My bro's Cav passed MOT the other day with HID kit fitted. Tester said nothing only how nice and white/bright they were.

Surprised at that, as the HIDs I had on mine were shocking. Yet in the Celica they work perfectly

Nope. Those requirements come from EU regulations which came into force sometime in the early-mid 2000's. The MOT merely states if auto levellers and headlight washers are present, they must work (not that they must be present). HIDs are just mentioned as an aid to finding auto levellers and washers.

Read all of this thread now, Ive run HID's on the last 5 or so cars ive had. Normally i have found that the beam pattern is not really affected. All you are really doing is changing a bulb for a brighter one. Its in the same place so why should it be affected? If the beam pattern is drastically affected though; it is possible to set it up correctly at an MOT station.

When i bought my 2nd (current) Nova, the beam pattern was terrible. However, an hour or so later with my friendly MOT inspector, this is how we got the beams of light:

    (Phone Qualitly Pic sorry)

Anyway, he says this would pass MOT perfectly now. I never get flashed or called abusive names for having brilliant lights =]

^ That looks pretty good to the other Nova examples I've seen. They do need fettling to get right.

Its not though; the light source for a HID is often in a different place to the light source for a halogen, which can muck up the light distribution in the lamp/lens and resultant beam pattern. Also, I've found with H4s, the shields don't reflect the light very well and it spills into the main beam part of the lens.

I have made improvements on my cav by using the pre-facelift lamp housing which had a builtin bulb shield that stops some of the light going straight outwards though.

[edit] At home now so can see the pic you posted Looks MUCH better from other pics I've seen (most of which are just blobs of light ) but there's still a lot of light splash and artifacts. What did you do to get the pattern that way?
