£4.5k mate!!

Eventual plan is quaife sequential but I don’t have the £8k right at this moment. Well I do but the accountant won’t let me spend it on a quaife gearbox, apparently I have to pay for bums to sit around watching Jeremy Kyle, but I digress.

Yeah plan is sequential in a years time as an upgrade mod.

So get it working using an SCCR then see where we are. It’s not hard to convert it.

All quaife parts and rebuild kit delivered to the Phirm.

Plus my F18 casing, 2 spare old gear clusters and a bunch of syncros from Iain’s back pocket.

Hoping to get down with Tim and get the box built one Friday in a few weeks.

As I’ve not sorted a unit yet I’m gonna use the 3rd ramp at the Phirm to install the new box, easy as you like.

Ready for Cadwell on the 9th of July!!

Update.

We did Mallory a few months back. Broke 4th gear in the first session.

Croft coming up in a weeks time, figured we should sort the box out.

Bought a load of quaife internals for an SCCR, didn’t have time to build the box up.

Bought an F20, took the car to headquarters and in 3 hours Iain and I had the box out and the new one in and working.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180802/40b6c5297ee8ef2ae750139f35ac3eaa.jpg

Also took advantage of the new facilities and Iain stuck some rubber on the new wheels that have been in storage for nearly a year

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180802/2cac485a1ccbf4c1c37efdda7ca663e7.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180802/5865ab5cc1c275c08a4d21adbc2e5d46.jpg

Bit too wide at the front! However as this is our test bed for things on the new shell, it’s meant we can get Ben to adjust a set of front wings and add a little extension to cover these, we’ll also roll the rears, so the new shell won’t have a problem!!

In order for Mallory to work, Iain dreamt these up

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180802/ab76e4aea9c4be675be70ffe7765856b.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180802/a31aca561d93452a15015af6ccc750a4.jpg

And he’s gonna roll the rear arches too!!

All a bit of fun!!

Fair shout. If you can get them on and not rubbing (even when hot and mid bend) then good job.

Mine are the way they are because there’s a risk of contact. It did actually happen in the last race so I have a dented rear arch but was able to continue.

I’m only running 195’s mate so hoping that’ll help.

Iain put the saloon arches on the front and we think we like it!! Haha so they might stay now!!

I’m loathed to do the rears, Ben has done all the work to the rears with new repair panels and it would be such a shame to undo all that work to saloon the rear too. We’ll see how we get on.

Lots of fun, despite me not having an LSD, was spinning the inside wheel out of corners, which was boring.

Decided before we do Cadwell that I needed my SCCR sorted.

Got down to the Phirm so the guys were on hand to help if I got stuck.

Using an F18 as a donor box got it apart

1st to 2nd syncro was knackered, so I dived into one of the other clusters we had in stock and sorted that.

In fairness the F18 was in really good shape, all the syncros that went back in were in great shape.

Built back up and ready to go back together with the layshaft and onto the half plate

Just to add to the Croft update, House was rapid even without the diff. See my WIP for him in action!

The scaff bar was required on the rear as the rears touched and bent the arch lip down. The fronts caught too so we both hung off it and diy widened them which worked amazingly!

In a change of plans, we're heading to Rockingham instead of Cadwell. We've heard Rocky is closing it's doors to become a supermarket trolley manufacturing plant, so we figured we'd better get some laps in. We've been before so should be good fun.

In other news, some shell prep work this week, steering column, pedal box mount, dry sump oil tank snuggly located, nice little mount for the fluid resoviours too. As always credit to Ben@Hanger30 for his exceptional work

SCCR installed, sound awful, which I'm told is normal

Plans continue for the new shell.

I was going for a stalk for indicators, dip/main beam and flash but we couldn't find anything that would work.

So I managed to find this on eBay.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180919/bc469ce2f2ae5f0f8bdacae0787c5ebd.png

After studying as many photos of rally and touring cars I could find decided the cable should come out here

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180919/92456259ed0aabe6fa44effbb65a4fed.jpg

Added a screw together connector to allow complete removal of the wheel, however the cord is long enough that it'll reach up onto the cage hook.

Much better than a stalk, plus the guy that made it is a design engineer and he does odd carbon fibre bits and bobs for motorsport, he's currently designing my switch panel that will have all the buttons on for everything.

I'd already purchased the lifeline weld on quick release before the steering wheel button ideas came up so wasn't prepared to outlay £480 for the one with the wired connections.

I'm using this wiring module from CBS on the current car and will replicate that to the new shell.

The great thing about oil to water coolers is that your oil gets up to working temp a lot quicker. And it stays at a more constant temp. Excellent bit of kit.

