You will get one hell of a blow job with them fans buddy, only kidding !
Yet more spending, im building a vast parts collection aswell as devastating my bank balance
These originally came from (so im told) Sean (Srs-1's) old red xe GSi, and im told theyre kent cams, but the end stamp is 'BP270' and i thought 'BP' was piper, is it not?
Also they have a 'GM' stamp on them so ill guess theyre remanufactured/reprofiled standard XE cams yes?

Brand new and unused as can be seen in the pic:d
Ive also stopped working weekends at the pizza shop i was at, so more free time for me to get to work on the nova = good times:thumb:
shiney :D how big are those fans? do they both fit on a standard GTE rad?
Looool, nope theyre 10" and just too big unfortunately, so ill just be using the one i think, two 8" ones should be spot on though, but youre still limited as to how to actually fix them on as the ties that go through the rad are only really meant to take up any slack in them apparently, they would probably rip free under road/driving vibrations and such if theyre not securely mounted!
oh that crap then lol how are you meant to mount them if not with ties?
oh, wanna sell me one? :p
I reckons your right about the cams being Piper, the two Piper cams I had were marked with BP as well
Nice collection of parts Spud, should be very nice when its all done
oh that crap then lol how are you meant to mount them if not with ties?
oh, wanna sell me one? :p
We ended up mocking up two metal brackets which pick up on the original bolt fittings on the rad itself and we shouldnt need to use the ties for anything more than taking out any play in it, and possibly :p
Cheers Edd, since its clearly no longer a 'drop it in and job jobbed' affair, ive taken my time to buy proper bits and some rather fussy shiney bits too, im hoping it should look awesome once finished, and not go too badly either:d

Perfection imo, theyre staying and i think they work really well, front is coming down another 20mm to level her out but that will be all externally, oh and im really going to have to crack on soon, as the astra is in for mot at the weekend, and im booking the nova in for the last weekend in march so she has to be done:d
Love it Spud, awaits the haters comments lol
Cheers Graeme, i lobbed the pics on FB yesterday and only had a handful of negative comments, i dont care as i really think they make it, they clean her up fantastically imo and i love it, they show off the big brakes on the front more i think, and im itching to get her up and running now :d
*Negative/hater comment coming up*
Too big/not enough lows. Too mk2. All IMHO :)
Back is on -70mm custom springs, and have never been on a car so will settle in lower, front was set level with the old springs so i reckon will need to come down another 30mm so it settles right, i think she looks stunning and mk1's pull speedlines off properly, mk2's need a GSi kit to make it look right lol
Looks really tidy Spud! Once running and the better weathers here It would be great to see it at a meet.
Nick.

Love the colour, with the front bumper on straight and it lower, I think it looks great.
are you running 195x45 or 195x40's, 40 are better.

Was just about to ask what profile they are, as they look huge imo! need less tyres wall on them and about 90-100mm rear and 80mm front and that will look ard! But do think SL's look better on mk2's imo.
Getting there tho Spudders.
Scott
Im really starting to regret selling you this!
As per this morning,i think white would still win!
BTW cheers for the lift,i really do owe you one!!!!!

Looking good buddy, keep working away at it and get it on the road, i like speedlines in general, they usually only suit mk2 novas, but look good on quite a few mk1's also imo
mk1nova_rich
20-02-12, 10:15 AM
If im honest Spud the Cesaros suited it better :) but then again my opinion is invalid after going Mk2 lol
I'm unsure on the rims dude, rest is looking great.

