Oh lol was going to say, on my doorstep and never heard of it!!!

Have you tried custom cages? Can't be too far from you?

Iain
15-06-10, 07:04 PM
Ian I've just tried one of those new fangled motorsport cable tie fasteners and it works spot on  One job down.

The Simps
15-06-10, 07:15 PM
How rude of me! Forgot to say good work as always! Engine looks great - seems a shame to put it into a car! lol

I've only got my motor fixed wit one bracket, albeit very hefty! Hope it holds up. I like the tack the nut to the scuttle idea tho.

Iain
15-06-10, 07:18 PM
Think I remember yours, you used that massive thick metal box section? Well now mine's held in with 2 bolts and a cable tie and it doesn't move anywhere without taking the scuttle with it. :)

nova ian
15-06-10, 07:20 PM
Good good :d Motorsport fastener is lighter than a nut and bolt too!! lol lol

Prey
15-06-10, 08:34 PM
Tut tut lionel - using three fixings when two is perfectly good enough.... think of all that extra weight....

Tut tut lionel - using three fixings when two is perfectly good enough.... think of all that extra weight....
Lol this made me chuckle
for this extra weight gained you must now shave all your hair to maintain the weight balance ;)

Benn
15-06-10, 09:18 PM
Comming along, get that bay painted. Would think the wiper motor in in there well enough with 2 bolts, mine only had 1 and looked ok.

Engine looks good.

Got my new cams through the post thanks to a MIG user. Quite good condition with minimal wear marks and no scoring:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/951.JPG

Lifters in with plenty of assembly lube:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/952.JPG

Small amount of sealant around the end caps to stop any oil leaks:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/953.JPG

Cams in and pulleys torqued up:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/954.JPG

Trial fitted the inlet, the fricking thing is huge, tempted to bin it for something else

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/955.JPG

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/956.JPG

New GM pulleys, tensioners and belt to go on:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/957.JPG

Just need to go get my silicone beather and fit the rocker baffle and the cover can go on and I can get it timed up. Not sure whether to do the breather mod (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114039) or not too?

scott.parker
22-06-10, 11:19 PM
Do the breather mod if your taking it on track..

As for the inlet stop moaning, get it in the car and then worry later..lol

Iain
23-06-10, 09:57 PM
Followed Adams guide (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114039) and the SBD guide (http://www.sbdev.co.uk/Info_sheets/Oil_systems/2.0L%2016v%20SBD%20Cam%20cover%20breathing%20modif ication.htm) to cut down the plate in the rocker for the 'breather mod':

It always makes me think Eh!.. every time i see how little is left after it's been "modded" lol

Iain
23-06-10, 10:09 PM
It does seem odd throwing away 9/10ths of it but oh well, less to clean so win win lol

Iain
30-06-10, 06:36 PM
Probs sick of seeing it, but the engine is pretty much finished now. Shiny stainless rocker bolts, inlet manifold and powercap on, most silicone hoses temporarily on etc

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/959.JPG

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/960.JPG

Also tried my new stonechip on my old motor, 3M 08878 white anti-chip paint. Went on really nice and textured with my new Schutz gun. Just waiting to hear back from 3M if I'm okay to not topcoat it cos it's a really nice glossy white already:

Engines looking so factory fresh (minus the racing red block lol)
Now get that engine in!!! :thumb:

Benn

Dizzy cap fail, paint it red to match the block dude. Engine looks sexy.

Was thinking the same or fit a black one.

REALLY looking forward to seeing this finished and on track!

Benn
30-06-10, 08:45 PM
Yeah yeah, satin black would look cool too.

Paul
30-06-10, 08:46 PM
Ian, can I have a bit of your old shell please?

AlexW
30-06-10, 09:02 PM
Thought you got rid of that old shell!

Iain
01-07-10, 07:49 AM
Keep meaning to chop it up but it's come in quite useful at times.

Dizzycap will be replaced as it's just the one that came with the engine at the mo - hopefully a new red one will be brighter.

Paul I've PMd you :)

Benn
01-07-10, 08:12 AM
Paint it.

