Any updates or tinkering while in isolation House? Any plans moving forward?
Any updates or tinkering while in isolation House? Any plans moving forward?
Hey mate,
I've been flat out working!! Haven't really stopped, plus after 10 years of practice our son was born on 14/2/20 so been a bit pre-occupied with him.
However, I do have 4 trackdays booked between now and the end of August.
I've also got my new top mounts to install, very sexy, along with a few other little bits and bobs to change that are annoying me.
Main plan is to use it hard over the rest of the year and see where we are.
I need some front brake cooling, front and rear wheel speed sensors for TC in the wet and I'm possibly looking at a complete re-wire.....again!!
I'm also looking at sorting a storage unit for work and buying a motorhome so it's all go this end!!!
Yours is looking mental!!!!

She's alright mate, if she's not happy with things she can find someone else to use as a cash machine!!! Hahaha
Been a while but I've been pottering around!!
Ben found a guy 3D printing shrouds for the Dash2 we both run.

Should help with the glare.
Also been waiting on the new top mounts to come in, Ben has had these machined up

Notice the circlip on the bottom and the step on the top.
Meaning we could only get it over and back so far

New ones are flipped over, something people do with the originals but we weren't happy with the whole load going through the circlip.
Hence

With all the settings the same, apart from lowering the bottom spring cup 15mm to account for the upstand being on the bottom, we went from 2 degrees of negative camber to off the gauge, which goes up to 7!!
Dialled the adjuster on the shock to knuckle bolt to land somewhere around 3 degrees. More caster now too.
I'll get a 4 wheel alignment booked for next week and fingers crossed we can get the setup where I want it.
Brands on 23/7 so I'm nearly ready.
Congratulations with the baby!
Do you have any idea where Ben got the Dash2 shroud from? I have the same dash and can use one of these ;)

That must be a real ass to jack it up high enough to get those stands on surely?
I have a cunning jack!!!
It weighs a tonne but lifts to 850mm so it's not too bad
Only stuck it on the stands so no-one could push it away overnight!!

Pesky stuck thermostat
First little adventure of the day.
https://youtu.be/aRWSmhkmXKE
Coolant boiled over and front tyres first, then rear tyres, bit of tree chopping and got straight into the pits.
I could see a fluid coming out so switched off straight away.
Water temp was up at 102, oil 106, I've seen those temps before so wasn't worried as it was a hot day
After an age to cool down, decided to whip the stat out and run statless. Luckily I did, it was jammed solid
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200721/aa7617646a70a7529f9ebf46bff31dd5.jpg
No idea what this residue is, looks like RTV but it's not RTV as I haven't used any in the coolant system. It felt quite solid, really weird.
Anyway, stat removed and engine ran at 80 water 95 oil for the rest of the day, which I'd say is about right for me.
More videos incoming.

She moves! Looks like you had fun as always once the issues were ironed out.
You're running a sequential box aren't you? Do you still have to dip the clutch then? Had to see depending on the lighting, but looks like sometimes you do and sometimes you don't?

Yes mate sequential box.
So I always dip the clutch on downshift, I just can't get my head round not dipping it on downshifts, trying to help it last a bit longer. I know under heavy braking I could and have used clutchless downshifts but I don't like it!!
On upshifts I don't like clutchless up shifting with lock on as it feels like it doesn't like it,
3rd to 4th out of paddock I should be clutchless
2nd to 3rd our of Druids I should be clutchless
3rd to 4th on the bottom straight should be clutchless
But 3rd to 4th out of Clearways I used the clutch as I had lock on.
But I also sometimes forget and use the clutch whatever gear I'm changing into!! It's an element of my game I need to work on, along with left foot braking and braking harder and later.
I've only just got my head around gassing on before the apex and using the throttle and diff to pull the line tighter and kill the understeer something that I've only just realised at brands and how much quicker it makes you.
From the videos I'm around 57 seconds compared to a minute at my last Brands day. I think the car has a 54 or a 55 in the hands of a real driver. I'm gonna get my Vbox sorted and actually start to work on these things.

