Car looks good dude, hows the saab anti roll bar ive just ordered one of these also?Yeah seems alright! I'm waiting for a dry day to do back to back session tests with no arb, astra one and the saab one to check the difference though! Been raining since I fitted it but it hasn't made it tail happy in the wet
Well, this car is still being worked on and improved.
The engine has gradually been burning more and more oil. The bullet was my mate saying actual pieces of oil were hitting his windscreen behind me. Suspicion was stem seals so off comes the head:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/570.JPG
Definite signs of oil burning:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/571.JPG
16 Elring stem seals fitted, and a bit of valve lapping while there:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/572.JPG
ARP head studs so I felt like there was a point to yet another engine strip down:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/573.JPG
Fitting them. SBD instructions say you need 5mm spacers on a late head which is 74mm deep. With the provided washer it's pretty close to the end of the threads, so I fitted the ARP washer, OE washer and ARP nut to ensure I was in the middle of the thread:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/574.JPG
Done, never to be seen again:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/575.JPG
Test drive seems pretty good, it definitely smells less so fingers crossed.
Bit of preventitive maintenance for once, Wilwood caliper rebuild.
Technique was get a piece of wood and pressurise the caliper with an airline to get the pistons out most of the way:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/576.JPG
Seals pretty good, pistons very bad. Caught it in time.
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/577.JPG
New pistons from RallyDesign are a way nicer design - cast then machined OD. Look way better made than the old ones:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/578.JPG
8 new seals and pistons fitted, bolted back on and bled with Motul 660 fluid.
Also rocking a single carbon kevlar Cobeau now:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/579.JPG
Car weighs in at 820kg with over 20L of fuel.
Trackdays are running again so booked onto Mallory at August.
my mate
You have friends??

Nice update. Hopefully the engine can stay together now until the end of the season!
Loving a bit of carbon/kevlar  Was gutted to have to sell the corb rev ones I had, but just don't fit with the red tunnel:(

I bullied him into getting it, along with removing his passenger seat for added race car ed ness.
I'm playing with this bumper idea, I'm 50/50 whether to carry on or scrap it.
Proper ropey, basically scrap GSi bumper
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/580.JPG
The edges were cut off for wheel clearance, which just looked terrible once fitted:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/581.JPG
I was torn between a few ideas, but the top is basically the same between povo and GSi, so I thought I'd try making a GSi "Alpina style bolt on valance" from it:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/582.JPG
This is it bolted to a spare povo mk2 bumper which is pretty much cut away to just be the upper part and sides:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/583.JPG
Quite happy with the fit into the existing swage line:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/584.JPG
Not 100% sure on the lip it's left here, but I guess that was inevitable:

So I’m assuming you don’t need the end trimmed for wheel clearance any more then?
On a related note, when you’re adding in castor on your setup, how much movement forward in the arch can you get? Are you bottom arms on rj’s to allow it to angle?
Hey Simps,
We're both running the fully adjustable front wishbones, with RJ's on the bottom arm and on the tie rod.
Iain will have some better pictures than me but I can get some if you're interested to see.

The reason for asking is that for mine car I’ll be running full rj’d nissan arms etc and ideally would like to add quite a bit of caster and potentially move the wheel forward in the arch.
I was more curious as to roughly how much the wheel could be moved forward - 10mm? 20mm? And whether you find it eats rj’d because of the angle they are under??

Ah ok mate, I've never actually looked at how far it's moved the wheel forward over standard, I'll ask Ben and see what he says, I know that I've not used a set of RJ's in 3 years of them being on the car.
I think our limiting factor is driveshaft angle, bumper clearance and not RJ angle. I'm about to get mine 4 wheel aligned and I'm get 5 degrees of caster and get some photos of the RJ angle.

That would be cool, thanks.
I need to start thinking about setting my position in the arch and building the arches soon, so trying to get it all figured out!

Course mate, I'll see what we can sort out for you

I never trimmed it to begin with, my wheel has taken out a section of my current bumper from rubbing but nowhere near enough to warrant that sort of trimming!

As House says, RJs are perfectly happy where they are. Shaft angles seem pretty happy too as we've gained castor both on the topmount and the tie rod. Limiting factors seem to be bodywork, although I recall my mate's mk2 Astra the shaft rubbed a hole in the oil cooler sandwich plate so watch out there too.

Great info, thank you! I can see the wheel is well forward in the arch.
With mine being rwd I don’t have shaft issues. I’ve set my engine & therefore subframe quite far back which means so does the suspension. I’d done this “assuming” I could centralise the wheel again with castor.
Is the rear arb you have fitted come from ebay?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182032468899
And have you attached it with clamps?

Duh, RWD project, of course no shaft issues! Haha. I guess the concern is you end up with too much caster to put the wheel in the middle of the arch.

Yeah that looks like the one. It's the same fitment as a mk2 Astra ARB. I've welded some captive nuts in box section along where it was reqiuired to bolt at either end, no support required in the middle

As Iain says my only worry would be too much castor, I've run 4 degrees and the thing steers itself and corrects itself when you loose the rear (bonus)
Not sure how much would be too much!!
I don't think we use much past 5 degrees but again that's due to space constraints.
Be interesting to see how this works out.

Stock Nissan S14s (what I'm running) have c6-7deg castor as stock I believe. Like you said - will be interesting to see where I can end up!

Would love a proper rear ARB for my Nova without the need for all the modification & and the price of a H&R item

Which Cav is the ARB from?
I always thought they had to be modded to fit, never new they were direct with some choice clamps!
I think it's a mk3?? I think some people modified the end brackets, drilled, welded etc, but yes that's the original end clamp+bush, half clipped over the edge and secured with a small bolt.
It's copyrighted though, so you owe me if you do it too.

mk3 really? If I'd had known I'd have removed the rear arb from a 2.0 hatch I scrapped a few years back.
If I see a cheap one I'll nab it :thumb:
Few tweaks, now I'm running one seat I've removed the footrest and remounted the battery on the floor:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/586.JPG
I also made a helmet/steering wheel hook from some ally bar:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/587.JPG
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/588.JPG
The GSi "frankenbumper" is complete, I'm kinda digging it. The prep and paint finish on the extension is horrible after having to attack the whole thing with a DA and various powertools, god knows what it was painted with but it reacted with everything. But "trackcar".
Old paint be gone:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/589.JPG
There were several cracks along the bottom of this bumper from a hard life, I removed the ally rivetted plates and used a plastic stapler instead which does a pretty good job of repairing the crack but staying flexible:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/590.JPG
Quick mock up, should work....
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/591.JPG
Povo mk2 with some small modifications to take the extension:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/592.JPG
The bumper is attached by 4 self tapping torx screws on either side, and neatly cable ties to the original attachments of the povo bumper at the bottom:

Finished (bar removal for a repaint when I can be bothered):

So is it really the same as a gsi bumper now? i.e. it's not deeper or anything like that?
Why didnt you use the whole gsi bumper?
Fancy!

Basically the same shape on the outside, except it steps out a little more after the swuage line and it's got a bit more material around the toweye. Could have been an option to drop it down to make it deeper but there'd have been another join line.
Why didnt you use the whole gsi bumper?
Hi sausage. I only did this cos someone had cut the wing lips off an original GSi bumper and it looked terrible, otherwise ther'es literally no point. In hindsight I could have probably added some edges on with way less effort and used the whole thing complete - oh well.

Mallory spat an awful lot of gearbox oil out the breather, turns out I've got an aftermarket turret gasket which is missing the baffle plate.
Topran part number 206568 gets you a nice metal reinforced OE spec turret gasket.

Last session and my gear linkage was getting really sloppy too. Kept hitting 3rd instead of 5th. Here you can see the standard pin that holds the nylon of the linkage to the selector has worn from the movement:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/598.JPG
Even with a new one there was still too much slop, so the long term solution is an M6 bolt, 8mm OD alloy tube gently sanded to be a snug fit into the gear linkage nylon. When you tighten the nut and bolt it clamps the sleeve tight (like a crush tube), leaving absolutely zero play.
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/599.JPG
Good tip, I'll remember this for mine........oh never mind!!
Buying a sequential was plan B, thankfully I managed to fix the gear linkage slop.

I had problem with the cable turret, there is the breather about 50mm deeper, so need a longer hose to avoid.

Anyone in this little trackday-related project I've been working on?
Borrowing Houses Vbox was great and I was loving the video overlay with speed, GPS track location. But I couldn't justify £310 for a proper vbox, despite them being a great piece of kit.
Here's my solution, Raspberry Pi Zero, 10z GPS hat (with accelerometer, gyposcope etc, but not using that atm), running some custom code I've written. It essentially dumps GPS location data every 0.1 seconds to an SD card file which I can use in Race Render to overlay speed, track location and G-force (calculated from GPS data).
Pi + GPS hat:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/PiGPS/1.JPG
Broke out the breadboard to mock up the wiring; LEDs and operational buttons.
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/PiGPS/2.JPG
Once that was working it was all soldered to fit in the small case:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/PiGPS/3.JPG
Finished product including external antenna (antenna plug on rear of device) and external power bank.
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/PiGPS/4.JPG
In short; You power it off the powerbank, press a button on the side to start/stop recording and various LEDs show power, GPS fix and recording status. It dumps raw NMEA GPS data to the SD card which Race Render supports for video overlaying.

Took it to Blyton Park 30/08/2020, great day, lots of fun. Had a few issues including a coilover platform winding itself down but all easily resolved.
Brakes weren't very strong, so put some new F4R pads in on the day. During bedding them in I got a bit excited:

Resulting in me smacking a cone, cracking my new front bumper and ripping a side skirt off going sideways over the gravel:

Fantastic day and glad I was able to adjust your brake bias incorrectly, luckily found before you ventured on circuit, full rear bias wound have been fun. There certainly was some fast stuff there but the ikle Nova held it's own and fought off and beat some mighty machinery. I really enjoyed my spannering time for Team Shonky, go Team Shonky go. Might dig my Astra out next year as I need to find my mojo for track day driving as it's been lost in the post for a while now :(

Epic day out at Cadwell at the weekend. Forecast looked bad and I didn't have my usual buddies with me with gazebos so £22 later and I have a "tarp tent" from the local camping shop to attempt to keep dry.
Shonky car, shonky tent:

Few issues... Loading up on the trailer to take it and the clutch cable snapped where it goes through the bulkhead. Fair enough, it's been on years and was an original GM one. New aftermarket one fitted and I thought nothing of it.
Straight after lunch my clutch pedal hit the floor and didn't come back up. Oh great, new cables gone I thought. Turns out the clutch arm had snapped:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/605.JPG
50/50 whether to pack it in, our rallying friend Paul suggested an epic bodge which got me through the whole afternoon. 7mm spanner, bent to meet the shape of the arm, 2 nuts+bolts and 2 jubilees later we have this:

Just bought myself a set as well. Gas Golds, although mine are the ultra lows.

Sweet, they're nice aren't they. I asked for ultra lows to get more travel at a lower ride height than the GHA. Although mine and Houses ride height is identical (measured from centre of wheel to top of wing) so either there's no such thing as ultra low or we both have them.
Definitely wouldn't want them any shorter than they currently are, as my previous GHA ride height has become my max height on the Golds!

Hit Blyton Park on 12th June to test out this new suspension. Car performed great all day despite some serious hammering.
There was a slight mishap where I forgot to refit the oil cap and lost a litre of oil all over the engine bay, but a little mop up and top up saw that right.

Hitting them kerbs hard Iain. Looks like it is going well. [emoji106]

Cheers - think I hit them a little too hard cos my steering wheel is now off centre haha.
I did have another small mishap, smacked a cone, which ripped off my skirt fin and the rear wheel ate a hole in it as I merrily carried on my way. I'd laugh if it wasn't for the price of skirts nowa days!

Next level weight saving right there!
I like your tie down straps
Struggling with updates, but still been working on it. Quite a lot in fact.
The heater matrix blew, so I've had to replace that. Played with a few options, aftermarket matrix, changing the blower setup, but nothing stuck so no point in showing pics yet. Still using a cut down original blower housing with Nova 3 speed fan on the bottom of the matrix, connected to the mk2 dash screen vent.
I've had the dash out and tidied a tonne of wiring, integrating the aftermarket stuff with the OEM fusebox and relays. No pics as, well, its wiring, and boring.
Also done Snetterton on 20th Sept. Good day, wet and mixed conditions.

My heater matrix blew the other week, sprayed boiling coolant all up my leg. Just swapped it out for a new one in the end.
Cars looking really good out on track, thanks for the video.

