Im very disappointed in this update. The comments on Iains thread led me to believe there would be an element of shonkiness and I cannot find it..

In seriousness, how does the fuel level sender unit fit onto the Nova tank for the new gauge?

Paul..

Paul, as you well know and Iain is fond of telling everyone, everything I do is half arsed and shonky to some degree!!!

I'm running a tank in the boot in this shell so it's an aftermarket float sender.

I'll be changing all this in the new shell, back to standard location as it's a lot better

Full time Shonky coming up!!

Home early from work, wife out in London tonight, few hours in the garage.

I had one of these ages ago but it was rubbish so ditched it, this one is proper

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170223/f76086671a3900ac803a005e75c63778.jpg

Even added an earth strap, thanks Brucer for the heads up on using the back of the alternator!!!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170223/c54962b735d917065a79b441e6e7b933.jpg

This was red, changed it to black cos Iain's little brain couldn't deal with an earth being red!!

Then got a bit bolt happy

I think they look loads better!!

I also managed to move my seat by tipping it forward, moving it down one hole at the front that allowed me to move it back 40mm and it's still clear of the roll cage, legs feel so much better now!! I just need to bring the wheel a bit closer to me again, will look at another spacer.

Brake fluid change tomorrow and get the trackday box ready and we're all good for Coombe on the 3rd March.

M6 mate, I gently ran a tap down the holes that way the existing clips are retained. It's possible to get to the underside and use nuts on all of but the very front corner ones.

These are stainless bolts, I need some stainless spring washers and penny washers!!

Did a few things today, update coming once I get home!!!

So I started the day with a nice little drive out, waste a bit of fuel!!

When I got home I decided I hated my fuel tank location!! Iain constantly belittles me about how it was mounted and how it looks so I thought I'd do something to make it look better!!

Before

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170224/959560a91febee62caa9c31e33acd007.jpg

After

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170224/27f6c34f7635eae43e40a5ee88a2a570.jpg

And no fire, which is a bonus!!

I need to order some different fittings and I want to get a different lift pump, low pressure high volume, but it all works as is and looks loads better than before, plus lower COG which always helps!!

Onto my next little idea

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170224/de0624952ddb01e82dc4aa7c095d81e6.jpg

Lambda bung was a twat to get out!!! Had to weld a foot long piece of angle to it!! Then cut it off cos it won't spinout without hitting stuff!!

All in an effort to get this working

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170224/cd63cab900bb80f7ad0ce734f057a4b7.jpg

My little AFR!! I know it's not really a reference figure you would use but if for any reason we end up lean I'll possibly be able to see before real disaster strikes.

Still didn't get my brake fluid changed or the trackday box sorted........maybe need to do that Sunday!!

Few little bits today!!

Iain suggested switching to a special shifter turret that he claims would "revolutionise my gear change experience" he found me one at an old car deconstruction centre. He told me he'd cleaned it prior to my collection Saturday evening, needless to say he hadn't, he's such a let down. He didn't even have any biscuits for me to gorge myself on. Anyway I digress.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170226/7663a54d39c4c29f1d963bdbe0441e31.jpg

Cleaned, heated and painted.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170226/16bad572b69417d6bb0dfeeeaaa484cf.jpg

Installed, I ditched the pin and went with an 8mm bolt, it has a nice long shank so it'll hopefully keep slop a minimum.

It is loads better, looking at an internal shifter as my next step.

I also got the scrubbing brush out and scrubbed the back of the car to get as much of the grime that seems to have stuck to everything off, looks a little better.

Did a brake fluid change, running Motul something or other, see how it fairs.

Ordered up some tubing to make some caliper end mounts for my brake ducting

Few engine bay shots. Can't believe it looked like this when I got the car 3 and a bit years ago!!!

Whats the turret then? Is it off a later f17 style, with an 'H' pattern cast in to the inside and 'pin' on the 'finger'. I know the cable style f17 ones are like that.

Shit!! You kill me, we stuck it in the hot wash to get the carbon out the inside!! Ironically we did that rather than acid bath it to try and preserve the paint!! Needless to say, we failed.

I don't know in truth which box it's off, Iain suggests these mods, I cry about trying to find the parts and he then goes and gets them for me!! He's my little shining star!!

But yes it does have the little detents inside which give it a much more positive engagement.

Joined Craig at a very very wet Castle Coombe on Friday.

For some reason my heated screen refused to de-mist, I think it's screwed!!