That’s really interesting. So it can obviously be driven clutchless but sometimes it doesn’t like it.

Well, after thinking about it I decided to give JPR gearboxes a call to discuss their thoughts and the long and short is clutchless down shifts must only be used in conjunction with a throttle blipper. If no blipper is available then clutch and manual throttle blip, which I've got out of the habit of doing and need to get back on it.
All up shifts can be clutchless with the use of a throttle lift or shift cut.
Rob did also say that being as positive as possible with the lever really makes a difference, so a solid hard pull or push can make the difference between wear and no wear in the box.

i don’t think there is a great deal of difference between an old slick and a good trackday tyre tbh, that car would do 55,s easy!, I was doing 58,s with a 115 Bhp 1400 8v. Get a passenger seat in and I will come down and give you some pointers 👍

I know! Did I talk up gearbox/gear change related issues!?! [emoji850]
Hahaha bloody thing!!!
I got a big vibration at the end of the last session causing me to come in, it came on all of a sudden, like something let go. Box still drives and selects all gears, no bits in the oil, no burnt smell like the oil got too hot so hoping gearbox and bearings are ok and the vibration is from the clutch.
I have a borescope arriving tomorrow that I'm hoping will allow me to look in there and atleast get an idea of what's happened before Monday. What ever it is that's caused the gouges is hard cos a bit of gravel wouldn't do that.

Yikes
I'd fling that clutch back to the manufacturer like a Chinese throwing star!
Wow thats a big failure, will you be showing the pics to whoever made the clutch?
Yeah we have, the response is that the harmonic vibration of the engine has had an effect on the clutch and we would be better suited to a 4 paddle instead of the 6 paddle as it's made differently.
I'm cool with it, it's motorsport these things happen, I've had a very lucky escape, it could have destroyed everything!!!
I'll be monitoring the new friction plate a lot closer from now on.
I'm also going to start clutchless shifting in the up direction all the time and I'm going to discuss downshifts with Quaife, I suspect I'll need a throttle blipper and some electronics.

Hahahaha excessive clutch slip was a reason they gave but I don't do that!! Haha
Never mind, onwards and upwards!! I've been taking care of a few little jobs while it's been on the ramp at Ben's, I'll update in due course.
So after discussion with James @ Relentless, who has been excellent helping sort this all out, he has been in contact with AP.
They recommend that we switch to a 4 paddle, which is on order to be delivered here tomorrow and fitted.
However, on Monday when we first spotted the friction plate damage we immediately ordered another 6 paddle from AP as a direct replacement. As above I've been advised not to use it but thought I'd take a look at it as it arrived today.
My original friction plate which AP say has no design issues and the cracking is down to either something I've done or engine harmonics.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200729/fb7f0780c59ef5000a9e90ad7f92babf.jpg
The new friction plate, same part number, totally different design..... notice the paddles are bigger, the slots end in oval shaped holes not round.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200729/01da8514dd6d7ff1e5080b0b835a1c73.jpg
In short that's a totally different friction plate!!!
I've taken the opportunity while at Ben's to do a few little things that have been on the list for a while, cleaned all my oil lines and engine strainers, cleaned the bay, made an attempt at some front brake cooling and sorted my headlight inlet.
Brake cooling

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200729/f334d6c2a98c391e2b428ca9bc704292.jpg
Cut the plates out in the guillotine and welded them up myself, as I'm now in the circle of trust, Ben lets me use the MIG!! Added some outlets and a splash of paint, these are just proof of concept so probably not the finished item.

There's not much space in there so it's a case of best of a bad job, these tubes use a plate shaped to match the caliper bracket and act as a washer behind the brakes to knuckle bolts. Best solution we could come up with.

While things were apart I got the chance to investigate an annoying "ting tinging" noise like something was touching the flywheel, it happened every time I turned right only, my thoughts were starter motor gear touching the flywheel!! I was proved right, the return spring on my Brise starter motor had come off and the cog was free to flop in and out, everytime I turned right the centrifugal force pushed the cog out to touch the flywheel!!! Annoying but now solved!!
Anyway, Mallory 12th August.

