I failed at taking progress pictures! But...
- Turbo sorted
- Brand new airflow meter
- Painted strut brace
- New driveshaft
The car has never felt better. The engine is uber smooth now, no more wheel wobble and it seems to fuel better. Airflow always seemed to give trouble so I'm glad to have replaced it!

Can't say I'm normally one for the minty minty road going builds, but that looks gorgeous, love the dark grey contrast.

Round the back of the inlet onto a t-piece. It's the best place to locate it as it's hidden under the top hat cover :-)

UPDATE!!
I always try to do one or two tiny adjustments each year, just to keep me interested in the car.
This year I had the strut brace painted and.....
Fearless Short Mirrors, yes, Genuine 90's Fearless made shortened Mirrors, as featured on Matts Nova (Brett Warburton's old car)

No idea mate, I got them through Nick who's been in touch with Matt. I paid Matt within about 30 seconds after he mentioned selling. I knew that as soon as they would hit this website for sale they'd be gone LOL
Very chuffed with them, they are very well made.

If the weathers good, maybe. I wasnt a fan of the show last year. I mean a standard 1.2 Saloon nova got Best Engine bay.... :wtf:

I'm sure the rocker is a clue of future wheel colour choice....
Love the mirrors! Always an awesome addition :)
Thats exactly what I said to Keith some time ago....... I think the only thing that holds him back is the car would look very similar to Andys If he did go down the dark wheel route and he didnt want that which I can perfectly understand. But on the other hand without a shadow of doubt I know the car would look stunning with the same colour applied to the wheels!
The car looks great with the new mirrors Keith their a credit to Dave on how well they are made/sculpted. An excellent addition for an already top car.

Nothing much to report really. I'll be swapping over my header tank for a new original this weekend, and hopefully getting it taxed for some summer driving. It will need new front tyres soon, and MOT at the end of April.
My new car is getting all the attention at the moment!

Yeah its completely different. They are so so well engineered, it just feels so well put together and inspires confidence. The Nova makes me nervous somethings going to snap everytime I nail it LOL
nice 911 Keith! cracking value the 996's now.
Cheers, Yeah they are superb value. I fancied a 993 but they are over 20k now for a good one. I think I'll keep this for a while and upgrade to a 997 in a few years. Is that your 964? Beautiful cars, I'd love one but I'd have to sell the Nova as it would be more of a Toy.
so keith the ultimate question, whats the plans for it???
I've fitted a pair of Miltek silencers, and the wheels could do with a refurb to make them spotless and I want the calipers painted red. As said the main plan is to keep it in great nick and upgrade to a 997 in a few years. I'd love a GT3 but it may never be within my reach, but I'll keep working hard and see what happens!

it is, yes. Its actually a late 3.2 Carrera, but with the cup wheels on it:

Had it about 18 months and was originally looking for either a 964 or an Impact Bumper. The 964s i looked at seemed to have some big big bills in the service history so decided to go IB. Like you though, a GT3 is on the wanted list.
Enjoy...

993's are crazy money. A low mileage turbo fetches over 100k. Thats more than a year old 997 GT3 RS, which i'd rather have (If I could ever afford it!)

Havent used the Nova much this year. Had it up a run to a local track earlier in the year to watch the NiSevens (Sevens/westfield competition)
Soon after, the alternator failed, and I lost interest.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/971934_10151500470035882_714655915_n.jpg
One new alternator later, and it's back on the road.
I need two new front tyres though and funds are low with our big holiday coming up, but with them still legal I've had it out another blast. Reminding me just how awesome it is!

