i`ll second this dan, i had mine like that for a while put it made a right mess, another reason why its not a good idea having there, is that the fumes get sucked inside the car by the heater blower, makes you feel sick:tard:. iv jus got a bit pipe going down below the diff:thumb:. anyway good work mate nice to see it up and running

cheers Jay, undisided on what rear seats to go for?!

Lewis.
27-03-11, 07:50 PM
what about GSI rears, but with the coloured center sections retrimmed in a similar fabric to the buckets? Shouldn't be to difficult to just do the middle bits, and would match the fronts really well.

No it bloody aint. 3 of the tins werethe big 500ml ones aswell :/

Lewis.
03-04-11, 08:21 PM

Balley

Well set about sorting a few thing out yesterday..

Started by cleaning the bay and the header tank.

Note the oil on the bonnet etc from the boost pipe blowing off :( lol
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01521.jpg

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01522.jpg

Any way.. I emptied the cooling system. refilled with water and added one of these..

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01523.jpg

Left it running for half an hour and flushed the rest of the system with the good old hose pipe

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01524.jpg

I then wired up my fan using a 4 pin relay and a on/off switch inside the car..

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01525.jpg

I also noticed the gear box mount bolt was tocuhing the box and slowing making a hole in it so I shortened the original bolt by about 5mm.. job done :)

and here are some on the road pictures

Lovely project, coming along nicely. What is the intercooler from you have fitted on top of the engine?

Balley
16-04-11, 08:47 PM
Cheers Pal, its a Astra TDS intercooler with the outlet modified to come straight out rather than at a 90degree angle!

Seems to work well any way..

Balley
16-04-11, 08:48 PM
Its on now lewi

General Baxter
16-04-11, 08:49 PM
the problem your going to have is, the 1.7 uses that intercooler as std, so a 1.7 with upped boost and fuel, its still going to get a little hot

Balley
16-04-11, 08:50 PM
its a 1.5 baxter

General Baxter
16-04-11, 08:51 PM
get a 1.7 in there then lol

Balley
16-04-11, 08:51 PM

General Baxter
16-04-11, 08:58 PM
I wanted to but never did in the end

well think about it,

is it worth the extra bhp and touque to the extra tax and insurance you would have to pay :d

Balley
16-04-11, 09:03 PM
no not really lol... it was already 1400 to insure declaring the wheels, exhaust, suspension, bonnet scoop and brakes

Balley
16-04-11, 09:05 PM
it was a 1996, there are loads of different intercoolers worth having.. focus diesels look pretty good too

Dervy
16-04-11, 09:41 PM
you what:eek: i thought it was a 1.7 you put in it :( o well i spose i will definitely beat you at pv then lol, bigger intercooler is a must you will be surprised with the differance it makes.

Ripped the rear seats out

Every thing was very dirty,
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01568.jpg

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01577.jpg

Strapped some tools wrapped in a towel into the rear quater, put some jump leads on the spare and oil and water on the other side

Finally fitted the new speedo cable.. started by removing my clocks so I could get to the old broken cable.

I tapped the new one to the old one and pulled it through from the engine bay side. Was a bit hard to get through as it kept catching on the dash supports but we got there in the end!

New cable pulled through, still attached to the old one..
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01632.jpg

While the clocks were out I touch up the dash as a small piece of paint had flaked off, I only assume I didn't prep it well enough as the rest is still fine two years on.

And I also reattached the Rev counter needle as it fell off when the alternator was making it read silly figures lol.. did this and went for a spin with the sat nav to check for speedo era.

Speedo was about bang on so am happy with that.. pic 30mph in 5th ftw
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01635.jpg

Once I was happy with all this I rebuilt the dash back up. I then set about fitting this
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01631.jpg

Basically its a Fuel adjuster to compensate for the boost. My local machinist has machined a mm off the total diameter of the eccentric cone! Thus allowing more fuel + more boost which = more power.

New on on the left
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01639.jpg

So I removed the inlet and I/c and fitted.

Went for a spin and she went up from 25psi to 34psi :)
but looked like this
http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ8QYMsyxmtMSU77ohJo3yO4ByRAuKxS 2h5EW2I5fA_ZYQnRdyo

Which is cool for drag racing but not for a daily lol ..

So turned the max fuel screw down half a turn and she now touches 27psi and there's only a bit of smoke :)

I fitted the tank

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01650.jpg

was a bit of dirty job, ended out covered in diesel and waxoil but never the less got it done and it stopped my fuel leak (turns out the tank had a hole in it)

Next off I fitted some steels so I could refurb my alloys and fit some new tyres..

they just clear the calipers :)

UPDATE!

Well as most of you know my O/S mount bolts broke again the Thursday before PV, I was gutted but such is life! Any way my legend of a Mate (Rob) towed me the 200 mile round trip in his MG so my clean yet broken Nova could make the PNG stand :)

Here are a couple of snaps.

Was a 'Okay' weekend, got back on the Sunday and decided how I was going to make my mount STRONG!

So off to work on Monday and I go in the stores and find a Land Rover metastatic bush. Perfect I think. Got home and started WORK!

Removed some ****e..

Any way started to remove the belt and timing cover in order to remove broken bolts and fit the 1.7 back plate, tensioner and mount.

If you make that mount solid and the rest standard rubber it will put more strain on the bolts.

The Idea is its only a 'pivot' type mount any way so being solid it doesn't matter, also as it only resting on the one 16mm bolt it isn't going to twist the other mounting points. So IMO it will be strong and still simple.. But only time will tell!

Need to paint it all up tomorrow and fit the new timing cover, back plate, tensioner and pulleys etc then road test... Fingers crossed :)

Dervy
17-06-11, 11:50 PM
very nice mate, i dont think that will be braking, i think you might want a nylock nut on there though.

Balley
18-06-11, 09:38 AM
I will get one, haven't got one in stock today but do have them fancy locking washers with the tabs on.

Hopefully rather than braking the bolts it will twist on the stud :)

Thanks anyway Sam :)

Cheers Guys, its all done now any way, its very smooth (doesn't vibrate what so ever) and very stiff, the engine don't move half as much now and it even handles better as there isn't 200kg of derv power pushing against you so much :)

Well set to this morning finishing off the mount, first of all I removed it and painted it up.

Then I set about fitted the timing cover, tensioner and belt..

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01898.jpg

Once that was done I refitted the mount and got her running :)

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01902.jpg

A quick video to show how smooth she is

Then on with refitting the other ****ee
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/Nova%20TD%20Project/DSC01904.jpg

So went on road test and couldn't believe how smooth she was and quite, no horrible dash rattle like before either! She even handles better and feels so much more solid, Picture after the road test of her sat with lewis' older sister!

Connor
20-06-11, 12:43 PM
Nah, needs mega tlc and a rebuild and also has mot and tax out next week and i'd rather spend a year rebuilding it properly than scraping it through an mot, in talks with someone about renting there garage for a year, and hopefully getting a new car in the next couple of weeks as a uni runabout. Dont know if you have noticed, but i am not happy with the condition of it atm and it will only get worse if i keep it on the road and use it for uni etc.

Balley

db_1.2
24-06-11, 05:35 PM

Any way went for a spin, it does lag a bit more, takes about 500rpm more to boost fully and its lost 6psi but does feel to want to rev higher and pull harder all the way to the governor! Still requires loads of little bits before billing but am getting there!

They look smart I think, any way on Tuesday I bought this little beast with the intentions of having a bit of fun and doing it up..

I have stole the interior out of it to fit to the TD and made some custom door cards. The Black one will be getting a black interior hopefully leather :) and maybe a 3.2v6 at the same time.. any way I will start another project thread for that... here is the interior what do you think?

Some of you may realise she is wearing Yorkies old boots :)

Well any way this was the last time it looked like that, over winter she is having a 'face lift' :P I have a lot of plans, mainly trying to make it look standard+. I am going to respray the full car, fit new sills and arches.. refurb the wheels in the original colours etc etc. I say standard plus as I still want a huge FMIC and i still want window surround, but this time I want the grey blue Vinyl. I just want it to look subtle.

Any way I have sourced a new Bonnet, Old one is for sale BTW. And have spent about 4 hours smoothing it.

I have just 400 wet and dryed it and its come up amazing, Just needs the 2k High build now.

gas space heaters create moisture not recomended for drying paint.
