I seem to have gained an obsession with yellow! lol (went so far i bought a yellow car)

Slight bit done to the car, nothing major, just got it up on axle stands and drained the sump out ready for the gasket removal/re-fit etc.

Was hoping to get away with leaving the exhaust manifold on, but i don't think i can, dam it..lol

I'll do it over the week after work.

Its much easier with the manifold off. Much, much.

Is your car kept outside scott?

scott.parker
16-08-09, 08:49 PM
All 3 are mate, i don't have a choice, i still live at home with the olds, and my dads got the garage full of stuff, been trying to get him to agree to making a car port on the side the hose, think he's coming round to the idea.
(were both carpenters so we'll do it)

scott.parker
17-08-09, 09:42 PM
So...

Looks like i was slightly lucky then i normally would be!

The Exhaust manifold came off with quite relative easy, (and i removed it with the rad on JUST! lol) only had one stud give me some gyp, it moved slightly, so i got some WD40 on it, and on some others just for good measure etc.

So manifold off i then got on and took the sump off, and gave it a clean out, put the bolts in some panel wipe to soak/clean over night, i got to the point to ware i need to remove the pick/baffle plate and it got dark, so pack up for the night, I'll need to read on how to do the rest as i have never done this before! lol

Pics.

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/846/dscf0215small.jpg

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/7815/dscf0217small.jpg

Taking this to work tomorrow, as a guy i work with is going to modify it so the system don't hang so low, it's due to the flange not being horizontal etc.

http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/1179/dscf0218small.jpg

See how it's clearly soaked through in oil!

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/231/dscf0221small.jpg

And now it's off it's blatant it's gone, the other on the top's the same.

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/1336/dscf0224small.jpg

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4462/dscf0230small.jpg

Now i take it i have to fully remove the pick up point pipe?
If so I'll need to replace a seal no/yes?

http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/9693/dscf0229small.jpg

Scott

Dar
17-08-09, 09:43 PM
It's just two bolts with an o-ring. No need to replace the o ring if its ok.

scott.parker
17-08-09, 09:46 PM
Yeah i could feel, and just about see the bolt's as it's almost dark in the pic lol

Cool if it's just and O ring and i can get away with reusing then thats all the better, cheers dude.

Lee H
17-08-09, 09:50 PM
I'd never reuse it to be honest, they are pence to replace and if its not right (most will be brittle unless its been fitted recently) you will have a major lack of oil pressure and have to take it all apart again.

djbrowney
17-08-09, 10:53 PM
why no just buy a bonded gasket for the price and the **** ache it save putting the other on lol

scott.parker
17-08-09, 11:00 PM
How do you mean mate?

Dar
17-08-09, 11:03 PM
Get the sump baffle with the gaskets already bonded to it. I use it on mine and it makes life sooo much easier. Can't find the part no for it though.

scott.parker
17-08-09, 11:11 PM
I have found on ebay a rubber gasket that goes over the baffle, or you buy a new baffle with one on it already, there £30

djbrowney

same as this but just go into your local motor factors an buy one for a 2.0 8v lol

scott.parker
17-08-09, 11:20 PM
Take it the 8v is the same, but just cheaper yeah?

djbrowney
17-08-09, 11:22 PM
it is an 8v gasket mate they just list it as an uprated one for the xe which is utter ****ing bollocks lol lol

scott.parker
18-08-09, 09:08 PM
Well after taking they advise of djbrowney and Dar i decided to pop to sure parts after work tonight, and i got my self a baffle with gasket, oil filter, some sealer, and lock tight.

Got the old one off

http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/3998/dscf0231small.jpg

No between pics, as it's a ball ache to do this anyway lol

So i put sealer on the pickup pipe/and plate ware it attches to the pump (the O ring was fine, but applied sealer too) and attached it.
Then sealed the bottom end, then placed the baffle/gasket into place, and put the sump up and slowly added the bolts with thread lock on.

http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/9246/dscf0234small.jpg

Then took the old filter off and drained the cooler.

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/8133/dscf0237small.jpg

Job Done! i hope, I'll find out tomorrow when i replace the filter and put new oil in.
Then I'll fit my manifold back on and try it, FINGERS will be crossed lol

Scott

Benn
18-08-09, 09:39 PM
So you're using the 8v/ectec gasket with baffle in? You know the bolts will need to be shorter yes? As there's less in the "sandwich"

scott.parker
18-08-09, 09:46 PM
Well lets hope not, as the rubber gasket is allot thicker then the two cork ones i had bought to fit, and it's on now!

