i know some of you will be thinking "f*cking hell i wouldnt use that much filler and fibergalss, id just buy 2 new doors"... well this is free to me and tbh i couldnt give 2 hoots about it being filler lol. it wont rust like this for a very very long time especially with metallic filler.. so im happy all day long. the doors are structurally sound they are very very motn doors but its the outer skin thats gone, so rtaher than chucking too perfectly useable doors and wasting ??? on a new set i may aswell use there, what people dont realise is that the bottom where they usually go is mint on mine.. thats why im not throwing them away, because their repairable.

fantastic!! eventually some real progress!:thumb:

And it only took 126 pages lol

Getting both sides resprayed or what then?

Dave.
15-03-08, 11:44 PM
yep.. both full sides.. paint will match better that way, plus the arches were flaking so i was going to do them both anyway, then i thought i may aswell do the dent son ym wings that the caunts did when they vandalised it! :thumb:

16-03-08, 05:17 PM
Nice work.
Are you doing all the masking yourself?

Dave.
16-03-08, 07:19 PM
i should be yes.. will have the help of my other uncle whos spraying at aswell like.. hes a prop sprayer, my dads an expert on engines, my uncle kev's a expert on body work, and my uncle rob is a expert on painting.. good family to have lol. dont want to remove the glass or bumpers tho as the front was quite hard to get on and the front window frames are a pain to get in and out.. think its possible?

NovaLad
16-03-08, 07:24 PM
TBH if your having all that done i wouldn't be moaning about removing bumpers or glass or window surrounds as i would want it to be done properly etc.. so i would remove them if i was you instead of boding over them because you can't be bothered to remove. lol

Dave.
16-03-08, 07:26 PM
you just wait till you have to fit your front window surrounds.. then youll realise why i dont want to remove them lol

NovaLad
16-03-08, 07:34 PM
Oh well you could end up regretting it further down the line just because you couldn't be bothered david!

Dave.
16-03-08, 07:41 PM

draper
16-03-08, 09:19 PM
you will spend forever masking up the window frames and bumpers

Dave.
16-03-08, 09:27 PM
im planning on just askign ym uncle whats the best option to do. im going to remove things like lights and some glass etc that cnan be removed easilly, but bumpers we can mask off with tape and painting paper because the geps are quite big down the sides.

Go Dave!!!!!

Dave.
24-03-08, 05:56 PM
just got back from wales, cars now all ready for paint, just got to finish off 2 patches tomorrow, then hopefully off to paint sometime this week :thumb:

all i did was attempt to make a cav digi clock fit my dash, but after hours of messing about i gave up, so whilst my clocks were out i decided to have a tidy up of the wiring to make the clocks sit flusher to the dashboard, as on the right they never sat perfect and the clock shroud looked raised at the bottom right

anyway.. before:
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/DSC00233.jpg

final update before spraying..

all prepped now, metallic filler added to all treated areas to minimize the chance of rust returning, all sanded sown lovely and smooth, took us 3 or 4 times to get the drivers door perfect, but other than that 110% happy with the results. hopefully getting sprayed next week or mabey even this week.. so watch for updates

the nova looking sorry for itself but 100x better than before lol

TIP 1 -something that i learnt when I did my 1st respray

have you used cellulose putty on the filled sections?

If not I'd recommend giving it a skim. Filler (even the "metal" stuff) will have trapped bubbles in it when mixing - when you sanded it down these micro bubbles will come to the surface. You cant really see them - until you paint the car - then they appear like little pin holes! Even through primer.

Give it a quick skim of cellulose putty to seal the filler - smooth back with 800 grit and then your ready to paint - will save you lots of agro in the long run.

TIP 2 - if youre not removing the windscreen/rear back screen to prevent a hard paint edge where the masking tape meets the rubber of the surround, get some washing line and wedge it under the rubber to lift it up off the body - mask off then paint - the lifted edge will cause a gap and prevent a hard edge.

TIP 3 - use decent maksing tape and as soon as the paints dry get it off! Masking tape when covered in paint loses its solvent onto the masked ares and if left can be a biatch to remove - especially if its bog standard stuff!

Dave.
26-03-08, 11:49 PM
apparently theres something better than putty out atm, so my uncle will putty it when it is at his, pin holes are a cnut i know.. ahd them before on other cars

its only getting 2 sides sprayed, boot and windscreen are going un-touched

masking will all be done by my uncle :thumb:

lee coley
27-03-08, 08:24 AM
Dont use 'putty' to fill pin holes.prime it up then use 2k filler and wipe it in the pin holes before you block the primer down, then once all the primer is sanded down check for more pin holes,

Eastham
27-03-08, 06:05 PM
I ditto that

Dave.

