Cheers Benn, finally getting used to welding rot boxes :P

Lewis.

03-03-12, 07:08 PM
been looking at a sip 150 turbo what you reckon?

Lewis.
03-03-12, 07:17 PM
Well I called by today to see how you were doing, but apparantly you're off shagging again! lol It's not gonne be ready for PVS like that is it now? lol

been looking at a sip 150 turbo what you reckon?

I've got a SIP 135 turbo and it's a horrible welder. It's not smooth, the wire snares up at every opportunity, and will not produce a proper weld on anything other than brand new clean stock. Mine is banished to the back of the garage, never to be used again lol

will give that a miss,i have a old clarke 150 turbo and to be honest its seen its days and it wont hold a constant weld and forever losing its pattern settings so thought id try a sip but i may now get a new age clarke

I've got a 160TM and love it, anything 151+ Has their better wire feed on it iirc, that's used all the way up to their 4 figure industrial gear.

Balley
04-03-12, 12:43 PM
Well Yesterday I started with this...

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/417079_10150584429053775_718778774_9103026_1926936 038_n.jpg

Notice the lack of floor and chassis leg....

So first of all I removed the rest of the leg.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/431652_10150584429308775_718778774_9103027_2067274 732_n.jpg

And the offending item, notice this part is completely rot free.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/424879_10150584429968775_718778774_9103029_1106967 926_n.jpg

Once all that was done I cleaned up the metal and clamped in the new leg I made last year.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/431196_10150584430388775_718778774_9103031_5440600 31_n.jpg

I then tacked it in.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/64745_10150584430718775_718778774_9103032_49315170 3_n.jpg

Made a cardboard template for the floor.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/426820_10150584431478775_718778774_9103036_2437381 58_n.jpg

Then used a piece of 2mm to patch it up, I did clean up the other side before welding it in btw, and I cleaned the top side when it was welding in.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/425830_10150584431828775_718778774_9103038_3061488 92_n.jpg

After a grind down and a wire wheel I gave it a quick coat of primer,...

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/429291_10150584432033775_718778774_9103039_1439612 81_n.jpg

I welded the underside, then got bored and went 'shagging' as Lewis kindly put it!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/426188_10150584432628775_718778774_9103041_8547393 20_n.jpg

I would try a clarke one, very good value for money imo

Lewis.
04-03-12, 01:04 PM

I dared to cut the sill off today... lmao rot box!!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/424534_10150588524948775_718778774_9119591_2835375 81_n.jpg

So i cut the top edge and down the sides to have a quick look.. OMG

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/431644_10150588525358775_718778774_9119595_8310332 15_n.jpg

Then ripped that all off..

Yumm

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/426158_10150588527073775_718778774_9119611_6682575 55_n.jpg

and the front

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/420484_10150588528693775_718778774_9119619_4454328 69_n.jpg

First hole...

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/421246_10150588529138775_718778774_9119622_1928519 979_n.jpg

Cut out

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/419233_10150588529943775_882814347_n.jpg

and another hole cut out

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/428142_10150588532628775_718778774_9119633_3662318 48_n.jpg

New piece

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/431027_10150588535093775_718778774_9119641_4664158 7_n.jpg

Welded in, and then I ran out of gas :(

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/425453_10150588536568775_718778774_9119646_1074987 839_n.jpg

So I spent ages sanding, grinding, wire wheeling the bay so I could zinc prime the seams :)

any way here is the results, just need sanding now ready for filler :)

Dan you will have virtually rebuilt this hole shell soon from new plating, an im sure in the process increased the weight of the car by 50kg! lol
But fair play to you for bothering mate!

