias valve is the wrong way round.

Also use thread lock on it and nip it up tight in a vice - PS thanks for the wiper motor :)

Benn
24-05-09, 12:12 AM
Doesnt fit the other way Si, its a 1/8 thread, which is the side of the threded hole in the bias (yank made) the other end is m10 for the english.

Got a bit more done today, but again its all little stuff.

Plumbed in the amal vavle and pluged it in. Need a few meters of small silcon tubing to run for the boost and pressure lines and such tho.

Runt he wiring loom and got it P-cliped in to place, not 100%happy where they run tho, but i need bigger P-clips. So it will be redone.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7712.jpg

Finished off the inlet, got the rail built up and on, loom on. Just need to workout where all the small pipes go to.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7702.jpg

Even cleaned the dirt out of the grooves..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7703.jpg

Gave the thermostat a buff overand got that fitted.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7705.jpg

Doesnt look as nice here as it does in the flesh.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7709.jpg

Gave this a light coat of lacquar as they are a low qual ally so oxid up fast.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7711.jpg

With that fitted i could get the turbo in place..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7713.jpg

Now i can see where the inlet needs to be cut to, can work out the water and breath pipes too.

Christ, all this over a few wires.

Cracked on to day, got the coilovers back on after a clean, hubs on, shafts in with new cvs boots and all bolted on.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7716.jpg

The pass side has a new braided line too, the drivers one just been cleaned up.
Drivers side all built up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7724.jpg

Got the dizzy built back up and all fitted.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7723.jpg

While i was doing that Dan carried on doing wiring. Using the connector i bought, the battrey wiring comes stright to it, with a starter and alt take off and the ecu 12v. Very nice.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7718.jpg

Dan then carried on with the loom on the inside and got everything connected up beautifully.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7727.jpg

I've putting allthe pipe work i have out to start working out ic pipes, but i need to get the i/c welded first so thats my first job tomoz.
Worked out where my turbo inlet needs to be cut so thats going to the same guy too.

And we found the end of the wire to the OE oil pressure and light, Dan worked a bit of wiring magic and thats not all working. So we powe and a ecu it should start.

Got the fuel lines on and connected, found a need a small one way vavle for the small rocker cover breather.

Doesnt seam like much, but..

Im frigging knackerd. Been working on the car since 10ish. Doesnt feel like i've done that much tho. Started off sorting out the inlet. Isnt the best fix, but for the time being it will do.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7819.jpg

Which clears the pipes and brings the afm to sit here..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7825.jpg

Which is ok, but i can move it so it sits over more.

Then got the knackerd old water pipe off.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7816.jpg

Found a bit of pipe the fitted with a bit of work. (polished jubliee clip..)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7817.jpg

Didnt like the copper pipe, but lucky the rubber hose was long enough. Now runs here.. (yes its P-cliped up with the loom)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7818.jpg

Started cracking on with the exhaust.. Fitted the down pipe, fitted my system to work out where they meet and make the cut.
No wonder my system was hard to cut... The flange still had 3inches of pipe on it, this was slide in and welded to the rest of the pipe, good way to do it really.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7821.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7820.jpg

Now they just about line up so i can do a slotted join, but i had to bolt the down pipe on with some long bolts and xe manifold springs, is that ok? Or do i need let stuff??

Made a cut to give a lil angle so they meet nicely, then i can then weld up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7822.jpg

Then on to connecting the ic, now one ends all sorted. But the other end i've been waiting on a hose, so set about making one from odds and sods.. Nothing i have at all fits! C**Ts.

Polished up my water pipes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7824.jpg

Piped up the rest of the system, its all now ready to go..

So its ready to start as soon as i can get something sorted for the ic pipe.

Need a bolt for the uj on the streering. Any one know the size? m6 is to small, m8 is to big..