Just incase anyone misses the point of the above picture - took the Nova T to a weigh bridge today, about 15 litres of fuel left and some other random stuff laying around inside the car = 920kg.
Makes a power to weight of around 300bhp/tonne. :)
Keith

Thought you'd had enough and weighed in in lol
Not a bad weight at all considering you have a full trim in their and an f28 etc. More than enough with that power to weight ratio. ;)
Nick.
lol now now benn
keith - yes the boat prices are a bit of a joke tbh
Just had a good read through this epic build and thats an awesome build and a stunning nova in the process and I totally agree with yous on the price of the boat as I travel from stranraer to N.I and its extortionate for tickets i try and wait as sometimes they have a £50 day return on with a £10 for each extra passenger then book it the other way lol
Genuinely surprised at that weight
Think mine was about that with a let in it too Luke...
krobinson
14-07-14, 01:05 PM
I've not used the Nova a lot this year, not as much as I'd hoped. The 911 gets much more use and has taken most of this years man fund.
Missing billing though has spurred me on to sort out some niggles and get the car over in 2015.
Plans are:
- Engine out
- Crank oil seal fixed
- Repaint Gearbox
- Re-powdercoat running gear
- Fit Power steering
- Fit Quick Rack
- Possibly swap to MK2 bootlid
- Repaint bumpers
- Do wheels same colour as rocker
- Possibly look into getting a new LET loom made
Anyone know a company that would make a brand new loom up?
Keith
I'm sure the rocker is a clue of future wheel colour choice....
Love the mirrors! Always an awesome addition :)
Ha, thought so!
Will look great I think.
Tempted by a vinyl rear end?

Harnessing solutions made my loom for the standalone and did a excellent job too, maybe worth calling them with your requirements
krobinson
16-07-14, 09:51 PM
I just recognise my loom is 20 years old. The odd time I get a bad connection to my AFM and it causes dodgy running. A new loom would help make it über reliable. Want to take it back to Europe next year hopefully!
Will give them a shout once I strip the engine out.

Spotted a GT3 aero kit a month ago, right kit, wrong time, bought it and emptied the man-fund. After holidays I'll be building it back up to fund the work for the Nova.

Well, here we go again.
The shell was painted in 2007 and the finish was flawless, I used the car properly for 5 years and less the past 3, now I feel it's time for a refresh.
Some issues arose from the Acid dip, which appeared much worse than they actually are. Thankfully on inspection the car is still absolutely mint. However I'm going to replace both arches and convert them to single skin to "future proof" the next build (the double skin has started to slightly warp). Other things to sort are an oil leak, and I might look into a new engine loom & ECU for more adjustability.
New colour? Don't know. The biggest challenge will be sourcing a painter who can match the previous finish.
And so, here begins another build.

Some people have impossibly high standards lol look forward to seeing the work put in to this.
Look well as it is lad. New build should be immense
Love that you're re building/freshing up again.

Plastic splash guards for inner wings? Yes, they exist, from Lokari

They were even standard on MK2s in north countries like Sweden (as also headlamp washers)

Wow, big job ahead! Was actually wondering about the durability of a dipped shell. Keith, do you think the quality of dipping and the subsequent electrophoretic coating lives up to your expectations, or would you do things differently should you do a similar type restoration/build?

I would never do it again, my perception vs reality was way out. I feel I wouldn't be doing this now if I'd just painted the shell instead as it was absolutely brand new when I first started and has been dry stored in a heated garage/carcoon since.

No, sold it 2 years ago.
Have you have paint issues like Edd?
Not so much paint issues, but rust issues. Thankfully a lot less than I first thought.
The arch seams have warped/split, however thankfully the rest of the car is fine (so far), last place to check is the engine bay once the engine is out, but on the face of it with the wings off it's all still perfect.
Plan is arches/quarters, full paint, management.

Bloody hell that is crazy :o Needing quarters / arches only a few years after all that work and especially as you have kept it dry and looked after it.
Must be gut wrenching when you realised it wasn't living up to the expectations :(

If the rust for the dipping do you think? Shame it's you've had issues, but at least its stuff that can be sorted.

It was dipped 8 years ago last month, it's a little longer than a few years. The way I look at it, some novas were rotten after 8 years from new, so it's come as no surprise really to have a few blemishes.
It's only the lip of the arch thats going, anyone else would probably rub them down, rust treat and paint. But I'd rather get to the source of the problem and thats the double skinned arches, replacing them with single skin.

