shell just needs a paint job and drop the xe in then the inside doing . its only taken me 3 years so far lol
thanks kev
Hey Guys,
After my pics yest I thought I my as well as post how I came to the decisions for the car this year and the work Ive put in over the past few months.....
A few things I'd changed last year I decided maybe werent for the best so the red euro red lights were replaced by standard and euro items...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novanewspec024.jpg
Also the change to 15" RL7's was based on the fact I wanted to be a little different and that sometimes even though my front arches are rolled they did occasionally catch under enthusiastic driving when using the 16" speedlines on 45 profiles. But after billing last year I thought the car had lost a lot of its looks appeal so I purchased another set and painted them up only to find they didnt clear the front brakes!! This was rather weird as they were the same size and offset as my previous ones... However as Id sold my old speedlines to my missus younger brother for his corsa and he offered to swap so I just had the tyres swapped over. Unfortunatly he hadnt taken perfect care of them so I had to repaint them!
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip046-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip047-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip049-1.jpg
Another thing that has bugged me ever since owning the car was the front end alignment. It wasnt herrendous by any means but both ends of the grill had been shaved and one wing was non genuine!!! Shock horror a non genuine panel on my car!!! Plus I think mesh grilles had had their day so I quite fancied a change to a standard item. Two mint genuine wings and a grill were purchased. The grill was used and had been melted in at the rear so I had to spend ages masking up as I didnt want any overspray on the slats.......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip077-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip076-1.jpg
And the finished article.......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip080-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip034-1.jpg
Also Id noticed a fair few red novas have started to have their bumpers done black. This wasnt the case around 4 years ago when my car was first built and was done to be a little different at the time. So I started thinking different again!!! After a few calls and a long wait Id bought a custom carbon bonnet.... I wanted it to go on full standard fittings and be fully carbon on the inside too! Unfortunatly the first bonnet I got sent had no bracket for the safety so was sent back and another was made. Once recieved I was a bit dissapointed with the finish. It was rather dull and were the two skins bond together along all four edged was full of big holes!! All edges were to too skins were joined the gel coat folded over wasnt pretty. Dont get me wrong it was still a good product but I wanted it to be perfect! So I made a £550 decision to treat it!
To get rid of all the rough holey edges I decided I needed to build up the edges so I had something to rub at and fill. So I rubbed down the inside and edges of the bonnet...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip004-2.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip006-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip003-5.jpg
And then sealed and lacqeured them....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip013-2.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip012-3.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip011-1.jpg
This gave the edges the build I needed to be able to rub at etc as well as improving the inside of the bonnet a hell of a lot. I left it to dry for a few days before carefully rubbing and filling all four edges.....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip031-2.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip032-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip032-1.jpg
With the edges fettled I decided thinking about colours for the edges as they were just black bonding glue before It didnt go as well as it could have so I opted for the same colour as when I did all my carbon interior trims which is a dark grey and goes a lot better than black in my opinion. The front and rear of the bonnet were masked up and the edges painted...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip038-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip037-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip036-2.jpg
This was the result after demasking. Four straight good looking edges with no holes in a more suiting colour!!! I know it looks a little light here but it will darken after lacqeuring later. At this point it was again left for a few days.
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip042-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip041-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip040-1.jpg
Cant wait to see it on the car :thumb:
Id also quite liked the look of these headlight protectors so I aquired one then another. They were used and rather gravel rashed so I got thinking and thought Id treat them. Rubbed down to 3000 grade on the outer then masked up on the inside ready for treatment.....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip020-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip019-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip021-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip022-1.jpg
These were then plastic primed and lacqeured. The result is'nt very clear in a photo but they look like brand new!

After looking a Big chaps motor last year I really liked his cambelt cover so after getting some measurements from him I abused a spare cambelt cover......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip002-2.jpg
More on that later! At this point the car was stripped to this in prep for the new front end........
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip113-1.jpg
Your attention to detail is absolutely stunning Nick! such a real shame you've not decided to use the bonnet, after all that hard work!
Awesome work as expected from you....

Cheers Chris.. with you guys this year so we'll have to have a few beers :)
Ok so on with a little more as Ive uploaded some more pics. The two wings Id sourced needed a few modifications. Side repeater holes were welded upand filled, wheel arches were rolled over and sealed to prevent any moisture getting in at all. Once that was done I was ready to prime them......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip088-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip085-1.jpg
I even found the original stickers behind the waxoil on the insides!!

