Small update. Got all the charge cooler system piped up, spot the cooler rad and water flowing, spot the rad :)

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/620fb486.jpg

radiator is piped up just need to do the header tank and boost pipes. Throttle body is sorted using an x20xe one. Going to resin an air temp sensor into the boost pipe for now to get it going. Also my dad sorted some wheel bolts for me so I was able to do this :D

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/eb05cd7f.jpg

All that's lady is shafts, hubs, front brakes, brake pipes, wiring and wiper conversion!

In other new the black XE nova is now ready for Mot and will be attending PVS, as will Tony M's blue XE nova which we did a bit of fettling with this weekend. He had an F16 box on it and personally I always felt the car was slow for an XE nova, he wasn't sure as it's his first one. Not saying all f16's are pants but we put an f20 on it this weekend and it's as if we've put a new engine in, it pulls hard and responds rapidly just like I remember past XE nova's being... Couple of pics

All water pipes are now finished, need a couple of reducers for my boost pipes though. Should be wired up by the weekend fingers crossed. Had to put wheel spacers on the rear as the porker rims rubbed on the chassis leg but still unsure on the front as I need to set the camber up, any advice/useful methods to setting camber on spax coilovers then pipe up please :d. Did a bit on the nova today, made a mount for my charge cooler and started refitting the interior. Also had a retting on my rad(s) mountings/positioning, now got more space in the bay for a fan and brought the rad away from the turbo a bit more.

Cut a bit of ally from my old 309 sump guard (very thick stuff) bent it and put the groves in as I don't have an ally welder and didn't really want to weld the charge cooler so I've opted for good old chemical metal:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/1f8f8e79.jpg

In place:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/9a29cae4.jpg

The I thought more is better? Don't care if it's a mess everything is temp at the min to try and attend PVS:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/386dfeed.jpg

Bolted onto the gearbox mount:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/7e092599.jpg

Then moved on to refitting the dash and making a start on the interior (making up a bucket seat subframe at after this update):

Let the wiring begin!

Hole cut in the glove box for the omex loom to go through:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/ec705356.jpg

Dave lol. Notice the two black Velcro strips, this is where the omex ecu will be mounted, phone died before I could get a pic:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/b19c58fc.jpg

Then Dave mounted these, the blue thing is a distribution block I acquired from work, main power cable into the left then out the right to the car loom, starter loom and omex loom, little black fuse box for the omex and of course the three relays, all this is clearly mounted on the under dash shelf passenger side:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/9e4b8461.jpg

Holes are cut in the bulkhead and the looming begins tomorrow :D

gunny
23-05-11, 07:29 PM
Well she won't be coming to pvs after all that, needs a new cambelt and it skipped a couple of teeth on one of the cams, just hoping the crank hasn't slipped too as I reckon I'll get away with 2 teeth? But I'm now skint unless my Clio sells. I'll be attending in a VXR, but not the one I'd hoped I'd be in :/

shame was looking forward to seeing this. how come it slipped ?

Completey my own school boy error, amidst the excitement of getting it running/roadway it slipped my mind to check the cambelt which appears to have perished and suffered some damage in the past, one part of the belt has a large chunk missing so it's only half it's original width for about 4/5 inches. When I get some cash I'll put a new belt on and give a compression test and another go at starting.

NOVA saloon
04-06-11, 11:13 AM
Hope you get sorted asap dude.

gunny
03-07-11, 11:33 PM
Well quick update to show how well I'm not doing :) finally got a cambelt kit so put it on in the pure hope it would be ok

Had to take off charge cooler + rad, radiator, water pipes just to get enough access to cambelt

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/f3f42663.jpg

The offending item that shredded the cambelt in the first place

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/5d4fd327.jpg

Aftermath

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/6768d906.jpg

So once new cambelt was on gave it a whirl and surprise surprise still no compression so on with stripping the head off

Well put the new head on, everything back together, fired up the laptop last night to start her up and getting no spark, got a reading from the crank sensor, injectors are pulsing, 'stat sync'd is on on the laptop, proved my coils, leads and plugs just can't get the barstard to spark :/

gunny
06-09-11, 02:30 PM
Figured out what's wrong, need to run an x16 crank pulley and sensor, should have one for the weekend, also bought these to cheer myself up :) :

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/e2edca07.jpg

And in other news the primered corsa b on Porsche rims that came with me to pvs is being treated to some special bits, more info on that soon! ;)

gunny
12-09-11, 12:09 PM
Fitted the x16 pulley and cs but still wasnt getting a spark so we loaded my mates map onto the ecu and tried it on his car but wouldnt fire his up pointing to a dead ecu so ive been on the phone to omex today, turns out I have a modified ecu to run an amplified coil, hence no spark from my non amplified zetec coil or his coil. Got to box it up and send it off to them tomorrow so they can change it back and test it etc. Hopefully that's it now she should run.

