Right here we go, i can finally start of a project thread as i actually own my new nova and it is back home ready for work to begin.

Alot of you will know this as Andy's XE antibes and formerly Lozzie C's aswell, Andy did a sterling job of converting it to an xe from the 1.2 it was, all the bay has been prepped and had a H&H plating kit fitted, along with V6 brakes and polybushes throughout, unfortunately some prior bodgery on the oil switch allowed the switch to leave the block under some enthusiastic driving and unfortunately killed the engine, he then fitted a 2.0 8v which decided it too didnt want to be in a nova so that committed suicide aswell!

This was then removed and the car has sat in Andy's garage since about august last year!

After offering it to me for an unbelievable price which i couldnt say no to, so its with a fair bit of regret that ive decided to break my cav for it, i originally intended to use the xe from my cav into another one (the cav is very rotten underneath and had a 'friendly mot' last one it had and would never pass another one without a hell of a lot of work!

So against all ive said before about cavs not being donors, im using my SRi as one, yes i know how hypocritical this is but meh!

So anyways thanks to The_General_Chancer picking it up on his recovery truck she is now at mine (along with a nice pile of bits ive been collecting the last few weeks) and next weekend is when the cav dies and the nova will be resurrected!

Ill be gutted to break the cav as i really like it and think it looks rather good after ive chucked a few nice bits at it, but needs must and Andy's Antibes is too good a car to pass up and ill need a new home for my xe soon anyways!

Comments welcomed but please keep the 'hypocrite' comments to a minimum as im genuinely gutted to kill a cav!

Lets be honest here, the man has seen sense!

Best thing for a cav is the scrapyard in the sky! Thw XEs much better in a Nova!

lol lol lol

Spud I told you the amount of grief you are going to get:d

I know im in for a proper roasting but ill fire up pictures when ive got the engine out and you will see just how rotten it actually is:cry:

Lewis, i just want the engine in and running for now as its going to be my daily, but im sure ill fettle with it in the future, Andy wanted to paint the wheels white which i think i will do, she needs a bit of tlc to the sills which is only surface rust so will be rubbed back and painted and the underneath waxoyled aswell, there is an SR/SRi blue grey interior to go in but im tempted to see if a local coachtimmers will swap the antibes cloth to the SR seats to keep the interior looking factory but i dont know for now lol

John
27-03-11, 09:09 PM
Nice, hope your keeping the styling as it is. Mk2 sr seats will be good.

Unfortunately this is true of this one as its riddled with rot underneath and this nova came up cheaper than i wouldve expected and before i found another donor cav to be xe'd lol

Lewis.
27-03-11, 09:10 PM
sounds good mate, I've always liked the antibes is a strange sort of way lol would be good if you could put the antibes covers on the SR seats, supportive and original looking = win :D

if i am correct in thinking they are 17 inch kahns on the cav please put them on the nova my cousin had a mk1 same blue with them on when i was around 12 still to this day thought it looked awesome.

Spudly
27-03-11, 09:13 PM
Yeah Rob was saying the same, he said the rarity of them these days in his opinion puts them in a similar league as a sport, i do want to refit the coachline and 'antibes' decals along the side, and im going to rebadge the boot with 'vauxhall' 'nova' and ive found a '2.0i' badge from a cav and i think ill fit the '16v' badge from my cavs boot aswell:d

Early mk1's FTW as well

You keeping the bodywork as it is ? Looks very clean and original plus you don't see many Antibes nowadays

Theyre 17" khan reps actually and the wont be going anywhere near the nova as for one they look silly on anything bigger than 16's and theyre et37 so would need lots and lots of archwork so no:p

They will be for sale though:thumb:

i like it spudly :thumb: shame to kill the cav but i can understand why and at least its donoring to a good cause!!

i think you're defo going down the right route with getting the XE in asap and fiddling later, my original plan for the turbo was to have it done by september for trax but i've decided i want a few extra bits which will cost alot more in time and money lol

going on with the donoring jokes - the last cruise me and steve went to, some little 14 year old chav came looking at his cav and said 'thats a corsa engine' lmao i nearly died with laughter lol

Spudly
27-03-11, 09:26 PM
Aye i wish i didnt have to kill the cav but i knew it wasnt as tidy as it looked before i bought it as i know the car anyways, but for £400 i wasnt saying no lol

Lmfao @ the corsa engine comment, reminds me of when a lad at my work had been out on a night and had seen my mates vectra supertourer that we had fitted an xe to, and said i saw that vectra with the nova engine last night:tard:

Thankyou all for the positive comments, i was nervous announcing killing the cav but im sure a lot of you have seen this nova before and appreciate how nice it is and why im doing it, i think i will badge it as it looks plain and bare with no badges on it, looks like there is something missing, im unsure on the 16v badge but i reckon ill use the others though, Claire big time, im going to start stripping the loom and everything out of the cav on the nights after work so its more ready for the weekend, ive got friday to monday off to crack on with it so fingers crossed:d

27-03-11, 10:54 PM
Please dont put a mk2 dash in you'll spoil the whole mk1 thing and you might as well do a face lift to it while your at it, sacrilege tbh, it's a rare Antibes don't spoil it.

