Mate, do they hub unbolt on the manta rear axle like sierra ones do?
chimp007_uk
18-01-10, 10:15 PM
Isn't that a Manta B rear axle? Isn't it going to be too wide?
chimp007_uk
18-01-10, 10:21 PM
Mate, do they hub unbolt on the manta rear axle like sierra ones do?
You have 4 nuts securing the bearing plate, you can get to these through the holes in the hub.
Then pull out.
So pretty much the same.
in answer to your "to wide", over on retro rides, a guy has been advising me on what to do about it, its ok, it just limits me to what wheels i can run.
or put on ****y arches lol.

So bearing plate comes off like sierra then hub is held into bearing plate. Does the hub allow a splined shaft to pass thru it I take it? How easy are they to convert to disc rear?

Any chance you could measure something for me bud? The distance between the bolt holes on the bearing plates. Hoping they're the same as sierra!

so the 4 bolts, which hold the backing plate to the drum, onto the axle?
ill do it today :)

Yeas mate, I think so! lol Its my understanding the hub goes into a bearing carrier which then is held onto the axle by 4 bolts. Maybe you could take as many pics as possible of the setup? Much appreciated.
i can post the relevant pic from the manta haynes tonight if you wish?

Scott
i haz measurments....
the manta axle is 131cm wide and the chevette is 125cm wide, so a couple of inches ( this makes it a manta b axle, as the manta a in about 20mm wider then the chevette) so total about 2" wider, not to bad, ill make it fit :>
suspension spring seats.
manta 92cm
chevette 95cm
i reckon i should get away with that. itll be fine.
and the length of the center tube from join to end, manta is 64cm long and the chevette is 59. so need a slighty shorter propshaft.
and cheers count, im off holiday until wednesday, so will be doing small bits until then :D
ok so im off work still until wednesday, so i thought i would crack on with some more goodness.
ill let the pics do the talking.

on th emanta axle the panhard rod fitting is on the wrong side, so it just unbolts and goes on the other side. i wish mine unbolted easily, i must of spent hours trying, and then gave up and took it of the chevette axle instead. so now i have two on the manta axle lol.

'Can' get those for novas too, there was a pic from duick or someone similarly well researched with them on. I'm pretty sure it's the manta b/ascona that are the same shells though, unless it's also the chevette?

manta B, ascona B, kadett C (coupe) is something i see daily, few mates of mine are into RWD Opels. i know how they look lol
ahhh, ascona b is the manta based one then I guess, didn't know of the ascona a
manta b is basicly an ascona b coupe. swapping fronts is easy, mostly get called a 'manscona' . even the doors are the same, grinding of the upper part (window frame) of a ascona door makes it a manta door :)
underside is almost the same.

lol, i was drilling them out with a normal drill bit. i wanted to get out as much of the weld as possible so i didnt distort the manta axle much, or the chevette bracket.
i havent yet welded the chevette bracket to the manta axle, as i wanted to bolt it up, befor i welded it and its a good job i did as it needed moving lol. it also bolts on :)

ok, i have been doing some research and have found out some good info for the conversion.
to use a XE with a ford type 9 box. i need certain bits from SBD, gave them a call and the guy was very helpful and explained some things to me.
parts needed to mate a type 9 to an xe are:
bell housing 7 degree - 154.52
release arm - 32.85
fulcrum pin - 3.96
release bearing - 23.44
spigot bearing - 8.50
a standard XE clutch cover to suit flywheel ( flat or pot) 138.06
and a special 1" x 23 spline clutch plate - 126.33 ( uprated ones available)
and a 7 degree manifold for twin 45's is - 94.00

getting smaller trumpets and for 80 quid i cant complain. also got a sweet idea for a air box, now uploading a pic....
bargain mate. i would say it would be rude not to rebuild them with how cheap the kits are
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/DSC_3381.jpg
yeh good point burgo, like 20 quid each a kit isnt it? i need to get some of the fuel pipe fittings and bolts, and some other small bits i think
and the carbon airbox above is oval. and i will drill some sweet holes into it and itll be lovely
ouch that airbox cant have been cheap
Free :D
and the person who gave it to me said it cost him a few quid, literally 3 or so.... good times :D
how the hell!!!! you jammie cock

Not a fan of the 'air box' although its a cylinder as its not in keeping with the theme imo i think the carbon will look out of place and a bit halfords in the engine bay. Sweet carbs though, i loved the sound of mine and well done on the price of them too.

ok havent been doing much recently, not money problems as such, but waiting for a type 9 to come up cheap. as thats what im waiting on really to move on. and theres no point wasting money now on of the shelf parts.
so just to keep me busy i rebuild the carbs. not many pics as i couldnt be arsed, but i had all the bits layed out on paper and numbered lol.

