Looking awesome there dude, some quality mincing, but erm its gonna run a bit lumpy with the cambelt routed the way it is in the last pic lol

Adam
17-10-10, 12:40 PM
Looking well, nice and clean.
BUT i see no alternator fitted!?
Thats a fcuker of a job with the engine in!

BUT i see no alternator fitted!?
Thats a fcuker of a job with the engine in!

Maybe I have a clever plan with the alternator ;)

Or maybe I just forgot and it's gonna be a right pain now lol:cry:

Still, happy the main work is now over and it'll be much easier to do "bits and bobs" in the evenings. Thanks for all your nice comments.

Iain
17-10-10, 12:56 PM
Single crewed or do I spy a helper?

That's my pro engine fitting father lol He did a good job actually, no paint was removed in the process

Paul
17-10-10, 12:57 PM
Is this not built yet? :wtf: lol

scott.parker
17-10-10, 12:58 PM
SBD/or jap small alt on order then to save hassle??? lol

Iain
17-10-10, 12:59 PM
Sounds good, what parts/alternator do I need for that?

oooof, serious proper sex wee, engine looks the tits in there lionel.

Iain
23-10-10, 12:52 PM
Screw that Scott I'll stick to the standard alt lol Been tinkering with small bits not worth taking photos of in the week, but have sorted my shfiter out now, just need a new linkage pin from the scrappers.

Chopped the end off my mockup shifter, the one I'm using is a nice white colour:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/109.JPG

Straight bit of internal shifter and the end of the Nova one so it fits the linkage OK:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/110.JPG

While I'm there figured I'd fit my fancy new nylon gearknob (Quaife?), so off with the plastic bit on top:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/111.JPG

And ran an M10 tap down it:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/112.JPG

Welded up the shifter end:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/113.JPG

Quick lick of silver paint on the rod and bolted in place:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/114.JPG

Cleaned and repainted my rosejointed linkage:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/115.JPG

Bought myself a sexy battery tray too:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/116.JPG

Which will be bolted in here, central and nice and low down, and helps put a bit of weight in the back:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/117.JPG

Connor
23-10-10, 01:06 PM
Battery needs a clean ;) lol

Benn
23-10-10, 01:10 PM
Shifter work looks greats dude. The rose joints on the linkage look sloppy tho.. Guess they dont feel it.

peester
23-10-10, 01:24 PM
iain im quite clued-up on the small alternator thing; pm me if you want any info - i did it for under £90.
Shifter looks nice; hope it'll do the job for you

Iain
23-10-10, 01:27 PM
What's wrong with the linkage? I've had it in when I was mocking the shifter up and it feels AWESOME, the whole setup feels really good.

Cheers Peester, I might put it on my list of future things-to-do, I should really be focussing on getting up and running with standard parts. :)

peester
23-10-10, 02:04 PM
ok cool..
the linkage - ill just say sit in a non-running car it might seemingly fire through the gears ok enough, but out there heat-of-the-moment and that.. you might find it different..
I did anyway,
But it should only be a matter of adjustment.

may I suggest moving the battery to the NSR corner of the boot (not in well), for optimum weight distribution...?

scott.parker
24-10-10, 10:31 AM
may I suggest moving the battery to the NSR corner of the boot (not in well), for optimum weight distribution...?

I did think this but was not going to mention it, i did it with mine as it was located in the well, so i moved it, also means i can if need be carry a spare wheel..

24-10-10, 11:01 AM
Tucked away behind the passenger seat would my choice.

Iain
24-10-10, 11:29 AM
Thanks for the suggestion Olly, I've been discussing the topic with Nova Ian actually who has all your old kit and is putting it in the same place as you did. As I saw it, behind the rear wheels isn't the optimum place for it anyway, so figured low down and as far forward as possible would be best - i.e. in the spare wheel well. Depends if the offset weight benefits outweigh the having it lower down?

Mike there's yet more rollcage in the way of putting it behind the passenger seat lol

Mike
24-10-10, 11:33 AM
Mike there's yet more rollcage in the way of putting it behind the passenger seat lol

Doh lol its gonna have to be the rear then for you (ooh err) Ive just checked in the Corsa & with the pass seat in its gonna be mega tight to fit a battery behind for me aswell :S

scott.parker
24-10-10, 11:45 AM
Well what i think Olly is saying is that if your in the car driver only, then the bit of weight in the nearside rear will help to even out the drivers weight on the offside front, OK my battery is not the same wight as me, but you get the gist, if it was on the offside rear all the weight would be on one side etc.

Scott

Iain
24-10-10, 12:03 PM
Yeah I get the offset weight distribution/offset thing, but the lower the weight is the better also, which was my logic with the wheel well.

scott.parker
24-10-10, 12:05 PM
I best go to my mums and relocate mine to the underside floor then! lol

Humm, actually could i do that, as it's a sealed dry cell....??

Mike
24-10-10, 12:09 PM
What ampage is your battery Scott, ive been vaguley looking at Varley & Odessey batterys as ill be wanting one soon.

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Motorsport/Brands/Varley/Varley_Electrical_Components/Varley_Batteries/Varley_Red_Top_30_Battery/1447/106/0/14535

It goes like so RED top 15 = 13ah 30 = 25ah 40 = 35ah, so mines a 25 amp

lol read the spec sheet of cars mine sometimes fitted to!

Scott

Mike
24-10-10, 12:19 PM
Nice one, 9.5kg, so about 4kg lighter then my GM lead plated battery lol but more importantly, smaller!

scott.parker
24-10-10, 12:23 PM
looking in them spec sheets the one i would buy is a 25 as it's lighter still, and is capable without being overkill, i only bought mine as it was dam cheep 2nd hand, Ive never charged it in 4 years of owning it, and it's so much balls the car firers first time after sitting for months on end (obviously with the battery cut off in the off position)

It does feel heavy, but is way lighter then crap standard battery's, possibly the best thing i bought for the car to be fair.

Look on euro rally that where i got it off.

Scott

Mike
24-10-10, 12:29 PM
Yea I saw one on eurorallye a few weeks back for £75 but some one else nabbed it before me lol

Ill be able to get my hands on one elsewhere, or may have to suffer Tweeks price, bit of a discount with a "Pitstop" card but not really much :(

scott.parker
24-10-10, 12:43 PM
keep your eye on eurorallye, and ebay mate, think mine was £80 posted, i wouldn't paid £150 as that mad..

Seen this thought of you! lol

Iain

Just finished off the rear brake lines for the drums. Thought splitting it on the beam would be a good idea to avoid an additional hole in the floor and join in the line, although not sure if I did the right thing doing this or not.

Didn't account for having to P-clip the lines to the beam cos they flapped a bit, a few 5mm holes along the beam hopefully won't hurt it?!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/118.JPG

Goes to the car via one line, this is with the beam at full droop:

Bias valve mounted next to the handbrake and plumbed in to the rear line:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/120.JPG

And p-clipped out of the way of the harness and seat:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/121.JPG

Also p-clipped out of the way of my feet, managed to use two of the shifter bolts to avoid drilling unnecessary holes in the tunnel:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/122.JPG

Also tried a 306 rear wiper arm on for size and it's far too small, can someone measure their "proper" single wiper (Storm?) for me?

weldy weldy.... ill measure mine when i get back if you like - i just used the citroen arm shortened by a couple of inches - and a corsa blade (cause I had some new ones kicking about)

cars looking mint :thumb:

chrisnovaturbo
26-10-10, 04:43 PM
you can buy mine if you want £12 posted? for arm and blade

Iain

Looking well!

Benn
26-10-10, 10:33 PM
Good work dude, coming on fast.

The eyelets for the harnesses, they arnt just screwed in to a hole are they? As the floor plate metal isn't very thick...

Brake lines look great.

scott.parker
26-10-10, 10:37 PM
Good work dude, coming on fast.

Brake lines look great.

You get spreader plates with them as a kit mate, they go under the car floor, some have the nut welded to them too..

Looks good mate, as for the wiper blade i would use a AX/ZX arm and then use a 18-19" flat blade as there the best to use IMO as at any speed over 70-80mph normal ones on single wiper set up will lift off during the sweep..

Scott

Benn
26-10-10, 10:41 PM
Ah cool cool, i know you can buy just eyelets so...

2nd the AX arm, very straight. I think i still have one if you want it..

Iain
27-10-10, 09:04 AM
Get some pics Benn :) I mocked up the standard Nova wiper with the longer blade from the 306 rear arm and it looked spot on though, so might just keep that (at least it parks a little lower down).

Yeah in the tunnel there's a large spreaderplate welded across the whole area to beef it up, and then the proper spreaders with welded nuts underneath that, so should be safe enough

Engine loom in (ignore engine sitting wonky doing something else atm):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/124.JPG

Routed the loom back on itself and behind the inlet manifold:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/125.JPG

And through the old servo hole. Also extended the multiplug in to the car to connect to my car loom:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/126.JPG

On a quest to find some sort of dashboard, I decided to hack up a standard one to see how far off it was from fitting:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/127.JPG

Weight saving (also makes it easier to chop up):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/128.JPG

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/129.JPG

Chopped the ends off, extended the hole for the column, and it fits:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/130.JPG

Issue is the dash is wonky (shows how much my column has moved):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/131.JPG

So I could leave it there (and have the revcounter right in front of me, which is a bonus) or I can shift this over and make up a new plastic bit to fill the gap:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/132.JPG

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

peester
30-10-10, 07:55 PM
sorry but, why has the column moved..? quick rack? mounts?

scott.parker
30-10-10, 07:59 PM
Sod it bin the dash, go for a custom binnacle like Dar's one, and a switch/fuels bord panel etc.

scott.parker
30-10-10, 07:59 PM
sorry but, why has the column moved..? quick rack? mounts?

Corsa epas

peester
30-10-10, 08:02 PM
ah see.. im not a fan of dar-like custom dashes all odd bits n bobs.. but thats me..
but also not sure how youll sort this one out..
maybe replacing some of that metal re-inforcment, but bent slightly might curve the dash a bit..?

Iain
30-10-10, 08:14 PM
The column is on a custom bracket that allows me to fine tune it's direction and height, and moved over to the right in an attempt to straighten it up, using the Corsa double-joint and EPAS setup.

Wasn't going to have a dashboard, but I just want something simple and easy to slot in so I can mount my killswitch and secondary fusebox to so I can start wiring stuff in properly.

scott.parker
30-10-10, 08:19 PM
If thats the case, you can loose the glove box part, and the light switch locater can be ditch, meaning you can moved it all more to the right and then relocate the light switch in one of the heater holes??

Scott

Iain
30-10-10, 08:27 PM
Scott you've just given me a genius idea lol Cut the headlight switch surround in half, so it doesn't hang over the end of the dash, then use the removed section to fill the gap left on the left!

nova ian
30-10-10, 08:52 PM
Looking good Iain, not as good as the professionally pressed bearings in the freshly painted hubs! There my favourite! Lol

Dash looks better than I thought with the ends chopped, and didn't know that skeleton framework comes out, that's cool as it won't weigh to much at all really.

Good skills iain

Iain
30-10-10, 08:57 PM
Yeah the exposed ends don't look horrendous, and it shows off the triangulation which is nice.

Without the skeleton it's literally less than a kilo, mentally light lol Needs some bracing putting back in though as it does sag down unfortunately. Just removed it to make it easier to hack bits out of, to remove it there's about 20 rivets that need drilling off.

Paul
30-10-10, 09:14 PM
Keep the glovebox.

scott.parker
30-10-10, 09:52 PM
Keep the glovebox.

lol wtf for??

As for strength, just put some ply layers of fiber glass over the parts you wish to stiffen up?

Paul
30-10-10, 10:02 PM
To put stuff in when on a trackday/ spirited drive.

Trust me on this one! Wallet, keys, drink, fags, phone, lighter, sat nav etc etc

scott.parker
30-10-10, 10:06 PM
I would agree if he was building a track day orientated car, but i think he's already gone past that point, it looks like unless Iain re-instates the frame work he wont have the option for one, i just use a man bag! lol

Iain
13-11-10, 05:07 PM
Took Olly's/Scott's advice (despite arguing against it lol) and mounted the battery on the passenger side. The more I thought about it the more it made sense, and I get to keep spare for a spare wheel in there if I ever need one

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/133.JPG

Mmm, nice alloy tray:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/134.JPG

On to the front suspension now, got my topmounts fitted for more caster, thanks to machining it down slightly:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/135.JPG

Marked on the bottom so I can keep track and set the other side up the same:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/136.JPG

Dug out my suspension:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/137.JPG

Fitted up, the tiebar bracket lowering looks a bit crude but should work:

And tomorrow task, sort out my new extra-long starter motor wiring so I'm in a position to turn the engine over:

Nice mate, good to see youve got the "be arsed" factor and are getting on with it lol

Benn
13-11-10, 08:56 PM
Looking great dude, where did you get the tie bar mounts from?

burgo
13-11-10, 11:47 PM
finished this year then?

Iain
14-11-10, 10:13 AM
Yeah Adam, try and do something on it most evenings but the dark and cold limits what you can do really.

Been tiebar mounts are from ProTec Motorsport, they seem pretty nicely made.

Burgo yeah maybe, depends if the engine runs ok lol

Edd
14-11-10, 10:34 AM
looks awesome !!!

didnt fancy painting the gearbox then ?

The Simps
14-11-10, 11:12 AM
Good work mate. Looking like a track slag now!

Iain
14-11-10, 12:47 PM
Not really fussed on painting the parts that won't rust really, and unless you do a top job I think it looks worse when they get scratched and chipped etc.

Paul
14-11-10, 01:03 PM
Im in a state of shock here. It has 4 wheels on it? Nice work Iain, does look very clean, wait til you run it through a gravel trap though!

Not long now eh!

Adam
14-11-10, 01:28 PM
wait til you run it through a gravel trap though!

LMAO
Speaking from experience you never get all the gravel out the chassis, my white nova had gravel stuck in the underside chassis legs since i hit the gravel at Donny, i never got rid of it lol

AlexW
14-11-10, 01:38 PM
Everybody rips iain the same lol, Crashing/Gravel and the fact its on four wheels.

Iain
14-11-10, 05:09 PM
Pfft gravel trap doesn't scare me lol

Set the running ride height today (dropped there rear an inch or two as it was wayyyyy too high):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/145.JPG

Front is still a little high but it can't go much lower due to travel issues, boo:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/146.JPG

Rear looks nice though, and at this height there's still an inch of clearance all the way around the tyre:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/147.JPG

Bulkhead wiring sorted, all engine-loom related stuff and the starter motor wire has been taken through the big grommet, and the car-side (alt, sensors etc) has it's own hole next to it to make it easier should I ever need to remove the wiring loom:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/148.JPG

Should look tidy when it's all taped up:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/149.JPG

Made myself a little blank to sit on top of the original grille here to try and stop water gathering in the Corsa servo:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/150.JPG

Shouldn't be too noticeable from the outside really:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/151.JPG

Whipped the rocker cover off:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/152.JPG

And filled it all up with oil all over the cams, unfortunately I've ran out of oil before it was registering on the dipstick, otherwise I was going to try and turn the engine over on the starter:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/153.JPG

Adam
14-11-10, 05:18 PM
Loving how everythings so mint and fresh

What travel issues at the front???

Iain
14-11-10, 05:24 PM
Just don't think it can go much lower as there's probably 1.5 inches of travel before the bumpstop, not sure how much it'll need though. It's sitting level and low enough anyway.

peester
14-11-10, 05:41 PM
yeah your not going to really know suspension setup until its up and running out there

nova ian
14-11-10, 05:43 PM
Nice one Iain, really is coming along now :)

What's the problem upfront then, has the piston gone into the shock body much already then?

One thing I will say though is I think the bumpers ruin the look of the car so far. Not saying you need a gsi bumper or that, just the faded grey looks ****e against the spankingness of the rest of the car, they just need a lick of paint in my opinion.

Can't wait to see it running though mate

Iain
14-11-10, 05:47 PM
Cheers. The bumpers are untreated at the moment but in fairly good condition so I'll attack them with an array of products and heat gun to darken them up.

Yeah the spring is wound down so there's not a huge amount of travel left in the shock piston, it's not really a problem TBH I just won't be getting "show car" level lowering lol

Adam
14-11-10, 05:50 PM
Oh are those the bumpers you are keeping on Iain?
If so, i agree with Ian's comment.

Its miles too clean and fresh to have those 20year old faded bumpers on!

EDIT-Posted before reading above reply lol

burgo
14-11-10, 05:50 PM
iain have you actually stripped them down to find out how much piston travel there actually is. i know that spax rsx bump stops are about an inch and half bigger than they need to be. thats how i was able to run so low on them because i chopped the bump stops

AlexW
14-11-10, 05:51 PM
Told you, get short bodied, If you can get the front lower while keeping the rear a little higher its going to give you a bit more front end grip due to weight transfer?

Adam
14-11-10, 05:51 PM
I dont run bumpstops on my front AVO's

Mieran
14-11-10, 05:52 PM
I've tried most methods and 'back to black' products, they are useless.

Get some of this:

Keep up the good work mate, you'll get it done in time for April easy..

Few odd pics from what I've done this weekend, nothing that exciting to report although I've had the engine cranking over on the starter motor till the oil light went out so should be ready for starting when it's wired up and fuel lines are made.

Chilly conditions to be working outside but its gotta be done:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/154.JPG

First off I whipped off my coilovers to see if I could cut down the bumpstops. Bumpstop is 45mm tall, the shock bottoms out about 3cm further than the bumpstop so probably would have been able to remove 2cm...

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/155.JPG

Except one of the pistons has somehow got damaged underneath the bumpstop! No idea how, but I wasn't happy with this passing through the seal so they're back on as they were now :(

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/156.JPG

Next up, this had somehow broken which meant the clocks were only half working:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/157.JPG

Carefully I dabbed some solder to it, then tinned a wire and joined it to the circuit, job jobbed:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/158.JPG

Rest of the wiring MESS I need to attend to:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/159.JPG

To make all my "aftermarket" things nice and neat I'll be installing this secondary fusebox:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/160.JPG

Next up, dug my Ashley 4-2-1- exhaust manifold out and modified it to clear thethermostat housing. Shaved off the markings on the stat housing too so it would go on straight:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/161.JPG

Looks chunky!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/162.JPG

Route past the sump looks ok too, doesn't hang too low.

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/163.JPG

I did plan to weld in a lambda boss with the idea it could be used for AFR tools etc at a later date, but the manifold join is straight after the shaft so I can't see anywhere suitable for it.

brucer
28-11-10, 06:35 PM
excellent work as usual.

how bad is the damage to the shock? could you not emery tape it untill its quite smooth?

Iain
28-11-10, 06:37 PM
Not sure what has happened to the shock, it's very rough to the touch and looks like the shiny stuff has many chipped or flaked off?

If I ever need lower in the future I'll get some new shorter bodied coilovers, meh.

Sorry not really dude only the one's in the thread, it clears everything fine there, as mine now has a lambda sensor in it as the grub screw got lost at a garage when it was mot'd last, and the lambda don't touch nothing.

Thats what I was looking at Chimp, but trying to find the best place for it. It needs to be between 10 and 2 according to Innovate instructions (i.e.not horizontal or pointing down) and anywhere behind the shaft is no-go as thats where the centre pipe join is.

Cheers Scott, if you happen to be under there any time soon snap a shot of exactly where it sits. :)

Engine loom is now connected to the fusebox, I need to lay my fuel pump wires and fit a relay to provide switched live feeds from the +ve:

Not too bad Ian, got my "ignition live" relay in to feed all my extra goodies and ordered myself a new air horn to wire in lol Once I get a coil and a bit more done it may be ready for starting.

Yes Adam, it's meant for fuel. £1.23 a metre isn't too bad either.

Iain
12-12-10, 04:47 PM
Might ditch that plastic fuel hose and just run rubber to the front, reduces the number of connections and will probably make it easier to route too

On with the exhaust lambda boss, marked out on the manifold:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/171.JPG

22mm hole:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/172.JPG

That houses this snugly:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/173.JPG

Will sit here, hopefully out of the way of the tiebar and driveshaft:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/174.JPG

I'd have welded it in but the boss is faulty, so they're sending me a new one:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/175.JPG

Next up something niggly that was stopping me from mounting the dashboard properly, I had chopped the passenger side one of these out in a crazy weight saving spree:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/176.JPG

So one hole and rivnut later:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/177.JPG

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/178.JPG

I now have one again, removable too

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/179.JPG

Dug out my radiator and fitted that up, cos I don't think I could do it with the manifold in place:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/180.JPG

Slimline fan ready to be mounted on the front, when I get a fitting kit:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/181.JPG

And continuing with the cooling system, dug this out, just need to find a way to secure it in position as I've screwed myself over and boxed it out where the old latch was!

I hope you aint using that old coolant tank lol

L-shaped bracket and bolt it to the turret?

Iain
12-12-10, 05:06 PM
Tank will be cleaned up, just took the first one I found to chop up and work out what needs modding. Didn't want to drill the box section as it may let water in and rust from the inside, might make up a bracket to meet the wing hole.

Ended up cranking it forever yesterday and the oil pressure light wasn't going out. Also forgot to disable the injectors so during that time it was firing fuel in, grrrr. How long does it usually take for a 'new engine' to get oil pressure?

After that the battery died so I left this and armed with some high strength loctite:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/202.JPG

I put my studs in. Fronts are 48mm exposed length:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/203.JPG

And rears are 38mm exposed length. Had to be careful on the rears to stop winding them in at the right point otherwise it would force the flat section down and screw up the threads in the drum:

Iain
31-12-10, 12:31 PM
I'm thinking it hasn't built up oil pressure before, I may have got confused. Just had it going for another minute and it's not doing it again. I might try a different set of clocks just in case, seeing as these ones are fairly knackered since the oil pressure gauge fiasco.

As I'm feeling a bit fed up with the motor, I trial fitted my new wheels as a bit of a pick-me-up, just need to decide colour.

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/205.JPG

Nut only just fits on the rear studs, maybe I should have gone for the longer one so I can use spacers if required...

Spud - With a new build, Its a very good idea to pump oil around the engine before starting it, Once its had that once its fine to fire up. Most cars wont get oil pressure until they have been running for a second or two, so you wouldnt normally see the light go out before its started.

AlexW

Well the only way to know its got oil in the right places is to wait for the light to go out :P And you dont want to start it and run it with no oil anywhere.

Spudly
01-01-11, 03:03 PM
So in which case id probably not quite fill the sump up to the max and say bung half a litre down it just before cranking for the first time, that way you know you have oil going down the galleries as its being cranked:p

Its probably not that simple but makes sense in my little head lol

Actually every oil channel in the engine can be blocked and that'd only make the light go out quicker, only way to find out it has oil in the right places is to look.

Also, just start the thing lol Oil lights are set miles too high anyway, only has any meaning at all if it comes on at high RPM and stays on, which can also be noticed by the characteristic bang lol

If you're that worried that it's gone back together wrong take the cam cover off, if it's covered in oil start it.

Meaning you have plenty of oil in the drain galleries but none in the bearings where it counts, tbh though that's what assembly lube is for.

Hmm interesting Spudly, not sure why your light didn't go out.

I found this post on MIG which looked quite interesting, talking about some sort of air lock in the pump:
http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/engines-transmission/370565-how-prime-c20xe-oil-pump.html#post3771605

So I attached some spare plastic fuel pipe to my oil can:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/207.JPG

Whipped the bolt out:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/208.JPG

Stuck it up there and pumped some oil in. Then cranked it by hand a few times and repeated the process until oil was dribbling out of the hole:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/209.JPG

Cranked it on the starter and the oil light went out after about 20 seconds, result! And here's a video of the first ever start-up:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIKNqDWcPls

Oil has reached the top end now anyway, its nice and oily when you look down the filler cap hole. I just need to plumb in the cooling system and replace a leaky fuel hose (feed to fuel rail) and I can run it up to temperature.

Carriers, calipers and braided brake lines connected up, standard (rusty lol) discs and Mintex 1144 pads in ATE 256mm calipers:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/210.JPG

Armed with my shiny new +10bhp exhaust rubbers:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/211.JPG

I started fitting the exhaust:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/212.JPG

But it's never going to fit as this kink (to avoid the shifter) hits the tunnel, d'oh! Looks like I'll have to chop it up after all, might fit an extra box to quieten it down and straighten it up:

You look like a proper charver in that vid you little hoodie:p

I think you meant 'irrelevant' mr Alex and although i didnt leave it turning over for a minute it was a fair while, was always told not to leave a car turning over on the starter too long anyways as it can damage the start solenoid and other such stuffs, but i see what you mean as it should in theory gradually build up enough pressure to put the light out after a while!

AlexW
02-01-11, 04:22 PM

Spud, your cranking speed would be miles lower than Lion's due to him having no engine compression, lack of spark plugs,Lol.
So would be less likely for your light to go out when cranking.

Got given a 'cheat sheet' from Autosprint regarding first starts, it says to run it at fast idle (2000rpm) for 10 minutes while checking for leaks, then drop the oil and filter. So plan was to get exhaust modified and fitted, fill up the cooling system and follow this procedure. Then it can be driven to an MOT giving it some load etc to bed the rings in.

Depends who you "believe"

A LOT of people just go for the put it under load and plenty of over-run (vacuum to pull the rings into the cylinder walls) method.

Being a bit too "pansy" with it can cause early wear

As you say it depends who you listen to, Most engine builders say to "bed it in" how your going to use it, Something that is a Must on tractors!

I've always done the warm it up under little load, then load it right up and done no engine braking.

I wouldn't suggest leaving it idling but with Iains build its a bit of a pain if not.

See i followed the 50miles and really low rpm, then 250 at under 4k sh*te way, the engine was a bag of utter crap (badly built anyway and not by me)

Think next time i'll try and 10min and 2k then power on way next time..

Well here's some pics of what I've been up to recently.

Got the right XE coolant pipe to suit the silicone hoses. For anyone fitting Roose XE silicone hose kit, THIS is the pipe you need (not the one that has one on the back and one on the side):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/214.JPG

Finding a 28k Nova in the scrappy meant I got myself an almost-new header tank, I'm sure you'll all be pleased judging by the uproar from the dirty header tank pic lol

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/215.JPG

Cooling system in the bay finished:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/216.JPG

T-piece is a messy bodge IMO, not too keen on it, but it'll do for now:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/217.JPG

Here's how I'm mounting the header tank as I boxed over the original screw hole. Cut down the tab and used a rivnut, pro job lol

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/218.JPG

Nova Ian sold me some dodgy goods (OK so they were free but still dodgy lol), fuel line was leaking and the gaffa tape wasn't up to the job of fixing it:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/219.JPG

So whipped these bad boys out of an Ecotec at the scrappy and fitted some barbed 8mm joiners:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/220.JPG

Extended to the right length, now has fuel clamps on the joiners too btw:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/221.JPG

Fitted up:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/222.JPG

And joined to my 8mm ID plastic lines under the car:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/223.JPG

Iain
15-01-11, 05:35 PM
On to the killswitch, earthed one side of the '1' using the supplied resistor:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/224.JPG

And looped a +ve back to the other side of the '1'. Not going to bother with the '2' side I don't think, as this will currently immobilise the ECU and cut spark (I think?):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/225.JPG

Next job was sort the wiper linkage, it was sitting too 'vertical' which meant the wiper sat at an angle and scraped the tabs on the side against the screen. Not good.

Smashed the linkage with a hammer (literally) to get it to sit a bit better:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/226.JPG

This corner is right up at the scuttle now:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/227.JPG

Straight wiper arm and 18" GM blade:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/228.JPG

Wiper arm is actually a Citroen ZX straight arm, shortened with a Nova end welded on:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/229.JPG

Sits at a better angle now and causes me no problems:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/230.JPG

Brap brap, looks terrible but it'll do:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/231.JPG

Next up, redoing things I thought were sorted. I bought cheap balljoints and track rod ends from my local motor factors (£5 each or there abouts). Black and orange box, made by 'CD' I think, I will never buy these parts again!

Well the car hasn't moved an inch and look at the state of these boots! Bottom balljoint:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/232.JPG

Track rod end:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/233.JPG

Iain
15-01-11, 05:37 PM
So I'm replacing them with better quality (I hope) QH parts. New bottom balljoints:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/234.JPG

And TRE's already fitted, QH ones again:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/235.JPG

And what I'm working on at the moment, a cut down heater matrix:

Weird how them joint boots have rotted so badly! shows how cheep they are though..

As for the T section the only other way to make it neater is to get it as close to the rad outlet as possible and keep the jubilee clips turn underneath out of sight, but I'm afraid theres not many other ways to do it, as you need the feed to the inlet manifold, i don't think its wise to block it of like some do IMO.

But that aside mate, nice update and its coming on well now..

But surly mate if there was no need for the water system to flow through the inlet then GM would not of made it too, and the SBD inlet has it too, so i fitted it into it.

I know it's mental ain't it. They're the feeds for the starter, car loom, engine loom and a few aftermarket relays...

Sorry they're normal insulated crimp terminals but with heatshrink over the top :( (Except the battery and starter motor wires which are non-insulated but still crimped).

Meh its not the end of the world re. the t-piece, it's in now just think it could be neater.