My mk1 dash hardly rattles at all and I've solid mounts and solid strut tops.

Shame to break the cav mate I know you love it, is the engine in good shape then?

My signature was right all along then lol

Spudly
27-03-11, 10:56 PM
Ill see how i get on with it for now tbf, engine has tappets that rattle for the first few mins but once warm they go quiet, even with 228k on the clock it pulls like a train and goes really well in the cav so i should be pretty good in the nova:d

Not too sure what im going to do for a system as i dont actually think ive got enough to buy one of those sportex ones just yet, this might be a touch of a problem actually:eek:

Spud when i converted my last one to a xe i managed to get my manifold from the xe mounted up to a 1.2 standard system, the car ran fine and was very sleeper ish at the time, even passed its mot with it lol

Tell me about it bud, i knew i was going to get a slating for being a hipocrite but ive said for a while the cav has terminal rot and although i did want to use the engine in another cav, i just couldnt refuse Andy's nova, seems almost like fate, i pick up an xe cav for £400 six months ago, run it daily and do the belts and waterpump and such, get to know its nice and reliable, then once ive got some money saved, up pops Andy's antibes for just the amount of money ive got, and along the way ive realised just how bad the cav actually is lol

Update as promised......

Woke up this morning to find it was chucking it down, great start there then!

Went and did a few bits of shopping (exhaust and alt belt and a few other bits) got back home had a brew and minced about for a bit and finally cracked on at about 1pm!!

So after a bit more mincing we cracked on, and started stripping the bay and loom out, and found some nice rusty bits that were hiding behind some smoke grey covered seam sealer, this car definately shouldnt have passed an mot three months ago.....

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110401-00088.jpg

Hmm, half the battery tray and inner chassis leg were stuck to the bottom of the battery and there was masking tape and alsorts in there...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110401-00091.jpg

Ans after getting to this stage we found that the bolts on the mount for the equal length shaft were rounded and we couldnt get the shaft out we were stuck and Ali (Mcgowan) spent ages trying to disassemble the cv joint (we had tried to remove the subfram and snapped three ratchets in the process) we have to chop part of the exhaust downpipe off (as the manifold nuts are rounded) and spent ages getting annoyed with the damn thing, no grinder so we chopped the slam panel of with tinsnips, which was really easy as it was rotted through!

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110401-00093.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110401-00095.jpg

And a dead cav...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110401-00100.jpg

Got to remove the bottom pulley and swap it over for my single v one, and somehow get the equal lenght shaft mount off in the morning then it can be dropped into the nova bay amd we can crack on with the wiring!!

Good progress....can you not weld a bolt head onto the rounded off bolts or is there no access to a welder? Failing that try grinding some new flat edges on the heads and use a smaller socket/spanner. I don't know what size they are so don't know if they are big enough to try it but just a suggestion :)

Sod you all, update time :p

Right as you know we left it last night with two cars with empty engine bays, and an engine covered in plastic sheeting and half a roll of duct tape just to keep it on....

This morning i went to my mates garage to procure a tin of penetration oil which he gave me cos he is ace, and he lent me this.....

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110402-00102.jpg

For the bottom pulley, which came off in seconds and was swiftly swapped for the machined down v pulley which Lee kindly sent me last week!
(after we had figured out that it will only line up a certain way that is, yet another thing we didnt know about on xe conversions)

So after taking back the battery gun and scoring some gunk from hellfrauds as Edd told me a few pages back i needed to degrease the engine a bit, we had this..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110402-00103.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110402-00104.jpg

And not long after we had this..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110402-00105.jpg

Oh and for all of thise who say an SFI box wont fit:p

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110402-00106.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110402-00107.jpg

And started to run into problems after this as the bolts for my old alternator are too long for the smaller bracket i have so i need two smaller bolts for that, and i also need an adjuster and bracket possibly from a smallblock 8v engine if anyone has any suggestions as to what to use for this here..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110402-00108.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/IMG-20110402-00109.jpg

But the engine is in and bolted, gear linkage is lined up and done, coilovers are on but need the top bolt sliding out a touch to bring the tyre off the spring platform and correct my massive negative camber, just the start and charge loom to wire up (once ive sorted and mounted the alt) and Andy is coming round tomorrow to point me in the right direction wiring-wise.

I think we havent done too bad in all fairness as we have run into a lot of problems and managed to finally get round them, but there is still lots to come over the next few days but thats it for day number two!

I spoke to Andy tonight and he said he did push the firewall back to weld the mounts on the strut tops so it might not quite be where the factory intended it to be, it does need the firewall pushing about four or five mil when you push the box home but it fits a treat and looks ten times better than a powercap imo:d

No the rad aint in yet, thats next job tomorrow, need to get my head round the wiring first tbf, and i reckon the way we went in with the engine the rad wouldve been destroyed if it was there first lol

Cant thank Rob enough for his help last couple of days:d

Good to see the engine in!
Fook that cav was rotten, looked tidy too.

Get the adjustable slider thing for the alternator, just bolts onto the inlet. (sorry if someones already said)

Wirings the easy bit lol

Now you see why i decided to break it, wasnt quite being as hypocritical as people thought lol

Think im halfway there as ive found the adjuster bar thing on Andys old alt which i had in my room, just need the rubber bushes that go into it and a 13mm bolt:d

I heard you mention smallblock alternator parts...if its 8 valve you need got all the brackets and bolts here for price of postage

Adam

Small block bits wont fit, theres nothing bolt it to.

I spoke to Andy tonight and he said he did push the firewall back to weld the mounts on the strut tops so it might not quite be where the factory intended it to be, it does need the firewall pushing about four or five mil when you push the box home but it fits a treat and looks ten times better than a powercap imo:d

Spud,

Cracking on at a fair pace :thumb:

You may want to push the firewall back a bit further as the XE rocks a fair bit on acceleration and deceleration and it will either a) rub the paint off the firewall creating a rust patch , b) rub a hole in the SFi box or c) both a) & b)

Have you got an earlier non dispack alternator bracket, that should fit without problems. I'll have a look in my box of bits to see if I have a spare one.

Edit - looks like you've found one now!
Joff

Spudly

I think ill give it a shove, see if i cant push it clear, but if you have one in your spares box it would be appreciated Joff as ive not got the rubber bush in mine so i still need to source one!

MattBrown
02-04-11, 11:44 PM
If you can't find a rubber bush, a 12mm 3/8 inch socket fits iirc.

Bit pikey, but will work untill you find one.

Spudly
02-04-11, 11:57 PM
Illl look into that tomorrow, cheers Matt, it aint pikey if it works and cant be seen lol

Good progress spudly...

Looks really nice in there mate, nice to see you cracking on with a Nova tbf, and one thing i will say like joffs said, you will need to do more if keeping the sfi box, if you have not already i would tiger seal the chassis/gearbox mounts up as the XE will move loads, mine did on my Silky GSi and it split the sfi box clean open, so i just got a power crap in the end!

Keep on it though mate.

Scott

Small update again today, Andy came round and sorted the wiring so fingers crossed thats now sorted, just need to connect the switched live in the bay to the coil feed and run an earth strap onto the gearbox as the cav didnt have one and once ive sorted two short bolts on the alternator ill connect up the start charge loom and it should be ready to turn over:thumb:

Did a few little jobs as when Lozzie C had it she managed to break the drivers door lock after locking her keys in it iirc, so the drivers lock was all bent in and mangled, so i disassembled an old lock i had in my toolbox and prised off the metal cover and replaced that, reconnected the linkage so the lock oprerates again, and somewhere along the way it had a quarter glass replaced with a clear one so i swapped that for a proper bronze one that Andy had supplied with the car, and i made a start on fitting the SR/SRi interior (didnt punch winder holes in the electric window doorcards that Andy gave me as i randomly had a pair i think from my old flair) so got the drivers doorcard replaced and the drivers seat fitted, then it started rumbling with thunder so i decided to pack up and timed it right as it threw it down just as i walked in the door lol

Anyways after my essy, some piccies......

Aye its quite shocking how bad it was underneath, its tempting to get vosa to come and have a look at it, getting a bent mot is one thing on your own car and you know whats wrong, but getting a bent mot for the purpose of selling it on to someone who doesnt have any idea is just dangerous, its lucky i knew it wasnt as clean as it looked before i bought it really but still i didnt know it was that bad!

you have 3 months from the date of test to appeal for corrosion related issued. but the fact yu have stripped it is a problem though, as when you call vosa they want to inspect it on the original test stations ramp. the fact its now scrap means they cant really do owt