Benn
18-08-09, 09:54 PM
No, it is smaller. If you by the vauxhall item they give you shorter bolts.
You might need to pop then out and put washers on. Think I used m6x20 on might and 3still leaked a lil.

scott.parker
18-08-09, 09:59 PM
Oh balls...........

Best go get some washers! lol

Benn
18-08-09, 10:04 PM
Just do it one at a time..lol

Lee H
18-08-09, 10:34 PM
You don't need sealer with a rubber gasket either.

Benn
18-08-09, 10:36 PM
Thought you where ment to over the oil pump end join and crack ends join? Thats what i was told.. And did.

Lee H
18-08-09, 10:39 PM
Thought you where ment to over the oil pump end join and crack ends join? Thats what i was told.. And did.

Yeah a little bit there but definitely not all the way round.

scott.parker
18-08-09, 11:19 PM
Well if you lot are so good at it why didn't you tell me before hand!

**** it it's done now lol

Benn
19-08-09, 08:19 AM
You didnt tell me you where fitting one....

scott.parker
25-08-09, 12:17 AM
Right quick update on the goings on, bought some shorter bolts, and some washers, but then though hang on....

So i checked the depth of how far the thread of the bolt is going into the bottom end, and it's got MORE room in the hole then the bolts is long!

So there OK, i checked it on 6 (from both side's) one was close, so i dug out some crap from inside, so either the baffle/gasket is thicker then the ones you used Benn, or your bottom ends got loads of old thread lock stuffed in the sump bolt holes??

More updates soon, as i have fitted everything back together now.

Scott

scott.parker
09-09-09, 05:48 PM
So just before combe i had to re-do the sump (due to a blockage)
Then for peace of mind i used the 20mm bolts, but with washers, so now the pump should stay good, as i also used lock tight.

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/4628/picturesmall.jpg

Also had to replace the temp gage sender unit by the stat housing (at 6am on the morning of combe)
And the night before i sorted my faulty wiper motor out.

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/5281/dscf0262small.jpg

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/7563/dscf0264small.jpg

Quick wire brushing, and clean out etc, slap some sealer on the lip, put back together, then more sealer round it. done!

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/2582/dscf0265small.jpg

So all done, off i set to combe, got there fine, then pulled up in the lanes to go on track (although i couldn't as marshals didn't notice i had no sound check sticker) The Clutch cable snapped! lol
Not my day...

Then i went to Shake spear race way on the Sunday 6/9/09

Got 5 runs in and hit a new PB of 13.5 @ 105 mph

Got vid of it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEnEyjv3z7o

and as i went up to do my last run i noticed the car was stuttering/misfiring etc, running on 3 cylinders, i think it's blocked/faulty injector on no2 as i unplugged it and the engine speed did not alter, so after a quick look on SBD site i need to spend £140 for new injectors/plugs/leads this should help make it bit better, then im looking to buy a cam and get the car mapped.

Scott

Adam
09-09-09, 06:39 PM
Scott, it might be something simple like a ht lead on that cylinder, worth checking before spending ££££ on new injectors or whatever.
Change the plugs too

Ad, yeah checked the plugs/HT's etc, and then took the injector plug off on each cylinder, so have a good hunch it's on no2 and it's the injector.

Benn, would do that, but as i need some better plugs/HT's and the injectors are as far as i know the one's i got on/with the engine from way back when it came from the mk2 Astra, so they could be 20 years old as the Astra was a 89!
Jut though may as well buy some new SBD stuff thats slightly uprated better for the job etc.

scott.parker
14-09-09, 07:56 PM
Adam, i got mine from a local auto parts supplier (sure parts) over the counter along with filter as well.

As for bolts im using m6x20mm with a washer so theres about 18mm going into the bottom of the block, but used the original two that bolt right through near the oil pump.

Any way!

Good news.......

My cars A OK lol

For some reason i decided to go give it a look over tonight when i got home from work, and i started poking about and then noticed what was wrong as to why the car was running like it was on 3 cylinders etc)

So it's not a dodgy plug/lead/or injector, was something really simple and so so silly!