No drama, brake ducting borrowed

Did the job perfectly, de-misted the screen, meant all was not ruined!!

Amazing how much front end grip the Rainsports offered, really felt confident in the car. Few little tickles out of the last corner Camp as it was really slippery with both a Clio and an RX7 smashing into the barrier in a big way in the morning.

Also collected my new windows!!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170304/5265700e490dc6138137c6927d15ff7f.jpg

New seals required for the front but I've got a little plan for those. Rears in, looking fresh.

Also decided that my seat was far too high, 9 inch grinder came out, added some new 30x30x3mm box and that went in well, levelled the car up as best as I could and as such the seat rails went in level, just need my weld in inserts to properly keep the seat in place.

Seats were level before, bout 30mm lower and even further back now too, got to sort something with the steering wheel next, get it lower and closer to me

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170304/f0fd0c8b11418507c776243c3d4b1eea.jpg

New front brake lines to go on, little link to get them away from the wheel as I've had the current ones rub on the inside of the wheel!!! These will be loads better.

Need the bigger discs, will swap those out at Euros tomorrow, then get the lines fitted up, might not have the handbrake fitted but will hopefully have it all ready and aligned for Cadwell, worst case Ben has done a good job of getting it straight and square so could run Cadwell without getting it 4 wheel aligned.

Ordered all the cap head bolts and got some lovely SS brake fittings and PVC coated SS Braided lines, will have fun making that this week.

The beam cost enough!! Well into 4 figures after sourcing the beam, new discs, pads, calipers, wheel bearings, handbrake cables, all new braided lines, fittings and clamps and the work carried out but it's proper!!

The rear ARB is a Saab effort, 9-3 i believe, available from Ebay I'm sure it's BMC motorsport that sell them.

You don't need the triangulation with an ARB, what the triangulation is trying to eliminate is unwanted toe and camber changes mid corner. Camber more than toe in truth. The additional ARB just stiffens the flimsy beam up.

Doesn't look like it'll be done for Cadwell now as the calipers are 7/16-20 UNF inlets instead of M10x1 as I'd predicted, new ones on order but I'm running out of time.

Stuart
22-03-17, 07:52 PM
I see how it will prevent or hugely reduce the toe change, but as it's bracing at the bottom of the arm, I can't see how a camber change will be prevented.

The camber change is, hopefully, prevented by that fact the ends of the beam can't twist as they are now braced below the wheel centre line.

Stuart
22-03-17, 09:12 PM
Could it give them more chance to twist as the moment of movement is no longer going into toe and camber, but camber only?

I'm sure it's been thought through well but to my idiot eyes it doesn't look like it solves all the ailments listed. Granted we are starting with a shit design in the first place so that won't help lol

I think the idea is that there is a support below the beam now so if we imagine looking end on at the beam from the back of the wheel we currently have an L where the bracing turns that into a T (please imagine that the T is on it's side as I can't put on it's side here) then imagine the bottom of the T is connected to the long part of the T with the wheel bolted to the top of the T.

It must help prevent movement around the pivot point/centre of the T

Well atleast I hope it does!!!!

The best thing to do House is test it for yourself. I used to get tyre witness marks on the inner and outer arches, yet nothing near contact throughout bump static.

Im still on the fence as I went up a tyre size since fitting, but can let you know soon. Only had a wet day on 205's since as you know.

Pretty pleased with most of that. The lines will stay as a separate feed for both left and right for now but it'll be changing to a single flexi to the beam and a T piece on the beam itself for when this moves to the new shell.

Rear discs are also huge at 264mm but the pads are teeny!!! Handbrake will be a mash up for Nova and combo van, if I can re-rope a lift I'm almost certain I can figure out a handbrake setup that will work!!

Track and Road Wednesday for a little map tune, then up to see my partner in crime and off to our little house we're renting for Wednesday night, it's got a hot tub!! Then Cadwell Thursday morning!!

Car is pretty much ready, new front flexis going in tomorrow and re-instate the passenger brake ducting. Seat is in it's new lower position so I'm looking forward to trying that and first time at Cadwell on slicks, Vbox will defo be on, see if we can get below 1.50!!!

It's is, they call it the mini Nurburgring!!

The beam wasn't on Ghost, it's literally just gone on this evening.

Just need to solve the air in the rear lines, handbrake is sorted and works

Brakes look fapping huge!! And work rather too well, locking the rears!! Need a .75 rear MC, will order one up.

