There were other more wallet friendly options Niek but the SADEV reputation is legendary
Once bitten twice shy and all that, my Dad said to buy the best you can afford and if you can't afford the best, sell a kidney.
Just a shame it's 16 weeks lead time. Puts us into April 2022 before we even receive the box.
Although to be fair I'm so busy with work I wouldn't be out in the car anyway.
Just a shame quaife took so long to decide that they couldn't do anything with the old box and give you a refund, could have been sorted weeks ago. How long has it been since they've had it?
Yeah this is probably the only part that pissed me off.
They had the box on 11th of October and I'm fairly sure they knew within a few days it was fucked.
But it's done now, money arrived back in my account this week, SADEV ordered, move on!!
Atleast now I'll have ratios that work with the car.
And SWR Motorsport the UK Sadev dealer have been superb so far.
Team Shonky trackday at Brands Hatch in March, you in?..... Oh wait.

To be honest, i have heard a lot of this recently through the grape vine, doing what i do i hear all sorts.
Worked on Sadev stuff for a number of years and for the price, the quality is great, does not compare to newer quaife stuff at all.
I wish id kept my sadev but times move on.
Good shout with the 82, its a great model and should be bombproof for what you are using it for, fit and forget.
As you say, once bitten, twice shy or buy cheap, buy twice! I'm sure once fitted you'll be thankful for the lack of stress and lovely nature of the new one
Looking forward to how you get on with the chassis leg and the mount you make, as said above HH do a mount for the 75 but im Sure Ben will do a better job anyways!
Look forward to seeing how you get on with it and the installlol
Thanks Boff, at the time the SADEV was a step too far but I've realised it's got to be that now.
Like you say, should be fit and forget, just need to ask them what sort of servicing/inspection they would recommend and then stay on top of that.
In other news, new welder arrived and setup, will be test firing some bits tomorrow.

It's lovely to use, you can really tell the difference with a better machine.
Need to work on my torch control but that should come with practice

Nice sets them i use the r tech tig320ext at home for bits and pieces. Mint for 240v sets.
What wire size are you running for mig
Sent from my MAR-LX1B using Tapatalk
Running 0.8 wire but using a 1mm nozzle as I forgot to order the 0.8's!! (They're arriving today)
I need to slow down a little bit and get better penetration (story of my life)
I tested the TIG out but can't seem to get it to work, think the pedal is faulty. Some investigation needed

Get rid of the pedal and fit a push button on the torch mate. Try upping the juice another 10 amps and go same speed that weld doesnt look bad to be fair just looks like juice wasnt quite high enough thats why i asked what wire it was. Looks a better weld than most of the coded welder iv worked with can do [emoji1787][emoji1787]

Here's what confuses me about the R-tek, it shows the settings as volts on the welder not amps, once you start welding it shifts to amps but obviously you're welding so not looking at the machine!!
As for the TIG I need to test it with the torch button to see if it's the pedal causing the issue, it's like it starts the arc but then doesn't ramp the amps up, back down the workshop this evening so I'll have a little play.
Yeah it's things I need to check Colin, I'm guilty of just getting annoyed with it the other day instead of being practical and checking stuff!! Haha

House, which model of R-Tech welder is that one you got?
My trusty old MiG is playing up, and I'm considering a new machine.

Just realised I can see the model number MIG-MTS-255-HF on the front.

Nothing but good things to say about it Colin, really does weld well.
I was having some problems with my trusty (and rather old) Clarke 190 MiG, but with some fiddling with the wire tension feed and getting a much heavier duty earth cable and clamp it seems to be all back to good again..
I've also got an R-Tech AC/DC TiG welder (brand new in the box!) which I've had for years and never got around to using.
So if my Clarke MiG one had been dead, I was thinking about upgrading to an all in one unit like yours. Although it then dawned on me that yours is DC only (I think), so wouldn't be suitable for aluminium.
The only all in one AC/DC TiG with MiG welder I found was the Parweld unit at about ?1600. So hopefully I can carry on as before now, without spending any money!

That's interesting, thanks. I had no idea you could do that.
R-Tech don't seem to list the wire feed unit separately on their website, only as a package with a 450 amp MiG
The AC TIG is a machine I want to add in the future to the workshop but for now I cause enough trouble with the DC on mild steel!!
The R-tech MIG that I have is a really good machine though, can really tell the difference in the step up from the old machine mart special I had before.
With that being said, I still need to learn how to use it all!!!

