Could you box out the chassis leg?
i psychically could, but it would remove alot of strength from that area.
IMO its not an option.

lol thanks dude, we need some like this on your red beast :D
Parts esp body panels are hard to get hold of so progress will be slow - there is a german company that has all the bits i need but at £500 plus postage i will need to do some saving!
I was thinking 1600xe turbo in the Kadett :d :d
today i went to a scrappy to rob some fords and came back with these

Is that your pump mounted in the bay ?
Years ago I had a similar setup and nothing but bother with it, when I sold the car I moved the pump to the back of he car and it was then fine.
Also just a thought, could you fit 2 remote resevoirs thus agiving you more room ?
I've not thought of doing it that way before but I can't see why that wouldn't work
jonlem, possibly cos the pumps are designed to push fuel not pull it.....
martin, best be is either fork out 250 from alfaholics or get some short ones and modify/make em out of 90 deg bend alloy. btw you do know the rampipe length affects the power? :)
or an escort mk2 servo extension bar? and move it forward like the let kadett posted in general yesterday?
woah woah woah
rob, yeh i know the length affects the engine etc.
and as for brakes, i was looking at the bias pedal boxes you can buy which have their own master cylinders and then i can remote the fluid holder things lol.
i need to take my fluid thingy off and have a look see if i can tap in some unions so i can remote them, or if i buy short trumpets, problem solved lol

Yeah first OR main pump for fuel should be as close to the tank as possible, you could always mount another with a swirl pot set up up front, or just pump/filter set up etc into the rail, as for the trumpet clearance, i would either move the location of the reservoirs (as already said) or you could get a inlet manifold that comes off the head diagonally like with the SBD TB kit??
Nice to see progress though.
Scott
be carefull with ya master cyl as iirc they are nls anywhere......
as for a swirl pot, this can be used instead:
mann filter part number wk69/1
its for an audi and acts the same.
jonlem, possibly cos the pumps are designed to push fuel not pull it.....
martin, best be is either fork out 250 from alfaholics or get some short ones and modify/make em out of 90 deg bend alloy. btw you do know the rampipe length affects the power? :)
Am I missing something, the tank is in the boot, the pump is the front, I know thats why I had a issue which was just on occasions it wouldn't be able to pull the fuel up, I can see this having he same issue at times thats all.
As for the remote resevoirs that was exactly my thought, I am sure you could tap it and fit something out of the way allowing you to run some nice trumpets and filters. The Rampipe btw has more effect on torque which is why I would look into moving the resevoir and fitting some 50mm trumpets.
i was agreeing with you mate, just giving an explanation as to why it acts like that. :)
i have seen many a cars with pumps in the engine bay. alot of my research had pumps in the bay.
and its gravity fed. if i have problems i will move it :)
and ok thanks rob i will be careful with it lol. i shall remove it and see how it goes.
i was agreeing with you mate, just giving an explanation as to why it acts like that. :)
Sorry mate, got a mental headache and thus not with it at all today lol :thumb:

Lift pumps or high pressure pumps already fed by a lift pump ?
To be fair I believe I had seen something similar which was why I did it that way and it did work, just occasionally you would be mid corner and it would cut out and you would need to pressurise the tank to get the pump to pick the fuel up, this was over 10 years ago though so you live and learn !
im not sure if it was a lift pump or a high pressure pump, but this will be a road car. so it wont be put through its paces all of the time lol.
if i have issues i will change it :)
went and picked these up today. win IMO

time to bin the servo & go floor mounted pedal box!
lol no its not,
time to either buy short trumpets or go remote servo.
i have no need for a floor mounted box!
remote reservoir is the cheapest option
ok done some more to this,
bought a newer big rad from a friend, with an integral header tank. so will make it fit soon,
and also got a 16 row mocal oil cooler so plumbed it in today, not bolted in yet as i need to sort out the rad location.

What would I have to do, to get mine running on carbs with this rob?
martin:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vauxhall-c20xe-redtop-MBE-ECU-and-harness-Nova-Chevette-/110579621945?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM
may be usefull
matt, you need an engine loom off a mk3 fiesta carb, the early ones were carbed but used edis. you just use the engine loom and sensors etc, with a ford specific trigger wheel disk welded to the front crank pulley where your belts go, which can be got off ebay. that gives you the spark. then just carbs for fuel.
rob, i was gonna mega jolt it. using the EDIS etc
and i think the fiesta i robbed it off was a carb version, but i cut the loom etc :( there is a pic a couple of pages back where i got the EDIS unit etc
rob, that link is for dizzy, very little people can use a dizzy on a redtop in a chevette, unless they use the rare manta setup.
good luck finding one :)
i may know somone with the manta type setup forsale.....
if i fi9nd a fez with the loom and stuff would you want it?
rob, nah its ok i know of one, thanks
and jonlem, for an XE setup with a MAP sensor, you can get a complete setup for 280 all made etc, ready to plug in
im yet to buy it, buy they stock them on the shelves
thats from triggerwheels.co.uk or simular
ok some more progress, i made a alternator lowering bracket

They need adapters made up to fit... A mate of mine is building a Chevette hatch rally car and has the adapters to run 16v front calipers. There was a guy on the Chevette forum making a batch a while back.

where do the adapters go. and what do they adapt?
as the calipers bolt on, the only issue that might arise is when the car is on the ground the bolt for the brake line might hit the lower arm on full lock, not sure yet.
and the discs, i have been informed you use audi 80 discs and redill them?
or as rob said get a set of spacers for the normal discs.
and matt, can you see in the first pic, the disc bolts to the back of the hub, you can see some bolts just about.
it is a weird set up and confussed me first time lol.
and a small update today, i had to grind the calipers a small amount for the ATS classics to fit over and spin, all done and they spin freely. pics to come sometime lol.

No idea lol, I'll find out for you. Not sure what forum my mate is on, but his ID is "Ross Cheeks". Nordic Blue chevette hatch with a 1256 on a split 40.
What is the spec of you wheels? offset etc. A guy who lives a couple of houses along is building a couple of Chevettes and was using my nova to test what 13" wheels will fit over 16V brakes. He was struggling.

he cant use your nova to test them, as they have different brake set ups, as you can see above,
my ATS classics are 13" by 6" wide i think, and off set i think is around 40.
and my calipers had a shave lol.
can you get some pics of the adapters at all?

18-09-10, 06:21 PM
Have you tried a nova rad??
hey scott, no i havent, as i doubt it would cool a 2.0 effectivly?
i was thinking astra/calibra next.
and some more small progress on making my alternator bracket, will finish it tomorrow.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/f235a871.jpg
p.s thats a rough outline shape lol.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/b5f507f2.jpg
Nova rad is fine for a 2.0 lol, people run the larger GTE/GSi ones on LET's.
i have one :p
scott.parker
18-09-10, 08:48 PM
But all EX novas use is a GSi rad mate. mines got a 1.6 nova GTE/GSi rad and i have no cooling issues, it's just been hit by my old manifold a few times and now leaks slightly when cold.
Scott
i have a calibra that im breaking atm so im gonna nick the rad off the tomorrow to see what its like, mainly because its free :D
thanks for your advice.
scott.parker
18-09-10, 08:55 PM
But looking at that front panel on the chevette the nova one might fit inside under the slam, this would look nice as its set back out of sight and give you loads of clearence...
good idea bat man, ill see how the calibra one goes tomorrow, and then report back and then source a GTE one.
thanks :)
tilt the rad so the bottom points forwards, makes it easier to fit and cools better.
ok so i made my alternator bracket.
worked it all out, made sure it fitted and came up with this.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/73d736ee.jpg
then fully welded, and made it look nicer.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/7765be8d.jpg
and primed
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/b904076c.jpg
ok just come in from some more (on a roll i know lol)
alternator bracket mounted.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/95244960.jpg
and as for the rad, i went and looked at the calibra one and it was HUGE so i didnt even bother removing it lol.
and ages ago my mate gave me a golf one i think, about the same size as the beamer one i had, the same amount of cores and FPI so it will be ok.
and its thin, the brackets are still in development stage lol.

See that rad is close to Nova size etc, and it fits a treat!
good going.
Still think you should try a nova one, least the inlet/outlets will be in a better place then..
Scott
That little rad look suspciously like an EK Civic item to me.
Martin, i run a 1.2 corsa rad on my XE nova mate and no cooling issues here.
thanks for the help guys, you make me sleep at night lol.
and my mate had it from his golf. so im sure its a golf rad lol. but i can get a part number from it and buy a new one if i ever need to.
and yeh yeh scott parker, it fits well thanks! haha, and i did think about the inlets, but i will just run a pipe along the top into the thermo etc.
as funky as your alternator bracket is, i think it will not be too reliable, and snap. if you put a pivot (bolt or similar) in the middle, then it will mimic the original bracket & you will remove unwanted stresses.

the only thing which i could do, it put a side plate on where it bolts to the manifold to stop any twisting.
thanks simps, im not sure tbh, but ill keep it in mind :)
the alt does need an earth. and i would strengthen it, i did one similar for an xe and the harmonic vibrations snapped it within 200 miles.

martin, you are stressing the bracket in 2 different directions when it is bolted up. and flat way on is no strength. it will get a stress crack.
we had something similar on a mccormick tractor & when the alternator fell off, it took the rad, aircon & timing case with it
i will look at the bracket and see if i can redesign, maybe using RJ's etc.
and mowgli, surlyit wouldnt fall off if the top bracket let go, it would just fall backwards.
ok i am off work for 5 days, so i done a few bits at work today so i can crack on.
my next plans are to mount the rad with some better brackets, work out my water pipes. buy some brake discs, and fit them and the brakes.
and then remove the engine i think...

Doesn't Spanishfly have a small alt for sale and there must be a reason why Gm originally used rubber bushes in the top tentioner bracket

It will eat bearings like you eat sweets/cream cakes/pies/biscuits etc!
They're there to stop the bearings Bering rattled half to death
cheers guys,
edd i want it at billing next year. possibly pvs.
and matt lol, why doesnt the rose jointed version have a rubber mount!
Surely you can make a Rose jointed one for a few quid ?
you could, but i cant find the middle threaded part.
any help would be great! lol
Make it yourself, bit of bar with a correct ID and then tap it.

noooo....
its rubber mounted so if the alt freaks out and earths internally it doesnt send 12v and 100ish amps straight to earth, thus firing the wiring/alt.....
the small earth is there so if it did that it would melt it and stop:thumb:
Small alternator is off a mini digger, rose joints and parts you can get from Mcgill motorsport on ebay or whatever their called.
OOHHHH thanks jonlem, i have found the turnbuckles dead cheap. i shall be investing in one very soon :D
No worries mate, I supplied a few of the digger alternators to a rally company a few years back, I forget exactly what they were off but it was a mini digger. They were just under £100 iirc.

Daihatsu Alternator ~
This is a short guide on how to wire up a Daihatsu/Nippon Denso Alternator.
The Daihatsu Alternator has long been used as an alternative to the Vauxhall, Ford etc standard items as they can be around 2-3kg lighter, fit in much smaller places and run at much higher revs.
The most popular one fitted is the Charade 1.0 and 1.3 litre variants although I personally fitted a Daihatsu Mover to my Vauxhall XE with success. Another popular choice is the Toyota Starlet and Bedford Rascal (van) which are equally small and light.
Most of these can be picked up from the salvage yard from about £20- £30. When searching for them, try and get the plug that fits into the connector socket as this makes for a tidier installation although this is not absolutely necessary. Also, they usually come with an insulating cap on the main battery feed post (grey in colour). Try and get this too as it will prevent anything shorting out against the main batter connector.
daihatsu cuore is another good un.
kubota (sp) is one i sourced a denso job from
I believe there the ones I was getting.
I think that the Daihatsu ones were quite expensive new which is why we used these, it was a few years ago now but if your using used stuff just get one from the Daihatsu or tbh a lot of the small jap cars as they run similar.
i may be able to find one this weekend martin, im off to upullit, so it wont be expensive.
good times rob, just drop me a PM if you have any luck :)
ok so just had a really good time in the shed.
was really bummed out, since i couldnt find the right Y piece for the exhaust. so i decided i would make one from what i had.

i got these bad boys, need to machine the inside out, and redrill the holes and they will fit. but i had the caliper fully mounted, and the disc spins fine. there is a gap in the picture, but that is where the hub will go back further.

Project seems to be going well mate, Just bought a Chevette last night, 2 door saloon. Keep up the good work! :thumb:
lol thanks guys, i bolted on the hubs and they bolt up fine and take the calipers. good times
all i need to do now is restrict the steering so the calipers dont clunk the lower arm.
and now going to pick up another rear axle.
scott.parker
02-10-10, 11:27 AM
Restrict the steering, that don't sound like an MOT friendly thing..
Good progress though, glad you pushing on with it.
Scott
MOT is fine with restricted steering, they would be more unhappy with the calipers hitting the lower arms!
What the feck is going on with the arb lowering blocks, did you cock up? Surly better to use a full block?!?!
i have an idea to restrict the steering, just need to have a closer look when its dry.
and lol alex to the ARB lowering blocks. i have done research, out of the two people i saw, one used a full block, and one used to skinny tubes.
the solid blocks, were heavy. and this doesnt loose any strength at all.
small update, travelled 300 miles to get another axle as it was complete.
so im gonna rob the ARB, the brake internals and thats it i think lol.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/f8fa8182.jpg
not a massive amount being done atm, but small bits none the less.
i know have welded the top half of the manifold. and killed my welder in the process. not good.
and also stripped the spare axle for its ARB, brakes, and a few other small bits. refurbed them, and will put them on tomorrow hopefully. pending weather lol.

lol my thumbs are fat, i used pliers instead.
and yes im a blue fonter, i CBA to join again, seeing as i dont have a nova.....
another question. i have put the handbrake cable on, and its fully adjusted, and it doesnt bite, is this because there isnt any fluid in the system.
to push them off the MC a little bit?
Dude, find a way around! Less steering lock equals less sideways angle. :( lol

Your need fluid in the system to get the brake shoes adjusted, without worrying about the handbrake yet.
And i paid up even tho i didnt have a nova.
done a few bits today, rear anti roll bar on, need to make some brackets to weld to the shell.
and started offering up my exhaust parts. its going to have to come out the other side then it does from standard, so i will make custom brackets all around lol.

Good work mate, glad to see your getting on with it..
Now not to piss on your bonfire, but I'm sure in the one pic i see that you have pot of helfrauds high temp paint, did you paint the manifold with this??
If so, take it out the bay and strip it all off again, as i used it on mine and it WILL burn all off within a day of you running the car and cause lots and lots of rank smelling black smoke!
But you can paint it with B&Q BBQ/Stove hight temp paint, as i used this on my system and its not budged at all, i need to redo my manifold at some point.

do you have any centre silencers ?
thing is the car is very sleeperfied, therefore a standardish box would be better. i say standardish as you dont want some pea shooter thing for those 150 horses to squeeze through
no...:D
and burgo, i agree. the main pipe is 2.25 straight through, and then the back box i think is 1.75, so abit of a squeeze. but not a massive amount.
if i feel its holding the car back, i can always uprate it for a better one. and yeh i wanna keep the sleeper look about it.
General Baxter
12-10-10, 11:08 PM
but it looks crap hanging out the back like that, cant you took it up into the car a little more, so you cant see the box lol
you WILL need a centre box, or it will be a plod puller on tick over lol
lol baxter, do you read my replies lol, this is why im saying i wanna do it like counts where it sits more under the car, as in my last pic, thats as far back as it will go currently.
and the system will be tested, and if i think i need a centre silencer i will get one lol. p.s the nova never had one! :D

Get yourself some aluminium angle iron now an make some proper tidy brackets from that?

flat bar, top ones just need 2 L shaped bits, fitted upside down if that makes sense, due to the tickness its strong enough to hold it.
also id have fixed them under the slam panel for neat ness.

baxter. great
Mike. im not sure what that is, but it looks weak as anything, and the holes are not swaged so they actually make the item weaker, and as rob said, it needs to be L shaped.
Rob, thanks for the ideas. but the thick flat stuff, would it not fatigue under the bend.
and also rob, thats not a bad idea for the placement of the brackets, but im not sure what i would do on the side...
nope, as youd be rubber mounting it ;) so no stress.

would it not fatigue then...

Shouldnt they curve the other way?
I would have thought so too, curved upwards to keep it on the rubbers.
I'd watch it using those bmw, the first/second time you want to remove them they will snap. then you have to make another hanger.
I may have missed it, but what's the plan for this, I assumed a dry build of sorts, then remove/sort bodywork etc. I see you're fitting brake pipes though, does this mean you're just running as is/tidying the little bits up when it's up and running?
[EDIT] Ignore me lol. You can just replace the threaded part. lol
nah the exhaust hangers are right, i hope! the top hook welds to the car, then it all hangs down. i will put the brackets on the opposite sides, to stop it trying to rip its self off.
any better ideas are welcome!
the plan, work through my to do list, dry build effectivly, remove the engine, sort out the engine bay, and then put the engine back in and wire up.