These were then left for a week to allow for any movement in the primer.

top work as always , now paint my mirrors and rocker cover :P
The wings were carefully blocked down and were prepared ready for paint. I actually painted these twice as red's have a poor opacity (covering power) they need a lot of coats so I bodied them up with 4 coats of ferrari waterbase paint and lacqeured them. Only to later rub them down and give them 3 coats of ICI solid colour which is exactly what the car was painted in. My theory behind this was to get an exact match and not have to blend any other panels etc. This is how they came out note insides too!! :)

Perfection!!! :)
Over the past few months Ive also decided to rid my car of the chrome engine covers and bling added last year. Ive always liked simple but effective cars so although Id slid from the path in a way after looking at cars like andy bishops I realised clean items dont have to be shiney! They can be nice and subtle as well by just being painted. So another item was painted up ready to replace the old one....

I know where im sending the Audi when it needs repainting then!!
Top work Nick!!

Awesome attention to detail Nick, car is looking immense if I do say so. The way you do every job to perfection is just outstanding.
I'm trying to take a leaf out of your book from that perspective, to get anywhere near as good standard would please me no end.

im a bit of a C/F lover myself and shiny chrome but i wanna use mine come rain or shine so think chrome is prob a bit of a nono! fresh paint is the answer, clean and simple
i just want the top part of the dash doing, matbe the window switch panel
ive been speaking with Getflocked , but having read your thread ive contacted Raj so ill be getting a quote from him this week! see how the prices compare

yours is awesome,FACT pat yourself on the back
Cheers Sparkie and mike!
Tom, cheers looks like your project is coming along well, im spying expensive parts! :)
Update time. One thing I always thought was a great look on novas is painted wheelarches I just could never be bothered to do it! So anyway I got myself into gear and cracked on. 3 coats of hammerite followed by a finishing coat of ferrari red bodycolour gave the result I was after......

An excellent look I think.....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip126-2.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip115-1.jpg
They took a while to do as said but Im really happy with the finished articles :)
Constantly amazed my the quality of this car, makes me wonder whether I've got to step up the quality of my build
Also another idea Ive had is to remove my false floor and paint the back out like Ive seen on martin kelsons etc. But as Im not going all out for a fuel cell etc yet I needed something to fill the spare wheel hole. So a fifth speedline was sourced and prepared and painted.....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip100-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip101.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip048.jpg
I'll tyre it up once the back of the car is finished then I know It'll get used and not just sit in the loft! :)
I also acquired two used but good cond vauxhall flashers as mine were found to be non genuine and obviously would help things when I come to line the front end up etc. After a jet wash and a blow dry they were as good as new.....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip140-1.jpg
One part that has continued to elude me for the past few years I came by the other week at sensible money. Thanks to matt and Big chap for their input with this. Its was a bit scratched and dull but I can soon sort that out!
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip120-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip119.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip117.jpg
This went to work and was sanded down to remove any imperfections whatsoever then I took it down the wet and dry grades finally finishing in 3000 and polishing it up...

Painted inner arches look the business mate! You going to fire a back ARB in there as well ?
Trust you to spot that Vaughan, is there anything you don't notice?
I also acuired some used but excellent cond v6/turbo discs so the edges/hub areas were etched and painted. They came out like this.....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/partsforsale001-1.jpg
Ive always preferred the look of drilled items and they'll just be a straight swap as I already have the v6 setup on. Thats it for tonight but some more on the bonnet tommorow once pics are uploaded.

Sorry fella, I sold one 3 yrs back... took me until now to get another.. they are rare as poop!
Sparkie... no worries... its hard to find something that hasnt been done before tbh all peoples ideas mainly come from other peoples cars just like many of mine have.
Great skills with the old paint gun as usual. Impressive stuff!
I know what you mean about painting the inner arches too. Absolute ballache to get them proper clean and then a nice colour-coded finish.

