View Full Version : My version of a 4x4 nova that will get done!
i always read your updates ste,
just dont comment all the time :)
Keep posting pics of both the Cav and the deffo the Nova Ste, for sure !!!
I have too felt like what's the point of posting a update on my Sport after recent events on here.
Fortunately IMO the main cause of the problems in now banned so things should get back to normal.
I for one love seeing a update on this thread, I doubt I'm alone in this, please keep it going :thumb:

sorry guys been so busy lately and with the recent goings on on here with certain events and goings on i have been debating if i should keep updating this thread or not especialy with the cav turbo as it apears not that many are interested and people seem to be very narrow minded lately and question everything if it doesnt seem to be what they would do it must be wrong
so i havent taken many pics and to be fair with christmas coming up and the fact that im short of work lately aswell i just havent done alot
but for those interested i have a small update on its way and i will start updating it regulary again as i am about to start pushing on again as i want the cav back on the road asap as i want the nova shell finished painted and rolling so i can trailer it to pvs
Use the Cav to pull it to PVS.. Win win. Carry on with it dude. Keep the updates and pics coming.
Crack on Ste, you know im more than happy to read updates on the cav or the nova:d

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v65/porter/IMAG0457.jpg?t=1292441169
also sinse i got it my locked transfer box has had a whine so decided that while its out i will pull it apart check it over and send the locking rings to a mate of mine thats going to copy them and water jet cut me some out of ardox which is one of the strongest forms of mild steel comercialy available for the the nova
problem is when i took it apart i discovered why its been whining!
the tit i got the car of instead of locking it properly with locking rings hes just packed it out with clutch rings which has caused it to over heat and the bearings discintergrate so when i opend it up it all fell to bits in my hand
thanks mate what a tit

ste porter
15-12-10, 07:54 PM
it will have the tubby wheels backon it but colour is yet to be decided i was originaly thinking in audi titan grey (all but anthricite) but now thinking hi bright standard silver
Brett's cav looks loads better with silver wheels imo

looking good i love the caliper paint mate nice to see its coming along so well
and vts lock the txb of by adding extra clutch rings i have done a few like this and they have nevr let people down !
if the big plastic ring on the back of the txb ir red its a vts one also if it has 2 breather pipes on the top of it is also a indication its a vts box
hope this helps a little !

Love the cav but I eagerly await Nova updates ;)
thats filthy, at least its getting the love it deserves now
Mr Porter - I was going to comment on why there had been no updates. I read and enjoy the Cav upddates as much as the Nova updates.
but now thinking hi bright standard silver
Definately hi power silver man will suit to a tee:thumb:

its a bodge mate! no offence ment but it realy is.
i also know people that havent had a problem but i also know a few that have its also a reason why alot of people crack the casings on the tx because your using the bolts that hold the casing together as a permenant presure source by pre loading the box with more rings that there is room for to get the required amount of clamping force which is usualy more than what the standard clutch slave cylinder or casing was designed for!
prime example was the fact that i have always been sus of it sinse i refited it not only because of the whine but because it never seemed to transfer asmuch power to the rear as my white one did nomater how hot i got the v/c and now i know why by the fact that the box is riddled with shrapnel from the broken down clutch material from the clutch rings the same stuf that nackered all the bearings
in my opinion if its got to be locked its got to be done in the same mannor mike howards does them with a purpose made locking ring.
like i say mate no offence ment but its not right like that and a transfer box isnt a 2 minute job when fitted in the car to change so i dont fancy doing it again in 3 weeks so it will have locking rings
oh and its defenatly not a vts unless vts use 3 tubes of rtv sealent to seal one crown wheel cover!

16-12-10, 11:04 PM
No offence taken mate !
the trouble is when fitting the metal rings it transfers more pressure to the main diff in the txb if you look at turbodazzs cav turbo which had mikes rings fitted this also gave up the ghost so there is problems both ways i prefere to use the clutch plate rings as it does give a little and also turbodave has run a vts box for nearly 75k and has done trackdays 1/4 miles and daft things like that so there are pros and cons with both set ups at the end of the day the vauxhall txb is really a choclate box and will give up no matter what you do to them ! lol
but keep up the good work i look forward to the next installment

to be honest i have dug my acumulator setup out that was in my white one and im thinking about fitting one of my spare fully working tx boxes and the full standard 4x4 system rather than locking it
the only thing im missing is the bracket that bolts to the bulk head that holds the acumulator update on its way by the way

