ste porter
12-04-10, 11:28 PM
as burgo and a few others know my green one i have always tryed to keep everything looking as factory as posable with no mods that are obvious and stand out thats why i was going to put a spotless brand new looking gte lump in it so as you can imagine it was a big decision for me to decide wheather to fit a baby valver and take the risk of ruinin the intended factory fitted type styling i wanted

But i think i have managed to pull it of and reading the coments im pleased you got the factory impression i was trying to give thanks guys

Danny s-p
12-04-10, 11:31 PM

Can you not afford to keep it? I fricking love that colour, I wonder who's idea it was that a MK1 would look awesome in it? :P ;)

ste porter
06-05-10, 12:03 AM
cheers sy means alot to hear that a previous owner is impressed with what i have done with it
in regards to keeping it its not money related at all and to be honest i dont think i will get rid its just all it does now is go to pvs which seems a waste to sit in a shed for 11 months of the year but if i dont find someone that wants it and will look after it its no skin of my nose if i keep it

Southie
07-05-10, 06:30 PM
Loving the green one and wish my engine bay looked as tidy, that's the problem with the Mantzel boxes as they make the bay look untidy.

Are you off to billing Ste?

ste porter
07-05-10, 07:00 PM
dont think so but i am doing pvs as usual give me a shout when your leaving billing and drop in and have a nosey yourself if you want im only an hour from billing

Danny s-p
07-05-10, 11:25 PM
thanks mate as i say i wanted an o.e look im glad everyone thinks i have managed it the airbox was a paindo you have any pic of how you got the air box to fit mate

ste porter
08-05-10, 01:25 AM
i cut the bottom of a corsa box level with where the bottom of the filter sits then glassed an acrlic sheet to the bottom to esentialy make the air box flat bottomed and 2 inches deep i then cut the front out and glassed an element from a cut up cone filter in the hole wher i cut the front off
this way i get the induction noise and retain an o.e look to the bay

its the little things like that that you dont see very often because people would rather just throw a cone filter on when they realise a standard air box wont fit rather than engineer a way of making it fit
its the little things like that that give it the factory look and that i am pleased with the most

Adaz_blud
08-05-10, 01:42 AM

14-05-10, 12:11 AM
done a little more today not alot though as i had a full exhaust system to make and fit on a mates nova and a universal back box to put on a 306!

Striped the cav sofa of the 5 stud 4x4 subframe and put the nova on its side and welded all the underneath up

also went and got all the sheet metal for the floor ect and had it cut to size and shape.

also who said it would be heavy? i picked it up on my own and theres not much more structural stuff to go in and yet it took 4 of us to pick a striped gte shell on its side

ste porter
14-05-10, 02:18 AM
theres not actualy that much structural stuff left realy now just rear suspension triangulating it all cage and front engine mount as im not going to use the chassis leg conventional mount im going off the front cross member and a few bits on the front end like moving the turrets out ect other than that its all pannel work then blasting whoop whoop

You dont need to say anything to sound like an advert mate, the speed you crack on with stuffs and the skill of the fab and weld work in this thread alone is an advert for your skill, any gen on a PNG discount then lol

ste porter
14-05-10, 03:01 AM
im sure i can sort something mate lol

thing is if i had a full day every day and the cash just sat in a pile to do it i think i could finish this in about 5 weeks!

im only getting about 6 hours a week at the min if im lucky so i just make the most of what time i get

Spudly
14-05-10, 03:03 AM

This is awesome Ste loving the fast progress/updates but your making it look far too easy. I think you should build another as you'll get bored soon lol

ste porter
14-05-10, 09:55 PM
lol you want one building then mate?

burgo
14-05-10, 10:04 PM
i so want this

ste porter
14-05-10, 10:08 PM
i recon that if someone payed me to build one (instead of going to work) and i had 5 full days a weeki think i could put another one together in about 6 weeks! (shhell that is ready to take an engine box and running gear)

i know where to go with it now what to do and what not to do to make life easier and save time also most of it i have been noting angles, sizes, lengths and dimensions ect so i dont think a shell would take long at all now

ste porter
14-05-10, 10:11 PM
start saving then burgo as once its done im going to run it for a year then sell it to fund a rear wheel drive saloon and the 325 m sport im riding round in at the minute is going to donate its straight 6 and running gear for that one

Southie
14-05-10, 10:15 PM
lol you want one building then mate?
How much APR for one lol

ste porter

i have always been a dreamer joe pmsl
updates shortly the green nova has gone and im of to a kit car show today hopefully to get some bargins and ideas for it eyes peeled progress will start and be very swift again very soon

oh and regards to box used ect if anything its over engineered and if you have to question it imo you havent fully understoods the way its beeing built if its built in the right way the same piece of steel can be made 10 times stronger via triangulation ect also you have got to think about impacts ect because i will stack it at some point
is that grade steel too thin for a kit car?

ste porter

That rear turret looks tricky, you'll need to make sure that is bang on, and make sure the other is an exact mirror of it, and placed correctly to keep the car in a straight line, seams allot of bother really, was there no "essayer" route?

Still looks cracking though.

make sure the other is an exact mirror of it, and placed correctly to keep the car in a straight line

Its trailing arm suspension, wont matter if the strut tops are a bit wonky, wont make a difference to the track.

Although this is Ste, they will be tolerenced by half a mil lol

claire6069
23-06-10, 10:55 PM
the rear turret has no control over the direction of which the wheel is pointing at all its all dictated via the subframe all the turret is is a replacement for the standard calibra/cav spring

do cav springs dictate the toe of the rear wheels?

and its not tricky at all mate hardest part of making them was fitting a new cutting disk in my chop saw lol

also the last pic is of all the bits ready to put the other side together i made all the bits for both sides at the same time so when i get back from work tomorrow an hour down there and i should have a fully rolling 4x4 nova shell

dont mean that to sound arsey by the way just read through it and it sounded snappy sorry
by the way its steve im just logged in on claires at the min

claire6069
23-06-10, 10:58 PM
the other reason for me doing it like that will become obvious tomorrow but bare in mind it all needs sealing off and boxing round and like this i can keep the mounting bolt for the top inside the car because i wouldnt be able to access the top bolt otherwise

surly there are rims available which are like 13's or 15's which are super wide.

just had a look, not a super good tyre i doubt, but available.

besides i have got the room there are down sides to big rims but to be fair 4 tyres at 265 wide and 18 inch should give a good surface contact area and at the end of the day the point of the whole thing is to find the maximum amount of grip and hammer it with as much power as the grip can handle

reason there that wide is because i have got to cut them back to shape when i fit my outter arches as im not using the wide arch kit i got im going to step standard rear quater pannels out by 3 inches

there also that big because i nackered my air shears and couldnt be bothered to disk it down abit more before i did it as i have only got to cut it back more and shape it when i fit the quaters any way

Yeah in additional weight X_X - But fcuk me it'll be stronger than any 5* NCAP sh1te rolled off a modern production line. Welcome to my world…

ste porter
27-06-10, 10:24 PM
i have been asked the weight question so many time now its unreal it will be less than a ton its stupidly light now still people seem to see box section and see weight is a kit car heavy?

i can still pic the back end up on my own and i rolled it on its side on my own and i couldnt do that as a standard shell

it will be heavier than it was before im exspecting around 70 killos more and thats mainly the transfer box and diff thats sgoing to be adding the weight but there is another advantage in that the weight is beeing more evenly distributed across the car aswell

chassis wise i dont think i will be putting in much more than what i have taken out belive it or not

also bare in mind fiberglass wings carbon bonnet fiberglass hatch fiberglass bumpers and seats minimal wiring no extras that arnt needed at all alloy tank light wheels possably fiberglass roof skin no inner door skins the rear inner quaters no longer exist 1 mm floor skins as apose to double skinned shaped 1.6mm standard floor ect ect ect

i think the weight will surprise a few

also best part of 500 horse and absolute minimal traction issues its not going to be slow

bmw156
27-06-10, 10:57 PM
i think the reason i asked about the weight, is that i dont see the point in doing all this great work, to have a car which is heavier then its standard counterpart. i know your doing it for the 4x4 goodness. but why not build a kitcar with 4x4 and have alot less weight.

and as for the metal, i can see alot of metal going in, but then i think people under estimate the weight on normal car floor plans etc.

p.s how many 5kg reals of welding wire have you gone through! welding this car.

keep up the good work :)

ste porter
27-06-10, 11:10 PM
im not on 5kg reels mate im on 20 kgs and i havnt got through 1 yet

in regards to the kit car thing a kit car is a kit car a 4x4 nova hasnt been done and finished in the way that im doing it and using vauxhall running gear to my knowledge

pluss its just my way of taking my car futher than i could before i got to the point where it was a silly spec and only minor things left i could mess with so i decided to take it to a higher level than most wouldnt even attempt to consider doing for various reasons

if you have ever been out in a 300bhp + nova at any sort of speed above about 135 - 140 you would know abit of extra weight realy wont be a bad thing any way

bmw156
27-06-10, 11:23 PM
i do credit you on doing the project, a 4x4 nova will be cool.
the matter of you taking your car further is a good idea, which then rules out the kit car option.

and no i havent been out in any quick novas lol.

p.s im still waiting for someone to make a "z car" nova, where its just a space framed chassis with a complete fibreglass shell.

lol, i often ask my self, why havent "big" things been done to alot more novas, and i think the answer is that they are FWD.

there will always be alot of work getting them to RWD and most people dont want it, or cant do it. and if it was me, i would ask my self, why do it to a nova, start with a better base like a kit car etc etc.

and i guess the people that do it are all nutters lol.

at least your has FWD and RWD when its done lol. the other guy who has the spaceframe nova, stil has his engine in the front!

RWD is the only way forward IMO

Yeah, thats because its the best place for it

RWD is the only way forward IMO

Totally disagree. Rear drive may well be the best way to go on paper, but there is something about fast front drive cars. For a start, you'll never get a rear drive as light as a front drive on two similar sized shells and sometimes that counts just as much as drive layout.

Ive seen many a sorted rear drive track car be completely unable to live with Dar's Nova around combe (and that includes Caterhams), and some of these guys can properly pedal as well.

IMO its horses for courses.

Mustve been a good crack on the Saturday night then? lol

that was the friday mate you dont want to know what we got upto on the sat pmsl

i feel that certain drive types are better suited to certain cars and conditions

my cav turbo was awsome in 4x4 form realy planted and drove so smooth and fluent and silly quick out the bends for a big car but it always felt firm and planted

that said though through the same bends and the same pace theres something so much more satisfing about scrabling around and beeing on the point of no return throwing a front engined front wheel drive car round it

my beemer was the fun one out of all the drive types and even though it wasnt the best to drive when your stairing out the side windows to look in your direction of travel it doesnt realy matter because your grin is from ear to ear any way

1mm mate and its because im s h i t hot lol

it takes forever to weld them in without them distorting bit at a time and keep moving round trying not to heat the span of the pannel the heat around the weld is ok but its when you alow it to get hot enough for the heat to spread the span of the pannel that you get bad distortion.

rule of thumb i go by is that if you rest the base of your hand on the pannel when your welding it when tthe heat starts to get uncomftable i.e when the welds roughly an inch or 2 long its time to move over to the oposite end while it cools down takes ages but you get there in the end

Is the car to be caged also? ive just read the previous posts but i still think it will be heavier than you think, but until its weighed then its a guessing game, will the let transmission cope with the estimated power?

Im not doubting the car buddy, like i said just curious as ive a car which has the same kinda mods, i dont run a let or use a vaux bodyshell.:thumb:

I very much doubt the weight will be an issue, take for example my road car, audi S3 it only has 210 bhp from a 1.8 turbo and it gets to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and it weighs a whopping 1450 kg!!

A nova that will have 500ish bhp and may weigh less that 1000kg will be stupidly fast, my only concern would it may be to light and struggle for grip, but that is an easily overcome problem with huge fat sticky tyres and possably ballast.
To many people write of 4x4 cars as to heavy and to slow of the line, that simply isn't the case.

My own car is 650bhp (cosworth powered) and should weigh in around 1100kg wet 4x4, i no it wont struggle for grip! :thumb: and i also no it will handle properly :thumb: which not all 4x4 cars do!

just because its road legal doesnt mean its a pure road car!

beeing road legal just makes life so much easier for a number of reasons for example testing small changes before a track day attending shows and of corse scaring the crap out of people to the speed limit of corse

i take into acount what your saying my friend but theres so many things you have not taken into mind

better weight distribution across the car
the type of and the quality of the suspension going to be used
the fact that even if it weighed 1200 kg it would still only be as heavy as a ladened gsi with an xe and full of subs
the body will be running alot of fiberglass panneling
then your forgeting component weights i.e wheels seats tanks ect ect which im sure you realise im not planning on using ones made of cast iron

trust me weight is not an issue i would say my flooring and structure work weighs no more than the original skins and floor plan ect thats been removed

yes it will be carrying extra weight of a second diff prop transfer box ect put im afraid if i bin this of its no longer 4x4

pluss you failed to notice the majority of the weight from components i.e seats ect are beeing moved backwards but still forward of the rear wheel track in an effort to further balence the car

trust me it will be fine

ste porter
31-07-10, 03:20 AM
this isnt beeing built to take on thrust at a land speed record atempt its beeing built because i want to have a go at it its different and because i can

the main point is i just want to put the power down which was beeing wasted before if i create a monster its a bonus

im more interested in it beeing capable in all aspects of driving not just of the line or flat out speed and i dont want it to just become a pub figures car where it has the best of everything and is the best car in the world on paper but in reality its useless because all the best components dont work together and renders it a party piece not a performer which i see time and time again

good point updating that now lol

problem is i keep getting side tracked so much with other things i get a few days a month on this

perfect example the calibra turbo i just got hold of for 200 quid i have now got to strip that of its running gear and engine the woosner pistons ect out of that are going in mine mine are going in the block from the calli and that engine will go in my astra van or claires corsa.

Yip thats the one, car is now at AG motorsport (Andrew Gallacher) he will be finishing it, early next year, reyland should have the engine ready to pick up soon.

Lots and lots of cash gone into it lately, brief = 6k on diffs, complete wrc front and rear setup inc alloy uprights, bladed roll bars, pectel monitor setup, lots of carbon, escort wrc 3way proflex, list goes on!

Ste,

Will the transmission in the nova be standard?

Off topic what uprated stuff is available for the 4x4 let system?

ste porter
01-08-10, 01:30 PM
define standard? if you mean standard nova no
im using the 6 speed f28 with the bigger of the 3 transfer boxes with the standard rear diff which is the same as the holden commadore for starters
obviously the transfer box is beeing buggered about with as in its beeing locked and i know someone who can put a stronger v.c in

im going to suck it and see with a standard box for now but i have a spare which i may look into having built up to a decent spec

no matter what i do with the 500 bhp mark the vauxhall 4x4 system will always be a weak link 1 way or another its just going to be a learning curve finding ways of improving it as and when it shows its self up as a problem

just to let you all know that this hasnt been burried just slow as of late as i have just got another cally turbo for breaking for peenuts and been at work alot but things are happening just not on the shell

got a few bits for my engine pluss another spare let so that will shortly find its way into a work horse

made a start on my new inlet got another set of steel rods got an actual let block not xe converted like i had before spec on engine as a rough guide so far goes like this

woosner low comps
eagle steel rods
acl mains
acl big ends
...arp 2000 rod bolts
arp head stud
oil squirters
block girdle
steel oil pump gear
ported head
reshaped combustion chambers
all new valves
cometic multilayer head gasket
double valve springs
custom plenum
custom made exhaust manifold
t70 turbo with custom machined housings on the hot and cold side for required a/r
40mm external gate
dta s40 pro
als maps (whooooooooosh bang, bang ba bang)lol
launch control
full throttle gear change
lightened fly and 7 1/4 ap paddle clutch
aiming for 450 - 500 at about 32psi !!!

there is alot more but that should give you a rough idea thats the bits i have so far only reason i have put the shell aside and started on engine for time beeing is because i now have 2 lets and a shed full of parts so i basicly want to have a sort through build up a standard let for the van build up the mental one for the nova ans sell all my spares off

ok, a question, why have you got trumpets inside the plenum?

this is such a broad subject and to be fully honest i dont fully understand it myself but i do understand the basics so the easiest way of putting it without getting myself all confused goes something like this

air under vacume i.e na moves in a completly different manor to air under presure i.e forced induction as a result the same inlet fitted to an na and a fi engine will can give massive cylinder presure and flow differences between each bore. air under presure follows the path of least resistance (basicly but there are other deciding factors but keeping it simple for now) so in an effort to smooth out presure differences across a common plenum the plenum should be tappered angles ect differ from engine to engine and trumpets should be added to help even out the flow.
