Pretty light mate yes, I'll think of something;)

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/8/dscf0284small.jpg
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/818/dscf0285small.jpg
Then i moved onto striping out most of the stuff from the car as i wanted to clean it out read to start painting the floor etc.
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/6535/dscf0287small.jpg
Oh i did some test patches for the color match on the paint!

So i got a few more bit done today.
First off some masking out!
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/6033/dscf0302small.jpg
Then some of this, want to try get a durable finish on the front foot wells.
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/7071/dscf0303small.jpg
Passengers side first.
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/3095/dscf0304small.jpg
Nice even coat, and on to the drivers side.
Drivers side masked and prepped.
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/1613/dscf0306small.jpg
Nice thick even coating again.
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9550/dscf0309small.jpg
another pic of pass side almost fully dry here.
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/8273/dscf0310small.jpg
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/5051/dscf0313small.jpg
Give them a second coating tomo.
Then i started toying with the idea of my old custom fill cap off my GSi
Huummmmmm:confused:

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/6152/dscf0312small.jpg
Or this one?

Well another day passes and bit more work done to the car.
Yes i here you all cry more work done! lol
I know it's amazing it sat for months and months and now Ive been working on it most days for the last two weeks..
So today's update goes as so.
Second thick coating of stone Gard in the foot wells.
Passengers first.
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8380/dscf0317small.jpg
Then the drives side got an extra thick coating! Don't want it waring through..
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/6489/dscf0316small.jpg
So as these sat drying i thought about getting the car up onto axle stand as i needed to start cleaning up/filling all the holes i had welled up..
I started jacking the car up, then realised my jack was not really upto the job, as i wanted to get it quite high (crap draper one's not stable at all) to put on the stands so off to helfords, bought a new one that lifts to 390mm :D
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7709/dscf0323small.jpg
Wheely good Nova!
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/2712/dscf0333small.jpg
So out comes the cheep drill and wire attachments, and some sticky as **** gutter seal!
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/545/dscf0321small.jpg
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8785/dscf0322small.jpg
So underneath i cleaned the parts up with the wire drill bits, then smothered them with the gutter sealant.
This part's from where the cage was welded in,thought best to stop any rot now!
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/4606/dscf0318small.jpg
Then onto the holes.
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7679/dscf0325small.jpg
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/5206/dscf0320small.jpg
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7053/dscf0324small.jpg
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3416/dscf0327small.jpg
Front cage leg.
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/835/dscf0328small.jpg
scott.parker
21-03-09, 06:55 PM
Then Red oxided
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/2812/dscf0330small.jpg
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/4333/dscf0331small.jpg
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/1051/dscf0332small.jpg
Got to do this all again tomo on the other side, still not sure weather or not to put paint on top, or stone gard then underseal?
As i left her for the night! lol
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/1465/dscf0334small.jpg
More tomo i hope.
Scott
Good stuff.
Id paint over the red oxide, then stone chip, then underseal.
Is the cage not bolted in?? (cant see any bolts/nuts?)
scott.parker
21-03-09, 07:00 PM
Fully welded mate, yeah i was thinking of hammerite paint, then SG, then US.
Ahh right.
Yeah, underneath the car just slap a load of underseal on,its not like it needs look pretty :)

So another day's doings...Got allot done.
First off put another coat on the foot wells.
Then put some under seal under passengers side.
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5356/dscf0345small.jpg
Did the entire underside that i had red oxided yesterday.
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/2217/dscf0341small.jpg
Then i noticed some rot on the beam/chassis mount and fuel tank so wire brushed it of, oxided it and under sealed.
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6843/dscf0339small.jpg
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3269/dscf0355small.jpg
Moved under the car and noticed the cover plate to the shifter had been left bear, so...
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/9707/dscf0346small.jpg
Got the same treatment as everthing els.
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5879/dscf0356smalli.jpg
Then like what seamed like a life time, i striped, wire brushed, oxided and under sealed the underside of the drivers floor pan.
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/4571/dscf0350small.jpg
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/9440/dscf0354small.jpg
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6483/dscf0360smalld.jpg
Between waiting for the primer to dry i found some more crusty bit to tart up, behind drivers wing!
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3032/dscf0352small2.jpg
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5355/dscf0353small.jpg
So that it for now, don't know when the next bit of work will get done as I'm back to work tomo.
Scott
Nice work mate i will drop mine round next week.
Ive got stone guard in white tho.
scott.parker
22-03-09, 09:41 PM
lol lots left to do still, want to slap another coat on top of that yet, was aiming for MOT before end of April to do the png track day, but I've got to MOT the passat in April, so best do that first, also don't want them both to be annually in the same week!
Looks fun, are you doing all that lying on your back under the car?
That red oxide stuff, is it just like etch primer that you brush on?

