well seeing as ive been on here for about 3 years or so i thought it be about time i posted a build thread of this years rust bucket nova, brought from chris gsi, and has been i the garage for about a month now, i set to work by changing the valve stems as it had a puff or 2 , and later on this year, the small dents, and bit of rust in the door will be sorted ,ill post a few pics of past novas, as ive just leant how to post pictures , and then take it from there on the build:cool: !!

we start with a nova turbo, also know to you as the axe wagon, sold on, and was last seen in ireland..

after this was sold, i had a few renault 5 gt turbos, then an e30 bmw cab, but got bored , sold up and brought this one from erine from here, did a bit of work on this car, a bit of paint, headgasket, and ragged the living s*it out of it at a few track days, but lack of fund ment i had to sell up to start me own buisness up:( ....

http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x361/alex_merris/novamarch2010014.jpg

well after selling up and starting my own business, i had some change left over, and took a trip across the country to pick this up, progress will be slow, but want it ready for next year, and a good ragging round a few tracks, there are no plans to make it road legal as its to easy to get nicked, just a few pics of her as she sits now, and will update as work begins, head has been off with new valve stems, cam belt, headgasket and oil and filter etc already on, she fired up first time tonight, and would like to say a big thank you to paul from here for all the help and advice!!!...

Edd
13-11-10, 07:40 PM

probably cheaper/easier than sorting another one

Alex J
13-11-10, 07:44 PM
could you not just repair that door ?

probably cheaper/easier than sorting another onei did think that, but when i looked at the bottom, the bottom end of the door is hanging out, and its rotten both ends ,so id rather just get another, found a red one with no rot atall, just a small dent at the top near the handle, kant wait to try and get it of with just mole grips and a hammerlol

Connor
13-11-10, 07:45 PM
what scrappy is the red one at btw mr maris?

Alex J
13-11-10, 07:51 PM

heres the door and bits i got off...

Todays complete bodge job, baxter would be proud!

Ill let the pictures do the talking... and the mess. Gay wheels ahoy aswell!!!!, a bogde-sprayed door, and more runs than anybody can imagine! It was a painted with a creasote fence panel paint gunlol lol lol ...........

Take 2 idiots and some janky antique 'First' bus paint pink, and some 3 year old glacier white with bits in and a skin on top. No measuring gear, strainers, activator, no extraction fans, no masks, no care for what youre breathing in, a wet floor, a compressor with more water in than air and you have the perfect painting setup!

The mix of the paint was so wrong, as we used a eyed- guestimate for the mix, we had to hold the spray gun 1cm away from the panel to get the paint to actually go on!

considering a pair of bozos painted these, with the worst painting setup ever in freezing temperature they have come out suprisingly well!

That was enough of the chicken coop, so we came back to the garage, to concentrate on the £1.50 Nova!

Finished the rest of the arch repair panel.....

http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x361/alex_merris/fillerbodge001.jpg

So out came our filler setup, an old number plate and 2tonne of P38, thats being sitting in the garage for 3 years!

http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x361/alex_merris/fillerbodge003.jpg

the offending dent....

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs987.snc4/76004_456783757399_637782399_5919164_3871968_n.jpg

Gob ahoy!, Never will you see such skill with filler again!

Dude, you shouldn't fill on to paint, it should be bare metal. And remember the smoother you put filler in the easier it is to get out.

You shouldnt.

But what difference does it make if you do ?

Because ive been doing bodywork in garages for years and only sometimes do it and ive never had problems yet.

Unless it just falls out after years or something..

Because shiney paint has no key too it.
I was always taught to bare metal it as that's a much better key for filler to stick too.
Stopper some times only gets a good 80 off...

well after being 99% ready to smash it up after a go at filler work that failed, spoke to my painter freind dave kemp, at county car sprays, and we struck a deal, a favor for a favor, saw the car painted in one day, and just picked it up on the trailer, had the tyres put on the rims (cheers to market tyres southend for fitting and balancing for free) dark out side and cold so im not fitting all the bits back up, maybe over the weekend... hope you like, and you cant knock a free paint job:cool: ........

New rings, shells, gaskets; oil pump to block, sump, front and rear oil seal, HG, cam cover, inlet and exhaust gasket, new valve stem oil seals, sleeved GM head, turbo was recently rebuilt, cleaned everything oil pump, gearbox etc looks new.

Had new alternator, new bracket and bushes, loom is mint and uncut, new starter, new clutch, Magnecor leads, BCR8ES plugs, going in on solid mounts. Should be a good sound engine once its finished.

The bumper is the standard MK1 SR snowplough with the foglights fitted, all the snowplogh bumpers have a circular marking on the back for where they fit, Brett was one of the lucky ones to own a set.
I think Sturge was selling a set of fog lights last week though, I was after a set for my old one and it's sod law I sell mine and some come up for sale lol

ok, not a picture as yet, but went down the local scrappy to see if there was anything left of a mk1 sr they had in, and it had a pair of mint door cards, indicator stalks, gear nob, and best of all a passanger seat with a mint bolster. the rest of the seat was ****ed so i cut the whole thing of, took my seat down to the trimmers with the fabric, and it will be ready to collect after lunch, not bad for £25 quid!!!

Would you sell the ripped gear gaiter as i'm looking to do something? Cheers.

scott.parker
06-10-11, 12:03 PM
Top tip for you, take the gaiter back off tun it upside down, find the "thin" ware points and place some inner tube repair patches in them positions, thus no more holes will appear..

Shame you sold the SR but tbh I always remember it as Brettskis anyway lol

So have you got everything to finish the Sport off then, Dan looked like he'd put some very good graft into her... anyway you'll have something to keep you occupied now instead of having an ornament lol

Alex i stitch welded and HH plated my nova using my clark 90amp welder. Those are more than adequate.
I paid £70 for it off ebay and hire a big gas bottle at £6 per calender month.
Gotta be summat about locally for that???
If you were in Yorkshire i would gladly come help mate for cans

If you were in Yorkshire i would gladly come help mate for cansill look a bit deeper into it then, maybe cheaper to buy a welder than hire one, im also going to take my time and do the prep and paint myself!

Despite some people on here saying you need a gazillion amp welder to weld these glorified biscuit tins,i have managed just fine with that power output.Infact it welded scaff bars fine also and STILL wasnt cutting out.
When i was at college, the welders had a digital display of what power output you were using when welding,we were welding 10mm steel-power output=120amp.
Nuff said i think.
Have a look on ebay for a clark 90/100 etc, then go to machine mart, get a big bottle converter pipe (about £10 iirc) then go to a gas centre and sign up to the rental, buy a twin dial bottle gauge with flow rate and capacity (i paid £30 off ebay new) My mask was £65.Done,then its always there and will be paid for in a few days rental fees!
Then just practice on the stuff you have cut out as you will learn to weld them different from new, clean steel

Edd
06-03-12, 09:44 AM
I have a clark 90 perfect for what your doing

Nice one for doing it yourself, just take your time lining the quarters up, have a damp rag when your seaming them quarters to the pillers, keep the panel cool or they will warp
