Mines an external one as per the normal nova MPi setup, think mines from a 2.0 cav/cally originally, dozy me thought for some reason that the cav one was internal so didnt bother looking/keeping the one from my cav, damn annoying as i shouldve done!

Think ill get one of the ones Jeff linked earlier on when i get paid, that should be the last spend i need to make, barring tax lol

Lewis.
05-04-12, 11:42 PM
fair do's then, so on the road end of this month then yes?

Spudly
05-04-12, 11:44 PM
Thats the plan, ill be gutted if its not as ive already booked national weekend with the nova's reg lol

Lewis.
05-04-12, 11:47 PM
no reason why it shouldn't be, got nearly 2 months to get it there! even if you just get a cheap pump to tide you over. Mines done and i'm a really lazy f*cker lol

Spudly
05-04-12, 11:54 PM
Two months, err try a month ya geek, national weekend is next month, but if ive not got the funds for a pump and tax, till the end of this month then that leaves me roughly two weeks for road test/teething issues lol

Mazz
06-04-12, 11:21 AM
Spud i've got pump if needs be...

Spudly
06-04-12, 11:27 AM

I think ill get shouted at by mr Jeff now, i kind of got the nova running today lol

My mate has a fuel pump he uses to drain the tanks on cars he gets to weigh in or break, and it turned out the be the exact bosch pump that i already had, i think it came from the calibra he broke when he xe'd the nova that 24sevenslacker now has, but that kind of got 'borrowed' and hey ho she runs again, and this pump aint anywhere near as loud as my old one, which if you listen to all the vids i posted when she first fired up, got progressively louder so was destined to fail right from the off!

But anyways, i went to go finish a few bits on it like sort the bulbs out in my clocks as some had blown, fit my horn and get the coilovers dropped down a bit more to level the car out, hoovered all the crap out of the battery tray and got the battery clamped up, and also fitted a spare sony headunit so ill have some entertainment for when the loud pedal gets boring (yeah righto haha) only took a few pics as it was pissing it down which its been doing most of the day, but other than find my oil pressure sender and get that fitted, i cant think of anything there is left to do for the mot now, just need to wait till weekend after next and i can run it in!!

Few pics as she sits now....

Oil pressure looks a touch high as well lol

Spudly
10-04-12, 07:32 PM
I think the guages all read a little higher than they should, temp guage seems to start from just below quarter for some reason so i think its just down to that, but now youve mentioned it, ill check the charge rate when im up there tomorrow night, and if youd read silly man Jack, i havent fitted my pressure sender, its lost in the boot full of crap somewhere lol

Oh and since ive just sold one of my mountain bikes, i now have the funds for mot and tax, so the mot has been rebooked for this saturday

The one I sent is about the same size as my LET.

My old mk1 had the wires behind the lighter slot, I just bought a universal cig lighter and put a fuse in the appropriate slot.

Edit: PM Colin he's bound to have a cig lighter kicking about.

Ill be having words with Benjamin when i next see him, and Southie mine doesnt have the wires as i wouldve noticed them when i had all the dash/wiring out, i can source one no problem im just wondering where to take my feed from lol

The only wires i found was the clock one's lol

im thinking of going from the battery direct, or from the ignition barrel etc..

Another little update, i only now have one thing left to do before the MOT on saturday

Went up to Rich's tonight as ive still not fitted my oil pressure sender (which i didnt end up doing as was more awkward to do than id realised but meh) but i did however modify the wiring and wire up my oil switch so i now have a working oil light on the dash, the foglight has mysteriously started to work again so im not complaining at all on that one, changed all three wiper blades as the ones she had were shot to pieces, fitted my clear side repeaters, and collected the money from one of my mountain bikes that ive sold to fund the tax/mot :d

Few pics, and i was actually looking round her for things still to do, and couldnt actually find anything!!

spud, a clutch cable is nowt, and tbh, its expected on an xe conversion, its probably circled the moon twice already... my car had the benefit of onnly 6800 miles on it when i started pissing about with it...

i have also driven vehicles more than 200 miles with an inoperative clutch before, so i'd have just kept going.....it teaches you a lot about mechanical sympathy, starting in 1st, and then rev matching thru the box....

She has indeed got a tilt slide sunroof, really happy about that as I think they're ace, and thankyou, I'm really happy with how she looks now complete, think I might wind the front coilovers down another 10mm though as she still looks a touch too high!