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/4636/picture166small.jpg

The little spring clip that holds the throttle butterfly's all at the same amount, the one in the center of the pic, it had some how come from how it's sat now and was sat with the bottom part of the clip on the arm of the butterfly, so cylinders 1 & 2 was open about 3-4mm and others were set correct, so it was not idling right, and was trying to draw more air into 1 - 2 under acceleration!.
So i manged to just open it and place it back into the right place (as it is now) i have no idea how it got like it, but it's now running fine!
OK it was a silly thing, but dam im happy! lol

So after a slight wait i got this in the post last week.

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/8117/picture184small.jpg

Question is (Will you could tell me) where do i mount the jets?

Both in the bay? if so near fuel rail etc?
or should i add another and then put one in cabin, one near fuel rail, one under the car near the tank?

But im thinking if i add another jet theres less content focused in one area, so less effective spread to three points etc.

Scott

Mike
01-10-09, 07:49 PM
Both in the bay matey. Only need them in the cabin if a) your going rallying b) you have a fuel cell.

Mount one jet at either end of your strut brace facing the fuel rail area. When you come to mount the actual extinguisher, situ it infront of the pass seat but directly under the front it so to speak, the area where the seat rail slider handle would be on a OE seats.

EDIT: Will check my photobucket for pics of some of my old cars for ya..

I'd have one aiming at the fuel rail after seeing flys fire...

Yeah Mike/Benn was thinking both in bay by fuel rail, though i cant mount the main extinguisher by passengers seat (well maybe behind it) as in front already have a hand held one.
Was going to use the two straps and then jubilee the holder to the strut bar of the cage, like Will F has his.

If a fire reaches the cabin area, you really do not want to be in there. At all no no. The fire aint the problem. Its the melting plastic & aluminium that is.

So....... After i had been to Combe/Shakespeare race way back in September i noticed the car had developed a misfire, so i asked on here for advise SEE HERE (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=131937)
And the answer that came back the most was coil pack, so off to ebay i went, bought a 1.8-2.0 XEV one for £10, fitted it today, and sorted..

Here's the old one, it was an SBD one, same as sold on there site.

And here is the XEV one fitted (the back part, two lumps) think it's magnets? is slightly smaller then the SBD type..

Had today off so use it to get some things done on the Nova.

first up was F/G Boot, it need the 4mm plexi glass cutting then fitting into the rubber seal

So...

Got the plexi glass out, placed it onto the ground, placed the boot on top of it, and marked the opening in the corners/top bottom
then removed it and place masking tape over it thats wide enough to take the base plate of a Jigsaw, then dropped the boot back on top, marked the opening so it's exactly in-line as you look through the opening.

You then need to add on roughly 6-7mm, so mark this around the first line, as the window sits in the rubber/on over the opening you see.

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/3225/picture265l.jpg

http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/6729/picture267v.jpg

http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/3127/picture266.jpg

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/7189/picture268.jpg

Put the P'glass Perspex in the rubber seal, then place it upside down on a table etc, place the F/G boot on top of it, then using something like a tea-spoon handle (as me and my dad did) you will need two of you to do this, press the boot down onto the glass seal while prising the rubber up and over the lip with the end of the tea-spoon handle (using some water/grease is optional to help it over) i opted for spit! lol

Took us about 10 mins to place it in, might take it out to paint the boot, but no fussed right now..

http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/2517/picture269f.jpg

http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/9086/picture270y.jpg

Then found my locking type bonnet/boot catches out, just checked to see if they would fit/work, should do with some fettling etc.

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3290/picture272m.jpg

http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/2613/picture273.jpg

Weighed in at 7.8 Kgs without the locks, so 8.0Kgs when finished i think.

Also today after doing the boot i though just before it gets dark I'll sort something thats been bugging me for a while now.

The dash lights have been only working on the top right by the rev counter, and no ware els! So driving at nights fun, as i had no idea what speed i was doing (although the gages read out)

So i could of replaced them with white normal one's, or white LED's, but i went for some bright Blues to bring it chaving upto date! :p

The second hand coil pack solved that a treat mate, i can now have it at 40mph in 5th and place my foot and she picks up quickly.

The new plugs/leads combo has made a difference, as i can accelerate allot faster upto speed.

Just been for a hr or two's blast in it, happened to meet a Scooby's on a "private" road, he was in front, but not for long, and as he "followed" me low and behold but only another should come join in, and he also ended up behind me and the other one lol

Best look back on my wip for how i fitted them, or use trackday novas wip, and others like Iain's, as they have done them too, but just use the normal mounts to get the passion of to drill through the bumper.

Ive got Proxes on the front, and have Rainsports on the back. The rainsports are near there wear limit though so will be getting changed before Oulton.

But because ive got fook all clearance on the rear im going to have to spend out more on 195/45s instead of 195/50's
Will probably just get another pair of Kumho KU31s on the rear.

So i opened the bonnet tonight to do some work to the car, and what was i greeted with??...

First off, some engine coolant has been leaking slowly from the rad, so new one of them i think soon..

But the most horrifying thing was i noticed the engine looked to be sitting on the piss, very low on one side, after investigating more i found that the offside engine mount bolt that goes through the rubber to the engine bracket had rattled the nut loose, almost to the point it was about to come off..

OK so the engine cloud not drop, as the bolt could not come out, but it meant the engine has been moving about the last few times Ive drove it (maybe even at Oulton park?)
So a bit off faffing about and Ive sorted it, with two jacks, a bit of wood, and some lock tight! lol

A proper update soon...

So i got the lambda port section and after talking to my mate at work we decided the best option was to not put the section in but just chop and fit the port into the manifold down pipe.

Before.

After.

http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/3976/picture713small.jpg

Fitted into manifold.

http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/3847/picture716small.jpg

Next steps, paint it all, heat wrap it, then get the system and all on car, and modify and fit center section with new box.

Totally off the exhaust topic, i had my Cesaro's refurbished a few months back, but could not decide what to do with them (still haven't lol)

http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/5189/photo0381small.jpg

And NO it's not Jamaica yellow, although it's very close!

lol lol

Ive bought some Opel blitz center badges, so im thinking on the track car with track tires? or street tires??

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/9266/photo0383small.jpg

Should tie in well with my future plans for my theme.

The car's left in the air till i fit new system on it.

Right so I'll start with some of my recent purchases first, i ordered these of ebay last night, and they got here today! how dam good is that! Im amazed in fact...

http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/1769/picture742small.jpg

Tested them on my exhaust, the 2.1/4" ones are spot on, got 6@ ' 2.1/4
2@ 2", 2@1.75" all for £10 p&p of ebay from JBI motorsport.

And then i got some exhaust heat wrap, was meant to receive 1 roll @ 10 meters long with 10 s/s ties, i got 2 set's, i didn't order two, i only paid £10 for the one order! lol Heat wrap anyone??

http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/4034/picture743small.jpg

Found a friend! thats a ear plug for size reference!

http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/5664/picture717small.jpg
http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/739/picture718small.jpg

So anyway, i got my Ashly system out tonight and checked it all with the new claps, and started prepping it and the manifold for some heat resistant paint, although im covering the manifold in wrap i though i best clean it up (any surface grot) and give it a lick to keep it protected under the wrap.

http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/6280/picture721small.jpg
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/3073/picture722small.jpg

This is where i plan to take the "kink" out and replace it with this S/S 4" round box i got. Hope it will flow better and drop the noise a bit too.

http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/9493/picture726small.jpg

Then onto cleaning the manifold with a few wire wheel attachments etc.

scott.parker

Chris it was from a place on ebay called XPS (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220592795659&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT)

James, the wire used on the lambda port was stainless, as will be the wire on the new box to go into the system, but any other parts will be mild.

Quick before pic when it was laid out in the garage..

So my mate from work Rich (who use to be apprentice under me 5 years ago, now shows me the ropes at my new job at his place lol) He has a MK1 Escort and is building a MK2 Escort with his dad, he came over with his welder, as i cant weld like he can, and we got fitting..

First off we put it on the car, then marked for the center "kink" to be cut out and new box to be added, then chopped and tacked it in place, then offered up under the car again before seaming it.

Well after the drive home from PV the car sat on the drive at my parents house and was not used until this weekend just gone 18/9/10 where i drove to Bromsgrove to meet Brakersnova to give him some rear springs, and on first turn it fired up, though ran very lumpy and had a sticky tappet again for the first 10 mins or so..Although it drove fine, and is as fast as it alway has been.