Iain
03-07-10, 06:05 PM
Under arches now in stonechip :)

Just need to spray a bit of primer and brush on some 2pack glacier white.

Benn
03-07-10, 06:28 PM
Can i ask why are you not doing behind the "splash guard"

Iain
03-07-10, 09:24 PM
Didn't think there'd be any stones hitting there - will paint over that area when I do the rest of the arches.

Benn
03-07-10, 09:32 PM
Ok cool, i was thinking more to just protect it.

Iain
10-07-10, 08:48 PM
OK who's sick of me waffling about stonechip/underside? lol Me too, so cracked on today sorting it out once and for all

Tipped it over on it's side again:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/965.JPG

Loads of tyres to spread the weight:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/966.JPG

Chipped all the Hammerite off the top, the stuff flaked off with literally a brush of a screwdriver so would NEVER have lasted on the road. White stuff left on is the tinned stonechip I used - proper crap compared to the proper compressor stuff TBH:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/967.JPG

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/968.JPG

Coated in POR15 paint - bit of a waste cos it's really meant for bare metal but hopefully it'll dry to leave a good protective coating anyway (if not I'll strip it off again lollollol):

scott.parker
12-07-10, 10:07 AM
lol more stone chip and painting of the underside!

Will be worth it though mate..

Scott

Iain
24-07-10, 03:09 PM
Stonechipped the underside finally, a nice sunny day after all the rain we've had!

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/971.JPG

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/972.JPG

Only issue is some of it has gone slightly crinkly before it's even dried:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/973.JPG

Assume this is only cosmetic and won't affect the strength of the finish? How would this happen? Maybe a thick layer over an undried layer?

twin40s
24-07-10, 05:29 PM
Looking good mate.
Is there no need to put seam sealer on the seams before stone chippping?

Iain
24-07-10, 05:32 PM
Yeah I like to seam seal it before stonechipping, I left the original stuff on and only grinded off the top layer of flakey paint. Here's a pic from earlier in the WIP, these layers are still on:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/489.JPG

twin40s
24-07-10, 05:34 PM
Damn thats what i thought the bodyshop were my car is haven't done it will it be bad to do it now its been stone chipped

Iain
24-07-10, 05:36 PM
They may be right and I may be wrong TBH, as I've proved I'm clueless and rubbish when it comes to painting the underside lol

Benn
24-07-10, 10:19 PM
Yeah to thick, the pressure makes a wave look when its sprayed on. Dont worry about it. Get some white on.

scott.parker
25-07-10, 07:14 PM

25-07-10, 07:19 PM
Underside looks good now Iain - I think I'm going to Gravitex the underside of my Mk1 (We use that at my work and it looks cool and is also overpaintable) :)

I look forward to seeing more pictures

Adam
03-08-10, 10:07 PM
Underside looks well Iain

trackdaynova
04-08-10, 05:58 PM
at least it'll look good upside down when you roll it on track lol only joking mate, cracking work - get it done - get it out on the black stuff!

djbrowney
04-08-10, 06:01 PM
i had this problem with mine cracking, aparantly you should only put one layer on. Also try and keep it out of sun Excess heat because if its a thick later the top goes of before the bottom and crack :)

Iain
04-08-10, 06:09 PM
at least it'll look good upside down when you roll it on track

That's at least four years away, will be rusty again by then lol

I put a thin layer on, followed by a thicker layer, then topped up any areas that looked low. It started giving that effect before it had even dried (I could flat some of them out with my finger) so probably hasn't affected it's strength, meh.

Iain
04-08-10, 06:28 PM
Talking of rust, some was creeping back through in the engine bay. Primer and seam sealer wasn't up to the job so I've bare metal'd the areas (and potential areas):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/974.JPG

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/975.JPG

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/976.JPG

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/977.JPG

Which have now been prepped and painted with that POR15 stuff.

Also while it's been rainy finished cleaning out my CV joints (second hand inners and 22 spline shafts, and new outer CV joints), painting everything up nice, regreasing and building back up:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/978.JPG

Proper CV joint clamps fitted:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/979.JPG

And refitted the weight with new bolts, although not entirely sure what this does:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/980.JPG

Benn
04-08-10, 06:41 PM
Thought the bay was all done?

Shafts look great.

Iain
04-08-10, 06:44 PM
I had taken the rust back to bare metal and etch primered/normal primered/seam sealered, but rust spots were showing through the primer again around the areas shown. Hopefully should be sorted now!

I did a shoddy job on bay prep anyway so will be sanding most of the primer in there off lol Good times

Benn
04-08-10, 06:47 PM
lol get it done! and get it in to a body-shop.

trackdaynova
04-08-10, 10:14 PM
freshly sorted bay rusting already lol
Definitely progressing too slow lol
nice one bud

Iain
06-08-10, 05:33 PM
Anti rust paint everywhere, woo

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/981.JPG

Getting any holes I need sorted before paint. Since my rollcage triangulation goes through the original wiring loom hole, I've decided to take some inspiration from Benn and Prey's latest wiring loom progress to run it here:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/982.JPG

Handy hole from the side repeater I can use for the loom to enter the car:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/983.JPG

Not as much as I had hoped but all the loom extension soldering should be inside the car:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/984.JPG

Loom will enter the engine bay here, haven't got a side repeater to hand, but this should clear everything yes? It's pretty much in the middle of the slam where it meets the wing:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/985.JPG

On second thoughts looking at these pics, once it's soldered up it won't be removable lol Any suggestions for this? Or just bigger holes and grommets?

brucer
06-08-10, 06:28 PM
tidy work, everything should miss it fine. if not then dont run any side reps. :)

Iain
06-08-10, 07:00 PM
Cheers Brucer, a very practical resolution; just remove anything that isn't gonna fit right!

On second thoughts looking at these pics, once it's soldered up it won't be removable

Sorted this now. Just holesaw'd the loom holes to 38mm and going to order two headlamp grommets designed for a 'Triumph TR6/T120 (1962-70), TR7/T140 (1973-), BSA A65 (1971-72) and many other models' (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Headlamp-Wiring-Grommet-BSA-Triumph-Norton-/130330124885?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item1e5847e255)

Adam
07-08-10, 01:00 PM
It might be making a lot of extra work but you could make it removeable using a twist fit connector, like what most vauxhalls have (looks like a round plug that pushes into another plug and then locks shut)

Iain
07-08-10, 01:06 PM
I was looking for all sorts of connectors and plugs that aren't too big and couldn't find any. Ordered myself those grommets, the 38mm hole I've now drilled is big enough to fit all the front plugs through so I can solder it up as one loom again.

Corsa B door loom connections ;)

Iain
07-08-10, 03:20 PM
Corsa B door loom connections ;)
How many wires are on them? Got about 16 wires going to the front for headlights/rad etc.

Today's progress, well chuffed as this is all I wanted to get done this weekend.

Jacked up and on some wheels and tyres, couldn't get it all the way over as my parents weren't about to help me do so:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/986.JPG

Shot some primer on the floorpan:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/987.JPG

On with two layers of 2pack Glacier White:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/988.JPG

Mmm nice OE looking finish:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/989.JPG

Same again on the boot floor:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/990.JPG

All done, the last time anyone will ever see it lol:

Not a problem mate :)

AlexW
07-08-10, 03:49 PM
about 20pins on a corsa door loom, but they are small pins and the OD of them is about 45mm.

Iain
07-08-10, 03:53 PM
Cheers for the info Alex, OD is bigger than the biggest plug on the front loom then (about 35mm) so not much better off.

AlexW
07-08-10, 05:20 PM
what i thought.

Awesome work, glad to see paint on it at last.

Loom work looks good. I did bigger holes just for ease.

07-08-10, 09:31 PM
Nice work dude, getting there "SLOWLY" lol

And i know my parents would be screwing at me if i was doing a project on there drive for the time you have, and spraying on it, so fair play to them to!

Keep going now mate, almost there..

Scott

Iain
08-08-10, 02:02 PM
Apologies for my less-than-acceptable progress Scott lol Yeah fair play to them they've put up with a lot of Nova crap all over the place (there's an exhaust manifold and system in the lounge! lol)

More is now white! That's the cheap half of the car painted at least.

Good work, now do the insides and engine bay, then ship the out sides off to a bodyshop.

Iain
08-08-10, 02:09 PM
With a brush? lol

Benn
08-08-10, 02:14 PM
Why not, as long as you put it on thick it will self level. Then you wont be spending some much when its at the bodyshop.

Remember its a track car, so you'll have wheels and tools and sh(t in the back again way..

Iain
28-08-10, 04:36 PM
Goodbye poxy Nova, see you in a few weeks (hopefully)

Ah that pic shows why its good to strap the car down by the wheels..

Glad its off to the bodyshop! Get the engine all built up ready to go...

Iain
28-08-10, 06:58 PM
I did think that yeah but couldn't see how to tie it down at the wheels with those straps. It didn't roll an inch how it was though...

Adam
29-08-10, 01:21 PM
Good to see it off your drive! lol

Iain
29-08-10, 01:30 PM
I miss it already! Over a year on my driveway and there's just an empty space with a million paint splats now lol

Realised I forgot to take my grille for painting so have separated my old miami blue one:

One grille:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/997.JPG

Drill off the plastic welded bits:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/998.JPG

Left with this, will have to bond it on:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2/999.JPG

Sorted, will drop it in to the painter in the week hopefully (by the way 1000th picture in my WIP lol Mental)

Iain
29-08-10, 01:34 PM
On to the bad news, been far too good recently. Started having a poke around the replacement gearbox I got (first F20 casing was missing a big chunk. Second F20 casing I got had damage inside it. This is the third F20 I'm attempting...)

Start with one badly painted box:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/002.JPG

Remove end cover and have a quick look. I'm no box expert but I can see what's wrong :(

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/003.JPG

Removed the circlip for a better look, the missing piece doesn't go beyond the circlip but not entirely happy with using it... :(

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/004.JPG

So plan now - use this F20 casing, and the internals from my first F20 to make one good one? :tard: Or can I simply replace that one bit? I suck at gearboxes and have no idea what everything is lol

burgo
29-08-10, 01:48 PM
that little chip out of it isnt going to affect it, i do wonder how it got chipper though. just make a good one out of the 3 you have

Paul
29-08-10, 01:50 PM
Just use a soldering iron and melt the slats onto the grill where youve drilled!

Iain
29-08-10, 03:24 PM
Good thinking Paulie. Burgo I don't trust the chip as it looks slightly cracked too (can see on the pics) - so I've removed the gear cluster

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/005.JPG

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/006.JPG

Half way removing the diff and I'm stuck on this stupid huge castle nut thing - is there a proper tool to remove it?

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/007.JPG

I found this little how-to guide which has proved useful so far: http://www.mk2cav.com/index.php/page,95.html?PHPSESSID=7441bf9c98e4cfa16818fe92e2f 79486

Rich
29-08-10, 03:55 PM
hammer and center punch/chisel

Or you can get a special tool

Iain
29-08-10, 04:13 PM
Hammer and punch started rounding a tooth off, felt like it was going to break it before it moved. Is the proper tool just called a 'castle nut removal tool', cos I can't find one?

Rich
29-08-10, 04:36 PM
no sure where you would get one from, or what it would be called tbh

make sure you mark it so it goes back in the same place, and count the amount of turns coming out

Adam
29-08-10, 05:01 PM
Flat piece of steel to fit in the "slots" ?

Iain
29-08-10, 05:18 PM
Will have a go but it seems quite tight. Was going to count turns but imagine the figure will be useless as I have a Quaife diff to go in, so will it need tightening specifically for that again?

Stripped down the old damaged box:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/008.JPG

Internals side by side. Both read different part numbers (left is 90 446 357 & 8415-12, right is 90 142 566 & 8415-8), does this mean they're geared differently?

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/009.JPG

The internals I want to use have play in this part that enters the box - is this a problem? The other set doesn't have any play at all...

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/010.JPG

Can someone maybe do me a how-to to swap over that one broken bit? Is that possible?

Iain
31-08-10, 06:38 PM
Still need a guide on how to change the broken bit over if anyone is knowledgeable on the matter?

Got the diff bearing thinggies out using a big piece of angle iron. Took 5.5 full rotations to come out - can I re-use this setting when refitting my new diff?

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/011.JPG

And out comes the diff:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/012.JPG

Cleaned the gears and inspected them all, none seem to be broken:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/013.JPG

Which was a relief, as I found the broken bit. For info, there's a magnet to pick up metal filings/broken bits inside the housing at the bottom!

And as Paul said on the grill, i did it to mine.

You need to clean your fingernails Ian :p

Iain
01-09-10, 05:17 PM
Thanks Pul.

To speed things along I'm bypassing the oil cooler for now as it can be added at a later date. To do this you need one of these, found on most 8v and ecotec Vauxhalls:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/015.JPG

Bolts straight in ready for the filter:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/016.JPG

Whipped off my clutch bearing, just undo one bolt:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/017.JPG

And off it comes. Assume it's those three bolts behind it to remove the input shaft seal? As I think the kit I've ordered comes with a new one: http://www.transmission-rebuild-kits.co.uk/vauxhall-f16f18f20-gearbox-gasket-seal-p-1059.html?cPath=90_132

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/018.JPG

Box is all clean and treated ready for building back up:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/019.JPG

And FYI the bare F20 casing (with clutch arm thinggy though) is 9kg.

After a thread on MIG about diffs (http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/engines-transmission/447140-installing-quaife-atb-f20.html) containing some helpful pictures and guides, I have cracked on with my own.

Standard diff clamped with crownwheel in a vice (with a rag to avoid damage):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/020.JPG

Undone all the bolts and trial fitted my ATB:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/021.JPG

After reading DarrenH's WIP from the MIG link above, I thought I'd better check if I'm going to have the same problem as him... So inner CV in standard diff:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/022.JPG

And inner CV in Quaife diff. Yep there's a gap caused by the diff being approx 5mm thinner than the standard one:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/023.JPG

Currently talking to Quaife as to whether I should have the spacer there to take up the gap or not, however they're not really sure what I'm talking about on the phone lol

Going to order a new speedo ring and diff bearings today hopefully also.

good work buddy

im sure that little bit of differnce on the diff wont hurt ???

Iain
03-09-10, 08:08 PM
Not sure tbh, it snaps in to the circlip groove ok but has a few mm play in/out - assumed that wouldn't happen if it was exactly the same width as standard. Apparently someone has had these spacers from Quaife before, but they're saying they don't do any spacers end of lol

More info on the Quaife 'issue' - here's a vid showing the play in the inner CV. (The standard diff has zero play in it.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdLmLaB52qA

scott.parker
03-09-10, 10:17 PM
Humm... You could ask Dar/Lee if this doff play is the norm, they fitted mine in my gearbox, so tbh i have no idea if it has this same play issue, if it does i can not say i have noticed anything when driving the car etc.

how come your not having the beam etc powder coated? what type of paint will you be using?

Iain
04-09-10, 02:30 PM
Using POR15 paint. It's like a fancy Hammerite but especially for cars/chassis/etc. Applied to bare metal (after using their marine clean and metal-ready) and apparently provides very good protection against rust.

Just thought it'd be cheaper than getting them powdercoated, and it won't feel quite as bad if I end up having to mod the beam/lower arms/etc later on.

Iain
07-09-10, 08:12 PM
All my bits are painted up nice

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/028.JPG

Think there was some blast media hiding somewhere as some of it is quite bitty, but it's good enough for suspension and mounts:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/029.JPG

Beam:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/030.JPG

Poly bushes in the lower arms:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/031.JPG

Push the pin half way in by hand:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/032.JPG

And finish it up in a vice (probably didn't even need to tho tbh, proper easy to fit!):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/033.JPG

All done:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/034.JPG

Got my inner CV spacers from Quaife, think they slot on to the CV as follows:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/035.JPG

Put them in the diff, tbh there's still about a 1mm gap/amount of play. Found if I bend out the inner CV clip a bit it holds it a little more stable so may get some new clips and see how it is then:

It's on my list of potential future improvements, not too expensive or difficult to do in the future.

what did quaife say in the end about the spacers?

Sales guys hadn't heard of the issue, but they passed my photos on to the technical guys who fit them in their workshop. Rang back the next day and they had known what I was talking about and had me two spacers in a packet ready to post to me. He said I must have a very early box for this to be a problem (although not sure how that's possible as the CVs won't be from the same car?!)

They're designed to be a weak link though, should he contact a curb say. Then again, when you have a triangulated cage the car is never gonna get off easy I suppose.

Looking great Iain. From what you were bitching about on MSN I thought it would be obvious they were 'bitty'. lol

Gave the box internals another quick rinse down and dried them with the air gun:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/037.JPG

Refitted the magnet in the bottom of the casing (where I found my chipped cog bit):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/038.JPG

Easier to fit the casing to the internals rather than vice versa, so plonked the box on:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/039.JPG

Nice clean selector turret fitted:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/040.JPG

Now on to the diff, I was a bit worried about this but once I got stuck in it was fine!

Diff mount, new bearing race and shaft seal:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/041.JPG

Here's what was stamped on the bearing race, if anyone's after new diff bearings for an F20 (not sure if Timken bearings are any good but time will tell):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/042.JPG

Used the old race to fit the new ones and the seals, bish bosh bash:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/043.JPG

32mm socket sat nicely on the middle part of the bearing, and tapped it on to the diff:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/044.JPG

Part number for a new F20 speedo drive, cost approx £11 trade:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/045.JPG

Soaked it in hot water and it snapped on nice and easy, all done. Just need to torque the crownwheel bolts up with some loctite and it's good to go in:

Good work, should it not be oiled or greased when you re build it?

AlexW
12-09-10, 10:02 PM
What i was thinking about benn, surly it would be better to at least put some oil around it, as when you first start it with the input shaft spinning, no oil will be moving around.

Iain
12-09-10, 11:04 PM
When I fill it up for the first time I'll remove the selector turret and pour the oil in all over the gears so probably be ok?

TBH I've found hardly any info on gearboxes, and my Haynes just says "take it to an expert", so just guessing most of it :d

And slapped them on, still just enough clearance on the inner arches so all good:

Temporary ride height (as my jack wouldn't go high enough to get the car off the axle stands at the height I wanted it at lol:

Quick rack fitted:

Nice work, Iain, its nice putting clean things on a clean car, you come in with cleanish hands for once!

Looking good mate!

Yeah it's great, underside is filthy already tho, who thought white underneath would be a good idea lol

It's all good fun until something goes wrong, but so far so good everything is going smoothly.

Ill hazard a guess from Marks & Spencers.

On second thoughts, perhaps a fasteners/fixing/bolt shop.

Iain

I just bought loads of M6, 8, 10 and 12 nuts, washers and bolts in a variety of lengths. All 8.8 tensile so okay for use on suspension & anywhere else. Saves scrapping around cleaning up old crusty bolts!

Edit: Ordered about 10 of each length from here: http://www.fwb.co.uk/mall/departmentpage.cfm/FWBGroup/70417/1/1

I merely asked because they are NLS at Vauxhall and stainless ones will not be up to the job.

Obviously he didn't get them from marks and Spencer you :tosser:

Iain

Marks and Spencers lol They're just 8.8 tensile 'bright zinc plated' bolts.

Good slow progress mate! lmao

If you havn't done already while you've got it all up in the air - drill a hole in the back plate near the adjuster enough to fit a flat blade screw driver in. Makes it easier to adjust up the brakes.

Iain
04-10-10, 07:16 PM
Slow progress  I'm trying honest lol

I thought they were auto-adjustment? They're off a '91 car. Wish you'd said before as it's back on the floor, but I'll look at that next time it's up.

Plonked the EPAS steering column and wiring loom in place:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/088.JPG

Two M10 bolts holding it in place (I can remake/redrill the part between the bracket and the column to alter height and location of the column):

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/089.JPG

Double jointed bit aids in straightening it up slightly:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/090.JPG

Got my loom temporarily in the bay too:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/091.JPG

Still thinking of making the front half of the loom unpluggable inside the car as discussed a few pages back.

Iain

More slow progress, got the brake lines in the front, just need to find some rubber to cover them for the clips (any suggestions?) and some fittings to hold them against the bulkhead (again, any suggestions?)

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/092.JPG

Plug
06-10-10, 10:17 PM
could you not use P-clips with the rubber already on the clips?

Iain
06-10-10, 10:24 PM
Could do, there's some lugs on the bulkhead already (seen in the pic) I was hoping to use, like some screw on plastic clips?

I need to put some rubber around it where it goes under the folding tabs too (in the arches)

AlexW
06-10-10, 10:32 PM
P clips as plug said, then use plastic nuts from like a corsa B header tank/map sensor.

You can get rubber strips from ebay and the like for the fold bits. Lenghs of it i mean, like 1inch wide.

Mike
06-10-10, 10:57 PM
Rubber lined P Clip's. Job done.

Or even rivet on saddle's.

The Simps
07-10-10, 01:38 AM
Find a water hose the same bore and use that for the folding tabs cutting it open and sliding it over.

Prey
07-10-10, 08:59 AM
why not just get some of the standard screw on brake pipe clips that go onto the studs you're talking about? or is that me being stupid?

nova ian
07-10-10, 09:14 AM
As others have already said Iain, rubber lined P-Clips is where it's at!!

and rivet them on, non of this pikey self tapper malarky!

Iain
07-10-10, 03:38 PM
why not just get some of the standard screw on brake pipe clips that go onto the studs you're talking about? or is that me being stupid?

Yeah thats what I was thinking of I think lol Some double plastic clip for holding them in place. Will hunt the scrappy for some!

And I'll order some P-clips for use down the exhaust tunnel for the internal lines.

Cheers Simps I'll do that, will have to cut them down one side to fit them thuogh as they probably won't slide over the connectors :thumb:

Iain
09-10-10, 05:39 PM
Waxoyled inside my doors, rear quarters, chassis legs etc with 'clear' (yellow) waxoyl. Not sure if I did it right as it doesn't look all that great, but thinning it down by standing it in hot water really helped it's application (followed by using a brush to smooth it out after spraying it on)

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/094.JPG

More electrics in place:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/095.JPG

And we have power! Just wanted to check everything was working before cutting the loom to extend it to the front. All lights are working so good to start chopping and soldering...

Looks good mate but get more Waxoil in there lol Get it so it's dripping out onto the floor (That's the way we do it at work, that's when you know you have enough)

Iain
09-10-10, 05:41 PM
It didn't drip  Just went on and "stuck" in a matt/lumpy kinda way.

vaughanmc
09-10-10, 05:42 PM
Aye I know what you mean...Maybe needs to be a bit thinner...?

Should protect it anyway though fella :)

Iain
09-10-10, 05:43 PM
Was out of a spray can so no way of adding thinners. The application of it wasn't anything like what I expected tbh (I may have done it wrong tho!)

vaughanmc
09-10-10, 05:45 PM
Nah you won't have mate, maybe just the way it is...There's all different kinds of cavity wax like but just generalised as 'Waxoil'

Iain

Following on from the last picture, I have now chopped and soldered my loom to the new front half (the engine bay side of another Nova loom). Looks quite professional IMO lol

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/097.JPG

Also a trip to Vehicle Wiring Products to get my battery relocation stuff, just need a battery tray now:

Scott:

Just fancied chopping them off to see if it saved any weight on the front, and the fact they get very rusty due to dirt being kicked up and held in them. Think it saved half a kg :eek:lol

Yesterday's progress. Nova meets engine:

Off the stand and on with the flywheel with ARP bolts (torqued using SBD's instructions, loctite on the threads and graphite grease under the heads):
