Recently I have, blown the headgasket, fixed it, had a ZLET Oil Pump fitted, welded on a hockley plating kit, painted bottom half of the bay, and painted some other bits and bobs, made some solid engine mounts, done Snetterton, destroyed my inlet manifold, had the inlet manifold fixed.

So it went like this:

Hockley Plating kit welded on and bottom half of the bay painted:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs486.snc3/26595_385940302399_637782399_4346657_5073867_n.jpg

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs486.snc3/26595_385940612399_637782399_4346662_7037828_n.jpg

Re-wrapped my downpipe:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs319.ash1/28106_387161152399_637782399_4375604_6035772_n.jpg

Making the solid mounts:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs486.snc3/26595_385941747399_637782399_4346676_6144629_n.jpg

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs486.snc3/26595_385942047399_637782399_4346677_7228322_n.jpg

Didnt like the idea of hanging it throught my Astra GTE Alloy mount, so made a new drivers side mount up out of steel:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs506.snc3/26595_385939587399_637782399_4346631_5145974_n.jpg

Painted up some bits and bobs:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs506.snc3/26595_385940977399_637782399_4346667_3608888_n.jpg

Got the engine back:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs506.snc3/26595_385940977399_637782399_4346667_3608888_n.jpg

Put it back in the hole, you can see the finished drivers side mount here, and my bling painted painted bits lol:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs279.snc3/28106_387162427399_637782399_4375645_2398229_n.jpg

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs543.snc3/29746_387472802399_637782399_4384232_8043262_n.jpg

Fitted the remaining bits back on:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs503.ash1/29746_387472072399_637782399_4384227_6971489_n.jpg

Done Snetterton, destroyed a CV, changed that then destroyed the inlet manifold:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs306.snc3/28936_387925987399_637782399_4393804_166689_n.jpg

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs536.snc3/30433_389824232399_637782399_4434562_4436236_n.jpg

So had it welded back up by a mate of mine:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs284.snc3/27886_398168972399_637782399_4631121_5391268_n.jpg

Had some struts put in, to stop it from bowing out again, this is only temporary fix, but should suffice for PV and Snet @ the end of the month:

And in prep for a dirty burnout at PV I am fitted all new brake lines, with a line lock, and for sensible driving a bias valve.

its 350bhp when last mapped mate, engine is pretty decent spec now iirc omegas, steel rods,z20let pump, oil spray jets, double spring and solid head, xe cams, t34

yeh, pretty much, /\

the VXR injectors maxed out at 355bhp, to be honest, I dont want any more power, but with change of injectors, I reckon it would do 400 maybe, then the turbo would run out of puff.

i run mine at 330bhp (16-17psi) and tbh that is way to much lol ive run it at highboost only a few times since i ve had it mapped, its just even more pointless than 330 lol lol lol lol lol

you trying out for totb again this year mate???

I have painted a set of my spare wheels pink;

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs106.snc4/35677_403745447399_637782399_4783058_5998927_n.jpg

I have also bought some 350lb front springs, GAZ, just got to get the spring cup/platforms machined to take them (SPAX) as they are 3mm smaller I.D.

Finally got round to fitting my eccentric top mounts too!

And I'm doing Snett on Monday!

Big thanks to Browney and Marris for their help n that yesterday!

To be honest I think it was quickest thing there in a straight line all day, blew a 510bhp 2wd EsCos away, bloke was mortified. Killed a new Skyline, M3 CSL and few other exotics :D Shame I had to take it easy round the bends in the last sessions as to not blow the CV joint to pieces...

How on earth does the chassis crack like that?

most likely turning in hard on the brakes, which is actually a far higher force than acceleration, contrary to popular omg-its-a-let-plate-the-chassis, belief lol

it makes it worth while, its not about how much money you have, its about how many cv joints you can change in a day! i can say, its the most fun and fastest track car ive had the pleasure of breaking and blowing uplol , and best of all it was built in a chicken shed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! new cars are crap compared to a rusty old nova!

scott.parker
01-07-10, 06:49 PM
Keith at guess i would say outers, but I'll probably be wrong, as it is Paul he'll do the opposite to normal! lol

Paul
01-07-10, 07:22 PM
its the inners it keeps killing. And I have figured out why.

When it ripped the bolt holes out of the floor (rear mount) the new bit I welded in, is 10mm too far towards the drivers side, so the short shaft is constantly at full extension, so when I go round a bend, it pulls it too far, and just kills it.

Alex J
01-07-10, 07:39 PM
i like rolling around in cv grease and smelling of gearbox oil, it makes the track day worth it!, paul you owe me a sports direct.com air max vest as that last day killed it!!!

Do you want your Sportdirect.com boxers back Alex, they plumbed the driveshaft hole up well, but now are redundant as I have the CV back in.

I have no idea what I last said about this in my thread, but I welded a new rear floor section in the car, as i riped it out. When i re-installed the rear floor mount i got my measurement 10mm out, hence the constant CV problem.

So i fixed that, and then decided I wasnt happy with the wiring, I have just finished doing in, not too many pics but:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs203.snc4/38501_413311417399_637782399_5026939_540337_n.jpg

I think the people who raise it do so as there theory is that the wight gets distributed to the font onto the wheels, but all Ive ever done is turn my Avo's on to max stiffness to stop it from bogging down and losing traction that way etc (hence solid rears no movement)

tipping it forward does put a tiny bit more weight on the front wheels, but it's gonna be a small difference, the main thing is it doesn't lift the nose and camber the wheels to 5 degrees positive.