Cheers Martin, although its still not perfect however each year Im trying to do more to make the car better, I feel it will be years until I can compete with yours to be quite honest!
Matt..... cheers fella! :)
Todays update.... Back to the bonnet then, After the edges had dried I rubbed down the back of the bonnet and the freshly painted edges to relacqeur them thus finishing the underside. Heres how it came out....
Front masked up...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip057.jpg
Turned over and ready in the booth.. Note all fitting holes were filled with something or masked up to prevent bolts or fittings from not wanting to wind in or work properly at bonnet fitting time! :)
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip058.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip059-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip060.jpg
And all relacquered....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip063-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip064.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip063-1.jpg
That was again left a week to dry as carbon cant be force dried (Baked) and I didnt want the underside to be marked when it was on a stand which can happen when lacqeur is still soft. The lacqeur had built up a little on the edges so these were rubbed back down before I continued with the rest of the bonnet face......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip056.jpg
Once it was prepared I got it ready in the booth and sealed and lacqeured it.
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip068-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip070-1.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/Novawip071-1.jpg
You can see above how the edges now appear a lot darker and in sinc with the rest of the bonnet. It came out of the booth almost perfect only one or two dirt nibs to deal with after its been sat a week or so.
Then it was back onto fitting the wings that were painted previously. Heres a shot of the wing on and me checking headlight alignment. With the non genuine wing/flasher that was on previously the aligment wasnt the best. Here however with all genuine items it seems to be lots better... not quite perfect but better! :)

I'd love to see the bonnet with red paint on top.
I'd love to see the bonnet with red paint on top.
I paint a asrea mk4 vented carbon bonnet a few years back, cause it was cracked on the edge we blew it in around the out sides only about 3" in, looked sweet as it blended out and became carbon.
I'd love to see the bonnet with red paint on top.
You know I did actually consider that!... It was my backup plan in case I didnt like it on the car! Only the outside though.. inside would be left as carbon etc.
More updates on route later if I get chance!
Cheers Craig,matt,dj browney etc.

I don't think I could afford such a quality job anyway lol
What was the reason for not using the carbon bonnet in the end, just didn't fit/look right?

I was coming to that shortly!! But as youve asked.. the look I was happy with tbh. And gap wise it fits well. Its the main catch thats causing a problem.... On a standard nova bonnet it has a floating thread to allow adjustment. The thread in the carbon bonnet is fixed thus no adjustment. This is the problem as the main catch wont go into the hole in the slam panel as its positioned too far forward. I was talking to Mike the other day and he's going to try work something out so it can work. But to be honest I cant see it working without forgetting the standard catches and going to pins/aerocatches which is a look I really dont want. But Lets see what he can come up with. I doubt it will be sorted in time for this years shows however. Im just gutted at the amount of effort Ive put in (40hrs plus) I guess its my own fault in a a way as I didnt obey the golden rule and trial fit first. Aftermarket panels eh who'd buy them!

Why not move the hole in the slam panel - easy to cut out a square around it - reposition it, reweld, fill and sand - plus only a small area to repaint
Easy !!!!
After all the effort you've put into the bonnet - it would be criminal not to use it
Dave

I see what your saying Dave, just after what it cost I expected it to fit! but hey Im sure we'll sort it somehow... were theres a will etc!
To be fair the guy probably has his measurements for the bonnet fine, of off a different +/-5mm nova :( There'll be a reason they're adjustable on standard bonnets! Sorry for disrupting the timeline btw lol I'm a carbon whore too, was wondering where my favourite weave was :D

Yeh - I would expect it to fit - but too late to look back now - too many hours spent on the bonnet not to use it
I can only seeing the bonnet hole relocation taking a couple of hours to sort out your problem - the panel beating/welding guys at your place should have it done in less than an hour, ready for you to throw some paint at it

Hi, Yes to be honest I imagine your correct in what you say and to be fair Mike has said he'll look into fixing the problem and I cant ask fairer than that. Just waiting to here back from him at the moment.
Dave.... Thanks and yes I agree I cant see it taking too long however after all the man hours the car has had now its taxed for the time being Im giving it no more!! I want to drive it as much as possible without fail every weekend at least. Once the cars off the road again I'll look into sorting the slam panel so the bonnet will work. I'll just enjoy the other things Ive done this year to improve the car for now. Im a patient person and I will get there in the end! :)
Scott... Thanks fella. Im sure its not as rough as you make out! I remember seeing it not so long back at chris's unit and it looked tidy enough then! If all goes well I'll be at pv as well as billing.
Chris.. you have pm
Rick... lmao!
Thats a bit of a bugger on the fit ment.

