Due to popular passenger demand I had to fit a footrest:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/618.JPG

The plan is to fill the tailgate panel with circuits this year, although I'm failing so far!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/619.JPG

Also played with some fluffy stuff that Prey gave me to try out lol Looks pretty nuts.

Booked onto Donington for an evening session 21st June if anyone wants to join me: http://www.circuit-days.co.uk/event_info.asp?id=458

Also collected some more tyres for another few Cesaros I've picked up - thanks to Tom Reid for couriering them up to me.

Stickers look really good iain, where did you get them from?!

Maybe you should get some taxi style stickers made up stating that cleaning up of sick etc. is at the passengers cost/fine lol

Car really has come on leaps and bounds though mate, now let's get that pannel full of stickers : )

Iain
04-06-12, 08:46 PM
Some local sticker making chump whipped them up for me but made the Blyton circuit wrong lol:p Nah thanks to Nova Ian for the stickers, I'm sure he has the vectors saved away if anyone wants some making!

Make me up a sticker if you know Nathan's going to another trackday and I'll lob it on for the day lol

Thats it.....my ARB is going back on! Did you have to fit blocks to clear the exhaust manifold?

Iain
04-06-12, 08:55 PM
Yay lol Yes lowering blocks at the front but it's still rubbing my Ashley 4-2-1 slightly so needs lowering a tad more. And that's with lowered tiebars on the spherical bearing front brackets!

Pistol Pete
04-06-12, 08:58 PM
Oh. I meant blocks for the mounts that bolt the ARB to the tie bars. My tie bars havent been lowered.

Yes I have those but it's still touching slightly.

What type of spigot are you looking for Ian? Just a metal ring to sit inside the spacer? The ones I got for my V6 brake conversions were just two metal 5mm thick rings 56.5-70mm to locate the disc onto the hub centrally. Might be worth looking at some of them if its for the spacer.

Bingo, V6 spigots fit perfectly! No more lining the spacers up by hand!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/623.JPG

I was very pleased when it slotted straight into the middle!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/624.JPG

All fitted:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/625.JPG

Rear required a slight chamfer to clear a slightly curved bit of the drum:

Rear fits nice and snug too:

Nice to meet you too, always nice putting usernames to faces! I am doing some research in to the Cav style rear ARB, might be interesting to try out.

Next trackday is Donington evening session starting at 5:30pm on the 21st (week on Thursday). After that thinking of Rockingham in July.

Nice one. Where did you end up getting them from out of interest and how much were they?

User bs_auto_salvage or similar on eBay, £11 a pair so ended up more expensive than the spacer themselves lol But laser cut 5mm thick so made quite nicely.

I give up putting my car back together lol

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/628.JPG

Driving around the other night and heard a clatter under the car as I was pulling over, found a stray M10 bolt that had come out of the gearbox mount. I wonder why they're not staying in properly?! lol

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/629.JPG

Also it keeps pulling the passenger side shaft out of the box and losing all its oil. Have I got these shafts the right way round, with the split one being the slightly longer 'equal' length one? I'd assume so as its quite a difference but thought I'd check!

Thread lock those bolts into the gearbox, do them up FT and make sure they are the perfect length too. I've had all manner of issues with mounts, so figured the way forward was a 4th.

Iain
16-06-12, 06:45 PM
Well I've drilled, tapped and helicoiled all three gearbox mounts, swapped to some original looking bolts that weren't THAT much longer but a little bit. Loctited as you said BRoadGhost and they're nice and tight:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/630.JPG

While replacing my CV circlip, bottom balljoint and track rod end I thought I'd bosh these bad boys in, should be interesting to find tune the camber and see if they stay positioned as I've heard of people having problems:

Set up the camber bolts today, really easy to get the right adjustment so I hope they stay in the desired position.

Lowering it with the suspension compressed to ride hieght:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/632.JPG

Before, 1 deg on the passenger side and a little less on the drivers side for some reason:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/633.JPG

After, both sides set up at 1.5 deg neg camber:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/634.JPG

Set up the toe again to straight and went for a test drive, turn in feels really vague and slow so reset it back to 1mm toe out and it feels lovely now. Checked my camber after a quick test run and we're still good:

I usually measure sill to floor before jacking it up so I know where to lower it back down to. This time it was already on stands so I measured wheel centre to tyre outer and lowered the car down using the CV thread as a centrepoint.

