You will know if it's a type c it will BTB cut into the manifold flange
Don't the others have BTB cut into them?
I was under the impression mine was type A

Ive flocked the dash, see how it comesout tomorrow...
Looking good dude, thought you'd have adjustable tie bars..

Mazz type a is the small one i sold with a jp system that came of my car recently, but a year or so ago i sold a type c one, as after buying it at bargain price held on to it for few years then realised unless i was going for 300bhp it was useless so made a big profit on it! lol
Progress is looking good paul :)

scott.parker
13-04-11, 06:05 AM
If its an injection tank there is no need.
Looking nice now mate, i hope that system will pass db tests?

there is a need if you drive it hard. with a swirl pot you can run the fuel really low for less weight. surge is not good for a engine. :thumb:

Yeah i know that guys, i had a setup, but after testing i found no lack/surge like you find on carb cars so i sold the setup.
What are your funky backbox mounts/rubbers?
Looking good Paul! ;)
Nick.
Im sure ive mounted the fu(king seats too high, going to get some rubber on the wheels and put it on the deck.
if i have i will go maris on it, cause im sick of this sh!tbox.
Are they on the lowest bolt hole of the sidemounts?
Hmm grind off the threaded bits you put on top and weld some tabs on to the tube? Would that free up a bit of height?
10mm or so, not enough i dont think.

you getting the ass with it are ya, i find it's best to leave it for a bit . have a smoke .
or you end up doing what your mate did to his red one you told me about !!
I put some more work into this thing today, decided to leave the seats before i booted it off the axle stands!
Handbrake cables on, shoes adjusted etc, drums on, shocks on, rear brake lines on, front calipers on, loom checked and in place, backplate for TBs is done, wiring to alt/starter etc done, fuel lines all re-riveted on again, looked at fan/oil cooler positioning etc.
The dash id round my mates, has come out ok without being great, but itll do!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/19f0842f.jpg
great work paul.
dont kick it off the stands lol.
Cut the pass seat rails out.
Clipped some fuel lines down, and wiring.

Fandabbiedosy Paul, is Merris helping then :d
He has been a bit, big thanks to Scotty (v8 100e i posted pics of) & Glen (Saab mk2)
Could you sit the oil cooler more to the left and stand it on its end? Will still get loads of air then but be out of the way of the rad.

I will look at this when im down there later, good idea Benn, thanks.
Just picked up a can of white, and dome racing brake fluid. Heading down tonight, hopefully the brakes will be all done later :)
Any time, good work on this dude.
Brakes you running Paul? 288 turbo/v6?

I think I have a spare set of clips. I'll have a look tomorrow, if so I'll chuck them in the post for you.

Do i need a vacuum for the fpr?

Thanks very much, if you have them thats be great! :)
How did you do the seats then?
Cut the rails out, welded some new ones in lower.
Keep up the good work Paul, saw Maris' wip on vs the other day, two nice looking white Novas
Do i need a vacuum for the fpr?
No you don't.
Looking good Paul.
Missed this thread...
how come your not sticking with the turbo?
That was a monster around Oulton Park, when it killing the vac hoses!!!

Re this, i was thinking stand the cooler on its end, so it only covering the end cap of the rad...

20-04-11, 10:45 PM
My cooler was a tad smaller but I used to run it next to the rad like Benn said and never had any probs with oil temps on the let...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/TheSimps/Nova/Nova%20LET%20Build/22-12-071.jpg
It didnt fit Benn would have hung out the grill, dont want that look on this one.
Yeh broke the turbo one up Ste. Was great fun at Oulton I do have to say!
Ah ok, tbh where you have it there will be loads of air getting in, you wont have a prob. My ic covers a big bit of the bottom of the rad and my temps are fine.

looks really tidy
So i had a go at some wiring in the bay, finally bothered to mount the fpr, had a go at the wiring inside too;
Fuel lines all clipped down;
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/32083395.jpg
Mount i monked up for thd fpr;
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/973dd72b.jpg
Bay pretty much done, just need to sort something for wiper linkage/motor, and waiting for the engine loom to be returned to me:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/7a418270.jpg
Inside wiring is getting there, all taped up in right place, all the stuff im not using has been chopped out:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/317b9c80.jpg
Next on the agend is getting the oil cooler lines made up, find a few water pipes, wiper linkage, finish flocking the dash, get the engine loom in, kick it in the bollocks, then itll be going down to Glenyboys on thd trailer to be fitted up with doors/wings etc.
Oh and ive got to weld in my lamda boss and put the tailpipe on.

