Wooooooww I have seen the whole post, I have seen videos of the trackday, I can only say that this project is a reference for me, and not just by starting with the same car, a great job and classy, but if I let ask, do the welds are holding up?

As solutions to the fuel? with an external fuel pump or with that of a nova GTE? I do not understand that.

trackdaynova
05-12-08, 11:20 PM
The solution to the problem of fuel starvation, was to have a fuel swirl pot.

This if fed by the external low pressure, high voltage fuel pump (the FACET redtop)

From the swirl pot, I have a high pressure fuel pump from a Ford Sierra Cosworth, feeding the engine.

Hope this helps?

Dar

Just to add a bit more flesh (If I may)

The problem of fuel starvation occurs when the cornering speed of the car is fast enough to pull the fuel in the tank way form the outlet long enough for the fuel pump to start pumping air.

This results in the engine losing power for a few seconds as you exit the bend (usually). Not ideal!

So the solution is to have a swirl pot, which is simply a tiny external fuel tank. The swirl pot is fed by a low pressure pump from the main tank (it has a return). The engine takes its fuel from the swirl pot and returns any unused fuel to the swirl pot. So you have two fuel loops.

Since the swirl pot is tall and thin the fuel cannot slosh away from the feed. So when the main tank is pumping air you still have a head of fuel to feed the engine.

Count Vaux Alot

well said!

zeifer33
05-12-08, 11:52 PM
So, what is needed are two fuel pumps, a low pressure and high pressure, with a main tank and a secondary, sending fuel from the primary to secondary through the low-pressure pump and engine for the secondary amid the high-pressure, it is right? Well, as you say you use the fuel pump of the ford to high pressure and low? that of a GTE?

Could this be an issue in my turbo diesel nova?
When ever it gets to about 1/4 tank it starts to cut out on heavy cornering or acceleration, i thought it might be either crud or water in the tank but could it be this? So long as i keep the tank topped up it doesn't happen.

Well, as you say you use the fuel pump of the ford to high pressure and low? that of a GTE?

The supply pump doesnt need to be low pressure, you can use a high pressure pump if you have one lying around. The fuel wont actually get under pressure itself as there will be no fuel reg in the first circuit. So in theory, if you are converting a car that currently has a carb engine, you dont need to change the fuel lines for high pressure injection ones.

Basically, first circuit is from tank, into pump, into optional filter, into swirlpot, back to tank. Second circuit is from swirl pot, through high presure pump, through filter, into inj rail, through the fuel reg and back to the swirl pot. Some swirl pots (like mine) have only 3 nozzles, so the returns need joining in a t piece, but normally there are 4 nozzles.

Zeifer, I only use a Cossie external pump due to the fuel pressue I'm running, a Nova GTE/ GSi & LET pump kept giving up.

I run 4.5bar / 62psi, which is quite high :thumb:

62 psi??? why is that?

im running throttle bodies and only on 50psi ?

It depends on the injectors/map your using.
You could run 3bar if you want, if the injectors were suitalbe sized and the ecu mapped to suit.
V. high pressure usually means your using quite small injectors, ehence needing more pressure to deliver more fuel

Jonlem
06-12-08, 11:26 PM
Plumbing should be done like the diagram below, not everyone chooses to run a filter before the high pressure pump though.

I see, i didnt even think the small peco injectors wanted that sorta pressure, cheers for the explanation :thumb:

Bodies on... ish
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q161/neocapture/nc0490.jpg

linkage bracket fouls on the alternator, which doesn't allow inlet to sit against head so gotta think of a new way of mounting it - strange?!
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q161/neocapture/nc0491.jpg

Came in after that, due to loads of faffing, will sort it out - remove rest of old loom, install new loom and ecu - and get her ticking over tomorrow with any luck :)

Decided to break the car, seeing as I’ve done all I’ve wanted with it.

It was first MOT’d in August 2007, and a lot has changed in a short amount of time, and developed far further than ever imagined, which I don’t regret as it’s been fun.

Those that know me will know that I enjoy the build preparation of a car, more than the actual drive, although the driving is phenominal, once the build is complete, I’d sooner start over again.

Been through old videos, in the 15months its been MOT’d, its had 13 outings on track which are:

07-10-07 – Donington Park
08-12-07 – Donington Park
09-02-08 – Bedford Autodrome
03-03-08 – Rockingham Raceway
19-04-08 – Castle Combe
11-05-08 – Curborough Sprint
15-06-08 – Curborough Sprint
30-05-08 – Donington Park
27-07-08 – Ten of the Best 2008, Elvington
06-09-08 – Castle Combe
26-10-08 – Cadwell Park
09-11-08 – Donington Park
14-12-08 – Donington Park

One thing I will say – none of the above would have been capable without the constant help & support from PNGers and moreso, my fantastic pit crew (who turned up at trackdays no matter how far away they were, for nothing but to help out! You know who you are)… although next year I am swapping jobs and I will be pit crew for nova ian, Count Vaux Alot & LiquidPug, as I’ll be pestering them to get theirs done.

Thanks to all those that shown an interest to this build and this thread – its been an awesome journey! :) :thumb:

Best of luck with whatever you do next mate.

Why the change in job when you have one though ? I know you said its slowed down but has something changed since our chat yesterday ?

Typically you may not of chosen a great time to break it as everyone is hanging onto what money they have, it'll sell but not for what you might want, either way not doing so many trackdays should save you a fortune !

trackdaynova

....... I will be pit crew for nova ian, Count Vaux Alot & LiquidPug, as I’ll be pestering them to get theirs done.

Thanks to all those that shown an interest to this build and this thread – its been an awesome journey! :) :thumb:

Olly

Come join the dark side Olz - go French and get a proper track car :p

Was a pleasure helping throughout the build, learnt lots of useful stuff along the way (like where a starter motor is actually situated :wtf:) and saved myself some money buying the 'correct' parts for mine first time round, based on your development experience.

R.I.P(ieces) to the 'little Nova' - good to know that the parts will go on to benefit so many other PNGers.

........so when does 'My Saloon 16v Project' start :thumb:lol

Ste - no probs, we've all learnt lots - its been wicked fun, I hope loads of people have found this thread useful, and it will hopefully continue with people using it as a reference guide!

Shame olly but all good things come to a end.

I loved the build 100% more than the drive of my nova. Building it and engineering it was miles more fun than using it.

It's certainly been used for what it was built for - just turned into a rather expensive toy in the end

I know how you feellol . I thought however that the news that you were breaking it was a wind up to start off with. Apparently not so.

For what its worth I've enjoyed your input on site and this thread in particular. Its a shame to break it but then a true track weapon is really only ever one slippery corner away from the breakers yard!:D Its certainly given everyone on site a good idea of how much fun you can have with a nova.
Top respect to you and good luck with whatever new stuff you get into:thumb:

23-12-08, 10:57 PM
Thanks for the lovely comments all.

Benn - alloy battery tray already sold to the man above pal :thumb:

ste193 - as Jay said, the cage is already sold mate.

CP - a few thought it was a wind up, but it never was, I actually knew what I was breaking it before that last trackday, which is why it was so important to me personally to have all my friends there, and fellow PNGers so we could all have one last bash and a cracking time on track, to which we did :)

I will be back, in the future, but I can promise that I have nothing up my sleeve, nothing in the pipeline, not even a smallblock lol

Ste & Jay, reason for breaking it is as what CP has quoted really. It started out and was supposed to be an intentional 'cheap trackday car', and its just snowballed into some that isn't cheap anymore.

For what I have broken it for, I can buy an Mitsu Evo 7 (for instance)- which, to have that kinda money wrapped up in a car, which affectively, is a toy - is alot of money.

Yes it got used alot, a damn site more than most, but it was still only once, or twice a month.

So trackdays are what, £200-£300 a time, plus fuel (2x tanks) so another £100... so there is £3-400 per day, plus food, spares, breakages (CVs lol), tyres, brakes etc... Those 13 days I've done is around £4.5k - £6k, all in a car worth more than that itself - so turned into a rather expensive hobby/ addiction lol

Like CP & their gang, I've been doing trackdays 8 years now, and this year i've done plenty... whilst they've been good - none of them have been as good as that last one we just had... so its always been me, on me tod (other than my great pit crew, which i wouldnt have been able to do it without)

So in short (Jim - lol), I just want a bit of time out, away from my own car, I will still be on the scene, helping my mates out like they have done for all me all year.

Will i miss it? Of course I will, I've only had 12 months or little over, its come along way, very quickly, and I've said it before but I prefer and enjoy the build of a car, more than i do the final product... so I will be back one day, but with the same again, nothing extravegant...

And thats it... expect more pics next Saturday when Me, Ernie & nova ian will be ripping the rest of the car to bits all drinking Cider with Santa hats on :D
