Paul
sorry mate i read it wrong ive got a t3 setup on mine, but there more or less the same, just stuck with the pipes oil and water, also the oil drain one aswell
go to a pipe place and have some made up?
Dont know whats round your way, but a hydraulic pipe place round here, blokes sound, all pipes etc good for like 200psi some even like 2000psi!
Nice find on the Cesaros :)
Is this turbo going make some decent boost this time?
Finally subscribed !
Got a turbo sorted then ?
On the Journal bearing Garrett turbos I wouldn't bother with the water fittings, they never run them on a Cosworth and I did check this with CR Turbos when my mate installed his.
If anything it stops super heated water returning the header tank and it also makes the install look tidier.
In a ideal world you could have a rad for the water system on the turbo but as this is a nova there is a little hope of fitting one anywhere where it would actually do anything.
Made the downpipe so far, now when I make mounts for it, one to the block and one to the chassis, am I right in thinking i can use solid metal to the engine from the downpipe, and to the chassis, i need a rubber mount?
Yes that should be fine Paul
Few pics, excuse my Iphone quality pics lol:

looks well mate really really nice nova, you have put some effort into it
Looking good Paul, any idea when it will be off for mapping ?
My internet connection is rubbish at the moment so I apoligise if its been asked (it takes AGES to load each window so I've not looked through the whole thread)
Looking good Paul, cant wait to see it finished, where did you get the centre section, custom made jobbie?

Erm looking to have it mapped my maybe end of March?
Right done a bit more to the exhaust tonight, and the fcuking rain was so bad its got into my garage, so i got a wet back  Lol
Anyway, I completed the rest of the downpipe, made sure the front mount to the block I made bolts up well, and it does, then I made another mount from the rear of the gearbox to the back end of the downpipe.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0045.jpg
ignore the hole in the joint my gas gave up at a vital time, took me a while to realise
First non welded clamped joint will be from the downpipe to the middle box, as I'm a bit of an amateur at this whole exhaust making malarky can anyone see any problems with that?
Next question is the middle box is a big old boy, and fits in quite snug, the downpipe has no play whatsoever, 5mm if u shake it hard, and whatever the engine tilts when I boot it/let off. Now in some places I may have to ajust the body with my hammer :D , have to see.
Where the box is big, and is well up in the tunnel, there simply isn't enough room for a rubber and hanger with the box in the tunnel, and directly after the box the tunnel gets narrower:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0044.jpg
I cant see there being enough room there to get my hanger in either. So I've had a few suggeustions as to how to get a mount in. Any more anyone can think?

Like this.
What exhaust system is that btw????
Benns idea looks like it'll work.
A big exhaust clamp around that pipe, then bolted down through a bit of flat plate(the red bit), and then bolted through the car floor with some bolts/nuts, and rubber mounts?
OR dont bother with a mount there?
My exhaust system has no hangers until the middle box twin ones by the fuel tank....
But on your setup it might put a lot of stress on the downpipe joins....
Are you not going to need a flexible join in the system to stop it keep cracking under the engine moving. Like the bolts with the springs on on the standard system?
Just ordered a 6" Flexi from the bay, going to put that inbetween the downpipe and middle box.
Pics of new inlet: Is it ok to run the injector rail the other way round?
So the feed closest to driver, and return closest to passenger?

dam you! the standard one doesnt fit, but it does in reverse, would that ba ok?

12-02-09, 11:01 PM
yes mate, the one i have never fitted it was held down with jublie clips lol, can give you some details of you want one like one above ?
I am fitting a calibra radiator, to aid with my ongoing cooling problems, to do this, it needs to go down, so had to cut a bit out of the cross member. Which is fine, as I orginally planned to reinforce it with a 4mm plate across the front.
After thinking for a while and realising just how crap the cross members actually are (split it three times now!) I decided I was going to knock up my own cross member from scratch. I am using 2" box section for the X-member and 4mm plate to mount it welded to the chassis legs.
I done a load of dainty fairy measurement's, before getting into the manly job of cutting and grinding lol. No rust either :thumb:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0050.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0051.jpg
Then the grinder decided to give up the ghost, so thats all for tonight folks :(
Finally pic of the rad, its approx. double the size of the Nova one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0052.jpg
Paul
'Kin hell, that rad is the size of the front end! lol
Thad rad it quite large lol, a gsi one not good enough?
'Kin hell, that rad is the size of the front end! lol
Indeed, but it will keep the bastid thing cool. Whatever else I have tried has failed so hopefully this will sort it out eh :)
Thad rad it quite large lol, a gsi one not good enough?
No, is the short answer, never has been on my car, for others it works fine, but has never kept mine cool (well cool enough for me to be happy with). Even the brand new Valeo one last year didnt.
Id have braced it before cutting it off tho...
Looks good.
Id have braced it before cutting it off tho...
Looks good.
After speaking to a few reputable people (no names mentioned just yet as it may have moved!) they decided for me that theres no point, as the standard X member doesnt actually do much as a cross member LOL
djbrowney
23-02-09, 12:02 AM
i had a td rad from a corsa in the front of my old nova, fitted a treat no cutting unloved what so ever :thumb:
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i70/djbrowney/982367000a3847515415b238695142l.jpg
the t34 would have hit the radiator anyway.
So I went down to the yard last night and cracked on with my cross member.
Managed to get it on and drilled, all the holes line up, and suprisingly they are exactly where the old ones were!
So I cut the old one off last week, and plated the chassis, and box sectioned it underneath with 4mm plate:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0055.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0056.jpg
Then I cut the 2" box section to length, and it was going to hit the downpipe; so i cut a notch out of it:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0053.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0054.jpg
Should be enough clearance:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0053.jpg
I decided to add lowering blocks in underneath so I can get 4 bolts from the tie bar to the new cross member. It is also going to be stronger welding the cross member higher up as otherwie it would be welded to the plate hanging joined by box section rather than welded to the chassis leg:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0057.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0058.jpg
Few pictures of the near finished article:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0059.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/lashednova/IMG_0061.jpg
Not only can I fit my radiator in now, it is also about 100 times stronger than the standad item...

well done dude where were you running today i got 2 888's if you need them mind:thumb:
How much you after Gareth and what size?
Was running @ North Weald
they are 205 50 16 smallest 16 they do ill pm you pics tomorrow and you can make me a offer
Oh and on a sidenote, I have just ordered a solid lifter double valve spring cylinder head, so I can run 2bar of BOOOOST lol
Going to be going back in for mapping as soon as its done. Think my air filter is suffering massively from heatsoak, so that is getting moved, going to try and have it poking out the front bumper, not by much but just very subtely.
Got MOT in the next couple of weeks.
I am in the process of ordering all the bits i need to have an Ally rad fabricated by a friend of mine, core size is 300x670x78, so that should see my heat issues sorted out.
Thanks to Mr Baxter for pointing out my wheel wobble on the strip at PVS, I have since welded in another 2" Box section in front of the other and stitched them together, it is solid as feck now to put it bluntly. Chucked it into a sharp bend today at about 70 and it just went straight round it, whereas it would have dived in a bit before.

they sound good to me.
I wont be at pod this weekend.
The inlet has gone in to have a couple of bits done to it, awaiting the new cylinder head from SBS.
And this is my new side project so to speak:
Still having trouble with overheating, so I bought a large intercooler, cut the boost pipes off, going to have a 5mm ally plate welded over there, and then my radiator fitting where i require them.
Few pics:

So your replacing the rad with a ic, that should work yes.
But i've gotta say i'd look in to why you have such a prob with heat, when others have no probs...
I think its just the turbo sits so cose to the rad, its fine when driving along, its just s soon as i hit traffic...
What does it get to on the gauge? Can you fit another fan on there? It is ucking the air yeah? Not blowing, i know its stupid.

either the relife valve was stuck open on the oil pump an cause the big end to heat up or the end caps on the road were on the wrong way round, either way its trashed

what boost pressure is that on mate?
what cams do you run, holds power all the way to 7k :D:D:D:D
XE cams on std. timing marks, that was boosting up to 23 psi then tailing off down to 17psi by the limiter, they can open the valve 100% then shut it down when the revs climb (if i understood them right lol)
Well done Paul, you deserve some luck with your car. Really good power figures.

just point it and hope for the best :D
In all honesty its down to the driver. If you plant your foot it will wheelspin obviously, i hit the limiter in fourth and changed into fifth hard and within a second it was spinning up. However, when you get a feel for it you can sort of guess what will make it spin and what wont. But fcuk my old boots once it gets going, does it go! In anything other than dry conditions it would be a complete handfull! I built the car to scare me, it ticks that box lol.

02-11-09, 10:40 PM
That is one beautiful, smooth curve! Excellent result mate.
I'd be checking every nut and bolt and major chassis areas regularly as that kind of power will want to find the weakest point of the car and smash its ass off!!
discoinferno
03-11-09, 06:31 AM
i know what you mean, i never used to use mine in the wet as the temptastion to use the throttle was to great and it would just spin even in 5th and 6th on the motorway!
awesome curve again
Im off to get it sound tested tomorrow, if its below 102db, Im doing a trackday at Woodbridge on the 21st.
where is this track day paul as wouldnt mind comming to see your beast out
Well, had it sound tested today, and recorded 102dB at 3/4 revs.
So hopefully I'll be fine on the day, as Ive just booked it.
If anyone else is up for it, let us know.
Cause its probably going to be either cold or wet or both, the circuit has a lot of run off and nothing to hit really, so I've planned ahead lol