Yep, my neck, shoulders everything hurts, and I'm starting back to work tomorrow lol
That red oxide stuff, is it just like etch primer that you brush on? Not sure, all i know is it's meant for metal use, and i bought a small tin for £3 :)

Coming along nicly.
Rather you than me doing the underseal stuff. I bet you end up coverd in everything but the kitchen sink lol

Well it's been raining on and off today, so not committed my self to working on the car, might do some more tomorrow if there is less rain.
I did how ever manage to get another coat of under seal on both side of the floor pan :)
Might yet give it another coat, but i also want to do both the front and rear arches yet, and the front inner wings.
http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/2681/dscf0362small.jpg
Slapped it on nice and thick!

Passenger side first
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/1475/dscf0420small.jpg
Stripped down with wire brush attachment in grinder.
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4692/dscf0422small.jpg

Decided after 5 years the rocker/cam belt covers need a tart up!
Rubbed down, cleaned with panel wipe and alloy primer.
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/7553/dscf0440small.jpg
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/9114/dscf0443small.jpg
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/1231/dscf0444small.jpg
Both alloy primed, and belt cover white undercoated, still need a blast of filler primer in a day or so once they harden a bit.
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/8110/dscf0445small.jpg
Then I'm waiting for the spark plug cover, and top coats etc.

More prep to the cam/rocker covers.
Filler primed-rubbed back ready for more base primer maybe tomorrow and top coat fingers crossed on Sat/Sunday.

http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/2694/dscf0450small.jpg
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/6678/dscf0451small.jpg
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/3987/dscf0448small.jpg
Then i decided to try something i had been thinking about doing for a while now...
Got a set of spear rear lights and some red tint spray
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/8594/dscf0453small.jpg
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/1104/dscf0458small.jpg
Didn't work quite to plan, the tint bled under the tape!
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/5899/dscf0462small.jpg
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/5973/dscf0461small.jpg
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/9803/dscf0472small.jpg
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/913/dscf0473small.jpg
I'll try cleaning the bit thats bled off and see how it looks.
I then found some clear rear's i had also laying about in the shed!
So as my dad was willing to do it, i let him loose with a dremal on them..
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/8125/dscf0455small.jpg
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/2928/dscf0457small.jpg
The idea is to use clear bulbs with color elements or LED's
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/3943/dscf0454small.jpg
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/7203/dscf0465small.jpg
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/1656/dscf0467small.jpg
Two nice even coats later and they are almost the same red-ness as the GM set.
Scott

17-04-09, 07:23 PM
Just took the tape off, and I'm glad to say they look awesome! :D
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/8373/dscf0474small.jpg
If it was not for a slight spec of dust on one of them you wouldn't know they were tint sprayed.

L.e.d bulbs are ftw mate i have them on mine :)
If you try to redo your experiment try ising strips of black electrical tape, it shouldnt bleed under the tape that way bud!
Ive just gotten some clear rear and im trying to decide how/what to do on them!
Nice job on those lights.
scott.parker
18-04-09, 05:48 PM
Cheers guy's glad you like the light idea's i had (I'm going to try redo that taped one)
Anyway on with today's fiddling, so i got on with more work on the cam/rocker covers today, first off i de-nibbed them then gave them a quick lick over with the ally primer, then went into watch monster garage and have a sandwich while they dried in todays lovely sun :D
Nibbed back/ally primed.
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/6932/dscf0478small.jpg
Here is a sneak peak of what color they are going to be, wont show them till they are finished in lacquer, and i have my plug cover done etc. ;)

I feel like i have achieved something today, at last!
First things first. For some strange reason Chris didn't spray the passengers door on the inside, so this had been bugging me for ages now, so...
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/2395/dscf0497small.jpg
I also swapped the door lock for one of my old GSi one's, as this car as a different key for everything!
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/315/dscf0498small.jpg
First coat.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/8638/dscf0499small.jpg
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/7705/dscf0500small.jpg
Then went in for lunch to let it dry for the second coat.
Second coating
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/5890/dscf0501small.jpg
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/9130/dscf0502small.jpg
I left it for an hour or so as i had to go out, when i got back i decide to do something i had been thinking about for a while now.
Now Dar just in case you read/see this don't take offense to what i have done.
I decided to re-relocate the battery, as I'm going to be using this car on the road for at least a year, and don't want to tempt fait, so I'll be caring a spare.
Undo it ready for it's move.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/6130/dscf0506small.jpg
I got two bits of ally angle, cut and filed them, marked out where it's going etc.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/8691/dscf0507small.jpg
Then drill/counter sunk them, and screwed them down, then drilled out two holes for the ally bar that goes over the top, temp fixed it down.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/4324/dscf0508small.jpg
Then i decided to pull all the rear lighting loom out and get rid of any bit's not needed, as i was going to feed it, and the battery lead through the inner wing are.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/3895/dscf0515small.jpg

Got to do some under sealing in the rear arches yet, painting in the front wells and rear bench area, just lots of faffy jobs that take time, i can see it's going to take a while to clean all the crap out from working on it.
Glad your all liking it, it should turn out quite nice!

So i got the door lacquered up.

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/2467/dscf0521small.jpg
It's not a bad color match, though i think it's slightly redder then the rest as i didn't primer first, just rubbed back and painted on the red paint, ah well it's only a door close.
I also got the rear inner arches wire brushed back, rust treated the welded areas, then undersealed them (no pic's was working to hard)
Also sprayed my custom fill cap off my old GSi, I'll lacquer it tomo, then put a pic up.
Then did some more to the battery lead, and cut off switch panel is finished, along with a glove box blank i made from black foamex.

scott.parker
24-04-09, 08:58 PM
Yeah I'm getting really into it, though the missus is not so impressed with my new found enthusiasm! lol
Although there was one massive set back today, i found the bit the goes behind the steering wheel to make contact for the hone to work, and knock off the indicators, BUT i cant get the wheel of for ****, my puller wont go in the center is too small, and i tried pulling on the wheel while hitting the coulomb lightly to shock it free, and one of the bolts that holds the wheel on snapped, so i stopped, got a bit pissed off about it, looks like I'll have to keep it as it is.
Scott
speak to RJ about my wheel removel technic lol.
scott.parker
24-04-09, 09:03 PM
I'm worried if i try any more "rough" way's to get it off I'll do more damage, so I'm going to leave it for now.
I didnt have the wheel on but got the boss off.
scott.parker
24-04-09, 09:11 PM
I tried a CV puller, but it wont grip the boss...grr
Really good to see that your working on the car. Top stuff, I really like what your up to. Keep up the good work :thumb:

Did some little bits today.
First off i finished the custom filler cap off (use to be on my old GSi)
Put a few coats of lacquer on it.
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/161/dscf0534small.jpg
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/2826/dscf0535small.jpg
So need some opinions please.
Before with ally cap (it's quite heavy)
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/5376/dscf0568small.jpg
With custom, thats quite light weight.
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/7458/dscf0569small.jpg
Though it does seam more vivid in color...humm opinions please.
If I'm not sure i can either, paint the flush custom black and use it, or paint the alloy one black??
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/3974/dscf0572small.jpg
Also while a had a few spare minuets i decided to take the grill apart to repaint the slats, and add a badge Ive had for years.
Few coats of acrylic matt black did the trick!
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/8725/dscf0545small.jpg
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/1668/dscf0546small.jpg
While i was working on it i noticed some of the interlining ribs that hold the slats together were broken, my dad had the idea of using a soldering iron to melt it back together, we used this idea to also re-attach it to the main frame of the gril :D
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/6984/dscf0556small.jpg
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/5885/dscf0557small.jpg
I recommend anyone who needs to fix the grill to the frame do it this way.
Then the badge.
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/4763/dscf0543small.jpg
Bought it years back, think it was Doncaster show 2003

