well after breaking my corsa turbo my brother decided to buy the engine off me and put it into a nova!

the search was on

it had to be clean, mrk1 , good shell, and for the right money

i had a test from kev bradford saying he had a 12k mile nova a price ws agreed and a date set for collection! :)

a long drive up from south wales to north wales and i was now the owener of a very very clean 12k mrk 1 nova i couldnt believe how clean it actually was :wtf: but it is genuine never been painted full service history up to 2006 when kev tyook it off road last service was 11k miles

it had done 15miles in 2-3 years i had it doing 154, suprisingly it broke down nothing major just fuel pipe perrished, rac man came out and replaced the hose from the tank to the fuel lines, and away we went, rear brakes decided radaomly to come onlol

but we got home and now the project can begin

plans are

similar to keith robinsons build, gsi replica, high spec c20let f28, alot of silcone, omex 600 hopefully be done before x mas

Great base for a project. My only advice is to take your time and do it right, would be a shame to bodge such a good shell.

Looking forward to seeing the results!!

indeed i paid a good price and i couldnt refuse what is imo one of the best in the uk!

now its time to make it into something special, im thinking mistral grey, with cesaro alloys

now its time to get cracking :)

Ash
20-09-08, 08:44 PM
If you want suggestions, how about VW/Audi dolphin grey or a satin grey, I've always wanted to paint a nova satin grey, but doubt I'll get round to it.

Going to ruin a mint low mile mk1 nova what a shame......

Imo people should get old shi*ters, weld them and then put xe's in.

what a stupid comment, why on earth would you want to find a shell that needs plats welded here there and everywere then put a 200bhp engine in itlol

this way is the best , not a single bit of structural rot, the shell will last the next 10years easily try saying that about many nova' on the uk roads!

LEWI007
20-09-08, 10:20 PM
Because these days its so rare to find one in this condition with this many miles and to pull it apart and start making modifications to a minter is just stupid...IMO ok..IMO !

Propably go spinning around in it and write it off anyway :(

OMG - what are you on about.

If you want to build a track/rally/sprint etc car you look for the best/strongest shell you can find with least rot!

OK, so it will no longer be a 1L Pushrod Merit!? So what?? What would YOU do wityh it? Park it in a garage for 11 months a year and tell everyone you have a MINT 1L Nova?

sweet!

Ernie

21-09-08, 09:10 AM
Sounds a little sad but, it's such a shame to do this to such an original car. Unless you go Keiths route, and get it dipped, I'd enjoy it for a few months and them see what I'd what to do you with it, it's MINT but hey good luck either road, plus it' your car too

SRimon
21-09-08, 09:54 AM
Think its needs something more special than mistral grey.

Nice shell, seems a lot of nordic blue ones keep good nick, mine was nordic blue and in spot on condition even with 60k on it.

Awesome find mate! Looks brand new :D

Yeah, K reg Nova, no-one wants a 1ltr Nova, fcuk that, no point in having a boggo std push rod lol Best/strongest/cleanest shell then whack a decent motor in it as he plans too :thumb:

why would it need to be dipped, it can be taken back to bear metal if needs be at the bodyshop, from what keith has said to me they are very rough with the cars they get in some even need jigging afterwards

why is it a shame, its a std 1.0, a car is to use, and it will get used! it will get an Let it will get welded it will get painted and it will be used alot once finished!

i have no desire to keep it in the garage and say hey boys i have a 1.0 nova with only 12k miles on it, it is desperatly slow, handling is terrible why on earth would you want to keep it standard!

seeing how much fun my brother and will foy an many other people have from there nova's has made me get another one for myself :)
thanks all for your positive comments

I agree, yeah fair enough in saying "i cant believe it its original bla bla bla" if it was a gte/gsi/Sr but its a base model.Too many people have too much to say on what people do to their cars on here ive noticed alot just lately.Hes building it for himself to enjoy himself, hes paid his money for it so therefore entitled to do whatever he wants to it.Concentrate on your own builds

corsakid
21-09-08, 04:38 PM
had the painter round today he couldnt believe his eyes, after painting will's and my brothers he had seen enough of nova's, but he was very happy with it he said "it needs very very minimal dent repairs, no welding" it is being painte in 2 weeks

i best get stripping!

i trial fitted my new radiator and charge cooler radiators all fitted very well so thats another thing to tick off the list

been making a list and a long one at that for what i need to order from chris astley!

Nice plans for it mate, again, you'd be an idiot if you ripped apart a low mileage sr/gte/gsi for an LET but not a 1.0, your doing it a huge favour big ridding it of its 45bhp! lol

Any idea on colour, bodystyling etc?

I'd rather see it left as it is but it's not my car.

no doubt it will struggle to put down 300bhp let alone any more!

as for power figures not really shore it will be built for reliability and what ever t makes at 25psi is what it makes :P

thankyou, i love gsi's also having had 2 previously, if it had been aa mrk 2 nova then it wouldve been gsi rep but i do like the older look of the mrk 1 and you dont see many gte's about now. i was planning on having the car painted but i really like how the wheels look against the paint! i will fit a new tailgate a proper mrk 1 item with no boot lock handle etc i have some manta mirrors to go on, but its almost as i want now its just the mechanicals that need sorting :thumb:

did a little bit more mincing on the nova today

started by finishing off the alternator recess

went from this

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/DSC00413.jpg

then used the bit that we had cut out

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/DSC00414.jpg

tacked in so recess is formed

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/DSC00415.jpg

then weld it

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/DSC00416.jpg

then clean things up as plate was to large and protruded out form chassis leg nothing a bit of sanding couldnt fix

well bit of a slow day today

we seam sealered the the welded seams etc to day at 9.am this moring was supposed to go roud to be painted this after noon but i think due to the fact it was so cold the seam sealer was only just starting to set at 5pm this evening so will have to be tommorw or monday for paint now

everything was masked off whilst rubbing down and priming the rack is loose and will be removed for paining when at body shop

its me kristan than usually posts up the progress (its pretty much a joint effort maybe more so on my part as my brother is relatively new to all this and is an electrician by trade and i am a mechanic etc but it is his car and his ideas for the build i just help it happen sooner rather than later lol) i user my user as garys (my twin brothers) internet isnt working at present thats the reason for thw 2 wip threads on the same user sorry for the confusion glad you like though olly :thumb:

yeah benn the seams have all be welded and the full strengthening plates added, didnt feel the need to seam sealer inside the wheel arches painting is more than enough in my opinion:thumb:

Nice build so far. One concern, is the F28 mount welded to the chassis plate or the chassis leg? Wouldn't want that to tear off with the plate!

corsakid
08-11-08, 06:50 PM
its half welded on the the leg itself and half on to the plate!

i am confident the plate will not come off it has been welded heavily, considering the std mount had 4 spot welds i dont think it will come off in a hurry

might be worth welding in a brace across that rear mount mate as they tend to flex, especially the power you'll be running. The GTE/GSi had them as standard.

imo the plating kit does not fit very well, the mounts needed some work to get the bolts supplied to fit. the quality is good though apart from that

Solid mounts always seam to be a bitch to fit, put the engine in twist or to far forward! but if your prepared for this then you don't mind, and it's worth it in the end, as us that use them know.

????????:wtf:

what do you know

I was not saying yours will be like this...BUT

I know that when i fitted the solid mounts on my old nova that it brought the engine forward toward the radiator to point ti touched, and it sat high on the chassis leg mount (left as looking in bay) and touched on the underside of my bonnet, i know others have experienced similar things too.

I had to make a spacer to lower my mount on the old one, as i didn't want to move/re weld the original mounting point.

you might find that wen you go to bolt up the rear mount you don't have access to one of te bolts. I welded my plate the same as you and hd to file it out a little -

corsakid
12-11-08, 03:08 PM
i dont know what you mean i have bolted the mount o the bidy already all i have to do is oput the bolt through the mount isnt going to be a problem as we did the same on my the silver nova

Loving the two cars in this thread confused me a little at first but very inspiring keep up the good work

The Simps
12-11-08, 03:43 PM
yeah, depends on your method of bolting it on. Like you I bolt the rubber mount to the car then put the single bolt thru the mount. You should also tho be able to access both the bolts on the rubber mount with the bracket in place. Not a major biggy, just that I done the same and decided to file mineout a little to give me the flexibility.

How's today gone? I take it you're back at work now tho?

corsakid

today was ok ish managed todo an hour or so , made some plates to strengthen the lower arms amd welded them in painted and refitted, back in work now so only pop to my mates unit after i ve finihsed work.

ordered some powerflex polybushes for the nova they should be here friday ready for the weekend.

on the weekend it will be tank in, fuel lines in, pump in hopefully if i can find a fitting for the inlet of my bosch 044 pump.

need to get the tie bars bought from chris, a clutch, maybe a lightened flywheel not 100% yet on that!

its all money money money , and i ve already blown my budget i originally set out for the build

Plug
14-11-08, 12:17 PM
You may have blown your budget but its goin to be a very nice nova.
Spending a bit extra will be worth the smile you will get looking and driving it. Knowing you've done it all yourself.

Looking very nice, the manifold looks very nicley made !! just a couple of questions, why didnt you strip the bay fully before you painted it ? i.e the rack and pipe stubs and tie bar etc.. also are you making the top part of the front panel removable as i see you have cut it out, it'll make putting the engine in alot easier.

corsakid
27-11-08, 05:59 AM
i left the rack and tie bars on as i had to push it round to the bodyshop and without them on it would have been chaos.

as for the wiring i removed it up untill the bulk head whihc is fine, i only wanted the bay painted where i had welded and sealed up, nothiong got over spray on it or got painted blue so :thumb:

front panel is removable yes this was done to gain access to the turbo manifold alot easier and to aid fitting

Cant really see the point in doing this tbh? The car's paint is like it rolled from the factory!!
Only worth doing if you go a different colour.

As for the removable slam panel - its the done thing with LETs, give much easier access to the important stuff.