Clutch cable in and sorted, gear linkage in needs setting up tho.
Speedo cable is in.
Cam belt covers on, bottom pullys on with new belt fitted. (had a few laying about..lol)
Coils fitted, tiny bodge here but its fitted. Wiring might need extending tho.
Fuel tank vent valves fitted,
The one way vavle i havesa a bit small tho, so i need some of the juliee clips that are for small fuel lines.

Did a lil trail fit...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7826.jpg

Cool, lettering will be blue. Nicly covers up my shine bts tho :(
But they are there...lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7827.jpg

Water pipes in that bit are a bit untidy, but i cant find any other way to use them.

Bolted the oil cooler on and fitted the new sump plug.
Shes now filled with the finest Gm 10/40.
And has brand new plug too.

Really funked off its now running, but i know its ready to.

Don't leave the inlet like that for too long. I've known of a properly welded one to break because your pipe stay's still while your engine moves.

Mid 13's if the driver is any good. Standard XE's can do really low 14's and LET's are a fair bit quicker.

I used the LET springs on the downpipe with new studs as mine were all corroded but a spring is a spring at the end of the day so as long as it fits it should be fine.

Notice you have the wrong type of nuts holding the turbo manifold to the head though, not sure how much difference the correct ones make but Vauxhall must have chose to do them different for a reason?

Also looks like you have fitted an XE exhaust manifold gasket, LET ones are shiny metal?

Benn
01-06-09, 08:57 PM
Lee: I've had to use xe manifold nuts as i don't have an let ones (came with xe ones) and you cant buy let ones any more..

Gasket wise, it came in a head gasket set and the all list xe and let the same, looked like the one that came off...

dan16v

Benn normal manifold nuts will be fine, But as Lee said, im pritty sure the let manifold gasket should have a metal layer to help with the heat, i know myne has.

Autovaux do the proper studs still, quite expensive though.

I'd get a LET manifold gasket from them too as i'm sure its shiny metal backed due to the heat.

Edit - Dan just beat me to it.

I've never run a cooler before, never had the need. Or any probs with heat, even after being on track all day. Only running it now cause anyone thinks it needed. It is only there as a temp job, but its still gonna be in line with the air flow.. So should do something.

Today's update.

Cracked on again.
Got the brakes fill with fluid. Bled the front two up fine then moved to the rears. This is when Dan noticed (he was pumping the pedal) that the bias was leeking. Great!
Tightent all the fixings up a bit more.. Still leaking. Did them up funking to the point of snapping them tight.. Still leaking. No matter how tight it leaked. But it was the 1/8 to m10 bit that was the prob, would make a good seal to the valve... Deep funking joy so screw it, we joined the lines up together and guess what? They as as water proof as a ducks **** under water.

Bled the rears up, Dans says the pedal feels good.(i havent tried it before you ask)

Fitted the back box, put 5lts of fuel in.

Fitted all the dash back in, backing a stuipd heater cable in the process, but as i needed to find a wiper motor we popped to the scrappy and lucky there was a nova in there so got a few bits and the heater cable too.
Have got a Ax wiper motor for a temp fit. Just need to work out the arm fitted.

Sorted/lined up the gear linkage first time too.. We're awesome.

Droped it on to its wheels. Now either i've for gotten it was so low from it being on axel stands or.. Well i dont know but the slam pannels on my knees!

Then started it up again, started second try. Still a bit tappy but i dont know the last time it was run and i've cleaned all the tappits out too. But it holds boost at -10/9 is that good? Has good oil pressure too.
Let it get warm, seems ok exhaust is still blowing and has a really odd (think i know why) bad rattle from in side it.. But think i can fix that with a drill and welder..

Need some cooling fans, hope they come tomoz. If not might have to try to get mine to fit. All i can think of...

Shame but as said maybe a blessing, these things take time and if your anything like me then you'll want it looking its best and not half complete etc. Yes I do have rear discs but I think turbo rims may have to wait for the next project as the spending has come to an end on this car now.

Nick.

Oh has it?

Is that the bolt end?

I fitted mine by using a bolt through the scuttle hole and locking it in place with some nuts tightened against each other so it wont move.