28-03-08, 08:53 PM
you didnt rub that filler down with water .... did you ????

Dave.
28-03-08, 08:59 PM
no no no.. only the metal;lic stuff to get it super fine, but that lets in virtually no water anyway, we just rubbed the normal s*iit filler down dry.

lee coley
29-03-08, 12:08 PM
Its fine to rub filler down with water, filler is porous yes but as long as you dont soak it in water or leave it out in the rain for ages.

To be honest using 80/120/180/ and then finishing with a quick 320 is good enough.

Is the car even going to be used??? Why are you so worried about taxing it now? Get a disc on it a week before PV show!

we want it taxed for at least a month before pv, as its only gone over 20mph once in 2 years, so you could find that after afew times there could be a nick and bang and a load of smoke lol, best to be sure :thumb:

right, ive totally given up on my uncle now as hes had 2 weeks to paint a family members car, he promised ehd do it the week i asked him, then it was "2 more days" then "next week, im too busy" so hes lost the job :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

next week soemtime should hopefully be going over to joe walsh (insurance approved repairer) for a after hours respray to "show standard". so it should hopefully be painted by the latest 1st of may. we shall see :D

Dave.
15-04-08, 07:46 PM

Dave.
16-04-08, 10:26 PM
got my mint drivers door today from the scrappers off a 2dr saloon, originally been calypso red lol, GTE POWER!

anyway might get that sprayed with the rest of the car, aswell as a gsi spoiler i got off carl as mines cracking everywhere, and this one appeares to be mint! :thumb:, so overall, a free spoiler and a free mint drivers door.. GREAT! :thumb:

Dave.
19-04-08, 12:53 AM
a small update

it is no longer getting painted by the bodyshop.. my uncle is now doing it tuesday night through to wednesday afternoon, and should have it back wednesday night, and fully built back up thursday soemtime, so im really happy with that :thumb:

anyway tomorrow ill drive her up from the bottom unit to the top ones, take all my bits and pieces etc out that ive gatherd in the boot since its been not running, pop the battery on charge, jobs a goodun :thumb:

anyway took delivery of my new door the other day, going to use this as a spare as their hard enough to get nowerdays, so this will go into storage for god knows how long lol

pics of it, it is truley mint, few light dents etc but structurally solid. not one spec of rust anywhere, just wet/dry mud. brilliant for £20 :thumb:

small updates

hopefully off to my uncles tuesday morning, and im prepping it etc with him that night, paint wednesday, hopefully have it back late wednesday/early thursday. anyway i had to do something to it as its been sat for 4 weeks without being touched

first job was a new battery after the old one had gone flat again, every battery ive had has been "bad", so i went to halfords and got a "back door" one :thumb: ive also conquered my fear of car batteries :thumb::D

anyway, forst job was to fit my bright white headlight bulbs that i got off a scrapper the other week.. you cant see much differnce in the pics, but they are totally different colours when your next to them

drivers side one in:
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00502.jpg

both in:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00503.jpg

Dave.
20-04-08, 05:15 PM
then i got a interior blue led bulb out of the same car, so rather than waste it i fitted it to the interior light

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00499.jpg

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00500.jpg

didnt like it atall.. too chavvy and f*ck all brightness, so rather than it go to waste, i pulled my glevebox out and found the light wiring wrapped in the loom, as poverty novas didnt have a glovebox light lol, so got a bulb holder from a cavalier, plonked it in, poped the bulb in, wired it all up, and now looks like this

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00507.jpg

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00508.jpg

Probably takes a week or two to fully harden....
So i wouldn't go polishing or anything just yet.

Does look bloody good that, good thing about having a white car is its an easy as fcuk colour to match/spray.

Who cut/rolled the rear arches for you?

Dave.
26-04-08, 11:37 PM
cheers all :thumb:

ad they were rolled when i got it, the car was in a scrapyard and someone bought it and it had a set of 5's on with about 65 tyres, so they were "Roleld" (mole grips).

imo the 1l's are underestimated. i think its a decent little engine. plus all the minters out there are usually 1l's because theyve only ever been used to go to the shops and back lol.

Wait till you get on the road you will realise no matter how much power you got you allways want more lol.

How much has that cost melol Still 5k + to go on my current build

Wait till you got a couple of years ncb and you could drop a 1.6 in easy enough, insurance isnt that bad. I paid £1200 tpf&t on a redtop nova at 19, all mods declared. You wont need to wait till 21 for a bigger engine, at least you will get some more experience so you can handle the bigger engine in a year or 2.

Adam
30-04-08, 08:16 PM
You dont NEED to wait no, but it makes sense, as the money saved on insurance can be spent on other things.

The bodyshop didn't put it in correctly and therefore broke the bits that hold the light in and lost a nut.

