Nice to meet you both :thumb:
Can't wait to see this project completed took me ages to read through all these pages lol
Iain, was nice to meet you and Al and also Chris, starting to put faces to names which is good :thumb:
Nice to meet you too. Also impressed with the doors, hefty weight saving there!
At the risk of this thread turning into a big lovefest it was nice to meet you chaps as well. Glad you're happy with the dash, it will definitely stand out with the blue highlights but won't be too bright when driving with it being a matt flock. Get some more pics when it's in!

Its made from 316 grade 2mm stainless steel hopefully that should be a more fit for purpose.

Hi all a small update finally managed the final puzzle piece to the Ap bearing.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04043.jpg
Finally found a universal rotary seal to fit the odd sized hole, but still fit the input shaft diamter. Must give a big thanks to the fiiters at work at "made" this fit for me without any machining needed. :thumb:
Just need the unions to arrive and I pipe and refit the box hopefully for the last time.

Well it's update time again. Wwmnw and jedro popped round to join in the fun today. Now that the seal has been pressed in the rear of the bearing we got it fitted to the gearbox. We sealed the bearing to the spacer plate then the plate to the box just to make it oil tight. I had already drilled the hole for the bleed valve, so we shortened the bleed pipe to suit the fitment. Unfortunatly the feed line was offset from the original hole that suites the clutch fork so it was extended then the hole had a gromet glued to it. And I used the clip on the top of the box to hold the feed line. ( I have done it it two halfs so the box could be disconnected if needed). We also changed the arp flywheel bolts for new items the offered the box up. We checked the clearances and everything seems to be clear and the clutch rotates without any catching. We fixed the gearbox on and sat it on the mounts.
Also Andrew changed my fuel rail I bought a new one that has an6 fittings to finish the fuel lines.
Hopefully I can get a few more things moved on like fitting the SBD under drive alternator and the wiring loom among other things.
I took a couple of pic will upload later.
Cheers Gareth

Well i got a few more bits done this afternoon I think im gonna take some time off work to finish this on my deadline lol.
I started by fitting the three reservoirs for the pedal box.

http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04072.jpg
I bought a SBD little alt kit from a guy on another fourm aswell

Fitted it may take som jiggling
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04071.jpg
Finally i finished the breather for the fuel tank. I hid a filter behind the bumper
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04074.jpg
Then i piped it up to the tank with a non return valve
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04075.jpg
I know its not a huge update lol but ill get there soon lol.

Ok, can you tell me how its done then please? lol pm me if needs be ;) the reason, just that im looking to go to a hydraulic clutch and we use these slave cylinders at work so i will be able to get one cheapish through there for my application, id only looked at using the standard set up from a corsa before and id much rather use these as i know how good they are the jip they can handle without needing rebuilds.

21-01-12, 08:59 AM
Yeah no bother mate I'm writing on the iPhone so I'll do a proper explanation from the laptop later. Are you on a small block gearbox? If so you might wanna check the turret pcd as AP do a 76mm and a 74mm fitment, also what style clutch are you running cause there are various width housings and stroke lengths from AP.

21-01-12, 09:12 PM
Looks like progress mate! Doing a wicked job on it... bet you wish you had a quarter master twin plate now ;) Im glad i never got an ap after reading the sh*t youve had to do to make it work! Those alternators are a lovely bit of kit (2.2kg iirc) the one thats on my sh*t box has the small multi V pulley cause i had troubles with the single v turning its self over above 8k
Keep up the work... not long till Fast Show at pod! mines in bits for a couple of cheeky upgrades ;)
Did you ever get the rose joint setup? I asked but it never materialised!
Gareth_C
21-01-12, 09:57 PM

Well we had a fun day doing a few odds and sods. Started by making some hinges out of steel for the doors they will be made from aluminium when I get some plate. (Ill do a proper step by step guide when the ali hinges are done :thumb:).
Hinges fixed to the car. (work in progress)
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04119.jpg
I then started doing my rear strut brace. its been an after thought but ill paint it once its done.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04114.jpg
Check out the new mounts for the harnesses.
I also started to triangulate the rear brace to cage hopefully finish the other side next week.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04115.jpg
I will try and do more pics for next weekend and a more definative update.
Cheers for looking :thumb:
Gareth_C
30-01-12, 08:11 PM
Well I started my week off with a bang lol. I had the monday morning CBA attitude, but I managed to get started this afternoon.
I got the second triangulation for the rollcage/rear strut brace done.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04136.jpg
My shoddy welding :(
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04138.jpg
As I was in a rather calm mood for once  I decided to tackle my nemisis, the pedal box. I haven't been happy with how it sat it the footwell since I originally installed it, (So much for OBP quoting that its a direct replacement for the O.E gear). I got my noggin into gear and got stuck into it.
And came up with this.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04141.jpg
And it seemed to do the trick pedal box now sitting straight.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04139.jpg
I wasnt happy with the gap between the floor and the pedals so I had some 3mm aluminum bent to 1"x1", and finished like this.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04143.jpg
But with me being anal im not happy about the gap at the bottom of the ali.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04144.jpg
So I have ordered some 30mmx30mm ali angle to re do the cover then it will sit flush with the floor.
Hopefully I will have some more updates tomorrow, with everthing piped up and the wiring done ;)
Cheers for looking Gareth.