Shait mate, not good!
Hope it's just a slightly bent exhaust valve with no head scoring etc.
I have been there and done the missed gear trick, did it in my XR2i and the old silk GSi while "overtaking" a Audi TT, went for 4th hit 2nd lol
Ive rounded up some troops for the morning, so ill post up my findings.
May the luck of the car god's be with you when you take it apart.
Bad news Paul, you have the same luck as me.
While you are there please can you check the play in the clutch arm for me though if you get chance?

what is your limiter set to paul? what valve springs you running?
Rev limits set to 7k.
If you see Chips post over on VS, you will se what I've done. The shims have been re-designed to stop this happening.
It does appear from initial inspection that I have bent just one exhaust valve.

All sorted, should be running again tonight.
No bent valve just wedged open 2mm as the solid lifter shim had flipped off, on one exhaust valve, which can happen when the engine hits the rev limiter.
New design (problem has been known since the late 70's, but not by me) of shims will stop it from happening again.
Steve
sounds good then so paul should still be out for woodbridge track day. as always good work steve

Just bought a few new bits for it...
It has been bought a line lock valve so I can do a proper burnout in the fecker.
And also a trailer so when I blow it up burning it out, i can still get home.

A trailers a good idea incase things go wrong!
Line lock ? on a fwd car !
Thats what the handbrake is for unless you plan to lock the front wheels

You can put a line lock on the rear wheels :thumb:

Yeah TBF unless it's a hydraulic hand brake then it's just going to stretch the cable, mine didn't like it too much for the "infamous" burn out pic lol
<<
TBH my handbrake would totally lock the back wheels, the issue with fwd is the front tyre grip will just drag the rear wheels along.
No line lock will sort that out, its just a fwd thing.
Yeh but even on the hanbrake it'll still drag the rears, this wont stretch my cable every time.. But agreed yeh FWD will drag the rears
Well i picked up the trailer for this yestaday. The Vectra tows it lovely, didnt even know it was on the back.
Its a Woodford Lightweight 12" x 6" bed size, single axle, 12 months old. Bought some tie down straps and a 1100kg winch for it today, going to mount the winch tomorrow if its not too cold.

see you in a bit mate !
Ive booked onto Snetterton on the 28th April and the 28th June!
So after spending all weekend messing about getting stupidly drunk, and buying materials, and figuring out why my car kept cutting out on full boost I built some new garage doors which are wider so I can get my trailer in, and they open outwards which helps massively!
Today I decided to start doing a few bits to the Gaymobile. I decided I wanted to put my air filter back on, and move my oil cooler to the front:
http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs453.ash1/24963_357007582399_637782399_4080144_5188458_n.jpg

Good stuff mate, going have cut a hole in the bumper for the cooler??
Are the Snetterton days full days??

bad news paul, do you know the reason for failure?
gutted for you mate hope you sort it soon, its only a saturday to repair if the head dont need skimming :)
was on a cometic, heads been skimmed, going for the ZLET oil pump, new cometic, new studs + nuts (i rounded some off taking them off doh) so replacing studs as a just in case too, new timing belt, inlet gasket etc.
Whilst the engine is out I am fitting a Hockley plating kit, which sould be done tomorrow, some solid engine mounts, welding some cracks up, fixing my rear Gbox properly instead of having it just welded to the floor, and also my eccentric top mounts (maybe if i can be bothered lol).
Also the Vectra may soon be given the boot...

Overheating the engine at least twice may had had something to do with it.
As for the other problems, probably due to Paul trying to break the lap record at Oulton Park.

Turned my attention to my standard engine mounts LOL
So decided to make some solid ones, used this TAS? one to mock up with:
Sourced some bushes, bit of jiggery pokery later:

So all I have left to do now is finish off the OS mount which actually bolts to the block, as we didn't like the idea of hanging it throught the aluminium astra gte item.
Going to collect the engine now from Milton Motorsport.

Just noticed your block, where do you put your oil return Paul?
Good work, you don't waste any time!!
That aint the block he uses Keith.
You cheeky fook Mr Brown, i got home at 11.15 today! Its one of them things thats worthless if it aint working lol. If it dont work properly it aint worth having. Thanks for all the comments, just got in from the yard, got all the mounts fittrd with the spare block, made new OS mount which iv just remembered i forgot to tossing paint. Got to weld some sleeves in the chassis leg, cause the 12.9 tensile bolts only came in a cap head for the solid engine mounts. I dont like the idea of 8.8 or just leaving holes for the allen key in the chassis. Then itll be all systems go with re-filling the hole!
