I've welded all the 3 seams where Paul have circled too. Force from the arms moving was my thinking...

And yeah getting in the cross member is a ****. I taped all the top holes and then sprayed till it ran out the bottom ones..lol

They're a pain, when I replaced mine way back I welded all the seams on the crossmember and added the plates then got it powdercoated, thoughts being that because it's magnetically charged, the powder would find all the exposed bits via the holes and the openings at both ends. Then just buff back a little where they meet the chassis legs, weld and seal.

Hey guys,

On to an update then.........

My guys have been busy this week with the nova around their main work but have still managed to make some excellent progress. Engine and box are in, New hubs and equal length shafts are in, New bottom arms, joints and track rod ends are all fitted. The boss for the wideband sensor has been welded into position ready to accept the sensor shortly. Engine is also wired/plumbed and has been started yesterday :) The only setback appears to be two faulty injectors. So two new genuine ones are on route from germany and should land wednesday next week due to the bank holiday etc. Once their in it will only needs a few minor things fettling So fingers crossed by the end of next week I may have the car home and I can start running it in. Few pics from earlier today below...............

Jeff....... Yes the injectors were tested and cleaned however two are not working now. They were perfectly fine before so its either the process they've been through or possibly damaged in the post. I guess thats what you get for trying to fix what wasnt broken! I'll do my best to get some miles in before the billing trip but it all does depend on when I get the car back. As said theirs not that much to do now just setting up and a few other odds/ends so fingers crossed it wont be long as I have things on my side to do also.

Edd..... cheers!

Stu...... Thanks!

Farmer John...... Cheers!

Scott........ cheers! In a way thats what all the grey is about as I wanted an understated factory look this time round and in my opinion is suits the car perfectly.

Tony...... Cheers and you have pm mate.

From my point of view they are two entirely different cars to be honest as with this one Ive tried to achieve the exact opposite off what I did with the red one. Yeah I'll be at billing all weekend even if the car isnt ready on time me and the missus will still go so feel free to come and say hello mate :)

Small update time then guys........

Unfortunatly not a great deal of work has got done on the nova this week. New injectors turned up and were fitted which did sort the issue it had. Car now runs fine and most of the work is done. The wideband gauge just need wiring up to the sensor which is already in place so they can look at what information its showing etc. Apart from that the linkage also needs setting up but that shouldnt cause any bother. I dropped by after work friday and fitted the front bumper, headlights and grill then placed the new tax disc in the window so when they test drive which will be pretty soon its all legal to do so etc. Few pics of how it now stands........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip198-1.jpg

I also got a quick shot to show how subtle the box looks in position. (Note fresh new earth strap too!)........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip199-1.jpg

Apart from the above I havent done much as Im waiting on the cars return. I did however paint a few more bits.......

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip195-1.jpg

My other rocker cover had cracked its paint around the bolt holes which was strange as with the way I prep that doesnt usually happen but Im pretty sure I painted the previous one twice which means their was probably double the amount of material on their than they should have been which is why it may have happened. Either way the above one was stripped to the bare bones and only painted once so fingers crossed it wont happen this time! As for the chassis info tag you could hardly make out the lettering due to also having too much paint on. Again this was fixed by stripping all the paint off and starting a fresh. You cant make it out very well from this picture but you can actually read it now! lol

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip196-1.jpg

Lastly it was noticed my bottom pulley was wobbling around a bit more than it should so I ordered a new billet one to sort this. I also got in touch with beardy for some of his phase two chips as a back up plan. Just in case the map shows to be poor and I have no time to source anything else before billing etc. Keith has ran them without issues for some time now so they seem a safe bet. If my current ones turn out to be ok however I can always just sell them on. ........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip202-1.jpg

Hopefully I will have the car home this week and I can set to on the hell of a cleanup it needs. I doubt Ill get chance to do everything Id like to but winter will soon be here again and I can go about making it even better for 2012. (How sad does that sound wishing the year away!) cheers for reading! :)

Hi Guys,

Onto an update then.............

