View Full Version : My RWD C20XE Chevette build
ok, so i decided to start this build. i picked up an XE of burgo and am working towards getting it good. basically going for the big kit of migweb (£450) but getting it of ebay as its a tad cheaper. should get the engine to a good state.
head needs to be skimmed. and some other small bits of work.
just gonna run standard power, maybe a set of fast road cams and a good exhaust manifold.
after ages of trying to decided between, injection or carbs i choose carbs. for a few reasons, i have always wanted a set of 40's or 45's. i love carbs. and there is less wires everywhere so thats all cool. and also i will get away with low emisions. so i am looking for either a set of 40's jetted and choked to the max, or a set of 45's down choked/jetted.
then, im gonna run mega jolt for ignition to make it simpler.
what car, im unsure yet, im keeping my eyes open. but something 70's/80's rear wheel drive. i will make the XE fit in. use a coverter bell housing and then probably a type 9 gearbox and then custom propshaft and then the cars standard rear diff etc. i am loving the viva's, chevetts and early cav's
should be awesome once i have done and a quick toy for me to enjoy

ok so got it on the engine stand and just had a quick fit together to see how it all looks, im liking it.

i know the inlet cam is wrong lol, was just playing about.
no more pics atm, but the head has been stripped of the valve stem seals. and is bare now. going to get it skimmed soon to get rid of the pitting on the bottom side, to make sure it isnt warped and so it makes a good seal with the head gasket.
cleaned up the block, stripped it totally. both faces are good and im gonna buy a honing kit, so i can lighlty hone the bores and remove the slight lip at the top of the bores.
i measured the crankshaft and its all good and not gone oval, and with the shells it looks good. the shells are being replaced btw.
so for now, im concentrating on getting the engine good, while keeping my eyes open for a set of delorto's ( main reason over webers is the dellortos are better for road driving) a cool shell for the Xe to go into and a few bits for my XE, rocker cover, calbelt cover and maybe some fast road cams.
get the pistons pocketed and run some decent lift cams be good to go then.
will have sump ready to go this week too, im flat out trying to get an XE mini finished for 2moz!!:mad:

sump????? as in rwd sump? and martin there is 2 mk1 cavs near you on ebay, one is £200 and has mot and the other is 99p but needs work. the mot'd one is better for a conversion mate. due to gearlever hole etc.

in a mustard colour. im watching it pal.
but atm, im not really looking out for cars, as a mate is getting a van soon, and he has a trailer and he's not afraid to travel to get cars. so when hegets a tow vechile, i will start looking.

kool mate, any mk1 cav gen just pm me. have ya thought of a manta? cheap and the later ones are injection so easier to do. just that they rot more lol. but then all cavs disolve badly....

just a small update, i have bought a honing kit, and a valve lapping tool and some paste
the head is being skimmed tomorrow. £32.50, which i thought was a fair price.
then i will have a good clean up of the head. and assemble it.
and im gonna start buying service bits for the engine, like gaskets etc etc

you dont need the steel head gasket complete waste of time, use your old oil pump (check the gears are ok and fit a nylon relife valve) and buy a complete cambelt kit is not worth the risk.
im sure you could buy all the parts your self cheaper from sbs and auto vaux

see i dont wanna reus my oil pump incase its over used etc. bt as you say, check it etc.
and i know the tensioners are brand new, so im just gonna buy a cambelt. and yeh gonna start looking at autovaux.
also i am gonna get a tripple layered head gasket, as my head is on the limit because its been skimmed, so it will hopefully get the compression back to somewhere normal and it should stop some valve/piston love making

the steel gaskets are no thicker than a standard one mate, jut check your oil pump i would rather use that than a pattern part one any day !!!

just for the record a new gm oil pump is £197 on it own plus the vat from auto vaux i darent even ring vauxhall lol
Ok, i got paid, so the head has been sent away to be skimmed and i am getting it back tomorrow night, the guy said he couldnt take away all the pitting, but it will be ok.

just waiting for it all to turn up.

also, been looking into the oil pump situation,
and think im just gonna measure my one and then fit a relief valve as mentioned above from SBD, their code is OS-NV-1-K and price is 49.95 which i dont think is to bad, because if my gears are ok, and i fit this for 50 quid, it saves me buying a aftermarket one for 50 quid.

they say to measure them iirc but i dont have that book they all follow so i just replace them, no need for arp if you dont want to rev the tits off it but they are a small insurance lol

it was pitted, thats why i got it skimmed, and it has lost alot of the pitting, but some still remains. the guy who skimmed it said it would be fine as long as it doesnt go into the seal ring.

ok, got through a cold running thermostat, 82 deg rather then 92 deg.
a baffle plate with bonded gasket.

nah, im going for RWD, i saw mikes corsa, but as i said i want something which started out as RWD, like a mk1 cav or something from that era.
go get a morris marina, ital, or trumph dolomite, or hilman avenger.
i have been looking at the dolmites and they are going quite cheap. up to about 500 quid. and will have a look at the others.

tbh tho it doesnt matter what i buy, i will just cut in a type 9 box, and make the rest fit lol .
i wouldnt bother with a type 9, just use a r25 from an omega. far cheaper, and bolts straight up.

yup. they go for £30 up. just get the gearlever housing, and the prop and get it cut and welded.

also cleaned up all my valves and seats ready to go back into the new head, i know they should all be numbered and go in where they came from, but i got them like this.

also gonna look into getting my head steam cleaned for ultra freshness lol
and then im gonna lap in the valves and be away.
it is very rare that you will use all the gaskets so dont be to worrried if you have some left.

already checked, they are metal and have casting marks on them,
if they are plastic, do they break alot im guessing....
They can break, also seen the whole propeller come lose. so when you speed up it starts slipping on the shaft.. Either way way are poo.

ok so i got some more parts through and have began to lap in the valves, baring in mind i have never done this befor i think its going well. my mate told me, when doing it the surface should go dull and im happy the surface has gone dull, picssss

the bottom left one is the one which has been lapped, note the shiney ness of the right side one and the dullness of the left one.

and then build up that one, with new stem seal.
a few questions:
the stem seals, should they go right to the bottom and stop the bottom spring plate moving. or should there be a gap and allow the plate to move.
and
my spring compressor. seems to hit the side of the head, and wont allow it to compress ( i could do the end one, from end on, which gave me more room) so what should i do about this? is this a common problem.

yeh i read this before, how do you get them apart, as i had a go at pulling the middle bit out but it wouldn't budge.
and the ones i have had surface rust on the outside and i am probably gonna replace them. and just soak the new ones in oil.
Tap them down wards on a bit of rag on a bit of wood, will hurt your hand doing it but they will pop out.

you have never cleaned them properly before then, by pushing the ball in the tappet which is sprung loaded, if the ball dosnt pop back out its ****ed :p
I've cleaned maybe 4 sets and they've all sprung back out. Takes a bit to break a spring (guessing there a spring inside them)
ok so i ordered some more bits for the engine from QED (great service btw)
some new water pump bolts, exhaust studs and cam cap nuts. and also some stretch bolts for the main bearings.

any tips on fitting the exhaust studs, im guessing i should tap out the holes so they dont have any crap in there, but what about making sure they are tight, should i wind a nut right down to the blank on the stud and then make sure the stud is tight that way?
and does the long end or short end go in, im guessing short.....
short side in with some loctite and double nut the stud because if wind a nut to the shoulder it will tighten up on the shoulder before it tightens up in the thread.
and what are those nyloc nuts for? hope there not to hold the cap caps down?

yeh benn told me i could of got them cheaper from VX, i was buying some bits from QED as it was and just got these bits as well.
and yeh they are nylocs for the cam caps.

seems a pretty shody replacment imo, that seems pretty mad tbh. im sure that litlte pieces of nylon would do the engine the world of good lol
imo bmw156 i would use standard bolts and washers, if you dont have enough pm your address and i will send some over mate

ok so cracked on today with some work,
put in my new exhaust studs, will get a pic sometime lol. using the double nut method, worked great.
and also as my stupid spring compressor was to small i made some small adjustments to it.

i also won a set of cams and a set of pistons and con rods of ebay, all standard stuff. so they should be cool. now i can finish of the head, and stick it in a box lol.
also today i was researching what cars have had redtops put in them, and found a triumph dolmite, vauxhall vista and a opel kadette. some good WIP's on them and it inspires me.
also doing some reading up on the gearbox side of things as well. there are afew i could go for.
IIRC omega RWD: big and bulky but takes big BHP
opel manta 1.8 will take up to about 200 bhp, but rare.
the type 9 ford box, readily available and loads of uprated parts for the internals.
type 5 box. takes bigger BHP then the type 9
so i think its still gonna be a type 9 box, for the future possibilities

Head studs are for people that remove the head every week as the bolts don't stretch as much so they can be reused. Where you'll be bolting it on and leave it alone for a good long time...
lol, yeh i edited my original post to say exhaust studs
ok done some more work on the engine today after work.
had to do some more modding to the valve tool as it was just to small still. so it will fit now.
and had a bit of time, so cleaned up the oil pump. and stripped it to check the tollerances. now im not sure what the gaps are meant to be, but i used a feeler guage and i could fit a 0.20 in these gaps

and there is some "worn" marks on the casing and the gears, will these be alright to reuse?

see i think we had this discussion earlier in the thread. and people say buy a new one, but not a aftermarket one as they are crap. GM ones are about 200 quid,
then other people say refurb the one you have, and the internals cost about 150ish, from SBD, not sure from GM.
so im just checking mine, see what its like :)

the engine was stripped when i got it.
I'd refit it, when you go to first start it, wind it over with the fuel pump relay out and watch the pressure go on as a just in case.
Oil pumps arnt cheap.

Remember it all touches in there, so wear marks on the faces of them will be normal.
ok cool, the wear marks were not major, the scoring barely made a complete circle.
ok so did some more work today, nicked my dads battery drill ( it had some charge) and done my honing. i didnt hold the trigger on full tho as it seemed to fast. and used plenty of oil. i think it came out pretty well.

and also i bought some more pistons and rods, so i took them apart today for a clean. should i replace the little circlips as a few seamed bent. and also what should i sue to clean up the pistons as the crap is caked on well.

also cleaned up the backing plate with some WD40 just to degrease it, and i won a rocker cover of ebay, so that will keep most of the crap out of the head once its done.
i know its dutch.. .but "tandflankspeling" is quickly translated: 'toothsideplay' so me thinks thats the play you have between the 2 toothed wheels.

and the 'uitsteken' piece is how far the toothed wheels should stick out of the housing.

i always use an old scotch pad for cleaning up stubborn engine parts.

You have access to a jizer/parts bath? give them a good soak and good going over with the scotch. Should see them fine.
Liking the idea of rwd, dolly would be cool!
nah i dont have access John, but i will give them a good clean, and there is a tool on frost which gets in the grooves to clean them :)
so new rings and they will be good lol

Can you get access to trike? (trichloroethylene) A good soak and a quick scrub in that would do it, but don't touch it or breathe the fumes lol. Failing that you can soak them in a normal degreaser or coca cola overnight to give you a headstart before you start scrubbing.
ok done some more work today, lapped in my last two valves.
and gave the head a really good clean to get rid of any hiding grinding paste.
and then i assembled 10 of the valves. all the outlet and 2 inlet.

Regarding a trigger wheel speak to Chris Astley. I'm sure he told me that he can get a bottom pulley made up with it incorporated. All you then need to do is make a bracket for the sensor.
When you say about a piston cleaning tool to get in the grooves - do you mean the ring grooves? If you've got the old rings just break them in half and use the non-snapped end and run in the grooves to clean all the carbon out.

a good way of cleaning up were the piston rings go is to snap a ring in half and scrape the crap out with it :thumb:

T9? and if so what bell housing, 7 degrees or not?

I'm using a porsche 924 gearbox just to be different. I'm not going to run a tilt, no need to as there's plenty of room in a nova.

to clean up my pistons i used a wire wheel bit on a bench grinder and a snapped piston ring...
was this alright, i would of thought the wire wheel would of scored the metal???

martin iirc dolly trans tunnels get very narrow very quickly, an omega box may be a good idea, as they are short and the bell housing fits an xe if you get a 2.0 one. then just get recoprop to make a prop up out of 2 halfs. DO NOT make your own prop.......

the problem with t9 boxes is that, a. they are all 20+ years old, and b. the bellhousings are not cheap, and c. its a one off clutch. now before anyone jumps at me and says but tyou can get the bits dah de dah, true, you can, but its gonna cost £100 for anything like a half decent t9, £50 to rebuild it, £150-200 for a bellhousing and £100ish for a clutch. and then you have to get a prop made, and a std t9 will not be happy with anything over 190bhp.
use an omega, get a full donor car like the one on here forsale that was 100 quid. use its sump, pick up, box prop and other gear and your laughing. :thumb: the r20 in the omega will happily take 200ft lb of torque and if you decide to go let in say 2-3 years, a r25 or r28 fits the same hole.

yes, nip to your local library and get the haynes for a cav gsi. or an astra mk2. photocopy the relevant pages, and the torque settings, jobs a good un. i honestly cant remember if its "work from the inner cap outwards" or " round in circles" or "in a cross pattern".

i then put some graphogeon (sp) paste on the bearings as i wont be using the engine for a while yet. its the same stuff as assembly lube.

yes mate just make sure you clean it with cleaner or something beofre you start fitting, is the engine wrapped up at the min because it should be :thumb:

nah its not wrapped up. i will get on to that right away, dont want anymore surface rust over the winter months :)

just wrap it in cling film thats all i do with mine just to keep the dust out. i also slar grease all over the bores but just spay oil or something just to stop them flash rusting !

mine is so nice to drive! you can pick them up for less than £1k and sell the bits off it! Or buy a 1.8 for a little more and save yourself money on a sump, dizzy and rwd conversiona dn engine mounts, plus g/box.

Do like to rust... Bu then again it's an 80's car made for cheap metal. Most dolomites and imps i looked at before i bought the manta were similar!
Go for the 1.8 berlinetta saloon! It'll have all the bits you need. I'm running a few goodies on mine, nout that is too dear to source.

ok, seeing as it was pissing it down today, i jumped in the shed to do some more work on the engine as opposed to the rusty nova.
got a piston ring groove cleaner through the other day, so first job was to clean all the shizzle out of the grooves and generally clean them, the tool works really well and im chuffed with the results.

then i cleaned up the conrods and put in their new bearings, noting that 4 have a hole and 4 dont so they have a specific place

thats about it for today. gonna probably get some new circlips for the conrods and also need to get some sealent for the main bearing on the flywheel end.

thats the tool i used, works wonders i say
done some more work today, chucked the pistons back together, gudgeon pins, and circlips.
then compressed all the pistons, and put a bit of oil in the bores and got all the pistons in, lightly tightened the bolts on the big ends.
and then new head gasket and chucked the head on and lightly bolted it down.
will get some pics soon
next is buy some lifters, and torque down the top end, then sort out timing belt shizzle. and get the sump etc all on
ok, so got some sealent today for the bottom end.
and started re assembling bits and torqued down the bottom end

got my lifters through, squished them in oil and installed them:

The engine should be timed up without the bottom pulley on mate
never time it with the alternator pully on it... there all different, so the mark doesnt line up..
help me out here... a chevette is based on the kadett C iirc?
in that case you want a manta 18s mount and kadett c rubber on one side, and an Omega A (carlton in the uk iirc?) rubber on the other side.
manta 18s sump, but you dont need the pick up pipe.. there overpriced imo. just bend the c20xe pipe a little, that's the only difference between them. lengh is the same.
Correct mate, a chevette is a kadett c with a manta/cavalier mk1 style front end
cheers, in that case you need:
manta 18s mount with 1600 kadett C rubber on the right side, and an omega A rubber and mount on the left side.
lol i need to find the manta stuff first. the sumps possibly dont excist lol. and the rear axles have vanished lol.

yeh gonna run twin 45's and yeh i have read in my "research" that people have to move the dizzy or coil pack. so thats something for me to take into consideration. and im planning on running mega jolt.

have found this for it. so that saves alot of faffing about!
Mate bought the same kit for fitting xe into his Capri but it looked far too difficult to use and get in the right place as tubes aren't profiled or cut to size.
We ended up making our own mounts using the original Capri ones.
cheers, i emailed the guy the other day. and he said, bolt the triangles to the block. weld the two parts to the chassis rail, poly bush in the small tube and bolt in the welded chassis part. then the thin longer tube is welded between the engine and the polybushed part. like ya say, you have to profile it your self.
im sure it will be alright :)
We couldn't find anywhere they sat nice on the chassis rail either. Ended up mounting it off the crossmember like the Pinto was originally.
Maybe we didn't mess about with them enough though.

puss puss. I think it's a mk2 possibly and the mk1 have the recess headlights
its a facelift, but tbh the earlier lights are better, as the later ones glass fall off.....

btw, iirc youre going to need a kadett C GTE tank aswell.

the pump on it now is driven off the engine, hence needing the facet, you will need a cheap regulator, ill find the vw tuners i use for them in a bit...:thumb: £23 iirc

small update. removed the dash today, and damn they put two bolts in the worst places lol. pulled all the wiring through into the drivers foot well so its ready to be pulled out into the bay.
been looking at the trigger wheels also. and i am going to have to buy a small one and enlarge the hole slightly then weld it on.
will get some pics when the snow stops lol
ok just sold the chevette engine while still in the car, good times.
gonna be taking it out over the next few days. depending if it rains etc.
and then start preping for the XE win :>

Nice project, I really miss my kadett coupe.
got my 8v steel sump through today
and cleaned it up abit and cut out the sump bolt.
now i got to work out where else to cut it :)

ok, last night i discovered a manta axle on ebay, like 5 miles from my house for a bargin price of 50 quid. i hit the BIN. and went and picked it up today.
a mild case of win.
