proper job dude, were you worried about it bending on the spit? lol
i wanted to put it on a jig months and months ago but i was concerned that untill i got abit more structure in there that if it flexed and i started welding it while its flexed im screwed lol
to be honest it seems ok as it is at the min the ideal time would have been after the cage has gone in but i needed it over before then to put the structure in for part of the legs so its catch 22
one thing i will say though its going to make painting and sealing the underneath a dodle

you proberly see half the story mate but not the whole book;)
the veccy was put together ok by someone who is ok with cars in general but not vauxhalls specificly if you get me and over a period of time its had more and more people look at it that have less and less idea untill it got to the point where its just done his head in and resulted in a car in desperate need and a loom on the verge of turning the car to a pile of ash!!!!

Thats a nice wee update! Are they old Roll cage parts?
One thing Ive never understood is how you go about sorting the gear linkage/selector position inside a car when converting to RWD/4WD, do you convert or get a box/linkage etc from RWD??

i originaly planed to use 5 stud conversion hubs then i thought about using full cav legs but after a little more thought suspension options are limited due to design but im now looking down another route but more on that as i get there as i may change my mind again by then
That's some crazy shizzle !! lol
Do you have anything written down regarding a plan of action ? Or is it all from the mind ? lol

i have alot of diagrams drawings notes ect of measurements from before i started but as for the fab work its been fairly fly by wire and for a good reason.
i had a good idea of what i was after and what i wanted to create ect but when you start chopping the more you chop the more everything you have to work with changes ect
my first plan was to keep most the original forward floor and to be honest i proberly could have if i wanted 200 horse and no more
the problem was that im aiming for silly power and crazy punishment in regards to the way it will be driven and to be honest when i choped the rear floor out i wasnt happy with the strength of what was left so i had a rethink.
thats where my plans that i drew up came from and thats what i have worked for obviously adapting ect as i go
i posted my original drawings early on and i think i have stuck fairly close to them realy

in a word, no, the stiffer it is the more you can work with the actual suspension geometry and it's movements, F1 cars are built with a tolerance of 4mm at the wheel centres under use, i.e up to around 7g under braking.
Just flicked through your whole project looks smart mate!! Fair play to you keep it up!

I know what you mean but F1 cars are rwd and not 4wd so the drive from all 4 wheels will have to be very accurate or all 4 wheels will be fighting against the tarmac more due to the ridgity. Only car I can compare Stes nova too is a T16 205 but not sure if they were spaceframed.
Sorry if I sound like a numpty but just trying to get my head round it all.

Same deal... the suspension should decide how hard/soft/grippy the setup is on a proper car, 2wd, 4wd, front rear or middle not how much like jelly the shell is.

wow this is an awsome car but all those steel bars . . . aren't they goin 2 make it heavy.
I've just had a quick read thru it all and thought similar, its fairly agricultural looking with all the box section, sure it'll all come together ok tho.

in regards to the weight i will take a pic later as i can happily and easily still lift the front of this with 1 arm to head hight i have stressed it time and time agin over various stages of the build i dont think you realise how light this is.
its holow box section with 3 mm wall thicknes on the large rear frame and its 2mm on the 25 x 25 not solid bar! a man at the back and a man at the front and this can now be lifted to head hight so hardly heavy
i think that alot of people realy underestimate how much i have removed steel wise. what you see on a nova floor plan is 1 skin and what i underestimated was the sheer number of skins in the floor ect.
in some parts the steel in the floor where about 5 skins come together is about 8 mm thick and an 8 mm steel plate in comparison to a length of box section is bloody heavy!
the best way for people to realise this is if you see it for yourself and anybody local is more than welcome
it will be heavy when complete in comparison to its former striped form but im estimating only by about 200kg. This will be mainly due to the adition of indipendant rear suspension set up, rear diff, prop, and transfer box
so yes when done it will be heavyer but in its current state i belive its proberly lighter to be honest
also dont forget the weight its gained will be better spread and more balanced across the car and the 4x4 will be making up for the massive traction loss isues i had in front wheel drive
so any disadvantages in regards to weight will be far out weighed by the gains and advantages made by the 4x4 system handling and the magic 500 hp mark im aiming for under the bonnet
fair play mate :) to be fair any car with 500bhp and 4 wheel drive is guna be quick, but this thing is guna be bloody ballistic :)