Confident it's all down to the dip, i've read online that many others have had issues, including expensive porsche/ferrari's following the process, so take from that what you will.
Colour change is possible, still undecided.

Not decided yet, just got some test cards to see how I feel
What a fantastic thread and loverly car, I am a little concerned about the rust coming through even after the e-coat as that's exactly the route I was thinking of going down only my shell is already showing signs of rot in the wheel arches and front valance so if that's what happens to a mint starting shell I'm going to give it some hard thought wether I do or not as I had got my heart set on it, the colour of he coat seems differant to what they use now though maybe they have had problems with the mix?
Also I know how frustrating ordering panels and they arrive dented can be as i am currently having the same problem with some doors I've ordered, even the replacement one I had sent is folded at the bottom (should straighten but not ideal I thought I'd just been unlucky with the delivery driver but maybe it's not the currier.

The vast majority of the shell is still absolutely perfect, however I wrongly assumed that it would last forever, given that it was a perfect as/new shell which had no previous repair. Do your research before you do anything. The internet is flooded with stories of similar issues now, which wasn't around at all when I had it done in 2007. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't do it, and I wouldn't recommend anyone do it either.
Keith
Seen everyone has issues. 2 cars here, seen a evo that has major probs and a Porsche too.
As Benn says lots of stories about this process. My dad had his race car shell done by spl Birmingham an the shell seems ok so far but the doors an bonnet are starting to rust as the acid weeps out. As Keith says be very wary of it a think hard before you do. Again the stories weren't around when my dad had his done in 2008
I hope the strip down an rebuild deal with the issues you have Keith. looks like the end result will be even better with no issues in the future an piece of mind

HouseAtreides was telling me about soda blasting a couple of weeks ago I'm thinking maybe this might be a safer method.
i was mainly concerned with any blasting that your only getting where the gun can get but I guess they only seem to rot in certain places and those places are usually where the weather and road salt etc can get so do the crevices you can't get to really matter, after all the car is 22 years old and only has isolated rust spots. at the end of the day if it ain't broke why fix it I suppose.

SPL are incapable of doing a decent job imo
There process is second rate, pretty much like there customer service
ProStrip have a far superior process
The chap I spoke to has had countless customers who have work done by SPL that he has had to put right
My shell has had to have things done to it by previous owner and me to rectify shoddy work by SPL
but my arches are starting to look not great, no rust but starting to look a different shape, probably need doing in 2/3 years

Check out dry ice blasting. This leaves zero residue and doesn't bring in heat which in turn could warp panels. I've seen a demo on video and think it's quite impressive. (sorry for hijacking your thread Keith)

Looking back now, I could have just had arches put in. But it's kind of got out of control now and there's no going back. I'm looking forward to an even tidier loom and even more reliable running.
Underside still looks greats. No rust in sight.

My wishbones are boxed in with crush tubes in between. So I run my balljoints below the wishbone with that spacer then to lower the tie bar even further to clear the F28. Works well as the wishbone runs level even with the car nice and low :)

Hhmmm that sounds much better. MY ball join is on top of the arm, which doesn't help my arm angles.. Why have i never thought of moving it down?

With the shell away, it was time to finally sort out all the bits I removed. The crank oil seal was leaking so essentially everything underneath the car was covered in oil.
Engine on the stand, degreased / steam washed:

I'll repaint the block and replace the crank oil seal, sump gasket and replace the timing belt before going for mapping.
Gearbox degreased, cleaned and ready for fresh paint:

Arches going in, William has put in the spot welds for originality, and the arch is now single skin to remove the "Achilles heal" issue of moisture between the panels.

What have i missed? Why are you restoring it again?
Despite my best efforts, some of the spot welded seams started to split. On inspection this seams to have been caused by the Acid dip and e-coat not doing it's job. Since finding all this i've found lots of examples of his happening on other cars so i'm not alone.
So my friend William is drilling out spot welds, removing sections, and repairing. Thankfully it's fairly minimal but one of the main bits was the rear arches, which began warping after about 3 years. Thankfully when sections have been cut out, inside all the box sections look completely brand new, so this latest work should hopefully be the last time it needs done.
Needless to say I'd steer clear from acid dipping, It has it's positives (inside box sections), but clearly sometimes it just can't clean and re-seal some tight spot welded dual skins.
Keith
Thats not good at all.Kind of defeats the object of having it done i suppose.