Yeh I'm goin USC, love it! TOTB wasn't a go-er for me this year. If you have seen my car down the 1/4 then you will see just how much the back square down, which doesn't help traction.

What was wrong with the yellow shell?

Nothign really, I just wanted to start a fresh, do it properly, how I should have done it the first time, blasted it, proper cage, TIG instead of MIG on cage etc.

Senesible colour, more track orientated...

I could have re-done the yellow one, but that would have left me without a car, which I didnt want.

Hey Paul, looks like you've found a solid base for a new shell. Can't wait to see the pics of it blasted! Are you having it primered/sealed before you get it back or getting it back bare metal?

Im not sure yet, probably primed, but apparentely some sort of transparent primer/sealer which wont react with paint, stop the rust and also you can weld over.

I picked up a fibreglass boot for this today with doors and some new tyres for the yellow one! Cheers Browney!

Whats sencibly priced?

I have a blaster, and am toying with building a rig in the garage, and just "buying" the shot, and binning it after its gone etc.

Its dirt cheap, but will be messy, will the waste of the shot, outweigh the cost of having it done?

Yeh, it is a good idea, it strengthens it up for future jacking, makes it look nicer, and also when you weld the plate , your acually adding quite a lot of strength cause its putting a proper box section over two seperate bits of chassis, that are otherwise only joined with 6 spot welds.

Thanks Ben, it is improving :)

Or something more subtle (I doubt)

Shells coming on well, very very clean IMO

Wise choice, the problem with any big power let is it has its fair share of problems, anyone that uses on eas much as you have will openly admit that, where as a xe will take punishment all day if you don't go too silly with it.

Look at Olly Novas for example, cheap spec, throw away engine if it all went tits up, only issue is the need for a decent box but thats bugger all in comparison to running a let engine reliably for any length of time.

If you need a SCCR gearset I have a brand new one here from Steve.

All the stitch welding is now done on the inside and underneath, all I have left to do is the Front X member, and make some strenghtening plates for it.

Done the two repairs that needed doing at the front end, one on the bottom corner of the splash shield and the other up by the suspension turret.

Both rear arch/sill corners are cut out and ready to be properly repaired. The inner arch behind is having a new section and then Ill look at the arch repair section corners.

Need to get some metal for the spare wheel well.

Nice progress Paul, welds in all the right places & more.

I didnt see the engine choice swap to n/a coming but it makes sense esp if track days are your thing.

[edit] I see the chassis leg is still intact, why not consider Oli Danker's old smallblock motor? lol

Nice work Paul.
TB'd XE is always a good bet tbh.
Take abuse all day long, ok not as mental/fun as your old engine (fcuking bonkers lol ), but enough power to make it quick on track and pennies to replace standard xe bits.

i have seen alot of problems on fairly high hp c20let's ( most are budget builds though, whihc gives the c20let a bad name, when built properly by people who know what they are doing they are superb engines, pauls motor is a peach), my let so far touch wood has been superb (well apart from the first melted engine whihc was out of my control) the latest engine has be relatively trouble free. think im up to 2,000miles in the 6 months this year , 3 trackdays, and numerous runs up the 1/4

putting all that aside though i would still like a well built xe similar to will foys engine with an addition of an sccr it would be ripping along

best of luck paul :thumb: :thumb:

nice build Paul.
You must of liked it out in my old build Alex,s White one.

Worked very well, i want something cheap, at the moment my shell owes me £270.

And a bit of time, obviously got the cage going in and an xe which will make it cost more.

But i want something i can use come rain or snow!

True to a point but I'd like to see if your car ( not engine ) could stand the abuse lets say Olly Hewitts did in a year. That car was massively reliable.

Not knocking your car, its certainly a good engine, but things still go wrong and give it time and I expect yours will have a few problems, putting the Elite box in it may solve any gearbox woes but at a extreme cost, more than a xe track car costs to build nearly !

Ollys old engine went into my old build and was still going strong when i sold it.
Its only its played up was when the head gasket went a few months back on Alex apart from that the engine had loads of abuse and just kept coming back for more.
I just love how it sound going upto avon rise..

i see your point i am expecting issues with the gearbox if it stays as is (hard track use will kill the synchros in no time im sure) but the plan over winter is to get the elite gearbox designed built and fitted for next spring :)

Worth a thought?

to buy a box, have an adapter plate mate, new clutch plates, mounts, shafts linkages etc it wouldnt work out much cheaper if at all than the elite sccr dog kit

i would like to use the gt4 gearbox but alot of work im sure to squeeze into a nova again all the bits required wouldnt be cheap

I've always wondered if its a good idea to put box sections between the chassis legs across where the wheel well used to be for extra strength.

I have some progress! 3months on.

Im a few ££££ lighter, pics to follow.

So i treated myself to a new welder, oerlikon 170 for those in the know. I 'acquired' a BOC bottle and had it changed on my mates account. Been to see Mr Hockly in Wales for a cage. Fitted some seat rails.

Had a good spend up @ Raldes, new bushes etc.

Popped up to GAZ and got myself some goodies, been busy with a wire wheel on the grinder and various tins of hammerite.

Been to a breakers to strip some much needed bits of a Nova.

Martin (bmw156) has dropped some bits off to me, ive got to pay him a visit and collect some more junk/goodies off of him. (when i wake up, sorry again mate :()

Mr Brown has dropped me a rebuilt XE.

Milton Motorsport is getting my gearbox for an ATB soon.

Its coming together...