Also added this BFO red light in the car as a low oil pressure light, might seem a bit extreme but in certain light it's hard to see the Dash2 warnings and I wanted something that would alert me and say
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200731/545eee9a68f44e42115ee11786c14991.jpg
"stop, bad things, worse than clutch paddles falling off, be happening"
The light is run off the ECU, set to be on when oil pressure is anywhere between -3psi and 30psi and off if above 31psi.
The idea being, if the red light comes on and I dip the clutch the ECU will turn off the engine as it's set to do so via the low oil pressure kill function.
Hopefully, I'll never have to practice this.
Last few items sorted.

Bit of project Binky inspired bracketry, Ben didn't like how the bleed nipple was just flapping about in the wind so he commissioned me to create a solution. It's neat enough. Will powder coat it along with the other bits once I know the brake cooling and gearbox cover plates work.

Now this will take some explaining!!!!
https://youtu.be/3y2GuM8IHV4
Just reviewed some data from Mallory, here is a session from Iain and I overlaid, it shows where he was quicker than me, 2.362 seconds over 1 lap, his main gains were in the braking zones for turns 2 and 4, so I was able to go out and work on those corners, I'm still nervous on the brakes after my Cadwell crash so it was good to see I really need to work on it. Iain's lap is the red line and mine the blue.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200814/5a15d149cdfc5b235884b6b3b079368c.png
I went out in the very next session and got myself nearly half a second up on Iain by turn 4 only to loose that advantage round turn 5, I still managed to beat his quickest time but there's lots more time on the table. Iain in red again and me in blue
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200817/2a8e82814d9ceb9365c28f46a628c014.png
I can see this being really useful and I'm looking at adding some more data logging to have even more squiggly lines to look at.

Thats pretty dang cool!
What's Delta-T?
I'm no race engineer but my understanding is the Delta T is "delta time", or you could say base/ideal/target lap time.
So in this case the delta T is Iain's lap time, which is represented by the straight red line on the graph, then my lap time is the blue squiggly line that goes + or - to the delta T.
From that you can look at the time line and see where on track either lap time makes gains or losses and then male changes.
I'll do some more screen shots a bit later when I get 5 to explain how we work out where the losses and gains translate to the track.
I will say I am not a race engineer, I literally looked at it and tried to work it out.

Mostly I look on the lateralAcc, graph, and click on the maximum button. From that I see if the setup is better I have bigger corner G-s, or if the tyre is overheated see the lower G-s.

Good shout that, corner speed/apex speed works the same way I guess. Like I say I'm new to working all this out!!
I figure the biggest gains now are going to come from my driving skills, hence the use of data logging