Also, we’ve been trying to work out a way of sorting the fuel tank and pump. I got hold of a brand new (eBay) tank but it was for a carb engine and doesn’t have the built in swirl/collector pot.

No problem, got hold of an injection tank, cut it open and relieved it off the swirl pot, level sensor/intake pipe and the roll over valve.

Pump feeds from here, level sensor plug, barb will be removed and replaced with a weld on AN-8 fitting.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180926/4cc0b87a5794dfa296caff3384207ac7.jpg

So fuel from the tank fills the pot via the little filter arrowed yellow.
It’s then drawn up the intake Green and into the pump, to the engine, the return comes back along the red hose and into the swirl pot where it creates a venturi that helps keep the intake surrounded by fuel.
The 2 blue pipes are both breathers, one is the tank breather the other is the breather to the filler neck

Gearbox has been on the list for a while mate!! Just needed the planets to align!!!

Both times I've put TB's on a nova it's been with what I now know to be a carb tank, terrible starvation problems below have a tank of fuel when going round roundabouts. So I ran an external swirl pot with lift pump and HP pump and filters and all that jazz.

Well I decided to get hold of an injection tank with the built in swirl pot but they're rarer than rocking horse shit, or atleast Iain couldn't find me one (he's shit), so bought the carb one from eBay and then this rusty one from a donor car we've got, cutty cutty weldy weldy!!

I also hate barb fittings with a passion, so want to use some AN fittings direct out of the tank which means a bit of chopping about too.

Edit to add as I just read your question properly Colin!!

Standard tank position is best for weight and COG, low down, outside the cabin, I’ve got a wheel well mounted tank in the current shell, it’s crap!! Annoying to fill, stinky if spilt.

Onto fuel system, this has been the bane of my existence over the last few months, trying to source an SPI tank and then if I could find one how to fit an uprated pump in the tank.

In the end we decided the best way was to sort it ourselves, popped to The Phirm today to borrow Tim’s knowledge.

Few pics to do the talking, mark out and cut the tank open

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181003/b37b81b9df276d4776b5c3964f5a2e52.jpg

Exposes the attempt at an in tank swirl pot, but it’s totally inadequate

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181003/7251e87767a09772945e31390e037572.jpg

This is no good, it wont retain the fuel in the swirl pot, no matter what happens the fuel level in the swirl pot would never get above the level of the surrounding tank, the fuel would just drain out of the holes arrowed and thanks to the laws of physics the level in the swirl pot would equalise with the level outside it.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181003/3475f56e2c25575a2f97de94c7446793.jpg

Had to use an aftermarket fuel sender as I searched high and low for a brand new Nova sender but no luck, this one came from CBS and the float is secured correctly as per the instructions

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181003/0f19d85dac0907ff86ce1ab597af91ac.jpg

Fully glued in place

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181003/59b7d5922f6794fcd6d5749c83d9dee0.jpg

Made some little tabs to hold the swirl pot into place, was really tough welding these in, had to be so careful not to melt the plastic pot

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181003/c388c606e5d0a016cc464f43f32795b7.jpg

Tested it with the hose pipe on the return line only, you can see the jet pump effect as the return line feeds the swirl pot, with the hose on very very slowly, to simulate a return feed from the the fuel rail, it keeps the pot full to the brim and over flows to the rest of the tank, the jet pump effect also draws fuel into the pot from the tank via the clever little gauze filter thing.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181003/165e1b38e533f02649270741c269f794.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181004/18b24c4daa669c95908152b67d588131.jpg

Once the hose is off the the fuel level slowly drains back to match the tank level, as soon as the hose is back on it fills the pot again. So whenever the engine is running the swirl pot will be kept full by the returning fuel from the rail. It will be possible to run the tank down to almost empty now without any chance of starvation.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181003/940634fab6055092da82dfc5735052e9.jpg

Oh and a cheeky shot of the fuel pump and inline filter, these will be mounted to a plate next to the tank, more work for Ben.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181003/499340f9bdad9b628be78ca16143af87.jpg

All I have to do now is connect up my Dash2, fill the tank with 5 litres, measure the voltage on the fuel level sender, then see how much it take to fill the tank, divide that amount by 100, then fill the tank in 10% increments and measure the sender voltage, tell the Dash2 the measurements we've taken, it will create an equation and we'll have an accurate fuel level. Set the dash alarm to trigger at 15% and it will tell me when fuel level is low.

Fuel level sensor calibration today

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181004/832bcbebf1cdc052cba00365f34caaf5.jpg

Tested with water but will call it fuel cos I’ll confuse myself otherwise, set the tank as level as possible as it would be in the car, got it to hold 38.5 litres of fuel.

Set the dash to display in litres remaining as this to me is more useful than a percentage, also as litres it also means that if the tank holds 41 litres when fuel it should display 41 and not 112% for example.

