View Full Version : Benn's on going build
Cracked on too day.
Well got these yesterday. Needed fittings for my oil cooler, so i popped to a local hydro place and got these..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit413.jpg
Then took the std cooler lines apart..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit417.jpg
Then found some strong pipe which i had in stock.. And made this up..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit411.jpg
Polish jubilee clip of coarse..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit415.jpg
That gave me this...
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit414.jpg
Fits hidden in the front, wing against the front panel. Which i might made a few air holes in, as it will get direct air there.
Now who remembers the water pipe i didn't like?
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/radandwaterpipes1.jpg
Too many clips on it, just looked messy..
While i was getting the oil cooler fittings i asked about tubing.. So popped back and asked if they could bend me something like the pipes shape..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit416.jpg
Needed a little cutting to shape. And a good polish..
(after a light buff)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit418.jpg
Made up..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit41.jpg
Fitted.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit46.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit45.jpg
Also got a nice set of better fitting stainless P clips to hold the fuel lines up..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit44.jpg
Filled the engine was oil, gear box oil, water and then fuel, fit new plugs. Battery on... Turn over to get the oil pressure up.. Then try and start....
And boom it started right almost right away. One slightly noisey tappet.. Then switch off as one water pipe was leaking.. Tighten up hose clip. Re start engine, good steady idle, no bad noises.
The fuel return to the tank is leaking a bit, so need to check that out. But she runs! :)

are all your braided fuel hoses using push-on connections?

Brilliant pal top work.
That oil cooler pipe you had made is exactly what I was thinking. Did it cost much to get done?
Good work on the water pipe too :thumb:
I would have used that as a turbo cooler and got a smaller cooler for the oil
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/enginerefit413.jpg
Turbo water pipe looks great dude!
Needs a bit more buffing to mirror it up tho, but its nice.
are all your braided fuel hoses using push-on connections?
Yeah, using the small fuel style jubilee clips.. Why? None leak by the fuel return at the tank end..
Brilliant pal top work.

Cheers dude, the fittings where 14£ cause i had to put them on my card as i have no folding money.. I had the tube in stock..

A turbo cooler? You mean IC? I have one.. The oil cooler is the smallest i could find, 8-9row (iirc) and about 9-10 inch long.

a great evolution from already a super build.

Could you not have got the water pipe bent to the radius of the cross member and clipped it to the back of that?
Also mate them I/c end pipes are less than ideal being mitred is there no way you could have used some short radius 90's?
Looking clean tho!

Ah, none of the rest leak. i'm gonna trim the braiding back a bit, see i the tube in the middle isn't right at the end or something...

There's no real room going up the back of the rad, so i don't think i could of..
The ic was gonna have a 90deg pipe put in as my cad he said wasn't best for air flow.. Then did the same kinda thing... Think it will be a prob?
Cheers too.
Stripped my coilovers down for a clean up and new top mounts. Take note Mr Day....
Eww road grim and sh*te..

Grit and stuff..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/Coilovercleanup2.jpg
Knackered.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/Coilovercleanup3.jpg
All stripped down, top bits cleaned and painted.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/Coilovercleanup10.jpg
Some one asked how big my bump stops are... So while they where off...
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/Coilovercleanup5.jpg
Again some one asked, this is my piston at its full length..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/Coilovercleanup16.jpg
Platform off, soaked it over night to clean it, copper slipped threads and re fit. Set platform again.. (measured it first to know where)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/Coilovercleanup6.jpg
Rebuild it all now its all clean. With new top mounts.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/Coilovercleanup7.jpg
Refit to car.
Next, get some 5mm thick strip. Mark out.. and cut..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Car%20up%20dates%20May%2011%20on/Coilovercleanup12.jpg
Need to drill tho..

These are spacers for my calipar brackets..

In this case, small is best.

Benn for easy sake i would of drilled then cut mate, but nothing better then hindsight! lol
good idea on rebuilding the top mounts mate, so what shows you 100% at, and are you with mig with all of them?
Scott
how comes you didnt go for eccentric top mounts?
what is the total length of shock body and then with the piston then?
alloy top mounts could be polished:thumb:
Cracked on to day..
First off gave my arches a damn good cause they where minging!

