26-10-08, 07:08 PM
Oh dear. Have you made contact with something?!
dhdev (Oli)
26-10-08, 07:11 PM
Uh oh! :(
trackdaynova
26-10-08, 07:19 PM
it's ok lads, no one was hurt which is the main thing.
we were top of 5th gear heading up Park Straight, heading into Park Corner, hit the brakes locked up, let off, jammed it down a gear, locked up, car stalled, pulled handbrake up to kill some MPH's but still hit.
i don't really need any of the above, just the door really, just gonna roll with how it sits, its all cosmetic :thumb:
meanwhile, here are some pre-contact pictures looking rather good after i spent ages polishing up the wings, and heatgunning the 'one-piece' bumper lol

"how low can you go? can you go down low". car handled much better than it ever has done before

looks stunning looking rather low aswell glad the mods you have done have made it better
The main thing is your ok mate !
Car looks good in the pics though, was Specky there today ? how did he get on !
trackdaynova
26-10-08, 07:25 PM
Specky was there, he was loving it - gonna be building himself a track car after today... proper hyped up he was!
Spent most of the day chatting actually, as we were parked up next to each other :thumb:
Good stuff, glad to see he is using his car for other things even if its a bit mental for trackwork. VERY suprised he passes noise test though lol

26-10-08, 07:38 PM
Sorry, mislead you - he was there in his MG ZS company car, not the Tigra

26-10-08, 07:38 PM
Panel damage is not bad really, all the matters is you did not injure yourself.
Sorry to hear about your off Olly, good news that no harm(apart from panels) was done though.
Looks cool as fook in those pics.
trackdaynova
26-10-08, 07:47 PM
aye - tis what happens when you push hard :D lol
krobinson
26-10-08, 07:51 PM
Main thing is that your ok, and second is that you were driving it how it should be driven. These things happen unfortunatly :(
Part's should be easy sourced. Get some nice Lightweight rust door's, depending on how rotten they are, they could be lighter than fiberglass!! Plus you can then enter rat look show's lol.
A couple of panel damage pics.............

Well what can I say, very eventful day and shocking weather even at 4am this morning when I got up! (On a church day!!lol )
First of all want to say big thanks for the invite today and the passenger ride, had a wicked day (and nice to meet Countvauxalot too:thumb: )
As for the mishap, here are the results, wet track, fast entry and grass with a nova thrown into the equation equals

Spoke to Specky earlier, he told me you'd had an off - glad the damage doesn't appear to be anything more than panels! Deffo not touched the suspension?
Give me a shout if you need any gen bits from Vaux... :)
General Baxter
26-10-08, 08:08 PM
loon rear arches ? lol
trackdaynova
26-10-08, 08:11 PM
deffo not touched anything but panels fortunately :thumb:, thinking about it pulling the handbrake up was the best desicion I made, as it sent the car sideways, which caused cosmetic damage only
front on would have been worse, as would front corner, with bonnet, grill, tiebars, bumper, rad, suspension, chassis etc
Doesn't look so bad after the panels were 'persuaded' to pop back out lol
Chin-up Olz - next development opportunity ;)
Hmmm persuaded being a reebok classic trainer and a big metal bar!!!!!!!lol

Hmmm persuaded being a reebok classic trainer and a big metal bar!!!!!!! That would be a 'motorsport' reebox trainer and technical adjusting 'motor sport' metal bar lol
Also olz, thanks for the invite to cadwell today.Shame about the nova but its all fixable.Oh and thanks for the ride too!

My god - just thought Olz, is the fuse holder ok??
trackdaynova
26-10-08, 08:34 PM
I'm just gonna clean them up as much as possible, and remove the rubber :thumb:
As for leaving it looking battered, as cool and hard as it looks, I don't want it looking like a banger car...
Ste - fuseholder is still going strong :thumb: ps: you shoulda white-walled main rainsports woulda looked great in the pics!
trackdaynova
26-10-08, 08:38 PM
oh I didn't mention lol
after hitting the tyre wall, and coming into the pits etc...
i still battered what we could back out as said on previous page and went out on track and gave it death again :D :thumb: lol

Tough luck mate. Sure it wont stop you for long.
I never really got to grips with Cadwell, probably the only circuit I don't feel that I've nailed. I didn't like the coppice section up into 'Charlies' as it was fairly blind. I went straight on at Mansfield and had to turn round in front of the marshalls, steep hill that one. Was wet and greasy when I went there too.
lol lol lol
+rep :thumb:

Fair play for going out again. Fibreglass doors have got to be on the cards, surely?
odear olly.At lease your both ok and the car can be fixed.
I will get a wing mirror to you asap mate.