Here displaying 15 litres

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181004/9f06b192a9b34e4ceea2b46fb8f5dd1c.jpg

It’s also pretty accurate, during the drain down test it registered each 5 litre increment pretty well so I’m confident it’ll work.

Set the 0 on the dash with around 3-4 litres of fuel still available in the tank, with the alarm at 5 litres, I’ll have to be pretty dumb to run out!!

Here is a video of the last 6-7 litres of fuel coming out of the feed to pump fitting, this was done with no return feed and back to the pot and just gravity drawing the fuel out, very happy with both the flow rate and the level at which it runs dry

https://youtu.be/6AcGOAA3QIU

Also spoke to Quaife and have ordered a gearbox oil cooler system to fit to the new box, not from Quaife, it’ll be one we make up ourselves, drawing oil from the drain plug and returning it to the redundant reverse sensor hole

Should be relatively easy to manage, nice little pump that will draw from up to 1.5m below the pump head, mocal oil to air cooler and a 200 micron in line filter.

Luckily the Quaife gear indicator also displays oil temp and can be set to alarm at a certain temp, say 95 degrees and I’ll just manually turn on the gear oil cooling at that point. The pump manufacture doesn’t recommend pumping oil below 60 degrees.

Why not have a thermostatic switch to trigger at 95 degrees to save havingnti remember to switch it on or off?

We've just discussed this very thing, the quaife sequential shifter will flash quite a serious warning at 100 degrees and will continue to flash until the temp drops.

I discussed with Craig that I may be able to piggy back off the temp sensor already in the box and use that to turn the pump on and off. That would require me to make some kind of monitoring device that would receive the input voltage and when it gets to a certain millivolt figure to turn the fan on.

Ofcourse if I had a better ECU I could wire it to the ECU and output to a relay for the pump.

I'm thinking about what I can do on this.

Push pull cable to activate

As I'm sure everyone is thinking this is a cheque book build and I can't make anything myself, I modified it as it's vacuum activated, no good for me, removed the vacuum actuator and did a bit of welding, made up a lever for it and welded that on, had to buzz it and throw it in a bucket of water a few times as the butterfly is plastic and i had to be real careful, melting it would have been counter productive.

Ready to go, just needs a little clip for the cable, worry about that once we've decided where to mount it.

Quaife tell me the box should be ready last days of October or the first few days of November.

Nothing Team Shonky Vauxhall do is proper mate!!

Heater matrix is a simple choice, had a wet day with Craig at CC, the screen misted up, couldn't see, needed warm air to de-mist, red car has a heated screen but it didn't work properly.

The matrix won't detract anything from the engine, hence the valve, it'll just be a closed loop when the heat is off and on the rare occasions I need screen clearing, mainly wet days, I won't be flat out anyway.

I looked into electric options but the amperage was disgusting. This is the best plan by far.

even with an misted screen you should be able to beat Iain, right?

the rest of the work looks top notch. looks like it is gonna be ready for paint by the end of the year..?

Iain loves a challenge, the misted screen might have been a good handicap system.

I think paint this year might be pushing it but, it's possible. More than likely it'll be early Jan.

IIRC the old Ford KA valve is the same, but cable activated so you wouldnt have had to make anything, and keep your garage jewlery title lol

When I made the heater box for the VX220, I put a VW T25 valve in parallel to the matrix so when fully open it was easier for the water to flow through the valve, and vice versa. More or less worked but still had slightly warm air when open

That was my original idea, just to add a parallel valve but another guy I know has this aswell and like you say it still blew a little hot air when set to "cold"

This is the neatest solution I could find!! I didn't know the KA had a cable valve, that is frustrating.

Note the shiney input shaft, opted for the superfinishing, essentially high grade polishing, reduces resistances and increases oil spread inside the gearbox.

Another busy day today

Spent the whole day making this, I did most of the bending and drilling, Ben did the welding

Started by working out a layout we were happy with and measuring the confines of a box we would keep them in

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181109/351f3420c075394ecbf11cd02c9a3566.jpg

We are going to make some link bars to connect the filters to the pump in the correct way, so to make sure everything was installed inline for those to work, firstly I had to cut up some of the AN fittings and turn them in the lathe and add an M10x1 thread for the banjo bolts to work.

I made up this alloy bit of flat bar to hold the pump and and pre-pump filter inline and an then made up an outline frame.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181109/024aa585b179d02c92858a2ba3221797.jpg

Added some tabs and a flat bar in the middle for support

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181109/a786226a81c48d35f4a631606114c245.jpg

Moved the flat bar to the post pump filter and made up some braces to hold that in place

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181109/d58860be93a6f79f833dfa14c824d3aa.jpg

Just needs to be welded together properly now we know it will work

These bodies have the injector high up the inlet for better fuel/air mixing and also the injectors are from underneath which is better for throttle response.

