Well, im back again and i think a projects page is in order, however this one wont be done over a couple of days like the ones in the past lol . So the idea is, mint the nova up, couple of subtle mods here and there (nothing major) keep it old school and original-ish. So its a 1983 'Y' plate pov spec nova, it has all the old school attributes: no side repeaters, no passenger mirror, no rear seat belts, however it has front headrests and a rear washer/wiper set up...? Anyway heres a couple of pics of the car, ive lowered it 60mm all round, currently has a side exit exhaust too, the plans are, get my alesios, soonish, give the interior a good clean, mint up the body work, bling the engine bay and put a new exhuast on it.

02-02-09, 08:27 PM
i wasn't complaining lol just looked like a standard tip but side exit... Is it calypso red? or just another red, hard to tell

gunny
02-02-09, 08:31 PM
lol ok, it is a standard tip, the bend over the rear axel is where the center sections been cut and theres no back box, so its a little loud lol. it looks calypso red in pics but its more of a bronze colour, someone said carnillion red? or something like that anyway

andrew1988
02-02-09, 08:32 PM
Its not calypso red its something like karnelot (sp.). The side exit was something me and my mates did when bored. Was cool for 5 minutes but then gets loud as it basically destryed the silencer.

Good to see you've got a project thread up. Will be watching with interest!

by the way, who did the head gasket?

andrew1988
02-02-09, 08:36 PM
Thats a photoshop of it. There a WIP in the projects here somewhere. So far with the money from selling this ive bought a c16xe and porsche 911 seats for the saloon lol. We did on the HG on my mates drive. No torque wrench and no proper tools. Used a tiny knackered ratchet until it started bending. My bad

gunny
02-02-09, 08:45 PM
invest in a torque wrench man!! lol. I put my pump on, filled up the water, got it going and water started pi$$ing out the head!!

Same colour as mine, its a weird one. Looks red in most pics, but its actually a copper colour. Polishes up nice :)

Whats the plans engine wise?

gunny

just torqued up the bolts, it mixed the slightest bit of oil and water so a service and it should be fine, my mate drove his OHC 8V corsa round for a while with it creaming up quite bad, good old strong engines :D lol

Quick update, just committed to buy a Corsa VXR engine, comes with box, all ancillaries, FULL car loom, clocks, ecu, key fob etc etc. Hence my quest for a cheap scrap shell. hopefully picking it up this weekend. Plan is, get it in and running in a duff shell (so i know what needs to be done) then see about putting it in the nova :thumb:

Sounds interesting. This is what Chris Astley was on with and then gave up for some reason

Hope it works out for you but may depend which gearbox your running as the new corsa ones (M32iirc) are huge

Chris's build for reference CLICKY (http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/projects-restorations/340122-nova-corsa-vxr-engine-gearbox.html)

Thanks, is quite scary that Chris packed his up and now im attempting it! hence the want for a scrap shell rather than butchering mine.

Plan is im going to try and use an older gearbox? to save having to make mounts and p*ss about with the hydraulic clutch set up, hopefully though, as he is giving me the full car loom (including fuse box etc) wiring it all up shouldnt be too much of a pain in the ****, he says he hasnt cut one wire, just un-plugged and un-clipped it all.

love this car mate wish it was for sale when i bought my mk1

gunny

I know im going to need it, ive got the time and money to play with so why not eh?

John
03-02-09, 08:47 PM
Think they need to be run on aftermarket management, the standard corsa loom has to communiacte with abs, stereo, uec, cim etc etc, or else it wont work.

gunny
03-02-09, 08:49 PM
I'll see how it goes, if it needs management it needs management

John
03-02-09, 08:51 PM
Fair play fella! Get it done and update the wip regularly.

gunny
03-02-09, 08:52 PM
I will do, where did you hear it needs to be run with ABS etc

John
03-02-09, 08:55 PM
I used to work a tech for vauxhall, Didn't have much to do with the corsa d before i left though. The engine ecu has to "communicate" with all of the other major ecu's in the car for it to function correctly. It will throw fault codes up, and may not run, if, for example, the abs ecu is disconnected. It needs to recognise a feed from the column module (cim) to tell the eng ecu that the correct key is inserted etc.

gunny
03-02-09, 08:56 PM
Ahh i see, so say i have got the abs ecu, but there is no abs, surely there would be a way to sort of link it out?

