It seems you're not using any / enough gas when welding there Benn.

Gas will give you the penetration you want.

Yeah? There was very little gas in it, but my welding i just cant get any of the setting on it to work right, it just spits and done funk all. Dans welder (one that broke) welds really nicely and i can get a good beading going. Might have to buy a new cheapish one.

You're getting the right idea now mate - cut away metal and save on weight ;)

lol only bit really.. ?I've added so much weight too it..

Just wait until you put all that metal tube work back in to yours it will weight double lol

Looking good Benn, you gona pop over this week?

Cheers J, Yeah i'll comre over one night after work, i'll pull the the gear box out for you..

what rust treatment is that benn ?

Hammeright stuff, works well it kinda sizzles and bubbles. Wasn't as rust there but just wanted to mnake sure and kill any chance.

Hope you have as much fun with sump as I did today, fookin nasty job and you always spill some oil no matter what you do.

Benn
30-01-10, 10:59 PM
Yes, i got painted mixed by the place that supply the paint to the bodyshop so as they mixed the paint the did the whole car (and any other times its been painted) the match is perfect (its not cheap tho) With some soft masking you cant see it. Altho the lacquers not as shiney, but you'll hardly see it when the rads back in.

Its a hate full job, i try to use the jack to hole things in place so i have both hands free.. Sadly this will be the 3rd time doing it

30-01-10, 11:08 PM
I'm swapping sumps this time as i'm convinced its cracked as i've done everything perfect and still have a leak near the oil pump.

My XE leaks really bad as well but i'm not as bothered about that. Self changing oil system on the daily is fine.

Benn
30-01-10, 11:19 PM
I did see you said that in your thread, when i had the lump out i fitted it with a tiny bit of rtv, then it leaked a bit. So did it again in the car and put rtv all round. Now it leaks worse..lol

Gonna check how flat the sump is with my nice new steel rule.

Lee H
30-01-10, 11:33 PM
Its a pain in the ****, remember years ago just going to nip the bolts up a bit tighter to see if that cured it and snapped the corner right off a sump.

I'm using the ecotec gasket and from removing it today it looked to have sealed all round as it was totally dry on the mating faces so i'm baffled.

Benn
31-01-10, 12:04 AM
Snapping something is always a huge worry. Its a s*it job i agree.
See that's funny as i'm using the ecotec one too and it was dry most the way around too... Hate that its leaking tho, so one last time i'm gonna have a go..

Was very cold in the garage, so had to use my heat gun to warn the panel and the paint..lol

Popped the tie bars off too. And drained the nearly new oil out of the sump..

I found them on ebay, via some one on here.. Have changed all the plastic trim did the rear headrest convo the right way. Clean and conditioned it alot!
Now retrimming lots of bits to match the leather.

Dropped the down pipe. Got the sump off. Its been leaking at the top (gasket to block) Sumps been cleaned and i'll give it a re polish up.

Left it to dip dry for a while then i can clean the gasket up and get ready to re fit.

Benn i know you probably wont want to do this, but if there is still a leak you could do as i did, i just smeared red gasket sealant over the join of the block to gasket, and the join from gasket to sump, so now it's totally tight, no leaks.. It was a last desperate attempt to stop this slight leak, as it would of kept me from using it on track.

Its all apart now, As i've had the sump off before i've ordered a new gasket/baffle as a just in case. Last time it had rtv on the block to gasket join.
Jope fully this time it will be sorted.

Got a new sump gasket from Vauxhall and some of their Rtv sealant, sumps been re buffed as the oil had dulled it.

Been under there to day getting everything cleaned up and ready to do tomorrow.

Started doing a bit of re trimming around crimbo, but have only just got back to it...

This is what's going up the middle, its the same as the headlining so everything matches and the sound can still come thru.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8656.jpg

Doing the edges in a bit.. So will be much nether.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8657.jpg

Getting all the corning edges neat and smooth is *******. So its taking sometime..

to do the corners nicely you need to apply the glue 10 min before sticking it and heat the material with a hair dryer or hot air gun on a low setting.

Benn
07-02-10, 09:22 PM
So, Ben hates waiting for anything...lol

J its something pretty for me :)

Spent the morning getting the block clean with break cleaning, then doing the same on the sump.. Used a bead of Rtv on the block side. Got all the sump back up (was a ******* doing it in car as i knew and made my arms kill, but did it) Gave it a wipe off and have left it to set and dry for as long as poss.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8658.jpg

(Yes the know the level sensor looks poo, i wanna get a plate made up to replace it but haven't been able to yet)

Gave the down pipe a good clean off with break cleaner again, as it had got stained with oil from the leaking sump. Now the flange on my down pipe is a tiny bit warped from when it was made, it blows a very tiny bit (cant hear it that much, but you can see moisture bubble from the gap. So having already given it a light file, i gave it a little more then wiped a really fine layer of exhaust pasted on it then got it all bolted back up.
With the 3" down pipe getting to the bolts isn't that easy. So any one that's got one or thinking of getting one.. Get one of theses. Makes getting to the rear bolts much easier.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8661.jpg

Then moved to cleaning the under side of the cross member off, as i wanna use the under seal that's used in the arch's on it then repaint it. Gave it a wire brushing off.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8663.jpg

Then went to Dan and Sharon's and cleaned Sharon's Nova..

as said you need more sheilding gas and possibly more power to get the welds neater and with penetration.

This really is a superb build though, well done

Benn
07-02-10, 09:59 PM
Penetration seems ok as even small tacks are strong as, looking at parts to get a new lance on Dan's welder as it works nicer. Cheers for the tips.

Whats the under seal called that you have used on the inner wings Benn ?

Benn
07-02-10, 10:05 PM
Its a 3m rubberised sealant.

Is the best stuff going, its a 2pac sealant but its ment to be sprayed using a nozzle you have to buy. But this time as its a small bit i'm using a paint bush to put it on.

I'll get you a pic of the bag it comes in for a part number tomoz...

good progress.

on the upholstery side, deffo use a heat gun. we have a upholstery department at work, and they are always applying small amounts of heat and stretching the vinyl.

and your first pic of where you have stapled the corners. you should get it all stitched would look alot better IMO.
would also match the seats :)

Benn

I'll try the heat gun, cheers. Would love to the have two stitched together but its a cost, at the mo i paid for the martial and then its just my time.. But i do see your point, if when its done it looks sh*t then i'll get it re done with the center stitched in.

Yeah tis 2k, the bag has a join in the middle you pull open to mix it up. I did it in the dish with a paint brush, its ment to be sprayed yes. You have to buy the end you connect the airline too to spray it.
Yes your paint and bits surrpler should be able to get it, is about 15£ a bag. One bag did each inner arch on mine car. Its the best under sealant i've used and see, when its dry its rubbery, and you can paint straight over it...

Sorry fella...... Ive never been a fan of them and tbh I feel it ruins the cracking simple exterior look of your car. But as said Im biased as they arent my cup of tea. Cheers for the heads up on the sealer we use plenty of 3m gear so Im sure I'll be able to come by some. SharonSR

I like it (the car bar that is ) for 3 reasons

1) it's different
2) it saves your paint work and the front of the bonnet takes the most hits.(mines doing a 100 miles a day commute)

and 3) cos I've GOT one

Thank you Benn

only thing i will say though my friend has one on his lupo gti,
after a month he took it off and realised really tiny grit
had got underneath it and scratched his lacquer sheet loads
he managed to polish them out, but never put it back on
It was a tight fit, and was fitted correctly

It's been quite a while since i've read through this, the attention to detail is nothing short of amazing

Good read? lol Thank you very much i try.

Keep up the good work fella's!!

Will do!

Went to swap my turbo inlet last night, found moisture has been getting in and mixing with some oil that's sat in there..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/frontpanelandinlet7-1.jpg

All the breather/ic pipes are clear so i know its ok there, so guessing its getting in from where the silicone hose joins, but then surely i'd have have an air leak there?

James, see the small cut out where the air in hole is? On the turbo there's a lip that sits in there..

Ah ok i though it was that, i can have a look tomorrow at the others we have. I know you prob don't want to but is there any way you could file that into the new cover?

If not i can do it to another cover but it would be best to have the original one to make sure its the same

That white oil shizzle is more than likely caused by condensation IMO.

I would have thought so, just be careful you don't slip and put a track across the sealing face.

sounds likely :thumb: water vapour, i'm not sure of the exact mechanics of it but i'm gonna say gets squeezed out of compressed air, if you've ever drained off a compressor you'll know the effects of it :) I've seen about 10l of water come out of a big industrial size one before (it was sat on the pish and water collected in one end of it lol)

Adam

Oh yes i can remember draining the compressors every few days at my old work place, messy s**t! lol

11-02-10, 10:12 PM
The changing temperatures (weather) & warming & cooling of the engine will be the cause tbh.

Benn
11-02-10, 11:08 PM
Yeah i used to drain the compressor at the bodyshop was the same really, just wanted to check it was well not normal but nothing to worry about really..
Know why it was there and what it was....
Last time it was run was in the snow so...

Got up this morning, went out to the garage and put the heater on to get ready for some painting fun.

The sealant even tho i slaped it on good and thick was dry and rubbery so started with a coat of blue.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff6.jpg

Well a few coats, let the dry then Gave it some lacquer, had to leave the garage as i was getting a little high..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff15.jpg

MMMMmmm much better. Brush marks arn't as visable to the eye.

With that was drying, i set up tidying up the loom and bits. Was it untidy and just pushed down.
So the fuel tank vent valve was bolted here (std placing)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff10.jpg

Moved it to here, so it will be hidden under the top hat cover..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff11.jpg

Cabled tided the tb cable up too. Made the routing more tidy, which we like.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff12.jpg

Next i moved on to the untidy loom, this is at the end of the let loom. Reverse plug, 1st gear boost, coil plug and hallafect sensor clug.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff16.jpg

Reverse light plug cut off, wiring cut back capped over and run back in to the loom.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff18.jpg

1st gear boost switch, plug cut off, wiring cut back the soldered together then pulled back in to the box that sits on the injectors for tidy ness.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff17.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff20.jpg

Did some trimming and wrapping (gonna heat shrink them when i can get it out, made the garage to tidy to get stuff)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff24.jpg

So now it looks like this, well it be a bit more tidy..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff25.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/stuff.jpg

Then made this up for dan to blank off the EGR valve on his mk4, looks like it worked too :)

I assume to make it fit past the slam panel better...?

As Adam said, the std inlet makes the angle all wrong and mean you have to hack the slam panel up, which i think looks utter sh*t. Cutting and welding it means the air tube sits nicely under the slam.

Are they going to be able to tig that little wedge?

Yeah, just like normal welding, he should be able to tack it either side, peel the tape off then weld it all around. Just means on the back side there will be two lines of weld.

Graeme
18-02-10, 10:01 PM
Oh right, had me a little worried about the inlet I've had done, it does look a little different to Keiths but more like the chemical metal'd one you had previously

Benn
18-02-10, 10:24 PM
Yeah, different to Keith's and different to my old one, i wanted to afm and air tube to be out of the way as much as i could. So i push it pulled it and tucked it as much as i could. Then worked it out from there.

Benn
18-02-10, 10:26 PM
Looking at it Gra, Keith sits about where mine does.

When its fitted the angle looks totally different as the whole inlet sits pissed.

So with that done it can go back on, the the pipes then the rad and water pipes. Cut a bit of stainless tube for the water system. And run the thing up.

Next, i bought these last week and they turned up today..

Not to happy as they turned up in a bag, saying they'd been re packed by DHL, think the hose is damaged on the back cause of this...

