Cone type filter maybe...

chrisnovaturbo
16-02-09, 11:10 PM
it will be ok lol. im heat raping the turbo, manifold and the down pipe and going to make a heat sheld up for the filter.

chrisnovaturbo

it was only £38 brand new as well so if i get heat soak problems, it ant the end of the world if i have to change it.

+1 rep.

You need a cone filter chris, foam ones have been known to be dragged into turbos and can cause pitting of the blades as bits can fall off them.

Get on the K&N site and look for part numbers of universal filters, then ring a supplyer and order a cone filter from them.

Aye
As for the handbrake cables, std Nova long side and a mk2 Cav shortside, think theres a couple of different ones tho ? I had to add a bit of threaded bar to mine.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y221/ricmetcalf/DSC00057-2.jpg

Edit: if your after another filter, i've got a Green cone filter you can have if you want ? has quite a large inlet on it tho.

Ive done something similar to my crossmember and i have to say you really need to rethink yours, its definatly not substantial enough.....infact i bet it'll hold less stress than the OE one. i didnt fit the crossmember the bloke who built it the first time round fitted it. it has been in there for a few years now and when the car was on the road it was driven hard. there is no sgns of cracking twisting or stress marks anywere. im making my own tie bars lower arms and changing the front crossmember for 50x50 thick walled box and going over the hole car stich welding were needed.

First time I've seen your thread, some serious stuff going on here, I like it :)

Gaz'd with the purple corsa runs one of those cranks without any issues so far, however they did say it needed balancing as it was far from perfect.

I'd speak to PEC about it or get the whole bottom end balanced, crank, flywheel, clutch, bottom pulley and the rods if your going to start giving it some big revs.

Sorry I disagree, 500hp is not hard to get out of a let, if you consider the mild spec of Speckys engine and that fact that made 505hp without going mad on the boost its not a hard target to achieve, its how reliable it is that counts.

8.5:1 Forged pistons
Steel rods
Stock crank
Ported head with +1mm oversize valves
Double valve springs
XE cams
Hydraulic lifters
Custom inlet
Custom Exhaust manifold
GT3076
Ecu and 1000cc injectors

There is still plenty he could do to that engine but he chooses not too and tbh why bother when its not missed a beat in 3 years, the ONLY issue I would have with that spec is the stock crank but Specky doesn't rev it anyway so that I assume is why its been so reliable.

i had a long chat with the lad at PEC at PVS. as i was looking into the steel crank they had. and tbh i was abit put off by the lack of testing.

i was told 9k rev limit, but not really be advised to hold at 9k all the time. so that put me off as a stock early XE crank will blip to 9k anyway and last at 8.5k

so just be carefull. imo fardon crank is one to go for.

Granted,

The amount of people who have actually achieved this though is very small,

Not to name names ut you know as well as me the amount over the years that have tried and failed,

And there have been a fair few attempts on mig over the years which i know you are aware of as you post on there regular.

Gav is also heading the correct way for 500bhp.

Like you say the spec list for this figure isnt huge but pulling it off seem to be another matter!

Jonlem
24-07-09, 05:09 PM
This is the thing, Gav proved what a stock let (KKK16) can do with some chips and a bit of gas a LONG time ago yet everyone has tried to do things the hard way and as yet few have beaten his time infact no nova has !

People have no excuse now not to get the results, its there in black and white to copy and short of the engine being built right and mapped well it will make 500hp, there really isn't anymore to it than that.

Over complicating things is the issue, I was there myself, building a 500hp let is one thing, building one that can take track abuse is another matter and more importantly putting it in a car with a good enough setup is the other issue.

The nearest anyone has got to a good overall package is Rob (SBD16V) and although its not 500hp (as its not specced to be) it is by far the best overall package that anyone in the Vauxhall world seems to have, when using a C20LET anyway.

I quite simply walked away from it all as to build a reliable let is going to cost big bucks, if it failed in any way shape or form its going to be seriously expensive so the Honda unit although NA is a much better option for me but then I'm not building a fwd Vauxhall so I'm not tied down when it comes to engine options

I'm in on this 500hp from Gt35's, their a 600+hp turbo, if you want a good 500hp use a GT3076R like Rick did/has, they have done 500hp/500lb ft on a yb and will easily go over 500hp if thats what you want without being so damn laggy as Specky has now found out.