Ignition timing

Lean running causes a car to pop flames on the overrun, timing would have to be miles out. If you can get it far enough out to accidentally run an anti lag system you shouldn't be playing with it lol

"Aut" Translates to either either or or... if that makes sense, as it can mean one of either and or. So translates to "Either peace or war" However if you google it, it's actual modern meaning is "In peace or war" i.e although the literal translation is either peace or war, the modern equivalent of the whole phrase is "in peace or war" and it's the motto of the Scottish "Gunn" Clan. :thumb:

Spot on mate, very in touch with my Scottish family/background and I carry the name of the Gunn clan, the motto 'aut pax aut bellum' is on my family coat of arms/crest which I also have tattooed on my back :) I prefer the direct or original translation of either peace or war, that's what my family always told me it says lol

gunny
10-11-11, 09:56 AM
Can see the difference! Mine are ET30, the left just about clears but it's had a quarter on that side, the right is basically on the tyre so hopefully with them on should just clear?

10-11-11, 10:05 AM
Have you thought about swapping to a narrower tyre?

10-11-11, 10:08 AM
I'm on 195's don't really want to go any narrower

Can't really see it too well but neg 1.5 degree camber on the back wheels:

60mm springs fitted on the back:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/b0831720.jpg

Still scrubbing on the O/S though -.- getting the old man to pull his panel hammers out next week and see what he can do. Also finished off the aeroquip fuel lines. Started by 'modding' the fuel rail, started filing off the little collars so I could get the flaring too on properly but didn't realise they were actually a join :s:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/7019d11d.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/8e8fd88c.jpg

So I got stressed and stopped taking pictures lol as you do, but they are now flared, fuel rail is back on and fuel lines finished, made a start on fitting the grey interior too, still need a few bits if anyone can help? I need grey window winders (can swap for black ones?) I need grey door handles that go on the door cards but the longer type that angle up towards the door open lever, small grey door pockets and grey rear arch carpets...?

Pete

Just a quick one, she now fires up at ease every time. Got to fit seats, wiper motor/linkages, bonnet catches and mount fuel reg, mount coil, mount charge cooler pump, flare arches and then looking at getting her mapped after xmas all being well :). Im having trouble with the O/S driveshaft though, I've tried 2 else 3 circlips on the inner CV but its just not clipping in right, its a ******* to get in but once fully in a slight tug pulls it out far too easily also the shaft appears to be taught i.e. the cv's at full extent thought i bought them from colin novarally on here so wouldnt imagine them to be wrong? Anyone else had this trouble running F28 with 2WD conv plate?

Mines now different to how it would be in a corsa mate think you need a twin piston DV which I do have on mine, a bailey one

burgo
14-12-11, 09:20 PM
ive heard of a fix for the cv at full extension problem but never done it myself. what you do is get one of the big washers from the driveshaft and put it inside of the hub. sitting here thinking about it now though i see that giving you problems getting the split pin in when done up, hmmm. its just what ive heard anyway.

gunny
14-12-11, 10:38 PM
Unless you don't use a washer externally, then you'd still get the pin in...

Although most cv's have staggered holes.. Outer ones may work

gunny
22-12-11, 03:56 PM
Figured out what was up with the driveshaft, inner cv was too long after the circlip so took the grinder to it - job done. Mounted the fuel reg on the firewall, ordering a set of DIY ht leads to suit the ford coil so I should be able to hide the coil pack under the inlet. Not liking the spongy pedal with the v6 calipers so I'm picking up some turbo calipers tomorrow :) quick pic of the two VXR's at home :p

Yo Yo Yo! Right I've not been being lazy again, I had Christmas off the car and then today had been my first day off since new year! So needless to say I took advantage of it :) mounted my charge cooler header tank, fitted headlight clips and headlights, did some figuring out of the breathers so I can block a couple off and gonna make up a DIY rough **** catch tank (any bottle suggestions ;) ?) made a bracket up to mount the ford EDIS coil on the gearbox then started the b*satard job of making my own HT leads -.- literally blood and sweat went into them, bought the kit from a place called megasquirt-v8.co.uk if anyone ever needs them, only supplies kits for the ford coils. Anyway here's some pics, there aren't any of me making the leads as I spent most of my time shouting and swearing, if you have a go at this go and buy a proper crimping tool!

yeah, best hide it i think. i do like the bailey catch tank as it'de symetrically match my bailey header, but then i do also like the tidier look; nothing being on that side of the engine bay. Not to mention not having to fork out £££'s.
Might just go back to my oasis bottle, i dunno.
Ive no idea tbh about the hall of fame total vauxhall thing, but ide suggest a better quality photo if you can. Im sure many readers would think 'wow, no way'.