27-10-08, 09:06 AM
Firstly mate i have to say a massive massive thanks for asking both Danni and I along and having use to stay :D we had a great day all considered and i can't give you enough respect for your abilities on track you animal!
I loved the passenger ride so much that i am getting a track car for sure now as i can't help but want to join in! :thumb:
As for the off it was nothing but bad luck but in your usual style you got back out there and gave it large despite what happened...most would have gone home with their tail between their legs well in!
Hope to do it again soon xx

Its worse than crack like that! lol
Shame about the off Olly but the way I look at it is you come out of all the best fights with the coolest scars. Much like top nights out and monster hangovers!
I plan to get as many battle scars on mine as possibly! lol
Good job on the handbraking, good natural reactions to save the car :thumb:
Oh, what did you decide to do about your beam in the end?
trackdaynova
27-10-08, 10:29 AM
Hey all, just got up - thank fook I decided to book the day off today lol
Thanks for all the nice comments, we all get it wrong from time to time, just my over-eagerness not to use the brakes and be on it hard got me this time!
Gonna go through videos later and see whats what.
No probs to you all regarding enjoying the day, and all the passenger rides.
Whilst I'm thinking about it I must say a massive thanks to: Michelle, James, Danni, Ian, Kat, Steve, Claire, Matt & Rob, I'm glad I managed to take all but two of you out for a good blat around the track... for not only travelling a fair trek to Cadwell, but for helping me out with bits that needed doing too. Tyre changes etc.
Simps - not sure on the beam, gonna whip the car out the garage in a minute, take some more pics of the damage, and get cracking on it so its ready for Donny in two weeks time.
The beam etc will wait until after Donny, as then I'll have a good 6 weeks again until my next trackday :thumb:
Oh, lastly, I must say that Cadwell is my new favourite track, over Donny too - so I'll be booking a fair few days up there early Jan & Feb :thumb:
I will save a beam for you aswell once stripped the Antbes down mate just incase.

Thanks once again for kind words :)
Just read back through the passed couple of pages - and missed a couple of peoples comments...
Fibreglass doors are even more of a no no now, then ever - I'm soooo glad I didn't spend the money on fitting that wide kit, so it's going to stay the same as any other Nova, a little dint here and there :thumb:
Bugger Olz, sorry to see the damage. Glad yourself & passenger are ok though.
Guess you've found the limit on that corner now, eh? :-P
Glad your not down about it as well, hopefully you'll be thrashing around Donny in 2 weeks time trouble free, I think you've earnt yourself a problem free day!
trackdaynova
27-10-08, 12:38 PM
Cheers Ben, on a wet and greasy day, yes I now know my limits, however I will go back in the dry next year! :D

Never let it be said Nova's arent tough cars.
Just removing those tyre marks has made a huge difference. Good work

whats the story behind the motorsport spec gaffa tape on the perspex?
trackdaynova
27-10-08, 02:33 PM
lol the polycarbonate window kept dropping down after impact, so we had to tape it up by wrapping tape through the square hole, and then up and over the door.
but it was cold wet and windy on the way home, and Michelle wanted the window shut lol
motorsport spec gaffa ftw lol

It is wierd tho, the car is obviously slammed but doesn't look low when you look at the bumpers/sills to ground. I was looking at mine in the same way the last night.
Maybe time to egt the filler and fibreglass out Olly?
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q129/bikkjaa/P9050198.jpg
trackdaynova
27-10-08, 04:01 PM
lol @ that.
I never look at it 'bodywork to ground', i always go by 'wheel in arch' lol
Obviously a car with GTE bumpers and sideskirts will always appear to be lower :)
BRoadGhost
27-10-08, 04:12 PM
Idd people should be looking at the hub nuts in relation to the body for the best impression of "lowness".
All these kitted heaps limit themselves in the bodywork they add, not that the masses can take it to the next stage anyways…
t45_ste
27-10-08, 04:29 PM