Whilst the old DTH bodies I have are great these are the next level up.

In back to back testing SBD claim, with verifiable evidence, to have seen 13 BHP gains over the original throttle body design they use. So we’ll see.

Yes, fuel lines will be on dry disconnect quick release too, so 2 hoses and 4 bolts and it's off. I'm getting to old to be servicing things under the car!!

25 feet x 15 feet, plenty of room to get the car in and both doors open with about 2.4 metres at the front, I'll need some dollies to get the rear of the car where I need it but they're on order.

Another good day up with Ben today

I started off on the mill, while Ben made some slugs to mount the fuel cradle onto.

So this is for a Corsa B, which meant the roof bend wasn’t perfect for what we needed, only one solution, choppy choppy

Big roof hole

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/cb3f3a2bf7c231fc8f49bfabbd899226.jpg

Played around with some door handles, maybe not the final version but something like this

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/c104514c3a05db471c1554af44c0d07c.jpg

Tempted to mill the centre out completely, now I just need to get the fibre glass doors cut out with the die grinder for the handles and locks

Boot lid next, ditched the hinges as we couldn’t find any hinges in stock to bolt to the boot lid and even with the hinges on you still have to cut the ones on the car off and re-weld them in a different position, see Iain’s thread, even after doing all that it’s still not possible to open the boot lid all the way and even then there’s no stay to keep it open. Therefore, Boom removable boot.

So the jobs are really getting a line through them fast, we are hoping that by Friday next week 98% of the work will be done and we can get it off to the exhaust place for them to do their thing, then it’s booked in for the plumbing to be done first week of Jan, hoping to see it in paint by first week of Feb.

I also learnt that you should never drink and order tools

Same deal with the bonnet though isn't it. No real need to remove the bolt lid that often, Iain had to cut his hinges down and re-weld, as did Ben.

Possibly this bootlid isn't as good a copy as the one you have. To be honest the fit on mine is dreadful!!

It's just there to see if the hole is big enough, then we'll tiger seal it on, we need to add the drain in this week as there isn't one yet. I would imagine I'll be taping it up in the wet. It's a bit of a crap design.

Today was a bits and pieces day, getting stuff ready for exhaust Monday.

I'd been told that fibreglass bonnets lift in the middle and are prone to cracking, didn't fancy this, I'll take the extra weight over not getting the bloody thing painted every 5 minutes

Ben was hatching a plan, he was walking around the workshop scratching his head, picking up bits of material, looking at it, then putting it back, he decided on this

House,

i haven’t had time to trawl way back into your build thread, so apologies if you’ve already covered this.

Are you using Ben’s rose jointed front suspension kit? And if so do you have any photos of it fitted, especially in relation to gearbox clearance (ideally when the car was SCCR, not sequential).

Thanks.

What Iain said!!! He'll hook you up with any pics mate.

I don't remember there being anything of concern with the suspension kit clearing boxes and such.

Aside from adding loads of castor puts the front wheel onto and rubbing the front wing!!! Craig had to cut his front wings out to give clearance!!

You've got the Hangar 30 kit on yours too Craig?

My concern about gearbox clearance is due to the fact my engine/'box has been lowered in the chassis. So I wanted to see how much room there was on a stock installation.

8valve-craig
16-01-19, 02:44 PM
Mine are Ben's arms but the rest is all fabricated to suit my car. I run a lot of caster and my cross member isn't in the original position. Gearbox doesn't come near the tie bars on mine and yours is small block so should be loads of room.

I have an extra brace under my front end, that's the only thing you will struggle with for clearance.

Yes, they come with a single V pulley as standard. I swapped that for a 4 groove alloy pulley from Brise, as well as a Titanium retaining nut. Total weight of the alternator is about 2.5kg.

Great way to save weight and space, but shop carefully, you definitely are better off with a genuine Nippon Denso item. There are huge numbers of aftermarket copies, and they just aren't of the same quality.

I can give anyone the part number if they want to get one.

House - a question for you..........

Did you think about modifying your front turrets to allow fitment of a slotted castor/camber adjustable top mount, rather like Jezz Francis has done on his Nova?

I'm looking into it for my car, but there's not a lot of room in a standard Nova turret. About 150mm maximum diameter available, when most of the top mounts available seem to be 160-175mm diameter.

Ben and I have just discussed this very thing mate. I'm looking at having a set of top mounts made up that are "under slung" (for want of a better description) so the top is flat and can sit up under the turret top and allow max adjustment.

It will still require some adaption to the hole through the middle of the turret but should be good enough to get all the angles we need.

I'll sort some pics once it's decided upon