You should turbo this mate. Be well fast

Same, soaked foot, limped it home steaming up and coughing!
I'll put up some pics of the matrix solution I'm running. Ultimately I don't have a fresh air feed which would help with demisting.
I never updated this... Did Donington 25th Oct 2021. Was a good day.

Car survived with only one mishap; the plastic connector between the gearstick and shifting rod snapped clean off. Thankfully it happened at the end of the day.
And some video footage of chasing the Hangar 30 (Ben) Nova around (attempting to keep up!)

Very nice mate, can't wait till i can do the same in mine! That hanger 30 nova is a bloody rocket!
It is, ignoring the fact it's a 1600! Haha
Bit of work on the Nova before Donny; new wheel bearings after several years of abuse (Audi80 bearings FTW) and a short shifter.
Big block hub goodness

Pressing them in with my trusty vice

Original RJ linkage (top) developed a bit of slop and tightness in places, so taken the one out of House's old red Nova (bottom) and rebuilt it. It uses expensive 'studded' rosejoints which allow for loads of misaslignment.

A marshall strugglged to spot my tow eye deep inside the GSi style bumper at Snetterton, so I've extended the original tow hook with this lovely item. Try and miss it now!

Excellent.
I thought the 2 of you had exclusive hire of the circuit at the beginning!

I built mine in 2012 using a local machine shop. I think I fit bearings approx once every 4 years which given the amount of trackdays on various semi and previously full slick tyres is pretty impressive.

It is, he's great to chase out on track!
Excellent.

The day was awful to be honest; so many people not moving over and getting in the way. Me and Ben would come in fuming haha. Thankfully we got some clear circuit towards the afternoon!
Update covering most of 2022, Nova's taken a bit of a backseat!
I found the pull cables were shot, which is obviously bad news from a safety perspective!
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/623.JPG
New cables and seals to attempt to stop water ingress:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/624.JPG
Cadwell in March was interesting, never done a trackday in snow before!
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/625.JPG
Mallory in May was much nicer:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/626.JPG
Finally sorted my sideskirt damage with thanks to Craig for the part. I did paint it a Hycote grey but it's far too light:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/627.JPG
So ended up buying some more UPOL mid grey (expensive for a can!) and repainted and refitted both spats with proper plastic poppers rather than mushroom bolts that rusted and rounded off upon removal!

Big upgrade, the Tranx I had fitted has lost some preload so requires a rebuild. Good opportunity to upgrade to a Gripper. They are a truly fantastic company to deal with.
Stripped it down and it's like new inside, started rebuilding to regain the preload to factory specs but soon got bored and sent it off to Gripper to finish the work:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/631.JPG
Back from Gripper, pressed on some new bearings, races and seals:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/632.JPG
The body is larger than a standard/ATB/Tranx diff (it doesn't allow for a speedo ring either) which meant some light casing modifications were required by removing the speedo drive mount and shortening the speedo drive into a blank:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/633.JPG
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/634.JPG
All fitted up, test driven and works beautifully:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/635.JPG
Finally, an upgrade to the tow rig was in order so acquired House's old Transit, she's a good old bus:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/636.JPG
Grippers are a super sexy Diff.
Are you bothering with a speed readout? if so how are you going about it
Not only is the product great but they're so helpful on the phone. Would rather talk you through servicing your own than send it in.
Already on a Stack dash with their wheel speed sensor pointing to a CV ABS ring so didn't actually need the original box one.
Heads off, lets sort the overrun burning once and for all. It's with Cylinder Head Developments for a refurb including new guides.
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2b/637.JPG
You can see signs of headgasket failure and oil ingress marks from the guides here so was about due anyway:

You deffo putting petrol in this and not diesel?
I noticed other day autosprint are doing bronze guides dirt cheap
Sent from my Pixel 6 using Tapatalk
Looked into bronze and others, my guy recommended standard guides for standard valves so that's what it'll be getting. I'm watering the petrol down, it's too expensive nowa days.
Head back, new guides, refresh, valve lap, etc.

Bored of engines now.
Hey Iain, how is the car going ? Did you do any trackdays this year ?
Hey mate actually loads of updates since I last updated this. New engine, mapped, and a couple of 2024 trackdays. I'll find some time to write it up here!