I'm unsure on the rims dude, rest is looking great.
Surely a mk1 on speed lines is rare nowadays, lol? The mk1 crew would have lined him and shot him once upon a time.
Looks well on the new wheels imo.
mk1nova_rich
21-02-12, 09:21 AM
Yes and i personally broke the starship enterprise, the warp core is under my nova's bonnet right now lol
And in all fairness genuine ones from A-V are £160 i dont think thats massively bad, but if the lad in the link Jeff posted is selling gen ones, then £80 is even better:d
Was £160 after PNG discount?!
Can't honestly say i'm feeling the new wheels mr.potato :/ Might be the ride height though..
I do kinda like the speedlines on it purely as you don't often see them on a Mk1. Disagree with Andy though, I think if they were white they'd stand out too much.
Cesaros would probably suit the car a little better, epsecially if you wanted white wheels. Swap for mine? lol
Cesaros are for sale jacky boy, and mass the front is far too high as I've bought some -70 rears and the ones previously were only about 40/50 so the front is obviously too high!
I think the lines will stay silver as they brighten the car up loads and I think white would be ott, I wonder if mr south would play photyshop for me lol
Oh and on another note, I had a belting insurance quote from sky today so I'm now desperate to get her running so I can book her in for mot!
Im convinced white ftw, when i bought it off lauren it had white wheel trims on and looked good with those on,so i always saw it in an ideal world with white MO's or alessios,of course it has dikk all to do with me now,its spuds choice!.
Heres a few pics of white speedlines from the great let_nova...i think they look rather well:d
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/incanova/car047.jpg
Stop it you nasty little man, leave me alone :p
MK1s with speedlines and no skirts need to be low. Lower than you've planned.
195/40 profile tyres would help tremendously and get it lower too.
Ever considered lamin-x for the head lights and all red euro tail lights?
All IMO, just being really critical on what is a nice fresh looking Nova.

Liking the pin stripe, although that just shows up the lack of rubstrips on the sides, and at the mo wheel colour isnt a priority tbf!

LMFAO
Yeah its not an ideal shop, but meh lol. I still think it would be too OTT due to the size of the wheels.

Vids to follow:thumb:
Well after some conversations with my good mate Andy, he grew bored of me having not completed the wiring and such on the nova so he kindly trundled down from up the coast to bail me out, cracked on with getting the fourth speedline on (had a puncture repaired this week) and got the exhaust system on and clamped up as it was only on the manifold.
Andy landed and cracked on with the wiring, which he finished in minutes  whilst i changed a couple of the oil breathers for the first of my roose hoses, good thing i got the breathers as the two off the back of the rocker were both perished, and the roose hoses go on so easily theyre ace lol
And after a bit of mincing and such it was actually fire up time, remembered there was bugger all fuel i went on a dash to petrol station to get some, then we connected the battery and jump pack up (forgot to charge my battery) and then flattened the jump pack and she wouldnt fire up
Easy start in the inlet and nothing, checked the fuel pump, spinning up as it should, massively good spark and yet nothing, pulled the fuel lines off and cranked her over, not even a huff and a puff.
Turned out id got the fuel lines wrong where they come off the tank and to the pump, it was sucking on the return and blowing on the feed (Andy didnt do the pump lines honest lol) so we swapped them round and tried again, she was just about to catch as she tried a couple of times then Andy yelled to me to turn it off!!
Looked underneath and there was a massive puddle of fuel, huge leak somewhere which was annoying as she really was just about to fire up!
We were losing the light by this time so we dragged her over to the entrance to Rich's unit as he has an external floodlight, and Andy sourced the leak and solved it, time to try again, massive wave of fear washed over me as i went to turn the key, Boom, first time and she struck right up:d
I was overjoyed, i wanted to scream and shout and rofl my copter and everything lol
Still needs the lines tidying up and the wiring needs checking over as with the clocks unplugged, she will start up and turn off fine, with them plugged in she will fire up but not turn off, odd one but will be sorted!
Couple of very dark vids....
(oh and i have actually driven her too!!)

Yes the tappets rattle but they always did and shut up after about ten mins of running, plus the engine has been stood for a year!
Oh and we removed the oil cooler aswell and fitted a normal oil filter mount!
Lol what are you 'what'ing' about?