Some seriously good work there Ste. I'm not convinced about the use of Cavalier/Calibra suspension as it's geometry isn't as good as the Nova. I remember the ads that said they had "Safety Understeer built in". You mean crap geometry!
I'm sure that you can re-work the front end to get shot of the inherent bump steer and over-zealous ackerman angle that plagues that chassis.
The Astra/Cavalier/Calibra steering rack height and connection half way up the strut is half of the problem, where the Nova's low rack and hub setup allows for a better "helm control".
If it were me, I would have used alloy for the floor - but steel for the prop tunnel. But then again, I'm always looking for some weight saving!! Ounces = seconds!!
Like the idea of 18" boots, it opens you up to some serious track rubber - that's where all of the development is these days. GT rubber is all 18".
Keep it up, I'm looking forward to the final result.
Now where's the guy with the spaceframe XE powered car gone - he's been very quiet lately.

for an iva mate an ally floor ment a pot rivet every 40mm and i didnt fancy turning my floor framework into swiss cheese
the understeer built in is due to the active 4x4 not the indipendant rear as such.
when you brake the 4x4 disengages and causes you to enter a bend in basicly front wheel drive which in turn causes understeer
the rear suspension with camber adjustment bushes fitted to both mounting points on the rear arm adds massive levels of adjustment in all directions and aspects
also im locking the box so it will be permenant 4x4 and upping the torque bias in the viscous coupling so upto 350lbs per foot of torque its promenently rear wheel drive the further above that fiqure the more thats sent to the front

i completly agree mate but theres alot that dont also what i keep stressing but nobody seems to take any notice is that the weight balence is going to be alot more even than what any striped nova could ever dream of other than dumping quater of a ton of lead in the boot
This is a stupid question mate but with the locked transfer box is it posable to run RWD only? Or say bias the power to the rear ie 70-30 split?

( this isn't a suggestion but a question as you are up to speed and I'm not)
no mate the locked part in the box is the 4 wheel drive engagment its normaly controled by a clutch system run of the power steering and controled by its own ecu
im bining this like i have in my cav turbo and replacing the clutch system with locking rings so its permenant 4x4
the power split is goverened by a viscous couplin and basicly its a load of plates very close together emersed in a synthetic fluid the hotter the fluid get the thicker it becomes. The thicker it becomes the more friction is created and the more the discs bind which inturn sends more power to the rear
what alot of people dont know aswell is that the rear diff is actualy a slightly different ratio to the final drive in an f28 deliberatly to cause this to heat up
problem is if it gets to hot the discs break down and the coupling goes bang which is why they have temp senders as standard so if it gets to hot it disengages the 4x4 to protect the box
problem is im locking mine so i wont be able to do that but what i am doing is fitting a thermostat controled oil cooler so at a certain temp it will switch on an electric pump and circulate the oil through a cooler to keep the oil at a desired temp
this is also why i have decided to put my hand in my pocket and buy a qrew transfer box aswell

it will be heavy when complete in comparison to its former striped form but im estimating only by about 200kg. This will be mainly due to the adition of indipendant rear suspension set up, rear diff, prop, and transfer box
so yes when done it will be heavyer but in its current state i belive its proberly lighter to be honest
also dont forget the weight its gained will be better spread and more balanced across the car and the 4x4 will be making up for the massive traction loss isues i had in front wheel drive
so any disadvantages in regards to weight will be far out weighed by the gains and advantages made by the 4x4 system handling and the magic 500 hp mark im aiming for under the bonnet
you should be called the nova doctor :thumb:
Incredible Building there, really can't wait to see this thing go!
ste is it possible to make a mount which goes to both the front crossmember and chassis leg?? im just thinking it will be incredibly strong and stop the engine trying to twist itself out of the shell

thats what im looking at doing mate hence why im going of the lower set of holes on the block and i will then fit a stabiliser near the top at the rear to prevent rock

when its on its solid which im real pleased with just got to get the chassis brackets fully welded on tomorow
also got to finish welding the mount its self together add a webing between the 2 bits of box and shape it
need to get a pair of poly bushes for a cav or astra for it as the bushes are from a pair of old cavalier arms so i can of the shelf poly bush them which is a bonus

What was the reason for the lower engine mount ? Had problems with the origional position in the past ?
Is there a cage going in ? If so, how come you didn't install the front 1/2 of the cage then build the rear of the car (subframe mounts / shock mounts ect ...) as an integral part of the cage ?
Not trying to sound negative at all, just interested as to how / why you've gone about things the way you have, top project, sure it'll all come together well.

lower engine mount was to solve turbo clearance issues mate that was all
as for cage yes theres a monster of a cage going in reason beeing is im working from what may aswell be a large garden shed with little or no access to industrial machinery such as pipe benders mills lathes cnc's ect. everything you see has been me a grinder welder and drill and little more.
Its far easier for me to work with box section ect than what it is tube so thats why its been done like that mate for ease of working with it more than anything else
please remember im a lorry driver not a cnc machine operator that can just nip to work and cut mill lazer turn what ever i need everything is done the hard way by hand
far easier to measure cut work ect with box than tube when you have limited tools available
my cage i will sort the angles ect and run my pipe up to an engineering place about 20 miles from me and get him to put the main bends in it other than that it will all be notched with a grinder no fancy 100 quid tube notchers here unfortunatly

Its not folk moaning about stuff, its just that their asking questions about the way things have been done and the reasons he's done them, what seems obvious to one person might not be very obvious to another, its good to see a few answers on whats been done so far, i admit that a few questions might come across abit negative but i know i'd rather read a few questions and get some genuine answers rather than the usual posts by folk ... 'dis iz gonna be da best Nova eva' 'your da best welda eva' ect ... !! lol
Theres not many folk have access to all the gear, and alot of folk can do a hell of a lot with a grinder and welder, i'm sure he's thought it all thru but you never know, a few folk questioning him might help him along the way with a few things.

sleeps for normal people i just rest when my body say no more lol
in regards to the mount it was another case of now i have the forward facing part on do i add another part or not do i dont i ? yeah sod it everything else is over engineered why not lol
theres one important thing about the build and its always the first thing and the last thing on my mind with every last bit of the build
ok that will do the job at 200 bhp and ocasional blasts
but will it be reliable again and again and again at 500 poneys and nothing but constant hammering.
If the anwser is no then it either gets done again or beefed up until im happy!
when this thing is dead and rotting i want what i have added to still be in one piece long after the original nova shell has rotted from under it!
mate of mine has hit the nail on the head realy
designed like a volvo built like a westfield and going to get driven like a nova!

Hi Steve
How are you getting on with the 4x4 nova, I have been building one for the last 10years from a nova sport I bout when I was a kid. Am finally getting paint on it this weekend. all the welding done finished shell blasted and primed,
I guess about another year and it should be good to go..
I am looking for some very early nova bumpers (sport type) for it, any ideas where i can get some??
looking good ste, some cracking work going on,will be one quality nova when done, keep up the good work, will be keeping a good eye on this

Looking at your pictures makes me embarassed about my frankentsein like welding skills. Top skills on display indeed.
how come you welded the plate on without making the hole for top mounts?
are you going to drill it while its on the car?
ste porter

how come you welded the plate on without making the hole for top mounts?
are you going to drill it while its on the car?
3 reasons
a) if i drill that plate so it works out to the car and then weld it in and its wrong or moved in relation to the the other strut im nackered
b) if the turet is a few mm out bent ect over the 20 od years its had abuse and hammer and i make it the same way i did the other side when i fit it it will be wrong again
c) i have had a complete change of plan in the way in which my top mounts are going to be mounted and they may require completly different shape holes and mounting points so if i leave that one for now i have only got one side i have got to try and change to suit

tbh for what that is, I'd get some plates of varying geometry made up by an engineering place etc. I have an issue with any adjustment made like that, in it's possible to slip, which although fixable with serrations is always a risk regardless. The worst aspect imo, is you will never set that exactly correct on both sides down to 0.x of a mm like you can with a plate you KNOW is of the correct dimensions and tolerance.

Thats the whole point of using top mounts of 360 degree alignment mate
when its done take it to lovels body shop i want that lazer aligning ect please
thank you very much
it doesnt matter if one side needs to be at max adjustment one way while the other is near central to make it run and drive straight and true
thing you forget mate is were not talking about a brand new shell built from tollerences of a few tho of a mill were talking about a 20 year old shell thats had 3 diferent engines been hammered to hell bounced of kerbs rotted and had various repairs
its ok having precision made plates that are fixed position and alow no adjustment but if there welded into the legs in exact symetrical positions and you take it up the road and find that over time the legs have moved theres nothing you can do
i have taken every care and measurement i can to ensure the legs are exact but as i found when i measured up before i started the passenger leg was already out from where it should have been by 8mm! and thats alot in terms of degrees in geometry at the wheels
Ste,
Just finished reading the whole thread, really interesting even though I haven't the foggiest about most of the stuff.
Are you going to have the front end as a one piece mould?
How many hours are you up to now on the clock?
Is there somewhere I can put my name down for a passenger ride?
What is so special about the Qrew transfer box - I remember something about it from a couple of years a go but can't find the link.

Thanks for showing interest mate in fact that applys to everyone else aswell its the interest from you guys that keeps me on track and adament that im going to finish it
in regards to the front end and any parts of the project that i havent got to mate im going to keep to myself for now and its not for suspense or anything like that.
Reason beeing is because i have all these ideas and when i get there somethings not exactly how i planed it so things change all the time for one reason or another so rather than build everyone up for no reason would rather reveal it all as and when its happened
Hours wise to be honest not as long as you think i would estimate about 150 hours not much more than that. when i have a day on it i only usualy get about 6 hours on it so thats about 25 days at 6 hours
obviously its not always 6 hours sometimes 2 other days 8 but average about 6 hours mate
passenger rides are 15 pounds up front now and non returnable in the even of non completion or death in testing stages lol
qrew boxes are complicated mate best way of putting it is the weakest parts are replaced with stronger items which make the boxs alot stronger more reliable and biase more power to the rear

more power to the rear? thats gonna be interesting to watch with your 'unique' driving style lol top work mate, cant wait to see this finished
Put me down for a ride in it :)
ste i think you misunderstand mark, or maybe not and ive come up with another idea lol.
i understand he meant that you can have a number of different plates made up which give you certain different geometry set ups. say you want different camber you just bolt in a different plate.
ultimately a lush solution, alot of work involved though

Wouldn't that be alot of hasle? when you Want to change geometre you'd have to work out which plate to use etc. Doesn't an adjustable top mount let you change camber and geometre without changing anything, you just re adjust to where ever suits?
I'm probable wrong as still learning :)
ste i think you misunderstand mark, or maybe not and ive come up with another idea lol.
i understand he meant that you can have a number of different plates made up which give you certain different geometry set ups. say you want different camber you just bolt in a different plate.
ultimately a lush solution, alot of work involved though
Exactly that... how all the adjustment is designed on simps, doesn't even have to be a lot of work if you do it right.
Ste is saying he can't work with original dimensions etc though, as it will all be slightly out.
ste, paypal for moneez for a ride please cheif!

I'm probable wrong as still learning :)have you ever done four wheel alignment on a car? takes at least an hour and then the adjust-ability can still slip.
each of the plates would be stamped as to what geometry it gives then is a simple case of swapping them which could be made easy and quick if designed right

no I never have.

I see what you mean, just alot of work to begin with but after that should be pretty straight forward to set up / adjust :thumb:

It's not, because you don't measure all the plates, just calculate it, start off with a set size, measure the geometry, rest can be worked out from the lengths of struts etc.

i see what your saying guys but basicly all it will end up in is an adjustable top mount again will it not? difference is to set it up instead of moving it where you want it and locking it off you would have to check it dismantle half the suspension and reasemble and check again ect seems like a pain in the **** in comparison to using these top mounts
pluss fixed mounts are ideal if you can guarentee both sides are exactly symetrical to within half a mm and i cant so to identical plates could give different geometry from side to side even though the plates are exact. hense again the beuty of these you dont set them up so there in the same positions you adjust them untill your geometry is perfect compensates for any design intollerences so to speak
again like i say please dont forget although they look new ect the legs are designed to be in the same places and are only as exact as what the rotten legs were! like i say i know its not the best way to correct it but they are the easiest way on this project to ensure its geometry is bang on and can compensate each wheel individualy for and screw up on the fabbing side of things
the type im looking at do exactly the same as what your talking about but can be adjusted ect as and when and can be adapted to lock using small roll pins once the geometry is set
i agree and if it was a precision designed chassis fabricated on the floor to amazing tollerances then i would defenatly prefer the idea of set plates but please dont be fooled my shell isnt at the end of it its still structured around a 20 year old spanish built nova!

Have you insomnia Ste lol As ever your works outstanding, love it but feel sorry for Claire as she must be lacking some loving lol
lmao i would rep you southie but it says i need to spread some around before giving it to you again lol
Ste, i think those adjustable plates are perfect.
seen plenty of touring cars with those type.
and mk999 they will never shift an inch as the pressure is all pushing upwards and not sliding left to right if that makes sense.
keep up the great work ste.

Until your doing some serious cornering speeds...
and mk999 they will never shift an inch as the pressure is all pushing upwards and not sliding left to right if that makes sense.
Pretty sure the people teaching me know what they're on about tbh.
Resolution of forces says otherwise too, if you want it in black and white.
ste porter
22-10-10, 03:59 PM
there will be alot of force acting on these mounts in all directions that is for sure but the point is are these forces going to be enough?
im going to try them any way as they apear to be the standard that all the d1 drift boys ect head towards and they dont report any major problems.
at worst say they do slip it means i got to move it back to where it was roughly and have it aligned again its not going to be the end of the world as im not going to use it every day as a shoping car
i like the input and i have taken on board your concerns guys but seriously i feel that this is going to be the easiest and best way to tackle the problem of alignment isues
and lets face it if over the whole project thats going to be my only concern im laughing dont you think

yes mate it is slightly but thats because i have made my own mount from scratch rather than a kit all will be clear when it all gets final assembaly as to why all the mounts have been done the way they have but they are the way they are for a reason.
they could have all been normal mounts but its far easier to fab different mounts than it is to route awkward boost pipes and exhaust ect

that is probably the muckiest engine i've ever seen
thats mainly because the rocker cover gasket split a few days before it came of the road
that hole. ismnt it for reverse switch? and wow thats real full of mayo. how long was it run like that?
on an f28 mate the reverse switch is on top the box near the selector and the ident switch is underneath the hole has defenatly been smashed into it at some point but its odd as it looks like it was made from the inside out but by what i have no idea
as for the mayo it was flushed only 5 days ago with a proper agent for cleaning the system after gasket failure then refilled with fresh coolent as i tryed the porus mod. 5 days later and sbout 50 miles and i got the coolant level light come on checked the header tank and it was solid with the stuff again so i think all i managed with the head and porus mod was to make it worse
Thats some nice goopy stuff there Ste, stop mincing about with the engine and get those horrid fecking wheels off, btw just to settle a discussion with Rob, what size are ya voodoo's?

got abit more done also when i brought the cav the guy i got it of lived about 5 miles from AP racings develpment center and claimed that they had used the cav as a development car for a clutch kit for the f28/c20let and it had had about 4 clutches fitted and tryed on it free of charge
I just thought yeah yeah as you do but it apears he may well of been telling the truth.
The hole in the gearbox after we cleaned it all up was obvious that it wasnt a smashed hole but a cleanly drilled hole in just the right place to inspect the clutch
when we split the box from block low and behold theres an ap clutch and writen on the cover plate in marker pen was Revision 4 batch 1 prototest and on the other side a load of random letters and numbers part number?
same on the friction plate.
so it apears that it may have been ap that made the hole as f28 boxes dont have an inspection cover and the old bloke i got it of was telling the truth. Bonus
Any way some pics of todays progress

if so the rubbers are going to be replaced
if you notice the mounts apart from the front drivers are all vx standard parts so will be easy to upgrade to solids and the rubbers in the drivers side are cavalier front arm rear bushes so they will be replaced with polly bushes and all new bolts ect mate on final asembly

sorry for the thread hijack , but the cvh engine had a poxy breather filter near the inlet manifold that was supposed to get changed every service (iirc)... my missus bought a mk3 escort that started running really crap with mayo in the rocker cover etc.... but the fluid levels were ok, i found the breather was blocked, and the little vac pipe to the inlet manifold was blocked solid with engine sludge... £3 fix.

I was just mentioning it as the mounts use a single bolt and in some cases drilling out one of the exisiting holes means the engine will sit slightly different.
Is cool though.
is there a engine spec anywhere ? are you using a locked transfer box ?

the mounts were fabed from scratch mate well the steel parts any way hence why there all in different places as i wanted the deivers side lowered ect hence why i used the lower mounting holes that are used on an aircon mount for a cav turbo
in regards to single bolt there not there twin in a way as theres 2 chassis mounting points on the drivers side mount it shouldnt be a problem as i have got an engine stabiliser going on the top aswell
yeah transfer box is beeing locked mate and the VC is having work done and a different type of fluid so it transfers 300 - 350lbs of torque to the rear same as the qrew boxes. was looking at just using a qrew box but there best part of 2k and you strugle to get hold of them
found out how its done ect and had a word with a guy that does gearboxes at a comp spec level and he claimes it can be sorted real easy and fairly cheap in comparison

sorry guys been so busy lately and with the recent goings on on here with certain events and goings on i have been debating if i should keep updating this thread or not especialy with the cav turbo as it apears not that many are interested and people seem to be very narrow minded lately and question everything if it doesnt seem to be what they would do it must be wrong
so i havent taken many pics and to be fair with christmas coming up and the fact that im short of work lately aswell i just havent done alot
but for those interested i have a small update on its way and i will start updating it regulary again as i am about to start pushing on again as i want the cav back on the road asap as i want the nova shell finished painted and rolling so i can trailer it to pvs