Your one saving grace is the all steel bottom end, a 35R might not be so bad considering you can really rev yours if the cam profiles allow it, I still believe Speckys old spec setup was the one to work from, easily a 550hp engine that with a massive spread of power if he revved it.

Your car your choice, either way its going to be silly fast !

Jonlem
25-07-09, 03:09 PM
The fact that Steve's mate broke one in his BDT and Mike and Martin both broke the nose of 2 Cosworth ones.

However I am sure the issues have been sorted as I know 2 people personally that only use Farndon in all their steel race engines and have never had a issue so I would be happy to use one.

Infact even people that have had faults still use them which says enough.

if after a head i could sort something or pm jonlem for gaz'ds number( andy doesnt like phones.

i had trouble fitting a rad and heat exchanger pre rad in and im only using in comparison a baby turbo in a 34 0.63.

im sure you have it covered looks awesome so far

Jonlem
20-08-09, 11:12 AM
You can get a full rad in there if you shift the IC forward.

We tried all sorts on Gavs nova to see how things could be mounted and a rear mounted rad was considered but that would run into its own problems.

Personally run the ic forward, turbo to ic pipe needs re locating, run the rad 10mm behind the ic, downpipe in usual position going over towards the thermostat.

Where are the gates and screamers going and also isn't this going to be dry sumped ?

Without trying to say just go and knick someone elses ideas I would advise you to look through Turbo Gavs thread from when we did install the engine/manifold/turbo and dry sump with lines as its so tight there really isn't many ways to do things.

When the dry sump pump and hoses are installed you will find you have even less room so get that in before you make any decisions on how things will finally be.

chrisnovaturbo
20-08-09, 01:18 PM
rad is going in the back. the IC is as far forward as i can get it. if i come forward more i will have to cut the bumper more and i dont realy want to as mite as well not run a bumper as there wont be nothing left of it lol ive had the rad in the front but then ive got no room for anything like wastgate, boost pipe. and then i wont have room for down pipe and oil pump. rad in the back will be fine :d

Jonlem
20-08-09, 01:21 PM
It does fit far nicer if the rad isn't in the way, Gav had the same attitude that he didn't want the ic sticking right out of the front of the nova.

Are you using 1 or 2 gates ?

chrisnovaturbo
20-08-09, 01:28 PM
dont no about the gates. would 2 be better?

hybridturbo
20-08-09, 01:35 PM
Boot mount the radiator and run a electronic water pump :thumb:

Jonlem
20-08-09, 02:04 PM
dont no about the gates. would 2 be better?

Different tuners have different opinions on that, look through motorsport derived cars from the past and they only run one, most tuners these days only run 1, however start looking abroad and it appears a lot of people use 2.

My knowledge on wastegates is slim, I'd of thought for example that 2 38mm gates would give better boost control than 1 44mm gate yet people get great results doing it both ways and obviously one is a LOT cheaper to do and much more convenient given the small amount of space you have to work with.

There will be reasons why and I'll assume Gav can answer quite a few of those questions so drop him a PM on mig if you use it as I am sure he'll be happy to help you out

Boot mounted radiators are fine but air flow is a big problem, you can cheatyour way through that by mounting a massive alloy rad in the back (seen XS power GTR rads used) with a big fan and regardless of how good the air flow is its very unlikely to get hot, a pump would ofcourse be needed.

A fair few people who do this Audi included are concerned about weight though so fitting a massive rad isn't ideal thus they sort out great air flow, simplify the system keeping the weight down to a minimum, in a kit kat wrapper with 550hp I can't see you being too bothered about adding a few kilos to the back of a already light as fook nova shell lol

TBH Tial stuff is probably made in China, sent to the USA on mass where its assembled, engraved and packaged up. Therefore its made in the USA.....

Similar with UGG boots, they are made in China and sent to Australia where they are boxed up and sent out and still classed as made in Australia.