All the smaller jobs were finished up earlier on last week so they could set the car up using the wideband and test drive to check all was well. Once they were happy I collected the car friday afternoon and brought it home. On saturday I took it out and got a few miles in which was awesome. Obviously I cant drive it too hard at the moment but I have been told I must work the engine to run it in properly etc. It runs/boosts very well so I am uber happy with it! Their is a little bit of lifter noise which Im hoping will settle down but If it doesnt then I'll order a set of genuine jobbies from autovaux. Also Ive been advised to get the front suspension all set up and aligned properly as my builders have said it will get the power down and handle much better than it currently does. Another good thing to note though is the equal length setup as the car doesnt want to pull you into the nearest field under boost like it used to! Ive got to get approx a hundred miles in then take the car back so it can be checked over to make sure all is well. Hopefully I'll manage that on a few trips out this coming week. Then its also got to go for an mot so we'll see how things progress. If all goes well and I get everything finished then I will use it for billing but If I have order more parts and things dont go to plan then I may have to leave billing until next year. Anyhow some pics are below.........

Cheers Matt, As Ive said before (Although most probably dont see it like I do?) It is very different to my last project.... Things are matt instead of shiney, Everythings a lot more low key. Hi guys, Onto a litte update of whats been happening recently with the car........................
After getting a hundred miles in I dropped the car off for a shakedown with no real complaints apart from a few noisy lifters and a leaking outer cv boot on the n/s. As the lifters had got no better I ordered a new genuine set along with cam seals, rocker gasket and a cv boot kit. With these fitted the engine is as quiet as a mouse and I no longer have cv grease splattered on the inside of my n/s wheel = WIN! Off I went to cover a further 150 mile..............

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip007-3.jpg

Until another problem caught my eye...... The battery light had a slight flicker around 4k but as quick as it came on it was gone again. I covered some more miles and the problem then started happening anywhere above 3k so I dropped the car off to get checked out. All the wiring/conections are fine so it seems the alternator is at fault. The only thing is we couldnt source one local until friday so my thinking is by the time its arrived and fitted we'll be well into the afternoon on friday. That coupled to the fact that I still havent had the tracking/wheel alignment sorted as well as a few other minor jobs so Ive made the decision to leave the car at home for this year. Hopefully with all the major work out of the way next year should be fairly simple although who knows as it is a nova let! The aim for this year is to get some good miles on the engine in prep for next year. Lets hope the weather stays good for us all this weekend and all the best to those competing for the honours. If you see me around please come and say hi as its always good to catch up with current members and new faces alike. Until the next update cheers for reading and all the best.

Hi guys, Where to start then...............

Following on from my last update It didnt look like the car would make it to billing due to us waiting for parts until the last minute. So I basically threw in the towel and said I wouldnt bother taking it. However once that post went up I was bombarded with texts and phone calls from Andy B/Keith urging me to re consider. They were even ready to drive up and help sort the car so I could get it to billing which was really good of them. Cheers Guys!! :) At first I was having none of it but after a while I saw their point and decided that even if it meant setting off friday eves instead of the morning that getting the car their would be worth it. So by the time the new alternator was fitted and we were loaded/ready to go it was nearly 6pm. A steady drive saw us arrive at billing approx 9pm. We made it with no problems which was a Winner! :d A great weekend followed and it was good to catch up with a lot of you and have a look round your motors also. Ive picked out some of my favouite pics that people took across various websites. Here they are and thanks to those who took them!...........

As great as the weekend was by the time late afternoon sunday came it was time to set off home. Off we went down the m1 which for fine until approx an hour into our journey when the battery gauge went down to a quarter and then shortly after into the red. The services were only a mile away so I planned to stop and take a look but seconds later I lost all power and ended up on the hard shoulder of the motorway! With the bonnet up their was nothing I could see obviously wrong so I gave Andy a call for help! Luckily he had just turned off for stoke a juction before so wasnt far away and came back to tow me into the services were I called the AA. Not long after they turned up we got a diagnosis of a dead alternator! I was quite shocked at that with it being brand new but obviously it was just a dodgy part. The car was then loaded up for the journey home.........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip015-4.jpg?t=1311432672
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip018-3.jpg?t=1311432745

Good job the car isnt uber low as it just made it onto the towing dolley with minimum clearance! We then finally got home around 10.30pm sunday night due to the above. Huge thanks again to Andy and his missus Emily who turned around and came back to help us. :) However that was'nt the end of sundays epic fail......... Upon arriving home the AA chap was a little slack unloading the car and caught the front bumper which pressed onto the lower return lip of the front panel. Even though the damage was very minimal I was very annoyed and got all the necessary details from the guy to put in a claim. Pics of said damage.......