https://photos.app.goo.gl/mPs2Giymy9yHnWTLAThe green line is with 120kg passanger. The red and blue is without passanger and the car was 30kg lighter, so 150kg lighter overall.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/itoGy6X7jTM6jz3y5
Here are the maximum values. With the red and blue I was on the limiter in 3th gear for 20m long. You can see there is not too much grip for the tires, max 1.15-1.17G, once was the peak 1.2. the longitudinal max 0,6G is jut out from the pit lane in 1th gear.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/M2mLtV8TUdBMkddy9
At the minimum value is one very important thing, Longitudinal Acc at the green is 0.7G clear sign I did not push the brake really... Next time on the red and blue aroung 1G what is ok for the R888R. Hard braking is important for the races.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/mPs2Giymy9yHnWTLA
What you can see from the graph there is more interference between the red and blue lines, and just 0.01s difference on the laptime, there is much more in the car, so I must practice more.
Pretty cool to look at Tommy. It's great to use to see where you can and cannot make up time, like you say you can see how hard you are braking and the corner speeds
Post used to get picture order for the next post
Entry speed turn 1 Our entry speeds are within 1mph and house is 0.16 seconds ahead at this point of the lap.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200817/99227674fe22e373fa864a6fff244608.png
Exit speed turn 1 Iain's exit speed is 3mph higher than House's and we can see that Iain has opened a gap of 0.12 of a second so just through turn 1 Iain is 0.26 quicker
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200817/bfcb591a3e84d8a3563ffeffd0c65f22.png
Iain braking point turn 2 at the braking point Iain's speed is 114.5mph and he has pulled another 0.08 seconds over House.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200817/957246dfc918d30ed7ca975d59dfbcfe.png
House braking point turn 2 speed is the same as iain's but braking is much earlier than Iain's and although they brake with the same force, deccel rate is the same, House brakes for longer and slows more for turn 2
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200817/15fcc9ec4d1b8e1bf08bf7731495cd4f.png
Braking point turn 3 is the same for both cars but Iaiin's speed is 6mph higher at the braking point.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200817/66395fbd5df298eb97c285d556df619c.png
Apex turn 3 iain's apex speed is 3mph higher at turn 3 and he's opened up 1.58 seconds over house.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200817/062c6c2db7686059c56ae38a02c72e36.png
Apex Speeds Turn 4 iain is faster down through turn 4 by 5mph with a lead of 2.16 seconds
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200817/c454905a22e5b74803f54f6a8d62e9d4.png
By the end of the lap Iain has pulled out 2.362 seconds and House has some work to do in the braking zone of turn 2 and down through turn 4.

Yonkers!
You would think that would be more likely to happen in the dry with too much grip? Or was it spinning in the wet then suddenly got grip??
That's what I was thinking. Either that, or the shaft was on its way out already and didn't need much persuasion to break. That said, the break itself doesn't look like a typical repetitive strain crack you often see on bits that give in to repeated overload situations.
Thoughts anyone?
Well, I did the sighting laps at Cadwell it was terrible, no grip at all, and as we all know I had a little off at Cadwell so something told me (sixth sense) something wasn't right, started getting an odd misfire, so I thought as it's pissing it down I'm done, on the trailer and home.
Got home, fiddled with all the plugs in the bay and went in a quick road test, 800 yards from home, second gear straight wheels, maybe 50% throttle.....BANG snappy snap.
2 random people stopped to ask if I was ok and one of them towed me back home!! (She was a legend)
It's snapped exactly at the circlip groove, now having spoken to Berrisford he said to me they all go there as it's the weakest point, it also had a square edge groove creating right angles in the bottom of the groove, stress point!!
Other shafts of mine have also started twisting
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201023/e0506b041056ce0cdeab97a0fde19477.jpg
The new shafts from Berrisford have a slimmed down centre section (pics to follow) that apparently moves the stress away from the circlip groove and they'll be heat treated properly.
HHMS do it the other way, they move the circlip to the outer end of the shaft meaning no stress on the circlip groove. They also rotate the inside of the CV so the groove is on the inside, all great stuff. The only issue is that you have to use their CV's at ?128 each!!!
So I'm going with Berrisford who have an excellent rep for making shafts and we'll see what happens!!

Shame about the shaft mate. Nothing I have seen from the regular Vauxhall world is up to the job, I had an identical failure.
Since fitting Berrisford shafts about 7 races ago had no issues at all and still dead straight. My car probably has a bit more power and a lot more grip than yours too so you're in good hands.

Busy day today,
when I moved the car off for wiring a few weeks ago there was a puddle of oil under the car.
Couldn't really understand it, as when it's running there was nothing pouring out....
Believing it to be crank seal we whipped the box out in 45 mins flat.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210626/ec6164cee5730f0c7687022706f17e12.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210626/f415acd1c2e05e305d1dc2fb22f5432d.jpg
Despite a bit of oil out the bolt holes the seal was surprisingly dry... got the air line out to clean and blow it of, as the nozzle got onto the sump join to the block an explosion of oil out the crank bolt holes!! Bloody sump leak.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210626/8f16f85fa2b61b5f04ea43e094e528cf.jpg
So off with the sump, 3 bolts round that end loose!! School boy error when I fitted them, no sealant on the threads at all.

