It's back on a dolly, uncovered and ready to roll out of storage to bring home to work on. Just need to get the S14a into a moveable state so I can get the Neva out!

Project is still alive! It's now at home so there's hopefully more chance of getting time to work on it, which has happened but I've been distracted with doing some maintenance work on the M3 and then with a new purchase to replace my daily. It's also intended to replace the M3 too but I'm going to try and keep them both as long as I can!

But the Neva work that has happened so far...

I want to get it on the spit so I decided to lop the back end off as it was a) in the way and b) I just wasn't happy with it anyway! I've had some weld in threaded inserts made to go in some tube ends. Next step is to get those in and brackets made from there to the spit ends.

So some progress this week which will hopefully continue! Rear bungs now in place and rear part of the spit welded and bolted in the place. The bungs will also act as a mounting point for the rear end structure of the car. Where the back currently is is where the rear screen ends, so can fit in a hatch or saloon body at this point. Fairly happy with the welding considering it has been literally years since I even tacked anything! lol

On another note, anyone know of any free image hosting sites? Photobucket has the annoying image tags on now grrr....

Tidy welding as you've not done it in a while.
Love the rear idea, But just really happy to see you working on it.

Me too mate, me too!

So much easier now it’s at home. Was nice having the old workshop but being able to just pop downstairs for 20-30mins tinker time is great. I’ve missed it.

Mounted the front section of the spit today. Now need to tweak it slightly then raise both ends so i can get a full spin from it :)

So... to update on where things have progressed since August.

Part 1 of 3

There was a lot of standing around in dissatisfaction with some of the previous work I had done to the frame and I decided if I didn’t correct/change/improve it now I knew I would regret it. However, with such long term projects there has to be compromise as things are always evolving and I could just end up going around in circles! There was even a moment in October where I was considering completely starting again! [emoji85]

So I decided it would be sensible to work back to front, which started with the rear panelling. It was sloppy, rough and the recess inconsistent.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200107/b3756c997d5b1dc5c2aa5624cb6fbb13.jpg

So starting with pass side it was all chopped out and with some jiggery & spacers I piloted building a frame out of 3x10mm plate...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200107/b88bb97fa7e5c278d82ee9a0e7c6c852.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200107/46807e8b5617a58410e71ad6abbdb848.jpg

Then some 1mm sheet and you get the idea...

Part 2 of 3

In order to continue this panelling two things had to happen:-

1] remove and refit better a section of tubing (angle was off by maybe 5deg compared to other side and was bugging me!)

Choppy! Choppy!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200107/81ea0b5dbf2ff6235b2273d7f0ce0d83.jpg

Ah... that’s better for my brain...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200107/19c002f6d4955ecac83aefec0435ad1e.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200107/eaca238561509467ed6a2c2199f3871e.jpg

2] address the horrid bottom section of the middle panel...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200107/f72d70cc1d9337c498e6c08fcccdca95.jpg

As you can see from the above pic the cross brace was removed (will be redesigned later) and the subframe mounting point tube wish trimmed, shaped and made to flow better...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/fc47145fd9ebf7b0d4206d9aef26cbc5.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/cfd9b16307e5463b132fe761ada0d97e.jpg

Same was repeated on the other side to match. The framing work was then completed for these 3 panels each side before making up more templates. These templates will eventually be carbon sheet not steel and bonded in (more panelling in part 3!).

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/7763e192fc102b75bcdf68ce9336d282.jpg

Part 3 of 3

So with the panel templates ongoing, a tedious a not very exciting job, I moved on to some other parts. Firstly adding some more tubing...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/772dc6c2e0fdd50a25987bd322448844.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/e62990b7ecb9410e83d617f3e212c174.jpg

Repeat on the other side...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/504cb093001f1b62a37773be73ecbeb1.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/a52e06132f7ae7450e34b64f5f362e2b.jpg

Then it was back to more panel templates [emoji30]

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/abf554d8c22451094e737d1f574a91ab.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/82da75ff719139a2445df9479af46317.jpg

Including a sneaky one out of some old, crappy carbon sheet to give an idea of the intended end result (just imagine the tubing is all anthracitish)...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/cfe932c4f9db02dcf9d18d1485b8a472.jpg

Then distracted away from that again for a bit I removed the outer sill piece, trimmed up the inner section and added a length of tube. The inner section will be getting removed when I build the new, lower complete floor structure [emoji13]

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/df094efc935a0fcf10a3903f5137c919.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/577dae152aa371129293901a8790ad07.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/6214ea9d400a85075f510dabb900927e.jpg

So that’s where I’m up to other than a few more panel templates and framing work. Once that’s all done I need to repeat the sill removal & tidy on pass side. Some more tubing and box has been ordered for when I rebuild the floor but I want to refit engine & box again before I go at that.