ok, well a decent explanation will help me along in doing mine i think, i am running a small block gearbox yes, you mean the turret as in the base mounting? i am running an AP competition post clutch and paddle unsprung clutch, i will have to measure the amount of movement and width i will need i think and consult the catalogue.

Right all a small update.
I have managed to pretty much finish the pedal box now just waiting for the bits to do the throttle cables. Hopefully they wil be here on sat.
First I ran the new rear brake line through the car. I wasn't happy using copper line as it just didnt look right.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04150.jpg
How it comes into the car
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04149.jpg
Then I finished off all the hoses to the master cylinders.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04153.jpg
My new piece of ali angle turned up today aswell so i re made the piece to cover the front.
Just painted
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04157.jpg
I did get it fitted and into the car but I forgot a pic ill stick that on tomorrow lol.
Im hoping to finish off the engine bay tomorrow. I.E paint the chassis leg where I did the calibra mount conversion mount and Im going to paint the gearbox but Im unsure what colour to paint it. Im undicided between black, blue or silver. As the hoses are blue the block is black and the box was orignailly silver. anybody wanna suggest which colour to go lol.
Cheers Gareth

Managed to do a bit today.
Firstly the pic as promised of the pedal box fitted im hoping the stuff arrives tomorrow to finish the throttle side then im laughing.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04158.jpg
I spent the best part of the day fitting a corsa rubber mount to the driver side. Ended up with this
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04159.jpg
I then painted the chassis leg where i made the mod for running the calibra gearbox mount
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04161.jpg
But with it being cold i found myself waiting more than working lol.
List of jobs for tomorrow:
I have to run a brake line from the rear t-piece to the braided line in the car.
Modify and fit the wiring harness.
Throttle cables.
Refit the thermostat.
Put some water in
And maybe hear it fire up??????

Why the Corsa and Calibra mounts?
Hi mate corsa front mount is 10mm wider so the engine is further from the chassis leg. Calibra mount cause it's a neater instal and makes it easy for engine changes.

Well I have manged to get a couple of the fiddly things done this weekend. but TBF i have neglegted it this weekend :(.
I couldnt seem to get the lights working for my fuel pumps without dragging the earths about so I re made the plate.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04214.jpg
Fitted with the switches in.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04221.jpg
Then I tackled the stack dash, I had an idea in my head how i wanted it to sit and luckly it seems to be how I wanted it.
I cut some carbon fibre the same size as the inside of the nova cowling.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04215.jpg
I trimmed the inside of the cowling so the cabon would sit flush, then notched the top so the clocks would be fine. once I cut the centre out the carbon, I bonded the clocks to the carbon then bonded it to the cowling and ended up with this.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04220.jpg
Then I fitted to to the dash to see what it looked like.
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04218.jpg
sits nicely in the centre
http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx256/gaffs2000/DSC04219.jpg
I have done other stuff but I keep forgetting the pics. im gonna do the wiring for the heated windscreen and the stack dash next eek after work then get panels sorted to have it to the painters very shortly.
Cheers Gareth
Those Elise dashes are ok but it doesn't cover the rpm you intend to use ??
Personally I'd just fit a separate tacho in there and run some separate gauges for oil pressure and water and oil temp.

Cheers for the input im sure ill find a way round it lol. ill probs just put a larger rev counter on aswell
Shame the LCD display is in the tacho, if it was the other way round you could of maybe squeezed a aftermarket tacho in the cluster.