Hi mate. It might be worth your while checking out Yukspeed for the belhousing and some other parts it might be cheaper than paying the SBD premium. Theres a good section for XE rwd conversions at the RSOC. Should be a cool car when its done!
thanks for the advise, i have heard very bad things about yukspeed, so i dont fancy dealing with them lol.
i still dont get why you want to use a type9 gearbox.
gertrag 265 from a manta 18s is expensive, but a r25 from a c20ne carlton works perfect. my mate is running 300hp on one in his c20let ascona B.
a mate of me currently has a full conversionkit for sale. manta sump, left 18s mount, right carlton mount and a exhaust manifold, 400 euro's.
lol, getrags are just to hard to come by.
what if i spend average 150 quid and get a crap one. what do i do, buy a type 9 instead. or wait for another crap getrag.
i have been looking for a carlton box, but cant find any lol.
and with a type 9. it might be a bit more expensive to start with but there are so many after market parts for them if i ever want to upgrade.

what getrag's? 240 or 265?
my mate even ran a 240 4speed on his let lol crazy thing max'd at 180km/h but went sideways till rev limiter in 4th lol
m not sure what getrag, i think 165.

Is it 4 speed?
Theres loads of 5 speeds you could possibley use, all depends on if you want to make your own bellhousing, personally, i would of looked at a type 9

thanks for the advise, i have heard very bad things about yukspeed, so i dont fancy dealing with them lol.
ive never had a problem with him but depends when you go a mate went needing a part and he wouldnt open the shop till the grand prix had finished but he made my mate a drink and my mate sat in is house and watched the grand prix then got his stuff lol
hes an old bloke and very helpful last time i went my x wasnt to happy only went for a throttle cable she was sat outside for 2 hours while i looked round his s2000 mk1 escort and talking about cars lol

Yukspeed is a great institution. When I rallied he (Yuk) and Pete Stansfield (Yorkshire Rally Spares) were a wealth of advice and great at sourcing parts that are difficult to find.
IIrc Yuk used to co drive for Piggy Thompson (James Thompson' touring cars father) and was fairly successful.

yorkshire rally spares seems to be mainly old bike stuff now had a few gearboxes off him in the past tho and got my first set of 48s from there too
kent14sr
24-02-10, 09:54 PM
Yeah I emailed Pete a few weeks ago as he was selling some Dellorto bits I was interested in and I wanted other bits.
He has backed right off competition cars from what I gathered and as you say just does other stuff. He used to pretty much deal in Nova competition parts but said he hasnt had any for years.
Shame as I got loads of my rally car bits from him at sensible prices/and assistance as required setting stuff up. He built/prepared some really decent clubman rally cars in the day!
blue_peg_16v
24-02-10, 09:57 PM
ye when i went once he had a light blue nova rally car in that he was rebuilding and an astra gsi that he was preping go past quite a bit as its on the way to my dads
kent14sr
24-02-10, 10:01 PM
Knew both of those cars
The astra was built for the lad who had the Nova. Once built the Nova was stripped I think - was very very ropy though bodywise - been on its roof a few times etc and patched up (if they are ones you mean and im thinking of lol)
The nova had a carpetted room in his workshop area!
blue_peg_16v
24-02-10, 10:06 PM
possibly there was only a bottom end left under the bonnet of the nova
was a white astra gsi
kent14sr
24-02-10, 10:20 PM
prob same ones
the astra got vauxhall dealer sport style vinyls I think
Is it 4 speed?
Theres loads of 5 speeds you could possibley use, all depends on if you want to make your own bellhousing, personally, i would of looked at a type 9
im not sure! if its 4 or 5, i can only find 5 places if that makes sense, no up or down selection if that makes sense and nothing in 6th so to speak.
i dont fancy a 4 speed, not good lol
and i looked at type 9's and was going to go for one, but this came up cheap and close, and no where had type 9's everyone holds them lol.