Poor picture but the bottom edge of the bumper was gauged and a small stress fracture of the plastic was above it........(Look for the white lines that spread horizontally either side of the gauge)...........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip030-3.jpg?t=1311433283

In this pic you can just see were its pushed the lower return lip of the front panel upwards.......

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip025-3.jpg?t=1311433424

The worst part was how the bumper was sat as it had been pushed well out of alignment and was practically touching the bottom of the headlight which made me suspect a bent carrier.........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip021-3.jpg?t=1311433557

During the days that followed I fitted a new battery as the other now wouldnt even charge and got it back to my guys for another alternator. They put in a warranty claim on the part so at least I didnt have to pay for another etc. With the car mechanically sound again I got onto the AA and forwarded them an estimate for the repair work. After hounding them for 48 hours we finally got an authorisation to repair at their cost. :)

Hi Nick, nothing short of brilliant. Like so many others, I've been (and still am) following your thread with great interest and enjoying it no end. What a looker! Awesome and other expletives cannot closely describe the class in which your Nova sits.

Just as well! I know I would be gutted so it's a good thing they'll cover the expenses. Perhaps a chance to carry out some mods on their behalf? :thumb:

Cheers,
Niek

In early the following morning I got the bumper off and prepared it ready for my foreman to repair. Stress fractures can sometimes be a little difficult and need to be properly repaired. We used a cutting discs to slot the small cracks so they wont spread any further later and then use a flexible plastic filler to fill and level it.........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip032-3.jpg?t=1311434458

This was later rubbed down and primed up. At the same time I repaired a small nick in the other side corner which I had damaged myself whilst the bumper was sat in the garage last year........

The primer was then blocked level and I got the bumper re painted.......

Next us was the front panel so we got the car up on some stands giving us enough room to use a slidehammer and gentley pull the return lip back to were it should be. We also noticed that when the lip had been pushed up it had put a small bulge into the front facing part of the front panel so that had to be tapped back down too. As my foreman is a superb ex panel beater he managed to do this with no need for filler. Just a gentle tap from his hammer and dolley and it was almost their. All I needed to do was give it a block to take the last of the high spot out and level it up perfectly.........

With that sorted I gave the repaired area a coat of overpaintable stone guard and left it to dry so it could be painted the next day. I also called in to see Joe on here to buy another bumper from him as it was complete with a straight iron just in case mine was bent. Cheers Joe! :)

The following days saw the lower section of the front panel repainted..........

The bumper then went back on and I added the pinstripe before getting the plate and grille back in...........

We all have our own areas of skills when it comes to cars Edd. For example I wouldnt be able to drop my motor in and out like you can! Ive been working in the trade for approx 14 years now but the hike in quality came when I moved to work for Bmw 10 years ago. Like we all do I learnt from the guys around me and pushed myself to be the best I could be. Nowadays a quality job comes as second nature. No worries regarding the brace I have it wrapped and ready to go for you.

Thanks fella.... Im unsure on plans now to be honest. I keep thinking of returning to stock wing mirrors and I like the idea of two stock sr front seats maybe retrimmed in two tone grey alcantara. Although Im unsure as yet! Id really like to just enjoy the car for as long as I can now as next year may see it sold to aid other things brick and mortar related.

Hi guys, On to a little update then............... I havent had much time around the car recently due to having a nice break in Egypt. However whilst I was flat out on my sunbed I did spare a few thoughts in between beers for it. My thinking was something along the lines of....... "what can I do without spending anymore money this year but possibly make the car easier to drive? " Here's what I got up to when I got home........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip005-5.jpg

Spot the change?