scott.parker
27-04-09, 04:46 PM
OK so the rain let off just long enough for me to get out and do at least one thing to the car...
that will be light weight door handles then lol.
So back to what Christian said
I was modifying the handles to light weight/flush fit items, we shall call them DH'Development style handles lol
So it went something like this...
Cut the rubber covers off
http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/3945/picture001small.jpg
Then placed the handles back in to find that part of the rubber cover has the bulges on it to rest on, meaning the handles were hitting on the handle opening, at first i was like NOoo what have i done, then i realised there was potential for a nice flush fit handle, so marked up where the henge was hitting, grabbed a file and attacked the doors!
http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/3377/picture002small.jpg
Drilled out with 8mm drills on two side one's,then step drilled the rest with 8mm-10mm then finished with 13mm OD,and primed.
http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/9240/picture003small.jpg
Both done and top coated in rover hurricane gray (thats almost the same color as the standard rubber cover)
http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/4677/dscf0553small.jpg
So this work was done at the weekend, but i fitted them today, as i wanted to make sure they had dried quite well.
Onto the fitting today.
Quite a flush finish to them.

Today's been quite busy with just ordering new parts and sorting out the payments for these scuttle covers I'm doing,
Then just as i stepped away from the PC to grab lunch...
I got a text, it was from the guy i gave some parts to get sprayed, i was frigging excited to say the least, so sod lunch!
I ran down stairs grab my keys and shot to the bank on my way to collect them...
So hear they are in all there freshness :D
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/1554/dscf0586small.jpg
Before i placed the rocker cover back on there was the small matter of trimming the underside of the bonnet to stop it hitting like it was before.
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/5916/dscf0588small.jpg
Fitted the wing mirrors/grab handle back on.
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/7818/dscf0595small.jpg

My solid engine monts are the same as i used on my old car, and that too hit on the bonnet...
http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/5378/dscf0364small2.jpg
Don't know why the solid mounts bring it up higher, they just do, but i guess it's not a bad thing, as it means less chance of popping the shafts etc.
As for the color it's a VAG color Delphine Grey Mica (I'm not lying, as i thought it was Dolphin to lol) it changes from light to almost black. :D

Just a quick update from what got done yesterday.
More shiny freshness!
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3428/dscf0597small.jpg
I got these wing's with the shell when i bought it.
The one's that were on the car were going rotten in places and in bad condition after the previous owner had used mold grips or something to pull them/roll arches for emergency clearance etc.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3715/dscf0600small.jpg
Nice aerial removal!
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/1333/dscf0598small.jpg
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/1882/dscf0602small.jpg
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3271/dscf0601small.jpg
Passengers side, bad dents from said mold grips.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/8634/dscf0603small.jpg
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3979/dscf0605small.jpg
Now you would think i would know better then to send the new wings off to spray without trial fitting them
I was rushed into getting them to the sprayers and didn't trial fit them (cant believe i did it) so yesterday i spent age's on the drives side trying to get it to fit, there GM one's but it just didn't line up right on my car, the fixing points do, but the part that meets the grill don't, it goes under the headlight!
But finally after a few hours i got it on to an OK state.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/870/dscf0606small.jpg
The passengers side was not so bad, only had to re-drill a hole in the front panel to attach it into as the hole was to high.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/4721/dscf0608small.jpg
Although the fit is a bit poor under the indicator
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/4379/dscf0609small.jpg
The panel gaps are no to bad.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/7702/dscf0610small.jpg
Did get some of the other side, but the SD card wouldn't load them..
Bonnet to wing gaps.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/4222/dscf0611small.jpg
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/9154/dscf0612small.jpg
Quite a bit of weight saving also, as the new one's have no stone guard on the back, the old one's are smothered in it!
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/8676/dscf0615small.jpg
Thats all i got done yesterday as i didn't have much time on it, hope to get more done today "if" the rain holds off..