Feels really sharp, like it wants to turn in, I'm hoping on the slicks it'll feel a bit more planted at the rear. I've added some front damping and softened the rear as far as I dare, will need to play around with the shocks and damping.

Will need to get the geo measured so I can add some rear camber, hoping to see 3 degrees as I'm still getting rubber rolling up in the middle of the rears. All good fun

the new rear axle looks good!

don't you have a brake proportioning valve? that can maybe sort the rear brakes from locking up..
by the look of the wheelnuts you will be needing some longer wheel studs too..

Wheel studs are fine, plenty of penetration on them, as for the proportioning valve, Iain and I are just discussing that very thing!!

Stuart

Iirc something like green threads is all you need for a secure enough fixing, so those nuts are fine in my book lol

you need to be cunning about the valve as some are rate adjustable from a single fixed point, which might be above the point you need it limiting. A bigger bore mc would help reduce the rear pressure

Harvey

the proportioning valve

My Astra is running an adjustable one in my pedal box setup in-line to the rears, retaining the .700 rear m/c giving me infinite adjustment. Car feels lovely and balanced with the .625 front. I'm running 285mm front Hi-Spec 4 pots and stock rear Astra GTE 16v discs with the stock ATE two pots.

It's all relative with pads, disk sizes, calipers, MCs & bias etc to get it not locking rears; try not to tempt a rear bias as fun as it seems because it'll stop you dancing mid corner / on entry & just put the car in backwards! Beam looks great; you might find something like a 250LBs/inch long spring with dampers set to soft being the ideal now that it has the lateral strength.

Softer springs are on the list for purchase, can change them in 20 mins so will take them to the next track day. I think I'm running 350's on the rear now, it's does feel a little disconnected at the rear, would like to try it with slicks before panicking!!

As for the brakes, the .75 M/C is on it's way, I'll throw this on and Iain has offered me the lend of his bias valve so I'm gonna see how the .75 works and go from there.

Yes yes it silver, yes yes it looks awful, Iain has already told me. However function dictates form, if it works it works.

Be aware though, they dont tend to push that much air into the bodies at that location due to the air pressure. The main reason I have one is to allow hot air to escape from the engine bay when stationary..

Vent works!! Loads of air moving around the bay, at 40mph I could feel significant amounts air blowing around my legs, with the vent taped over (very scientificly) that breeze was virtually non existent.

Just to clarify I have a hole that my clutch cable passes through, this is where the air comes through into the cabin, I have just ordered some bungs to fill said hole, something I haven't got round to until now.

Proper test results once the new air temp sensor is fitted.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170514/51f82ed73e0a79faa33a1bbdc3456748.jpg

Iain and I got a garage cos it's crap enough if it rains, let alone all your stuff getting soaked. The rain held off apart from a few little sprinkles that didn't really affect the track which was good, especially after a wet Rockingham was described to be "as slippery as a bucket of eels covered in olive oil" during the briefing.

We had a fairly quiet morning, learning the track, which despite a few awkward bumps flows really well, there were many many sideways moments, mostly on purpose!! Including one moment where both Iain and I were sideways through the same corner at the same time, absolute hilarity!!

On a vehicle point, we seem to have survived intact, brakes were next level, defo worth the investment, few clonks from my top mount bushes that need addressing but other than that all good

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170606/7f3925fcc6aa8a7117f193e4b91274f5.jpg

Then lunch time something peeked out from behind the clouds and the familiar question of "slicks?!?" Was asked about 20 times!!

However before that we happened to find out that Brands has a weigh bridge, I couldn't resist!!

Didn't think I'd be that light, almost impressed!! Haha

Anyway so the afternoon session started dry on we were on slicks, well we performed a record speed tyre change Iain did 8 wheels on 2 cars in the last 6 minutes before the end of lunch!! Just as we were getting our helmets ready, this BMW driving dickhead, thinking he was a hero did this and brought a red flag out for 25 bloody minutes!!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170606/62e59c48b5522f328a069f1a85d34a41.jpg

By the time it was cleaned up, the rain had started again, we, being bigger heroes than BMW boy, decided that slicks on a damp track was the right decision!! We didn't fall off and we were actually surprised by how much grip was on offer, however when the rain started bouncing off the track we decided to have a little break.

We did get some proper dry laps in though and Paddock Hill bend is loads of fun in the wet and the dry!!

Anyway, all in all, a rather good day, shame it was so expensive for what is a 60 second lap but we had loads of fun as always!!

House looks great

I am shockingly handsome, thankyou!!