Nick, if the bonnet doesn't get sorted and you don't like Dave's idea on your own slam panel why not go for the old removable slam panel trick with Daves idea, you could get a spare one and change it depending on what bonnet you want to run.
Evening all, A bit of a jump from the last pics as I seem to have lost a few from the camera! I managed to get the other new wing, grille and repeaters on and get the front end back together. As said previously the front end alignment is much better now all gm parts are fitted. Still not perfect ( Im very fussy!) but without removing the slam panel and starting again I feel its as good as it will get Ive seen many ten times worse so Im going to live with it. Most of you will have read on the past page or so the bonnet is causing a few problems! But hopefully this will be sorted in due course. Even if its not until the car comes off the road again etc. The following are pictures from last saturday when the car was back on the road for the first time this year some of you may have seen them in the general section etc but Im sure it wont hurt to post them in here too! Enjoy....

My thoughts on the carbon 400 mirrors however have changed as I thought they would compliment the bonnet perfectly... But Im tempted to go back to red mirror shells for the time being??? I also painted up some standard mirrors at work today so I may use them instead? Opinions welcome on this good or bad dont be shy. :)

It is possible Jeff I'll have to see how I get on. I was pretty upset the other day but Im going to forget about it for now and just enjoy driving the car.
Benn...... Bummer eh! lol

Cars looking mint Nick - Can't wait for a closer look at the shows
I'd keep the Carbon 400 mirrors though - It's not something you see every day on a nova ( or any other car come to think of it !!) so would make it a bit more different
Good call Jeff - removable slam panel would be a good fix - quick enough to do now with the standard red bonnet but would allow a second panel to be modified when you get a spare minute for the carbon bonnet

Nick, i'm loving the updated pics from the weekend, after slatting the grill will you be slatting the bumper?
PS: cheques on its way
Thanks Dave... That was my initial idea I like to try and think outside the box from time to time to make the car a little different. Your obviously the same as Ive seen and used many of your excellent ideas in the past. :)
Jeff, If I ever want to remove that brace Its yours fella. As for the bumper it was the first change I ever made to the car with myself and mate putting in a good amount of effort in to it so it looked well done. I still really like it and they dont seem to be as common anymore so I'll be sticking with it.
Nick, can you not just redrill the hole in the bonnet for the dick?

The thread is bonded between the two skins fella... I wouldnt want to go down that road as if it went wrong it may damage the bonnet and the work Ive put in. Thanks for the thought though! :)

Tv have shown an interest/taken details on the car for the past two years at billing however didnt later get back to me and in a way I was glad so I didnt persue it as I dont see the car as finished. At the end of the day Nick, with cars like this they will never be finished! When you get to the top end, there will always be somthing you want to improve on. It doesnt matter how good you get the car, you will never feel it is perfect. But that is part of the fun!
Your car is 1000x better than 95% better than the cars appearing in TV, including mine! So i say persue it, and get the recognition you deserve.

HI Nick, i just aquired some brand new red-dot for £20 and liked the look with the paint, what did you paint these with, where they primed first
Jeff, what you want is an acid based etch primer. It bites into the surface and wont flake, then I just used a silver aerosol to finish. pretty simple tbh just read the label on the tins/aerosol and make sure the primer you buy has etching qualities and you should be fine fella. :)

Hi all, Update time once again, Something Ive always liked the look of is a fully stripped out rear on the nova (Inspiration coming from Dec Burke and Martin kelsons cars etc.) As mine has always had a false floor in the back Its something that wouldnt take much effort to sort really and the biggest bonus is.... Its FREE! and as we all know free mods are always the best! Anyhow so I got cracking. For those of you that havent seen the back of my car before it looked like this.....

Quarter cards, false floor, rear arch upholstery all out. I then started on the sound deadening, I was thinking of leaving the spare wheel well pieces in as i thought the wheel thats going in there may scratch the paint etc but Ive taken it out for now to see how it looks once painted. I may put some back in there yet. One thing I did notice was how heavy it is!! I had a bag full after removing said pieces from the back, No wonder the track guys remove it all. A few shots after said stripping note original car colour under the sound deadening!........
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip157-1.jpg?t=1241358862
It was good to see the boot floor, rear panel, all drain holes are all intact as to be honest Ive never removed the floor to look under there in the last three/four years! Anyhow once all the sound deadening was out I cleaned up all the excess glue and stuff then rubbed down all the inside completely so its super smooth....

