Cool Cheers.
Helps protect too.

*if you do it tho, the car must be bone dry, i like 4-5 days inthe dry to dry out as you dont want to trap and seal water in*

vaughanmc
28-08-08, 11:00 PM
Aye, cheers for that pointer lol

No idea if I'll do it yet as mines isn't a show-car and would no doubt be dirty in about an hour

Benn

Winter wheel refurb.
Picked up a spare set of 5 turbo rims a while back to use as winter wheels.
After driving to combe and back i think its time to get them swaped over as they where minging after the drive.
So with the tyres off i started sanding them off..
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Wheel%20refurb/wheelrefurb4.jpg

This was the worse rims.

hi m8
just wonderin what was the process you used when you polished your wheels and how hard is it to do???

cheers

Benn
26-10-08, 03:38 PM
Get a wheel, paint strip it.
Start sanding whole wheel, 180grit, 320, 800, 1000, 1200. then polish on 2 different grades of buffing wheel with polishing soaps.
Hard to get a good finish, hand cause it takes hours.

Martin

Nick J
28-10-08, 09:04 PM
Benn, just an idea but........ how about going for the smoother handle/door look another way? My old shell had custom handles which basically were made by removing all the rubber cladding on the door handle itself and just leaving a small metal base, IIRC theres two tiny holes in the handle base you can weld up then fill, prime and paint etc, jobs a good one. Much easier than the audi handles and they look cool too. The handles when done in this way sit flush into the door and give a smoother look all round especially when looking from the front to rear or vice versa. I later sold them to Rob77 on here Im sure he had a for sale thread some time ago for them when he broke his car.You could search for pics etc as I dont have any unfortunatly. Or I remember you saying you had the mags with my old car in? Check the tv feature when the car was pink as Im sure theres a cheeky shot of the handles there. :)

Winter plans.

Gonna be removing my engine in the next few weeks.
Things to do.

I have an oil leak from around the oil pump some where. so find and fix that, clean block and paint.
Remove and clean inlet manifold, clean/polish/paint. Fit need bits i have been collecting.
Work out running ecotech pipe work.
Try and buy som silcon hose/made some.
Reroute water pipes so they are hidden abit more.

Gear box, am thinking about repainting my box as i have a light leak around the selector turret.
Strip, cleanand paint drive shafts.

Engine bay.

While the engines out, i'm going to...
Clean up and repaint the whole engine bay.
Remove wiper motor and try a ax with modded linkage.
Remove bonnet cable.
Weld up hole in fire wall thats not needed.
Remake all brakes lines and paint.
Maybe put battrey in boot.
Maybe add power streering.

Maybe buy and fit a let.

Think thats it.. but will change and update as i do/go.

Do you need to add a clar coat of laquare to stop them oxidising?

Well thought its about time i go a thread going on here too...
The full thread is on Mig, so please pop over and have a look fromthe start..
http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/projects-restorations/314761-my-novas-rebirth.html

Where do i start?
Well with the new bits i guess...New wheels...

So a few weeks ago i picked up my new wheels. Got the old tyres taken off as there where huge, then took them to this man.. (Craig and Mark at Hi-pol metal polishers 01329289966)

I wanted to do a test rim to see what finish i wanted on them..

Sanded.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/Image022.jpg

polishing starts (this was a quick 10 job to see the finish was like)
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/Image023.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/Image025.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/Image028.jpg

Now cause the rims come painted the casing isnt 100% on them getting a good polished finish can be hard and takes time.
There not fully 100% but i think there damn good. they do need a good clean.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/Image030.jpg

Now after leaving the wheel with him and letting him work his magic, i picked it up.. (again still needing a clean off)

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/turborim4.jpg

Now to do a trial fit...

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/turborim3.jpg

Tryed to get it tucked up like it will be when fitted..

Thats the good bit about the xe, but if you dont mess with a let they are fine..

See above, no the wheels havent been lacquared as that can be a prob later on. It you look at the pic you can see i have the painted wheels with the tyres on and the polished ones in there two...

Worst thing i ever did to my car was fit a turbo engine. Before it was fantastic to drive, no worry about problems or it blowing up. The i fitted the turbo and found myself always watching for smoke, listening for the death rattle and just generally a **** experience.

But was that a standard let? Or all ready tuned?
When reading the fourms peeps only have prob when the tune their lets..

With the price of a let it prob wont happen.

Sadly the bodyshop havent painted the skirts yet, but i'm in no rush for them.

Engines comming out at the weekend as i can use my work van, Manta wiper motor is at the postoffice now so i can play with that.

Gonna be spending the next month ding the engine bay.
My old boss isd gonna play the engine bay over crimbo. While i do a few gaskets on the engine, as i can afford a let at the mo. Got a load of bits for the engine to go. Thinking about a few crazy things too.. ;)

Got a bit more done, my frigging backs killing me now. Been having prob.. the metal in the nova bay is piss thin + now knowing what settings to have my welder = blowing holes like a mofo = a really angry Ben. Any way a few pics i've got done.

Got the loom out of the engine bay, along with clutch cable and bonnet cable.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Dec08bayrepairs4.jpg

Should i smooth it?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Dec08bayrepairs7.jpg

Found where my rads been leaking plus time i've got a bit of surface rust here, so started grinding it down to clean up and seal up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Dec08bayrepairs8.jpg

Left that to dry, so i pulled the m/s and servo off and cut all my shi*ey done brake lines.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/dec08morebaystuff9.jpg

Then got to sanding/flatting the rest of the bay ready for paint.

Benn so as Ive not read from the start, why did you decide to take the engine out and smooth more of the bay? an also any gen on the Corsa wiper set up,as Ive got no firewall and need an alternative, was going try the AX set up.

Scott

Benn
19-12-08, 01:43 PM
Egnine got a leak from around the oil pump that i've wanted to sort out for awhile so this was the perfect time.

Around march the bay had a quick blow over because when we fitted this engine we made a bit more cleanace for the alt, which put a small crack in the filler. So it was repaied and painted, but the paint wasnt very good and i wasnt happy with it.
So both of these two make it easiest to remove the engine, repair and paint the engine bay and change a few gaskets on the engine while it was out.
Plus i wanted to smooth more bits off and have less in there.

If you look at the Simps thread hes got the corsa set up fitted but needs to test it, which is what i'm waiting on. Gonna look at the manta set up i have here overthe weekend tho.

Got on to day and bit the bit thats been pissing me off.. The bonnet cable. What i thought would be easy wasnt, it just didnt want to pull the cable to open so i had to reroute it but its good cause its looks more tidy and runs better.

Been very lazy over crimbo, should have got alot more done but i have. So...
Got a corsa b wiper set up, and found its about 4mm to short to fit direct. So looking at others that can be a directer fit. Plans afoot.
So with no real wiper motor plan, i've welded over the holes..lol After using my welder and finding i was blowing holes i set out to practice a bit of some nice thin stuff first..

Not tobad,

Then the bolt ones and wiring hole. With a bit of weld thru primer to keep stuff at bay.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Jan09wiperbitsinbay8.jpg

Then on to the main bit. Got a plate cut... *Welded it in was happy pulled it off and trimmed it you'll see in some pics*
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Jan09wiperbitsinbay.jpg

Had to bend the top edge to fit the shape better.

Now this is where i've been having alot of probs, i've been finding that i can put a track on the plate, but it wont stick to the firewall.. so ive been tracking it on then its moved or fallen off whilest i've been getting ready for the next track, which has been pissing me off which is why i've left it fot a while. So played with the setting abit more and turned the power up to get better penetration,

Tack looks better, and you can see where i trimmed the plate down by the old tacks.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Jan09wiperbitsinbay10.jpg

Ground every thing off. Then had to do a bit of hammer work to get it abit more stright.

Just about happy i put a rough coat of black fiber glass over it..

Cheeky! As said been welding cars(mot patch welding) at the bodyshop for about 5years, but thats on and off and havent done it in all most a year..
I did look at that, i'd just like a std fit one, cause then if it brakes i can just get another one.

Those welds look very similar to the ones i often get using my 90amp clarke.
I think alot of it is down to the welder as In good clean metal I can get a very structural but average looking weld, when the metal is iffy its very hard to find a balance between blowing holes and just blobbing on the surface.

If I was to undertake anything more than the odd MoT repair or if i was to start another project needing alot of welding (which I probly well some day) i will invest in a new higher power welder.

Benn, set your gas to 6 on the reg, set the wire feed to about 6 or 7, and run a low power on thin sheet steel.

What I do to get a nice bead is go about 10mm foward then work 5mm backward (in a continues movement) then forwards again, back again etc

Adam
04-01-09, 05:20 PM
Ive got the same welder, i get decent welds even using it gasless.....
What settings were you using?
THe power settings go 1min,2min,1max,2max
In case you didnt know, not 1min,1max etc

Benn
04-01-09, 05:35 PM
Cheers Mike i'll have a go with that.

Right From the last pics up there ^ I sanded the fiber glass back, but found the bit i had welded in was still a bit warped so i have to tap it back abit. But in doing that i broke a few welds so i ground them back and rewelded them, this time getting them much better and stronger.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_4595.jpg

Refiberglass over the welds and then got it all sanded back.

Right got a bit more done. Finished all the welding off after getting some plate from the bodyshop.
Didnt do the bit on the slam pannel when it was first done cause i thought it was needed, but now knowing nothing that was on there was right it seamed pointless. The other two holes arnt needed and we couldnt have holes now could we..

So welded up the holes underneath..

Yes, is the best thing over welds. I'll copy and paste what i've told everyone else about it over msn.

Hope so, and well should be, with the engine out you can get in the bay to paint it, so the finish will be much better than you saw it at billing. Flatter and my shinyer.

Still awaiting to hear fromthe guy about the std legs when i can get them i can paint all the front arches again in hammeright and blow some up the chassis legs too. Then off to the bodyshop. Most P38's you can buy are quite flexi, it's down to how much hardner you put in, if it dry's too fast it can shrink and fall out! lol see this happen on carpentry aplications, or worse still not enough hardner and it wont cure fully! (ive done this, it's not good)

Benn
18-01-09, 09:02 PM

Shouldnt crack at all if done right. Remember that my engine bay is fully plated first, as its the only way to do it.

But it is just normal filler, with a flexi fiber glass underneath.

Benn, i've seen somewhere, where the filler is mixed with the fibreglass when wet to make it slightly flexible when dry, does this work?

Benn
18-01-09, 10:23 PM
Not really, makes it a bit strong and easier to sand.

Better to usde the black fimberglass i have, as its a flexible stuff they use on marine and things.

It adzorbs the movement when stuff explanes and such so normaly stops the filler from cracking.

Pics tomoz Jay.

After talking to Keith (owner of the bodyshop/my old boss) He said the best way to do my arches was to bare metal them, then re seal and paint them.
So i set about cleaning off all the paint and under seal and such with the wire brust on my drill..

Get the coilovers and hubs off first.. Std stuff ready to be fitted for the paint work.

Yeah i allways check the strengh of the bolts when i replace them.
I have a huge (its 4foot tall) tube of high strengh bolts that have a nickle like silvery finish on them too, that are all 8.8 and above. Came from my dads work from the submarine bit when they moved.. Think i send you bottom pully bolts from that lot..

Benn
27-01-09, 08:57 PM
Spent the last two nights in the wheels arches stripping off all the paint and under seal, to re seal and then paint them properly. Which is eating up alot of time, but i killed the wire bush so that out of the window for the mo.
So i've refitted the std shochs and bits so shes a roller again, and welded over the old wiring loom hole and made a new one. And make the holes a bit better for where they enter the bulk head.

Where the old hole was. Could be seen in the bay.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/holesmoothing4.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/holesmoothing5.jpg

Also cleaned up and enlarged the hole for the water pipe so this can have a proper gromit in it. You can see the new hole for where the wiring will enter the bay too, right up under the slam pannel.

But here they are all clean, sadly hiding under the inch deep seam sealer i found the corner of the battrey tray/under the turret had got wet so had rusted so i've cut it out and replaced it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Archprep6.jpg

Fixed. My weldings getting better but still not great on the thin stuff.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Archprep4.jpg

Eveythings been rusted with a rust killer/prohibater hence why its purple.

This is good to show how much seam sealer is sprayed over everything and how much is in the battrey tray/bulk head.