Bit of cleaning and some 3 bond
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210626/32b8c791a87d5fde5d10d8be3a961c9e.jpg
Then I snapped a bolt putting it back together!! With luck on my side (for a change) I managed to work the broken bit of bolt out with a pick!!
Clean and reseal, back together.

What?s the idea/reason for the loops before the pin?
It's incase you have a pin problem, bent or damaged that needs replacing or you need to move a pin for any reason, there's no hope of pulling any slack out of the loom so it goes there in the connector boot
Edit to add "stress relief" too as pointed out by Mr GSI!!

I would suspect this will be for stress relief in the cables, giving it an extra half an inch maybe should they be pulled tight.
When I 1st looked, thought they were common links but had to zoom in after you mentioned it.

Looking good.
I was looking at paddle shift stuff myself this week. I’m on a Life ECU, which you can run as a GCU. The kit Life do is supposed to be excellent.
?3200 + VAT, which probably isn’t too bad. I’ve not got as far as looking beyond that (Geartronics etc), as ?3.20 + VAT would be too much right now.
Yeah I'll be honest, I can't see me ever going for paddles, I love the lever!!
But the geartronics unit comes in at ?3,200.
That's a pneumatic system which would need a compressor in the car, and then all the other mounting issues, paddles, actuators, it's a lot of work.

Onto the home straight now, although there's still a fair lump to do, bulkhead to ECU, wire the ADU and PMU. It's all contained inside the car and James is confident of completion for collection 20/8.
Which gives me the weekend to fit the new windows, re-fit the brake ducts and some other bits and bobs before Brands on the 23rd.

Yeah as is usual with me, this all started from me wanting to overlay throttle position and brake pressure onto the videos we post, got carried away and spent a shed load!!
The other cool thing is that it will data log all the sensors, so if we get a blip or a loss of power or something we can look at the data and see what may have caused it.
As for the bulkhead fittings, we were planning to do it without them but James wasn't happy he could make it work as we wanted without them. I believe it's close to 4 figures for the bulkhead connectors alone!!
I often ask myself why???
Data overlay adds so much more context to a video. We've been doing it with Vbox/GPS trackers and Gopros for a while now cos you totally lose feeling of speed etc!

RaceRender is good for overlaying stuff, I think it's good to have as, like Iain says, you loose the feeling of speed watching a video but to see how fast you're actually going, also helps make comparisons for lap time. Good tool to have.
Things progressing down the unit, it's becoming a workshop. Got some of my tools down there today aswell

Weight saving - it's been on plexi windows since it was built, the only thing I've ditched is the rear window rubbers but I'd bet that the window sliders I've added now cancel that out!!!

Yes mate, brake pressure sensors, up high on fly hoses as there was zero chance of getting them in under the pedal box cover. Bleeding them was straight forward. They drive the brake lights via the PMU and will log pressure for videos.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210918/0eb815e71781260e5068a4b5cf6b7404.jpg
"Warm up" page for initial engine start and monitoring while it's all warming up.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210918/b0b35f33fdd3dd6e6de2446d3b0b93ea.jpg
So on the "warm up" page only, the water, oil and gear temps all display red until certain values are reached, it will also auto select the next page once it's reached a pre-defined oil temp
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210918/55021d151c5726f1d25ed1101e7d92e3.jpg
Similar to "warm up" page but "track" page has brake bias and camera recording icon.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210918/d5b11eee961a14d21592d5808b7f7caa.jpg
Lap timing page with active delta, not for use on trackdays......honest.
I'm working on a road legal page but haven't quite got that right yet.

Ah mate, my bad, didn't turn the camera on all day!!!
Was so busy dick arsing around with stuff and the camera isn't fully setup yet. Bloody annoying too as I had some mega powered over steer moments in the wet!!
I'm at Brands 7/10/21 and it's on the list of jobs before then.