Essentially just check anywhere thats spot welded dual skin. Loads of mine is perfect, some bits had split/widened and when cut out had rust in between the panels. All small areas but time consuming to put right.

Keith, I found the below comment on landrovernet.com, surely you have read yourself up on this subject? If not, then I hope this is useful info. Not clued up on Dinitrol products myself so I could be misinformed here.
Internal, you can use DINRC800,this will convert the rust to a hard, stable organic compound.
External I would apply a very thin coat of ML3125 cavity wax to the chassis as it contains rust inhibitors and will act as undercoat for the underbody wax 4941(black) or 4942(brown)
For wheel arches and high abrasion areas then use 447 in place of 4941,4942 but still apply the ML3125 first.

Media blasted, glass/soda will be best.
Looking great. Make sure you dont put your hands on the bare bits, as the salt in your sweat can be a killer.
Hahaha are you fukkin serious?!!! Whatever next?!! "Dont buy ready salted crisps as they may leak out?!"
Andy just cos your paint doesn't stay on beyond corner 1 doesn't mean others shouldn't want perfection lol
If youre sweating to the point youre corroding steel then the corrosion would be the least of ones worries lol
anyway rubbings racing.plus i apply it very thin to keep weight down lol

Lol
You'd be amazed how quickly clean hands leave rusty fingerprints on unprotected steel!
I work with the stuff every day cant say iv ever noticed.Mind i must have good skin ph levels lol

It's very true. If you propley lean to paint with water base paints they tell you to never touch the paint before as the salt can get in and start to rust and it can damage the base coat.
And as keith is going all out again to get the perfect job. I just wanted to help him get the best he can.
Plus i've seen other builds where people have found rust starting to appear on cage tubing after a few days where they've touched it.

Well not a huge amount has happened since I got the shell home. I'm saving hard to get enough to paint it properly, and I've decided to go a different route with the interior. I've sold the alcantara setup and I'm looking at cages. Waiting on a few prices then I'll order once I'm happy.
Lack of photo for all the work...

Haven't updated this in months.
Car is now painted, finish is flawless and I'm super happy with it.
Rollcage ordered from Fabricage, double rear cross and harness bar - should arrive before x-mas.
Roof lining back in, windows in, fuel tank in, loom etc. Got lots left to keep me busy over Christmas.

It's been nearly 2 years since I stripped the Nova for its rebuild. It's been a long tough time and I couldn't have done it without the support from friends, family and my Mrs Terri-ann.
From the outset, the goal was to build it even better than before. To ensure it felt new to me, a decision was made to change the colour. Months of searching for something yielding nothing, until I found some old photos of a car I absolutely love - a Rubystone Red 964 911.
Choosing this colour meant selling off my interior and more and more cost, but I felt it was worth it.
The car isn't finished yet, but it's looking pretty complete. Wheel refurb is the next big cost and should happen next month, along with some nice touches like orange indicators. The rocker cover, strut brace and header tank are all going the same colour as the cage.

As I said on facebook, I think the colour is beautiful, have you decided what you're going to do with the wheels yet? I'm not sure what colour I would do them, so interested to know where your going with them.

Paint looks immaculate, but I'm not keen on the colour. Doing the wheels same grey as the cage could be a way forward :)

Well that looks pretty awesome! Reminds me of one from the late 90's that eventually went pink(ish) / blue / white.

Still undecided, with the paint being bold they need to remain subtle to keep the overall look toned down. Thats why the cage is blue/grey as is all the trim :)

Cheers Ian, yeah that was Martin Hill's car, it was a bright metallic pink - awesome car

Wheels could end up remaining silver, Will see how the engine bay turns out first as it's all going that grey (rocker / header tank and fearless brace)
Looking amazing. Love everybit of it.