26-04-11, 09:53 PM
Paul is that FPR an FSE type? as i had one on mine originally and it was too unstable, use to fluctuate/pulse at times meaning fueling was wrong and would make the car run bad, i swapped to the samll SBD type thats none adjustable etc, alls been bang on with that..
Nice update though, glad to see your sorted the seats without killing it! lol
Yeah ive heard that about fse's too, rememeber seeing someones car on the rollers with a pressure gauge jumping all over the place!
Fixed weber/cossie regulator is a good replacement.
Anyway, its looking good man, very good. I want a pass ride!!!!
chimp007_uk
26-04-11, 10:20 PM
Every FSE I've used hasn't had a problem. Luckily always had access to arolling road to check AFR and allways been spot on.
I have heard bad things about FSE's, but my turbo engine was on one, as was Craigs (similar spec 330bhp). T&R said fuelling was spot on on them both.
Cheers for comments, no problems Ad, will be booking onto a few days once Ive got Ibiza out the way....
Looking good Paul, nearly complete :)
The last of the bits got painted today. Big thanks to Gleny!
FSE's rep comes from them coining in on the chavs with p0wah boost valves yo.
Rest of their kit is the usual expensive and bang on accurate kind of gear from what I've seen.

They must be mk1 handles then, as mk2 just cut off with a knife.
Plus mk2 have the holes in ready to drill wider etc.
First up, thanks for all the kind comments :)
BREAKING NEWS- It moves under its own steam! I never thought I'd see the day!
Big thanks to my mates again for there help! This afternoon I loaded it up on the trailer and went across to ScottyBoys to use his ramp to put another exhaust box in to shut it up. It has worked a treat, as now the induction noise is louder than the exhaust!
So, then we loaded it back onto the trailer and took it back down to mine, Glenny kindly brought the dash down, so we fitted that and a few other bits and bobs.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/fece07e3.jpg
Next up is to find a set of working Mk2 6 clock dials, as the set I bought off of here are fu(ked.
Back down again tomorrow to help Tony beef up his rear mount, as I say mate, i apologise for the mess in advance its been a hectic few months, and I havent got round to tidying up yet!
Awesome, No other words.
I have a spare set or two of 6dial clocks but unsure if they are working and they prob aren't the best condition, Free to you if its any help.

Thanks mate, it was one of them DIY Frost kits, which I was a bit sceptical about at first, out of the car it looks a bit patchy, but with it in and all bolted together, Im actually quite happy with it. Its by no means perfect but considering we had never flocked anything before, and what Im building th car for im chuffed with it!

Looks awesome Paul, you've spent a lot of time on it in the last couple of weeks, well worth it:thumb:
Skateboard griptape in the footwells? Woo! lol
I like the dash, you've refitted the sides too after chopping out the vent section? Nice!
Excellent Paul, not seen this for a while now!!
Thanks for sorting my mount out mate, was good to finally meet you,car is quality, was good to see it in the flesh
Finally got there in the end, bloody satnav lol
Oh it wasn't that messy in there, you should see my garage, that's what a mess looks like
Will have to get cracking on mine soon
Be careful on your holiday, don't get done like my mates did lol
Awesome dash paul! When's it on the road then? :)
Thanks for all the kind comments.
Its completely finished under the engine bay now, washer jets, horn, lights, fan all work, all electrics are working inside,, i need a new bulb for the rear number plate light and sort the fog light out, then thats all electrics done completely.
Fitted a new clutch cable today which is shorter than the last one so has a tidier route. The steering wheel is on, although got to come back off when it gets tracked as i want the rack to be bang in the middle, so i have even lock each way.
Got a nut and bolt check to do all over, then its off for mapping soon.
Wont be on the road for a fair while yet, more like the end of the year now unfortunately.
Was good to meet you Tony, apologise for my slow work today lol, hope your happy with it. My phone died not long after you left hence me not texting back mate.
Got to source a set of dials desperately, as mapping is fast approaching!
PS Me and Scott are going to be making a set of rosejointed tie bars and lower arms for this, and depending on how they turn out, may make a few sets if anyone will be interested?
That's ok mate was good to have a good old chin wag lol
Deffo interested in the tie bar setup Paul, let me know if you want me to pop down with the setup I have,it's off chris astley if that helps
Good to hear its pretty much there Paul!

good you want them done before you bring the car to me to get set up, as the top mounts dont do alot. put mine on wheel aligner and dont give you the caster you need. i want to prove you can get big blocks to handle so will have to try a few different setting see what you get on with the best.

02-06-11, 11:10 PM
Is becoming a cracking build, it's what happens when you plan though instead of chuck it together like me..lol
Sorted a few more bits out today, nearly ready for the mapping session now.
New clocks sourced this time, temp gauge works.
Put the earth on from the alternator to the engine, and that caused a problem. The car stopped turning off on the key. Had a play with it and thought that maybe it was the trickle wiring holding just enough voltage to keep the ECU on. Turned the engine on, took the key out and it was still running, took the batt. light bulb out to break the trickle wire and it turned off, So it was at fault. We put a diode in that up by the clocks and thats now sorted. (note to anyone running MBE, that this may happen)
Paul
Looking forward to seeing it out and getting a battering!

Paul cant be arsed to look back through the tread, whats the spec on your engine?

Scott
I may be at PV but not in the sh!tbox.
Its 270 cams, qed dth tbs, big manifold, std engine (arp rod bolts)
Its 6bhp down on Ollys but 3lb/ft torque up. Je was using kent ast612 or something which i beleive are kents equivalent to piper 270.
So almost identical figures.
scott.parker
08-06-11, 04:31 PM
Is it not mot'd then, would love to hsve seen it at pv.
Well soon as im earning again ill get some cams an get mine mapped again as im only 6bhp down from yours with just my tb's (an arp's)
Nah not MOT'd yet, after my holiday now.
Totally depends which rollers youve been/go to, is yours still on the base map Scott?
scott.parker
08-06-11, 04:47 PM
No mate I got it mapped at MEK Motorsport near Cheltenham just before Combe spring action day
Check on m wip it'll b the last thing I did
Top result that for a standard engine with a set of mild cams.
Especially on "that" rolling road too.

i dont think i have posted on your build thread yet mate and to be fair with recent goings on across the forum i kinda felt that my input proberly wouldnt be apreciated from yourself but i have been watching and i have to say mate you have done a cracking job im realy impresed.
its builds like yours and a few others in the club that realy go to show that as a club we realy are capable as a whole of building realy well made cars at a standard to rival some of the best custom car engineering firms out there.
At half the cost i may also add.
well done mate im pleased your all but finished i just hope it fills the hole the turbo must have left. I know no mater what i have tryed to replace my nova turbo with nothing qite fits tho hole the way it did.
well done cars a credit to you mate

Lol, im jokin about breaking it. It passed its MOT today, no advisories, what i expected really seeing as everything is new on it right down to the last nut and bolt!
Cheers for comment Ste, its a bit quicker than what i expected, and the powers so smooth! It really picks up about 4.5ishK. Feels tight into the corners, brakes feel nice, im really pleased with it. Cant wait to get it out and about!
I had my turbo for about 4 and a bit years, and honestly can say i dont miss it at all.
Somewhere around the 10th CV joint I'm guessing the love for it starts to fade a bit lol
That came close to a Maris'ing that day @ Snet!
Glad it passed the mot mate, not long now ay lol
Thinking of selling my engine now,go with the similar setup you have, having a good old think over the next few weeks about it

I had my turbo for about 4 and a bit years, and honestly can say i dont miss it at all.

right, well i took it out for its maiden voyage on wednesday night to fast ford down the seafront. Nothing fell off, nor did it break down. Im expecting a catastrophic failure next outing to make up for the lack of breakdown.
just didnt want to break down in front of a ford :) Do you really not miss the turbos power?
when are we breaking this?
If you just lke building them, ill get mine over to you. Wont even be your own money lol

he dont miss fixing it all the time. now ive got it im fixing all the time lol
Nah i dnt rich, ive been there n had my fun with the turbo for over 4 years. Its nowhere near as fast as the rurbo but its still fun, and should be good on a track. I took it out again today, and it proper screams up towards 8k. Just a few niggles like tracking/set up to have done. Chris send me ur number mate! Nut and bolt check to do, and wash it lol!
oh you werent supposed to say that, i need some motivation! lol
Long time since I've been on here or read this thread, Great that its finished, When's my passenger seat ride? lol
Don't suppose your be at castle combe summer action day next month?