Thanks for following along. It’s been really great getting back at it again, albeit in small bursts! Then brain is filling up with ideas daily!! [emoji854]

Just as a caveat, I have no idea if I’m doing it right! Lol I’m just sticking to the principle of triangulate and getting a professional welder to do most of the finished welding. I have no idea how this would be in a crash?? Can you be to stiff? Needs an engineers oversight/opinion really to be honest. I highly doubt this car ever sees the road!

DEAN-DOHERTY

Looks great either way. A crash would be sore. No crumble zone points. Surely if built to a good standard "road legal compliant" you could go down the kit car route and have it registered and tested.

Where are the crumple zones on a normal nova? Once you hit the chassis legs its all solid?!? Thinking about kit cars, they’re normally just all box section?? Should I be using some thinner walled tube/box on front & rear so it twists/bends easier?? [emoji2369] i dunno! [emoji23]

House
18-01-20, 02:25 PM
Don't be so negative!! Haha build it to work!! A crash should be the last thing on your mind!! Haha

Although, as I was cruising to the barrier at Cadwell I did think "hmmmmm maybe I did need that collapsible column, instead of the body stabbing bit of bar that we used"

The Simps
26-02-20, 10:36 PM
So to update...

I’ll let the pics do the talking but basically:

1) I finished all the framing on the tubing on the rear end bar a few finishing touches and an x brace on the large centre piece. I’ve not bothered to make any more panels out of steel at this stage, knowing/hoping it will all be carbon anyway.

2) Remove the outer sill on passenger side.

3) Refitted engine & box.

4) Started to think where my new floor needs to be, especially around drivers feet with wheel clearance and gaining whatever space I can! I might drop down a tyre size I think, just to give me a little more room.

5) Build a dolly jig so I know the new floor will be level to all the main pickups. Principle is 70mm box on same size wheels as rotisserie, so the two go together and also separate - is modular the right word? I then cut loads of smaller 70mm cubes that I can stack for consistent height. Front subframe is to be the lowest point and also the floor level so I can then go flat right the way through. Subframe is 3 cubes high off the jig (210mm). Once floor is built there is a very high chance I will be redoing the front chassis legs/subframe pickup points, probably out of tube. Floor will be made out of the 25x50mm box.

6) Attach car to jig [emoji41]

It’s been so much thinking, staring, head scratching and pondering to figure out how best to move forward, but mounted everything squarely to the jig tonight and see my cubes actually work was a real feeling of achievement and progress.

Now to plan removal of the old and in with the new!

So quiet week this week but got 3hrs in this afternoon.

After lots of checking and re-checking that everything was stable and won’t collapse on me, I made a start at removing the remaining sills and floor sections...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200308/d72ecb7f980df9c7cedaa459be7c7208.jpg

You can now see with the sleeved extensions where the new floor ends up.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200308/319075b671568412c15814b29e8e56ce.jpg

Need to scollop the sleeves around the horizontal tubes for a better fit and to have more of the pillar posts inside the sleeve. Will also make 1 or 2 uprights and a diagonal piece at the rear. Like this...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200308/8fc55887318707a1d0c1a664cecdb44f.jpg

The front will also tie into the front subframe area but will do that when I come to redoing the front chassis rails etc.

Hopefully will get some time for progress evenings this week [emoji4]

Being stuck at home I’ve put some good time in this week and nearly finished the main part of the floor structure, removing all of the old...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200329/417c868d4ebce820c2dc642971dea070.jpg

Should have the front part of the X welded up today. The floor is 25x50 box and there will be additional supporting 25x25 box where required, such as around tunnel. Pedal box area will obviously have a well supported structure too.