Cheers Karl, it'll be good to see you, however unfortunately the weather definately isn't on our side lol
Yup, certainly was our Ring trip in Sept 2005
Been out for a bit of play tonight the the performance box, and my maximum longitudinal acceleration, was 0.94G and deceleration was 0.71G bearing in mind I was on wet public roads I have nothing to compare it to but sounds alright lol
I do have the lateral acceleration information but I've not figured out how to interpret that yet. Looking forward to seeing some figures from Donington :)
A graph, just because :D
SPEED & LONGITUDINAL ACCELERATION vs TIME

Christ, you hit 52mph in first!? I'm guessing that not even flatout?
Impressive kit none the less
trackdaynova
07-11-08, 06:26 PM
nah, not flat out, as it was raining at the time, so the wheels we spinning :( and beacuse its GPS based, its strictly on the cars movements. you can tell as it took me nearly 10 seconds to get there lol
1st gear should travel to 64mph with full traction and some slicks so it doesn't brake traction in the dry :thumb:
So my 0-60mph speed won't be fantastic due to the long first, but then it'll help not having to change gear to get there... swings & roundabouts really :)

Went to get my tracking checked today after my detour @ Cadwell Park, good news to find that the settings were all identical to what we set them to last time I was there.
Bad news is that when I rolled up to the place, I had to drive up a kerb head on as a car was in the way of the flat piece, and I walloped my manifold as that got to the kerb before my wheels did... doh!
Mahoooosive dent in one of my primaries on my manifold which highly annoyed me, so I'll cut a section out and re-weld a part of tubular over it :(
Not before Donny tho, I'll do that when I don't have any time limits lol

Is that a racelogic perf box? Nice bit of kit! The 0.94g accel sounds optimistic to me!
I tried some quick starts in my nova with the long first and had a lot of clutch slip, I was probably not giving it enough revs/sharp enough drop of the clutch though.

If you have time and can be bothered to remove the manifold from the car, a neater solution may be to drill a whole from behind the dent and use a punch to knock the dent out, then just plug weld the little hole.

Karl you are certainly correct, just been looking through the Performance Box data, and my fastest lap from yesterday was indeed 1m 28, followed by several 1m30s.
Nothing ground breaking by any stretch of the imagination, but for the conditions it was - I'm confident I could smash my previous personal best when the weather is good, and I can remain on my 888s, or even Michelins!

lol I like to put a bit of effort in :p
[Top Gear]Meanwhile[/Top Gear], been playing with the PBox software, and analysing my laps and speeds. I was pulling a G lateral on most corners which is good news considering it was wet, and not alot of traction.
So a session consisting of 7 laps including a warm up, and cool down looked like this on the data logger / gps
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q161/neocapture/nc1199.jpg
Here are the main 5 fast'ish laps, you can see the consistancy throughout the corners & the speed
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q161/neocapture/nc1200.jpg
My fastest lap of yesterday, 88secs as you can see on the X axis, and the Speed in MPH on the Y axis, shows that my top speed down Starkies is 114.5mph, which isn't particulary fast, in the dry we touch 128mph ish but I was obviously braking much much sooner for Goddards, than I usually would.
Interesting stuff, none the less :)

w000t, got hold of Xtreme again to get their photography set from the day, and I'm mega impressed considering just how miserable it was.
also even happier with the stance of my car on the silver tigra wheels and the 888s, considering I don't particulary like the look of the wheels
uber low low throughout the corners prior to my CV going bang...
here are some pics :)
Bottom of the Craners, hardly any lean on the car whatsoever

Exitting Goddards Chicane, wheel up but still no lean

Yeah, 'another one bites the dust' lol
Doesn't help the fact I'm still on my 1.2 shafts, and outer CVs, with 1.6 Cav inners
Maybe a big equal length shaft/ big hub/ big CV upgrade may be in order, however the equal lengthness won't aid my passenger side angle, it will only hinder and make the drivers side more agressive angle tbh
Great pics Olly, looks decent sitting low on the pentalines aswell!:thumb:

As Simon said, im considering taking the engine out and doing a little bit more detailing in the bay, like welding up those annoying little srew hole that will never be used again and to get the engine spec a little better.