Fiat Coupe turbo disks have totally the wrong offset. The wilwood disks sit much further in towards the suspension.

Fitted the new turbo water on, fit is utter sh*te if i have it sitting how it should the pipe sticks up and over the slam panel, is to long. Any one else's the same?

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8760.jpg

Filled it with oil to see if the sump leaked and left it over night..

Started early this morning..

Made a new water pipe bit, nice stainless. Polished it up, but wasn't happy to sanded it off again today.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8750.jpg

Buffed up.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8763.jpg

Pushed the car out side for the first time in almost 2months so i could rinse the heat matrix thru, with that done i could finish piping up the water system.

Got the IC back in and all pipped back up.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8770.jpg

Looks alot more tidy with the new silicone on, but some how i've deleted the pics of it with the air tubing off.. :(
Best i have..

All piped up and filled with water and new Blue (matches the car) antifreeze. Yes i know the water feed pipe isn't right but its worse pointing up.
Bay needs a really good clean, polished rad on show.. ;)

Fans back on with new fittings.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y232/bennh2/Updates%20Oct09%20on/IMG_8767.jpg

Took it for a test drive, everything was ok. Give it some to test out the boost as i had fitted the new actuator.. No boost.. Oh what have i done?
Get back.. The nut must have not been tighten as it had come off the end of the bar so the gate was just opening, with a nice new stainless nut on it was fine.. Oddly.

Here Dan helped me (thanks) just driving my car to the meet, i cant see what i do and don't like till the car is moving you see. So i jumped in with Sharon (thanks) and took a few pics..

I dropped some bits off to be re trimmed this week, gonna have to give them the parcel shelf as i can get the center right. So its gonna have to be stitched together rather than just glued. Found a guy that can chrome steel and its just road the road. So i'll be dropping him some bits this week.

Need to look at my sump and work a way to stop it dripping, as its only doing it a little but its enough to funk me off.

Looking sexy Benn, you know I love your car!. Just a quick questing about the rad and the fans.

I take it that rad is a standard GTE/GSi sized one? What size are those slimline fans? I'm wondering if I should go for a single large fan or two smaller like yourself.

Mixed feelings about the bra, I can see the benefits but from some angles it's touch and go whether it suits. Maybe if the two flaps up top weren't there it'd look tidier, but they're probably there for a reason.

The rad is thicker than the normal Gsi one but only by a few mm (say 5ish)
I run two 7inch fans, because i want them on the front for the cleaner look.
You could run i'd think a 8 or 9inch fan on the back, plus one on the front if you where worried. Depending on where the ic fits and all that.

As i've said, i'm still two minds on the bra, the flat work as wind brakes to hold it down and tight to the bonnet.

IIRC they're weights.

As above, and mk2 Astra.

Funked off at the mo, as my sump is leaking. Fresh oil is around the seal/gasket. No clue what to do with it.. Might try beading/wiping a layer around the out sides of it to seal the layers up..

Tried to fit the discs that came with my 4pots. They don't fit at all. Hubs are too big, center bore is too big. C**ts. Now what the funk do i do?

novaguy08

I know that this will sound daft Benn but when I used sealant last time (admittedly it was silicone Bathroom sealant) I was told to use a wet lollypop stick to push it down and smooth it out as it was drying.

Perhaps doing this with yours it would push some sealant into the leak rather than skimming the top.

Either that or sump off again :(

Best thing you can do is just clean both surfaces, and use a new 8v gasket.

If it still leaks, then join the rest of us LET owners, it's hard to come across a LET owner who doesnt have some form of Leak!

When i had the engine on the stand, i used the ecotec gasket from my work (Fai one) it leaked, so did it again in the car with the same gasket with some Rtv sealant. Still leaked got a Gm Ecotec gasket and Rtv, did it and its leaking all the way around..

Prob is its clean fresh oil, the just comming out, so its not like its ever hard for it to get out...