I made a few small repairs to a couple of areas of seam sealer which had been guaged previously. Next up is to etch prime the bare metal and Im going to "body up" the back of the car using a red aerosol which can later be rubbed again before the final coats of paint go on. The reason for this is red can take a lot of coats to cover and it will save me a hell of a lot of time in the booth by doing it this way. The remaining seat brackets etc will be drilled off once the car goes to work. Im hoping it looks as well as some others Ive seen in the past. :)

Tbh Ive seen quite a few over the years who have had it exactly the same. Mot testers have never had a problem with it on mine either. But I do agree with what your saying and hopefully I'll source a different brace and it will be changed in due course.

Unless you're going to weld in the brace I wouldn't fix the harnesses to one, get some eye bolts and some clips and fix them in that way.

Strewth Nick! You dont stop!
I'm sure it'll be fine. My felling on the harness/brace is the same. If the harnesses were tugged in an impact, bolted to the damper tops means the offset in the ends of the brace, they would kinda rotate, meaning a bent brace, or possibly the tops of the damper piston.

Update time chaps, Had a few nights in the garage this week and got the rear of the car fully prep'd, etch primed and then using a red aerosol Ive half coloured up the rear too. As said earlier this will save me a fair amount of time in the booth hopefully on friday evening after work. As I couldnt source any new grommets I left the ones I had in a tin full of cheap thinner overnight. This stripped the paint from them so they almost look like new which is a bonus as in my opinion painted grommets look pants. So heres where we are now........

Will look perfect all painted up. Really wanna see this car in the flesh.

ive been through most pages on this thread and attention to detail just wows me,in all honesty the car never left the line in better condition, credit to you nick, just utter Exellence
ps i know every page on this thread has the kind of comment ive made, but it realy is an exeption.(id build an extra room in the house personaly for this car:) :thumb:
At billing last year I came up with an idea I thought at the time was original. (I now know there are some around) I liked the idea of having carbon manta mirrors. So I asked a few people who are in that business and no one was willing to completely make them from scratch. So I opted for the next best thing and sent some covers to Don fulford... They came back great as I was very happy with them until One day I spotted some on ebay! And these were the real deal one hundred percent carbon. So I purchased them straightaway leaving me with two sets of mirror covers.....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip161.jpg?t=1241639763
Just with the small difference of one set being whole carbon fibre and weighing in 20g per cover lighter than a standard set... get me weight saving!!
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip160.jpg?t=1241639812
Unfortunatly with the bonnet not likely to see the car for this years shows Ive been a little undecided about them as I thought they would compliment the bonnet perfectly. So for now I decided to sell the Don fulford covers and painted up some more covers in body colour today at work and got them back on the car this eves.....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip162.jpg?t=1241640043
Given the carbon panels etc in your interior, I think they'd fit in with the car perfectly with or without the carbon bonnet :)
One last thing for this eves then. I noticed my new wheel centres were coming unstuck the other day and as they are not even a month old I wasnt best pleased! At first I thought it may have been my fault in not degreasing before putting the new centres into place but on further investigation I noticed they are a two part sticky item and the two pieces were coming apart from each other! I keep browing ebay for some original black speedline items like I used to have but to no avail at the moment so I got these instead......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip168.jpg?t=1241640577
Id really like to find some original black speedline jobbies and I know you cant get them new.. only the silver ones are available now but hey these will just have to do for now. I dont think they look too bad. Thats it for tonight hopefuly some more progress at the weekend. :)
Nick.

Thats one stunning Nova you have there Nick, hopefully see it out this year, maybe on the way to PV if you are cruisin down with Me, Tim and Wudgey!! Keep up the good work fella!! :thumb: :)
Looks stunning mate, the quality of your work is unreal. Your car was the one that insipred me to do my nova with a black and red colour scheme, not like mine has lived up to yours though!
Looks like ive just copied you nova kid! Took me too long to type it lol
Kev.... performance trim sorted them for me.
Twisty,Ben.mk999,Novakid,Bola...... cheers guys much appreciated. :)

Love the mirrors. Wheel badges look cool too.
Love the mirrors. Wheel badges look cool too.
Cheers Benn! I went out for a short spin this eves.... After driving my missus streetka round for the past god knows how many months Its like getting into a rocketship!! One thing I didnt actually think of tho when removing the falsefloor and sound deadening was how noisy the car may become. Now I understand why some in similar cars wear earmuffs! lol The noise was bloody deafening! I cant believe how much noisier the car is tbh.. however it all adds to the fun.. I came home with a big smile on my face. :)