Back in the workshop and given the once over nothing major to report, got a list of items to work through
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210922/462a3c3fd41fe29fd220205c7810357e.png
Rang quaife enquiring about a different gear set as mine is geared to 148 @8500 and I wanted to see if I could get that down to 130-135 but sadly they only offer one final drive and one other gear set that would go to 117@8500
So i either need an engine that revs to 9500k (hmmmmmmm) or I've got to stick with what I have.

Or look at having a CWP custom made. I was considering going down this route with my Quaife F15 ?box, and the cost wasn?t as horrendous as I expected.

Colin, tell me more....wouldn't I need a different lay shaft (or whichever shaft the pinion is on) to match the new crown wheel??

Is that pinion one piece with the shaft?
You would need the shaft making with the CW if so, the teeth Geo's will change for the tooth count

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's one piece Boff, I'm looking at other options with Quaife, seeing if they'll offer different 4th 5th ratios.
Seeing if I can close the gap between 3-4-5 as the jump from 3-4 is quite big and again 4-5.
I doubt I'll get anywhere, only other option is more torque!! Hahaha
Well,
The good

Ignore the GP bit, it was the Indy circuit, it's just how the software on the dash sees it.
But 54.86 is nearly a second quicker than my previous best of 55.79, which I'm over the moon with and 4 laps under that 55.79 I'm happy with too.
I watched a video round Brands with a mate of mine who we sponsor to race in the Thunderbike Extreme and Ultra with BMRC, he's won both championships this year.
Our Apex speeds were similar, he brakes later and gains time on the accel out the corners, so I changed which gear I'm in for a few corners and broke a lot later into paddock hill and was on the gas up through Surtees and held the revs in each gear a bit longer. I was also leaning hard on the diff out of corners, which I feel I'm really learning how to use now.
I should have a data log that I can compare to the log from my 55.79 lap to see where I'm quicker.
And then The bad

Got back to the workshop at 13.45 and engine was out by 16.15, ramp makes things so much easier.
Box won't stay in 4th, jumps back into 3rd as soon as the power re-applies, even using the clutch as soon as you let the clutch up, it says no.

5th gear dogs (on the underside of the selector on the right forgot to get a picture) are immaculate, barely any wear at all.
I'm thinking it might be a repeat of the issue the box had when it was first installed, where it was selecting 1st and 2nd at the same time as you shifted, which Quaife fixed FOC.
It's been clunking a bit from 3rd to 4th for a while, which I thought was shift cut related and have been playing with those settings, so now I'm thinking it's the same thing as the initial issue it went to quaife with, albeit on a different gear selector and it's worn the dogs now to the point it won't stay in gear.
You can shift through it to 5th (with the clutch dipped) and it'll stay in 5th
So back to Quaife it goes.
Although I'm missing data, this is the 5th timed lap of the second session
https://youtu.be/dyiqnVqjMZY
Shame about the gearbox mate, but looked like you were flying , I’m loving the data logger something I really should invest in

Thanks mate, I'm creeping towards that 53!!!
Box I'm ok with it's done a lot of work, first time in 2.5 years it's been out, which considering everyone said it would be like chocolate, I'll take!!
It'll be with Quaife Monday morning.
It's cheeky front splitter time

I?m liking where this is heading!
Where are the brackets from?
Where are the brackets from?
eBay!! But it seems I've bought the last set!!
Just search quick release splitter brackets.
Gonna use M10 nutserts to the chassis leg, should be fine to use in shear.
I was scared it wouldn't work so didn't wanna drill too many holes, to get the air dam to work I'll have to mod the brackets
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211025/da8943ce1cf1fee857b53f0f6842fe7b.jpg
Then the air dam can mount to the splitter and be shaped to the bottom lip of the car.
Lots of other sellers, they're about ?40.
I think yours were cheaper cos someone put L and R markings on the wrong side House.
Left and right as I'm looking at it from the front of the car pal. Keep your nose out.
Yeah I've seen others for 40 quid too.
Well, this is still mock-up, so needs finishing touches, I've got the buffalo board to make it out of the proper stuff.

It's a tight fit, even if the picture doesn't look like it.
I'm gonna knock that riv nut out too and stick a boss in there. Need to bore the bosses out for M10 threads too, thought about going M8 but it needs M10 as the splitter bracket is M10 slots too.
Got one side buttoned up

Otherside will have to wait as I'm away to the Emerald Isle to earn a bit of corn for a few weeks.

You've been begging me to cut and shut bits onto it for ages so shut the fuck up.
Had a phone call and an email from Quaife today.
They're not giving me the gearbox back, there's something fundamentally wrong with it, they don't know what, they're not prepared to try and fix it.
They've offered me a full refund on the price I paid 3 years ago.
So that's that, no gearbox.
I've now got to look at other options and figure something out.

Yeah sequential, they've stopped offering the box now, they told me it needed ?3k of parts to fix, which they were going to sort FOC.
As far as I knew I was getting the box back and just waiting for them to call me to say it's ready!! Strung me along for 8 weeks.
Then yesterday out the blue, phone call, "we can't fix it, don't know what's wrong with it, want to wash our hands of it, we'll refund your original purchase price"
End of!!!
Sadev are the daddies.
Off to SWR you go, enjoy Harlow :D
Sadly I'm not at all surpsied by Quaife on this one. They are very much into OEM work now and seem to be sitting on their hands when it comes to proper engineeirng and motorsport products.
SADEV quote received from SWR, just working on the finer details, then I'll look to place an order.
Have you looked at the 3MO one, I know Bill Falconer is fitting one to his new build as is working on mounts that use the original nova mounts, might be an option

I have looked at the 3MO mate and the one Satchell supply too.
I'll be honest I'm feeling a bit "once bitten, twice shy".
We all know Sadev's reputation and as it stands with the refund from Quaife it's not a huge step to find the extra money to buy the Sadev.
The annoyance will be the shell works, if we need to move the engine it may need a new manifold, wiring changes, gotta get the shift rod through the bulkhead and to the box, new shafts. It's a shit load of work.
But it would be that amount of shell work for any new box so my theory is to buy twice, buy the best second time round!!!

Yeah mate, they said they were fixing it F.O.C which made me believe it was something they'd done wrong.
But the words on the phone were "it needs 2-3-4-5 gears replacing and a new input shaft, we can't figure out what's wrong with it or why it keeps going wrong"
As above they were all set to return it, but then someone else sent their box back with issues and they've just taken the decision to refund me and throw it all in the bin.
Is what it is!! I've got the money for the Sadev and the shell work allocated so we'll be looking to place an order shortly I would say.

Gonna be going for the ST82-14 mate as the ST75 is close on torque should I decide to upgrade engines in the future.
We've had some drawings through from SWR (the Uk SADEV dealer), been emailing Steve, he's been really helpful.
It seems the diff location is as per a standard F20 and therefore the same as my old box, so that's one result. It also looks like the adapter plate (bell housing adapter) has the 3 bolts for the rear mount, we're hoping it'll just be a case of Ben fabricating a top box mount and we can use the existing chassis mount point, so hopefully no shell mods needed.
My worst fear was we'd have to move the engine and need a new manifold, wiring and re-design of the whole engine bay, but we're looking good.
I've reviewed the ratios and am happy with them so it's literally waiting for the money from Quaife to land and ordering, I've pushed Quaife to send the refund earlier than 30 days given the bomb they've dropped and I await that!!
If they haven't sent it by the 15th of this month, I'll borrow some funds from the company and order it anyway!!
40% deposit paid on a SADEV ST82-14.
Shit just got real.
16 weeks for delivery

There were other more wallet friendly options Niek but the SADEV reputation is legendary
Once bitten twice shy and all that, my Dad said to buy the best you can afford and if you can't afford the best, sell a kidney.
Just a shame it's 16 weeks lead time. Puts us into April 2022 before we even receive the box.