Small update lol have finished mocking the door hinges up in aluminium they are bein tig'd this week. Welded up the fuel filler hose ready for paintin and am considering adding the strengthing kit to the engine bay and getting the bay re painted while my mate is painting the outside. But I haven't decided yet. New battery turned up so it's now on a dry cell race battery.
Oh yeah and I gave had a major self inflicted fcuk up. Managed to short the starter out on sat and start a little oil fire. Causing a problem with the ecu/ fuel system. Then Sunday set the rear brake lines on fire. Not a good weekend for the car lol

We fabricated the aluminuim hinges by getting some 4mm and some 5/8 (16mm) aluminium bar. I had the bar turned into barrels on the lathe at work 25mm in length with a 8mm hole in the middle. We then cut and filed the plate to match the contour of the door lines and drilled four 5mm holes in the hinge and through the door skin, then tapped the hinges to M6.using some M6x20mm button head stainless bolts, they were threaded through the hinge and the head was smeared with epoxy glue so they wont wind back out. the holes in the door skin were enlarged to 10mm so there is movement to adjust the door. we then copied the hole pattern on another piece of aluminium to go on the inside of the door. which we tigthened up using M6 washers and nyloc nuts.
Anybody needs pic see the post above thanks Gareth

I thought about something like that but I've used the existing barrel pins so the door should be removed via that method are we looking good on the powder coating lol
Going monday, they were still sat on their floor when he went over on friday ! doh Good for me as I wanted the Corsa ones in a different black but no good for you as more bloody delays, I'm told their going monday and will be back mid week so you may have a present for next weekend.
If you remove the pins you might find it changes where it sits which is why we did it the other way.

Gotta be so careful about the drain on a dry cell when not in use; I'm on my 3rd & just made a retaining bracket since it's not a standard size.
Those weld on turret tops are the most pointless things ever - the shell fails turret to body / legs not at the top.
Doors look excellent - I suppose polycarbs are the only way now. If I ran those I reckon i'ud be a good 40kg lighter :o
The Odyssey batteries are a huge improvement over the other brands IMO, mine has sat for a long time now and I just recently used it without any problems.

Evening all. Best thought Id give an update. I now have both doors hung and level sitting nice. all the strengthening kit is welded in im not happy with some of the welds so im gonna grind them back and sort it out. Im taking the windscreen back out and finish off the engine bay and hopefully on sat afternoon it will be going for its re colour. on the engine bay outside and boot floor ready for a busy year. Im hoping it will be back in a couple of weeks to put all the stuff back together ready for fun

Is that a must do I'm only asking because It doesnt look like hobbit has his done. So I wasn't sure if it was a must or preference.
P.s Im glad you pulled on it I just want it to be rigth as it first I've done
Yeh just welding the straight bar to the turret wont do anything. The triangulation is the bit thatll give the strength. If u imagine the forces at the turrets are trying to go up and back. The straight bar wont stop that movement, whereas if youve got a tie from the front leg coming up the turret bar it will stop any movement. If that makes sense?

Welding a straight bar to the turret WILL do something, in fact quite a lot more than it not being there at all, BUT not as well as one triangulated.

Just an update for anybody that noticed. On my 3rd run at pv on sat the main oil feed pressure line split while I was proceeding up the track at over 7500rpm, chucking oil everywhere.
I've stripped the sump off today and Found one set of knackered slipper rods & shells luckily that seems to be the only damage sustained so I think I've got off lightly. So I'll be getting the engine out to do the repairs and get stuff checked out aswell.
Sounds expensive Gareth but fair play for getting straight on fixing it
Gareth_C
11-06-12, 07:23 PM
Approx £500 mate but im glad there's no visable crank damage that would have been too much
Dissapointed to see it fail like that, tbh though the engine sounded flat as a pancake at not that high rpm, whats the rev limit set too and where was peak power ?
Gareth_C
11-06-12, 07:34 PM
The engine seemed to drive fine the limit is set at 8500 as set by steve And it made 232bhp on fri night
good to hear it's looking positive on the damage (if there is such a thing!) mate, keep us posted.

Thats one hell of a loss from the dyno figures isn't it !
What exhaust system is it on ? not knocking the build as we both know it has the right bits but when I was expecting it to sing it just sounded very flat, considering your times I'd say there is a underlying problem somewhere.
To be fair you did well to get it there, I'm quite sure with some tweaking the lost horses will reappear and the car will run good

When paul @ Rs tuning started it was only reading 197bhp, I dont think its too bad as the torque figure is 200ft lb (that reading is 100% accurate) we will see what its like when i rebuild it.
197 ! well something obviously went tits up since the dyno. As you say see how it goes once rebuilt.

i saw it spin up 1st, 2nd and quite a bit of 3rd on that run. such a shame after whats gone into this bud... keep at it. get what needs fixed done first. sort out the oil lines and worry about the rest later.

I really don't want to sound rude, but did you run all the new engine components in before even taking it on the rollers? Kid gloves, variable loads & speeds for the first 1000 miles then fresh oil & filter is in order, along with limited revs is best.
What was the oil pressure doing since the build? Where was the heat telling on the rods?
It shouldn't be spinning in 2nd let alone 3rd, even more so as your on a tall 1st and 2nd ?
How did you set the arms up in the end ?