I will then need to add a small trapezium shape section that will run between the rack and bellhousing like so...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200329/0f557c23bf43d72e6fb0803c3a8da9ff.jpg

Then its engine & box back out to start thinking about the redesign of the front end, particular the chassis legs.

Really enjoying being back on this [emoji4]

I don’t, thats why everything is straight pieces where possible! Lol

I think from memory, other than the initial custom cages main hoop, windscreen/roof bar, and a pillar posts, the only other bent tube is around the front turret tops and bulkhead to front cross member. Those I had to get bent for me.

Ok, so it’s been a month since I updated and I’ve been working on it most days.

I had a good offer on my Nissan s14a donor shell so needed to crack on getting remaining bits off I needed, but more importantly, making a new, better jig of the front end. What I discovered is that I had my tension rod brackets in the wrong alignment - glad I caught it now before I redid the front end! While changing the front end to correct that, I also decided I wanted to redo the turrets. I never liked where they sat as I had to take a chunk out of the wings like so...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200502/323dd9d2d5c1ed194926e4d4c42c655d.jpg

So I did some trig and worked out that moving the turrets inbound 30mm will take my camber from -1 to -4, about where I’ll likely run it. My top mounts of choice then have 3deg either way, so well within scope for what I need. So cue one over engineered, adjustable jig! (It’s made out of offcuts and scraps as getting more steel has been challenging!)

And here’s where I’m at as of today. I have the new front half of the floor basic structure in place and the upright tubes which tie in the floor to the turrets (a complicated bit of notching at the top, took a few attempts!). And then to end the day I lopped off the front bar!

While I wait on the machined turrets, next step is replacing the box chassis rails with tube with weld in bosses. Bosses should be here this week. I also have to pluck up the courage to chop the current turrets out! I had replacement 90deg bends arrive yesterday ready, along with 5m of tube.

Rockin on!

Thank you Scott, very kind words indeed!

It is amazing it's still going, I agree. I do it mostly as a stress relief outlet if I'm honest. It's certainly more about the journey than the final destination.

Crazy engine swaps are without doubt more common than when I started this 7 years ago. I don't think there are that many fully space framed hobby builds though? Ones I've seen have been done in motorsport or fabrication shops. But of course, the quality is without doubt going to be better than anything I can build - I would hope so anyway!! lol

Worked on the subframe mounting points this afternoon. Very time consuming but pleased with the results.

These are 12mm ID, 20mm OD steel crush tubes. The hole needed to be 10mm offset from the tube centreline. So after some templating and tube notcher fettling this happened...

Thanks chaps!

Do we think that subframe structure is man enough for the task? Obviously normally its a piece of box section chassis with crush tubes so being tube with crush tubes (of which both are thicker walled steel!) it should be stronger. But is having greater contact across the subframe mounting surface important?? I have a tendency to over engineer these things!

Once welded I doubt the crush tubes would twist or flex, subframe should not either I would assume? I will also be running another vertical piece of tube from between the two subframe bolts up to the strut tower, which conveniently is where the front part of the turret meets.

Simps you're a madman. Love the work on this.

I know what you mean about the subframe, if it's got 2 flats on top I'd be happier if it was sitting on box section. Is there a lot of push/pull force on it?

It obviously holds the engine and front suspension but doesn’t have the same forces on it as a driven axle.

I guess see how it goes (assuming I actually get to drive one day!) and if it is a flex point then I just build the subframe into the chassis [emoji13]

So I cleaned up where I lopped off the old turrets, bolted all the required suspension components back on and mounted up the new turret! I then moved them inboard 30mm as planned and checked the camber which was -3.5deg. I was aiming for around -4deg so I know I can go further if I want to!

I need to now decide whether to come up and or inbound more. Looking at old pics I can go up but not sure if I should wait for the body to be back on before I make a decision and know if it definitely clears [emoji848]

I also have not yet fully decided on how I will attach the turrets to the chassis, well more like where, but I have some ideas. A choice of one piece of tube impacts the next... Lots of standing and staring while tea drinking to be done!

It’s looking a little more Nova like now!

I almost took it off the jig just to see it on all 4 wheels and under it’s own weight, but would only have to go putting it back on the jig again. So I didn’t! [emoji1787]

Whats the plan for arches then? Wide saloon-shape steel?

I’m really torn between something 80s boxy, like e30 m3 style, or staying true to the loon and staying round. I’ve got about 90-100mm to fill in the back, less up front.

Either those wheels are huge, or I've forgotten how small a Nova is!

They are 17s in Nissan S14 size diameter! 235 rear and 215 front I think is what's on there. I have the option to go a little smaller diameter and could always drop down an inch front and rear (currently 8" & 9"). I would like to ideally run staggered wheel diameter too with 17s rear and 16s front, but that will depend on if I decide to run drop knuckles to help keep the geo in check as they won't work with 16s. We shall see...

But yes, a Nova is still small lol

Sounds like you've got it pretty much worked out.

I'm at the point of thinking about what wheels to go for, want to go 17" and something different, but Nova friendly wheels are basically 'Unobtainium'.

So mocked the front end back on as best I could and test fitted the bonnet. It just catches on one of the turret/top mount nuts, but with some trimming away of the under structure we should be all good! Was nice to have the face on the car again :)

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200804/84f313a517b2344e73de8649a0051d31.jpg

Then I set about looking into the front wheel positioning...

The rears line up with middle of the arch but the fronts are set back due to me deciding I wanted the engine further back. Like so...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200804/ed7b42768170c7a7716954efc66ee874.jpg

So I trimmed out the wing for clearancing and set about a test fit...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200804/53e5338aac02f0cac648c0b982b83b9f.jpg

Now. I’m obviously going to be flaring out the arches, probably keeping the saloon round look, just bigger. If I keep the bumper as stock and start the arch flair just above it, i just have enough tyre clearance to the bumper on lock. Rear would need trimming back more but I plan to run that open anyway, time attack car style. If I wider the sides of the bumper then I can move the wheel forward. Which brings me on to that...

Above is all stock arms but with turrets moved in to about -3-4deg camber as stock. Stock there should be c7deg castor and I’m told I don’t want to be running anymore than 7.5deg really for a grip set up.

Until I get the coilovers, arms etc I’m not really going to know what’s possible in terms of moving the wheel forward and keeping good geo. Guess what I’ll have to buy soon then!

New corbeau seat arrived today (LE Pro) and I’m really pleased with it. It’s designed specifically for the lotus elise so its narrow but at the same time accommodating, basically lower sides.

Now on to positioning. How close is too close to the roll cage? I think I’ve got it about where it needs to be for comfortable pedals and gear stick.

I know exactly what you mean! lol

Been struggling to figure out the steering column last few days. Pretty sure I will make a new shaft and weld on a lifeline boss. I will then obviously need bearing carriers, UJ's, bulkhead fittings and appropriate connection rack end. I've tried 10x + to count the number of splines on the end of the Nissan UJ to rack and lose count every time! [emoji1787][emoji85]

Update time.

Been steadily gathering parts and figuring out the steering column the past few months. I am running the S14 (200sx) steering rack and the input spline is a strange count on both sides of the UJ connection, so I was always going to need the lower part of the S14 column for simple ease. It is whether I use the whole S14 column, the nova column (with lower S14 part welded on) so I can retain keys, stalks etc, or simply make my own touring car style. So I set to work!

S14 and Nova columns side by side...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210109/83cb909a49b5983ad5a7b92c8b4d2d39.jpg

I chopped the end off I needed from the S14 column and it turned out the splined end was actually pressed into a splined sleeve. Thankfully I cut it right where the splined part ends! Lol (the part is pictured machined down here, more on that later).

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210109/40ecb9a29eec952c0098c67498f6b620.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210109/6d3f00460c5d17a9969d6fbe7f5db58e.jpg

Inspired by House?s set up, I got in touch with Ben @ Hangar 30 who supplied me with a bracket that comes off the cage to hold a bearing carrier and bearing for top end of the column.

The bearing ID is 3/4 inch. He advised me to use some 3/4 inch cds for the column with a nice thick wall c5mm. This was proving tricky to source, let alone in a small length, so opted for a piece of solid 3/4 inch bright steel bar. It?ll be a touch heavier than the cds but in all honesty, weight saving on this build has not been a huge priority, just a consideration.

The Simps

So I now needed to attach the 3/4 inch column to the lifeline weld on boss (20mm od) top end, and the S14 piece rack end, and with a UJ and bulkhead bearing in between.

So I had the boss and S14 piece machined down to 3/4 inch, sourced a 3/4 inch uj, and I found a sierra bulkhead bearing that takes a 25mm od shaft. It then required a series of 25mm od 3/4 inch id machined sleeves, collars to bring it all together which will eventually get welded into place...

And here it is all together...

Replaced the bits of wood spacing out the A pillars both sides with some little tubes. I?ve got some tidying up to do on shell when it?s next off the frame then this can all be strengthened and boxed in. For now, the tubes help with locating everything.

Thanks!

So the geometry is based upon 200sx S14 stock geo and shock tower position, angle etc, but with them pulled inbound for more camber in the stock position (and to tuck inside the inner wings) and up to give more shock travel as I will be pretty low. Also helped to keep the camber sensible for moving so far inboard. I think in standard camber plate position is around 3.5deg. The run a fair amount of castor as standard c6-7deg I think which is typical on a lot of rwd stuff. I moved the engine and subframe back an inch (from memory) and plan to pull the wheel back forward by that again with adjustable lower arms and tension rods. If its too much castor I have a lot of adjustment in the turrets.

Hard to tell I know from the pics, but looking back at notes it was 35mm in and 25mm up.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210307/816fb002dfffaecc621a87d1d5461ee9.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210307/478f8fa7af31863fc83348664a927b3b.jpg

And you can see how in the last pic the wheels are yet to be moved forward, which will induce more castor, which I can always take some back out again on the turrets but spinning the mount holes.

Have you watched any Ryan Tuerck videos on YouTube?

If you can get past his annoying and childish American arrogance, then they've done some great builds, and he has a truly brilliant fabricator called Dom. He's certainly the brains behind the operation!

He did some great stuff with an aluminium footrest in one of their drift cars. Good for inspiration.

EDIT - took me a while to find it, but here it is;

(1) Best Floor Plate Ever Machined? East Coast Car EP.9 - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDh9thJkYw4)

The latest build they're doing, a modern Supra with a Judd V10 motor is quite something.

I found the Supra build over Xmas, very cool indeed, ?Dom spec? is certainly something! I had not watched any previous vids though so that was helpful, thank you! I feel like when it comes to fab work and building cars in general, if you have a lathe and a mill the possibilities of what you can achieve go to a whole new level!

Starting drilling, punching and dimpling last night...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210506/f886aac9dfabc53e3269a3305aaffdf8.jpg

I?ve learned a few things. The initial pilot hole for the hole punch is not as critical as I thought in terms of alignment. Because the hole punch clamps/stamps through rather than turning, you can use that to line up square. The dimple die obviously needs a snug fit to the hole but is really effortless. I was expecting lots of distortion on the steel but none.

I also learned I had to scale down my size plans. The die?s themselves have a good 5-10mm of flat after the taper section. So with that first row, that flat section was encroaching on the tapered part of the hole next to it. I just got away with it!

Hopefully get the rest done later, but it?s actually quite time consuming if you want them nicely lined up.

The equipment they have access to certainly helps, and then there's the space they have. Seems like a USA thing, every house and workshop is vast.

The other fabrication/tuning series I enjoy from the USA is Rob Dahm (a rotary engine expert). He's come a long way since his early days, to the point where he's now machining his own engines.

If you're a middle class American you will have more disposable income compared to a middle class Brit, thus more tools and toys! And yeah, much bigger houses, garages and workshops.

Rob Dahm is an enjoyable watch too, I love his honesty with his videos.

Fitzee's Fabrications is also worth a look for good metal work skills, The Fab Forums too.

I?ve been reading that a lot of the stiffer engine mounts out there can end up raising the engine 10-15mm, which I obviously do not want. These mounts come well recommended and only increase height minimally but there?s scope to strip them down and machine a little off if required, hopefully not!

Thought I better get these in and trial fitted to make sure none of the chassis is affected.

My carbon fibre doors have just got the hinges out of a set of standard steel doors, cut out and bolted into them.

I have also got some fabricated hinges that Ben Speechley at Hangar 30 does, which are slightly lighter and a bit more elegant. I haven't fitted those yet.

The standard hinges work just fine. Happy to supply photos if you need them.

The Nuke CFC and the Radium Engineering FCST are quite expensive for what you get( iirc. 1000 pound for a basic unit with fuel cell but without fuellpumps/ levelsender/ fillerneck-flappervalve etc.).

I have made one myself and the total cost for the parts is around 100pound for the topplate, fullpump mounts, swirlpot, 6pin fuel resistent bulkhead connector, Viton flapper valve and the fillerneck
The (used) ATL fuel cell was around 180 pounds.
It saves quite some money and it is an straightforward job..

Good job on building one yourself, looks good!

They?re not a cheap unit, no. The CFC on it?s own without pumps, sensor etc is c?550-600. The one I pictured with the tank comes in at around ?650, so a cheap tank to be fair, although not FIA approved, which doesn?t bother me anyway.

I could even get one made for less that would be more than suitable for the job but there?s just something about the set up and tank I really like, I can?t explain it.

This build is about function but not entirely over form. It?s very much about the journey for me (bloody should be, it?s taken long enough! Lol)

So to update this.

With lockdown ending works been pretty busy with long days, so not much time in the garage. We then got the news our landlord wants to try selling the house during this current crazy market climate! So knowing we are on the move I needed to crack on and get what work I have done on the car sealed.

So body came back off

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210726/5bddb1e43065530bcd51ca9909f009f2.jpg

I then first wanted to focus on tidying up the inside of the shell/body so when it goes back on it is ready to be welded/fixed to the frame permanently. But also I wanted any bare metal cleaned up and painted. So that happened

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210726/d48f4754cdffa796287e927e6fc140fd.jpg

The paint of choice was a coating called Steel-It. It is used a lot in offroad circles for chassis parts, arms etc instead of powdercoat and basically dries hard for a good protective seal. But its party piece is it actually contains pigments of stainless steel and is weld thru, perfect for what I need! I sprayed a test piece then tried welding to it and it does work. Quick clean up and you can then just respray the welded bit and it blends well.

Next up is getting the frame stripped down and back on the rotisserie. Ive got some smaller fab jobs I want to do and bits to finish weld on the underside, then I will coat the whole thing in more Steel-It.

If there is time before any move, I also need to redo the rear turret tops. The angle of the strut is all wrong and the mounting point on the hub is under stress. They need to be more upright. Hopefully I will get time to do them but I need the frame rolling and everything bolted back on for the move as I am expecting to be going to a smaller space :(

Thanks Colin. Frustrating that every time I get momentum something always stops me!

As for weight, no idea. Will see if I can rig up some scales and find out!

Attachment wise, it was held on by a pair of these tabs on each pillar (you can see the b pillar ones in previous post pics)

But just those 6 wont be enough to support it with glass, doors, trunk etc. I could do gusset plates to the cage but seeing as I dont need structural rigidity in the body I want to try and make it bolt on/off if possible. So maybe double up on tabs? Tricky bit is obviously making sure I get a good seal on the bulkheads if making it removable, I have some thoughts on that.

Where did you get the tabs from out of interest? Or did you have them made?

If you can weight the body without too much hassle I would certainly be interested. I'm also intrigued by your bulkhead sealing ideas.

As you've probably guessed, making my Nova body removable is one of the future plans. Although I might split mine down the middle so the rear part is removable for engine access.

It?s an awesome house but out of our price range realistically. It is also very unique and with that comes expensive upkeep/repairs, which the missus is not keen on!

We will be buying somewhere. It?s a few years earlier than we would of liked but at least now my partner passed her 5yr point since moving here and can now apply for permanent residency and thus get a mortgage.

I’ve only ever seen race cars that have removable bodies. And as you say they never seal totally.

In terms of motorsport regulations there is only a requirement to have a sealed bulkhead between the fuel tank and the cockpit, and the engine and the cockpit.

I guess the only solution to that is to make the bulkheads solely within the spaceframe chassis.

Yes, that's the place. I had a big workshop with a 2-post lift, and depending on when you visited I'd subsequently put up another building, of about 1500 sq/ft.

There were various other buildings/stables, many in a state of disrepair. It was just under 5 acres in total.

To stop parts flying all over. Usualy bolted to a mid plate. The bulk head usualy just has to protect you from fire and flying parts. I know in the fwd series we have to have a 150x250x6mm plate bolted to the bulkhead inline with the flywheel and all holes welded up but thats about it. That chassis is looking mint nice work

Drag cars with the prop inside usualy have a tube welded in a strategic place to stop it coming into the cockpit if it fails and the gearboxes are wrapped in a kevlar "diaper"

Ah yes, the diaper, I remember this from a 187 Customs (Murder Nova) youtube episode where he had to fit one for a certain racetrack.