wouldnt an omega box fit iif needs be ?
yeh it would, but they are alot bigger and heavier.
Got another package today.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/DSC_3463.jpg
nothing special and dirty cheap. another step closer to the complete though lol
bmx there is a few type 9's at upullit at york. sierra goodness.... omega box is about the same tbh, if a little shorter.
no worries sloth, is the getrag breaks, then ill get a type 9 lol
doubt youll bust a getrag, very similar box to e30 m3 beemers, and the same as the old 525 and 325s
i have heard different things. people said they have been running LETs through them, others say they are week,
i can only try for my self:)
Flywheel on, with ARP's

you bust an e30m3 gearbox on a let in 2 weeks..
a getrag 240 lasts on a c20let a bit longer..
@bmw: what setup are you running? XE fly and 2.4 clutch?
scott.parker
27-02-10, 09:20 AM
.
mayhem, normal xe clutch. this fits yeh?
did you put the extra bearing in the crank?
iirc the center of the clutch plate doesnt fit into the gearboxs shaft.
overhere the use a flat XE flywheel, a 2.4 cih clutchplate and a c20let pressure plate.
i could be wrong in the translation, i dont know the exact part names in english. by pressure plate i mean the big metal part you install last when replacing a clutch setup.
ok, i will try the gearbox on how it is now, and see if its wrong
what car is the 2.4 cih clutch plate, a manta?
and i always thought the LET and XE clutches were the same...
2.4 is a cih engine. there found in many cars, omega A etc.
i'm not sure about clutches.
http://www.mantacabrio.nl/ombouw-2liter-16v-in-manta-b/
you need google translate for that one lol but it's a full how-to for a c20xe in a manta B. most of it goes for youre build aswell.

im slighty annoyed lol
can really see how wide the back axle is now lol
lol he has no other option.. kadett C 1600 or higher rear axles are silly money.
it needs ats classic in 7 and 8x13 though lol
its a tad wide. is just such a bugger about the wheels as the offset was excellent.
they will be alright wont they?

woble bolts ftw
they are studs not bolts
and it pulls them inwards quite noticabley, i wouldnt fancy going 120 with a wheel falling off.
blue_peg_16v
01-03-10, 06:29 PM
sure you can get woble nuts to its the colar that moves to enable them to be tightened up not the bolt its self
OOOOO ill have a ganders,
i would need spigot rings as well lol

If they're studs then can you just get another set of holes drilled into the hubs for 4x98?
ok, have a bit of a slow patch atm,
sold the slotmag's got given some 13" ats classics for free. nom
i bought the wrong clutch, so am waiting for some money to buy another, then the engine can go together.
found a guy who makes ally big wing sumps. so might contact him and get him to make me one. 90 quid, which is a bargin.
also after ages of searching everywhere, i have found a set of manta engine mounts so i can use them and bolt in the redtop.
should start to pick up again soon. :D

Reference Information
Ok i thought i would put some helpful reference material in here for people who fancy doing this in the future.
If your going down the manta route.
Gear Box - manta 1.8 Getrag. be careful there are two getrags which came out of the mantas, and one is right, one isnt.
spigot bearing - you'll need one. standard manta item, internal Dia 15mm, overall Dia 21mm
Flywheel - Flat XE
Clutch Cover - Standard XE
Clutch Friction plate - Carlton 1.8 fits bang on the getrag box. and is a good size for the XE cover.
Sump - dont buy a yukspeed one. doesnt fit with the manta sump, some clash with the clutch cable.
Type 9 box -
SBD do all of these parts, of the shelf. i think the only special piece from them is the clutch friction plate, as it has the 1" splines for the type 9, but the size for the XE.
sump wise with a type 9, a yukspeed one should be fine and easy to source.
Engine mounts - everyone raves about the manta ones. they are so overrated.
in the chevette. once bolted on. you have to mod the cross member to get them to line up. i do have the diemensions to do this, but its alot of hassle. and if you knacker the cross member, you have to source another one.
My way of doing it is. keep the cross memeber standard.
and make custom mounts, make the triangles bolt to engine and then using the rally design rubbers, make up the difference.
hope this helps some people. :d

Does anyone other than yukspeed do big winged sumps? There's look crap quality!
Does anyone other than yukspeed do big winged sumps? There's look crap quality!
i saw a "one man band" on ebay offering to weld up alloy ones, for about 90 quid.
but the main thing i think with the yukspeed ones, crap quality or not, is that they are not 7 degrees.
ok got my spigot bearing through today, fits like a glove. and looks all good.
am close to bolting up the box for the last time :D
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/engine.jpg
I know someone who gets frontera 2.0 8v ones and alters the bowl height. other option is cut and weld a steel 2.0 8v one.
manta 18s sump with the 18s pick up pipe.
you dont really need the pipe, an 20XE item is the same, it's just at a different angle, but not much, so easy to mod (read: bend to fit.)
manta 18s mounts are overpriced, but as i stated before, the best way is one manta 18s mount, and 1 carlton 2,0 mount.
there easy to make youreself tbh.
r25 is also a straight fit, and isnt as big as a getrag, less mods to fit in a smallblock tunnel.
also, dont be worried about the engine not sitting straight, for some reason the sump sits straight when the engine itself looks to be hanging sideways a bit.
my mate is doing me a 8v sump for about 30 quid, making it into a big wing :)
yeh the manta ones are the of the shelf method, but i have two problems. one is finding one of the buggers, and the other is if i have a accident etc, and i crack the sump, im not gonna be happy.
yeh im gonna make the mounts my self, even though i have the manta items as well ! lol
and a small update while im here,
went to vauxh today to get the 6 new clutch bolts, bolted it all up finally and chucked the box on for the final time. all bolts in, and got the starter motor on as well. good times :D
next should be, make some triangles for the block, and then mount the bugger :D
sump has been done. wicked

