Sat morning the roof was check then had a light skim of stopper over the welds as it was perfect. The the whole roof was high build primered.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8933.jpg

Spent this evening flatting the roof off. One thing i hated about working in the bodyshop was flatting off primer, its a hateful job and i really hate it. Did it all with a long block to make sure its ripple free.
All ready for paint now.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8954.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom2.jpg

Wanted to re wire my fuel pump for a while, as it was done quickly the first time and wasn't very neat at all.

Dan was able to find me some wire.. See "some" to be enough to do 2 Nova's.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom9.jpg

Nice and thick core.

Untidy and badly run,

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom12.jpg

Had 3 joins in too..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom13.jpg

Benn
03-05-10, 09:38 PM
No the plug wiring had been cut and joined from the guy before.. It was very badly done. It fell off the crimp when pushed out..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom15.jpg

Re soldered. So that the same gauge wiring does all the feed, so from plug run in to the fuse box (own fuse in spare hole) then to the pump.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom18.jpg

Way way better.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom19.jpg

So its been re routed to be much tidier,
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom12.jpg

Under side.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom21.jpg

As in pic above the ground was re made too, was in the chassis leg. But what better ground is there than the battery, as its almost right above the battery it was run to it.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom22.jpg

Much better and safer.

Now while the side trims is out, i've cleaned it fully with a good scrub and these looked very tidied..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom7.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Fuelpumpwiringloom6.jpg

To all nice and stained black... Mucho better.

Did you paint the car benn? + have you got a thread from when the car was still red.

Benn
04-05-10, 08:51 PM
Cheers Nick,

I my self didn't no, wouldn't be able to paint it my self as i want it perfect. So i know i wouldn't be happy with anything i can do. Even tho my paint work flat and polishes up ok.. I'd be too judgemental oh it on my car.. If that makes sense.

My Mig build thread as more.. Has the painting the first time. But i lost alot of the bodywork pics when my hdd died and photobucket had a fail.

First thread..

good work chap, does he blow it in? can you tell once its done?

Benn
04-05-10, 09:39 PM
What? Do you mean the roof?

Whole thing will be painted, back masked under the roof rails and blow/blended down the A pillars. You wont see a thing.

meant to say roof, i need to get some bits done and wondered whether a blow in shows or not, i've only ever got the entire shell done. most of the repairs i've seen show shade changes.

Benn do you have any clearance issues with the turbo wheels?

Ernie
05-05-10, 09:32 AM
Hi Benn
Dont mean to pick faults but the power feed for the fuel pump should go down the passenger side then through a small gromit in the boot strait to the pump.
Apart from that great work as normal..

You shouldn't see anything with a blow in, but being black will make it harder. I'd get the roof painted to be safe.

Cheers Craig.

Benn do you have any clearance issues with the turbo wheels?

Only cause i've made it low. Remember turbo rims are the same size as Speedlines.

Hi Benn

Apart from that great work as normal..

Why? You'd be running it right the way under the dash then.. My way it comes out of the fuse box and down the sill. The gromit under the seat pan is the only one that goes to under the car.. And it runs with the battery cable and stays away from the speaker wires too.

benn, gen me up on how you fitted your fans mate, ive just got the same ones in twin 9" but only came with the plastic clips as if you were to screw it into something, should there not be some sort of racket tie type fixing that feeds through the rad fins?

***EDIT! found the problem, extra fitting kit also required, would have been handy to have that on the advert! will struggle to get them in place for 1/4 mile action on sunday now!

ps. good work as always!

Benn
06-05-10, 08:52 PM
Mine push thru the holes on the fan, thru the rad. On the back you should have a square bit of plastic with a hole in it, that slides down the plastic finger thing.
Like a cable tie..

So woke up this morning.. Big stretch and tweak muscle between my shoulders hurt like hell. Great.

But cracked on. Roof was ready for a flatting off and polishing up, my garage door works well to show a reflection..

Gun finish.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Flattingandpolishing12.jpg

Started flatting it off.. Really didn't help my shoulders.. Small bits of dust comming out.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Flattingandpolishing14.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Flattingandpolishing19.jpg

Tested it with a buff but wasn't happy...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Flattingandpolishing114.jpg

Gave it a bit more sanding, then buffed.

Spoiler done..

Think that's flat..?

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/FlattingandpolishingtheRoof22.jpg

Isn't bad.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/FlattingandpolishingtheRoof210.jpg

On the inside where the rust was, i've used a zink etch primer, then hammeright over the top. This should seal it in tight.