Tappy as all good XE's should be! lol
And not heard a NA none TB's XE in ages, forgot how raspy they sound!
Glad your getting there mate, must be odd to think you nearly have a nova on the road again..
Scott im like a little kid at christmas, im buzzing like a fridge lol
Definately booking mot for the end of march, i cant wait to get the hoses plumbed up and go for a blast in her:d
Lol what are you 'what'ing' about?
The fact that it's actually running! And as mine still isn't done, I now feel even more rubbish than usual lol
Yeah but look at it this way, it has taken me the best part of a year lol
But having said that ive picked up a lot of decent parts for it aswell that i wouldnt have had if id got it running the first time round:thumb:
Yay , great stuff mate , mot time next week then lol
Not quite, there is still a lot to do yet but it shouldnt be too far away now:d
Jeff16v
25-02-12, 09:23 PM
Top marks to Spud and Andy then, tappy as fook, but who cares.
Was always tappy as fook in the cav, will shut up once warm but since she has no cooling system yet we didnt leave her running for long!
Plus aswell the engine has been stood for nearly a year now, ill get the last of the cav hoses pulled off over the next week and the roose hoses on and then i can get the cooling system sorted and run her up properly:thumb:

top banana spud my friend,
always a good mate to lend a hand, well done you two! ,i know the feeling when it runs right for the first time, ive just found the cause of my issues on the s1 was a faulty crank sensor but it still ran ffs

25-02-12, 09:34 PM
I don't beleve it I thing you recorded the cav and dubbed the sound on to a video of a none running nova just to shut us up lol
scott.parker
25-02-12, 09:35 PM
Thing is the sound of tappets WILL and does come over worse from a video recoding etc..
Just landed back home now after practically emptying mcdonalds on my way home.I am now fat and stink of petrol,i loved it when it was leaking into my face-best bit was when it went in my mouth.Sig anyone? lol
Glad to be of service today, couldnt have watched months more of "new wheels" "lowered it" or "painted plug cover" lol lol lol
Lol at Rich, trust me mate im not that clever, Andy will back me up, she is alive and now moves under her own power, and what an awesome feeling that was, being able to put her away without having to push her, fantastic!!
Couldnt have done it without you Andy, and definately not without the use of Rich's tools, unit and the prior work that he has done, i would be about four months behind where i am now lol
JUst have to get my own bugger done tomorrow.Sadly cleaning valves up and my head is not as exciting as watching the 1st start, but i have all those worries to come (and worse!!!) like you had today lol
No but hopefully ill be up int'novva when its first startup on the pug:d
And i couldve cried when she refused to fire up lol
Result
Nice work chaps (Andy lol)
Bet your chuffed Spud lol
happy days spud
bet your well chuffed :)
Good to see its running. :thumb:
Were you not bothered in giving the engine a bit of a freshen up whilst it was out? (i know its going back a few months now.. lol)
Just thinking, the tapping etc, could all have been sorted easily whilst it was out. Especially with this being the engine with uber 200'000+ miles on it? If im thinking of the right car/engine that is.
Lol yes I knows it was silly but the tappets will be getting replaced when the cams go in, and you're right on the mileage, was about 226,000 iirc!
Hopefully I'll be up to do a bit more on it today, see if I can figure out what I've done wrong with the wiring now!