You not finished this yet ? lol
You not finished this yet ? lol
rofl, not im not rich, so cant buy all the bits at once :D
ok have been doing a few small bits to the chevette.
got it rolling again. after i removed all the front suspension etc.
and been doing some smaller trivial bits while i wait for my welder to come back.
The Panard (sp) rod has to be shortened by a few mm, so i thought i would put an adjuster in there, not finished as im waiting on the welder lol.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/car002-1.jpg
and also, after some decisions, im not using the Manta mounts. as its a PITA. so i bought some of these plates, and it gives me a good base to weld the mount to.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/car007-1.jpg
also as it used to be an auto, i had to source a clutch pedal. so hunted down a chevette pedal box, and it was a perfect fit, so changed the auto brake pedal (wider and more central) for a manual brake and clutch pedal. it fits perfect, and i havent got to alter the shell at all. win

i modded it abit, but i thought it fits quite well lol.
its just 60 x 40 x 2.5 and then 4 x 100mm castors.
ok so today me and a friend put the XE into the chevette. it was certainly tight at times lol.
we put it in engine and box together, through the top as there is a cross member below.
we checked and checked to make sure its 7 degrees with a piece of wood cut to 7 degrees and a spirit level and all is perfect.

ok, i got a prop shaft which fits both ends now,
and have phoned a few companies who can shorten it. looking like 70 + VAT for it to be done. which isnt to bad IMO
also had an update on my inlet manifold from SBD. another 2 week wait. this is starting to take the biscuit.

Whats with the TPS?
Is it going on management over the 1600 cav dizzy and coil stuff?
WOuld there be any way of mounting some custom lenses into the inner headlight holes, and then covering the outer holes with some perspex droop snoot style?
That would look ace :)
i thought the later chevettes had sticky out lenses... but i think they were like the manta ones...

its going on megajolt, but that TPS was there from the previous owner and i think i need to change it for a 4 pin one.

Inlet manifold looks very nice,
I actually prefer the lights you have on yours, not keen on those recessed ones.
lol, the recessed ones go for loads of money, like 100 quid a set with the recessed plastic bits. crazy money

Question - couldnt you have used one piece of new metal and shaped it instead of welding the two together?
What rad are yo using?
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c325/bmw156/DSC_4191.jpg
THIS. :)
Nice progress matey!
sorry, but if they went to the trouble of putting an opel badge on, you'd think they'd bother to put the kadett front panel on too

i could of, but then it would of meant faffing trying to get the spaceing right
where as the original mount + a 6mm piece of plate was the perfect fit.
meathod in my madness lol.
and mowgli, it was the old dear that had it, the vaux badge got nicked, and she took it to her local always used garage and he put a opel badge on, i got another vaux one, but the holes for the opel one show when the vaux badge is on lol.
p.s count, probably a manta 2.0 jobbie, i need to find out if they are any different from my chevette one.
sorry mate, the only other picture i got of it was this one

the exhaust is only tacked in atm as i need some more bends etc, and it sits very close to the inner leg as can been seen lol.
the FRP and pump have been fitted and plumbed in.
still loads to do!

Nice to see some progress :thumb:
lol thanks dude, we need some like this on your red beast :D
Is there not going to be an issue with the exhaust touching the chassis leg? Suppose it depends how stiff your mounts are

Good point, could yon not cut another 1" at least of all the primary's?
Scott
at the moment with the engine unrun, the mounts are stiff as hell, and were bought as stiff mounts.
there is literally a few mm i could gain befor i hit number 2/3 primaries.
its only tacked at the mo, so i can change things if i wish.
all in all, its 4 big pipes trying to get into one pipe befor it passes the gearbox, its all very tight.
i have seen some people cut the inner leg, but i dont wanna go that route.