Thanks Paul, I may be changing the mirrors shortly tbh Im undecided yet.
Another update on route shortly folks. :)
Hi all, Well things went to plan and I got the car to work on Friday, One of our panel chaps removed the unwanted brackets at dinner time for me meaning I could crack on in the evening. Unfortunatly the weather changed around 430pm and totally holed it down completely soaking the car. (First time its been wet since billing last year! lol ) This slowed things down as even after leathering it off I didnt want to paint a damp car as some of you paint chaps know bagging up a wet car can cause the paintwork to sweat. This leaves marks that are a real pain to get rid of. So my plan was to prep the inside and mask it up ready to mask the outside of the car saturday morning once it had dried out etc. Here's how I got on.........
Unwanted bracketry removed....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip169.jpg?t=1241881790
Bracket areas cleaned up and filled (sorry next few are phone photo's and a bit dark!).....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/GetAttachment1.jpg?t=1241882764
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/GetAttachment2.jpg?t=1241883028
With the bracket areas cleaned up I gave them a quick coat of primer and then a few coats of aerosol red as a body up for saturday morning. Then I pulled the car into the booth and masked the inside off.....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip170.jpg?t=1241883255
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip172.jpg?t=1241883284
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip171.jpg?t=1241883311
I also had to mask it so I was able to get access to the front of the rear seating area so I could paint past were the carpet will sit etc. Damn fidly! But just enough access to get the gun in at either side.....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip173.jpg?t=1241883404
And a random shiny shot!.........
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip174.jpg?t=1241883481
That was how the car was left friday evening. I didnt get as far as I wanted but as said I didnt want to paint the car whilst it was damp. Least it will by dry for the next morning though. :)
Nick.
Back in work early saturday I got the rest of the car masked up and just had a quick scotch over the areas that had seen some aerosol action yesterday. (Didnt want any flaky paint later!) Once that was done a good blowgun and tack off and we were almost ready for paint......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip175.jpg?t=1241884033
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip177.jpg?t=1241884128

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip180.jpg?t=1241884310
I also stuck some masking bag into the drain holes to try and prevent unwanted overspray underneath the car and possibly making its way under the masking bag onto the exterior paintwork.....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip183.jpg?t=1241884390
Then a quick go with this fella ( painters best friend!) and we were ready to go....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip184.jpg?t=1241884562
All based up........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip187.jpg?t=1241884713
Then the finali being a couple of coats of lacqeur......

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip195.jpg?t=1241885186
With the inside painted I still had a thought there may be some unwanted moisture behind trims etc so I thought it best to demask the exterior of the car and let it airdry until tommorow when I can demask the inside and get the car home....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip197.jpg?t=1241885312
And how the car was left until tommorow...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip196.jpg?t=1241885367
Hope you all like. Its the first time Ive had a nova almost fully stripped and painted on the inside. But I think it looks really well plus I've done a little weight saving! Lets hope I can put up with the noise! lol Thats all for today.

Looking excellent as ever Nick! What's that Stat-Gun do, some sort of static charge to help the paint stick??
Also, I know all about the marks in the paint from bagging a wet car, I had to store mine outside when I was buildng it, and think the car cover trapped moisture against the fresh paint. How can I get rid of the marks, normal claying/polishing hasn't done anything!

Hey Chris, The stat gun basically charges the surface you point it at and helps deter dust or anything such like giving you hopefully a flawless finish. It sounds like you may have the marks Ive been talking about... In short they are a nitemare to get rid of! But gently flatting the surface with say 2000 wet/dry and then using a machine polisher with an abrasive polish will get rid of them permanantly. Im sure Craig may be able to help you with it or if your ever in my neck of the woods let me know... I may be able to sort it for you. :)
Nick.
I found th only way of getting rid of the watermarks with to flat and polish them out....
Dude the insides look funking fantastic. Very very nice work!