Ad, yes standard AVO springs mate, and they are half way, hope that helps.
Yesterday i got round to sorting my windscreen washer problem out, the jets were blocked (so i thought) but then i think it might have been also one of the pipes, so anyway i found a lorry blade washer in the garage (think it's something i got from Baxter years ago?)
So i stuck it on, and it works good enough!
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/3765/dscf0669small.jpg
Also when i was round my mate mikes at the weekend i realised he had just what i was looking for, the part that separates the air under the dash, so i had that, then couldn't be bothered to take dash apart to fit it, so i cut it in half lol I also made a blank for the center vents, then used gaffer tape to fix it all back together (OK not the best way,but meh!)
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/5909/dscf0660small.jpg
I then realised why the "new" heater blower i had was not working, the fuse had gone  this was because the old motor had seized and blown the fuse, so i replaced the fuse and the new motor worked.
old motor

I then thought to stop the rain getting back into it and doing the same i would make a cover for it. I drilled a small hole to let water out in the bottom corner.

Back onto the car and working.

OMG cant belive the DVLA, Ive just found out my logbook, i sent it off age's ago to get amended to show the car as a 1998cc and the engine number change/vehicle color etc... nothings been altered, so just spoke to them and if i get my car insured MOT'd i can then go to a local office and they will tax it,and send the log back to head office for the re-amendments!
What a **** about, Ive got to do this after my holiday in the one week before PV and finish the car off! lol
EDIT: It's now insured, went through Sky £570 Full comp!

Looks great!!
I just got my log book back from dvla saying I need an inspection document in order to change the cc's.. But I've got a mot and insurance on it. Guess I will try get some tax on it then try again...
scott.parker
27-05-09, 07:46 PM
Thats right, they wont let you change it over like you use to, just sending the form out etc, they now need you to provide evidence you have had it inspected by some one first etc, as i have to do this, then take my log book to my local DVLA tax office to complete the form with cc's and color change before they will hand over a tax disk, total ballach as I'm rushing to get it all sorted for PV.
Scott
Just get a vauxhall dealer to comfirm the engine number/cc in writing and send that to the dvla, sorted.
Looking very nice Scott, why is thinking of failing the exhaust???

Cheep as chips halfords filler cap, take the cover off it, then get some thin steel sheet spin a perfect circle on it thats the right size for the filler cap hole, mark out your key hole and drill it out, curve it in on the edges to the lock, and the outer edge.
Fix it to the cap with metal putty glue.

Is that a common problem on XEs? You're using a normal drivers side conversion mount?
Depends on what mount you use /\
Can everyone else see the pictures? Or is it just my net connection
novaxe235

i can see them fine.

24-06-09, 07:22 PM
Is that a common problem on XEs? You're using a normal drivers side conversion mount?
Iain, well on my old one i had the "conversion" engine mount on the car, as in the steal bracket you get, but it's holes were in a **** position and use to twist the engine in the bay.
When i went to solid mounts on the old car i found i could no longer use the conversion mount bracket as it was way way out!
So it on a normal xe engine mount with the solid mounts, the cam side one has been dropped down using 1x1 box as it was too high, both gear box one's were fine.
But as with my old car that engine side solid mount is still to high and was touching on the bonnet, i have seen this on other car's, I'm not sure if all the owners are aware it was happening, but you could see there cam cover/and rubber bit had worn through.

Well today a I received a Vauxhall Monterey bonnet scoop from of Pillar, cheers dude, will look good when slapped on the F/G bonnet i have.
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/6668/dscf0005p.jpg
And i also finally sorted the Opel spark plug cover out.
It took me quite some time and sweat to get the paint sanded down to the alloy again.
It's not 100% perfect to which I'm annoyed slightly, as i was sanding it with wet and dry bits of alloy got stick in the paper and gouged out deeper scratches back into it more then i was smoothing out, so it took ages to get it to how it is.
I then masked the lettering up (used electrical tape, cheers for that idea Spud) Sprayed the cover in yellow again, then let that dry, and have now applied three coats of lacquer to it.
Think it's finished, looks alright.

Took her for a quick spin earlier, i need to buy some exhaust hanger's tomorrow, my two middle section one's have gone walk abouts some ware at some point, i hit the mid section on a bump at 60mph (OK i know it's low but it should not hit the floor) Do want to get either new system or mine re-shaping etc as it's too low ware it used to go round the OEM linkage..