Scott

If it weighs 100kg more its only like having another one of me in it so I don't mind, but I will add it weighed 1030kg before so I will weigh it after and we can see how much difference there is :)

Thanks any way Scott, I must admit I am struggling at the minute! Its bloody mind numbing work.. but never mind, I can still see it being done for PVS12 (I hope lol)

Dan

oh god thats shocking! didn't think it wold be that bad inside lol getting there anyway, I can well see this as PVS tbh, once mines done I'll have some time to help out, and it'll give you some inspiration too lol

So Today I fitted the N/S/R arch,

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/419429_10150598126523775_718778774_9149773_6399723 9_n.jpg

Looks fairly good, so thats a start anyway :)

I cut the N/S/F chassis leg out, and the floor to match the other side... Flintstone car ftw...

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/427755_10150598130678775_718778774_9149778_1371727 97_n.jpg

And I finished the end of the N/S sill. Plus my friend Dan came over and gave me a hand striping the engine, we got the inlet, pump, belts, pulleys and covers off. state housing and gear box off. So overall a fairly productive few hours :)

Note, you can see the end of the sill here to :)

Removed the headlining from SenoV6's nova tonight, as he wants a mk1 one to replace it so this will replace my slashed headlining. Quick pic :)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/431572_10150604278988775_718778774_9171516_1808659 672_n.jpg

Lewis.
13-03-12, 10:06 PM
nice, how easy did it come out?

Balley
13-03-12, 10:09 PM
Not bad tbh. Easier than I thought!

MK999
13-03-12, 10:11 PM
Only difficult bit is the windscreen, I have a 100% record on cracking them, they're 20x more fragile than the rear quarters.

Balley
13-03-12, 10:15 PM
Yeah but we have all the glass out on both cars. So the hardest bit was removing the grab handles, used a small drill and and screw to pull the plugs out. Will turn the round and refit once done :)

MK999
13-03-12, 10:18 PM
I used a claw hammer to pull the handles off iirc lol This was after the shell had been up for sale for yonks and no one had bought it at giveaway prices so I went animalistic on it, sills were properly fcuked from jacking it up by the time it got pulled away lol

Lewis.
13-03-12, 10:18 PM
cool i've got no handles left from last time remember lol I'll get deano to remove my glass again, then just need to get sean to make me a new headlining :)

Balley
13-03-12, 10:20 PM
Well easy enough then :)

Lewis.
13-03-12, 10:21 PM
aye :)

Balley
18-03-12, 02:36 PM
Had another good day yesterday,

Started by finishing the inner sill. So I cut the rest of the old one out and was left with this!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/426007_10150611836053775_718778774_9195812_1095780 028_n.jpg

First plate.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/420464_10150611836328775_718778774_9195813_1866347 733_n.jpg

Welded.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/421290_10150611837378775_718778774_9195817_1532971 688_n.jpg

I then welded the seat belt nut in, bit of an over kill lol

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/422973_10150611837953775_718778774_9195818_8621273 76_n.jpg

Once that was done I was ready to fit the outer sill, I offered her up and starting marking and cutting.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/420307_10150611838608775_134491752_n.jpg

Mostly welded, but then I got bored.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/419663_10150611842148775_718778774_9195829_5329603 7_n.jpg

Also put the door back on to see how it fits..

Not to bad tbh :)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/432290_10150611842613775_718778774_9195830_4218574 32_n.jpg

In between all of that I also painted all the inner sill with zinc primer, and I seem sealed the front end.. what a horrible job :(

Any way that is now all done, just need some filler in the bay.

Lewis also swopped my his two 8 inch fans for my 12 inch, looks great.

Well I started the day off my doing a head gasket on my daily :( sad times

Here is proof :)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/557104_10150625608868775_718778774_9243645_1946470 80_n.jpg

Finished it at around 2, I then got some lunch and cracked on with the Nova. Started by finishing the sill.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/522556_10150625609573775_718778774_9243649_3593785 55_n.jpg

are you doing it today or with Zoe?

Balley
25-03-12, 10:01 PM
Well the car was becoming a bit of a tip. There were lose bolts, brackets, tools etc every where so I decided today to organize the lot. I started with the battery tray which was full of engine bay bolts, mounts and general crap. I gutted it all and brushed it out leaving me with this!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/545867_10150627192183775_718778774_9250718_1429827 261_n.jpg

I then got a load of storage boxes out the garage and slowly bagged all the bolts up etc and put them with the associated part. Then I gutted the interior and did the same.

Leaving me with this :)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/389641_10150627192908775_718778774_9250725_1998894 96_n.jpg

I then offered up the wing to the new sill. Fits well :)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/526669_10150627194913775_718778774_9250735_1691213 787_n.jpg

And put my fresh bonnet on as it was in the way.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/557470_10150627197663775_718778774_9250749_1659124 668_n.jpg

Then I went to the Girlfriends for a BBQ, good times :)

Connor
25-03-12, 10:14 PM

26-03-12, 08:13 PM
Well I got back from work today at 5.51 and guess what,... I did more work on my car... IN THE SUN :)

I made the wing and the door fit the sill better with the aid of a block and a hammer. Then I preped the wing with 400wet and dry, panel wiped it and sprayed it with grey primer.

What do you think. I think it fits miles better than most original Novas wings do!

Well I was ashamed at the lack of effort I have put in recently after seeing Craigs GTE project so I thought I best get my **** in the garage and finally get the wheel Lacquered.

I used 2k Lacquer as I wanted a deep shine,

Here is the results. Not perfect but pretty good I think :)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/545752_10150643078968775_718778774_9308446_1513458 462_n.jpg

I have also stripped the long Shaft and found out why it was knocking,

Cleaned up the Tapered shaft.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/564302_10150642906128775_1086570613_n.jpg

And the Big block inner.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/551593_10150642906468775_718778774_9307491_1989042 219_n.jpg

And here centre of the outer, Looks to be the part at fault!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/524490_10150642906688775_718778774_9307493_1789980 191_n.jpg

I have sourced a New outer off Lewis so all is good.

While the Wheels were drying I gave the outer a coat of primer. I will be doing them silver and the shafts black enamal like the rest of the steering/suspension components :)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/555098_10150643167048775_718778774_9308689_4588457 51_n.jpg

Any way that is all for tonight.

Update.

Stripped and cleaned up my front hubs and rack the other day.

Started with this.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/295138_10150652627783775_718778774_9335862_6041720 78_n.jpg

Started on the calipers first.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/319709_10150652628023775_718778774_9335866_1291976 781_n.jpg

Then the hubs.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/560062_10150652628303775_718778774_9335869_6344857 70_n.jpg

Its come up well imo, Tomorrow I plan to fit new stem seals, then re fit the valves, recheck the clearences and hopefully sort them out and then it will just be the case of painting the head up :)

When I got home I degreased my block, it came up well and the paint lasted pretty well from last year. I just gave it a quick wire wheel and then another lick of paint. While I had the brush out I also finished the top side of my TCA.

Pictures :P

it is actually! he should have stopped and primmed it to seal it. if you paint that now it will pop and fall off.

Balley
17-04-12, 10:30 PM
You do realise Primer is just a porous as Filler. It rained heavily for 20 minutes, we sheeted the car down and afterwards I removed the sheet, took the photo and then dried it off and covered over with a PVC sheet and tape.

I can hardly prime the panel when its raining.

Me and the people helping with the build are experienced enough and qualified enough to know what to do in these situations and have done many other projects over the years! Thanks for the advice though.

Dan, not trying to piss on your fire dude, but the down pipe might rott under that heat wrap, but heres a good way to try stop it, buy some more HT paint in white and spray it onto the wrap, this might keep it from getting to moist and stop the rotting effect etc.

Other then that dude, your one dedicated lad, and i envy your determination, wish i had the get up and go.

Well I decided to pull my finger out and do a bit more welding.

I started by finishing the passenger side floor.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/543219_10150753132118775_718778774_9556830_7099430 83_n.jpg

Was welding until I blew through in the bottom left hand corner/

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/485685_10150753132268775_718778774_9556831_1478888 728_n.jpg

I then cleaned it all done, wire wheeled and D/a'd it all down and the primed.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/577881_10150753134683775_718778774_9556840_1889666 102_n.jpg

Then seam sealed,

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/577416_10150753135433775_718778774_9556842_4235924 90_n.jpg

Looks nice and OE so I am happy.