After setting up the camber and putting it back on it's wheels and having a test drive I parked it in a different place on the driveway and they both read 1.5 degrees so hopefully done it right!

TREs returned, going to get the taper inverted in the hub I think.

A couple of pics of what I've been doing lately...

New spherical bearings in my tie bar brackets. For anyone wanting to order some they had GEG20ES-2RS stamped on the original ones and are the larger outer diameter ones (42mm)

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/558.JPG

Sorry to quote from yonks ago but did you change the bearings due to having play in them or just because you were changing a few parts on the car?

Iain
18-06-12, 07:32 PM
No probs Simon. One had some play so I renewed both bearings.

The brackets have grease nipples on however I had neglected to grease them since fitting (9,000 miles of road and track use in all weathers) due to ignorance/being unaware so I think this killed them. With the new bearings I am greasing them every couple of months (did it the other day actually) to hopefully prolong their life.

SimonTW
18-06-12, 07:49 PM
I have the same brackets. I haven't done a great deal of miles on them since I rebuilt them after I had them powdercoated when new I haven't greased them and now one of them has started clunking and knocking and seems to have a visible amount of play in them so presume I might have killed them. Guess it's probably down to me not keeping them greased up. Cheers for the info. Much appreciated.

Iain
18-06-12, 07:57 PM
D'oh! Yes I remember seeing the brackets in your WIP. I was getting all sorts of clunks, groans and creaks which I initially thought was the poly bushes. Sounded like a duck quacking down the street!

My new bearings were about £35 the pair from Rollerball Bearings in Nottingham which was a fair amount cheaper than Protec replacements. Hopefully the part number above will help you source some locally if you do need new ones.

Iain
18-06-12, 10:38 PM
Just taken it for a test drive, the front end is MEGA twitchy with this new setup but it digs into corners lovely.

Also the passenger side shaft is still falling out, ANY ideas please post them in the following thread as I'm panicking for Thursday's trackday! http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?186969-F20-driveshaft-seal-leaking/page2

Iain
21-06-12, 10:49 PM
Back from Donington, another success story with caveats. lol

The new geometry setup didn't really work that well, does anyone know if crossply tyres like camber? It didn't seem as stable and predictable on the edge compared to before. I'll be going back to 1 deg neg camber as it's unusable on the roads too!

Despite that I think I managed a best lap of around 1:29-1:30? Video here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNHTLpdWdY0

And a few mishaps during the day, first was an epic drifto moment as it started raining, second was Coxy putting me off in the Radical and me completely missing the corner and falling off the track ROFL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVsXeemEqzI

And the day ended 15 minutes early as my backbox sheared off! Just went really raspy mid lap as it snapped!

Iain
21-06-12, 11:18 PM
Glad it's not just me then Mieran! Gonna weld it back together, it's not corroded just cracked clean between the backbox and the system join.

The rear box is on a polybush but the middle is back on original rubbers since it melted two pairs of poly middles. There's no flexi in the system so its under a fair amount of strain throughout I imagine.

Nice lap, looks a little 'on the edge' a few time though, what tyres/springs you using now?

Iain
22-06-12, 04:11 PM
Still got those Avon ACB10 semi slicks. They're crossply tyres - I've been doing some reading and I don't think they like much if any camber, which hopefully explains why it felt 'on the edge' during corners and was pulling heavily to one side on the straights.

I'm reverting my camber back to what they were before camber bolts now, I'll revisit those changes when I move to radial semi slicks.

Backbox repainted and fitted, good as new!

As mentioned a few pages back I'm sick of the coilover springs dislocating so I've sorted myself some helper springs. Thanks to Mieran who donated me some at PV show but unfortunately they're slightly too larger ID and they didn't locate well on the platforms, and the middle platform didn't fit the 2.25" springs. Thanks anyway Mieran!

So got some new 3" ones from Gaz, on with fitting the fronts. Initially I wanted them to be at the bottom so there's less chance of them moving side to side:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/643.JPG

However after fitting them to the car, the middle platform bottomed out on the adjusting seat meaning the weight of the car would be on a plastic ring!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/644.JPG

Ended up fitting them both at the top:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/645.JPG

Much better:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/646.JPG

Good reason for fitting the rears, the top platform can simply fall off when you extend the shock:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/647.JPG

Job jobbed:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/648.JPG

Rears could do with being 4" open length really (as I anticipated) as I've had to raise the rideheight slightly to keep them in position when on the floor. Unfortunately Gaz only do them in 3" so might have to sort some elsewhere, or just get creative with the cable ties.

burgo
23-06-12, 10:49 PM
i dont see how the weight of the car isn't still on the plastic ring

Iain
23-06-12, 10:57 PM
Well it's still on the plastic ring, but thats pressed up against the coilbound helper so essentially a solid lump. At the bottom when the spring didn't go coilbound it was pressing the locating bit against the bottom spring paltform and the bit the spring sits on would not be pressing against anything and likely snap it. Bad explanation lol

Set up the camber bolts today, really easy to get the right adjustment so I hope they stay in the desired position.