Went to get the tracking/alignment done on this today. Had the camber castor ride height and toe checked on it. Was a fair way out, but all sorted now. Feels much better.

Done about 300 miles or so in it now, and fcuking loving it so far!
How does it compare to the turbo?

I'll stick my neck out an say it possibly accelerates up to 100mph similar or quicker then the turbo would have, due to less chance of massive power wheelspin etc??
Might be wrong, but if it's near 200bhp and my 185bhp is anything to go off...
Mazz you should have another go/passenger in mine since after the mapp, saying that i need cash ASAP!
Sounds like a deal! Not thinking of bumping the for sale thread are we?

Dunno mate, got some SR/Sport parts i could sell, the mk1 very nearly went on ebay last night, but not now as missis has sworn she wants it! (explain another time or pm) Track car needs a few things sorting so i can possibly use it IF Ive got the cash, as Ive paid for Trax in sep, but no job, no money coming in, mot on Astra expired 2 months ago (found out this mo) so that in the garage now.. Life mate, how the hell I'm am meant to get back on top if i keep getting hit down..
Acceleration wise it wouldnt stand a chance against the turbo. From 40upwards, the turbo would slaughter it. But its not slow by any means. Easily clocks the speedo in no time. It isfar lighter, handles much better, and just feels more planted. Im growing to love the tb sound too!

lol Dam it, wishful thinking then..
But yep TB's are the only way to enjoy noisy driving IMO, sod your twin carbs etc...

No chance, well maybe for the first 5 metres.
Mine even whopped my pals bmw 130i Msport of the line, I was shocked. I was expecting him to get more grip then me catching him up.
i went in it yesterday, isnt far of the turbo, plus you dont have to watch the boost gadge waiting for it to blow up each time you nail it.
and best of all you can go round a bent without the cv blowing up!!!!

(note to anyone running MBE, that this may happen)Paul
Paul, cheers for that. Mine's been doing this for ages. I know it's something to do with the MBE ECU relay getting a small enough "leak" voltage just to keep going. My way of turning off the engine is to step on the brake once (brake lights on = voltage drop) to shut down the engine. Just one of those things... LOL
Best,
Niek

And i was going disagree with Scott regarding the 0-100 times. 1/4 mile terminals prove that also.
In 3rd + gear especially.

So what your saying Ad is i need a turbo on my TB's lol
Nah, stick with bodies for track use. Or a low power turbo.
I'll never forget my pass ride in Pauls turbo at Oulton, mental stuff watching the speedo jump up in like 30mph sections, funny as fook in the straights and proper fun lol

Good, oulton was a good crack! Have to do it again sometime Ad!
Bargain of the year- 4 cav slabs with centre caps, 2 yoko slicks, 2 road tyres- £30.
Whers the tractor blue?

One day, one day
1,000 trouble free miles.
Handling is lovely, feels really planted through the bends!
Is it running different suspension to the turbo? How come it handles better?

lol obvious answer! controllable power, and less of it!
Good to hear all is well Paul.
Yeh much better spec than the turbo susp wise-
new gaz stuff, much lower, stitch welded evry seam on the car, all new red bushes all round, few RJs too, proper cage goin through to front turrets, proper 4 wheel alignment (castor, camber etc), new bearings in my ecc. top mounts, quaife 2.5 quickrack.
Next up is RJ tie bars & TCA for more castor & camber.
Looking @ the spec now its pretty impressive even if i do say so myself lol
Get some gaz golds while you're spending :d
Are you still using that cav secondary rear arb you had on the turbo?
Ive got gold pistons in the front, just without the adjusters :)
Nope, am thinking of doing it, although the back feels nice & stiff as it is tbh. Ill do a trackday in it and see how it feels.
Good to hear it going well Paul, there are a batch of 5 tie bars kits being made at the moment if your interested. If you want to use rose joints of your choice ( McGill ones ) then the price would come down by just under £100
its got all this new stuff and not one track has it seen! mite aswell break it for spareslol
Going to be making my own mate, thanks for the offer though!
Not been on here for ages, Awesome to see it complete and on the road etc. Really Really weird seeing that reg again. I miss it.

Looks nice Paul. Shame I missed the meet this weekend, would of loved to have had a nosey round it.
I've finally got round to changing the noisy gearbox, it's only taken me a year and three months to find the motivation... Test drive seems fine. God how I hate gearbox oil!