Things i need to do IF it's staying, i need to sort the fuel tank for the one Baxter gave me at billing, put a new rad on it, new slimline fan, not sure whether or not to go one front one rear, push and pull etc..

New oil cooler pipes, but need to figure out how to attach them to the sandwich plate end first??

Then IF i keep it the long term plan is to have some slight head work done etc.

Any ideas or help on oil cooler pipes to connect to the GM sandwich plate would be of great help.

Keep it. You know it makes sense! Really like the look of your car.

Oil cooler pipes, surely you can just take the old ones in, measure them up and get the correct unions? I shall be doing this for mine eventually.

scott.parker
20-09-10, 09:59 PM
Could do, lol or just find some GM/ Vaux pattern one's just the ones on the car are leaking like fook from the joint between where the solid pipe comes from the sand wedge plate/filter to the rubber piping, it then runs down the tie bar and onto my wheel.. Not god for my brakes really..

Oh also need to get my steering rack looked at, maybe fit the quick rack Ive had for about a year?

re the pipes Scott, as said get a local hydraulics supplier to makes some up.

Just be warned, my local place have a habit of over-speccing any pipes I ask for & give me stuff you can barely bend, suitable for 100,000psi type stuff. I binned £90 quids worth as it was no use to me.

I ended up getting new unions from them & using oil cooler piping I sourced from Speedflow (probably MOCAL stuff) & mated it up with jubilee clips. That was for my relocated filter so its the same deal really.

Try www.speedflow.co.uk/ (http://www.speedflow.co.uk/) for any stuff, though I doubt they will know thread sizes etc if you want the unions. But if you know what you need they are great.

So.......

While over at my olds today i cleaned the mk1 and generally had a mince about etc..

I started the track car up (first crack as always, love dry cells!)
Let it run and made sure there was no leaks etc..

Then while looking it over i noticed some stupid pikey who knows nothing about breaking into novas has had a go!

Looks as if they seen the door gap, noticed the lock and thought they could prise it down like so..

(this is slightly open so you can see the latch etc..)
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/2480/photo0335v.jpg

Guess they were trying to press the latch part sticking out here..

http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/6190/photo0334z.jpg

As they caused slight damage to paint work where a screwdriver type tool has been pushed down the door aperture etc..

http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/9397/photo0332h.jpg

So after seeing this i promptly decided to place it under a cover to keep prying eyes off..

Need to do loads to it, just got no cash!

Well after some **** had fiddled with my door i decided to take the steering wheel off the car, BUT then realised this was not really a good long term solution so i searched on ebay and found a nice slim 25mm / 1" inch snap off boss to wheel kit..

I thought at £39.97 it cant be a waste etc.

So it arrived today an I'm pleased to say its looking good so far, but only time will tell once i use the car with it on etc, so heres some pics.

Front on view where wheel attaches.

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/849/photo0386v.jpg

Rear view, this face goes against the wheel boss..

http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/5011/photo0381r.jpg

Once you bolt it to the wheel and press the button in your left with this part to bolt to the boss.

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/2748/photo0382a.jpg

Like so.. This now shows both parts bolted to boss and wheel..

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/5903/photo0380p.jpg

Re aligned them up and turn the black center collar to the right and the lock mechanism slides into place and its now firmly attached!

http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/9669/photo0377n.jpg

http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/3917/photo0378z.jpg

As you can see 25mm is nothing compared to some Ive seen that are over 2.5 inches increase toward the driver!

So...

After a bit of info digging Ive replaced the oil with some nice and not so cheep fluids.. Mobil 1 motorsport oil 15w50 along with a nice new champion filter.

The old filter was a cont to get off, not sure why! but finally got it off, i left the sump plug and filter out/off over night to drain it all out.

Finlay found the main reason Ive had an oil leak from, it's leaking slowly from the cooler union joints, and very slightly from one of the pipes where it goes from the metal crimped end into the rubber pipe, so next on the list will be a remote filter/braided pipe setup..

So while the bumper was off i decided to fit my splitter of my Astra, i didn't want it to sit flush and blend into the GSi bumper, so set it back slightly, giving a nice flair on the corners, i quite like it..

Ordered some Eaton synflex piping for my extinguisher system, should get that sorted midweek..

Anyway a few pics i took today.