Lowering it with the suspension compressed to ride hieght:

Before, 1 deg on the passenger side and a little less on the drivers side for some reason:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/633.JPG

After, both sides set up at 1.5 deg neg camber:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/634.JPG

I going to try and set mine up today which the same tool, and remember you have done yours, but looking at those pics, isn't that first reading -1.25/-1.3 degrees? And the second one about -1.75degrees? I'd assume the measurement would be the middle of the bubble like a spirit level?

Iain
01-07-12, 04:24 PM
Hey Mazz. So if you look on the underside of the tool you've got the adjustment dial which you use to 'zero' the tool on a vertical surface. I zeroed the tool with the 'positive edge' of the bubble reading 0 (towards the neg side), so all my readings are from the 'positive edge' of the bubble. This is a bit more accurate than guessing the middle of the bubble each time as you can line the edge up with the marked lines.

Well after a page of mocking here's some more mods to potentially dislike!

Satin black sunstrip as the old one was looking tatty and badly fitted:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/651.JPG

Then off with the rear bumper for a plan I discussed a while ago when painting the bumpers. Still looking fresh under there:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/652.JPG

Hack hack hack lol

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/653.JPG

No more mk2 parachute effect, woop!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/654.JPG

Doesn't look too in your face from the back/top really:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/655.JPG

Also been mocking these up every couple of days, swaying towards fitting them as my sills are taking a battering and I like the way they box the rear wheels in slightly?!

Sunstrip - needed (IMO)
Rear bumper - fair point parachutes slow you down.
Side Skirts - Stop mocking them up, and get them on.

Ah that makes sense now, thanks. I did have a brief attempt earlier but ran outta time, but i've give another go

Just fit the skirts with the proper clips.
Drill tiny holes, self tapper with some silicon on thread, cover said screw over with silicon to stop rust.

Mine had no rust after well over a year. Which is saying something for a nova.

Nice job on the bumper, it's something i should really do. I would say paint the wheel well black so it does stand out so much.

Iain

Yeah someone else suggested that, kind of pointless having the whole underside white/body coloured if you just paint the bits on show black though lol

If I don't decide to remove the well (looking into it at the moment) then it can stay white, I'm not too bothered!

Hmmmmmmmm still unsure about the wheel well. I hate doing stuff like this when it's been painted though :(

You do get to cut the rear panel a bit higher so I'd have to lop yet more out of the bumper:

BRoadGhost
03-07-12, 02:05 PM
Yeah it's worth doing imo, if you can get it started from and inline with the floorpan it gives you a chance to space frame where the fuel tank used to be, if you're not running it there.

Although the trade off is a marked weight gain, it is where you want it. The other down side is the drag low pressure makes; I found going under the beam means a proportion of the flow, along the exhaust tunnel pushes down on the top of the diffuser and out the sides rather than under, up and out.

Iain
03-07-12, 02:16 PM
Still running a fuel tank so if I were to do it it'd simply be to remove the well itself.

Cheers! It's a proper cage mount yeah (Manfrotto double joint thing) but the camera seems to screw up when mounted behind me - very dark inside and too bright white outside - rendering it unwatchable. Benn

He's got a full flat alloy floor, ending in a huge diffuser... I'll look for a pic...