Then pushed it out side, opened the boot.. Spending 15mins feeding the cables thru from car too hatch. Then moved on to fitting the sunroof, wasn't to bad getting it out by my self but refitting it with my shoulders hurting it was a funking nightmare and i could have broken down in tears.
But got it in.. Frigging yay!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/FlattingandpolishingtheRoof213.jpg

Tomoz i can spend the time getting the headlining (eek!) back in and clean the insides out as they are minging.

Good skills there Benn, fair play to you cracking on with doing it whilst in pain too, looks far far better now and verily shiny, comparison pics show the difference in it too, did you flat it all by hand as the sanding marks suggest you did, if so then epic well done:thumb:

1200 grit then 1500 grit finishing paper.

Cheers dude, and last time i used it on my back i couldn't feel the heat but it made me itch for about 2weeks.

Cheers dude, been doing the headlining to day so my shoulders funking kill now!

I flat it using a semi soft foam pad, to avoid any finger marks you can leave. But normally yes i do it by hand. You don't use your finger tips you use the flats of your hand is the trick...

As this was all roof work and as its low its the main bit you see, i did everything with a block. As i wanted it super straight.. Or as straight as it could be.

Spudly
09-05-10, 04:35 PM

1200 grit then 1500 grit finishing paper.

 You sooo need to give me a shout next time your flat and polishing. 2000 then 3000 wet/dry ftw! No wonder your shoulders are killing! 12/15 will do the job fine but 2/3k will cut your time with the machine in half mate and almost eliminate any chances of flatting marks showing up in the future due to the grade being so fine. ;)

Nick.

Benn
09-05-10, 06:34 PM
Nick, i've used 3000 before but only after 1500. This is how i've been taught to do it since working at the bodyshop. They 1200 everything.

Bit of buffing isn't that bad..

I compound up with G3 then i use 3M ultrafina over the top to remove any marks/hazing left. I'm then gonna Glaze tomoz using this..
http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/chemical-guys-ez-glaze-with-acrylic-shine-ii.php?cPath=66

Then get a few coats of Mirror glaze wax on.

Benn
09-05-10, 06:34 PM

But go there in the end.

Which trims?
Thank you.

Looks really smart that fella

Cheers dude.

The little things like re-trimming interior parts really makes it that much better!

You've got the bonus of making the car look safer with a darker interior rather than grey lol.

Top stuff :) What's next ha!

I like it cause everything thing matches this way and it all looks that bit nicer instead of bare plastic.

How is it safer?

Was talking to Keith about getting on with my doors after work, he said yes we can crack on this week.. :)
Pull the doors out and hold the handles.. Went over at lunch time, then again after work and the handles had been all welded in and where just about to get a skim of filler... Shocked big time. I thought i'd be doing most of it like normal but Paul the new guy dived in.
He's a very good panel beater and joiner and love doing this kinda thing. Having talked the day before he knew how i wanted them and having fitted some to a Saxo not so long ago he knew just how to do it..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Doorhandles2.jpg

This one (red) was the one that had been very very very badly welded in to a rusty sh*t door) The plate was cut down and hammered in to a better shape.

Keith has tho..lol

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Doorhandles8.jpg

One of the best bits is that the Audi handle works just like the Nova, so the bar that moves the lock from the handle just needed lightly bending and it works perfect.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Doorhandles6.jpg

Now i wanted to be sure the doors where rust free, so i've bared the bottoms off, finding a small dent. But no rust of anything.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/Doorhandles.jpg

All ready for primer tomoz.

Edd, Hopefully painted by the weekend so fitting next weekend i'd hope. The rear quarter where painted this time last year, but there wont be a colour/fade difference. Paint/colour wont fade that fast unless really badly looked after. Which mine isn't,

Benn, what fan have you used on your rad ? How did you mount it ? Using the mounts on the rad ?

I have the same rad and need to sort a fan.

Benn
25-05-10, 09:10 PM
I run 2x 7inch fans on the front, using the fitting kits they come with. The plastic legs you push thru the rad with a teethed grippy washer thing on the other side (if that makes sence)

Will you hgave it in the bay? Or hidden on the front? If its out of sigh then i'd use a mk4 astra AC fan, they are the best fans i've used. It will cool the rad from middle (95) down to in the blue with in 5sec (i had it on mine when it was xe powered) Best fan. Ad now uses one too after i told him too..lol

Edd
25-05-10, 09:19 PM

Where did you get your fans from ? Same place on eBay you got the rad from?

Benn
25-05-10, 09:26 PM
Do it, really cleans the bay up. Get a mk4 Astra fan, take off the outer trim and power block, you can cable tide it on and it will be the best fan ever!

Yes he sells them.. But i got mine for another site, where about £45 ish each.

Would like bigger ones, but i have no room with the IC.

What's the performance increase when going from standard to phase ?

The Simps
28-05-10, 12:11 PM
Most P2 sits between 250-280bhp depending on additional spec, quality of intercooler etc. You go from the standard 10psi to around 21psi overboost and man is it fun! Agree with Keith tho, best enjoyed on an F28. I used to love sitting at 80mph in 6th, on a runway, where its just about to hit boost, foot to the floor, overboost kicks in and before you know it you're 120mph+.

Nova_Tek
28-05-10, 12:23 PM
That's a fairly big increase. For the time being though I'd be mor than happy with standard power.

krobinson
28-05-10, 12:58 PM

It's best to run standard power for a while, helps you sort out any niggles, then once your 100% happy fit Phase 2.:thumb:

Nova_Tek
28-05-10, 02:01 PM
Thinking the same mate, even if I had intentions of going more power, I'd still run standard for a good while just to get used to the car and the way it'll drive, and also what you mentioned.

If I ever find the need to go more power then Ph. 2 sounds a good way to go about it, especially as it's done widely and all that's really needed is a good FMIC and a adjustable fuel pressure regulator IIRC.

you 'll need an uprated fuel pump, a healthy turbo, the phase 2 chips, uprated fuel pressure regulator or larger injectors ( we run saab reds on the vectra turbo), uprated actuator, decent grade spark plugs gapped correctly, fmic to help keep the acts low

overall a superb package that will be reliable and fast and will not cost the earth :)

Pics in a few, I didn't think when i mount my bench grinder, i put it to the far right. Which means i'm close to the shelving/wall. Which makes doing big stuff hard as i run out of room.

in that an inverted stud so to speak buddy ???

Benn
31-05-10, 03:10 PM
No, stud still comes up from the top mount, the nut was a bolt. That has been cut down to leave a shoulder that sits thru the brace. Has a M8 hole with thread taped up the insides.

Benn
31-05-10, 04:21 PM
I like the plastic the covers made from as it kinda matches the top hat cover...

Need a new air filter tho, really dont like that one. Want the afm tucked away as much as poss too.

If you look at pic of my bay Benn you'll see the afm is the other way up and the plug clips in underneath. Looks much neater that way and easily done.

Nova_Tek
31-05-10, 10:01 PM
Heres a question for you. Would the 1.2 oil filler cap fit a LET? Mines polished and it'll look better than the yellow thing they normally have.

Never thought of the brake fller cap, always thought the Nova one looked ok (as it's clear... well my one is)

Benn
31-05-10, 10:06 PM
Yes, all oil caps are the same in the Gm range. I take them off everything in the scrappy.

They are, but i don't have the wiring for it for a start.

So i got a few spares and popped off to the trimmers. Told him i wanted everything to match, what can back was this...

Std stuff, nice but could be a little more sexy. (The vent was left off as i knew it was comming off again)

Benn I think you've probably just set off a new trend for 2010 (png handstiched leather dashes/trim) I like ;)

For the strut nuts I wonder if you could get some chrome covers for them, similar to what's used on picture frame screws.

The top mounts aren't thick enough for a thread to be tapped in them, so i'd have to weld a nut on the under side, if i was gonna to that i'd weld in longer studs. Cheers for the info tho.

Oh and another thing... where's the new doors and handles?

;)

Benn
02-06-10, 10:22 PM
I re primered the door after work tonight, as i was fully happy with them. Found a small dent and ripple. Can flat that tomoz then be ready for paint, really wanna be able to refit them this weekend.

Bay wise, i hate the air filter, i want the afm tucked right down my the slam, with less air pipe. Leads are to long and messy, still missing two shiney rocker cover bolts (some one at billing slagged me off for that) Dont like that you can see the wipe motor either, but cant to anything about that as the cut out if for when the spindle turns.

Benn
03-06-10, 08:14 AM
I was cut and extended by about 2inch, i cant get the pass side to do a nice wipe tho and the drivers wipes the rubber (hence why its only the drivers on, to pass mot) But i have another here i'm gonna start at the weekend, the spindles need a bit more angel too, which wont be easy to get. I was mocked for my ott mount as well..

This is darcy, the one with the famous "rat look" unpainted kadett (Harvey)

Was a turbo, but the engine lives on in harvey.

The wheels and running gear went to mike squeek, the shell went to warrington.

The exhaust is on my project, and the clocks toolol

Cheers dude, will when they are right.

The body shop use PPG paint.

The other time i've had a prob is when the car was first painted it was a pre mixed large tin on paint, then we doing small panels i've done it from the scheme the bodyshop have, they didn't have a tinter (981 which is intense gold) But was told (by the place they supply the paint) i could use another tinter and it would be the same. It was ok, but wasn't quite right.. Most people would never notice, but i could see it. Now thy have the right tinter there's not prob.

look awsome benn as always great work

Thank you Sir. I do try.
