yeah was gonna say - theyre crimps not solder.. solder tends to be a bit brittle..
You want a twin ported header for the t-piece situation. I also have a similar t-piece bodge on my return; but ive got a twin port header now so sorting that out soon myself.

Mazz

Sorry they're normal insulated crimp terminals but with heatshrink over the top :(
Grrrr

Well in that case i'm gonna have to -rep you to balance out the +rep i gave out...

Im not a fan of any fuel pipes being joined in the engine bay to be honest. Other than that good work.

Iain
15-01-11, 07:27 PM
Too late Mazz mu ha ha

Paul all the standard Nova lines join in the bay don't they? TBH these barbed connectors are awesome, I can pull on them with my entire bodyweight and they won't pull come off (and thats with no clamps on!)

Paul

I always have fuel lines made up that join under the car to the hard pipes.

But surly mate if there was no need for the water system to flow through the inlet then GM would not of made it too, and the SBD inlet has it too, so i fitted it into it.

Scott
I agree entirely mate, its there for a reason.
But ive never had it t'eed on mine, and my engine doesnt really see many "quiet" days, well back in the day when it was actually used lol

And ive had no issues about it

Good work, Keep the water outlet from the inlet manifold as its ment to be there. Fuel lines look good.

On with my heater matrix assembly. Cable tie through the fins keeps the matrix in the housing:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/237.JPG

Handily uses the 2 threads already there to keep it on (although one of these sheared off today so hoping it can stay up on just one bolt...)

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/238.JPG

Drivers side hits inlet manifold as expected:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/239.JPG

So chopped a bit off:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/240.JPG

Hoses connect up fine and doesn't look like it'll rub on the manifold too bad:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/241.JPG

Hmm need a blower here...

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/242.JPG

Ah ha! Got an idea. Take one scrap Nova and chopy chopy:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/243.JPG

Shape, flatten, weld, paint and we get this:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/244.JPG

Wahey a small self contained matrix/3 speed fan weighing 2.8kg (dry):

Nice black dash:

If I'm being honest I got the idea from Baxter's attempt, remember him saying he had issues mounting the blower tho. Hopefully with some nice ducting it'll clear the screen and use the centre vents for myself.

dont blow enought, the matrix is that tight, it just ends up blowing back thru the fan and stalling it

Iain if your not using solid mounts you might want to cut more off the matrix pipe, or grind the nib off the inlet.

Benn also benefit of using the standard one is I get to retain the standard switch and 3 speed settings :)

Scott/Kevster it's on TAS solid mounts, I think it has cleared enough not to cause problems - the pipe may touch the manifold but it shouldn't crush the pipe in to the matrix solid pipe. If it does look close I can undo the matrix bolts and pull it out slightly too :)

Just keep your eye on it once its running as you might get some rubbing from the inlet onto the pipe from any movement etc, but if the mounts are solid you might be OK, just mu old car did that! :thumb:

Well I got some abuse from my old air horn setup (page 1):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/014.JPG

Figured I'd go for a little more discreet this time although this bad boy is supposedly 139dB!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/250.JPG

Mounted up my strut brace temporarily:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/251.JPG

And got the horn mounted on a tab welded to it:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/252.JPG

Looks quite discreet in the bay so I'm happy with that. Just the wiring left now (using a relay provided in the kit cos it draws more power than a standard one):

Good work bud, looks neat in there as you say.

Iain
22-01-11, 06:26 PM
Finished wiring up the horn, it's plenty loud enough for such a small little unit lol

Made a bit of a crap discovery day, the doors were either not painted on the bottom edge or (more likely) placed down on something hard, leaving exposed metal. Both are suffering from surface rust along the bottom edge, not what you want on Nova doors that are prone to it anyway! :(

Was planning on fitting the heater blower and finishing the cooling system but I failed to get one from the scrappy so I ploughed on with the exhaust (was fun to chop something up after the terrible day so far!)

Silencer ready to replace the kink:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/254.JPG

Nice and shiny but will be painting it black to fit the rest of the system:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/255.JPG

18" silencer body:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/256.JPG

And 3" left on either side (standard is 2" but asked for the extra length to fully replace the kink:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/257.JPG

And what I've ended up with at the end of the day, just tacked in to place at the moment but if tomorrow's mockup looks good I'll weld it up proper and hopefully fit it:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/258.JPG

Got some Stainless Steel 308LSi wire for the job so hopefully get some good welds on it

Welds weren't that pretty, blew a few holes where I may have worked the ends a little too thin, but meh it's on:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/259.JPG

Welds cleaned up and whole lot painted in VHT paint:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/260.JPG

Fancied trying a silicone-based sealer for the system joins, opposed to exhaust sealers that dry and go brittle. Picked up some Loctite 5920 with a high temperature resistance (275C continuous):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/261.JPG