Oh and this then scraped new paint off the lip of the wing under the light.

Did you use the back to black spray or the gel ?

Dave.
03-05-08, 11:27 PM
the gel... its called "auto glym bumper care" bloody good stuff.. brings all the plastic trim out lovely and black/grey.. door handles, skirts, bumpers etc :thumb:

NovaLad
03-05-08, 11:31 PM
Yeah that's what i use.

For the bumpers it's good but started to notice that when dirt get's on the gel on the skirts it leaves behind some weird stuffon the skirts that has to be scrubbed off everytime i clean the car so i have started to use spray on the skirts just to give um a shine.

Dave.
04-05-08, 12:45 AM
i think the auto glym bumepr care is the best stuff around.. it really shwos up your bumeprs. i did the whole car with autoglym polish too.. some of the ebst stuff round :thumb:

next jobs are handbreak cable and front ARB :thumb:

ope you all like the pics :thumb:

also the heater isnt blowing hot on the blower, its down to the cable on the back behind the dash.. so thats got to be fixed :(
The clips on the cables (both at the heater end and middle of the cable) have a tendency to break quite easily I've found.

I'm not a fan of Autoglym stuff tbh, always used to find they faded after a week or left smears on the paint. Megs ftw :D

Dave.
05-05-08, 03:32 PM
ahh.. so its just 2 clips from a scrapyard then? saves me afew quid lol

Jack
05-05-08, 03:51 PM
No, the clips are part of the cable. It has a plastic sleeve all down its length - you'll need to get the whole thing.

Iain
05-05-08, 04:08 PM
And you'll find they'll break when you remove them at the scrappy lol Fun fun fun

Dave.
05-05-08, 06:42 PM
great lol..... looks like a duck tape job is in order lol

Adam
05-05-08, 06:48 PM
Tape wont work, there under quite a bit of pressure when you use them, tape would just slip.
One of mine snapped when i changed my dash too

Dave.
05-05-08, 06:51 PM
a cable tie and my hot glue gun? lol

Looks good! But it needs a set of mudflaps and a nicer smaller back box to finish it off?

Dave.
10-05-08, 03:51 PM
the backbox s staying as i think it sounds awwsome whereas some people might think it sounds chavvy lol.. but i like NOISE!!!

had her out all afternoon yesterday, went up the motorway to my aunties in it with 4 of us in and it was still pulling at 80 lol. never once missed a beat.. then when we got there i ended up getting a football kicked in my face and falling off a pogo stick into a brick wall lol.. oh and some kid ran their plastic baby pram into the bumper lol

just bought a slimline ps2 for her... hopefully get a small screen soon and then wire it all in :thumb:

Leeboo
10-05-08, 06:29 PM
Ah yea keep it noisy! But I meant that actual look of the back box! A 3 inch inward rolled would be nice too.

Looks great anyways! :thumb: Keep it up

lol, any broken speedo gen?

A 1.2 may just touch a 'real' ton with the wind behind it downhill, but it will be revving its nuts off. I regularly have 100 registering on my 1.2, but thats probably 85 - 90 mph at the most

these came today, pair of grey gte rear cards, needed a clean so gave the a quick wipe with a wet cloth, then my dad got me some 2 inch wide insulation tape to put on them, because i have black front cappings, i thought having it fully grey would look plain and it needed something to break the grey up a lottle bit, this stuff was the perfect width to use on them, so now the top capping bits black to match the front, think they will look ace once in :thumb:

saturdays jobs were to fit the chrome boot strut (on my own, with help from a golfclub and my head, fix my side repeters as they wernt working, fix the ehater cable as it wasnt turnign fully, affix my headlights as they were wobbling, and just give her a quick wipedown

so first off was the boot strut:
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00627.jpg

then the door cards (pain in the **** to do tbh):

matches the gsi front black cappings

then decided to pop 2 stickers i found in a scrapper into the engin bay, not chav ones:
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00626.jpg

took me ages lol, had to scan in a a3 picture of a nova onto an a4 printer, merge them together and then change colour etc and skew wheels.. takes about 3 hours per car.. thats why i stopped doing them because my gcse revision was more important.. and still is

didnt like the colour, so took it off, hopefully gettign one that sits abit more flush with the body tomorrow :thumb:, them will spray rover hurricane gey and see about that

anyway, thought id refurd by anti-roll bar today

as it was:
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00642.jpg

quick wire brush down and a little help from a burntout picasso, it ended up like this:
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00644.jpg

first coat (still wet)
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00645.jpg

then thoughd id wire brush and spray the clamps too
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00647.jpg

once the coat had dried:
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00648.jpg

its stonechip paint, dried within about 2 mins.. but thought id leave it overnight just to be sure lol :thumb:
