Edd
28-10-10, 07:03 PM
I got a pair of Perelli P6000's fitted on to my alloys the other day.

Trial fitted them today, this is a couple of pics with the springs fitted that I will be using;

Look awesome IMO :d comments welcome tho.

But, took the springs out completely and lower it down;

3/4mm clearance near side;

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/a5b2aa92.jpg

But stupid Spanish coonts who built the shell must have mounted the beam slightly offset

Touching off side :(

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/1e979d32.jpg

Hears the thing, cause it's not going to be mega low, as the first few pics, will it scrub ? Or shall I mod the rear beam as I talked about before ?

Also excuse the dirt on the shell lol
More pics of what else iv done in the next few days.

Might just leave it doubt the suspension will compress that much, but not sure ???? lol

Nova_Tek
28-10-10, 09:46 PM
IIRC Nova's had uneven rear measurements something like 5mm out each side. One of my arches used to rub more than the other, just the way they are tbh.

Southie
29-10-10, 04:11 AM
I really want those wheels, badly, really really badly infact    X infinity.

My rear beam is exactly the same Edd, when I put the 15's on last year I checked my passenger side for clearance because I remembered my nova years ago scrapped on that side, I didn't check the drivers side when settled though and it buckled the lip and chipped the paint once settled down. :(

Will be nice to see this with all the new lush alloys on, definately worth putting on a Sport IMO.

Btw I shall go back to bed now lol

Edd
29-10-10, 10:25 AM
After having a think about it overnight and another look this morning I'm now going to mod the beam, I don't want there to be even a small chance the tyre could rub on the arch.

Benn
29-10-10, 10:57 AM
Very beam is pissed, dont worry.

As the arch needs paint why not fold the arch? What beam mod are we talking about?

Edd
29-10-10, 12:36 PM
Cut of the plate which the stub axel bolts too and welding it on the other side, would give 8mm more clearance

Not too keen on folding the arch tbh, I like the factory look

gazz
29-10-10, 12:58 PM
if you was to do that mod your talking about it will bring wheel in thus rubbing on shock, inside tyre wall..:thumb:

Edd
29-10-10, 02:00 PM
Errr no it won't, wheels are et33 and there's about 20mm of clearance on inner arch and shock

Had the tape measure out lol

Will F

But if you start fiddling with the rear wheel alignment, wont that feck up the geo etc?

Although yoiu should be able to counter it with some front wheel fettling I guess...

Isnt it more feasible that the rear quarters were spot welded on the pi**? Every Nova I have seen (and VW's too) is like that one way or t'other

Sloth
29-10-10, 03:56 PM
it will make it crab. not good, and handle like a 3 legged pig in a bath.

Edd
29-10-10, 04:58 PM
its only putting the wheel back where it should be tho ?

EDIT; for the front, i was thinking of rose jointed bottom arms wound in 5mm, then get alloy adjustable top mounts and moving them in to suit, but is this going to make it handle like crap ? or is it a too small adjustment to be noticed ?

.........fooking wheels lol

Benn
30-10-10, 12:21 PM
Can you not get some machined of the matching face of the wheel? Bring the ET down(up)

If dont know what that plate is there on the beam, can you not just shave it down?

Edd
30-10-10, 12:32 PM
No chance of machining the back of the wheels, bolts are well deep inside

I think I'm going to do the mods on the beam tho

scott.parker
30-10-10, 12:34 PM
Edd i know you wish to keep the arches standard etc, but i think it's the most simple and easy way to do it without messing with the beam.

Scott

Bolts are well deep? You machine the mating surface...

I'd shave the plates on the beam down, i wouldn't remove them.

Edd

Scott
Yeah I know what your saying, I hav a spare beam to try it on .....

Also if I leave it as it is I think the fronts might catch as well :(

I know all this fiddling sounds a bit silly for a set of wheels but I get bored seeing the same rims on Nova's and like to different.

ATM I'm thinking of the beam mod for the rear and r/j'd bottom arms and adjustable top mounts, but not sure lol

bazil
30-10-10, 01:15 PM
do you have a spare beam that could be used? rather than modding your good one id try it on another one to see if it worked out the way you wanted, imo its worth doing to make the wheels fit.

Benn
30-10-10, 01:33 PM
Pfft i've done things to run different rims. Its the best way. Having the norm blows goats.

PaulW
30-10-10, 03:11 PM
Could you get the rims machined to 42 offset, ie removing 9mm of material from the hub section of the rim, just like the factory would have done.

craig green
30-10-10, 04:45 PM
I looked at the wheels with Edd, I dont reckon there is enough meat on them to remove anything from the rear face tbh. 1 or 2mm tops.

Modding a beam is easy enough, but the fr will need some headscratching. Luckily I have some RJ'd TCA's if he wants to go down that route.

No way would I grind the arches on a brand new shell, sacriledge!

Southie
30-10-10, 05:00 PM
How about though getting the wheels machined and then use bolts and nuts instead of wheel bolts.

novacabrio
30-10-10, 05:44 PM
Take 2mm off the wheels, 2mm off the drum face and 2mm off the plate on the rear axe.

The plate just gives you a bit extra strength on the beam.

Silly question but does running rear discs maybe bring the overall width of the beam down or up? It may be enough to gain a few mm if it reduces the width. You'd need some accurate way to measure it but it could be worth a try? Basicly is the mounting face to face on each side narrorer on a disc rear beam? I highly doubt that both setups are identical????

Royston
30-10-10, 06:03 PM
The plate just gives you a bit extra strength on the beam.

It also act as a spacer for longer bolts to get the correct "stretch" when torquing up the bolts to provide clamp load;) if the "Stretch" length of the bolt is reduced it may result in the joint becoming loose:eek:

Is it also classed as a safety critical assembly, i.e. if they come off so does the whole wheel/stub axle:eek:

I spent many years durability testing suspension components including twist beam axles, so please don't ignore me;)

The plate isn't there by accident, if it wasn't required it wouldn't be there:thumb:

Royston
30-10-10, 06:06 PM
Just as a side issue, I really like the wheels, but is it worth all this work/and possibly risking life and limb?

Sez he riding arond the countryside of just legal slickslol

If you want any additional advice drop me a line;)

Edd
30-10-10, 06:06 PM
is the plate going to mind being the other side on the beam then Royston ?

still havnt got the bumper off Rory yet, lol hopefully get it in the next week :thumb:

Royston
30-10-10, 06:11 PM
is the plate going to mind being the other side on the beam then Royston ?

No I would expect if to be OK, but need to have a look at the set up again, jus toff to troll through the pictureslol

I would be careful when removing the origonal plate, i.e. not to gouge or damage the parent material of the stub axle housing structure;)

Royston
30-10-10, 06:21 PM
Just been looking at Colins pics (I spied an axle pic there)

Origonally the plate will have been welded to the spindle housing and then machined to achieve the correct Camber/toe angle, you will have to look as how you achieve maintain/this!

It will also be difficult to get good welds inside the housing, will need to be tagged into place effectively.

I've been busy doing stuff to the engine bay over last few weeks, refubed the throttle linkage, got my injectors back from being cleaned, quick coat of U-pol gray, fitted them and the fuel rail, dizzy, cap, coil plus a few more bits.

Also got a Sparco brace off Nick J that he painted gray, which matches the stuff iv painted gray.

There Roose motorsport ones, did have a few issue with the set I had but that was down to the injection system, I think there's another slight difference with carbs.

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/040f6bc5.jpg

then took the beam to my mate who shot blasted in and welded the plate on the other side, I then painted it,

got all this for the rear end;

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/bb39369f.jpg

managed to sort genuine handbrake cables and shoes out as well because i not got on well with pattern ones

gave the rear brake back plates a clean up and some paint;

how i left it today

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/21047e62.jpg

will finish putting it all together tomorrow after the drums are dry from some paint

also i have fitted the exhaust system with the red Sport backbox

Will the wheels scrub on the inside now Edd, or is there plenty of clearance?

no there's plenty of clearance, effectively gives me a et41 :)

Edd

The plate I cut off is now welded to the other side so no strength had been lost from that area

Front side is flat so no probs there either, I happy with it all

No updates ATM

Managed by chance to find a local powdercoaters, other place wanted over £100 to do a beam

Waiting to get back, tie bar mounts, tie bars, arb, diff + clutch cover plus some small bits

Also waiting for some driveshafts and alloy top mounts

Once I have all that I can assembly the front end and roll it outside for the first time in months and get some pics

Cheers, need to crack on with it as I've got our house up forsale and would like most of it done before someone buys it and I have to move

I've also dropped two Zender front spoilers out to my mate to be painted

Also given him a GTE boot spoiler to have painted as well, but not sure if to fit it or not ???

Benn

Got this lot back from the powdercoaters the other day

Also had a SR steel done in silver

Thats it for now, hopefully be able to put all the front end back together over next few weeks

Still not got my Zender spoilers and GTE rear spoiler back from being painted but did win a Valeo clutch for 99p on ebay tho :d

I AM NOW PISSED OFF WITH THE CASH GUZZLING,SPANISH ROT BOX !!!!!!!!

Very pissed off with it now , have to remove box, to fit clutch, might fit the other box :tard::wtf:

krobinson
16-02-11, 04:19 PM
Why did you fit the engine and box if it needs a new clutch?

Bad times having to remove the box, :(

Edd
16-02-11, 05:37 PM
There is a clutch fitted but its not new, as i couldnt find a new one at the time of fitting the engine,as i ahve a small garage i needed to fit the engine as box to be able to have space to work round

Just thought id be able to replace it like i have in past times

krobinson
16-02-11, 06:09 PM
I'd just leave it then, if the clutch you fitted was decent, you may never have to replace it anyway :)

Edd
16-02-11, 06:12 PM
im in two minds what to do now

i know the millage on my spare box tho

wish id just fitted it in the first place

scott.parker
16-02-11, 06:28 PM
Edd mate it's always the way with Nova's TBF i would do as Keith said, but thats only as I'm lazy! lol then if it does slip/need replacing you can do it all on the spare box etc then just replace the lot complete, just an idea?

Scott

Edd
16-02-11, 08:08 PM
Now decided to fit the other box as I don't want the lingering thought of 'what the fook is that box' lol

After the driveshaft, then the top mount crap now gearbox stuff, think I'll leave it for a week before doing anymore :(

Graeme
16-02-11, 08:14 PM
Did you say you had some epas pictures to put up Edd? Just picked mine up and want to get started but just doesn't look that easy, more help required please mate

Edd
16-02-11, 08:23 PM
I do have some I'll post them up when I find digi camera

The first thing you need to do is cut/drill spot welds out the lower standard column mount off the shell

Then cut the top bracket off the nova column

Benn
16-02-11, 11:35 PM
I'd leave the clutch in there. If then you wanna change it, lower the engine down and pop the box off.

Sure you need aslide hammer to get the shaft out...

Edd
01-03-11, 08:18 PM
I got the lower spring seats with bearings, the small cup thing on the very top, and the top bush mount with the studs in from Vauxhall

I got a pair of Flo-Flex spring seats

Then the other spacer bits in-between the upper and lower bits I just used old ones as there's nothing to wear out on those bits, just cleaned them up and painted them

Tbh I really need to crack on with this as I've just sold our house and had a offer accepted on another, would really like most of it done before moving.

Got three weeks off work after next week so will have a good go at getting it running at least

Really need to find a new right side ATE caliper tho lol

Update, but small lol

After the nightmare with the top mounts I got new GM stuff and some Flo-Flex spring seats

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/1cc491c1.jpg

Built it all up

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/e537c609.jpg

Fitted some Powerflex bushes to new bottom arms

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/bc7c5648.jpg

Had new bearings and hub all pressed together with painted steering knuckles

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/cc53bc5f.jpg

Tie bar mounts

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/7d5cf00d.jpg

Fitted it all together using new black high tensile bolts ans stainless nuts and washer, also built up the diveshafts I sorted out with new CV's,

excuse the mess tho lol and fook knows why the steering knuckles look red in places in the pics lol

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/691b8a89.jpg

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/631835f1.jpg

Then put brake discs and wheels on but the wheels stick out this far

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/3657bfd8.jpg

Are they going to catch ?

Now it can roll again I can get it outside for the first time in 4 months to work on it better and to take better pics as the last few updates have had crap pics tbh, at least when I move I will have more space to work on it, single garage with a foot either side sucks lol

The rears now clear the arches so it could go mega low on the rear, think I'll chance it on the front, any sign or noise of it catching and I'll get my bodyshop mate to roll the front lips

One bump on them springs to much and they'll hit the arch and dent the wing! They will rub Edd, your kidding your self if you think they may not.

Other than that, looks rather shabby lol

Edd
07-03-11, 08:09 PM
Yeah I know :(

Really not sure what to do about the wheels now ???

I knew I was taking a risk when I got them tbh

A mate who has a mk 1 Golf would take them off my hands but I really want them on there lol

Could fit alloy top mounts and adjustable bottom arms to try and pull them in abit ?????

The only other wheels I would want are the Irmscher wheels that come on Spiders but there very rare

Ahhhhhhhhh one step forward two back lol

Royston
07-03-11, 08:11 PM
Edd, I agree with Mark, 1st corner with lock on in a corner (when it moves under its own power;) ) will wreck the wings:eek: , it will need more than rolling

Why not just get hold of some Vaux spec wheels for the moment, and if needed fit some wheel spacers to the rear if necessary;) .

Alloy top mounts, camber bolts, and adj bottom arms might do it, but what a faff fro some wheels! lol

All looks spanking though mate..

Benn
07-03-11, 10:00 PM
Is it the width of the wheels making the sit so far out? Or the off set?

Roll the lips and pull the arches by hand a bit.. That will give more clearance.
Can you get the inside of the wheel machined to give a better/highter off set?

brainsnova
07-03-11, 10:17 PM
Excellent build, keep up the great work :thumb:

craig green
07-03-11, 10:18 PM
It's the offset Ben. When I looked at them I figured you wouldnt really wanna machine any material from the inner mounting surface, maybe 2mm (tops). IMO the thickness of the casting from the base of a wheel bolt taper to the mounting surface isnt all that generous.

We'll have to get the adjustable TCA's from the other shell we have in storage & obv replace them so that remains mobile.
Definately stick some random rims on it to keep the build moving.

Edd
08-03-11, 07:33 AM
Nice one mate, I'll drop Spud a PM to arrange dropping round his to swap over the bottom arms, good job I still have all the old stuff that was on the Sport in the boot of the Seat lol

I need to pull the wheel in about 12mm for the wheels to clear the arches I reckon, I hoping there's that much adjustabity in the bottom arms

Lot of hassel for a set of wheels I agree, I like a challenge tho lol

LEWI007
08-03-11, 08:13 AM
Ive heard using stainless bolts on suspension etc.. is a bad idea because the material is too strong and when it comes under stress it would snap off, where if it was a mild steel bolt it would bend instead.

Anyone know anything about that ?

Edd
08-03-11, 08:36 AM
I've only used stainless nuts and washers, stainless bolts are a no no yeah, too brittle, I've used black high tensile bolts

AlexW
08-03-11, 10:23 AM
If you move the lower arm in, And then try and get the top in the same amount (Maybe not 12mm overall, but more so if), wont you get the drive shafts bottoming out in the CVs?

Edd
08-03-11, 10:42 AM
Good point :( I hadn't thought about that tbh

But 10/12mm should be ok IMO

This is becoming a real headache, which is slowly pushing me towards giving up at these ET33 off set wheels :(

I think if you move the hub in 10/12mm, it will bottom out the CVs, Even though your not running it that low.

I know the wheels are nice and retro, But The more work you put into fitting these, the more it seems its not a great idea.

I'll have to have a good look at it all on the weekend

Got the alloy top mounts with me today at work, going to mill a bit off them for more adjustabilty

How do people run mega low then ? Surely if I'm bottoming out the CV's there stretching them ? lol

You have some adjustable lower arms to try it with? If so it's worth a go I guess, perhaps combined with a pull on the arch for a little more clearance?

Not convinced all this work messing with the geometry is worth it for some wheels though

Rest of it's looking very clean and nice tho

Edit: Make sure you don't forget to fit nuts on the track rod ends too!

ET33? funking hell! No wonder.

I'd go to a machinest see what they say about taking some off the inside of the wheels..

Those Irmscher wheels have crap brake clearance. What about the Irmscher Spokes? Usually come up cheap on Ebay.de

Edd

That's them off the list then lol

I would also like a set of the Irmscher wheels that look like Astra gte champion wheels but again rare .......

Back to square one with the wheels lol

What are Irmscher Spokes ?