Been out for a drive.. Grips like funk with the diff! Bit scary at first! Al good bar that..
well done benn, you seem to get through your build like your in a time warp. have you tried 6th yet? :)
Benn for easy sake i would of drilled then cut mate, but nothing better then hindsight! lol
good idea on rebuilding the top mounts mate, so what shows you 100% at, and are you with mig with all of them?
Scott
True, but i gave them to my dad to drill in his pillar drill, so it's clamped in. They are done and fitted, work really well too :)
Looking the the top mounts today, the old one are GM, so might be from the factory.. lol and the bearings where shot to bit.
I'm at PVS with Tv as they want my car on their stand, Billing with Mig, TV live with Mig, Combe with Mig.. So come find me and the car..
how comes you didnt go for eccentric top mounts?
what is the total length of shock body and then with the piston then?
I did have them, but was top they might make the ride harder. Didn't want it any harder..
The shock is the extra short model, but didn't measure it.
alloy top mounts could be polished:thumb:
They can yes.

You think thats tight! You cant even fit a pube between the strut and rim on the front of the vectra! lol
Good to see it running dude. Have you got to run it in or can you give it the foot?
Does it torque steer more with the diff benn? is that why its scary or is it just the fact it pulls off faster?
You think thats tight! You cant even fit a pube between the strut and rim on the front of the vectra! lol
I believe him yet do not want to know how he knows this.
Balley, have you ever driven a car, the capabilities of which were far too much for the public highway? It's a bit scary lol
You think thats tight! You cant even fit a pube between the strut and rim on the front of the vectra! lol
Good to see it running dude. Have you got to run it in or can you give it the foot?
Doesn't worry me.. It's not touching so it's fine in my eyes..lol
Run it in? That was going around the block..lol
Took it out and picked up KFC with Dan last night, was on full boost most of the time..lol But still leaning to corner with the diff as its so different to drive. It just drags you thru a corner now, only thing losing grip are the tyres..
But it makes quite a scary drive. It just drives so different. So i've only given it semi death in to corners just in case. But did manage to under take and over take two car at the same time..lol
Feels very light under braking too. But it might be cause i've been used to driving heavey cars and work van.
Does it torque steer more with the diff benn? is that why its scary or is it just the fact it pulls off faster?
From what i've felt, no. No torque steer at all which is good. Its just the way it pulls and drives now..
I believe him yet do not want to know how he knows this.

Exactly how I felt about mine, ok mine wasn't diffed up etc but it was pretty light, stripped to where most track cars are and no cage so -50kg or so! and the KU31's just pushed it's limits beyond what I was happy exploring on the roads lol

I love the wheels, just don't think they are enough compared to the rest.. Not showy enough..
I almost bought a 3rd set, to paint in grey.. But wasn't sure if they'd be too dark and not look right...

Yeah i have a polarizing (sp) lens filter, so you can remove some reflection with that and it was a little cloudy too witch helped.
So shiny you need special lenses to photograph it in cloudy weather lol

You must be driving like a girllol , Myne would almost go into the other lane when it came on boost with the quaffe!, even the Focus RS pulls the steering wheel around on boost with the atb:d

The equal length shaft really helps to stop that. I removed mine as it's fooked and fitted a normal long big shaft and the torque steer is noticeable!

Is that maybe cause you both run more boost? I can nail it in 3rd and it just pulls forward more..

As Keith said, it was worse when it had the long shaft.
I'll try it again but sure the torque steer isn't that bad..

I'm sure i read that you are ment to just power thru them, not letting off.. Do it diff with drag you thru it, which is what i've been doing...
dont suppose you know what length steel you used for the chassis rails
i need to order some metal but my car aint here to measure lol
ill be doing the same as you did the full length of the rail plus the but that goes out to the sill
I had about 1/2 meter each side, but that doesn't inc the angled end bit.

Sadly the finish isn't 100% great, as the filter is very cheap tin so doesn't really polish up that well.

benn random question but im sure your the man to ask, whats your method/preferd prouducts for flatting and polishing paintwork? i know you have used 3m products in the past, do you use 1500-2000 grade sandpaper? i was thinking of using a fine sanding sponge? have you used these before?
your nova's looking sweet as ever btw:)
cheers

I use 1200 and 1500, as i dont have any 2000. But you can get 2 and 3000 sponge like discs that are very good.
I use a sponge block/pad with loads of water with a lil soap in it.
Then use a 3m compound head and G3 to polish it back up, then 3m Ultrafina to remove the last marks before glaze and wax.
I did write a "how too" for here, but never uploaded it...

All my jubliee clips are stainless, Std GM ones are (bar the screw mech) If i replace them fully i get all stainless.

Ben doesn't do gold, the ones on the oil lines are polish, but are a bit low quality. I'll get them changed.
Filter looks awesome.
Thank you sir.
Been watching this thread on MIG too.
I'm really impressed with the level of quality and detail on this car.
Thank you very much. I do try.
Stripped down my passenger door to fix the window runner, when i say fix i mean mod to clean the Audi handles. As i had to remove the rear runner, which ment the window wasn't running right/sitting right. So it couldn't be opened all the way and would some times jam.
So stripped the whole window/runner/trim down on the door. Had to cut the runner bar right down, but it still have the strength to hold the rubber and glass in right. Oil the rubbers up too and now the glass can be fully opened up and runs freely. Which is very nice. Then cleaned the door card up and fed the leather.
I stripped down the drivers side door today, did all the same things i did on the pass side, then found i had cut the runner thinking it was the pass one. Which ment i had cut the wrong side out, bugger. So with a little work and one of the bars from a CL kit, i remade it, got it all fitted and again oil the rubbers... Now the window works like a dream!
With the door card off, i could fit the sound deadening (sp?) pads in on the insides as i like the clunk when you close the door and it keeps the sound in/out too. Then used half a can of the Waxseal in the bottoms of the door and well all over tbh. Till it ran out the bottom. Refitted the card and gave it a good clean and fed the leather.. So that's two things off my list..lol
This morning when i when out to the car, i found a puddle of gear oil under the car.. Deep joy.
Looking under the car i could see it was dipping out of the pass side gear box seal.. so strip it all down, remove the seal, getting oil all over my face. Stripped the seal from my old F20 and got it all re fitted. Hope this one will be better. While i was in the wing i refitted my horn as my mot is on Wed.
While i was doing that Dan popped over and gave me a hand and changed my rocker cover gasket, as i hope that is what's been leaking oil down the front of the block. He fitted my nice set of shiney bolts too :)
Wheres the pics man?
I was at least expecting the army man to be climbing over the window runner lol lol
Haha didnt get chance to take any, ill make up for it.

Looking perfect as always Benn. You may be interested in a wheel a found last night whilst scouring the net.
I know you like BBS CH's but they only come in 17"+... well there are BBS CO's available in 16" and 5 stud (although 5x120) but they are, near as makes no difference, the same as BBS CH's just without the 'MOTORSPORT' engraving around the centre hole.

Really getting pixxed off that I can't seem to find quality wheels and wheels designs by top manufacturers that fit the Nova well. They're either 17"+ or have a ridiculous offset. I thought I was on to a winner when I saw these CO's as they start at 16" but only managed to fine them in 5 stud. Wierd when you think LM's that are 18"+ come in 4 stud

Not really payed much attention to them, but when I saw it Sunday I noticed them and didnt like them. And again on the pics that were posted.
Maybe Euro's? Ive never really been a fan of dark lights though.

Dont be silly, the nova will never be finished lol I like the rear lights btw, but im a abit biased as ive got a set waiting to go on mine
Stop surfing the net then... Get working.. Could have been done at this rate.
Theres not really many options with novas and rear light I think as yours is a dark colour and darks bumpers I think tints look good don't know what else you could do really without it looking daft! Clear ones wouldn't look right standard are boring! I havnt seen euro ones on it yet!

No when they go mad trying to make things better.
 I take it you do like the paint finish on the roof ? lol
Thought you only painted the roof last year ?
I'm not, at all. Yes it was, but the primer sunk and you could see sanding marks in it and they where a reaction in it from some guide coat i used when sanding it all flat. So needs to be done again as they where very clearly noticeable.
Just looked at the pics a couple of pages back. Car looks stunning as usual Benn. Will you be going to Billing?
Cheers Sir, and yes i will be. On with Mig, so make sure you walk over.. I'll come to the png stand tho as always and take pics..