Afternoon Guys, Ive been at work since 8.00am and only just got the car home into the garage. I went back into work this morning and cracked on demasking taking it nice and steady as I didnt want to mark any fresh paintwork, Once it was fully demasked I gave it a good coat of wax which then led to me doing the full car! Also whilst I was there I applied some fresh waxoil here and there. Followed by a quick vac out and it was ready for home! Anyhow heres some pics of the almost finished article just the quarter cards to go in followed by my fifth allesio as a spare once I get a tyre on it in the next few weeks. Enjoy the pics Im really pleased how its finished up, I drove it home with a big smile on my face! :)

Hey Dec,
Thanks and yes it is possible to re route the cable... Phil lofthouse has done it and told me to follow the main loom through the n/s/r quarter and out of the sunroof drain tube under the n/s/r light then simply cable tie it to a brake pipe underneath. I doubt It will get done before pv or billing as Ive just got too much on and other things yet to finish on the car, maybe next year though. :)

Hey guys,
Little update as Ive been busy with one or two new parts, Firstly was something I won from the bay, and actually something Ive only ever seen one of before on (Dan16v's) car. This being a carbon fibre front wiper backplate. It arrived a bit rough around the edges and covered in silver overspray. But did look well made/shaped etc, And After a good flat down/tidy up and a coat of sealer/lacqeur I had it looking as good as new....
Before...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/ce24_12.jpg?t=1242321046
And after...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip221.jpg?t=1242321352
Its come out really well, should look subtle whilst being individual etc. :)
very nice!!
lovely motor mate, alot of work has gone into this and its one serious nice bit of kit!!

I was watching this on the bay too was wondering when you were going to get one Nick

i was biding on that !!!!
looks much better now tho !!
spot on
And the other new item/s would be mirrors... again (yes I know what your thinking lol ) But Im always on the lookout for parts that are rare and will give the car individuality. After speaking to Gaz on here he said he would make me up some stubby mirrors but I would finish/prime/paint and sort the glasses to make life easier as I know he's got other things going on at the moment that are more important. So a BIG thanks to him for these I couldnt wait to recieve them all in two days too!.... top work mate! Heres how they arrived...........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip207.jpg?t=1242323033
Then after a bit of prep/rubbing/sanding and masking they were on a stand in the booth ready for some adhesion promoter and high build primer.......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip213.jpg?t=1242323146
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip215.jpg?t=1242323170
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip216.jpg?t=1242323197
Then after 3 coats of high build they were starting to take shape...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip218.jpg?t=1242323259
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip219.jpg?t=1242323288
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip217.jpg?t=1242323314
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip220.jpg?t=1242323342
I then gave them a coat of guidecoat and left them to air dry for a rub down tommorow. :)
I also after a little advice from fearless (cheers Dave!) I got cracking with the glasses for them. Im trying to retain the original items so the adjuster works etc. So I removed the glasses from the plastic backplates and removed all the glue from them ready for shortening. I was quite worried I would break the glasses at this point but I took my time and It paid off as I dint break anything! Plenty of time for that yet though! Heres were I am with them at the moment....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip211.jpg?t=1242323853
Im really going to take my time on these so they hopefully finish up looking really well and factory like. Thanks again to Gaz and Dave for help with these. :) More hopefully within the next few days.

However Everytime I do something I try to make it as good as I can so maybe one day it may be up there with the best of them. How thick is your wiper plate?? Mine is pretty thick (approx 4mm) I think so hopefully should be up to the job. :)
John, cheers fella, much appreciated..... must catch up and have a chat at billing. :)
Will be sure to nick, can't wait to see your car again!
sexy as fook , would deffo have it in my garage
Cheers John!
328I...... thanks fella.
Little update then guys, Ive recently dropped a few parts with a few different guys to be modified slightly...... Fearless brace is getting countersunk around the holes so I can use it on standard topmounts, My fifth allesio has been dropped off to have toyo t1r 40 attached to it and also A friend of mine with a selection of holesaws is cutting me a circular piece from a sheet of carbon to be used for blanking the sender unit hole. So whilst Im waiting for them bits to return Ive been cracking on with the stubby mirrors and building up the back of the car etc. In short the stubby mirrors are a pain!! Due to how they are made Ive never wanted to force dry (bake) them so its been air dry all the way which is a burden when you want to get things done! Anyhow after rubbing down the primer on them I noticed there was still a few imperfections so I opted to reprime them to be on the safe side......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip225-1.jpg?t=1242755770
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip222-1.jpg?t=1242755813
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip226.jpg?t=1242755854
Repriming them at this stage should not only help stop movement in the primer but allow me to really block the edges to achieve good lines and shape etc. Once rubbed down I got them cleaned off and ready for paint, Ive kept thinking about which way round to do things.... Red first, black first etc?? But I decided to opt for the red as I think this will be the easier option and I thought if I paint the whole mirrors in red to begin with at least if Id missed any imperfections on the frames Id have more build to rub at before I put the black on if you get were Im coming from? Anyhow after work this eves I got red on, looking good........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip234.jpg?t=1242756602
Although they've taken a fair bit of work Im really happy with how there coming on. All being well in a few days time I'll tape them off a apply the matt black to the frame parts of the mirrors for the standard look etc. On another note though a quick shot of the back of the car now back together just awaiting the fifth allesio in the wheel well which I should be collecting tommorow.......