John
03-02-09, 08:59 PM
Ahh i see, so say i have got the abs ecu, but there is no abs, surely there would be a way to sort of link it out?

That i can't help you with i'm afraid, Iirc there was a thread on mig, someone tried doing it, but was having a real mare getting it to run, in the end, he junked it all for aftermarket stuff iirc.

gunny
03-02-09, 09:01 PM
Hmm interesting. Well theres no harm in having a bash myself, probably some to the same conclusion. What was he fitting it to?

gunny
12-02-09, 07:00 PM
headgasket is well dead! just started it up today, and the engine is full of mayo! should be sorted tomorow hopefully

also decided on aftermarket management and throttle body for the vxr engine, picked it up saturday, very nice and shiny new lol :D

burgo
12-02-09, 08:21 PM

gunny
12-02-09, 08:23 PM

Well all went tits up, block is fubared mixed all oil and water in about 10-15 mins and pushed it out the header tank, so to make myself feel better, work has begun on the Nova's timely engine conversion. We did a shufty moving the cars around to get the nova at the back of my mate's (Simon) drive and once we'd finished we got bored so... pics...

First time the R19 track car has seen a road in a while lol, and the last time the Nova will for a while:

And shortly after boredom set in

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0213.jpg

Plan is to put the VXR engine in place next weekend on an 'F' gearbox to get the position and level, then Ginge can measure up for the O/S engine mount and mock one up at work.

Update peoples!

Firstly, thanks for the comments guys:thumb:

Been busy(ish) on the nova today, removed the m32 gearbox from the vxr engine as its for sale on ebay, only to find a errm, not so nice surprise. The Dual Mass flywheel had failed prior to the engine being removed which in turn has absolutely wasted the clutch. Heres the piccies:

Didnt do anything yesterday as we were busy on ginges fiesta:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0226.jpg

So we started by removing the m32, and ginge managed to round off one of the preassure plate bolts....

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0240.jpg

Look at this lot for a mess:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0241.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0242.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0248.jpg

So then work moved on to the car whilst we were waiting for a friend to drop off a gearbox:

Drilling out the spot welds to remove O/S engine mount and other bits:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0228.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0227.jpg

Removed after a while with the hammer and bolster:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0230.jpg

I decided to leave the back support for the engine mount on as it also helps as a support for the slam panel, heres how the other side is supported:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0249.jpg

So heres how it looks now, it will be tidied up better, both pics for comparasin:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0257.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0230.jpg

So then it was time to remove all the running gear etc, car up in the air to save back-ache lol:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0253.jpg

All removed:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0250.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0252.jpg

Wings off and quite happy with what it was like under them:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0254.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0259.jpg

Then more rain came and luckily so did leon with the gearbox, so it was back into the workshop to bolt it up to the engine, and generally some pics of us ar**ing about as usual lol:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0232.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0239.jpg

F13, yes thats right, F13 all bolted up ready to position the engine for making the new O/S mount:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0247.jpg

And that was it today, not much done as it was raining on and off. Also a few parts came in the week consiting of corsa brake servo, corsa wiper motor and this badboy:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0225.jpg

Hopefully my charge cooler kit will arrive this week so i'll get some pics up of that and if all goes well next weekend will be one spent welding and fabricating!

I want to say thanks to Simon for providing us with his workshop which ive now taken over lol, been good mates for years and ive finally got him on here he is 'simooch' so heres some pics of the 'shop now:

Those dual mass flywheels are utter crap. Constantly replacing clutches because they break up at work!

Just seen teh reply about the f28. You realise you can use the standard nova mount when fitting it? Have weld a new mount onto the chassis leg

Small update, had a bit of a dabble on the car after work today, stripped all the seams ready for welding (tomorrow hopefully) aswell as stripping all the areas for the strengthening kit. Also removed everything else that was left in the engine bay, such as steering rack, throttle/choke/bonnet cables, brake servo, fuel lines etc etc. Removed the pedal box and all its workings too as i have my corsa servo to go on. Had a right mare removing the steering collumn, damn shear bolts :wtf:. That was about it for today, hopefully getting the bits to make my O/S engine mount tomorrow too. Didnt get any pics as i was getting stressed lol but did have a play with some super expensive plastic restoration stuff last night that simons dad had nocking about lol.....

Lmfao i like it, mine darkened a hardly noticable amount then did the shiny melty trick so the heat gun got put away!

gunny
13-03-09, 09:56 PM
No it was a kind of chalky blue colour, strange gooey stuff but it made an awesome job on the bumper, it feels nice and smooth and all replenished :D lol

Im sure it will be, but if i dont like the charge temps im getting when its being mapped then i'll upgrade, my rad is just shy of the full width between the headlights, about 4" high by 2.5-3" deep, so i know i'll be getting plenty of cooling from that.

gunny
13-03-09, 11:19 PM
I used that method on my old Sr's and mk2's and got on fine, but for some reason it was just hopeless on this one, must be due to age, maybe they used different suppliers in the early days...

gunny
18-03-09, 06:51 PM
Merh! Got dragged off to pizza hut just after i posted that lol, so anyway, update time.

Got home from work on thursday and the chassis plating kit i bought from OFFPLOT had arrived, so i could see a good weekend coming. Me and ginge both had half days on friday so we strolled round to simons and stripped all the seams in the engine bay:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0291.jpg

Then saturday was an afternoon of welding, as ginge was busy in the morning, and i was busy catching up on the weeks sleep lol. Whilst ginge was welding, i removed all the nova brake pedal set up and cut blanking plates for the holes:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0288.jpg

Removing the column was a b*tch! Damn shear bolts lol:

Thats all pics wise, picked up my f28 sunday night, came with shafts and 2wd kit, also ordered the f28 mount kit from Chris Astley today. When i clean up/paint the box i'll get some pics sorted, i cant see much happening this weekend on the car, maybe weld in the O/S inner chassis leg plate and the tie bar plates, we covered the seams in red oxide once ginge finished welding, just to protect them. I thought i had more pics but clearly not lol

05-04-09, 09:18 PM
Well time for an update folks, had a bit of a doss day on the nova today, thought id take advantage of the day off and all the sunshine. So the plan as to just trial fit the engine as we havent got any gas this week, pushed the engine crane round from mine to Simons (yes we did get some dodgy looks lol) and work commenced after an hour or so cleaning the workshop, then looking into buyin a house and blaa blaa etc etc..... Picies :D

Firstly we got the engine in the air, ish, and removed the pre-cat and downpipe then drained out the engine oil, which was black as the night:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0325.jpg

So after hauling the engine and box out to the driveway in the trusty old wheel barrow, me and Ginged manned 'rhah!' the car up and over the engine whilst Simon ran around re-arrangin the wheels and tires and taking photos lol:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0327.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0326.jpg

Lifted up into place ish:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0328.jpg

And roll on the clearance issues, in this pic to the far left is the alternator which fouled, so i marked it out on the chassis leg and removed it, to the far right is the water pump pulley, which fouled, so again, marked it out and removed it, also the engine mount fouled:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0329.jpg

Thinking the engine mount wasn't fouling to badly i cut the 2 little out tab type things off, but still no joy so ended up removing it:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0330.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0333.jpg

Water pump with pulley off:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0332.jpg

Also the inlet to the turbo was well too close to the slam panel so i removed that too (the slam panel) didn't want to but oh well:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0331.jpg

And before anybody moans, the car IS level on level ground etc etc, so yes, i used a spirit level on the engine, here's a few pics:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0334.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0338.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0340.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0344.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0343.jpg

And thats it for today, not a major update but i feel im getting somewhere now, had a small delivery yesterday courtesy of Burgo (thanks again mate and nice to see you again) which consisted of coilovers, plated lower arms with tie bars all poly bushed, injection fuel tank and a corsa M/C. Also ordered my custom lightened/ballanced Billet flywheel last night so i'll be sure to get some pics up when this arrives :D

Small update folks

Adjusting the engine on the elongated holes on the front and rear gearbox mounts, moving then engine and box as far over to the N/S as possible, which in turn gave me sufficiant clearnace for the water pump and alternator though the engine mount is still a little close so a couple of minor alterations will be made there:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0348.jpg

Started removing the factory engine loom:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0349.jpg

Also found that one of the vacuums will be suitable for a brake servo take off, fitted the nova one just to try it:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0350.jpg

And a couple of questions, im not really clue'd up on sensors etc, i like to keep things simple, i can tell what most things are but these two have stumped me so can anyone help?

This one seems to just have a plug going to it:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0351.jpg

And clearly this one has a vacuum to it:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0353.jpg

They are both located on the back of the engine, any ideas?

I thought the Corsa VXR engine was a 1.6? :wtf:

Good to see progress, but I hope your not running the engine that close to the chassis! even with solid mounts.

gunny
07-04-09, 06:16 PM
It is, bigger head, bigger ports, bigger power :thumb: :D

And nooo, going to do a little shaving of the engine mount to try and get around 10mm clearance, if not the i will start boxing the chassis leg, nothing is as close to the leg as it looks in that pic, i took the photo at a bit of an angle, as said im happy with the water pump and alternator clearance

Irs a 1.6 block with a 1.8 head mate. Ive not lost interest yet and im even losing sleep over it! Not running the m'box as it involves losing too much of then n/s chassis leg. Have an F28 for it instead, stronger and easier to fit.

10-04-09, 10:10 PM
No its definitely stressing about parts not fitting/working, or the initial getting it running, sourcing parts etc etc lol, the days are where the eagerness is

Yeh F28 fits, ordered a custom flywheel and using a 1mm drop LET clutch kit

Got a little bit done this weekend, dropped the engine out and put an f20 on, had to cut part of the sump out (dont worry nothing that has anything to do with oil/strength) put engine and box back in but didn't have correct spacers so a couple of 10mm wide nuts were used but not a great effect was made so i need to pull my finger out and order a spacer kit (unless anyone has one?) then ginge made up a template for the mount which he has took work to make it up, i have took some pics but tbh theres nothing worth seeing

Edit: Bit of a blonde one but can i use those lower 2 braided hoses for rear discs?

Sloth
20-04-09, 11:52 PM
gunny, i use b+q 2 mm thick washers, 6 per bolt mate. does the trick as long as you thread lock the buggers.

Rich
21-04-09, 12:03 AM
Yes you can use the rear braided hoses for rear discs. There will be a solid pipe from the flexi hose to the rear calipers

gunny
21-04-09, 07:47 PM
Sloth, not up for that on the F28 and well over 200bhp mate lol rather buy a propper kit

Rich - ive just been under the car and slapped myself after seeing the solids after the flexis it all came back to me lol

lol everyone has odd moments, i blame my school teachers. Just fitted a disc rear beam to mine

Dude awesome project!

Hasve to ask tho. You have an engine hoist, yet you lift the car by hand?
Why didnt you just drop the lump in thru the top using the hoist?

gunny
22-04-09, 10:24 PM
Too much faffing about going in the top imo, engines not far off the size of an XE and my first XE conversion went in through the top, hated it lol, everything is in and out through the bottom now, so much easier

Benn
22-04-09, 10:39 PM
Xes go in a peiece of piss.

gunny
22-04-09, 10:41 PM
I struggled personally, have found it much easier to go in from the bottom since, each to their own though eh?

Bits keep arriving and i have no time to do anything, got my gearbox spacer from chris astley and fitted that sunday afternoon, not happy with how the engine is sitting naturally so a bit of forcing the engine back a little bit and boxing on the chassis leg will be done, will try a bit more slackening and adjusting first but its looking like its about as best it will get. Tyres came for my porsche wheels too:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/P4240090.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/P4240091.jpg

And rear gearbox mount all modded up (wil strengthen later if i cant find my gte rear mount)

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/P4260103.jpg

Now waiting for my custom flywheel which is taking a while, some bonnet catches, got to sort out a map sensor, wideband amongst a few other things, so much to do, also just bought a bullhorn tubular manifold with T3 flange so maybe turbo upgrade soonish :p

gunny
05-05-09, 10:55 PM
Massive update (loads of pics lol)...

Had a busy weekend, got a fair bit done, started by making/fitting the custom O/S engine mount and boxing/strengthening the chassis leg, happy with the result and its very strong, used 5mm steel (for peace of mind) so i'm confident it would be able to cope with big power if the day should come :p

We started by welding in the HH strengthening plate, then cutting out the box for clearance for the engine mount, then folded a piece of 2mm to fit the hole/make the box/strengthening the inner arch (better as one piece than many):

Ginge welding in the plate:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0374.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0373.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/83%20nova/Photo0374.jpg

Then took back the welds with an abrasive pad, covered it in weld through galv spray ready for the next day, then in with the engine, and making up the mount, we had already made templates and cut the plates for the mount so no faffing about there:
