Engine bay wiring is basically done for now. I've just got to run the earths for each component (they had to be cut for te rejig), run a wire into the car for the rad fan and main live to starter.
So main loom comes in on the left with also the main live from the battery to the starter...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/TheSimps/Nova/Nova%20Coupe%20Project/15-03-09001.jpg
Wires then run in the scutte for brake reservoir, blower, wiper &washer bottle...

The rest go down the drivers inner wing and under the slam panel with temp switch running down one side and horn, reverse switch & fan the other. Main beam, side lights & indicators now on 1 plug too...

The wires for the back of the engine will all come through here along with loom for the ECU to the EDIS-4 (is only 4 core shielded)...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/TheSimps/Nova/Nova%20Coupe%20Project/15-03-09014.jpg
So all will be nicely hidden away which is one nice advantage of running carbs!
Just got to trim up the rear loom to length then I'll take it all out again to finish off the earths etc.
H&H ign solutions do custom leads i think....
SBD also do customs i think mate!
Looking good, nice work on the loom
Very nice, i've taught you well..lol

Cheers for the comments. Its one of those tasks that takes ages and you're spending all the time on something so that people DON'T see it! lol
H&H don't do the leads, will try SBD then. Cheers Dan.
When i had my bike carbs agessss ago, im sure i remember reading you can use a Ecotec/XE dispak with the EDIS system..... (afterall they are fairly generic 3wire ignition packs, same as edis one)
Which would mean you could keep std leads.
The Simps
16-03-09, 09:44 PM
interesting! will look into that.
I've acquired today (well in the post) some GTE clocks and inlet rubbers & trumpets for the carbs.
I never got round to doing it,but see no reason why it wont work.....

Some old skool motor factors still do the 'make your own' HT leads - you might be lucky and find some were that can supply you the ends you need and you can make them up yourself??

Been really busy at work this last month (I'm in the middle of the busiest 8 weeks of the year for me!) so have managed very little. I did bring my car loom home with me a week or so back to finish off the last few jobs and finally got the work done last night!
So back out on the lounge floor...

I've ran all the earths individually for each component in the engine bay (they all had to be cut to move things) and they will all mount up where the old battery earth did on the bulkhead. I've ran a wire back through for a fan overide switch and ran some 4 core shielded through which has all the wires the ECU needs from the TPS and EDIS. I also changed the plug on the wiper motor for a smaller more lightweight item :p

My attention then turned back to the coilovers as I want to order my springs shortly and need to know whether I need to also order new shorter shocks ie how much piston travel do I have left.
So with the coilover wipped off and spring removed it went back on the car to get an idea of where it hits the stop...

I did some measuring and with the current 7" spring at the bottom of the platform to where it bottoms out is another 37mm. Do you think I'll get away with a 7" 350lb spring without bottoming out?
The back end is now back up in the air as Michael's coming back next weekend to do some more on the rear arches. Once they're done the engine can come back out and engine bay prepped and painted.
:D

Been looking at my switches again etc and been looking at the rear heater window relay. I'm not going to be needing it due to a polycarb rear so I traced the wire back to find it go into this relay....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/TheSimps/Nova/Nova%20Coupe%20Project/29-03-09.jpg
From what I can work it how it works is that it will only work the rear screen when the alternator warning light is out ie charging. I'm assuming its because its such a drain? So I thought if I take the output black wire that went to the rear screen and joined it with my overide fan wire that when I pull the rear screen switch the fan should come on but as a safety it will be switched off when engine is off. Have I got that right?
Can someone also tell me how I wire up the ignition so that you have to turn the key to ignition then press the push button to start but turning the key won't work?

Is it just a case of disconnecting the black/red starter wire from the ignition barrell and having it on a push switch that has an ignition feed?

iirc the relay is there so that the heated screen is not on constantly an an cuts in an out, to prevent the screen from cracking because of the heat, but i could be full of **** lol

That makes kind of sense but surely if its linked to the alternator warning light it will always be on tho? Cos how does the alternator work - is it constantly charging or does it have a cut out? Surely that would affect the dash warning light tho as evertime it stops charging it would flash up the warning light on the dash?

A concern that someone pointed out of running the rear so low was the axle actually hitting on the chassis where it mounts up. So to check I jacked it right up with the shocks out...

The thing I realised today when standing back and admiring is that when it goes rwd most of it will need cutting out again as the chassis rails will be in the way of the driveshafts! lol :(

I have a new found appreciation for whats involved in doing a task such as this and why not many people do it!
Well put people do not realise the time, effort and thought involved in tasks of this nature - i must say he has made a sterling job and is clearly worth the investment!
I will also add i think imo that rwd would be cool but its not worth ruining all that good work for the sake of it as the rwd may cause more harm than good! Thats imo remember lol
Can i as what welder he was using if you know?

As fantastic as the work is I sadly can't say it was all mine unlike you with your car :thumb:
His welder was definately a migatronic or megatronic. 180 rings a bell.
Ref ruining it to run rwd, not a lot would need changing looking at it in hindsight. Like what I've done with the turrets chopping a piece of 5" tubing in half I would just need a larger half moon and do something like below.

After talking with friends and really mulling things over things are on hold at mo until I can figure out the rwd plans first. I definately want to do it and using porsche 924 transaxle, spaceframe the front end with a double wishbone setup. Its ultimately gonna take longer to finish but I don't see the point of spending money to get the car running fwd for the sake of maybe 2 months to then have to change and chop it all up again. Hopefully I'll be picking up a full porsche soon and can start figuring stuff out from there!
Count Vaux Alot
11-04-09, 10:26 AM
The plans sound good and what you plan on using drive train wise isn't a mile away from plans i have considered before (watch this space lol its not a nova though) and what you say about wasting time and money on FWD make sense to - just make sure you have actually thought this through properly (like you wouldn't but some one had to say it) because the correct execution of this will make or break the whole car!

Thats the tough bit!
I want to have a look a several different IRS setups, from suspension setups etc and go from there.
If I can get this complete porsche it will be brilliant! I can then get everything held up in place to give an idea how its all going to work. There's no reason why I couldn't transfer the whole porsche setup over as wheelbase is only 2" different but I obviously want to update the 80s suspension!

Got the engine out yesterday and I'm back to a bare shell again - feels like I'm going backwards!! lol
Despite only making the decision last weekend I've decided to continue on the fwd route and gather up parts for the rwd conversion and not start it until I have everything the idea being I won't then run the risk of chopping up a perfectly good shell and abandon half way! With the exception of driveshafts, everything I need to buy to finsih it off fwd I can re-use going rwd and the driveshafts should sell easy enough.
So before I started chopping and welding the bulkhead I decided to get in some practice on a less important area!
In removing the seat rails I got a bit ratted and went through a few times and now everytime I see the holes it reminds me of the anguish!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/TheSimps/Nova/Nova%20Coupe%20Project/19-4-095.jpg
Looks shocking I know but I'm pleased as I feel I learnt a lot from it! I regret not taking more time with getting the fit 100% perfect as that would of made a huge difference! A lot of messy weld areas are because there was gaps that needed puddling.
Right or wrong I tacked it in first about an inch apart but working in difference places on the plate as not to warp it. I then done little runs between the tacks then move again to the other side of the plate. As a result the plate hasn't distorted. I done the majority of the top edge last and got my best runs, again, right or wrong I worked out the weld went smoother if I aimed the arc actually at the weld and moved the puddle along. It nearly always went through but the puddle then covered the whole. The problem I then had is my trigger finger getting tired from the pulsing! lol
Next weekend I'll make a start on replacing the section of the bulkhead with the wiper motor hole with a flat plate.

Got the week off work this week so looking to put some hours in on the nova. Done about 4 hours yesterday and similar today. Got the boring job done first and scraped off all the underseal from the arches then got them in primer. Its nasty stuff to remove. I went with the method off heating it up, using the scraper, then wire wheel the residue.
Tomorrow I'm in the engine bay getting the bulkhead smooth, finishing some welding and get that into primer.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/TheSimps/Nova/Nova%20Coupe%20Project/06-05-0913.jpg
I then welded the brake servo plate in (was only tacked before). I found I struggled here when I couldn't get a very good angle to be able to see the weld so was very much "guessing"...

Welded on the outside of the back lip then ground it back. I'm finding now my welder control is better I'm leaving the heat on "2-max" for everything and just adjusting wiring speed to suit. There were places I blew thru (expected) but I got some really nice runs along this edge which was pleasing as it was pi$$ thin! My trigger fingers aches like hell now tho. I've got a slight gap (end closest in the pic) but I'll fill that with filler.

I'm gonna do a couple more skims and put it in primer then leave it to the sprayer to tweek it if needed...

I bought a set of metal spreaders from halfords that come in different sizez, they were only a couple of quid. The largest spreader is almost the width of the bulkhead.
The problem is now is that I've just got a couple of low spots I need to build up so how much of a spread do I need to do around them?
Plastics easy as they bend which can make it easier.
Spend it over everything, then try to skim off the arears that where ok after.

Well been to the specialist today and its definately Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I've just had a steroid injection into my wrist and told to rest up for 2-3 months. If its not better by then its in for the op which will mean 6-8wks out of work, which I don't really want. So I'm hoping to call on a few favours to get bits done on the car or its going to be very unlikely to see track this year.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/TheSimps/Nova/Nova%20Coupe%20Project/07-06-098.jpg
And then started trimming. I already had the main outline from the template of Shaun's but I had to trim in the bonnet hinge clearance and the tricky bit the holes for washer bottle and brake reservoir. Didn't get time to start on the washer bottle but have done the MC cap. Not 100% happy as yet tho. Its well positioned but is putting pressure on the reservoir and might cause leaks. I need to have a better look at it before I decide whether to leave as is or cut out the shape of the reservoir.

On the corsa pedal reservoir you have the cap, well if it sticks up above the line of the bulk fire wall then you might need to cut out a bigger hole that's the shape of the top of the reservoir bottle, just slightly down from the cap mate, it's hard to explain! lol

Most of the weekend was spent drunk followed by hanging out my **** but managed to get a few jobs done.
I painted up the thermostat housing and breather/dipstick in my favourite colour then fitted up to the engine. I then spent a very long time renewing all the exhaust studs and working the thread with wd40 and then decided to do the same with the mount bolts and the 2 on the shell for the gearbox mount.
I'm all ready now to fit the clutch & flywheel then bolt it up into place. I just need to order a couple of nova engine mounts and a thermostat housing gasket. I noticed one of my mounts was different I think its an astra one? (nova on right).

What do you mean its broken are you planning on running the standard mounts with the let?
I would cut up some rubber hose/ old exhaust rubbers stuff it in the mount, then fill it up with some silicone/sealer. Stiffens them up nice
he's not running a let iirc lol

The top join in the rubber is cracked/non-existant. If I can't get another pair cheapo 2nd hand I'll just pack out these two for now. I want solid mounts but its something I can and later once its running. Same score with the diff browney. I'm fully aware of the benefits but its just not top of the list, especially when I won't be using the f28 when going rwd.

The engine in now back in and car on the ground on temporary suspension.
Need to get it turned round in the shop and its back end back up in the air as work starts on the other rear tub on saturday afternoon. Its a risky stratedgy, as we'll only have saturday arvo and full day the following saturday to get it done to be able to make Billing so the heat is on.
The gearbox is sitting closer than I remember to the chassis so may have to fold that a little yet but I'm still not 100% happy with the engine position so will do that first.
I had a white rocker cover but as you can see by the pics its not quite a perfect match so I'm getting another one sprayed this weekend.

It is! I've relocated the washer bottle and brakes so they are more central to the car. I've removed the many layers of heavy vaux paint and replaced them with lightweight aftermarket paint. This list goes on ;)

Picked up the Porsche yesterday - what a pig!!
The car has been stood for quite some time and all 4 wheels were flat and tyres pretty much rotten away so no chance of pumping up. It was stuffed up in the corner of the garden next to a lrage bank so we couldn't get in 2 free of the brakes on that side so we had to drag the hole car out and up the trailor. Took us a little over 3hrs!! Then we had the assache of getting it off the trailor the other end. Gave up being sutble and just dragged it off with another car! lol Just need to get it all stripped etc. There's still some very good bits still on it thatmite sell so may even make some off it too. :D

its pretty clean really considering the age and the fact its been sat in a garden for 10 years! The seats are in better condition than most nova ones I see.
I freed up all the brakes tonight bar the lefr rear, will need a sledgehammer for that then I can get it pushed up in the corner out the way to be stripped down.

Rear diff and gearbox yeah. The older porsche's use a transaxle which means the diff and gbox are all one unit at the back. This is how they get the excellent handling from the 50/50 balance.
you need to take a month off an get this finished lol

Its just money mate stopping me. I need the following to get it running in current guise...
Fuel tank,
Fuel pumps & reg
ECU
Springs
Windows
Ingntion system
hoses
new brakes (discs & pads)
Driveshafts
Buckets
Thats what I can think off for now. All the above are needed to go rwd anyway with the exception of the equal shafts which will easilly sell on. The hope is to be able to get a trackday in before end of autum then I can work on getting the porsche gear in over winter.

I can't work out what's going on there - what are the new plates for?
Tubs look awesome though :thumb:
The Simps
05-07-09, 06:41 PM
To get nice straight line and clearance for the inside edge of the tubs you need to cut open the chassis legs and then re-plate them. The rear pic you can see that the chassis has been completely cut and now needs re-strengthening on the inside edge. Kinda like this....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/TheSimps/chassisleg2.jpg
Where the chassis has been removed (red) the exposed chassis needs re-plating and closing.