What manifold are you using? Because i'm thinking of getting an ashley exhaust like yours. I'm using a standard c20xe manifold and was wondering if i'll need to change the lengh of the exhaust aswell as the angle? Where did you get yours from? Hope you don't mind all the question. Nice project by the way, like the work that gone into it.

17-11-08, 11:44 PM
Mine certainly is Ashley :thumb:
However mine isn't off the shelf, it was a custom job that John did for me, with larger primaries and secondaries :thumb:
for the bonnet........ what about a trim panel clip and holder.drill the holder into the front cross piece of the body and f/g the trim clip into the underside of the bonnet.put a washer on aswell to make the f/g a bit easier to do.Should do the job.
trackdaynova
18-11-08, 08:10 PM
Que? lol
get a trim panel clip and holder
fibre glass the clip into the underneath of the bonnet(using a washer with it to strengthen the job)
drill a small hole in the cross member across the front of the car(between the headlights) and put holder into it(maybe a bit of glue too!)
close bonnet and clip will engage into said holder and hold the bonnet down
;)
one of these or similar with a mahoosive washer on to get a good solid fix on the underside of the bonnet
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q306/m17tty/clip.jpg
and a hole drilled into the cross member for it to locate and clip into.
OR even to clip into the existing hole left from the old bonnet catch
trackdaynova
18-11-08, 08:30 PM
I'm thinking that maybe wouldn't be up to the job? I understand the concept though :thumb:
Not looked at the car since last Donny day, so I must roll it out at some point and have a look at what needs to be done :)

Gonna cut me a new rear screen out and rivet it in, seen a trackcar with self tappers holding the rear windows in and looked utter gash, lovely sharp screws facing every which way towards you inside the car lol

That seems excessive/unnecessary, why bother riveting a mount, just so that you can then use another type of fastener to mount the window :tard: Only worth doing if the window needs to be removable IMO.
I think the rear window on the silver nova looks perfect, coupled with a bead of sealant would be my choice, and may well actually be carried out on mine!

yeah I agree Oli, does seem a little over manufactuered. I wouldn't need the windows to be removable, so wouldn't want riv-nuts and bolted in, nor would I want pikey self tappers... so rivets are the way forward :thumb:
Bond it in. Windscreen bonder, job jobbed.
It has to run some sort of sealer or you will have water running in everywhere when it rains lol
They won't fall out if you use windscreen bonder though

Agreed, rivets will only let water in.

That may well be the case, we can only wait and see. Its each to their own really as everyone has their problem stories and preferences.
I haven't ever had any issues with my snap on tools but thats not to say they are great or you shouldn't buy from else were.
Do machine mart offer life on their stuff? As £99 isn't the same as the 300 odd for the snap on gun but once it has broken 'many times' surely you would have been better off with the snap on one in the first place? Also bearing in mind Olly didn't pay top dollar for his.....

How many of you have to stand on the end of it when its giving out 720nm lol?
trackdaynova

Sorry I don't believe I'm sitting here explaining my reasons for buying a Snap-On tool lol
Other than the fact the internals on a Snap-On wrench are metal, and those of lesser quality are nylon and plastic which wear and break easily with no warrenty...
Aside from the quality, the £89.99 Machine Mart one goes up to a staggered max of 200nm of torque, and some of the eBay ones are 130nm.
This Snap-On one has 720nm total torque, so there is nothing it won't shift.
Not just for wheel bolts, but for castle nuts etc, anything really.

Very true its is each to there own, glad you've not had any probs with yours.
I dont think mm does a life on there no, but if it doesnt brake 3/4 times you wont need that.. My old boss has two, one 12v and one 14v first things the broke when there battrey connections, then the motor in one and so on.
Yeah they lead a hard life, but its that they brake quite easyly that always annoyed me if you get me.
Its good tho if you got it cheap.