26-02-12, 11:45 AM
Just run in then:d
Isn't that the one of the feelings! When it first fires up :) Will it be at the nat's?
Youre telling me Mazz, i was bricking it when we were fueling her up and prepping for first start up, she had better be at bloody nationals but i cant see her not being as im aiming for completion tomorrow, been on her all afternoon today and got another full day tomorrow too!!
Went up and took a couple of pics first as she stood from last night.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/c2ed899f.jpg
Ignore the spazzy fuel line, that was purely to get her running yesterday!
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/655ed9f0.jpg
That was as she stood at close of yesterday, cracked on with shortening the five miles of fuel line from yesterday which i did and got it run all nice and tidy (only to find last thing tonight that its now leaking again so first job for morning now)
Then got onto removing the last of the cav coolant pipes (the returns from behind the inlet manifold) as id not realised id need them off while the engine was out, absolute pig of a job due to the jubilee clips being inaccessible, so had to remove all the breather pipework from the front of the throttle body/inlet and pull the banjo bolt out to get at them, had a bit of a head scratching moment figuring out some of the pipes and rang Rich to bend his ear too!
Really glad i went for the roose hose kit though as the fit is just perfect and they are so easy to install, got most of them on and clamped up but the rest i just put in place to work them out, so tomorrows jobs are to clamp the rest of them up, shorten the two pieces either side of the T piece and clamp them up, check the fuel leak and fill her up with coolant for a proper run up to temp!
Rad is all in and the front bumper is back on properly, once the cooling and fuel is sorted and she is run up, the dash is coming out so i can fit the ecu behind the dash and run all the wiring away, then its tidy everything up and give her a wash and call my mate about an mot!!
Few pics as i left her tonight, no car pics as it was about 9pm and pitch black!
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/16dcd02f.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Antibes/9c9266f8.jpg
Oh and i sourced the problem with her running with the clocks in and the ignition turned off, the clocks have gotten damaged in storage and the membrane is funked in a few places with four or so of the tracks shorting out across each other, so if anyone has a spare set of 6 dial mk1 clocks they dont need, preferably with a perfect membrane, send them my way please!
Thats all for now, until tomorrow!
With the roose hoses, do you get a nice Y/T pipe for the header return, or do you have splice into it as normal?
Needs clear side repeaters IMO, doesn't look right against the clear fronts
Coming on well Spud, I can't see mine being done for Nats now but hopefully PVS so we can have a race if you like and also I kinda like the speedlines on yours now I have got used to them...
Mazz, yes you get a nice shiney T piece to use and more length on the two between the rad and header tank than you need which is a good touch as you can run it where you want!
Jack, clear sides will be going on as i was going to put her back to amber front indicators originally, but now ive got the speedlines on they brighten it up so i think the clears will stay:thumb:
Balley, IF, i do pvs i wont be taking the nova, ill be in the astra so wont be anywhere near the strip lol
Had another good day on her today, got almost all of my hoses on and clamped up, but had a massive fail when it came to the heater matrix pipe, Andy had previously shortened one side to accomodate for the fouling issue on the inlet and i think i mustve ****ted it when putting the engine in as the short side had a weak spot, which when i clamped up the hose onto it, it collapsed on itself!
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/bef036c2.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/bc3f79ce.jpg
Took it off and straightened it out and tried to fit the hose further on, thinking of using Keiths idea of have the clamp inside the car but this also caused it to collapse again, so after a bit of advice from Rich i went to a local factors and got a section of pipe to bridge out the heater matrix for now so i could get the coolant filled and the engine run up to temp which i finally got doner after fitting the temp pipe!
I also sorted the fuel leak which turned out to be a section of pipe had split so i simply cut that section out as i had left a decent amount spare!
Once the engine was running for a bit the tappets duly went quiet as they always did in the cav, i still need a set of clocks though as the original ones have broken tracks on the back so the temp and fuel guages dont work, doh!
Had a bit of issue with it pressuring up which scared me as i thought my headgasket had left the building, but it seems not and it was simply an air lock, we left it running for well over half an hour and the cooling fan cuts in and out as it should which im happy with!
Few pics of how she stands at the minute..

Dude Ive got a heater matrix sat in the shed if you need it, i advise doing the rubber pipe on and through the bulk head next time mate.
I cant think why i didnt click to bridge it out myself, we ended up doing the same with Robs twelve door when we first took it to billing five years ago and it was me that suggested we do that back then, i think ive just melted my brain after three days of grafting on the nova lol
But its all just tidying up now (apart from the clocks) need a steering wheel puller to get the wheel off and the dash out and going to make some brackest to mount the ecu out of the way behind the dashand get everything tucked away neatly, then it will be a bolt check and ill aim for getting her in for mot end of march or first week or so in april:thumb:
Have to say its all down to Andy that ive got so far in just a few days, youre a star mate, thankyou very much:d
Scott, the lad whos unit im in at the mo knows someone who can re pipe my matrix (also going to see about availability at my local pages tomorrow out of interest) but my mate said his mate could swap the dead pipe for a new one and have it specifically shorter aswell!