*EDIT: i also wanted to comment on the aero bonnet catches - ive not seen the under bonnet type before - ive a feeling it'de look better if those bolts around the outside were black, like the catch itself..?

gunny
11-03-12, 09:56 PM
Yeh i agree love the empty clean bay look and I tried to go for it, havent really succeeded lol. I love home made catch tanks, I was going to do one don't know why I didn't.

As for the screw heads yeh they're going black just not got round to it yet. I'll look into TV :)

Whats the blank for? if your fitting an uprated/relocated dump valve etc?
Also dude hows the charge cooler system work with your intercooler?

Ive got a few parts to make a X16XEL for my new loon project.

gunny
11-03-12, 11:06 PM
Yeh you block off the old recirc valve and fit an aftermarket dump valve/BOV.

I have no intercooler, charge cooler system is an independent water system that pumps liquid (mine has 'wetter water' in) through a radiator mounted at the front, which you can see just poking out the bottom of the bumper, the then cooled water flows through the charge cooler box, which is basically an intercooler in a box, cooling the charge/boost temps.

scott.parker
11-03-12, 11:09 PM
So if you don't fit the bov blank, how does the vxr recirc valve work, just dump it back in?
Humm is it worth doing the charge kit over the normal inter cooler kit?
As I'm looking at cooler positions and space for pipes etc..

MK999
11-03-12, 11:12 PM
recirc just chucks hot air back through the turbo yeah. Always thought the standard VXR's were dump valve'd as you can normally hear them turbo stall at low RPM and dump it at higher boost, unless everyone and his dog replaces it with a dump valve with a minimum boost before it dumps.

gunny
12-03-12, 12:02 AM
As MK says it just recircs it back in to the turbo. There's mixed opinions over charge coolers, a lot of people say they ain't worth a w@nk but think that's mainly on big turbo/power jobs, my charge cooler is bigger than the ones that courtenay supplied for the c20let's... Intercooler will always be better though. I went for charge cooler so I didn't have to have a plow/GTE/SR bumper to hide it.

My Corsa VXR doesn't chatter but you can here the recirc valve, like a quiet dump valve.

MK999
12-03-12, 12:16 AM
Could be that then, not sure on the chatter, every VXR I've heard seems to do it, always loved the fact it retains that awesome sound but still dumps higher boost for safety. Pretty sure you can get DV's made to operate at anything above 4 psi for instance though.

My Corsa VXR doesn't chatter but you can here the recirc valve, like a quiet dump valve. fit a cone filter back dump ruels lol . mk that what your proberly hearing every tom dick and harry go out and fit a green cotton or jetex cone filter and when the recirc dumps it come back up and eco out throe the cone filter the standard air box hides this un less it been derestricted and a performance panel filter fitted.

gunny
12-03-12, 07:20 AM
I had an open cone on mine and it sounded like an electric dump valve even at low revs. Reckon you need a filter, recirc blank and dump valve

Hello all (who haven't lost interest!) car was supposed of been mapped Saturday (my birthday) but when I went out to adjust the clutch up I found it would not release at all, so mapping postponed a week and I spent my birthday doing this -.-

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/8f4ac791.jpg

Had to take off the box to figure a way of making the release bearing travel further, ended up taking it apart and using an old centre cap to space the bearing part away from the main body, yes it sounds and is rough as feck but that how I roll an it works lol I didn't take a pic as I was getting p1ssed off which later resulted in me kicking one of my aerocatches off once the car was back together. Yes I'm an angry boy at times. So I've ordered some plush flush ones now that sit on top of the bonnet and also ordered a walbro 255 pump so should have them on and ready for mapping saturday morning :)

One step forwards and about thirty back, fair play for doing it on your birthday though mate, is it back in and running again now though?

gunny
26-03-12, 06:40 PM
Yeh running again but now killed another set of plugs and it's blowing from the downpipe, but I've also sorted the gear linkage, think the average is 1 step forward 4/5 back lol

Spudly
26-03-12, 06:45 PM
How the hell has it eaten a set of plugs, cos its overfuelling due to not being mapped?

Thanks mate. Finally got everything back together and finished up tonight, spent the night driving round trying to get fuel for her and I've only just got in bed. Up at the crack of dawn tomorrow for mapping :) I'm very nervous!

brilliant work mate hope mapping goes well

gunny
31-03-12, 02:01 PM
Mapping went well although the results are low. 186bhp 250+Nm, it's spun the wheels on that run. The problems we're having are the charge cooler not being any where near capable, over 90 degrees charge temps! So I'll be ditching that for an intercooler. Also the 2" exhaust system although it's a straight through is holding it back but Marc Hedley dropped off a 2.5" system last night so I'll be popping that on in the week an we don't think the plugs are upto much so may need to change them too. All in all though it's been a good day, it runs spot on, drives nice and pulls hard considering at the minute it's around 150 ponys at 7psi. Will be going back in for tweaking once I've sorted it all.

Nice work, wouldnt be worried about the figures, that can be easily sorted. Bad news about the chargecooler setup, but as you said, will be easily sorted with an intercooler setup. Top work anyways, looks awesome!

gunny
02-04-12, 07:25 AM
Thanks for the comments all. I've made a start on the car last night, got a frontera intercooler which is proving a bit of a headache due to the VXR engines coolant pipe intake/outlets. Ordered an alloy civic rad last night so gonna give that a go, may also be able I ditch the header tank an a few pipes with that so should clean up the bay a bit. Plan is to get cooler-rad-exhaust and fuel pump done this week, mot/tax Friday and another mapping sesh Saturday, can't see it happening but it's something to set my sights on lol

gunny
04-04-12, 11:32 AM
Excited to say the least! E-mails were sent back and forth to Jame from Total Vauxhall yesterday :D I will be having a feature but they asked if I'd be willing to 'spruce it up a bit' seeing as she is in a bit of a state I've agreed if course :). So hopefully another mapping sesh this week when the cooler and exhaust are on then she's off up the new unit to be stripped, prepped and painted, also gonna do some work on the engine bay and freshen it up whilst we're at it.

That's great news but my lord since when they been fussy about condition? Seen astras with ignition barrels hanging out of them etc

gunny
04-04-12, 12:17 PM
Don't know :/ think it's probably cause its the first Z16 possibly first VXR? I know they've featured rough looking rally cars but they're rough for a reason, mines just neglected lol

Southie
04-04-12, 12:25 PM
Which feels faster with the VXR engine in then? Nova or Corsa??

gunny
04-04-12, 12:32 PM
Nova definitely, atm it's set at round 7psi and made 160 at that and feels bit quicker than an XE, even at that there was well in excess of 200Nm torque.

Southie
04-04-12, 12:37 PM
Well good work on getting this to a decent running spec, will be nice to see it get some recognition in a magazine at some point ;)

gunny
14-04-12, 12:05 AM
So with fitting the intercooler a different rad was required, impulse bought a civic ally rad which didn't work out so well :/ lol

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/11f54515.jpg

Dropped it round my little brothers mates so he could get happy with his tig, moved both inlet and outlet, breather, mounting points and blocked off the filler cap

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/34700f0b.jpg

All so it could be tipped on its side, frontera cooler in place(ish)

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/41e7f255.jpg

So then new boost pipes were needed and unfortunately my box of hoses just didn't cut it so I ordered this lot

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/6f76de08.jpg

Ordered from 3 different eBay shops lol so they all finally finished arriving today and I set to it after work

135 degree off the turbo with ally joiner to cooler

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/60d10ea9.jpg

All in, very pleased with how they turned out seeing as it was one of them 'feck it, might work might not, I'll just order em!'

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/gunny07/426fad56.jpg

Just got to sort a t-piece tomorrow for the bottom rad pipe and she's all plumbed in again. Hopefully get back in for mapping sometime next week then it's off up the unit for paint!

Also, Tuesday night some cnut broke into the car, screwdriver in the drivers lock. At first I thought they may of been disturbed when breaking in but the door was unlocked and on the catch. Steering lock wasn't even on so they didn't even try snapping the lock or hot wiring/back boxing it (even with no steering cowling). The mono steering wheel and bailey dv in the drivers footwell werent touched but the glovebox had been opened, where the omex lives... Luckily it's locked up separate from the car at all times...

In other news, my lil bros mate has bought my mum old derv Corsa, so they did this to it today lol

Is it just me thinking that intercooler is not getting any air at that position?

I would put it higher up behind the grille.

gunny
14-04-12, 01:44 AM
It has cores exposed under the bumper and in the first slot of the grill, we shall see what the intake temps are like when mapping again. It can't go higher there just isn't the room. I have a plan if it doesn't work too well the way it is. An idea I shared with burgo many moons ago lol

Also forgot to mention the 2.5" system is fully bodged on, should do the job for now lol

You could always trim away the bottom edge of the bumper to increase airflow to the intercooler if needs be...every little helps

gunny
14-04-12, 02:11 PM
Yeh that's what I'll try first, trim out the first grill slat and the bottom of the bumper, if not its the bumper thing I photoshopped burgo and yeh was a long time ago lol maybe 3 years

Fitted new fuel pump last night, engine all plumbed up, fired up straight the way but popped a coolant hose when it got up to temp but my bro and dad sorted that whilst I was out today, came back adjusted linkage and took its for a quick test. Fook me! It's on 7psi iirc and it's a fecking animal! Can't wait to get it in for mapping again and wind it up to a bar again :D