It's not a great spec as those that follow know already

Basic run down

XE on throttle bodies
Hanger 30 adjustable front suspension
Hanger 30 rear disc beam
Half rear cage
Seam welded engine bay
OBP pedal box
fuel tank in the boot
Steel boot, bonnet and doors

That's about it.

The new shell will be different but again there's no reason we can't get to under 800kg

It was slippier than a bucket of eels covered in olive oil.

I know it looks really slow in the videos but I don't think I could have gone any quicker, just reviewing my wet lap videos and almost every lap has a correction in it at some point, oversteer at Paddock Hill and understeer through clearways. Whatever though it was a top day.

I make no comment about the dry weather only drivers, they need to grow a pair!!

It seems the new rear beam has inadvertently given me some rear toe out, we've always tried to avoid toe out as it's meant to be scary, admittedly it's not a lot of toe out but car feels really good so it's staying!!

Thanks but are you sure you're looking at the same car we look at?? It's a pile of shit!!

Suspension, Gaz coil overs all round, think I run 425lb's on the front and 250lb on the rear.

It actually handles really well without a rear anti roll bar too but I've got it there incase I want to be like Iain and induce loads of lift off over steer!!

Mike, I don't mind Brands, being that it's so close to me I should do it more often but it's £250 a day which is extortion!!

I've been putting this off for ages but decided today I'd try and fit an internal shifter. I sifted through Iain's waffle on his build and found a little diagram and also some other comments about getting the slot in the right place which helped.

I decided not to remove the original upstand from the old nova lever and instead to mount a plate onto it, glad I did this as gear lever height is now perfect, just had to space the back up a little get the ball on the lever in the right place.

Rather annoyingly I've had to leave this part of the carpet support in

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170611/89d82ca03f1b9205202326e4defbd949.jpg

As my solid rear brake pipe is clipped to it!! Anyway as we all know this shell is fubar anyway so I don't care, I'll stick some edging strip over it and be done with it!!

Road tested, got it spot on first time, works perfectly!!

This will remove 10 seconds a lap easy, I'm going to be even quicker than Iain now!!

Have I missed something what's wrong with your shell?

Roof skin replacement isn't great, it's started to crack the filler and there are so many things I don't like and can't be bothered to try and sort out.

Easier to just get a new shell and start again but do it properly, shell prep will be done by Ben @ Hanger 30, engine is built and ready, just needs the dry sump kit fitting, lots of little bits being done, as from my previous post the shell has been blasted and is ready to go back to Ben, just waiting for a slot from him, then back to me for mocking up, back to Ben for adjustments, then paint, build, drive. Easy as.

Well I need the doors and front wings as they're solid, as for the rest of the shell, I'm not sure, I can't see it being worth anything, roof skin is fubar, it doesn't have any mounts for standard pedals or seats, the cage is just a half one in the rear.

LMAO wouldnt wanna tow with any RS Audi, i frequent Audi forums an never heard anyone getting over 23 mpg from a RS6 lol most average 20 or less.

Be lucky if you get over 15 when towing a trailer lol

House
23-06-17, 08:37 PM
Well, Audi don't actually provide a stamp on it for towing, so it wouldn't work, I'm sure you could but as Mike says. I managed 24.4mpg over 330 miles. Some A roads from Holyhead down through Wales and around Shrewsbury then down the M5 and last Cirencester along the 417 to the M4, M25 and home. Cruising at 65-70 it nearly gets to 30!!!! But then some young wipper snapper comes up behind you in an Astra VXR and flashes you out the way and when that happens the law states you have to educate them.

In all fairness it really goes but it's hard to describe, it doesn't Pin you to the seat but you nail it off the line, look down and you're doing 80, it's really sedate and comfy!!!

Mike
23-06-17, 08:45 PM
Im impressed you got that mpg!

Its a shame there one of the most expensive cars ever made to run/maintain (other then the V10 version lol) as the performance in them is phenomenol. Effortless power all the way upto about 165. Nice clean power delivery, pretty quite & super comfy.

I work with a guy whos got a C5 (RS6) saloon, an his dad a B7 RS4. There both so different to drive with the 6 being way more refined an handles like heck for a barge.

If i didnt do so many miles Id have a saloon without a doubt, but as it is ill have to settle for a supercharged S4 lol remap & smaller pulley makes more power then the current RS6 for £15,000 less lol you use RS246 at all House? Wealth of knowledge on there.