Cav turbo were designed to be bigmouthed it seems! Good work Ste - is this one ur keeping or doing up to sell?
ste porter
17-12-10, 12:26 AM
the plan is to keep it but if i come across a decent white one then it will be going in spuds direction as i would love another white one
im having this resprayed hopefully just before pvs and i debated having it sprayed white then but seems as its now the rarest colour they did them in with only a handfull left registered in its colour it would be criminal so it will just get a fresh blow over in 13l polor sea blue its current and original colour
great work mate, but seeing that big intercooler poping out the front of that bumper, just makes me want to put a cav bumper on my astra even more, even if everybody else se`s it wont look good :)

the cav was and will be my daily when its back together mate problem was head went porous and im sure you have gathered by now if im going to take a job on i dont do it in halfs so its kinda gone from a head swop to a major overhaul and clean up of all the major components that are a pain to sort once the cars beeing used daily again
plan is to get everything tarted up now that would need the car of the road for more than a day then when its back on the road i will be doing all the other tarty bits like hoses ect as and when
as soon as this is back on the road i will sell the beemer im running about in and start again with the nova

the 2 pics above and the one directly below are of the inside of the vc that was in the bodged and so called locked box i had fitted as you can imagine it shouldnt be black thats because its been over heating as a result of the crap way someone tryed locking it with extra clutch rings

rings from the above vc cleaned up
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v65/porter/IMAG0571.jpg

Coming back to your 4x4 Nova project, I should have those wide arch panels from the Hot Rod Nova arriving on the 8th or 9th January.
My mate bringing them down from Scotland has been delayed with all the snow up there.
I also have some Cavalier parts and a couple of transfer boxes (one of which is a Regal locked box) that may be of interest to you or some of your customers..........

18-01-11, 10:17 PM
rocker cover is finished in wrinkle paint, it does need to be fairly warm to get the effect but an electric heater worked wonders on his rocker cover and my plug cover lol
i left his workshop about an hour ago and he reckoned it was guna be struck up by 10pm......
ste porter
19-01-11, 04:36 AM
just got home!
it runs and like brand new as it should im well impressed
struck up first turn of the key didnt even get 2 complete revolutions and it fired up straight away on all for idleing spot on
tappets clattered like hell for 2 mins then went silent but i was exspecting that as the head has been stood in the workshop for about 2 years
once they settled it was absolutly silent realy happy
4x4 light came on and of as it should tx box bled up well everything is spot on except the abs light is now staying on?
could this be because it hasnt turned a wheel yet?
just got things to tidy up and rear camber bushes to do aswell as the front bumper to go back on and wireing to sort then were done and on with the nova at last
all the pics will be up soon but i cannt be bothered right now as its 4.30 and i want to go to bed but keep your eye on the thread there coming

carbon is my thing the price tag normaly assosiated with it isnt but if you can lay me up a new front bumper and front wings that would be awsome as the abit cracked and damaged in places so i would rather fit new ones rather than repair these if its an option
FG aint to hard to repair unless its totally fooked like. Could more then likely produce wings & bumper from carbon, or kevlar, or carbon kevlar. Being as the donkey works done (ie; making the mould) it shouldnt be to hard like.
Just at the minute, and until this unit comes through, workspace is holding me back :(

Good.
You have been beten to it though fella.
A local fella (4x4nova on migweb) text me yesterday to say his is working and has the rear brakes to do then its off for paint.
Thats a totally differant desgin to this though, using a calibra back end, and a standard XE engine, with a supercharger.
Your floor looks top though compared to his.

its very nicely done mate alot of frame work!! ive tried to keep as much of the nova as possible on mine
that was my original intention but the more i cut away and the more i saw what i was left with the less i liked the idea of just using a rear space frame so thought sod it i can have a flat floor ect aswell while im at it
the way i have gone with this was the strongest and finacialy feasable way of achiving the strength and the type of drive im after while still using vaux parts
trust me i would have done it completly different again and would proberly be done if i didnt want to keep the vaux running gear engine ect
as soon as this is done i have plans for a rear wheel drive straight 6 saloon and having done this one i know exactly what i will and wont be doing to build the next one which i estimate 6 months on plus i will me making jigs for everything for the next one
just need to find time to get cracked back in but im just flooded with work at the min but i am having half hour on it here and there updates soon i promise
lol 21% complete and already planning the next build
looking forward to the updates:)

Oh OK then..
Firstly have you nay idea how much weight you may have added/lost to the shell from a standard nova caged etc?
And i want to know if you have placed the front foot wells in the same place as OEM one's or are they closer back into the cabin etc?
Whats you plan for the foot peddles, any ideas yet, try reuse OEM or go for some custom setup?
And my final one for today is, as you have shortened the inner wings with you semi'space framed front end are planning a upper cross/slam?
And how will the wings be fitted and kept in place near the front part where the space from pipe is?
I just see these thing and think, humm i wonder how etc, but think well maybe your still not sure yet your self, or i just wait to see what you do i guess. lol
(please don't regard any of my questions as negative, there all just things i see and think how do you??)

good questions mate
1. im estimating a total weigh in of just shy of a tonne i posted a video some where earlier on of me picking the shell up with som plyers on a tiny bracket to show how light the shell actualy is now in comparison to a standard nova shell BUT bare in mind i have alot of aditional weight that wouldnt normaly be there i.e rear diff prop ect but on the other hand the weight is more even spread and will have the added bonus of actual moving when you drop the clutch rather than just creating tyre smoke.
2.The bulk head is about 10mm further back but its a different shape to standard reason beeing is to mate up to my required shell tie in points no other reason.
3. oem peddles are well out the window mate so it is and always has been my intention from day one to use floor mounted peddle box with remote res and convert to hydraulic clutch
4.the front end is a little more complicated and hard to exsplain but basicly the wings bumper grill ect will be bolted together on a tubular skelington so to speak and held together with dezus fastners. The skellington will be held to the car by various brackets ect from lower cross member ect out the way and ultimatly the plan is to end up with a normal opening bonnet but a fully removable front end if that makes sense aswell as the added bonus of beeing able to quickly remove individual panels for quick easy access. Theres more to it but all will become obvious when i get there but it will basicly have a lift off (or flip front havent decided yet) front end with the ability to remove pannels individual. The front cross member is not beeing replaced what you see now is the basic outlines of the finished forward chassis but i do mean rought outline
hope that helps although i do feel i havent explained 4 very well but its hard to explaine and english lit isnt my strong point

yes mate when i get hold of some more tube but i havent decided if i should go diagnaly from turret to front leg of the cage or turret to center of dash bar (not fitted yet)?

his majesty says:
its not t45 its erw which is what they make the brisca f1 stock cars chassis' out of so i would hope its strong enough even though its not fia approvable plus its only been used for the door bars and it was all i could get hold of at the time without spending a fortune

Cheers for taking the time to replay mate, the first few questions are answered quite as i was expecting so no more questions there.
As for your front end, Ive been search (just been browsing for 30mins!) for pics of James Austins xe on 45s RWD front flip semi space framed front end car, cant find any anywhere, as this is similar to what yours will be needing, but with the dezus fasten on panels etc, in all mate it sounds a top idea, and i cant wait to see it all unfold, just hope you get the times to build it.

Looks ace that, done some good work there, the welds look cracking too, wish i could weld like that, think weldings one of them things you can blame the tools, not the person, as crap welders produce crap welding i found.
Woooo, go on Ste i thought youd forgotten about this lol
Good to see some more progress on this beasty:d

It sort of gets done when it gets done thing is i keep getting alot of private jobs engine build conversions ect so my free time keeps getting snatched by them plus at the min im back driving again (seasonal unfortunatly) but the eagle eyed will notice come the winter months thats when i tend to be most active in the workshop as the driving dies off
would like the vast part of the structural stufff finished shell blasted and a coat of seal etch primer on ready to start mocking it up so i can sort the body by my birthday (end of september)
also the only reason i sold the cav turbo was so i could get on with this instead of constantly chasing power out of that
now its gone i can crack on

i stood back this afternoon and just looked at it blank and open minded and just thought to myself, Christ i realy have done some welding and i wounder if now the cage is in and tied to the chassis if i cut the nova off if it would still be drivable as a buggie lol.
it doesnt seem alot as its been done abit at a time but it dawned on me earlier just how much i have done and its scary!
well done mate nice to see some more work on the beast, that back end looks really nice, i want to see this at pv next year :)

Are you going to keep the outside standard looking, or will it have to be widearched and everything ?
Just it'd be nice to have an original look, but a really good spec and 4x4, rather than look like a race car, and being a race car lol
Id make it like a standard GSi or GTE or SR or something, thatd be nice.

unfortunatly mate its completly no compramise function over form! i agree it would be nice to look standard but i havent done the hours of head scratching to go over a 100mm wider track front and rear and intending on running somewhere around an 8 or 9 j set of wheels for nothing.
paint work will be fairly plain though with just png urls and possibly a few small ones for the local firm that have been supplying cheap steel other than that it will be sticker free aswell
but then you have the other problem that i have an intercooler a huge rad and 3 oil coolers to house and duct air through add to the fact that the exhaust and screamer pipe are exiting from the front of the car and all of a sudden the front end will also begin to look like swiss cheese aswell.
body work will be what it will be im afraid. i am intending to keep it as recognisable as a nova as possible but again its a needs must situation and if it aint needed its not having it.