Fitted it up - took about 3 attempts and a lot of hammer action to get it fitting well. Kept hitting the fuel tank rear edge etc. But it's on, stealth tailpipe:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/262.JPG

And total of 3 boxes so hopefully should be quite quiet:

Well put my heater matrix in Friday night, and tightened up a jubilee so tight it creased the pipe in on itself. Wouldn't go back to being a circle:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/264.JPG

So picked up a new matrix from the scrappy from a 28k miler, bonus is I got this little bracket with it so I no longer need the cable tie:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/265.JPG

And fitted it, in fact I managed to fit it a little further back and so no matrix pipe mods were needed and I retained the flared ends! And the hose doesn't even touch the manifold, bonus:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/266.JPG

Locked the hub in position with a screwdriver and done up my front hub nuts before I forget:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/267.JPG

Yeah I know not very interesting but I wanted some advice on the circlip, does this look OK? The hub nuts are a little different to usual types:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/268.JPG

Iain
30-01-11, 05:39 PM
On to today, I wanted to get my engine up to temperature. Cooling system filled with some GM coolant (ooh posh lol) I fitted up a temporary air filter:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/269.JPG

Plan was to time the ignition up too but didn't get this done:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/270.JPG

First start went badly. Running lumpy as hell and cylinders 3 and 4 were filled with fuel so potentially no spark there. Plug from #3:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/271.JPG

And plug from #2, hmm:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/272.JPG

Well I bolted the spark plugs back in and reconnected the leads and it ran like a charm, so maybe just the HT leads were loose.

Sat on fast idle for a bit:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/273.JPG

I noticed a leak from a cylinder block core plug right behind the exhaust manifold, blah. Ignored it for a bit, revved it to about 3000rpm and this happened lol

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/274.JPG

So that ended that lol Trying to fit my fancy silicone hose but its very tight between the belt cover (well, the pulley itself) and the turret:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/275.JPG

nova ian
30-01-11, 09:14 PM
Car looks good Iain, as said earlier glad you sorted the poor running issue. I wouldn't worry to much about the leak, at least you know where yours is coming from!! Lol

Going to be fun when were out on track as you say :)

Paul
30-01-11, 11:22 PM
Iain, the best way to do the matrix, seeing as you already have it out, is to cut the pipe further back, and put the hose on so it joins in the car, ill get you a pic:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/264.jpg

Good progress though!

Iain
31-01-11, 08:16 AM
Cheers for the tip Paul, I did try that initially but I wasn't happy with the coolant pipe going through the bulkhead with no grommet (was a tight fit).

The above pic with 3mm odd clearance is with a new matrix and unmodified pipes (achieved by mounting the matrix further back in the cabin) so I'm happy I can retain the flared ends to help stop the pipes coming off. :)

scott.parker
31-01-11, 06:05 PM
Dude the matrix pipes wont come off, there not under any real massive pressure etc, if i was you i would do it how Paul's said, as I'm sure you will still get enough movement to cause rubbing with it how it is now.

As for the induction pipe, I'm afraid thats how they are, if you if a brace it gets squashed in between the cover and turret, so unless you go TB's carb its something you'll live with.

Scott

Iain
31-01-11, 07:11 PM
I'll have to go ITBs then lol I'll leave the matrix for now tbh I feel like I'm making too much backwards progress at the mo :( Will keep an eye on it

By hacksawing off the RH mount lug and the original fan mount bracket I was able to wriggle the rad free via the front:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/276.JPG

Sigh looking less complete again:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/277.JPG

Having an issue removing the core plug, the bottom is pushing in and not rotating so the top isn't coming out, any suggestions? I might attack it with a dremel on the edge to relieve the pressure?

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/278.JPG

31-01-11, 07:16 PM
It should eventually turn iain or if you can get something between the top edge of the plug and the block and tap it down to make it turn.

Iain
31-01-11, 07:18 PM
Doesn't look like there's a gap between the top edge and the block, reckon just keep going at the bottom? Little worried it'll end up stuck in the waterway!

Damo
31-01-11, 07:22 PM
Doesn't look like there's a gap between the top edge and the block, reckon just keep going at the bottom? Little worried it'll end up stuck in the waterway!

Just keep tapping it mate at the bottom its too thick to drop down or get stuck if you dremel it you may end up with swarf in the waterway which may block up a water jacket.

Benn
31-01-11, 08:32 PM
Hammer a screw driving down the edge or in the middle, then you have a lip to pull on and have remove the strength it holds. You'll be able to pull it free then.

Find a sockut that fits in the core plug nice and tight and gently tap it back in.

Hub nut is a normal looking nut and is fine where it and how the split pin is.

When the engine moves you might find the inlet will touch the matrix hose, so do like Paul has shown, mines the same as that too.

Count Vaux Alot
31-01-11, 09:03 PM
Coarse thread self tapping screw hammered into core plug centre to start it then screw it in a little, then remove with claw hammer/pri bar or the like.

Iain
31-01-11, 09:04 PM
Will give it a go, have prised 1/4 of the edge from the block so hopefully less holding it in now. Will drop the exh manifold off tomorrow for more room too.

Iain
01-02-11, 05:49 PM
Got the exhaust manifold out the way:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/279.JPG

Didn't want to separate it from the rest of the system as I spent almost a whole day sealing it up and getting it sitting right so just dropped it off the rubbers:

Yeah I made a bit of a mess of it lol

06-02-11, 05:27 PM
cool stuff..
the rad fan; you say it doesnt kick in (come on) but then say it '(turned it off when it got to 3/4 on the gauge)'

so it does come on, but doesnt cool the engine then switches off..?

Iain
06-02-11, 05:31 PM
No I turned the engine off myself when it hit 3/4 on the gauge. The fan doesn't come on at all (unless I bridge the rad sensor plug in which case it does) - but it's a new sensor so am ruling that out.

Adam
06-02-11, 05:31 PM
Does the fan come on if you bridge the switch wires?

Edit-Thats a yes then. So either the switch is faulty, or theres an air lock or something so that part of the rad isnt getting warm.

Only two small leaks, both from the metric-imperial male-male bits on this bugger, but tightened them up and its spot on now:

Was worried these rear banjos would leak too but they're spot on:

With that done, I adjusted the handbrake, its so nice playing with clean and rust free parts!

Only remaining brake issue I have is my flexi is rubbing the short driveshaft on full lock, any suggestions?

Nice work !

Was the EPAS column hard to wire in ? Where did you take the ignition live from ?

Iain
12-02-11, 06:37 PM
Surprisingly easy, used 6mm 50a thinwall wire to extend the main +ve/-ve wiring and followed the instructions on the RallyWiz controller for the rest.

Ignition live is from a switched relay I set up that is actually causing me some issues (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1803616) but the wires are very thin so any would do.

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/304.JPG

Should they not be the other way round, i know the chance of a nylock nut coming off is marginal, but in case it does, running the bolts the other way round, if the nut spins off, the bolt cant drop out!

Iain
20-02-11, 03:36 PM
I thought Haynes tells you that the bolt head should be towards the back of the car? Maybe I misread it.

Olly it's built with track in mind, but it'll probably do more road miles than track miles (running it in, weekend use, etc). Why do you ask?

Olly it's built with track in mind, but it'll probably do more road miles than track miles (running it in, weekend use, etc). Why do you ask?I can appreciate wanting a nice clean looking bay, but when you've paid nigh on £300 for an open pit trackday, and you need to splice into your loom in a hurry, or on a sessioned day, 3 minutes before you're on track, as time is money, you'll no longer want to be taking the wing off, and radiator out to get to your wires...

Seems confusing, as the car is quite clearly built for purpose, but then the odd oddity (wires hidden) is strange...

peester
20-02-11, 07:28 PM
you should be able to splice the hidden loom inside the car; passenger footwell area; so no worries like

Iain
20-02-11, 07:53 PM
Understand what you're saying Olly. Only put the wiring in the wing because I needed to relocate it in the first place (rollcage comes out where the original hole is). As Peester said I can splice that in the footwell, and can pull the slam panel wiring through from the front if I need to access that, but it's only front lights and radiator fan so can't see me needing to touch them.

Rich
20-02-11, 08:03 PM
the bolt usually goes in the front of the hub so the nut goes towards the back of the car, doesnt really matter tbh as long as its done up tight in the first place

AlexW

Bodgery pokery 10 secs before you go out is part + parcel of the fun!

Lots of reasons, in that bit of wiring:

Fan stops working, no power to coil, need an earth, loads of reasons.

I have cut hoses from my Vectra tow car before and used them on my Nova, infact my socket set is still missing its long 12mm socket as it joining a pipe on the vectra!

Benn
21-02-11, 07:47 PM
I have a bolt either way on my coilovers (each faces a different way) as a just in case, even tho they are done up frigging tight.

Wheel hitting the tie bar is odd tho, as the wheels arnt that wide.. Mine touch but are 6.5 wide.

Is it an 1.2 chassy? I see the front tyres are very close, but maybe it's enough place for a 1.4 or 1.6 anti-roll bar. These are have a cross stabilizer too.

You might be ok.

Mine didnt touch on with the car down either and it still failed.
The mot guy checked it with the car in the air, and then with the the suspension under load. And he failed it for "wrong sized wheels causing tyre to rub gearbox and oil pipes when on full lock"
Or something along those lines.

This is why you need to strike a rapport with a garage, or know someone who knows the owners/works there, as most the time unless they are really anal, or don't like the car they will pass anything, as most garages hardly check things like this, but luckily where i take mine they like me and the car and know i need it too be checked properly, but not to fail it on silly things, like the twisted front brake hose, i had to spin mine round for mot, he passed it but said thought he would leave it to me to do etc.

Looking well smart mate, as for the bonnet gap, considering it's a FG bonnet that gap is nice, and possibly a good thing, as it could flex at speed and lift IF there was a BIGGER gap!

And for the grill to wing issues, are these the same wings, or new/other one's etc?
When i had mine painted i forgot to place them on the car for fit first, your meant to fit them and adjust the gap using the part that attached to the grill, bend them to suit etc before spray, as i didn't i had the same issue, so i got some sharp wire cutters (and type of sharp cutters will do) and i just gently trimmed the one end of my grill till it didn't touch/rub on the wing corner etc.

As for bumpers they'll be fine B2B'd etc, don't waste dosh painting them IMO.

Them wheels are they Cesaro's? lol we all have them now!

Looking really good now ,mate, cant wait to see it.

Good point on the bonnet gap I'll leave it. Very limited mockup on the wings unfortunately, just checked door and bonnet gaps but not headlights and grille. I did think about trimming the grille down but it's a miami blue one painted white so didn't fancy having to touch that up. Meh it'll do for now...

Cesaros, how dare you! They're Revolution Millenium wheels lol

scott.parker
26-02-11, 01:15 PM
Trust me you could nibble the end of the grill down gently with some cutters, and then just use some touch up paint on it..

I'll attack the grille in the future, for now it's on and good enough for an MOT so I'm happy

Glad you replied Ian as I can't remember. lol You can see from the pics they have allowed slightly more adjustment as they would have fouled in their current position

I noticed my bottom pulley was wobbling around quite a lot and research showed me this is because the rubber can perish and move slightly. Got myself a new bottom pulley from TXAutosport.

New one on left @ 566g, old one on right @ 1.23kg so not a bad weight saving either.

And fitted. It's very tight on the cambelt pulley so I have no idea how it'll ever come off if I need to remove it!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/336.JPG

Also fitted my passenger seat and harness, couldn't get it as far back as I'd have liked as the rollcage bar is in the way. Also I think the seat rails are wonky as the drivers side touches the window and the passenger side is miles away lol

Whoops on the seat rails! lol

Often thought about investing in one off them alloy bottom pulleys, would you say there any good? strong enough your think?? Good build etc?

I wouldn't have gone for the pulley if mine wasn't wobbling and the rubber wasn't looking a bit worse for wear.

Seems well enough made, will do the job no problems, although I've read about the rubber in the standard pulley acting as a dampener/balancer for the crankshaft somehow so I'm still a little skeptical it's good to fit one.

Good weight saving though :)

Now insured and MOT'd  Was spot on on the way to the MOT, only problem was a HT lead popped off causing it to run on 3.

Thanks to Prey off here for his role as 'support crew' following me with loads of tools and a towrope lol

Iain
19-03-11, 08:50 PM
Connor it's the A606 towards Melton Mowbrary just off the A52, good blast out with loads of nice windy smaller roads off it too

Simps yeah I am enjoying it, there's been no breakdowns or problems so far so well chuffed with its reliability (last build was a nightmare, so many problems). Plenty of power from the XE without taking it above 4000rpm (as I'm running it in) and it handles amazingly (I'll admit the last build handled like crap but this is fantastic). Absorbs the bumps well and doesn't crash about. And it's not even aligned yet so the tracking is probably miles out!

Will look awesome on the new wheels, what colour are they going to be?

Should have got better tyres than T1Rs though ;) Hankook RS2 is similar to R888 but costs much less

Iain
20-03-11, 12:29 PM
Yeah Spud probably :) Got a mate who's going to clean and wax it so I'll get him to treat the bumpers lol

I chickened out bright colours and they're going silver, wooooow exciting lol I've always liked T1Rs, while I'm racking up the road miles to get it all bedded in they'll be perfect.

Pretty rubbish update but I'm struggling for things to do on this car now, got 800 miles on the clocks without one single breakdown, success lol

Set my mates off snow foaming, washing, and waxing it:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/348.JPG

This wing worried me as it didn't clean up when I cleaned it myself:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/349.JPG

But my mate worked his magic on it and it came up lovely:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/350.JPG

My job was the bumpers, but my puny heat gun wasn't good enough to do anything major, so need to get a better gun and have another bash at them lol

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/351.JPG

Today's progress, whipped off my plug cover:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/352.JPG

Masked it up:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/353.JPG

And sanded the letters off for a factory look:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/354.JPG

And one of the guys washing my motor managed to get some ace snaps of it all waxed up:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/Photoshoot_02_04_2011/IMG_1389.jpg

My favourite so far:
