Wrong!

A small wrinkly thing that played with Drew Barrymore at a young age.

christ, what happened here? an Alien invasion and the corruption of minds?

Sorry for spamming your build thread!

ET is offset, some german abbreviation I believe.

offset is centre to hub face, centre moves when you make something wider on one side, hence my comment earlier int he thread as I did the calces for some wheels for my locost and adding 1.5" to a 5.5J wheel to get a 7J wheel would change the offset from 49 (standard corsa steel) to 31 which is obviously not ideal!

i LOVE the look of the front arches now that theyre all built up and trimmed, the wheel fills them perfectly! however...not such a fan of the rear arch anymore, would look neater tapered back into the tail light i think. odd thing is i used to really like the rears and not like the fronts! amazing what a bit of context can do.
hopefully you wont take that as criticism as i dont think bodywork is too important, rest of it looks sweet and i look forward to updates :)

Big thanks Chaps - Kenny the arches are as they are because they needed to be for the width

Update time at last -- so prior to billing i made an effort to get the car in to a state worth displaying, basically finishing the paint, fitting all the panels, doors, windows suspension etc so it was a rolling shell

So here are some pics from that stage there arn't loads due to the fact i cba with the camera all the time i just wanted to get on lol

Anyway i finished off the Jack on the roof adding in the missing lines

Taped it

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted138.jpg

Masked it

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted145.jpg

keyed the paint

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted139.jpg

And whacked some colour on

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted147.jpg

Not too bad - other than the bugs lol

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted157.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted156.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted155.jpg

Then sat back for some T

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted142.jpg

While that paint was drying i lifted the front end and started to strip the front suspension out so I could paint it

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted151.jpg

All stripped

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted149.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted150.jpg

And everything in the middle of a heavy painting session

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted159.jpg

So with yet more paint drying i found myself sorting out some of the little fiddly jobs that are a pain but a must at the same time

Wing mirror mounting base plates from 3mm Ali

The base plates are fitted to the doors with nut certs

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted161.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted166.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted167.jpg

I fitted all the Polly windows using 206 window rubbers and some sealant (classic zip tie to keep the window in place while the sealer drys)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted168.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted163.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted162.jpg

Secured the front wings with some brackets and bolts/ rivets (as some one had cut the inner edge off the wing that you would usually use to bolt it to the front panel)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted169.jpg

And mounted the lights to make sure the wings fitted correctly

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted170.jpg

And a quick one of the light weight door handles (standard nova ones de rubbered and cut out)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/carpainted165.jpg

After the build up the car actually made Billing as seen in the previous lot of photos.

Count Vaux Alot
19-07-09, 10:12 PM
This then leads us to post Billing progress basically todays efforts

I started to try and fathom the braided brake line configuration to which i quickly realised i didn't have all the fittings i needed Doh!

The engine bay side nearly all sorted minus some P clipage

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild001.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild002.jpg

And into the cabin straight down the centre of the car

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild003.jpg

To the rear were the line splits and i ran out of fittings (i used an extra one in the engine bay)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild004.jpg

As i had come to a holt with the brake lines i turned my attention to stripping out the rear suspension in order to paint the rear drums and back plates, fit the rear shoes and cables etc and measure up the rear springs in orded to purchase some of a higher pondage as the current ones are only 150....any one make a recomendation to the correct poundage for the track?

Sus lowered

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild005.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild006.jpg

The gaping hole waiting for the tank thans comming soon

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild007.jpg

The drums cleaned

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild008.jpg

Acid etched

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild010.jpg

And greened with a brush as getting the gun out just for these seemed like effort.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild009.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild011.jpg

And the back plate took some green also

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild012.jpg

Yet more paint drying again so on with something else - the rear arches or at least the hole under the rear arches, i do not want everything i come across on the road/track to end up in the rear arch cavity so i sealed the inner crevise with some stone chip and then expanding fomed the whole funking lot

Stone chip

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild013.jpg

And a giant alien fungus

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild015.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild018.jpg

Count Vaux Alot
19-07-09, 10:13 PM
Half way through the second arch i ran out of foam....bastid

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild023.jpg

Once the foam had cured i gave it a light trim

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild027.jpg

But it hadn't set deep inside so i have left it over night, and continued with the fuel system.

Firstly the swirl pot, its going around here

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild019.jpg

But i needed to make a bracket to sit it level so i made this one up out of Ali

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild022.jpg

It now sits nice and level

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild020.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild021.jpg

Then back to the rear and the brakes - i fitted some new genuine brake cylinders as the others were funked

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild024.jpg

Then rebuilt the brakes only to find the hand brake cables were wrong ffs

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild017.jpg

This i a complimentary shot of the cabin from the rear just because

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild026.jpg

And one of the Spaniels who put up with my noise all day even though they were trying to sleep

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild014.jpg

That basically concludes todays efforts, i still have much to do but i'm feeling better as its slowly coming together and the list of bits i need to buy is getting smaller. Off the top of my head i need

stud conversion
brake line fittings
mesh for the bonnet triangles
flush fitting filler cap
an exhaustThanks for looking

I can't see any problems with it - the arches are sealed before the foam goes in and the foam stops any other sh!te going in to the cavity, the foam will then be finished with paint or sealer etc once its all trimmed up job done :thumb:

Great progress on the rest of the car, had a poke around it at billing and was quite impressed.

New reservoirs fitted to the pedal box with out the drop lines

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild029.jpg

Fitted the other bulkhead fitting through the floor in the rear

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild032.jpg

Then began fitting the lines to the rear

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild034.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild038.jpg

Tidied up the lines in the engine bay

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild048.jpg

Once the lines were piper to the pedal box i went back to the rear of the car and fitted the lines from the bulkhead fitting to the rear drums

Rear braided lines under the boot floor look rather long, also be carefull what you use on the expanding foam, as I tried doing some door builds with the stuff years ago & they melted.

red threadlock/loctite generally needs to be heated if you even want to undo it with a spanner on the end, shouldn't think it will let go with a nut spinning off. lol

lol well i was thinking what if the heat generated from the brakes(drums/discs) slowly decays the threadlock.. suppose they dont get that hot! and i have really underestimated itlol cool..

MK999
25-07-09, 01:13 AM
fair point actually they will get fairly hot at times, but if you think about the stud will be spun into it's thread on tightening too, so both nut and stud will be roughly as tight as each other if done properly, so the stud only needs a small amount of persuasion to sit in place

Costco and it is a very nice jack - very light and can lift 2tonne!

My mates just got one from Costco too. Although he is yet to use it. Same as my Arcan one that I gave about £240 plus delivery for lol. Wsh mine was £80.

It's stood the test of time though now, easily 3 years old. Can't beat em :thumb:

Loving the build BTW mate.

Count Vaux Alot

Well i had a steel 3tonne black metal one from costco (its in the pics some were) it is low lift but weights about the same as it can lift lol so when i saw this light weight one i thought that would be ideal for pit use while on track etc so win win really :d

Well after a very eventful week/weekend involving getting a new job and, then facing the fact i'm going to have to move to Hampshire (near Bournemouth) for said job and, then having a panic car boot sale to shift some junk i have actually managed to make a small amount of progress with the car.
The new job is with a company called universal turbos (http://www.universal-turbos.com/) the money and the prospects are considerably better than in my current job so that justifies the move really, anyway progress

Finally picked up some more expanding foam and finished off the o/s rear arch

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild056.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild059.jpg

Then i got thinking about what i was going to do fuel filler wise as the new wide arches didn't have a filler cap facility. Originally i was going to buy a flush fit fuel cap but the cheapest i could find that met my needs was around £80 so, i thought funk that, consiquently i have adapted the old one and now the filler sits inside the drivers door (a favourit position when relocating the filler)

The old filler after a good clean up

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild072.jpg

A minor alteration

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild073.jpg

A new hole in the inner wing

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild069.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild070.jpg

Then with the addition of another piece of pipe with a 45deg bend and some hose it now looks like this

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild075.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild076.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild077.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild078.jpg

Once it was all fitted up and sitting comftable i took it all apart again for some paint - i only got as far as priming but at least i know thats that sorted

pipes primed

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild079.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild080.jpg

During this process (in order to get the filler pipes lined up) i also cleaned up and fitted the fuel tank

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild074.jpg

Now the tank was in position i could fit the fuel lines and low pressure facet to the car

Facet pump with the fittings fitted with pipe seal (none of the ptfe shoit)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild081.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild082.jpg

Count Vaux Alot

And the pump mounted in its new home, behind the drivers seat

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild084.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/Rebuild085.jpg

I have chosen this mounting position against the favoured chassis leg mounting position under the car for a couple of reasons, firstly because the pump is designed to opperate sitting this way up and secondly and most importantly there wasn't a suitable mounting position under the car as the space behind the rear axle will be filled with an air deffuser (hopefully) - i'm happy with it here and i will enlighten you all to the pipe work strategy once i have some new fuel hose.

Thanks for looking :thumb:

Well there would be certain restraints ie cost for one. I have recovered enough funds from the bits i've sold to see the house savings fund well on its way and i can see myself ever selling the shell for half what i want so i thought i could just do a major budget finish on it and see were it goes from there.

Hope you can afford to finish it, even if you decide you dont want to keep/cant keep then it will be easyer to sell complete.

Good luck.

If you can now rebuild or carry on then yes, there is no rush to do it, you could have it as an ongoing project, something to potter about on, it doesnt matter whether it takes you a month or two years if its what you want to do deep down, and plus the fact youve reconsidered it means deep down you know you want to finish it:thumb:

i spent silly money on my last nova and just bought what was needed. this cost me loads.

i have now sold that car and moved on. i have done it on a budget and as such, i have sourced the right parts and the right price i was WILLING to pay.
as such, it has taken me over a year to get all my suspension and brakes together but i got it and its now done.

do the same, buy what you need when you see it. dont let yourself struggle.

i'd sell my car again in a second if it ment me losing my house. some things are just more important, but we also have to have our fun and pleasures but at a sacrifice.

My desire to do something different is high but with anything fancy inevitably comes cost and time neither of which i have a great deal of atm.

Give or take lol

No the story basically goes i got a new job unexpectedly, consequently i had to move 200miles from home to temporary accommodation with no garage or car related facilities (the inlaws house) so i needed money for a new car and a house deposit. Selling my stuff was the only way to realsise that amount of money that quickly so it had to be done.

I still haven't enough money to buy a house but i do have a nice car and i'm still saving so everything is now on a tight budget for the moment.
Once i'm back on course it will be all good!

Oh and the different approach bit wasn't aimed at my new tight ass status it is what i'm going to do with the car engine wise etc

Count Vaux Alot

Right then people the time has come to announce 'phase two' as JB put it of my build.
After some long hard thinking I have decided to take a completely different approach engine wise (and to the whole build to be fair).
As for the car its self i still have the shell, custom suspension parts, poly carbs etc but most of the other expensive parts have gone so i will be rebuilding on more of a budget lol when i have the funds.

So the engine....yes i am going small block but for a few good reasons, this isn't the usual small block affair, i'm going to try turbo power (as i'm working for a turbo company now it would be rude not to), my theory behind this being small block weight and handling, turbo boost, but i should be able to achieve similar power to a well tuned xe on bodies or a standard/mildly tuned let.

Plans at present are stand alone management, custom inlet and exhaust manifolds, lowered compression ratio, and a hybrid turbo. I will probably opt for an F20 box and shafts for the moment as i'm unsure if the small block boxes will cope with the output?

The hybrid turbo will consist of T2 turbine housing from an old landrover of all things as it has the AR (air ratio) im after, T25 comp cover and bearing housing probably from a nissan s14 200sx, but with a modern upgraded compressor wheel.
I have opted for this turbo option as it will be well capable of coping with the power output i'm after (200bhp plus) but should also be progressive power. It will also be more 'cost effective' if it all goes t i t s up (were as a ball bearing turbo wouldn't be as they expensive if things go wrong)

Turboing this engine properly is quite a 'gray' area as it hasn't been done to many times so this is going to be a suck it and see mission although saying that the basic rules of turboing still apply.

Your thoughts and opinions are welcome as usual and i hope to actually get on with something when i'm home next!

Thanks you :thumb:

sounds like a very interesting spec Btw 200Bhp from a Small block would be one to look out for.

It will be a cracker if it goes right  and i have no doubt that the power is possible but as you say it will need to be built for the job.

At present i'm unsure of what the bottom ends can cope with in standard guise, if any one knows please fill me in.

Thats not a bad idea!

Well my mate bought a Neil Robson's old 8v turbo engine, and when Neil use to own it he had just over 200bhp from it, Mike has got a few lest tricks, aqua mist/progress boost controller etc, and it's still putting out 192bhp form a virtually standard (as internals) turbo'd small block 1600 8v.... :thumb:

Hey James, it's good to read up on what engine choice you are going to opt for finally.
I was meaning to quiz you on what turbo charger you had in mind, considering your place of work & all. I think I want something bigger than the T2 I have now (been told it was upgraded to T25) but I don't believe it. Perhaps I need to send mine off for analysis & get the actuator fixed.

What would the cost be approximately on a turbo like you mention above & lets chat about getting a pair of exh manifolds made??

Anyhow, nice one for joining my exclusive club! :thumb:

Hi Craig surprisingly enough my plans have altered slightly turbo wise, after some more research today i have found a T25 turbine housing from a saab (with the .49 A/R) that is more suited to my application than the T2 i mentioned originally. The T25 housing is more efficient than the T2 and has a better exhaust exit point for my needs.
I will basically be following the spesification of a GT2556R ball bearing turbo - i will give full details later once i'm back in.

Hopefully i will be to post up some pics of the turbo shortly as i have a 'shell' (a complete turbo with no innards) to dry build with :d

As for your unit you are correct in thinking that the best bet would be to send it off for analisis.
A. to find out what it actually is
B. to get the actuator sorted
C. to find out the options and cost of upgrade available

I will let you know a complete price once i have actually fully built the turbo if you are interested?
I plan on having a go at constructing my own manifolds but we will see how we get on first before i get too carried away lol