Buy me some bottlethroddies and ill fit em:p

Should be close between you and me getting them on the road first

This has changed a bit since I ventured in here lol
1. Just about coping ... actually I like the Speedlines and usually I hate them on MK1's, it must be the Antibes blue.
2. Oh I also like the white indicators but I had them on mine so I'm biased.
3. Has to be the best feeling when you here the roaaar from the car starting, in your case tappy lol
4. Needs a blue pinstripe similar to the car or yellow, if it still had bump strips then it would definitely need a bright colour.
...^ Freaky look at the letters of the start of each sentance

Minor update on this again, (more will come this weekend, but for now, mini-update)
Recieved the airbox id asked about in another thread on here from 'pog' sterling chap and well happy with it, cheers bud:thumb:
So i went up to see how well the airbox fitted, need another pipe as the one that came with it is for a powercrap (doh) but ive sort of got it on for now, and decided to colourcode the 'SFI' lettering on the top box as i thought it looked odd against the 'bluetop' plug cover lol

More will come at the weekend as im aiming to have the outstanding jobs to do finished off and have her MOT ready!

Is the pipe plugged on at the back to the SPI box?
Wee have a winnnaaaarrr lol
Was properly scratching my head as i couldnt figure out what id done that would cause it to start, but not run, id moved the cts wiring but that would cause it to not start, id had the afm unplughed and again it wouldnt start without that plugged in, and then i remembered id had the breather off that back of the SFI box, oh look its still off, lobbed it back on, fired up and ticked over fine:thumb:

Another small update from today...
Got my newly repaired heater matrix fitted back in the box and remounted to the bulkhead, removed my bridging pipe and fitted the last two of the roose hoses to plumb the heater box back into the cooling system!
Got the dash out and moved the rubbed seal/bung further in on the ecu/plug loom to extend the engine loom further into the bay and allow me to run it behind the turret as it should be, tidied up the wiring inside the car, just need to get my mate Rich to fabricate some form of bracket to mount the ecu behind the dash as i dont want it on the shelf as i think that looks crap!
Few pics from today and hopefully dash will be back in and i can start rebuilding the interior tomorrow and get her tidied out/hoovered:thumb:

Yep original dash going back in, I was going to fit a mk2 dash but I'm trying to keep it as original looking as I can so the mk1 is staying, need to get my oil sender swapped tomorrow and the gauge wired in, just remembered that lol
Cheers Nick, I'll have to bring her for a run out to come for a nosey at yours once she is on the road, mot day provisionally two weeks today

Looks perfect, is that with a GTE radiator yes? Glad I bought one now, should solve the problem :)
Can't rep you, sorry :( can someone do it for me please?
Err yes i believe its a GTE/GSi rad, all the hoses are shaped so they fit perfectly, the one from the heater matrix to the back of the pipe behind the block loops under the inlet manifold perfectly, i can highly reccomend them :d
Where did you order your top hose from Lewis? And how muchos? I chopped up 1.2 is getting worse :/
Been following this while doing mine, looking good John i also need one of those pipes above as mine popped itself today lol, do powercaps make much difference on XE's?
Lol is that because youre using home made pikey hoses lol
I had bother with my old one, would get to about half on the temp guages and pop hoses as a regular thing, thats one of the reasons i wanted to get the proper ones for mine, have you managed to get your insurance sorted now then dude?
As for power caps, theyre supposed to give a better air flow and a little more torque, but i think they look poo and the SFi box looks so much better:thumb:
Where did you order your top hose from Lewis? And how muchos? I chopped up 1.2 is getting worse :/
Got it from Roose, they sell them individually. It was £27 inc VAT
Where on the website did you find the individual hoses, or do you have to ring them, im struggling to find a suitable induction hose, i want to run the corsa airbox ive got but the home made pipe that come with it is too long for use with an SFi box

Nah, just wants interior (dash really) fitting back in once the ecu is mounted, rear wheel bearings need tightening and split pinning, wants a new drivers engine mount, and the exhaust needs looking at, as its a full system from my mates xe GTE, but it sits against the floor on one side, im hoping it can be sorted by twisting it round but ive not looked into it yet lol

Mine will make nats and it's still blue at the min come on spud get it there
If its not at nats there will be no scrumpy for you my son!
No scrumpy for me then, there are just fiddly bits to do but when it's dark by the time I can get to it (if rich isn't working loads like he is) then I still can't get to do anything on it, rear wheel bearings still need tightening and split pinning, need to figure out why the exhaust is sat hard against the tunnel on one side, mount ecu and fit dash, drop front end down and try to set camber and still source some kind of induction pipe for the airbox, not a lot but pretty hard in the dark!

excuses excuses, all that work and your gonna miss the nats for a few fiddlely jobs :/
Any chance of a bottle of scrumpy Matt? can paypal you some pennies?
Not excuses, I don't want to rush it all and have the maiden voyage be the run to national weekend, only to find that I've missed tightening something or the engines gonna let go and I don't make it at all, I want it on the road for a month first to iron out all the teething problems I'll undoubtedly have!
If that means going in the Astra and putting her on the road afterwards then meh!

Moved the wiring loom grommet up again to give me more slack on the engine bay side, ran in the wire for my manual fan switch, and taped it all in with the main loom to hide it, refitted the dash and tucked the fuel pump relay and ecu up behind the dash out of sight, gave her a quick hoover and actually got excited about refitting a mk1 dash
And then gave her a quick run up the road/track to the unit and id forgotten just how quick they feel, torque steer anyone lol
Also id made myself a 'frankenpipe' as ive not found a suitable pipe to use with the corsa airbox so made a hole in another vaux pipe i had, fitted the air temp sensor and used a piece of pipe that was laying around for the bit inbetween the induction pipe and the cone filter, so now the bay is finished and the interior is done too, few more small jobs to do like fit some 'P' clips on the fuel line to the pump and she is ready to go :p

Getting there now Spud, when's the MOT?
Next couple of weeks definately, went and did a few small bits last night, got the rear wheel bearings nipped up and split pinned, I need the dust covers that go over the end, the caps you pack up with grease, where can I get some from as I have none?
The list of bits to do now is..
Sort coilover ride height.
Check the exhaust as it needs adjusting as it rubs near the back.
Fit horn which I've sourced from Colin.
Fit oil pressure sender (if I can remember where I put it)
Bolt check.
Clean.
MOT :d

Correcto! the only way it "might" is if you scallop the center out the back of the Speedlines cover, and flatten the dust cover over the nut once on, but i just never ran any on my GSi when i had Speedlines.

Is it not worth slapping it across a 12v battery and seeing if it spins? Its only a 10mm to remove to from the cradle...
if it isn't working after doing what mazz says, then try tapping it with a hammer, sometimes things stick & a sharp knock (and i don't mean baxtering it) might free it up..then at least you know its the pump...
Does the F/P relay click when cranking?

I was telling him this for most of last night as were others.
He couldnt be bothered....lol
If it was sounding like a swarm of angry bees before it died then its fubar. Im not sure what the huge discussion is about really? lol
Angry bees in components will kill anything in a car, fact. If you hear those *******s about something is about to fall off/fail. lol
Take the pump off and let the bees out, fixed :)
[edit] as a bonus, they might have left you some honey too!
Im not sure what the huge discussion is about really? lol
erm, its a car forum, what do you expect us to do?????
edit.. on second thoughts, don't answer the above question
Normally we chat **** for half a page, then the gay innuendo starts. Sometime less than half a page.
What pump setup you using? Intank?

Wasnt that i couldnt be bothered, im just having a massively shoite week, im getting grief at work and seriously considering quitting/walking out, and then that happened, it was dark and wet so rather than fudging anything up i packed up and left it, ill bridge a wire from the battery to the pump feed at the weekend, and was also considering tapping the pump to see if it had stuck!
Adam, its an external one, dont know what its from as i got it from the spares day last year for a fiver lol
Think ill just wait till payday and buy a new one (if its that) as i shouldnt have any bother with a new one, or at least have a guarantee:thumb:
See my comment in your thread, git!