Start of...

righty, so a little update
first job on this evening list was to mount the new, bigger mill motor that is hopefully much more suited to milling than the last one, which was fairly easy, i drilled and tapped the plates, while Brian bored out the pulley to suit the fat new shaft on the lathe..
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c109/leeh303/01122009737.jpg
Brian also had it all wired in and working by the time i left, and it seems pretty bloody good tbh, so we can now mill stuff again, yay!

after that, i didi a bit more on the splitter, having re familiarised myself with TIG welding, even got some nice looking welds
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c109/leeh303/01122009738.jpg
and some not so nice obviously, but what are grinders for!!lmao
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c109/leeh303/01122009739.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c109/leeh303/01122009740.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c109/leeh303/01122009741.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c109/leeh303/01122009742.jpg
looking pretty good now, sides are tacked in place, need to work out how to clamp it up to do the middle ones though, as the ally needs to take the shape of the strakes, should be a challenge! roll on the weekend…

And

so, first job was out with the old…
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c109/leeh303/16012010857.jpg
that done, time for some CAD and a bit of cutting with a jigsaw…we used 4mm polycarb from a builders merchants btw… then the fun of fitting them in the frame, made harder by the shape and the fact a full size window isn't meant to fit in one go, hence the quarter light as standard…
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c109/leeh303/16012010858.jpg
then a bit of silicon round the seals, and a small bracket to stop the window falling and we were done!
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c109/leeh303/16012010859.jpg
looks way better and has sved willay approximately 8 kg with the mechanisms etc removed
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c109/leeh303/16012010860.jpg
fronts are next!!
so, that done, did a bit more to the nova, namely making it so i can jack it up and adding some decent fixings to the floor, still some to do but i got it down off the stands just to see how she looks, cant get to look properly unfortunately as there's a MK1 MR2 in the way as matt decided to get one, but it is nice to see it on the floor, doesn't look too low to me either:)

In my opinion your very wrong, Renault claim the tiny diffusers they put on clios work, so how can that not, I do also think his diffuser is to much of an angle but that just means its not optimised it doesn't mean it won't work. Dar also reported good results from his simple diffuser and that is just a diffuser.

Doesn't matter what it is, it's drag from wind and such that cause probs, slow flow or stopping it.

I was gonna say look at the new line of eco Volovs. They have totally flat plastic floors as it reduced wind drag meaning smoother flow meaning better mpg...

Yeah Lee's done well to get the mid section entirely covered in such a simple piece. I had problems with the exhaust touching when I had a go, so have put that part on hold. What I might do is just cover the gap over the exhaust tunnel when I look at it again, to keep the weight down and as the rest of the floor is fairly flat.

I've added a splitter on the front recently and can feel the difference straight away at speed, so adding a flat front underside would be bliss.

Surely the point of track day cars are for a bit of fun on a track. Most of the things you're talking of doing aren't even allowed in most entry level track racing classes. Yes in theory its just a bit of fun chucking the car about on track. However there's plenty of fun to be had in development, learning things around stuff like this, making it faster/handle better, reducing laptimes (taken off videos, no timing on the day!) and the sense of achievement associated with that stuff. If you're not bothered about all that stuff just buy a 205 GTI and sling it about? lol

First off, they're Revolution Millenniums NOT Compomotives or Cesaros lol

I fitted new rear quarters and space was tight on a 5.5J 15" wheel, so I flared them all to clear anything I'd ever need to run. I can run 6mm spacers and 195 wide semi slicks and still get my hand up between the arch and tyre.

ooo touchy lol fair play mate! lol

yer there cheapo cesaros reps.

Iain

Hey Baggott. Thanks. It's not me that does the flocking, the car was just being used as a demo/shelf for a friend, here's a link to the guy that does the flocking: http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?185514-Flocking...

The tigerseal has stayed on the paintwork and come away from the clips, typical eh! lol I've picked up some other bonding sealant to try so fingers crossed it's dry tomorrow.

OK bonded the clips on last night, fitted the skirts this morning, gave them a tug 20 minutes later and they fell off. So drilled and self tappered all 16 clips, FALL OFF NOW YOU BUGGERS.

Also I was quite liking the splitter attached to this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/terrible___1/100_9566.jpg

So off to the scrappy and £5 got me one - albeit a slightly battered and wonky one it'll do!

splitter looks good but its going to take a right battering as you nova is really low already

Iain
14-07-12, 04:15 PM
It's not that low! Just measured 8.5cm from the splitter to the floor, should be plenty!

turbojolt
14-07-12, 04:19 PM
really looks lower then that when you stand near it, mind you for 5 quid if it brakes just get another one lol

Isn't a spilter ment to spilt the air... half up and half down (up to the rad and down under the car)

Where that just looks like a damn to stop air...?

Iain
14-07-12, 08:59 PM
I wanted it to reduce the amount of air going under the car (whether or not its big enough to be worthwhile I don't know!) so for that purpose the scoop shape is ideal?

Benn

Ah ok.