6mm plate! Jeez! But I guess a flywheel ripping through your chassis is no joke!

Tube work afternoon today!

Added b pillar door bars each side, grab handle drivers side (help my fat ass over the climbing frame!), and drivers a pillar to turret support.

Hopefully get passenger front turret done tomorrow and hoping so more tube will be arriving!

Confused, have I logged into PNG or Rightmove?

As cool as a removable shell would be, what's the realistic benefit once the car's built?

Might make it easier for repairing the shell when I bin it off on the first corner??

But yes, you are probably right. It?s just a feature really. I wont do it if its not simple enough.

I had a productive weekend and a few hours today. Floor structure, tunnel, passenger seat brackets, and door bars are now made and tacked in place. I?ve got a couple more bars to add then it?s redo on the rear turrets. Hopefully that can be accomplished by the weekend and I can get it on the rotisserie for welding next week. I?ve then got a chap lined up to media blast the whole chassis before I cover it in Steel-it [emoji4]

A few pics?

A pillar support bars this afternoon. I deliberated for a while on how to do these, and originally it was one long bar notched close to the existing door bar, but just didn?t look right. So I ended up doing it in two pieces and I?m much happier with it. Need to do bottom piece on drivers side tomorrow then start chopping out the rear turrets! [emoji85]

I am 18st of man love. I did the dip in the door bars to where my leg swings in. That vertical also acts as grab handle to pull me out. I think my seat is further back too which prob helps.

I cant decide whether to bother doing a roof diagonal or not. The seats are positioned directly under the main hoop.

Again I don't have the roof X cos of helmet clearance....not that helmet.....but my seats are in front of the main hoop.

I'd say if you've got the tube and the time then fit it.

That makes a lot of sense. If I?ve got time after doing rear turrets I?ll do one.

I decided not to have the whole thing media blasted as I just couldn?t justify the cost right now with moving house. Plus it would of been a lot of faff putting it back on wheels to put on a trailer to then put back on the rotisserie for the blaster, then back on wheels to trailer home to only have to put back on rotisserie again! So I just spent all of last weekend taking everything back to bare metal and given it a good rough surface for keying.

Dad and I starting spraying on Monday but ran out of cans doh! So I?ve re-ordered more but in normal tins for use in a spray gun. We will be hopefully getting a couple of full coats on tomorrow. I will then start bolting parts on the weekend after giving, it a full week to cure. Car should then be ready for moving and storing at its new home without rusting away on me!

More pics tomorrow [emoji1696]

But what a ballache it was! The stuff is pretty thick and shouldn?t have thinners added and if so, no more than 5%. Dad?s Machine Mart spray gun struggled with it. Needed a bigger nozzle size I think. We had the regulator up to 50psi just to get it out. It would spray but quite stop start so was hard to do long runs. He persisted tho and he did a pretty good job to be fair. It?s not an easy thing to clamber around!

Our make shift spray booth did ok but there was quite a bit of overspray on the frame but I?ve just buffed it with a microfibre and most has come off to a more consistent, light textured finish.

Give it a week to cure now then I?ll start putting it all back together ready for the move.

Thanks House.

Nope to the workshop.

Current digs has a single door garage but it is 1.5 garages wide inside, which is great (can probably see this from my pics). There is also a room next door to that the size of a single garage that is my tool & store room. I also have a couple of sheds for overflow crap.

New house just has a single garage.

I?m hoping that with most stuff back on the nova I can get it into the garage along with a couple of workbenches & my tool chest, but it is hopeful! Everything else will go into the two sheds I?m bringing with. Come Spring, the plan is to build a simple shed on to the back of the garage to create a tool & store room. Then further down the road as money allows and subject to being able to buy a bit of extra land from the neighbour, build a nice big double garage on the side/back of the house.

Paint is nice and cured so re-assembly has started! Just wish it was final assembly with all clean parts [emoji57] I had considered just giving some bits a quick wire brush & hammerite but it?s just a waste of time and paint as it will be getting upgraded. So stock bits will do for now!