I'd be interested to see what paint stripper does to filler, does it dissolve it?
Your roof must have Been terriblelol
No, it lifts the edges but that's it. Lucky there's none in that bit of the roof.
It was bad enough it pissed me off.
ben doodar
17-06-11, 09:18 PM
So then been, what's the best way to stop the primer/filler from shrinking after a while?
When I did my mini when I was first learning my dad told me to flat back the repaired area with 320's wetndry then mixed a small amount of cellulose thinners to some knifing stopper so that your able to brush it on with a paint brush then flat back with 320s again. It works brilliantly. People said that it will shrink over time, but it's never done in about 10 years. lol
My mates dad who's pretty funking awesome when it comes to spraying says that he would never wet flat over filler as it absorbs it. Which is true. And then use's a high build primer to take away any pin holes and fine scratches.
Are you having the whole roof sprayed and blending into the pillars?
"Must spread the love before I pass it on to benn again" lol lol
Its a very hard one, as it shouldn't at all.
I've been *taught to 320 dry high build primer, then 800 wet it. |But not too wet.
It was left to fully dry over a few days. But about 3 days after it was painted you could see sanding marks and marks under it.
But to rub primer down smooth you can use a guide coat, which i did.
But when it was painted it start to react under the base, so it was flatted off and re based, same thing. Left to dry, re based, this time it was ok. Lacquer on all ok. Day or so after you could it in patches.... (you cant feel or anything)
Only way to fix it is to remove it.... So if i strip to bare, etch and high build primer it then paint it should be ok.
Boot off, screen semi out, yes blended down the pillars. Mirrors re done at the same time.
ben doodar
17-06-11, 10:01 PM
Yes mate makes perfect sense to just totally remove the problem rather then keep trying to resolve it. This time you know it's not going to come back to hunt you lol
I had a similar thing with my mini It sat outside unused for about 18 months when I pulled it into the garage the roof had got 100's of tiny little bubbles in it. By time I'd flatted them back primered then noticed there were some more re-primered flatted back re-primerd again and again I wish I'd just stripped the whole lot back like you've done.
Do it right do it once.
10/10
Yep, do it fresh and clean. I have a small say 1mm by 1mm lump like bit too. Right on the edge by the sunroof. I dont know what it is (rust, filler lifting) so i wanna check that too. If it's rust. I'm gonna clean it out and fix it and maybe then change the roof skin later in the year.

lol not talented.
You have BIG balls doing this so close to the vboa weekend! But going back to the metal is sometimes the only way to cure an underlying problem. If you do find rust I think Id rather cut and piece it than replace the skin. I know they arent that hard to replace but Ive seen many that have had it done and they show riples down the sides of the skin and gutter rails. You could even go to the scrapyard and cut a large piece of that exact area to make life even easier. ;)

I was expecting the whole roof to be stripped back to be honest. Looks like it's had some paint in its life lol!! Looks like you've flatted it all back even though.
It's been fully stripped now, i run out of sanding discs so finished it off at the body shop today. Sun roof glass is out, front screen is out, boot ready to come off. Being primered in the morning.
The roof was only rubbed down when it was first painted (rest was mostly bare metalled) so there's prob 6layers of paint on it...

Good work Benn, awesome dedication to the car as well
1m x 1m rust spot and you stripped the roof !?! lol I got a spot the size of a 20p coin on my roof where the muppets at SPL fooked up :(
Cheers Edd,
Its the fact it's there tho, i fixed a bit next to it and that was fine. Its the prob that it is right on where the sunroof surround is welded/bonded. So if the car sweats that is where water gets trapped. So even tho i wire brushed it all clean, rust treated it, painted it, then under seal waxed it. It can still get it. Which pi**ed me off.
And you'll take it back to get it fixed, believe me its grates on you every time you see it.. And with roofs cause they are what you look down at (might just be mine cause of the lowness) but you cant not see it.
Started the day off with a bit of tracking. As i've found the car pulls to the right, last night on a quiet motorway in the inside lane i found if i even gently sped up the car would drive across to the outside lane..
Popped to the Local ProTyre. Only place i trust. Big thanks to Paul, Jim and Kenny.

sorry mate but its the other way round on FWD, what you have is correct for RWD as when you gun it the torque will force the wheels to toe out a little as it pushes the car forward, whereas in a FWD when the tyres grip and drag the car forward the same torque pulls the wheels in, so you need to start with toe out
what actual settings did you go for?
I thought toe in was good for straight line stability and 'safeness' whereas a bit of toe out helps cornering/turn in.

Oh bugger, well its only a tiny bit. Both fronts are 0.6- right in right on the end of the "safe" zone on there setting. So as its still in the ok i guess it should be ok. But next time i'm there i'll get it set the other.