The engine was built and ran in on an engine bed in Essex somewhere by steveboyslim mate, the oil pressure was at 75psi and I haven't had the full rods out but the heat Mark were on the caps.

It was run on a bench dyno at Joe Stevens prior to being fitted in the car, this is why I think something has gone tits up as it made something like 260hp there then 197 @ RS Tuning, knowing who mapped it initially I would be very surprised if the map was a issue and even if it was to lose over 60hp from a atmo engine is outrageous

As you say it was all very last minute for you but you certainly want to set those up for the next time out. On 2 of the runs I saw I'd say it wasn't wheel spinning after 1st as the gearing really does seems very tall, it wants a different cwp in there if your just using the one straight out of a F20

The sheet I got was 244bhp but I can't get it fixed how a 3" exhaust fitted to the type c as spec by SBD would lose so much power but the fact it did 200ft lb of torque didn't get me to concerned as I didn't want Tje build to end up pub figures

Yes I'm using the STD f20 final drive, again it was suggested that was the more practical way of doing it

You'll be able to tell by looking at the rod bearings if they've spun, which could mean the bolts weren't stretched correctly when being assembled or not run in enough before given the abuse; assuming the oil pressure never failed. Good luck with sorting it. If it's you rebuilding, once it's all back together take the time to turn it over to get the pressure up before firing it.

The pipe split on the main oil line so the top layer of the bearing is non existent really mate
I'm quite sure Giles had either a 2.5 or 2.75" Simpson system on his nigh on 270hp xe, 3" is turbo territory or maybe the much bigger 300+ engines.
Final drive is a tricky one but the best of the stock ones would be a F20 4x4 FD iirc but really you want to look towards something much closer which will keep the engine in the power all the time, I can't remember if Ollys ( Trackdaynova ) was on a 4:1 or 5:1 but that pulled a 12 sec pass and the gearing was sweet for trackwork.
New Quaife FD is a lot of money though so its something you want to make sure is fit for purpose.

There is a youtube video of the engine run on an engine dyno before it went in the car see http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?145354-My-XE-nova-on-throttle-bodies-(Project-275-bhp)/page62 post #619

Bearings can spin even if the rod bolts are correctly stretched.

If its 3" its too big. Something has clearly gone wrong since the dyno as even if the figures were slightly out ( which I doubt ) its lost nearly 60hp hasn't it ?
Just an update, I spoke to Craig from SBD this morning and the 3" exhaust they say is recommended for the xe using the type C manifold. He also said all the work that's needed is done by the manifold so the exhaust won't cause the issue. He also they tested type c on a engine dyno with a 3" exhaust fitted and then the manifold by itself and there was no power difference
Can't argue with that then, I am quite sure others don't use 3" systems though but if they work so be it.
All that said there must be a big problem somewhere on it to of lost that much power

He also said the power Los could be down to the fact of it being fitted into the car due to air restrictions etc but also maybe rs roller read lower Im not sure but with a torque figure Rhys 7ft lb up from the engine dyno session then tere must be something right in it. Issues will be fixed then I'll take it from there

How was the dyno calibrated for the run, any ideas? as if the torque is correct, but BHP massively down it points towards the RPM calibration being out, unless it's seeing a large enough air restriction to strangle the flow for top end, but that's fairly unlikely.

Tbh I'm not sure how the rollers were done the torque was done by the injector cycle. There shouldn't be any restriction the bulkhead is bit is cut out and the bonnet was completly off.
The only possible restriction is the air filter but its massive
Is there a pic of your bay with filter etc in here somewhere? I've not seen one but I tend to be a bit erratic on here the last year, I'll trawl through if there is one lol Main tell tale on your dyno printout is if the redline is a bit early, it's probably been calibrated a bit out.
Power = Torque x RPM, so if it thinks you're revving a bit slower than you are, the torque will be spot on, but it will calc your power a bit down on what it actually is.

Pics of filter sorry if there a bit crap ive just braved the garage to take them.

Also I must say a HUGE thanks to Dave at PEC (performance engine components) i phoned him and told him what id done over the weekend and he gave me a really good discount on another set of rods, its nice to see some companys will still help you when your luck is ****.
So these came in the post

lol mate im trying to see the guy i bought the hose off for more, better hose for free lol
Shouldn't have too much issue with your filter setup, used by plenty of people. It may well be pulling a lot of hot air straight off the exhaust though, that will definitely drop the power a surprising amount.
On the power graph, any idea where your usual redline is? it doesn't seem quite as much as 20-30% out though tbh.

The redline was originally set at 8500rpm and I don't think it was changed

Looks like it is calibrated 500RPM short then, you can add about 6% for free lol Call it 246 :p