Now everyone will be fitting them after i told you what it was, and yes im am taking credit for that, the rear bumper idea and the graphics! lol lol lol

Looks ace mate, like the splitter, did think of them a few times in the past hence why i knew what it was straight away, im looking at putting something on my mk1.

Iain
20-07-12, 10:12 PM
Oh Burgo :( I'll be back there at some point cos I found the track pretty fun, hopefully in the sun next time as the track gets EXTREMELY slippery in the wet!

All in all a good day at Rockingham, a small number of cars on track meant it was pretty quiet and relaxed throughout the day. No car damage except another set of exhaust hangers melted through (my fault for trying polys again).

We did this circuit, all the black and round the red bit (extra bit compared to the BTCC I think).

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/668.JPG

Parked up in the morning:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/664.JPG

The sun came out so I set my worker monkey Nova Ian to work fitting me some slicks!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/665.JPG

Liking the all-blackness of this!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/666.JPG

Span it coming round the fast banked corner at about 100mph, luckily avoided the wall and ended up on the grass on the inside. Typically the camera turned itself off during this session, sigh! Muddy aftermath:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/667.JPG

I captured some video footage too. Here's some dry laps at full chat:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CqkA8uetmo

And here's me grappling on a very very wet lap, probably seems quite slow and it really was due to lack of grip!

Man that track looks awesome. But 420p? Turn the quality up. I do like that there doesn't seem to be any one else on track with you..lol Am not liking the black wheels tho :(

You seem a very relaxed driver too and keep your hands on the wheel. All very good.

20-07-12, 11:23 PM
are you running a quick rack?

Iain
21-07-12, 10:29 AM
Sorry Ben its a bit of a juggling act with the camera battery quality space etc. Think I need to invest in a proper sports video camera after all.

Yes Quaife quick rack and corsa epas making the steering easy!

I'm pretty sure my powerflex exhaust mounts have a steel cable running through them to stop them giving way if melted throug. What brand are you using?

Iain
21-07-12, 07:13 PM
Poly-X from RallyDesign. No such metal in these ones!

nice work as usual mate, would be good to see some edited videos with cut scenes of the incar footage when you need to correct the car like the big slide on your last outing

Iain

How's this? Just been making a compilation of slides and corrections to show just how slippy it was!

Yeah I did try and do some smooth/quicker laps but tbh it was all too slow so I just smashed it about for max fun factor lol

Something like 17 cars booked on and barely any actually out any any one time so hardly saw another car on the circuit!

Haha fair play! I'm hoping to get the nova up to my house this Saturday, trying to swap the engine's and get it prep'd for the Mallory on the 13th OCt if you fancy it? Trying to drag Al out to play! After driving round the Nurburgring the other week, I've got the enthusiasm to get it back on track!

mallory is ace..

gerards is the tricky bit, its a bend that lasts forever, loads of people carry too much speed into it & then when they suddenly find out it tightens up on the exit, they are already on the way to the scene of the accident...

i used to cycle there for race meetings when i was a kid... i love the place.

It's my local track now, only 30miles away... I'm fitting a baffled sump for those types of corners lol. Big ends started knocking at Bedford on slicks just on the back straight after the fast hairpin.

Well no real updates since Rockingham, but I'm booked on at Blyton Park again on the 22nd so figured I'd better do some work on it.

Replaced a wheelbearing with play, and no matter what I do the new bearings still have play, so screw it it can stay with play in! Pic of empty machined Nova knuckle/Cav hub, just cos lol

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/669.JPG

Also when there noticed my brake pads are woefully destroyed, so ordered a set of Carbone Lorraine CL5+s which I'm waiting to turn up:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/670.JPG

Due to the position of my seats the old door handles would crack my elbow regularly, so ordered some straps:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/671.JPG

Bolted to the door behind the doorcard and modified the handle surround slightly so they can poke out. Still regret not ordering black ones but oh well.

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/672.JPG

My PZRacing shift light wasn't working off the revcounter feed, assume because it doesn't come from the ECU, so ordered a little control unit that has a wire sensing off a HT lead.

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/673.JPG

Shift lights positioned on the dashboard:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/674.JPG

Still to prove that they work properly, so there's still time for them to be a failure.

Also fixed my in-car camera footage for trackdays with a GoPro Hero2, much better image quality and no vibrations:

Iain

I'm not keen on the straps, might try and mount the alloy handle a bit further forward.

Also the shift lights still done work, so they're probably getting ripped out, FFS waste of money!