House

I'm registered on there mate and it's very useful for research, Tim tells me anything I need to know, he's well practiced in these monsters, you might know of the blue S3 they built with 614 HP, that's next level!!

Supercharged S4!! I had a go out in a Supercharged RS4 that The Phirm put together, 650 Horse, was utterly insane.

I agree the RS4 is more of a drivers car, the 6 more of a wagon, I like it cos I'm hoping I can blat about in it, it's fun, understated, doesn't attract too much attention and then come home get the wife, foster kids and dog in the back and take them out somewhere!!!

Mike

Certainly a wagon aye lol fastest estate car ever built i think??

Dont think ive seen that S3, but not been on there in ages lol yea the B8 S4 is a 3.0 TFSi, there actually supercharged not turbo. Pulley change & engine remap (and gearbox remap if auto) makes stupid power for a 3.0 (480+ on standard blower, near 600 with an APR blower kit)

I’ve basically told him to go to town on it, do everything he feels will benefit it. He’s built a number of fast novas, I just pay him some money every couple of weeks and he sends me a load of gangster pictures.

I know the following is on the list

Front cross member replaced, with direct to cross member tie bars
Full HH cage with a lot of additional little touches
Custom steering column and mountings
Quaife DTT shifter (leaving an option for the sequential at the moment)
Full HH playing kit to go on
Custom made “solid” engine mounts (rubber bushed but very stiff) including 4th mount to cross member

Thanks mate!! Hoping to get a unit this year, I’ve got some contracting to do in America but that should secure some money for unit rental!! It’s £1000 a month round my way!! But the new accountant says I can swing it!!!

Need to get the old shell out on track!! Unfortunately foster kids have arrived and thrown a spanner in the works!!! [emoji23][emoji23]

His pedal box can be seen here along with cage and some additional bars we’re adding, he’s gone with a HH cage aswell so has done all the R&D meaning it should go in mine easier!!!!

Ah Mr House, its nice to read a few updates again, some nice welding to swoon over, add in a bit of fabrication and we're in anorak heaven.... sigh!

Loving the Tilton pedal box, presumably you're fitting one into your car?

Keep the updates coming, they make an old bloke happy.

Hold on to your seats for this one!!!

Yep reverse tilton pedal box, the one that puts the master cylinders under your heels, luckily I’m over to America quite often at the moment and can get one shipped over!!!

Yes mate, using a standard rack, albeit with quaife internals. This was only pictured for the steering wheel position.

Luckily Ben and I are close in height and build so I don’t have to keep making visits to the workshop for seat fitting, if it fits Ben it’ll fit me, however Ben is building some adjustment into the pedal box.

Make sure you have the camera on, we all like to see Iain struggling to stay in front! If you could grab the beam that would be great, I’m often at Brands so could grab it off you if that’s ok

So how did Friday go then Mr House?

Seen that there were 3 from team stonky and only 1 ended the day running...

Friday went well until I destroyed 4th coming onto the start finish straight chasing Iain, managed a total of 20 laps!!

It appears my ability to not break gearboxes has run out of talent!!

Never mind, it's kicked my butt into action cos I'm not removing the box on the drive, I'm bored of doing that and I'm getting old and can't be arsed crawling around under a car anymore!!

I'm looking at a unit Monday, as soon as that's confirmed I'll order a ramp and get that installed then get the engine and box out and Iain has an old F20 we're gonna throw in, carry on abusing the car for a bit, toyed with the idea of an SCCR but I've got a little something special planned for the new shell and don't wanna punt £2,500 at this car.

New one is maybe 4-5 weeks from being finished so I'll get that in the unit and start mocking that up and getting it sorted. At present the only things I need out of the current car are the throttle bodies, ECU and brakes but who knows I might get sentimental and keep the current car as a backup stick it on some ATE's or back on the hi-specs and just buy another set of Jenvey bodies. I'd like to keep the current car running aslong as possible, don't want to fall into the trap of having a car in progress and forgetting what it feels like to do track days. We'll see.

Also retiring our VW Caddy from work to become a dedicated track tow van, tools and everything in it permanently cos I'm bored of loading and unloading the Passat. Should mean I can literally turn up to the unit, get in the Caddy and go, no worrying if I've got everything or not!!

That was a bit of a long explanation!!!! Sorry mate!!!

Shame about yesterday, I have got some compbrake 4 pots you can use if you want to keep the old shell going. The unit and Caddy sound like good ideas, it really does my nut having to keep loading and unloading the van prior to an event