Kev.... thanks!
Joe... likewise!
Craig... As theres not many sets been made I dont really have an idea on how stubby they are tbh. Going to Matt's on sunday so I may take one and compare size with the ones fearless did for brett etc. As Gaz made some previously for himself Id imagine finished they'll look pretty much how his own set do size wise etc... Quite short/stubby! (pic of his below) :)

I can defiantely say no we wont be in the nova, I think I may be dropping it off sat for discs/pads changing and one or too other mechanical bits sorting. I'll get matt to give you a shout and see if your around when we are sunday etc. :)
Small update today then guys, Back on with the mirrors again, With the help of one of the chaps from work we made up some cardboard templates and ensured they fitted correctly before cutting down the plastic backplates...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip242.jpg?t=1243097154
Once we were happy with these the backplates were cut down, sanded around the edges and clipped into place...

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip244.jpg?t=1243097306
I'd also Had a word with our glass guy who removes all our glass at work regarding cutting down the glasses, He managed to cut them down without cracking them but they've been cut a little too short! So once I get my hands on some more we'll have another go!
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip243.jpg?t=1243097659
Also I was out in the nova again today, and still cant get over how noisy it is!! To be honest I think It'll be the last car I strip out! If I actually used it more regular the sound deadening and false floor would definatly be going back in lol

Cheers Gaz, The chap has a diamond tipped scorer which is the correct tool for the job, he cut them in seconds! just a shame they were not quite right... hopefully second time lucky. Your motor looks well all polished up fella, shame I dont have a couple of grand sat about as Id be tempted.

Cheers corsa1986 and sparkie... hope the servo arrived ok etc?
Ok Ive been doing a few little bits again this week, First off ever since this car was built up approx 5 years ago now its been missing its roof gutter trims and I tried to get them from vauxhall but was always told only one side was available and at that time I didnt know that one side fit both sides etc! But on my last trip to Matt's I mentioned this to him and he said a mate of his had some in original packaging unused! A quick text and a deal was done (£25 well spent in my opinion!) However as my window surrounds are all painted satin black the grey trims would look obviously out of place so I got them rubbed down and after a quick coat of plastic primer they got the satin black treatment.......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip264.jpg?t=1243609198
Then clipped on later that evening.......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip271.jpg?t=1243609305
Also after getting my spare wheel tyred up I went about placing it in the wheel well only to find the plastic threaded piece wasnt long enough! Doh! So after looking through some old total vauxhall mags I noticed a friend of mine (Phil lofthouse) Had a 7J wheel in his wheel well and as my allesio is 6.5J I thought I'd send a text asking how he'd gone about it etc. The solution being pretty simple in a long bolt that actually works with the original plastic retainer. So off I went to my local fastening place with the two wheel retainer pieces only to find we couldnt actually find something that would work directly with the plastic retainer piece but Using a long bolt, few washer and a wingnut on top of the plastic retainer It all works safely and nips down as it should. By possibly shaving a little off the edges of the retainer I could also slip a washer on top which would work even better. I'll sort this when Im back in work next week........

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip268.jpg?t=1243609414
Lastly for today, I've been on with the stubby mirrors again. After leaving the red to dry for a week or so as I had to let them airdry I thought Id get the black on them finishing the paintwork side of things off (Just glasses to complete them now!) here's how I got on. Masked up.........
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip247.jpg?t=1243609477
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip248.jpg?t=1243609507
And painted with a few coats of satin black to go with window surrounds etc......
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/novawip249.jpg?t=1243609543
I used a fineline tape in the edges which you can remove straightaway whilst the paint is wet to give a super straight fineline. Demasked and left in the booth to dry.......

I must say Im really pleased with how these have turned out. Once the new glasses I picked up from phil yesterday are cut I cant wait to see them on the car! As I know you'll probably read this.... cheers to Phil for help on with the spare wheel issue and for supplying me with another set of glasses to finish the stubby's with. Much appreciated fella :thumb: Thats it for now guys hopefully more next week :)