Mazz, I did try it with the early SFI box on but it didn't seem to look as good and seemed to foul the firewall even more than the later one:eek:

Another mild update, over 100 miles done now and still nothing fallen off which is good lol

Dropped the front end down today as it was a touch too high, and discovered that id neglected to remove the lug on the gearbox which fouls the tiebar, so we needed some tlc using a grinder which Tommy kindly did for me, along with 'adjusting' my rear arches as they caught the tyres under load

Removing the lug on the box...

Bimbled up to see Joff yesterday, sterling chap that he is, fitted an immobiliser for me as taking the ecu out everytime i went to work is/was a bit of a pain, plus i want the ecu behind the dash out of the way!

Didnt take any pics as i didnt want to get in his way and i was busy removing the rotten/snapped jubilee clips and old heat wrap from my exhaust, horrible stuff that, went all over me and im still itchy lol

Then took him up the bypass in it and i was surprised that he thought it fairly quick (in comparison to his 300bhp let)

And of course i had to snap a pic or two whilst i was there :d

Had to get Joff in shot, along with his nova and both meriva's lol

People seem to either not think an egg can cause damage, or simply dont care but eggs do a right load of damage to paintwork, they leave a circular mark where the eggshell smashes and chips the paint, very messy and usually means that panel needs painting aswell:cry:

Are the bearing easy enough Spud? I think mine is dying slowly. Are they pressed in, or just secured with the circlip?

Spudly

Circlip and pressed, luckily Rich has a press in his unit which made the job a million times easier, ive got to do the rears tomorrow now as the nearside one has run dry and makes a squealing noise which luckily Rich heard as i moved the car (cant hear it inside) but he has left me the use of his unit tomorrow so all will be good!

Only downside is that it gives stiffer feel to the pedal, and you need to watch where you route it as you can trap it between the fuel rail and SFi box and you dont want that as it will stick at full chat:eek:

I checked before firing her up btw, few sharp presses of the pedal to the floor and back, then checked for everything returning too, also gave the inner a good dousing in wd40 before fitting it and left it hung up for a couple of hours to run through:thumb:

Spudly
27-04-12, 07:27 PM
Nah my rears are fubarrred, i didnt have any grease covers for them till i went to scrappy today, so 200 miles without them, plus being stood for about a year and a half has finished them off, not surprising really but all part of the running in miles i wanted to do on the car, as id rather not find all four wheel bearings, and the clutch cable failing on the way to the national weekend, id rather it be local so ive got time and access to the unit to get it all done!

I did something similar with the throttle and wasn't keen on the stiffness... Means its scrubbing the sleeve and not moving freely. I then re-routed mine so you can only see a small amount of it and it still moves freely, I'll try and get a pic at some point.

If you could, it would be appreciated, im going to see what the original cable feels like routed the same way but im not overly happy about this, hence me mentioning it feeling stiffer!

28-04-12, 03:12 PM
i would just like to point out that people working in a gearbox place do not design gearboxes. gear oil is by far the best stuff for a gearbox, just as atf is perfect for an auto transmission. personally i hate gear oil, and atf is far nicer to play with, but i don't use it on manual boxes. it is designed to grip as it goes thru the workings of the box, so it will actually lose performance in a manual box. also you sort of ruined your argument by pointing out it previously had atf in & was crap.... sorry. i will not say any more on the subject.....

Spudly
28-04-12, 09:26 PM
I didnt say it was crap before at all, its just a case of i didnt know what oil was in it, plus it had and will always lose a little oil when you drop the engine and change the shafts, so i had no idea how much was in there after that, so rather than trying to guess, it was easier just to drop it and change it, had bits of swarf in there aswell so its all nice and clean now and obviously newer oil, it feels smoother than it did previously!

And no i know Andy and Rich didnt design gearboxes, but after years of experience in the field clearly know a lot more on boxes than i do, so i listened to their advice and put atf in :p

Btw big update coming, spent nine hours machining and polishing her this afternoon, im fooked

Here's my 10p worth. I worked at vauxhall for nearly 10 years, the gearbox oil is actually gearbox oil, just it's red in colour from the factory. The red gear oil is no longer available, it's now completely clear. I had a pic on my old phone showing the part number, it wasn't the same as atf. Anyway......... looking good spudders, needs more lows!