After that I fitted the rear arch.

Cut down and offered up

Cut out

Massive respect for saving a shell and not just starting again.
Is there much left to do before the paint goes on

Balley
07-05-12, 08:22 PM
Complete list of welding to do is:

Finish N/s outer arch
Start N/s inner arch
Tie in the new front chassis legs to the old ones.
O/s floor requires a bit of work to.
Remove the sunroof.

and that is it, :)

Got home today and refitted a few engine parts.

Started with the sump.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/562257_10150767352423775_718778774_9566047_4317677 94_n.jpg

Then on with the head.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/535802_10150767355303775_718778774_9566057_8335623 04_n.jpg

and finally the Rocker cover. I used Stainless bolts on this as I think it just gives it the edge the car will one day deserve.

Tomorrow I will hopefully get the fuel pump, starter and intake on :)

I am a tight sod, I was going to but they dear and have little to no advantage on this kinda system/turbo. The original actuator will fit nicely when I extend it as I discovered today. Trust me guys its all in hand :)

Today I managed to get a fair bit done.

Finished off the N/S/F inner wing

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/556732_10150840736323775_1545104675_n.jpg

I then degreased the bay and Etch primed the bare bits.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/540468_10150841590363775_620218029_n.jpg

After that had dried I got the ode spray gun out and gave the bay a good coat of high build.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/562516_10150841158253775_718778774_9705957_1480043 922_n.jpg

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/547558_10150841186573775_718778774_9706000_1275259 964_n.jpg

Seems the old paint on the front panel doesn't like the 2k high build, looks like I may have to bare metal the effected areas.

Here is the reaction.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/546385_10150841183503775_2108935626_n.jpg

While I was letting that harden I gave the rear quarter another coat of filler.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/314112_10150841388273775_1055103382_n.jpg

Blocked the top half off and put a guide coat on :)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/551857_10150841389243775_718778774_9706466_1976345 978_n.jpg

And the front wing.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/578197_10150841389573775_313382668_n.jpg

That's as far as I got though as I think now may have over done it :(

I like to punish myself, I was sat down relaxing in the house but I just couldn't take my mind of the ode Nova. In the end I went out and bare metaled the slam panel. Once I was happy it wasn't going to react again I gave it another coat of etch primer. Results came out well.

Well I have been doing a little more...

The roof was in a poor state so I thought I would make a healthy start with that.

Skim of filler.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/540230_10150845636608775_718778774_9718400_2432452 17_n.jpg

Applied a guide coat to the arch.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/560359_10150845637213775_1754954588_n.jpg

And emptied the inside out so I can start cleaning that up too.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/538205_10150845638438775_1113749236_n.jpg

I then flatted the roof off and added some more filler.

Well today, me and a friend spent a couple of hours doing the final prep on the bay, we finished the piece around the lower of the windscreen and primed it, preped the removable part of the front panel and one that was done scotch brited the hole bay again and degreased.

This was the result.

Once I was finally happy I cracked open my new paint and spray gun and away I went.

C'mon Dave I have seen some of the work you have produced. Thank you though. I plan to have the full car in primer by Wednesday and the interior painted by Thursday. Then its just the case of waiting until the weather is good and I can paint the out side :)

Correct dan,too many people just scrap them.thats why theres hardly any left now,i know it takes a lot of time and money to restore one but the way i see it you will get more looks in an old nova now than you would spending 25k on a new bmw or something, new cars are all boring and look the same anyway

Sprayed the inside today, looks pretty crap tbh, i got few runs in it and there is a few lumps of dirt in the wheel well. Never mind as you cant see any off the bad areas.

Can't wait to start build her back up!

Pulled the car out yesterday! Going to paint the bonnet and wings soon, bolt them on. Fit the loom, engine & box, all the pipes hoses etc just to get them out the way. Then when the weather is nice I will paint the back half of the car.

Here she is anyway