If not here you go..........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip002-5.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novaturbowip001-4.jpg

Ive decided to remove the stubby mirrors for standard ones. They were something Ive always been unsure of on this build due to the car being practically stock on the outside. Plus they were never easy to live with due to the tiny glasses and the fact the front hoop of the cage blocks the majority of that tiny view anyway! So I rubbed down the stock ones and painted the covers in the same grey with matt finish as per the rest of the car. The frames were also treated the same way but with a smooth black matt finish. I didnt want to leave them plastic as nothing else on the car is! The finished result Im happy with and they are so much better to use its unreal!

Apart from that Ive just carried on trying to get some miles in on the dry nights were possible. Once the miles passed 500 my engine builder has been telling me to increase the varied load/revs and generally drive it harder so I have been doing so. Were now up to around 750 miles and Id like to try double that before the tax runs out and it goes away for winter. Thanks for reading! :)

Cheers Lewi.......... I have previously thought of either cav turbo wheels or th's in my current colour scheme. Would have to be 16's in th's for me though and I think they are even rarer than the 16" flat spoke mo's I currently have! We were similar to be honest........ Their was a squaddy I got to know quite well who had a similar build to yourself. He had locals trying to wind him up on one or two occasions when outside the complex. I think he just chose to head in the other direction as its not good to get in bother on their turf!!

I'm happy and upset at the same time.

Happy because mint novas are not getting broken for parts and genuine people seem to be buying them.

And upset because I can't afford them lol

Yeah Im glad I didnt have to go down that route but being honest I think Id have rather kept it than do that. Nova prices have been rising for sometime now and I feel its about time that those of us that choose to spend big money on them should get a fair price in return. Some will agree and some wont but its just my take on things. Id rather pay over the odds and have a right car than pay less and then spend a fortune making it into the car you could have bought cheaper anyway!

Edd

Cheers Edd, I dont think Ive ever had a keeper yet! My problem is once Im out of ideas and the projects complete I get board very easily and that was partially what led me to putting it up for sale. I will have something vauxhall again but Im looking at much more recent models than the nova now. Whether I ever own another will remain to be seen.

Cheers Scott, Yes Id say it definately made for an easier sale as he knew the car from when Shaun had it and bought the box from Jon Shield before Shaun had it!
Im not into sports at all to be honest so I can say "Never" on that one!

Hi Liam........ The colour I used was a custom mixed grey finished with a semi matt clear. You'd be best off going to your local paintshop and having them match something up for you.

soooo this thread is empty now Nick, I think you should get a budget snotter lol :)

Sooooooo Empty!! Tell me about it John........ No budget snotter for me Im afraid! My mind is already made up on the next project but It just may be a while coming thats all. We're currently applying to have some building work at home so I want to keep hold of all funds just in case we need extra etc. Once all housey things are complete then I'll go out and find myself a new toy.

I'll update with pics when I get the chance but yes its an exceptional original car throughout.

Nice one! You prized Rich's 1.2 off him?

I think Ive actually done a little better than that Si..... I know Rich's is good but when its comes to originality and condition this car would be hard to beat. I can only think of Cormacs off hand that would have the edge on it. It also has a genuine 15k which iirc is also lower than the other car in question.

08-01-12, 03:06 PM
Hi guys,

My apologies as it has been a while and I know many of you have been patiently waiting for an update! After parting company with A6VXL I had more or less decided that my next project wouldn't be another nova as I fancied something more up to date. But I did want to stay vauxhall as I enjoy some of the shows and have made many good friends on the scene along the way. So I started looking a corsa c's with the intention of either zleh/zlet but after viewing/driving a few already converted I was put off and decided they were not for me. Around the same time Brian Hartley came over to York in his nova for my dent guy to go round the full car for him. Now this crossed with a drunken early hours stint in Andy B's garage looking at two cracking novas is were it all went wrong.......... Brians car was sat in my garage nearly all day whilst it was being worked on and I had nothing to do but have a very detailed look round it. My findings pretty much amazed me as could not believe how original and stunningly clean it was. To cut a long story short over the next few weeks after I struck a deal with Brian and bought the car.

So the story goes a guy bought the car from Tipton Vauxhall (Midlands) new back in 1987 and not long after fell ill and was unable to drive. The nova sat in his garage unused for years until it was finally serviced/re mot'd and finally put up for sale. Brian saw it advertised and bought it in 2010 with only 12,000 miles on the clock! Whilst he owned it some of you will have seen the car at the billing vboa bash but it still hasn't seen a great deal of use. I think most of the miles he added to the car were the newcastle to northampton runs for those shows and apart from that its sat in his garage staying hidden from the typical english weather. Its still now only covered a low 15,000 miles! But regardless of the mileage its the condition that really interested me. I've spent hours going round this car and its so untouched its unreal. The only paint its seen is a small local repair on the boot but apart from that the rest is 100% original. I have even double checked this with a paint depth gauge! The few small dents it had were removed via paintless dent and the car is perfectly straight. I've never owned one as flawless! The underside looks like its never seen a jack as its all completely perfect. Rear chassis legs and round the back of the rear panel are immaculate as is the engine bay. The only thing I can actually fault it on is a very slight amount of corrosion on the rear arch lips but even this can only be seen on close inspection.

I even had the torch inside the crossmember looking below the drain holes and found nothing! It has to be one of the best remaining bases I could have found especially for the cost which was reasonable unlike you may have expected. Throughout Brians ownership the car remained completely stock whilst he saved his money for expensive parts he wanted. Until august last year when he got itchy feet and decided to add cesaros, lowering springs and a back box. Personally I like the look it has inside and out and I'm tempted to keep it almost identical. The only change will be under the bonnet with running gear to suit. The previous two novas I've owned which many of you know me for were initially put together by other people. Now I may have put a different spin on them but their was always something I wasn't a fan of. Or something I wouldn't have done like that. This being so original and untouched gives me the chance to spec and put together something completely to my taste throughout which is something I'm really looking forward to. It wont be anything that hasn't been seen before or anything with huge cost but just how I want it. Id like to source almost everything second hand too If I can! No new parts ftw! Lol.

This is the only downer........ we are currently looking at a possible house move due to Yorkshire water crushing development plans for our current house. So all funding for the car is on hold whilst we see what happens on the house front. In fact I nearly even sold the nova after recent interest from a mate which is why I haven't really bothered with updating as I didn't know what may happen. For now though I'm glad I still own it and look forward to being able to turn my ideas into reality as I've done with my previous projects. Updates may be few and far between for a while but I hope you've enjoyed reading a proper update as oppose to someone bumping the thread! Enjoy the pics guys.

Outside.......

It is exceptional indeed Edd.

Looking forward to seeing how you transform this!

You know the plans! Just may take a while thats all.

That's mint mate loving it :) are you sticking with cesaro's? Also I'm guessing this will be a let?

Ive always loved cesaros and would have had them on A6VXL however they wouldnt go over the brakes! I may keep this set unless I can find a particular set of wheels for it....

Christ thats clean, think its the cleanest ive ever seen underneath.

Glad thats its in the hands of someone that never fails to impress with your projects.

Cheers Adam, good to see you back on here!

Looks very very clean! Will deffinately be keeping an eye on this, even if the updates are few and far between ;)

Cheers fella, all in good time eh...

Looking clean mate !

Hopefully by the time Ive finished degreasing and detailing it should be a whole lot cleaner!

Looks similar to your red sr mate uber clean!

Nice clean shell, will keep an eye on this. I was gobsmacked at how clean the Swing was when I went to see it, just had to have it.

BTW, is it wise to show a pic of the V5 with Hartley's name and address on it? There are a lot of people after his blood!

Thanks Rich, I didnt think anything of it tbh the lad was always sound with me so I was always happy to help him. Now ammended anyhow.

Seen this a few times at Sunday 'cruises', looked clean

Yeah it was up your way for a while so Im guessing all you guys have seen it around. Nice buy by the way!

Those were another addition of Brians a short while back. Im going to remove them though and keep the whole lot stock. I added the mirror on the passenger side though as I think the blanks look crap.

I dont think it will be going anywere unless I had a good offer that is. Uber hard to come by in this sort of condition nowadays so Id rather keep it for the money Id get etc.