Ahh in which case it might not've been atf before but it is now lol

Right, spent nine fecking hours on this beasty today, the paint is still really bad but i only used G10 on it as i didnt want to take too much off the surface as i dont know how thick the paint is, i think a respray will be needed for next year, but anyways....

Stripped the reg plate and wiper off the boot lid and masked up everything i didnt want to splatter with compound....

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/40197766.jpg

Mopped and polished the boot and then panel wiped it before measuring and fitting the badges with the help of Andy, who helpfully turned up for a coffee just in time!

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/ed366601.jpg

The way i machine polish cars, i do it a panel at a time, and hand polish each one as i go along, that way im polishing off the excess compound and putting a layer of polish on so that the compound doesnt stick to the polished panels as im moving round the car and machining the other panels..

Paint looks good, not feeling the badges though and where are you centre caps?

Andy
28-04-12, 10:48 PM
John i had red gearbox oil in feb last year and again in my combo last month on warranty gearbox jobs.
Atf is nigh on the same viscosity and is most definately the same cat piss smell.
I gave filled hundreds of manual Vaux,Vw's,etc etc on ATF and none of them ever came back for gearbox issues.
I know of at least 5 (off the top of my drunken head) boxes that still run it to this day from back in 05/06/07 when filled up with no issues.
Said garage, always has,and still does use ATF to this very day with no complaints.
Citroen/peugeot/renaults generally had engine oil put in.
"Gearbox" oil is the most overpriced junk there is for a car,far too thick and gloopy, resulting in bollox changes from cold=bolloxed gears.

Oh are the badges in the right place? also im not kean on the 2.0 16v badge dude, just never have been a fan of that.

EDIT: Just found this from my mk1 thread, RE Badges position, so unless you wanted them in that position there not quite right dude.

The 2.0 16v wont be staying long, the 2.0 is the wrong font, ive got an 'i' and a '16v' to match the nova and vauxhall but i wont fit those till ive sourced the correct '2.0' one!

Centercaps cant go on as ive now fitted the grease covers on the rear drums (as i didnt have any before) and now the rears wont go on, i was going to make a thread in mechanical to ask about that one, how have others managed to fit speedline caps as they foul the grease caps:cry:

But back to the badges, as Andy said, they look way better in the flesh and im glad ive fitted them as the boot looked too plain with nothing on!

Oh and Scott, im going to dig out my bumper gel and give it all a going over in the morning, dont quite know where its gone but ive got a bottle somewhere lol

I had Speedlines on mine for years, used the car daily in all weather for a good few years, and never had the dust caps on the rear, could just pack them with copper grease and then place some gaffer tape over them lol

Ive done 200 miles without and its killed my rear bearings which ive just replaced, ive been told under no circumstances to run them without again as they get hot and all the grease runs out and lets the bearing run dry, hence my bearings needing replacement after just 200 miles!

Lee H
28-04-12, 11:32 PM
Sure the bearings weren't done up too tight? Loads of people have ran Speedlines for years with no caps and no problems. I did over 5k on mine with the bearings that were on the car when I bought it.

Spudly
28-04-12, 11:34 PM
Nope, they were done hand tight, then a quarter turn with a ratchet then split pinned, as how ive done the new ones which Andy checked for me this aft and said felt bang on, nice and smooth and no wobbles:thumb:

Connor
28-04-12, 11:39 PM
I would run them with the dust covers personally, but i ran them without for about 8 months and did like 6000+ miles in them with no problem.
I just packed them with grease, and then completely forgot about it, i only remembered when i took my wheel off to change a tyre lol.
Your bearing shouldn't of packed up after 200 miles imo, probably didnt help that fact that the cars been off the road for so long.

I just thought i even had mine round Silverstone on at trax round the track, did a full open pit day at Donnington, and let Chris Slater have a go, and he cooked my rear drums till the paint pealed off! so IMO you can run them like it, theres two of us that have mate.

28-04-12, 11:58 PM
Well i had that car from what 2003 to 2006/7 on the road, and in that time i had to change the front bearings twice, and the rears never lol

BUT i had to replace the old track cars ones twice in one year on the rears, so im guessing they must seize up when a car is sat for long periods etc??

now thats crap advice...

with my work, i use a lot of grease in various applications.

grease has a habit of expanding and becoming runny when hot..when you pack a hub with grease, you need to leave some air expansion room, but you need to seal it up so you don't get any ingress of moisture, in the form of condensation from it cooling down, which is why you should put the cap back on.