That's why I haven't had a go with my AC/DC TiG unit yet, I'm waiting on a friend of mine who's a pro-welder (ex Prodrive) to give me some tuition!
I'm not bad with a MiG, although that's very much easier than TiG of course
Got the TiG torch connections plugged in the right way round? (obvious I know, but.......)
After electrifying the bench and giving myself a bloody good bolt.
It turns out I had the earth and torch plugged in round the wrong way. Apparently the welder I've got runs in reverse bench clamp in + and torch in - for DC TIG.
I'm told the odd electric shock resets the system, that should be me nice and reset for a few years.

A small update, SADEV is on order, should be landing early April, 40% deposit paid and the other 60% is with a trusted person as we all know I can't be trusted with large sums of cash.

Does the lathe run a 3 phase motor? If so, is it hard or expensive to get 3 phase connected to your home/workshop in the UK?

Hey Niek,
The workshop was without power when I took it over as a barn, I had to pay for the UK power network people to make a connection to a box just inside our land and then run a cable the 110 metres to the barn!! You can see the green box behind the gate, this connects via a trench to the cable in the street.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220120/3b830303b623f681c1c89c30d6e527f8.jpg
This was around ?5,500 to have a 3-phase connection to the green box. However the cable up to the workshop is just single phase so all my stuff is single phase but I could upgrade to 3-phase in the future if need be. Luckily the land owners are solid so we spilt the power connection costs in half.
The lathe is about to get an upgrade to a VF drive so I can control the speed, if that works out I'll do the same to the mill as belt changes on the mill are a pain in the ass!!!
I am so jealous House
Don't be jealous mate!! Hahaha it's a mess!!!
Just bought 100 boxes from big dug cos I need it organised!!

Update.
Box delayed until June at the earliest due to supply chain issues. Upon reading the quote it actually says "delivery up to 12 months from order" however SWR are cool, they're lending me the dummy box to allow us to measure shafts and make mounts and get the lever in.
In the meantime I've just dropped a few k on the RS6 aiming for 800bhp new 100 cell cat down pipes, new larger intercoolers, plus all new suspension arms and some other bits. The engine has to come out to fix an oil leak from a vacuum pump, so may aswell upgrade it all while it's out.
Hoping the turbos are ok or it'll be another ?5k for those. But then it'll see 850bhp so win some loose some!!!

Hi house there is a company in clydebank glasgow that will sell you a invertor to run your mill and or laith that will convert your single phase to 3 phase you can contoll the speed my old boss built a workshp in his garage i can try to get details and a cumpany and phone number if you want.

Thanks mate, both the motors in the lathe and mill are single phase already, I've just bought an inverter kit and new motor to run the lathe, if that's a success I'll do the same for the mill.
Thanks for thinking of me though, I was looking at a 3-phase parts washer so might be useful to have some details if you've got them..

Rear mount is a direct fit to the old mount. The only issue we have is the shift rod points directly at the rack, however we may have a solution for that using the paddle shifter rocker, albeit modified to suit us.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220507/56ca7c704f11d53f80c0e74ab7786fcf.png
Minus the top link and extended down towards the diff, this would allow the shift rod to come out below the rack, which would work for us.
More updates to come as progress progresses.

Rocker looks really good, its going to change the direction though for the shifts, does that not bother you? Pushing forward to change up is really unnatural in a competition car....

It retains the same orientation mate, maybe hard to make out in the pics, try my best to explain.
Command shaft is the red arrow, ordinarily the shift rod would act directly into that from the lever (via a rose joint), so pushing the lever forward, drives the command shaft forward and vice versa.
By pivoting the extension above (green pivot) and attaching the shift rod below (yellow arrow) we're able to maintain the orientation, with a slightly lengthened throw, but that should be manageable.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220701/42310f1eb2243c8799a21cc9dbf9ab6a.jpg
Pic of the lever above, hinged on the floor of the car and the shift rod attaches above, maintaining the orientation.
You're 100% right though my RS6 is push forward for up and pull back for down when using the manual stick shifter and it's stupid!!! You gotta pull back for up and push forward for down!! It's just the way it is!!!
On other news, the box left France today, I have zero time between now and September to do anything so I delivered the car to Ben @ Hangar 30 this morning with the box coming from SWR next week and he's going to stick it all back together, I won't have driveshafts in time for VBOA as they're due first week of August but it'll be back together in a fashion and at the show!!

Snetterton and the first real test of the SADEV. Throttle stop on the pedal box had worked loose meaning we only had 70% throttle at the start of the day in the wet working it's way down to about 40% throttle by the end of the day, I didn't really notice until the last session as I've not driven the car in a year!! Anyway, all sorted now for Snetterton again on the 1/11/22.

Decidedly agricultural compared to this Colin, hoping for a full throttle day out on Tuesday at Snet again. Worried we're geared too short though as we were on the rev limiter on the back straight with limited throttle. We'll see

Freely admit my TIGing is not the best, I probably should have MIG'd it or tacked it and got Ben to do a proper job, as it is as soon as Ben has time this will be re-made by him properly.
But we've got the bush spun through 90 so it's acting in the same plane as the gearbox mount, also lifted the engine 2-3mm which we're hoping will move the alternator away from the chassis leg.
More this week, 4th engine mount, changing master cylinders, prep for Snet in the middle of June.

Got scared when I got to the workshop this morning and looked at it, reverted back to type and fired the MIG up!! Happier with that.

Nice welding,!
Nice welding,!
TIG was horrendous, MIG slightly better!!!
But we're back in action

My hulk muscles went OTT!!
Gotta get a whole new hose made up as they're crimped fittings!!!
But she doesn't look too bad in her old age

Think Automotive hooked me up with a new hose while I waited
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230519/121647f917000b3338f91b740d0a6d82.jpg
Also they gave me the torque figures for each size of fitting so I won't make that mistake again.
All fitted and back up and running.
Booked onto Snetterton 25th of this month for a little shake down and test. Hopefully good weather, forecast looks ok.

No idea if this will make a difference but it looks badass!!!
Board is temporary, I'll add some proper buffalo board when I decide if it makes a difference or not

Good work though. I need to get my project post updated.

Yes mate, get yourself down there!!! Summer won't be here forever!!
I'm at Brands on 5th June and also Snet on the 20th June.
I've entered the JSS at Blyton Park on 25th June to finally get a little taste of competitive running.
Well....that didn't go to plan

Holy shit! I wondered where that Piston came from in Thetford!
You've done a good job there mate. Was it going well before hand?
Sent from my SM-G980F using Tapatalk
Yeah mate all was well....I think the shitty Williams rods didn't like the 8350rpm!!!!
I'll dig the clip out tomorrow of it going bang but it literally just broke, didn't over rev (according to the logging data) something in the engine just broke.

Holy fuck. Must have been some bang!
It's so uneventful you wouldn't even believe it happened!! If it wasn't for the clouds of smoke pouring out the back I'd have thought it was just a misfire haha

Inspection window . had it snapped the pin out of the piston ?

I've not heard good things about the alloy blocks.....

We think the rod let go but equally it could have snapped out of the piston....I know both the piston and the rod are MIA!!! Nowhere to be found!!!
Maybe next time you won't build things on a tiny budget.

Ouch! That reminds me of my freshly rebuilt X16XE going bang whilst give it large around Silverstone. In my case it presumably was a spun bearing shell (aluminium instead of proper material) used by the place that built my engine. Expensive failures, these!
Verstuurd vanaf mijn SM-A505FN met Tapatalk
Ultimately we can't pinpoint the failure, it was either a piston broke, rod little end let go or valve dropped which led to the first two in succession.
I can't complain, it's suffered 4 years of abuse and I've never had it out for a freshen up.
New engine will require yearly top and tailing (depending on use)
And the moral of the story is, use proper components, I've got a steel Arrow crank, Steel Arrow rods and we'll be using Omega pistons and Rec valves, all solid properly made stuff.
Is this done yet
Won't be long mate, just making a few changes to the steering wheel

Oooo, there?s some nice bits there
Some expensive bits there Colin!! Hahaha
Got a Life Racing ECU going in it aswell which will serve as engine ECU and gearbox controller.
That are some very nice parts!

Won't be long and we'll be using them in anger I hope...

Things are getting real
We're also pretty confident that valve springs were to blame for the previous failure, the original valve springs, which I don't know the spec of, weren't capable of controlling the valves over 8000rpm and led to piston valve contact.
They were perfectly happy at 7800rpm but as soon as the limit went up they cried wolf and went on strike.

So close now.
Looking good, probably the cleanest install I’ve ever seen.

First minor adjustment.
We noticed on the dyno when shifting on WOT sparks appeared to come out of the alternator. Got the alternator out and upon closer investigation I found the pulley had been rubbing the chassis leg.

Got the pulley off and fired up the lathe to adjust the pulley, just machined the outer edge off it as it's not really needed

I think the final solution will be a 4th engine mount to stop the movement. I'll discuss this with Ben and see what we can come up with.
